The host alternating aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeds in summer on several different species of grasses but is monophagous on its winter host, Prunus padus L. The monophagy on P. padus could be a result of the restricted host range of the several different generations colonizing, or feeding, on this host during autumn–winter–spring. This study shows that the winter host plant specificity of R. padi is controlled mainly by the preference of the females remigrating (gynoparae) to the winter host, P. padus, in autumn. The other generations living on the winter host, i.e., sexual females, males, and spring generations, all accept a broader range of winter hosts. One alternative host plant, Prunus spinosa L., could be utilized by all generations associated with the winter host, except for the females remigrating at autumn.  相似文献

Aphid size, although generally a good indicator of fecundity is not a good indicator of aphid performance over a wide range of conditions. In general, the greater the mean relative growth rate (MRGR) of apterous morphs of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), the greater their fecundity. Intrinsic rate of increase (rm) is even more closely correlated with mean relative growth rate than fecundity.Once these criteria are quantified for a morph of a particular species of aphid over a range of conditions the morphs intrinsic rate of increase on a particular host can be estimated by a quick measure of its mean relative growth rate.

Exudate from glandular trichomes of the wild potato species, Solanum berthaultii Hawkes, and the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum L., contained volatile substances including sesquiterpenes when examined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedures. Sesquiterpenes were the major volatile constituents of Type A trichome exudate but were a minor constituent of Type B exudate. Sesquiterpene mixtures of the two potato species differed qualitatively and quantitatively. -Caryophyllene and E--Farnesene were major components identified in Type A trichome exudate of the cultivated potato. Sesquiterpene mixtures of both potato species were repellent to the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The role of trichome sesquiterpenes as a determinant of aphid behavior on the two potato species and in the expression of host resistance is discussed.
Résumé L'examen en chromatographie gazeuse et en spectométrie de masse a révélé la présence de substances volatiles contenant des sesquiterpènes dans l'exsudat des trichômes glandulaires des pommes de terre sauvage (Solanum berthaultii) et cultivée (S. tuberosum). Les sesquiterpènes étaient le principal composé volatile de l'exsudat de type A, tandis qu'ils n'étaient que faiblement représentés dans l'exsudat de type B. Les mélanges de sesquiterpènes des deux espèces différaient qualitativement et quantitativement. Le -Caryophyllène et le E--Farnesène constituaient les principaux composés identifiés dans l'exsudat de trichôme de type A de S. tuberosum. Les mélanges sesquiterpéniques des deux espèces ont repousée Myzus persicae Sulzer. La discussion a porté sur l'influence des sesquiterpènes des trichômes dans la définition du comportement des pucerons sur ces deux plantes et sur la manifestation de la résistance de l'hôte.

Feeding deterrent activities of ellagic acid, two ellagitannins, gallic acid, pyrogallol, and several gallic acid derivatives towards three species of aphids were determined. The most sensitive species tested was Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), the least sensitive was Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was of intermediate sensitivity. Ellagic acid (ED50=15 ppm) and n-decyl gallate (ED50=16 ppm) were particularly potent against S. graminum, while n-octyl gallate was the most active compound tested against A. pisum (ED50=182 ppm) and M. persicae (ED50=56 ppm). The ellagitannins, geraniin and pedunculagin, were active against S. graminum and M. persicae, but not against A. pisum. Methylation of the free hydroxyl groups of gallic acid resulted in a large decrease in activity, while esterification of its carboxyl group with alkyl chains of increasing length resulted in increasing activity against S. graminum. Against A. pisum and M. persicae, ellagic acid, gallic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid were inactive, whereas pyrogallol and the gallate esters were at least moderately active as feeding deterrents.
Résumé L'examen a porté sur l'action répulsive, lors de l'alimentation de trois espèces de pucerons, de l'acide ellgique, de deux ellagitanins, de l'acide gallique, du pyrogallol et de plusieurs dérivés de l'acide gallique. Schizaphis graminum Rondani a été l'espèce la plus sensible, tandis que Acyrthosiphon pisum. Harris a été la moins sensible; la sensibilité de Myzus persicae Sulzer était intermédiaire. Foraging theory indicates that aphid predators should lay their eggs early in the development of an aphid colony. Hoverflies appear to respond to cues associated with the age of an aphid colony in assessing its quality for oviposition. However, in the study reported here, ovipositing two-spot ladybirds did not respond differentially to two cues, in various combinations, associated with the age of aphid colonies on herbaceous plants: (a) age structure of the aphid colony and (b) the age of the plant. Thus, this aphid predator appears to be mainly using cues associated with the presence of conspecific larvae rather than those associated with aphids and/or plants when assessing patch quality.  相似文献

