Although muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, fisheries in northern US states and Canadian provinces are increasingly being managed by introduction of restrictive harvest regulations (e.g. 1370-mm (54′′) minimum length limits), many southern US muskellunge fisheries continue to be managed with comparatively liberal regulations (e.g. 762-mm (30′′) minimum length limits) that are implemented statewide. We studied the population dynamics of the New River, Virginia, muskellunge fishery and used predictive modeling to determine whether restrictive harvest regulations also might prove beneficial for this southern latitude fishery. A creel survey was also conducted to learn more about angler attitudes to the New River muskellunge fishery. Muskellunge grew quickly, with fish reaching harvestable lengths (762 mm, 30′′) in 2–3 years. Muskellunge fishing pressure, harvest rates, and voluntary release rates were low compared with reports for more northern areas. Most anglers, irrespective of how often they fished for muskellunge, defined “trophy” muskellunge to be approximately 1050–1100 mm (41–43′′) in length. Although angler support for restrictive harvest regulations was low, abundance of memorable-length (≥1070 mm, 42′′) muskellunge was predicted to increase under all evaluated length limits. Muskellunge yield would remain static at 914-mm (36′′) and 1016-mm (40′′) length limits, because of the rapid growth of fish, but yield would decline dramatically with a 1143-mm (45′′) length limit, because male muskellunge rarely exceeded 1100 mm (43′′). Because of rapid growth and low release rates, implementation of higher length limits (e.g. 965–1067 mm, 38–42′′) may indeed prove beneficial for augmenting “trophy” muskellunge production on the New River. Angler support for higher minimum length limits might be increased by educating anglers about the rapid growth rates of muskellunge and the expected size structure changes that will result from a length-limit increase. Size structure changes resulting from an increase in the minimum length limit may be difficult to detect because of potential increases in fishing pressure or reduced fish growth as a result of competition for food resources. Long-term monitoring of muskellunge growth and angling pressure may therefore be needed to ensure that new regulations are indeed benefitting the fishery.  相似文献

Zoogeography of Vietnamese primates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Based on geographic complementarity of congeneric taxa, the 22 species or well-defined subspecies of primates that inhabit Vietnam may be allocated to nine zoogeographic groups (lorises, two; macaques, three; langurs, three; gibbons, one). Analysis of group distributions reveals two major patterns: (1) four of the six non-macaque groups are essentially restricted to the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula, east of the Mekong River; and (2) species and subspecies in seven of the nine groups reach their northern or southern limits of distribution in central Vietnam, at 14–17‡N. The first pattern suggests that the Mekong River has been an important barrier to westward dispersal of nonmacaque primates in continental Southeast Asia. The second pattern suggests that a Zoogeographic barrier formerly extended east and west across Vietnam at ca. 14–17‡N.  相似文献

The distribution of the nine banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), the only species in the family Dasypodidae found in the USA, has expanded greatly since the species was first recorded in southern Texas in 1849. Currently, the range of D. novemcinctus includes 15 states in the USA. Previous studies on the geographical expansion of this species, based on physiological experiments and distribution surveys, revealed a possible western moisture limit, a northern temperature limit, and potential north‐eastward range expansion in the USA. We applied an ecological niche modelling approach and produced a potential distribution map of D. novemcinctus with comparable western (102 °W) and northern (40 °N) limits, and confirmed the possibility of further north‐east range expansion to climatically suitable areas in the USA.  相似文献

