Summary Effects of increasing rates of lime and phosphorus addition on concentrations of available nutrients in soil and on P, Al and Mn uptake by two pasture legumes, lotus (Lotus pedunculatus Cav.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), were studied in a pot experiment using a highly leached acid (pH 4.2) soil.Liming resulted in an increase in exchangeable Ca and thus in percentage base saturation, with concomitant decreases in levels of exchangeable Al, Fe and Mn. The relationship between exchangeable Ca and Al was linear and negative with a gradient of almost unity. Liming had no consistent effect on measured CEC values. Increasing lime rates significantly reduced concentrations of Mg, K and Na in saturation paste extracts but had no effect on exchangeable Mg, K and Na levels. With increasing lime additions, available phosphate indicesviz water soluble, resin-, Morgan-and Williams-extractable all decreased significantly, Truog-extractable was unaffected, while Brayextractable generally increased. Fractionation revealed that lime additions caused a decrease in easily soluble, Fe-bound and to a lesser extent Ca-bound phosphate fractions, had no effect on reductant soluble phosphate, but resulted in an increase in the Al-bound fraction. P uptake and yield of both legumes increased with lime and P additions.Correlations between available phosphate indices and yield of both legumes were weak or nonsignificant. However, high, significant positive correlation coefficients were found between available phosphate and plant uptake of P. Indices of available Al and Mn were not generally significantly correlated with plant uptake of Al or Mn but significant negative correlations were found between available Al and Mn and yield of both species.  相似文献

Santonian deep- and platform-marine facies inoceramids from the Basque-Cantabrian Basin show clear saw-toothed intra-shell variations with respect to Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Na/Ca, Ba/Ca, Fe/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios. Under cathodoluminescence, the most luminescent zones in all the inoceramids present lower Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca (up to 48% and 35% lower values, respectively) and higher Fe/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios (up to 362% and 819% higher values, respectively), which is indicative of diagenetic modification. In contrast, the least luminescent zones show higher Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios and lower Fe/Ca and Mn/Ca. These findings, along with the presence of frequent, well-correlated Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Na/Ca ratios, inversely related to Fe/Ca and Mn/Ca, in the weakest luminescent zones suggest major retention of the primary intra-shell variations in these zones. Moreover, Ba/Ca profiles, not connected with the general cathodoluminescence behaviour of the shells, also point towards partial retention of the primary patterns. The saw-toothed intra-shell variations are thought to be caused by the distinct geochemical signals acquired originally by the inoceramid alternating clear and dark growth lines. The deposition of the growth lines and thus the saw-toothed intra-shell variations may be mainly related to periodically changing palaeoenvironmental conditions, such as seawater temperature variations and phytodetritus rainfall. This interpretation is supported by the appearance of highly similar chemical saw-toothed variations in the extant shallow-marine Atrina rigida shell.  相似文献

Summary Net K movements in reconstituted human red cell ghosts and the resealing of ghosts to cations after osmotic hemolysis of red cells have been studied as functions of the free Ca ion concentration. The Ca-dependent specific increase in K permeability was shown to be mediated by a site close to the internal surface of the membrane with an apparent dissociation constant at pH 7.2 for Ca (K D1) of 3–5×10–7 m, for Sr of 7×10–6 m. Ba and Mg did not increase the K-permeability of the membrane but inhibited the Ca-mediated permeability changes.K D1 decreased in a nonlinear fashion when the pH was increased from 6.0 to 8.5. Two different pK values of this membrane site were found at pH 8.3 and 6.3. The Ca-activated net K efflux into a K-free medium was almost completely inhibited by an increase in intracellular Na from 4 to 70mm. Extracellular K antagonized this Na effect. Changes in the extracellular Na (0.1–140mm) or K(0.1–6mm) concentrations had little effect and did not changeK D1. The Ca-stimulated recovery of a low cation permeability in ghost cells appeared to be mediated by a second membrane site which was accessible to divalent cations only during the process of hemolysis in media of low ionic strength. The apparent dissociation constant for Ca at this site (K D2) varied between 6×10–7 and 4×10–6 m at pH 7.2. Mg, Sr, and Ba could replace Ca functionally. The selectivity sequence was Ca>Sr>Ba>Mg.K D2 was independt on the pH value in the range between 6.0 and 8.0. Hill coefficients of 2 were observed for the interaction of Ca with both membrane sites suggesting that more than one Ca ion is bound per site. The Hill coefficients were affected neither by the ion composition nor by the pH values of the intra- and extracellular media. It is concluded that two different pathways for the permeation of cations across the membrane are controlled by membrane sites with high affinities for Ca: One specific for K, one unspecific with respect to cations. The K-specific channel has properties similar to the K channel in excitable tissues.  相似文献