Within the Aphidoidea, most species of Aphididae, as long as they are in small numbers and not carrying plant viruses, do little perceptible damage to their food plants. In species that cause toxicoses, it is usually assumed that some component of the saliva must be responsible. Paradoxically, however, the salivary enzymes of Aphididae are similar to those that already occur in plants – oxidases and enzymes that depolymerize polysaccharides – and the salivary enzymes are injected in very small amounts relative to their counterparts in the plant. Damage to plants triggers defensive, biochemical responses, and it is suggested that the injected enzymes serve mainly to divert or counter responses at the immediate interface of stylets and plant tissues. The saliva of Aphididae contains non-enzymic, reducing compounds which, in the presence of oxidases, can combine with and inactivate defensive phytochemicals – including those released in response to damage and transported in the phloem sieve tube sap on which Aphididae feed. Salivary and gut oxidases deactivate ingested phytochemicals by oxidative polymerization. Aphididae inject saliva into sieve tubes before sustained ingestion of sap, and this saliva has been presumed to condition the sieve tubes, but in what way remains unclear. It is suggested that there is a dynamic biochemical interaction between aphids and plants; that the interaction is usually well balanced for most of the Aphididae; hence, no outcome is readily observable. Where a significant imbalance occurs, however, either the aphid is unable to feed, i.e. the plant is resistant, and/or the aphid does not effectively counter a hypersensitive response. Not all plant responses are disadvantageous to aphids. Gall-forming Aphidoidea trigger and control abnormal growth in the plant to the insects' advantage, possibly by eliciting vigorous oxidation in selective meristematic tissues, thereby limiting supply of molecular oxygen and inhibiting oxygen-dependent growth-controls. Current problems and possible approaches for further research are reviewed.  相似文献

Variation in Escape Behavior of Red and Green Clones of the Pea Aphid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Many insect species have evolved a number of antipredator tactics among which the animal can choose when attacked by a natural enemy. While it is known that individuals may differ in how the antipredator tactics are employed, quantitative studies are rare. In the pea aphid, it has been suggested that different clones differ in their propensity to escape from a predator and that this propensity is linked to the body color of the aphid. We tested clonal variation in the escape behavior in red and green clones of the pea aphid. In three experiments the responses of clones to artificial stimuli and a natural predator were quantified. The results indicate that (1) clones differ considerably in their propensity to show escape behavior, (2) red clones are more likely to drop off the host plant when subjected to an artificial stimulus than green clones are, and (3) the patterns of clonal variation in the escape behavior were not consistent through all three experiments, as clones did not differ in their behavior when attacked by a real predator. The differences in the responses of a clone toward different stimuli supposed to mimic predator attack suggest that extrapolating from laboratory experiments to a field situation may be difficult.  相似文献

The genus Pemphigus comprises several species that produce soldiers (defensive morphs) in galls on the primary host. At the moment, it is unclear if host-alternating species also produce defenders on their secondary host. We therefore examined how P. bursarius morphs of the secondary host generations respond to predators to test whether they show defensive behavior. We further examined how this response compares with the antipredator behavior of soldiers in P. bursarius and P. spyrothecae occurring on the primary host. We performed two manipulative experiments using two predatory species to quantify the behavior of the different morphs in response to predators. In both experiments, secondary host morphs of P. bursarius showed no attacking behavior and antipredator behavior in these morphs was limited to escaping natural enemies by walking away. In contrast, the first instars of the primary host generations in both Pemphigus species showed attacking behavior and were capable of killing the predators.  相似文献

