In the last 15 years, a debate has emerged about the validity of the famous Hodgkin-Huxley model for nerve impulse. Mechanical models have been proposed. This note reviews the experimental properties of the nerve impulse and discusses the proposed alternatives. The experimental data, which rule out some of the alternative suggestions, show that while the Hodgkin-Huxley model may not be complete, it nevertheless includes essential features that should not be overlooked in the attempts made to improve, or supersede, it.  相似文献

Sterility virulence, or the reduction in host fecundity due to infection, occurs in many host–pathogen systems. Notably, sterility virulence is more common for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than for directly transmitted pathogens, while other forms of virulence tend to be limited in STIs. This has led to the suggestion that sterility virulence may have an adaptive explanation. By focusing upon finite population models, we show that the observed patterns of sterility virulence can be explained by consideration of the epidemiological differences between STIs and directly transmitted pathogens. In particular, when pathogen transmission is predominantly density invariant (as for STIs), and mortality is density dependent, sterility virulence can be favored by demographic stochasticity, whereas if pathogen transmission is predominantly density dependent, as is common for most directly transmitted pathogens, sterility virulence is disfavored. We show these conclusions can hold even if there is a weak selective advantage to sterilizing.  相似文献

A glucose-sensing mechanism has been described in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that regulates expression of glucose transporter genes. The sensor proteins Snf3 and Rgt2 are homologous to the transporters they regulate. Snf3 and Rgt2 are integral plasma membrane proteins with unique carboxy-terminal domains that are predicted to be localized in the cytoplasm. In a recent paper Ozcan and colleagues [Ozcan S, et al. EMBO J 1998; 17:2556-2773 (Ref. 1)] present evidence that the cytoplasmic domains of Snf3 and Rgt2 are required to transmit a glucose signal. They provide additional evidence to support their earlier assertion [Ozcan S, et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1996;93:12428-12432 (Ref. 2)] that glucose transport via Snf3 and Rgt2 is not involved in glucose sensing but, rather, that these proteins behave like glucose receptors. Other examples of transporter homologs with regulatory functions have recently been described in fungi as well [Madi L, et al. Genetics 1997; 146:499-508 (Ref. 3). and Didion T, et al. Mol Microbiol 1998;27:643-650 (Ref. 4)]. The identification of this class of nutrient sensors is an important step in elucidating the complex of regulatory mechanisms that leads to adaptation of fungi to different environments.  相似文献

Managers and policy makers depend on empirical research to guide and support biosecurity measures that mitigate introduced species’ impacts. Research contributing to this knowledge base generally uses null hypothesis significance testing to determine the significance of data patterns. However, reliance on traditional statistical significance testing methods, combined with small effect and sample size and large variability inherent to many impact studies, may obscure effects on native species, communities or ecosystems. This may result in false certainty of no impact. We investigated potential Type II error rates and effect sizes for 31 non-significant empirical evaluations of impact for introduced algal and crustacean species. We found low power consistently led to acceptance of Type II errors at rates 5.6–19 times greater than Type I errors (despite moderate to large effect sizes). Our results suggest that introduced species for which impact studies have statistically non-significant outcomes (often interpreted as “no impact”) may potentially have large impacts that are missed due to small sample or effect sizes and/or high variation. This alarming willingness to “miss” impacts has severe implications for conservation efforts, including under-managing species’ impacts and discounting the costs of Type II errors.  相似文献

The bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia can all be cured with a single dose of antibiotic. Unfortunately, however, these infections often remain undiagnosed as many infected individuals have few if any symptoms. Diagnostic tests with high sensitivity and specificity are available for all three infections but, owing to their expense and the lack of laboratory capacity, most people in developing countries do not have access to these tests. There is a great need for simple, cheap diagnostic tests for STIs that can be performed at the point of care, enabling treatment to be given immediately. It is hoped that recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of these infections, and the availability of the complete genome sequences for each causative organism, will lead to the development of improved point-of-care tests that will reduce the burden of these diseases in developing countries.  相似文献