Intertidal organisms are often assumed to live close to their thermal limits, and have emerged as potential early indicators of the effects of climate change. We compared our survey of the 2004–2006 geographic distribution of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides to its distribution in 1872, 1955, 1963, 1971, and 1985, from surveys by Fischer, Crisp, Fischer-Piette, Barnes, Powell, and Southward. The southern geographic limit has retreated 300 km in France since 1872, at a rate of 15 to 50 km per decade. We compared our 2006 survey of the geographic distribution of the polychaete Diopatra neapolitana to its distribution in 1893–1923, from surveys by Saint-Joseph and Fauvel, and its distribution in 1969–1976 from surveys by Glémarec. The northern geographic limit of this species has advanced 300 km in France since 1893 at similar rates to Semibalanus. We used NOAA weather reanalysis data and our mechanistic simulation model of intertidal animal body temperatures to hindcast the thermal environmental change near historical geographic limits in Europe for the past 55 years. Results indicate that changes in the southern limit of S. balanoides are due to intolerance of winter body temperatures above 10°C, leading to reproductive failure. Results for Diopatra are ambiguous: based on the northern extension of its range, either cold winters or cool summers limit its range, while gaps in its distribution are consistent with limitation by cooler summer conditions. The parallel shifts of D. neapolitana on sedimentary shores and Semibalanus on rocky shores suggest that similar climatic factors control the geographic limits of both species. The intertidal zone is a model system for examining the effects of climate change on biogeographic change both because of the rapidity of its response, and because the rich historical record allows direct tests of hypotheses. Niubeiliang National Nature Reserve (NNR, 108°45′–109°04′E, 33°47′–33°56′N) is located on the eastern range of the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi Province, China and spans the southern and northern slopes of Mt. Qinling. A transect survey and investigation were carried out in NNR to determine the fauna characteristics and ecological distribution of carnivora and artiodactyla from May 2003 to August 2004. The NNR has 18 mammals (carnivore and artiodactyl), two of which belong to the first class and seven to the second class of state key protected wildlife in China. The results of this study indicated that ungulates were abundant in the NNR, as all ungulates that were distributed within Mt. Qinling could be found within the reserve. However, only 45.5% of the carnivores distributed within Mt. Qinling were detected within the NNR. Among the mammals, there were 12 oriental species (66.7%), 1 palearctic specie (5.5%) and 5 widely-distributed species (27.8%). The NNR is a crossing area of palearctic species and oriental species on the zoogeographical regions, and it is a transitional area from the oriental realm to the palearctic realm. The results of the analysis on the ecological distribution of carnivore and artiodactyl in the area showed that their elevation ranges had large differences. The species whose elevation ranges above 1 300 m, about 1 000 m, and in 450–700 m occupied one third respectively. The results also indicated that species richness for the memals in the NNR peaked at a middle elevation (rising at first, then descending with the increase in elevation). Not only on the southern slope, but also on the northern slope of Mt. Qinling, the number of species distributed in the area at 1 800–2 200 m a.s.l. was the largest (more than 80%), while the number of species distributed in the area above 2 600 m a.s.l. was the smallest (about 50%). Elevation gradients of species richness for the mammals in the NNR also embodied the mammal distributions among the vegetation types. The number of species distributed in the mixed coniferous and broadleaf deciduous forest at middle elevations was the largest, while the number of species distributed in the broadleaf deciduous forest at middle and low elevations, subalpine coniferous forest, subalpine shrubbery and meadow was relatively smaller. A comparative study of species assemblages and population densities was conducted on Amazonian monkey communities in 16 areas, ranging from 3°S latitude in northern Peru to 18°S latitude in southern Bolivia. The habitats ranged from several types of tropical rain forest in the more northern latitudes to dry, deciduous forest in the southernmost study area. The monkey populations of three of the study areas have historically received light hunting pressure; the rest have been moderately to heavily hunted. A transect census technique was used to estimate the relative and absolute densities of all diurnal monkey species except Cebuella pygmaea. The number of coexisting monkey species ranged from 4–6 in the southern areas to 12–14 in the northern areas. The reduction in species richness in central and southern areas of Bolivia is probably attributable to several inimical habitat factors. Predation by humans was found to be the single most important factor affecting monkey densities. Monkey densities, and especially biomasses, were much lower in areas not protected from hunting than in protected areas. Hunting did not affect all species equally. Larger-sized species are hunted more and have severely reduced numbers in unprotected areas, whereas the densities of smaller species are not noticeably diminished in unprotected areas. Large, herbivorous monkey species contributed the major proportion of the total monkey biomass in protected areas. The strong influence of hunting has largely obscured the effects of other factors on population densities.  相似文献