Summary Studies of plant standing crop and nutrient concentrations have enabled an assessment of the seasonal changes in nutrient standing stocks (the mass of nutrients per m2) in a fjaeldmark and two fernbrake communities on Marion Island (46°54S, 37°45E). These communities are an important component of the island's vegetation on rocky plateaux and slopes. For most species the aboveground accumulations of N, P and K early in the season were more rapid than increases in the aerial biomass. Rates of Ca, Mg or Na accrual were either similar to, or lower than, rates of aboveground growth. Nutrient (N+P+K+Ca+Mg+Na) standing stocks at the three communities were high; 71 g m-2 at fjaeldmark, 116 g m-2 at open fernbrake and 154 g m-2 at closed fernbrake. The aboveground component accounted for 47% to 65% of these values. N was the most abundant element in the vegetation, followed by K (closed fernbrake) or Ca (open fernbrake and fjaeldmark). Nutrient standing stocks at the two fernbrakes were mostly higher than for most sub-Arctic and alpine dwarf-shrub tundras. Nutrient pool sizes (i.e. the total quantities of nutrients contained in the soil/plant system to a depth of 25 cm) were lower than those reported for arctic tundra meadows but were similar to, and often greater than, those found at heath communities, sub-Arctic dry meadows and dwarf-shrub tundras and some boreal forests. Annual net primary productions of the fernbrake vegetations were high and substantial quantities of nutrients are aquired annually from the soils by the vegetations. Depending on plant species, either N or K was the element taken up in the largest quantity, whereas P was mostly taken up in the lowest amount. A large proportion (mostly all) of the Ca and Mg and a substantial proportion of the N taken up aboveground was lost in the litterfall but little of K taken up was lost in this way.  相似文献

Summary Studies of plant standing crop and nutrient concentrations have enabled an assessment of the seasonal changes in nutrient standing stocks (the mass of nutrients per m2) in two mire-grasslands at Marion Island (46°54S, 37°45E). Mire-grasslands are an important component of the island's vegetation, occurring on very wet peats and dominated by graminoids and bryophytes. Peak aboveground standing stocks of N, P and K in the vascular plant species of the mire-grasslands mostly occurred earlier in the season than did peak aboveground biomass, implying that aboveground accumulation rates of these nutrients were greater than the rate of biomass accumulation. Maximum Ca standing stocks coincided in the season with peak shoot biomass. Depending on the plant species, peak Mg and Na standing stocks occurred either before, or later than, peak shoot biomass. Total (above-plus belowground) standing stocks of nutrients (N+P+K+Ca+Mg+Na) at the time of peak aboveground biomass were 51 g m-2 at study mire 1 and 44 g m-2 at study mire 2. The most abundant element in the vegetation was N, followed by K. The net quantities of most nutrients translocated into the aboveground growth were mostly greater than the seasonal mean standing stocks in the aerial biomass. Except for Ca, nutrient standing stocks in the vegetation of the mire-grasslands are in the upper part of the range reported for sub-Arctic and Arctic graminoid communities. They are more similar to standing stocks at oceanic moorlands, montane grasslands and heath communities. Low Ca concentrations occur in the plants so that Ca standing stocks are lower than in most comparable northern hemisphere communities. Pool sizes (i.e. total quantities contained in the plant/soil system to a depth of 25 cm) of N, P, K and Ca are in the lower part of the range reported for wet, graminoid-dominated tundra and tundra-like communities of the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

