Pyrite oxidation in the underground mining environment of Iron Mountain, California, has created the most acidic pH values ever reported in aquatic systems. Sulfate values as high as 120000 mg l–1 and iron as high as 27600 mg l–1 have been measured in the mine water, which also carries abundant other dissolved metals including Al, Zn, Cu, Cd, Mn, Sb and Pb. Extreme acidity and high metal concentrations apparently do not preclude the presence of an underground acidophilic food web, which has developed with bacterial biomass at the base and heliozoans as top predators. Slimes, oil-like films, flexible and inflexible stalactites, sediments, water and precipitates were found to have distinctive communities. A variety of filamentous and non-filamentous bacteria grew in slimes in water having pH values <1.0. Fungal hyphae colonize stalactites dripping pH 1.0 water; they may help to form these drip structures. Motile hypotrichous ciliates and bdelloid rotifers are particularly abundant in slimes having a pH of 1.5. Holdfasts of the iron bacterium Leptothrix discophora attach to biofilms covering pools of standing water having a pH of 2.5 in the mine. The mine is not a closed environment – people, forced air flow and massive flushing during high intensity rainfall provide intermittent contact between the surface and underground habitats, so the mine ecosystem probably is not a restricted one.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals commonly known to impact the environment and other related trace elements were quantified in the water bodies of nine Ethiopian rift-valley lakes and six rivers (their inflows) as well as in effluents from two factories. In about half of the samples the concentrations of As was 10–700 g l–1 and Se, ranged from 10 to 28 g l–1, were much higher than the maximum permissible level (MPL) according to international standards for drinking water. Mercury (Hg) was detected in four lakes and one river with high values ranging from 2 to 165 g l–1. Concentrations of Mo in three soda lakes were as high as 544–2590 g l–1. Iron (Fe) was found in high concentrations (567–4969 g l–1) in three lakes, which are known to be discolored from inorganic colloids. Levels of Cd, Pb, and Cr ranged between 5 and 9, 12 and 20 and 104 and 121 g l–1, respectively. The rest of the heavy metals analyzed, Ba, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn, were either not detected in the samples or were found in much lower concentrations than the MPL for drinking water. Effluent from a tannery contained about 15, 141, 523, and 19 g l–1 of As, Cr, Fe, and Se, respectively, and effluent from a textile factory contained high concentrations of As (10.6), Hg (3.8) and Se (20) g l–1. Compared to more industrialized regions and other African lakes the concentrations of heavy metals in Ethiopian rift-valley lakes (with the exception of the soda lakes) and their inflows were low.  相似文献

The chemical and biological characteristics of a Corsican river that drains contaminated waters and sediment from an abandoned realgar mine were studied. The concentrations of pollutants such as As and Sb were found to be notably high. For example, in the Presa River, downstream the realgar mine, the mean As concentrations in the water and in the sediment were 3010 g 1-1 and 9450 g g-1 respectively. Species richness and abundance of benthic invertebrates decreased downstream the As mine. The disappearance of oligochaetes, leeches and a rarity of mayfly populations have been evidenced. On the contrary, a large increase in species belonging to stoneflies and gastropods was found. Some species like Baetis cyrneus, Ephemerella ignita, Sericostoma clypeatum and Ibisia marginata were more sensitive to As and Sb concentrations while others species like Ancylus fluviatilis, Isoperla insularis, Hydropsyche cyrnotica, Caenis luctuosa and Silonella aurata were less sensitive. The benthic invertebrates show different reactions in this contaminated environment, which could be explained by their feeding behaviours and certain morphological characteristics.  相似文献

Seasonal fluctuation in river stage strongly affects the ecological functioning of tropical floodplain lakes. This study was conducted to assess the influence of hydrological seasonality on bacterial production and abundance in two floodplain lakes of the Autana River, a blackwater river in the Middle Orinoco basin, Venezuela. Water samples for nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll a, and microbiological determinations were collected in two floodplain lakes and in the mainstem of the river during 1997–98. DOC and chlorophyll a concentrations were similar between mainstem and lake sites during high water when river and lakes were well connected but became different during the period of low water when the interaction was minimal. Higher values of bacterial production were observed in the floodplain lakes (0.62–1.03 g C l–1 h–1) compared to the mainstem sites (0.17–0.19 g C l–1 h–1) during the period of low water, while during the period of high water river and lake sites showed similar levels (0.04 g C l–1 h–1). Bacterial numbers followed bacterial production in the floodplain lakes, reaching higher numbers during the period of low water (1.41–2.40 × 106 cells ml–1). Availability of substrate and inorganic nutrients, pH, and inputs and losses of bacterial cells could be determining the observed seasonal patterns in bacterial production and abundance. The Autana lakes exhibited a strong seasonal pattern in the chemical and biological conditions, showing higher productivity during the lentic phase that lasted between 5 and 6 months.  相似文献