Based on the maritime data collected from 23°30′–33°00′ N and 118°30′–128°00′ E of the East China Sea (ECS) in four seasons during 1997–2000, the dynamics of medusae diversity and their causes were analyzed. A total of 103 medusae species were identified, and these species mainly distributed in the southern and northern offshore areas of the ECS. Species diversity index (H′) of medusae was higher in the south than those in the north, higher in summer and winter than in spring and autumn, and higher in offshore than in the nearshore areas. The species number was closely correlated with H′ value, whereas the abundance of species had no significant relationship with the diversity index. The lower H′ value of the nearshore in spring and autumn resulted from the aggregation of Muggiaea atlantica in the south nearshore and Diphyes chamissonis in the north nearshore. In addition, water temperature, followed by salinity, is the main environmental factor influencing the distribution of species diversity. The H′ value was related to the water temperature at the 10 m layer in winter and spring, and it was associated with the surface water temperature in summer and with the 10 m-salinity-layer in autumn. In spring and summer, the isoline distribution of H′ value reflected the direction of the Taiwan Warm Current and the variation of the water masses in the ECS. In winter, the isoline of the H′ value indicated the incursion of Kuroshio current. In conclusion, the H′ isoline is an good indicator for water masses in ECS. __________ Translated from Biodiversity Science, 2006, 14(6): 508–516 [译自:生物多样性]  相似文献

The spiraling whitefly Aleurodicus dispersus (Russell) is an insect pest that causes substantial damage to ornamental plants, shade trees and food crops. It was first observed in Benin in 1993. Two host specific parasitoids, Encarsia dispersa and E. guadeloupae, fortuitously introduced with its host, were recovered in the second half of 1993 in Southern Benin. Survey results from 1993 to 1995 (already published) showed the decline in the population of A. dispersus due to the parasitoids, and the spread from Cotonou (6°10′N) in a northern directions of both parasitoids and their host. Results from similar field surveys from 1996 to 2003 document that the spiraling whitefly and both its parasitoids spread to Natitingou (10°20′N, 540 km) in 1995 and Bembereke (10°14′N) in 1996, whereby E. dispersa arrived within less than a year of its host and quickly became dominant in the two localities on the northern front. In subsequent years, the parasitoids established their geographical niches, with E. dispersa being more abundant (up to 89%) in the coastal south bellow latitude 7°30′N and E. guadeloupae (up to 84%) in the north between latitudes 7°30′ and 10°30′N. We conclude that the gradual replacement observed over ten years and over 500 km has to do with longitudinal shifts in the length and severity of the dry season and the higher susceptibility to these conditions by E. dispersa.  相似文献

Lignan concentrations in Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) knotwood were studied in two long-term nitrogen fertilised experimental sites: a boreal site (66°5′N, 27°07′E) close to the Arctic tree line in northern Finland and a boreal site (61°10′N, 26°03′E) in southern Finland. Altogether 20 mature trees, representing five different size classes, were felled in the autumn 2002 and knots of the largest and smallest diameter in each whorl at the height of 4 m were analysed. Within-stem variation of knotwood lignans was studied at the 4 m intervals from stump height to the top from five control trees in the southern site. The following knotwood lignans were identified with GC-MS: hydroxymatairesinol (two isomers), secoisolariciresinol, α-conidendrin, α-conidendric acid, isohydroxymatairesinol, lariciresinol, lignan A, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, todolactol A and isoliovil. The predominant lignan in Norway spruce knotwood was hydroxymatairesinol comprising approximately 77% of the total concentration of lignans. In mature trees in the southern site, the lignan concentrations were highest close to the starting point of the living branches. In the northern site, the total concentration of knotwood lignans was significantly higher (approximately 14% of the dry mass) than in the southern site (approximately 5.4% of the dry mass). In the northern site in control trees, a negative linear correlation was detected between branch diameter and hydroxymatairesinol concentration, but the similar correlation was not detected in fertilised trees or in the trees of the southern site. The possible reasons for higher hydroxymatairesinol concentrations in the northern knots were discussed.  相似文献