The effects of the seaweed concentrate Kelpak on the growth and mineral nutrition of lettuce plants grown under conditions of varying nutrient supply were investigated. Kelpak significantly increased the yield and the concentration and amounts of Ca, K and Mg in the leaves of lettuce receiving an adequate supply of nutrients, but had little effect on nutrient stressed plants. Results are discussed in relation to the physiological mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the beneficial effects of seaweed concentrate on plants.author for correspondence  相似文献

Summary In a solution culture study the absorption of Ca in the shoot of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and various root parameters viz fresh weight, dry weight, length and surface area were measured at weekly intervals. All the root parameters were significantly correlated (p=0.01) with the amount of Ca absorbed when the concentration of Ca was such (5 meq/l) that the absorption capacity of the root membrane was fully saturated. The use of this relationship has been suggested in estimating the amount of roots developed in the soil system where identical conditions exist with respect to Ca concentration. Such estimated values have been termed as equivalent root length or equivalent root surface area as the case may be. P and K flux into the roots growing in the soil system have been worked out from these estimates of root parameters.  相似文献

Summary The effects were studied of varying amounts and forms of N fertilizers on the chemical composition of soil solution and on the uptake of N, K, Na, Ca and Mg by barley. In isolated soil solution the concentrations as well as the ratios of individual cations depended on form and amount of added nitrogen. The concentration of cations increased proportionally with applications of nitrate+sulphate. Cation-activity ratios in isolated soil solution were governed by the ratios of corresponding exchangeable cations. During the entire growth period the absorption by the plants of individual as well as of cations was independent of their concentrations in soil solution. So long as NH4 ions were present in the soil solution, plants with NH4 addition contained less cations than those with NO3 addition. Thereafter the amounts of cations in the plant were closely correlated with N absorption, but not affected by form of applied N. The ratios K/(Ca+Mg) and Ca/Mg in the plant were closely correlated with corresponding activity ratios but independent of concentration ratios of these ions in isolated soil solution. It is postulated that uptake of cations is governed by N-metabolic processes in the plant, whereas ratios of absorbed cations are influenced by cation-activity ratios in the soil solution.  相似文献

Acidification of south Swedish forest soils has caused considerable decreases in pH and exchangeable cations during recent decades. The lowered abundance of several field-layer species is probably related to the altered soil chemistry. The present study focuses on the importance for the vegetation of reduced amounts of Ca, Mg and K. These elements were applied separately or mixed as C1+SO4, six times the current exchangeable amount of the topsoil of an acid beech forest soil (pH H2O 4.1). Soil pH was raised to 7 by Na2CO3 application and Na was also given as C1+SO4. Survival and growth of the seven transplanted species were measured during three years (Dentaria bulbifera, Gagea spathacea, Galium odoratum, Lamium galeobdolon, Melica uniflora, Mercurialis perennis and Viola reichenbachiana.Half a year after the treatment the exchangeable amounts of K, Ca and Mg had increased by ca. 2.5 times when applied separately. Howerver, the retention of Mg was strongly disfavoured by the application of all other elements. Exchangeable K and Na thereafter decreased while the effects on Ca and Mg were persistent during the study. D. bulbifera, G. odoratum and M. perennis hardly survived any treatment, possibly due to the low soil pH, while 40–70% of the other species survived. Growth to normal size was only attained by G. spathacea, M. uniflora and V. reichenbachiana. The application of Ca+Mg+K was positive for G. spathacea, L. galeobdolon and M. perennis and Na (as C1+SO4) for D. bulbifera, L. galeobdolon, M. uniflora and M. perennis. The effects of the Na treatment may partly be caused by the increased pH (5.3). Application of Mg favoured M. uniflora and Na2CO3 V. reichenbachiana. Addition of K gave no positive effects. It can be concluded that addition of Ca, Mg and K without raising pH was insufficient for a normal growth for all studied species but M. uniflora and V. reichenbachiana. These two species also had a relatively high survival in the control plots but performance was enhanced by Mg or Na2CO3 application.  相似文献