The genus Nanovirus consists of plant viruses that predominantly infect legumes leading to devastating crop losses. Nanoviruses are transmitted by various aphid species. The transmission occurs in a circulative nonpropagative manner. It was long suspected that a virus-encoded helper factor would be needed for successful transmission by aphids. Recently, a helper factor was identified as the nanovirus-encoded nuclear shuttle protein (NSP). The mode of action of NSP is currently unknown in contrast to helper factors from other plant viruses that, for example, facilitate binding of virus particles to receptors within the aphids' stylets. The aphidBrachycaudus rumexicolensis a recent arrival in Australia where the weedsEmex australis, E. spinosa,andRumexspecies are its recorded hosts. Host range on 114 species representing 42 plant families was assessed in the laboratory to determine the aphid species' potential as a biological control agent againstE. australis.Survival and reproductive success were measured in clip and/or dialysis-tube cages.B. rumexicolensdeveloped most successfully onEmexspp. andRumexspp. and to a lesser extent on other Polygonaceae.Lupinus albus(white lupin) andTriticum aestivum(wheat) were the only non-Polygonaceae plants on whichB. rumexicolensdeveloped to a degree similar to its usual hosts. At a field site in Western Australia,E. australisandPolygonum avicularewere the only Polygonaceae present and the primary host species ofB. rumexicolens.At peak abundance, it was found on other pasture and crop species, but at considerably lower numbers than on its Polygonaceae hosts. It was concluded that this was due to local migration and that populations would not be sustained on non-Polygonaceae plants. A variety of host-related substances was assessed in relation to their ability to induce arrestment and antennal examination behavior in adult females of the aphid hyperparasitoid Alloxysta victrix (Westwood). In laboratory bioassays, whole-body homogenates of both unparasitized host aphids [Myzus persicae (Sulzer)] and those parasitized by the primary parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck failed to elicit a response. However, significant kairomonal activity was associated with aphid cornicle secretions, aphid honeydew, and solvent extracts of parasitized aphids. Solvent extracts of unparasitized aphids (in either hexane or butan-1-ol) failed to elicit arrestment or antennal examination behavior in hyperparsitoid females. The response to aphid honeydew was significantly lower in experienced females than in naive individuals, suggesting that even relatively strong innate responses can be modified by learning.  相似文献

In 1970-1, Metopolophium dirhodum, Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae were the commonest alatae trapped from April/May to August, with most in July and early August. The first alatae appeared in the Rothamsted survey suction trap 0–34 days before aphids were found on the cereals, but during May and June no relationship was found between the numbers trapped and the number on the crop. Most species occurred first near the sheltered edge of the crop, but M. dirhodum was widespread over the field. Most infestations were quickly dispersed by the movements of older morphs; adults only stayed in one place for about 2 days. Alate M. dirhodum moved more often than apterae, but both morphs of S. avenae moved equally often and more frequently between larvipositions than did those of M. dirhodum. Apterae deposited more nymphs in a ‘group’ than alatae, and M. dirhodum deposited more than S. avenae. Few ‘groups’ persisted for more than a week. Although M. dirhodum occupied the crop area faster than S. avenae, all 0–3 m lengths of row sampled being infested within 2–5 wk of their first appearance, most or all of the tillers were colonized only in late July 1970.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship between age and learning ability of femaleAscogaster reticulatusWatanabe, an egg-larval parasitoid of the smaller tea tortrixAdoxophyessp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Females 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 days old had higher fecundity than 0-day-old females and could associate tea leaf extract with the host egg mass through oviposition. Experienced females 1 ≈ 13 days old walked more than 10 cm along an extract-treated line while exhibiting the antennating response. However, the learned responses of 0-day-old females was significantly lower [mean = 1.4 ± 0.8 (S. E.) cm] than that of older females (1 ≈ 13 days). In considering the relation between fecundity and the learned response, a low response in 0-day-old females could be due to a low propensity by them to learn cues associated with host eggs. Average longevity was 12.0 ± 1.5 days, but even 13-day-old females could oviposit a large number of eggs and learn to associate the tea leaf extract with host presence. This suggests that females can learn as long as they are able to oviposit. This learning ability would be advantageous forA. reticulatusfemales throughout their lives.  相似文献