Caprella mutica Schurin, 1935 was first described from sub-boreal areas of north–east Asia. In less than 40 years C. mutica has spread throughout the northern hemisphere and the first recorded sighting in the southern hemisphere is reported here. Caprella mutica has been introduced to temperate oceanic coasts between latitudes of 25 and 70 °N. Outside its native range, C. mutica has only been found in areas of human activity, including ports, aquaculture facilities and an oilrig; the species has not yet been found in natural habitats. Shipping and aquaculture transfers are the most likely long distance vectors; recreational boating and drifting weed are the most likely short distance vectors. Temperature and salinity do not explain the small-scale distribution of C. mutica on the west coast of Scotland; globally its annual temperature range is 0–22°C. This suggests that the local scale distribution of C. mutica is potentially limited by the availability of suitable transportation vectors during the dispersal phase rather than by physical environmental factors following release.  相似文献

Two methods were used to measure in-stream nitrogen loss in the Connecticut River during studies conducted in April and August 2005. A mass balance on nitrogen inputs and output for two study reaches (55 and 66 km), at spring high flow and at summer low flow, was computed on the basis of total nitrogen concentrations and measured river discharges in the Connecticut River and its tributaries. In a 10.3 km subreach of the northern 66 km reach, concentrations of dissolved N2 were also measured during summer low flow and compared to modeled N2 concentrations (based on temperature and atmospheric gas exchange rates) to determine the measured “excess” N2 that indicates denitrification. Mass balance results showed no in-stream nitrogen loss in either reach during April 2005, and no nitrogen loss in the southern 55 km study reach during August 2005. In the northern 66 km reach during August 2005, however, nitrogen output was 18% less than the total nitrogen inputs to the reach. N2 sampling results gave an estimated rate of N2 production that would remove 3.3% of the nitrogen load in the river over the 10.3 km northern sub-reach. The nitrogen losses measured in the northern reach in August 2005 may represent an approximate upper limit for nitrogen attenuation in the Connecticut River because denitrification processes are most active during warm summer temperatures and because the study was performed during the annual low-flow period when total nitrogen loads are small.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in 2000–2007 near Medusa Bay (73°21′N, 80°32′ E) and along the Agapa River (from 70°11′N, 86°15′ E. down to the mouth 71°26′ N, 89°13′ E), in the northwestern and central parts of the Taimyr Peninsula. White-fronted goose nests are usually spread in the tundra or placed in 1–3 nest colonies near nests or staging points of snowy owls, peregrine falcons, or rough-legged buzzards. The intent of white-fronted geese to breed near birds of prey or owls increases sharply when arctic fox numbers are high. In the area near Medusa Bay, white-fronted geese nest much closer to peregrine falcon nests than in the area along the Agra River. At the latter location, white-fronted geese lose the competition to red-breasted geese, which are more numerous here. Bean geese, in spite of their greater size and ability to protect their nests against arctic foxes, really tend to breed near peregrine falcons or buzzards, where they manage to compete with red-breasted geese.  相似文献