EF-1a binds aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosome with the hydrolysis of GTP; the complex facilitates the exchange of GDP for GTP to initiate another round of elongation. To examine the subunit structure of EF-1 and phosphorylation by protein kinase CKII, recombinant , , and subunits from rabbit were expressed in E. coli and the subunits were reconstituted into partial and complete complexes and analyzed by gel filtration. To determine the availability of the and subunits for phosphorylation by CKII, the subunits and the reconstituted complexes were examined as substrates for CKII. Formation of the nucleotide exchange complex increased the rate of phosphorylation of the subunit and reduced the Km, while addition of to or the complex inhibited phosphorylation by CKII. However, a had little effect on phosphorylation of . Thus, the and subunits in EF-1 were differentially phosphorylated by CKII, in that phosphorylation of was altered by association with other subunits, while the site on was always available for phosphorylation by CKII. From the availability of the subunits for phosphorylation by CKII and the composition of the reconstituted partial and complete complexes, a model for the subunit structure of EF-1 consisting of (22)2 is proposed and discussed.  相似文献

Nutrient content of the moist tropical forest of Ghana   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Summary The total weight of vegetation on an area of just over 1 acre of old secondary forest in the moist forest zone of Ghana has been determined, and found to be equivalent to roughly 150 tons per acre dry weight. The nutrient content of each component of the vegetation was also determined and showed that the amounts of the major nutrients immobilised in the vegetation were: N, 1,800 lb./acre; P, 120 lb./acre; K, 800 1b./acre; Ca, 2,400 lb./acre; Mg, 350 lb./acre. The corresponding amounts of nutrients in the top foot of soil supporting the vegetation were: total N, 4,100 lb./acre; available P, 11 lb./acre; exchangeable K, 580 lb./acre; exchangeable Ca, 2,300 lb./acre; exchangeable Mg, 330 lb./acre. About half the nutrients stored in the vegetation were contained in readily combustible material, and except for N would be released to the soil if the forest were cleared and burnt for cultivation. The quantity of roots and the amounts of nutrients contained in them were not sufficiently great to make an important addítion to the nutrient supply in the soil during subsequent cultivation. Of the total quantity of roots supporting the vegetation 85.5 per cent by weight were within 1 foot of the soil surface.  相似文献

Periodic flooding of perennial crops such as lucerne (Medicago sativa,L) is a major cause of lowered productivity and leads in extreme cases to plant death. In this study, effects of waterlogging and subsequent recovery on plant nutrient composition and PSII photochemistry were studied to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of recovery as they relate to leaf photochemistry (chlorophyll fluorescence) and nutrient dynamics. Three lucerne cultivars and one breeding line were flooded for 20 d, drained and left to recover for another 16 d under glasshouse conditions. Leaf and root nutrient composition (P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Cu and Zn) of waterlogged lucerne was significantly lower than in freely drained controls, leaf N concentrations were also significantly lower in waterlogged lucerne. At the same time, there were significantly (5-fold) higher concentrations of Fe in waterlogged roots and Na in leaves (2-fold) of stressed plants. PS II photochemistry, which was impaired due to waterlogging, recovered almost fully after 16 d of free drainage in all genotypes. Alongside fluorescence recovery, concentrations of several nutrients also increased in recovered plants. Growth parameters, however, remained suppressed after draining. The latter was due to both the smaller capacity of CO2 assimilation in previously waterlogged plants (caused in part by nutrient deficiency and associated inhibition of PSII) and the plants need to re-direct available nutrient and assimilate pools to repair the damage to the photosynthetic apparatus and roots. It is concluded, that for any lucerne-breeding program it is important to determine not only the degree of tolerance to waterlogging but also the potential for recovery of different genotypes, as well as look for outstanding individuals within each population.  相似文献