The mechanisms responsible for the preservation of duplicate genes have been debated for more than 70 years. Recently, Lynch and Force have proposed a new explanation: subfunctionalization--after duplication the two gene copies specialize to perform complementary functions. We investigate the probability that subfunctionalization occurs, the amount of time after duplication that it takes for the outcome to be resolved, and the relationship of these quantities to the population size and mutation rates.  相似文献

It is a long established convention that the relationship between sounds and meanings of words is essentially arbitrary—typically the sound of a word gives no hint of its meaning. However, there are numerous reported instances of systematic sound–meaning mappings in language, and this systematicity has been claimed to be important for early language development. In a large-scale corpus analysis of English, we show that sound–meaning mappings are more systematic than would be expected by chance. Furthermore, this systematicity is more pronounced for words involved in the early stages of language acquisition and reduces in later vocabulary development. We propose that the vocabulary is structured to enable systematicity in early language learning to promote language acquisition, while also incorporating arbitrariness for later language in order to facilitate communicative expressivity and efficiency.  相似文献

Neutral ecological theory comes in two flavors—a two-stage model with space implicit and a spatially explicit version. Reconciliation of the two flavors has proven problematic. Panmixis, an implicit assumption of the two-stage model, is neither realistic for nor supported by tropical forest trees. However, in spatially explicit versions, stochastic species input in local communities is still necessary to retain high species richness. A unified theory of biodiversity must include both stochasticity and relevant ecological mechanisms.  相似文献

By a number of measures, alanine is poised at the threshold between those amino acids that promote the membrane integration of transmembrane alpha-helices and those that do not. We have measured the preference of alanine to partition into the lipid-water interface region over the central acyl chain region of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane both by its ability to promote the formation of so-called helical hairpins, i.e. a pair of transmembrane helices separated by a tight turn, and by mapping the position relative to the membrane of the lumenal end of a transmembrane alpha-helix that ends with a block of 10 alanines. Both measures show that Ala has a weak but distinct preference for the interface region, which is in agreement with recent biophysical measurements on pentaeptide partitioning in simple water-lipid or water-octanol systems (Jayasinghe, S., Hristova, K., and White, S. H. (2001) J. Mol. Biol. 312, 927-934). Considering the complexity of the translocon-mediated insertion of membrane proteins into the ER, the agreement between the biochemical and biophysical measurements is striking and suggests that protein-lipid interactions are already important during the very early steps of membrane protein assembly in the ER.  相似文献

Historically many bacteria have been classified as obligate anaerobes. They have been construed as wholly intolerant of oxygen, a feature that was originally ascribed to their lack of superoxide dismutases and catalases. Clostridial species were regarded as classic examples. We now know that this view is quite wrong: enzymes that scavenge superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and even oxygen itself abound in anaerobes. In the current issue of Molecular Microbiology, Hillmann et al. demonstrate that full production of these proteins can allow Clostridium acetobutylicum to survive and even grow in oxygenated culture medium. Evidently, oxidative defences in anaerobes can be robust. In all likelihood, they are critical for the movement of bacteria through aerobic environments to new anaerobic habitats.  相似文献

The traditional view of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean as an isolated system is now being challenged by the recent discovery at the Antarctic Peninsula of adult spider crabs Hyas areneus from the North Atlantic and of larvae of subpolar marine invertebrates. These observations question whether the well described biogeographical similarities between the benthic fauna of the Antarctic Peninsula and the Magellan region of South America result from history (the two regions were once contiguous), or from a previously unrecognized low level of faunal exchange. Such exchange might be influenced by regional climate change, and also exacerbated by changes in human impact.  相似文献

When syphilis first appeared in Europe in 1495, it was an acute and extremely unpleasant disease. After only a few years it was less severe than it once was, and it changed over the next 50 years into a milder, chronic disease. The severe early symptoms may have been the result of the disease being introduced into a new host population without any resistance mechanisms, but the change in virulence is most likely to have happened because of selection favouring milder strains of the pathogen. The symptoms of the virulent early disease were both debilitating and obvious to potential sexual partners of the infected, and strains that caused less obvious or painful symptoms would have enjoyed a higher transmission rate.  相似文献