Cold environmental temperature is detrimental to reproduction by oviparous squamate reptiles by prolonging incubation period, negatively affecting embryonic developmental processes, and by killing embryos in eggs directly. Because low soil temperature may prevent successful development of embryos in eggs in nests, the geographic distributions of oviparous species may be influenced by the thermal requirements of embryos. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that low incubation temperature determines the northern distributional limit of the oviparous lizard Sceloporus undulatus. To compare the effects of incubation temperature on incubation length, egg and hatchling survival, and hatchling phenotypic traits, we incubated eggs of S. undulatus under temperature treatments that simulated the thermal environment that eggs would experience if located in nests within their geographic range at 37°N and north of the species’ present geographic range at latitudes of 44 and 42°N. After hatching, snout–vent length (SVL), mass, tail length, body condition (SVL relative to mass), locomotor performance, and growth rate were measured for each hatchling. Hatchlings were released at a field site to evaluate growth and survival under natural conditions. Incubation at temperatures simulating those of nests at 44°N prolonged incubation and resulted in hatchlings with shorter SVL relative to mass, shorter tails, shorter hind limb span, slower growth, and lower survival than hatchlings from eggs incubated at temperatures simulating those of nests at 37 and 42°N. We also evaluated the association between environmental temperature and the northern distribution of S. undulatus. We predicted that the northernmost distributional limit of S. undulatus would be associated with locations that provide the minimum heat sum (∼495 degree-days) required to complete embryonic development. Based on air and soil temperatures, the predicted northern latitudinal limit of S. undulatus would lie at ∼40.5–41.5°N. Our predicted value closely corresponds to the observed latitudinal limit in the eastern United States of ∼40°N. Our results suggest that soil temperatures at northern latitudes are not warm enough for a sufficient length of time to permit successful incubation of S. undulatus embryos. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that incubation temperature is an important factor limiting the geographic distributions of oviparous reptile species at high latitudes and elevations.  相似文献

The McDonald Islands (53°03S, 72°36E) are situated in the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 43 km west of Heard Island. These sub-Antarctic islands comprise McDonald Island itself, measuring ca.1 × 2 km, and two much smaller rocky outcrops, Flat Island and Meyer Rock. Five species of vascular plant occur on the islands. Only four species of moss were found, no hepatics, and eight species of lichen, together with algal and fungal species. Phanerogamic vegetation, comprising grassland and cushion-carpet herbfield, covers about one-third of the main island. Elsewhere, vegetation is absent or restricted to cryptogamic species. The distribution and occurrence of vegetation are strongly influenced by salt deposition, exposure to wind, substrate stability and biotic influences, particularly the very large assemblages of sea birds. The species-depauperate McDonald Islands are unique and have suffered negligible human impact. A management plan has been prepared; its implementation will be assisted by the information in this paper. The islands' protection will be further enhanced by an affirmative final decision on the current proposal for World Heritage Listing of Heard and the McDonald Islands. Summary Red clover Rhizobium strains, isolated from different locations between latitudes 60° and 63°30′ N in Finland, were tested for their adaptation to low temperatures. 31 strains were tested for growth at 5°C, 10°C, 15°C and 18°C in pure culture. No strain grew at 5°C. At the other temperatures there were differences between the strains, but the same strains grew fast at all temperatures. Ten strains were investigated for nodulation and acetylene reduction in phytotrons in two different climates, one simulating the growing season in southern and the other in northern Finland. There were differences between the strains in their ability to nodulate their host plant, and northern strains showed higher nitrogenase activity than southern strains in the cold climate.  相似文献