Summary Aluminum toxicity is an important growth limiting factor for upland rice production on oxisols of cerrado region in Brazil. Data related to the effect of Al on uptake of nutrients for rice crop are limited. The effect of five Al concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 ppm) in culture solution on the chemical composition of 30 upland rice cultivars was studied.Aluminum concentration and content in plant tissues were increased with higher levels of Al in all cultivar. In the roots Al content was higher as compared with the tops. Critical toxic level of Al in the tops of 21 days old plants varied from 100 to 417 ppm depending on the cultivars. Rice cultivars responded differently to Al treatments with respect to nutrients uptake. Increased Al concentrations in the solution exerted an inhibiting effect on the concentrations and contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Na, Zn, Fe, Mn, B and Cu. Thus the inhibition was more effective for macronutrients in the plant tops in following order: Mg>Ca>P>K>N>S>Na. Whereas for micronutrients it was in the order of Mn>Zn>Fe>Cu>B. Morphological, physiological and biochemical effects of Al, toxicity responsible for the reduction in plant nutrient uptake, are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Water potential () measurements of Atriplex canescens at the base of the Red Desert near Tipton in Wyoming, revealed a range between-15.5 to-45.1 bars. Minimum values coincided with the lowest air and soil temperatures, maximum with the greatest atmospheric evaporative demand. Change in exceeded 12 bars h-1 during periods of rapidly moving storm systems. Changes in appeared to be independent of plant size, age, sex, and the spatial location of plants. Chemical analyses revealed that xylem sap was up to three times more concentrated at high than at low . It was observed that the flow rate of sap was greater at lower than at higher and that the increase in water movement accounted for the dilution of the baseline concentration of sap solutes. Together, Ca, Mg, K and Na contributed 58% of the mean osmolality of the xylem sap; the dominant ions, however, were K and Cl. We suggest that the ability of the species to respond rapidly to changing atmospheric conditions affords it a distinct advantage in a harsh environment.  相似文献

Simulium craigi Adler and Currie is a polymorphic species based on polytene chromosome banding patterns in the long arm of chromosome III (IIIL). Three cytotypes are described based on the predominant IIIL sequences. These correspond to three broad geographic areas: cytotype CC from Pennsylvania; cytotype AF from Ontario and Manitoba; and cytotype ACF/BCF from New Hampshire. In the absence of sympatric populations, these cytotype differences are best explained by clinal variation within a single species. The relationship of S. craigi to other described members of the S. vernum group is discussed.  相似文献

Allophycocyanins were purified from diverse cyanobacteria and one rhodophytan alga (Cyanidium caldarium). The native proteins are trimeric molecules with the structure ()3. Representative native allophycocyanins and their and subunits were characterized with respect to molecular weight, amino acid composition, isoelectric point, absorption and fluorescence spectra and immunological properties. All of the allophycocyanins studied were strikingly similar with respect to each of these properties.Renatured and subunits of allophycocyanin were distinct immunologically from each other, and both cross-reacted with the antiserum to the native protein.Trimeric allophycocyanin was readily reconstituted from the purified and subunits. Formation of hybrid allophycocyanins was demonstrated by direct isolation and characterization of the hybrid proteins and by immunological techniques. The results support the view that allophycocyanins are a highly conserved group of proteins.Abbreviation Used SDS sodium dodecyl sulfate  相似文献