The effects of the hta gene encoding Helianthus tuberosus agglutinin (HTA) on an insect in the order Homoptera were investigated. Homologous cDNAs of hta-a, hta-b, hta-c and hta-d with CaMV35S as promoter were introduced into tobacco via Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Southern blot results showed that the exogenous hta gene was inserted into the genome of host plants, and northern blot analysis confirmed that hta was expressed in transgenic plants. A bioassay with peach-potato aphid (Myzus persicae) demonstrated that transgenic plants had deleterious effects on the insect. The average population of aphids fed on transgenic T0 plants during an 11-day assay decreased by 70%, compared controls. In transgenic plants of T1 generation, aphid fecundity inhibitions were 53.0%(hta-b) and 64.6% (hta-c), respectively. The development of aphids was notably retarded. We conclude that hta could be a novel and promising candidate for plant transgenic engineering against homopteran insect pests.  相似文献

Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) is an introduced natural enemy of the alfalfa weevil in North America. The wasp requires carbohydrate foods as an adult. Adult wasps have increased longevity and fecundity when provided access to pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), honeydew in the laboratory, and adults respond positively to the presence of pea aphids in alfalfa fields. However, it is unknown how these wasps find aphid honeydew in the field. In a series of Y-tube olfactometer experiments, we evaluated the response of naïve and experienced adult female B. curculionis to odors from pea aphids, alfalfa, and pea aphids on alfalfa. Naïve adult females did not respond positively to pea aphid odor even when hungry. But adult females were able to learn aphid odor, and the mechanism of learning appears to be associative rather than by sensitization. Naïve females also showed no preference for alfalfa odor but learned alfalfa odor through sensitization. The wasps did not distinguish between alfalfa with aphids and alfalfa without aphids, even after exposure to aphids or alfalfa with aphids. However, they preferred pea aphid odor to alfalfa odor after a feeding experience in the presence of pea aphid odors. But after exposure to mixed odors of aphids and alfalfa while feeding, B. curculionis females preferred the odor of alfalfa to the odor of pea aphids. These results suggest that alfalfa odors mask or override aphid odors when aphids are associated with alfalfa (as happens naturally), thus interfering with the wasp's ability to respond to learned aphid odors. Therefore, although the wasps are capable of learning to find pea aphids and their honeydew in a simplified laboratory setting, it appears unlikely that they do so in the field.  相似文献

The potential of adult and larval C. septempunctata to vector the aphid-specific entomopathogenic fungus E. neoaphidis was assessed through a series of laboratory and field experiments. The ability of coccinellids to vector conidia from a colony of E. neoaphidis -infected pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum, to a colony of uninfected A. pisum was demonstrated in a laboratory study. Adult coccinellids which had previously foraged on plants infested with different densities of sporulating cadavers (1, 5, 15, 30 cadavers per plant) initiated infection in a proportion of uninfected pea aphids (4, 0, 2 and 8%, respectively) when subsequently allowed to forage on A. pisum infested bean plants. Further laboratory studies demonstrated that fourth instar larvae and adult coccinellids artificially inoculated with conidia initiated infection in 11 and 13% of an A. pisum population in which they foraged, respectively. Furthermore, a proportion of A. pisum placed on bean plants which had previously been foraged on by inoculated larval and adult coccinellids also died from infection (3 and 10% of A. pisum, respectively). However, although coccinellid adults inoculated with conidia initiated infection in 19% of A. pisum, cereal aphids, S. avenae , exposed to the inoculated coccinellids did not become infected. A further laboratory study demonstrated that infection of A. pisum only occurred if inoculated coccinellids were transferred to A. pisum populations immediately post inoculation. However, a proportion of A. pisum placed on bean plants which had been foraged on by inoculated coccinellids transferred 0, 4 and 24 h post inoculation died from infection (9, 3 and 7%, respectively). A field study further demonstrated the potential of coccinellids to vector E. neoaphidis. Single spring sown field bean plants (Long Hoos Experimental Plots, IACRRothamsted Farm) were enclosed within nylon mesh bags and 25 adult A. pisum were added to each bag with one of the following treatments: no further addition (control), coccinellid adult (control), inoculated coccinellid adult, inoculated A. pisum or sporulating A. pisum cadavers. No aphids died of E. neoaphidis in the control treatments; 5, 16 and 33% of aphids were infected with E. neoaphidis on the other treatments, respectively.  相似文献