During spring 1986 and winter 1987, zooplankton samples were collected over the entire North Sea by means of a multi-closing net-system. Before taxonomic treatment, wet weight estimates and carbon content conversions were carried out. From this data set, 4 962 522 tons zooplankton biomass (dry weight) were estimated for the whole North Sea during the spring survey. High biomasses (more than 100 mg C/m3) were located in areas between the Orkneys and the Shetlands, off the mouth of the Firth of Forth, the Channel and the river Rhine. Considerable zooplankton biomass was also found parallel to the Danish west coast. Furthermore, a narrow tongue of high biomass (partly greater than 200 mg C/m3) intruded from the north, between 1 °E and 4 °E, into the northern North Sea, turning to the east at 56°N, and continuing into deeper water layers to form a left turning “helix” of high biomass in the central part of the North Sea. During the winter survey the carbon content of the zooplankton stock was a factor 10 lower than in summer. Altogether, 519340 tons of zooplankton biomass (dry weight) were estimated in winter. Centres of relatively high biomass were located off the mouth of the rivers Rhine, Weser and Elbe and off the British east coast moving in a cyclic way across the Dogger Bank into the central North Sea. A further maximum of zooplankton abundance was found in the Skagerrak region. However, an intrusion of zooplankton from the shelf edge into the North Sea was not observed in winter. A qualitative analysis of species composition showed that small copepods dominated the zooplankton in the southern and eastern North Sea. The “eddy” of high biomass in the northern North Sea observed in spring, however, was mostly shaped by the large copepodCalanus finmarchicus (70–90%). The distribution of zooplankton biomass in the North Sea is discussed in relation to the hydrographic conditions and to the biology of the dominant species.  相似文献

The distribution of Dreissena polymorpha in the northeastern part of the Kama River basin is limited to the area with the following geographic coordinates: 59°37′–54°00′ N and 57°10′–49°03′ E. The range of the zebra mussel is continuous along the Kama, Belaya, and Ufa rivers. Isolated populations of this mollusk exist in the Belaya and Vyatka river floodplains. The distribution of dreissena in the running waters of the Kama River basin is limited by the potamal conditions.  相似文献

Red-breasted goose colonies have been studied near Medusa Bay (73°21′N, 80°32′E), on the northwestern Taimyr Peninsula, and along the Agapa River (70°11′N, 86°15′E) down to its mouth (71°26′N, 89° 13′E), in the central Taimyr Peninsula. Red-breasted geese nesting near peregrine falcons are protected by the falcons from arctic foxes; however, they are sometimes attacked by the falcons themselves. In the colonies near peregrine falcon nests, the vast majority of goose nests were situated no farther than 100 m from the falcon nest. When food is abundant, falcons protect a larger area around their nest. The distance between the falcon nest and the surrounding goose nests is inversely related to the falcon’s activity. In years of higher falcon activity, falcons prevent red-breasted geese from nesting as close to their nest as in years of lower falcon activity. Additional stimuli are required for red-breasted geese to form colonies near rough-legged buzzard nests. The distance between snowy owl nests and red-breasted goose nests was smaller when arctic foxes were abundant than when they were scarce.  相似文献

Mountain Yunmeng (37°20′N, 113°54′E) is 1 520m above sea level and part of the Taihang Mountains. With a temperate continental monsoon climate, the mountain area belongs to the warm temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest region. This thesis was mostly based on the study of more than 2 000 packages of bryophytes which were mainly collected by the authors in Mt. Yunmeng, Hebei Province. Of these specimens, there are 36 families, 99 genera, and 244 species (including 17 varieties, 5 formes, and 1 subspecies) which have been studied and identified. Moreover, it could be seen that Mt. Yunmeng has a diverse population of bryophytes. The bryoflora could be divided into 10 geographical elements: north temperate element make up the majority, accounting for 52.11% of the entire known bryoflora, and another belongs to the East Asian element, accounting for 19.25%. All temperate elements, not including 14 endemic to China and 31 Cosmopolitans, were added up to 188 species, which took 88.3% of all the entire known bryoflora in Mt. Yunmeng. However, there were only 11 Subtropical and Tropical elements. To all appearances, the bryoflora of Mt. Yunmeng showed obvious temperate characteristics. The authors conclude that the bryoflora in Mt. Yunmeng belongs to the middle type, between the warm and dry northern mountain area and the warm and damp southern mountain area. The microclimatic environment greatly influences the bryoflora. __________ Translated from Guihaia, 2005, 25 (3) [译自: 广西植物, 2005,25(3)]  相似文献