Growth and contents of sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), chloride (Cl), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) in shoot and root tissues of Carthamus tinctorius plants were measured at combinations of four nutrient solution osmotic potentials (s=0, -0.3, -0.6 and -0.9 MPa) induced by NaCl and CaCl treatments, three constant temperatures (T) ranging from 15 to 35°C and four abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations (0,10,50 and 100 mg L–1). Unstressed and stressed plants grown in optimal temperature conditions (25°C) maintained higher growth rates (dry mass production) than plants grown under low and high temperatures (15 and 35°C respectively). Shoot and root growth (dry mass production) were largely inhibited by salinity but the magnitude of growth inhibition was temperature dependent. Safflower plants respond to salinity stress by increases in Ca, Cl and to a lesser extent Na in their shoots and roots and by a decrease in the ratio of fresh to dry weight. The ratio of K/Na was decreased progressively on salinization. With stressed plants, ABA application reduced the toxicity of salt treatment, improved K uptake under salinity, effectively increased K/Na ratio and helped the plants to avoid Na toxicity and sometimes enhanced growth. The effect of ABA on the growth was more pronounced at optimum temperature (25°C). The association between the internal mineral element concentrations was largely affected by ABA application and temperature change but a wide fluctuation in response was noticed. The effects of single factors (s, T and ABA) on the growth and mineral contents were statistically significant. Also, bifactorial (s× T, s × ABA and T × ABA) and three factorial (s × T × ABA) interactions significantly affected the parameters. Further statistical treatment of the data (coefficient of determination 2) led to four important findings: (1) Salinity (s) was dominant in affecting Ca and Cl contents in both shoot and root as well as root Na content. (2) Temperature (T) had a dominant effect on growth, shoot K, Mg, P, S and root P, and S contents (3) The share of s × T × ABA interaction was dominant for root Na and Mg contents. (4) The single factors and their interactions had a dual role in their subsidiary effects.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - s osmotic potential - 2 coefficient of determination - F.wt fresh weight - d.m. dry matter - T temperature - MPa mega pascal - SAR sodium adsorption ratio - P phosphorus - S sulphur  相似文献

The cationic responses of haemolymph, mantle collar, headfoot, gut + digestive diverticulum and ovotestis + albumin gland of three planorbids to cationic changes in the media are explored. Body organs exhibited cationic homeostasis, although attained with difficulty under very low Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios. Haemolymph imbalances were obtained at very low calcium concentrations and at very low Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios in the medium; this may be linked to competition for Ca2+ uptake sites in the epithelium by Mg2+ and possibly Na+ ions.Fecundity and shell growth in relation to calcium concentrations and to Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios are examined.Normal internal cationic levels, under optimal conditions, were obtained for each species. Significant interspecific differences for haemolymph sodium were found; magnesium levels were slightly higher in Biomphalaria spp. than in Helisoma trivolvis; potassium levels were all similar. Amounts of tissue calcium decreased as follows: Mantle collar head-foot ovotestis + albumin gland-gut + diverticulum. Tissue magnesium levels in the gut were low. H. trivolvis had highest tissue calcium and sodium; B. glabrata had highest tissue potassium.  相似文献

The leaf macroelement profile of fruiting shoots of persimmon was characterized by a modified diagnostic and recommendation integrated system (DRIS), using SLW as a primary determinant of leaf mineral content. Leaf N, P, Ca, and Mg content was positively and linearly correlated with SLW when expressed on leaf area basis (g mm–2). Potassium had a negative and higher correlation to SLW when expressed on %DW basis. Mineral ratios relevant for the DRIS analysis were calculated using all four possible combinations of Area (A) and Weight (W) expressions (A/A, A/W, W/A and W/W) and correlated with leaf SLW. The particular expressions chosen for the DRIS analysis were based on their highest correlation to SLW and included N/K, P/K and Ca/Mg, based on the A/W expression of the respective nutrients and the reciprocal expression (W/A) for all other ratios. Derivation of DRIS norms were based on the mineral profile of highly exposed shoots (SLW of 15.0±0.3 mg cm–2). Calculated indices of gradually less exposed shoots (SLW of 3.8–18.9 mg cm–2) revealed a strong exponential imbalance of N, K and P (increasingly positive) vs Ca and Mg (increasingly negative). The calculated Nutritional Imbalance Index (NII) value of leaves decreased exponentially as shoot leaf SLW decreased. The modified DRIS analysis detected successfully a distinct mineral profile of highly vigorous fruiting water shoots, as compared to regular fruiting shoots of comparable SLW.  相似文献