A method for the analysis of acetate turnover in a coastal marine sediment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The concentrations of volatile fatty acids were measured in the pore water of sediment from the Limfjorden, Denmark. The pore water was freeze-dried and the acids, which were redissolved in formic acid, were analyzed by gas chromatography on a Carbopack column. The limit of detection was 0.1 mol l–1 pore water. The concentration ranges (mol l–1 pore water) were as follows: 0.1 to 6.0 for acetate; <0.1 to 0.6 for propionate, and <0.1 to 0.5 for butyrate. The rate constants for the disappearance of injected tracer concentrations of U-14C-acetate were measured at 2 cm depth intervals in sediment strata (0 to 10 cm). The rate constant for acetate turnover at 4 to 6 cm depth did not vary greatly with season, 2.1 h–1, SD 0.6 for 7 values. In spring, the rate constants were highest in the 0 to 2 cm stratum and decreased with sediment depth. The calculated rates for acetate turnover of 7.2 mmol m–2 day–1 for early spring (2°C) and of 19.6 mmol m–2 day–1 for late autumn (7°C) were higher than would be expected from published values for carbon oxidation by sulfate in these sediments.  相似文献

Synopsis Arsenic persists in Chautauqua Lake, New York waters 13 years after cessation of herbicide (sodium arsenite) application and continues to cycle within the lake. Arsenic concentrations in lake water ranged from 22.4–114.81 g l–1, = 49.0 ag l–1. Well water samples generally contained less than 10 g l–1 arsenic. Arsenic concentrations in lake water exceeded U.S. Public Health Service recommended maximum concentrations (10 g l–1) and many samples exceeded the maximum permissible limit (50 g l–1). Fish accumulated arsenic from water but did not magnify it. Fish to water arsenic ratios ranged from 0.4–41.6. Black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) contained the highest arsenic concentrations (0.14–2.04 g g–1 ), X = 0.7 g g–1) while perch (Perca flavescens), muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) contained the lowest concentrations (0.02–0.13 g g–1). Arsenic concentrations in fish do not appear to pose a health hazard for human consumers.  相似文献

Isolated embryos ofKarwinskia humboldtiana were cultured in vitro. The growth of embryos and development to plantlets on woody plant medium supplemented with indole-3-acetic acid 6.10-2 mol l–1, gibberellic acid (GA3) 3.10-2 mol l–1, and 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) 2 mol l–1 was obtained. Multiplication of shoots and rooting of excised shoots has been achieved. Degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons by Burkholderia cepacia 2A-12   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
A new strain of bacterium degrading polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Burkholderia cepacia 2A-12, was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. Of three PAHs, the isolated strain could utilize naphthalene (Nap) and phenanthrene (Phe) as a sole carbon source but not pyrene (Pyr). However, the strain could degrade Pyr when a cosubstrate such as yeast extract (YE) was supplemented. The PAH degradation rate of the strain was enhanced by the addition of other organic materials such as YE, peptone, glucose, and sucrose. YE was a particularly effective additive in stimulating cell growth as well as PAH degradation. When 1 g YE l–1, an optimum concentration, was supplemented into the basal salt medium (BSM) with 215 mg Phe l–1, the specific growth rate (0.30 h–1) and Phe-degrading rate (29.6 mol l–1 h–1) were enhanced approximately ten and three times more than those obtained in the BSM with 215 mg Phe l–1, respectively. Both cell growth and PAH degradation rates were increased with increasing Phe and Pyr concentrations, and B. cepacia 2A-12 had a tolerance against Phe and Pyr toxicity at the high concentration of 730–760 mg l–1. Through kinetic analysis, the maximum specific growth rate ( max) and PAH degrading rate ( max) for Phe were obtained as 0.39 h–1 and 300 mol l–1 h–1, respectively. Also, max and max for Pyr were 0.27 h–1 and 52 mol l–1 h–1, respectively. B. cepacia 2A-12 could simultaneously degrade crude oil as well as PAHs, indicating that this bacterium is very useful for the removal of oils and PAHs contaminants.  相似文献

Catabolites related to tricarboxylic acid cycle affected growth and carotenogenesis in Phaffia rhodozyma. Glutamate, glutamine, aspartate, asparagine and proline at 75 mM of N increased biomass from 2 g l–1 to 2.9–4.7 g l–1 but decreased carotenoid from 420 g g–1 yeast to 200–260 g g–1 yeast in strain 67-385. However, simple nitrogen sources did not decrease carotenoid formation. Tricarboxylic acid intermediates repressed carotenogenesis to a less degree than the corresponding amino acids. Carotenoid hyper-producing mutants were impaired in nitrogen utilization. These results indicated that nitrogen assimilation and the concentrations of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates are involved in regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis.  相似文献

We intended to evaluate the relative contribution of primary production versus allochthonous carbon in the production of bacterial biomass in a mesotrophic estuary. Different spatial and temporal ranges were observed in the values of bacterioplankton biomass (31–273 g C l–1) and production (0.1–16.0 g C l–1 h–1, 1.5–36.8 mg C m–2 h–1) as well as in phytoplankton abundance (50–1700 g C l–1) and primary production (0.1–512.9 g C l–1 h–1, 1.5–512.9 mg C m–2 h–1). Bacterial specific growth rate (0.10–1.68 d–1) during the year did not fluctuate as much as phytoplankton specific growth rate (0.02–0.74 d–1). Along the salinity gradient and towards the inner estuary, bacterio- and phytoplankton biomass and production increased steadily both in the warm and cold seasons. The maximum geographical increase observed in these variables was 12 times more for the bacterial community and 8 times more for the phytoplankton community. The warm to cold season ratios of the biological variables varied geographically and according to these variables. The increase at the warm season achieved its maximum in the biomass production, particularly in the marine zone and at high tide (20 and 112 times higher in bacterial and phytoplankton production, respectively). The seasonal variation in specific growth rate was most noticeable in phytoplankton, with seasonal ratios of 3–26. The bacterial community of the marine zone responded positively – generating seasonal ratios of 1–13 in bacterial specific growth rate – to the strong warm season increment in phytoplankton growth rate in this zone. In the brackish water zone where even during the warm season allochthonous carbon accounted for 41% (on average) of the bacterial carbon demand, the seasonal ratio of bacterial specific growth rate varied from about 1 to 2. During the warm season, an average of 21% of the primary production was potentially sufficient to support the whole bacterial production. During the cold months, however, the total primary production would be either required or even insufficient to support bacterial production. The estuary turned then into a mostly heterotrophic system. However, the calculated annual production of biomass by bacterio- and phytoplankton in the whole ecosystem showed that auto- and heterotrophic production was balanced in this estuary.  相似文献

Plant cell and suspension cultures have been established from stem cuttings of Picrasma quassioides Bennett. The effect of 244 different types/concentrations of plant growth regulators on growth and quassin accumulation in callus tissue was investigated. Best growth, in terms of wet/dry weight after four weeks growth, was obtained on B5 media supplemented with 2% glucose, 10% coconut milk, 0.5 mg.l–1 zeatin riboside and 1.5 mg.l–1 IBA. The highest yields of quassin (0.014–0.018%) were detected on this same media supplemented with 1.0 mg.l–1 IBA and varying concentrations of zeatin riboside. Suspension cultures were easily established on B5 media supplemented with 2% glucose, 1.0 mg.l–1 2,4-D and 0.5 mg.l–1 kinetin. The carbon source had a marked effect on quassin accumulation with 0.32% quassin being detected when cells were grown in 2% galactose. The contribution of potential export of materials from bottom sedimentsand salt marshes into the water column of a shallow estuarine system of Ria deAveiro to the observed high bacterial productivity in the mid section of thisestuary was evaluated. Vertical profiles of physical, chemical and bacterialvariables were studied in the marine and brackish water zones, and oftransversal profiles in the brackish zone only. Although the concentrations ofseston (17–241 mg l–1), particulate organiccarbon (3–15.5 mg l–1) and chlorophyll(1.2–7.0 g l–1) varied widely, thevertical and transversal profiles were without much variation. Total bacterialnumber (0.2–8.5 × 109 cellsl–1) and the number of particle-attached bacteria(0.02–2.50 × 109 cellsl–1)along vertical and transversal profiles did not differ much, but the rate ofbacterial production (0.05–14.2 g C l–1h–1) and dissolved organic carbon concentration(6.0–69.2 mg l–1) were frequently highernear the salt marsh margin at the brackish water transect. The increase inproductivity could not be associated with runoff of particulate matter butcoincided with the inputs of dissolved organic carbon. The results of verticaland transversal profiles point to a minor role of particulate matter additionsfrom the salt marsh area or from bed sediments.  相似文献

Environmental stressors as well as the direct or combined effects of pollutants could be harmful to the populations living in a marine environment and the reproductive and nutritive processes could be impaired in a deteriorating environment. Sublethal effects of pollutants were studied in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis L., a good bioaccumulator of contaminants. Blue mussels of 3.5 cm were sampled on a rocky substrate at Pointe-Mitis (48° 40N, 68° 02W) along the coast of the St-Lawrence estuary. Mussels were placed in experimental tanks, fed, supplemented with mineral salts and continuous sea water flow and kept 72 h before the exposure to 0.01 µg l–1 and 0.3 µg l–1 methylmercury hydroxide in the presence or absence of selenium, at a concentration of 125 µg l–1, a possible antagonist of methylmercury. The contamination protocol was performed during 45 days and a 14 day period of recuperation was allowed. The stress caused by the transplantation of mussels in the laboratory tanks and/or by the presence of pollutants was evaluated by a general indicator of stress developed in our laboratory, the measure of the lysosomal membrane fragility (LMF) of the digestive gland, according to the method developed by Moore (1976). The effects of contamination on metabolism were measured by the study of the variations of the malate dehydrogenase activity (MDH), a key enzyme of the aerobic metabolism. The first days of the contamination period led to an increased metabolism in the mantle and to a detoxifying mechanism in the hepatopancreas. At days 22 and 29 of the experiment, the affinity of the MDH was greatly decreased with both concentrations of methylmercury and selenium, suggesting a competitive inhibition of the enzymatic activity by the pollutants. LMF increased as the mussels were kept longer in the tanks. Methylmercury increased the stress undergone by the mussels. LMF gives information about the degree of stress of the organism while the biochemical indicator informs about the metabolic effects of sublethal concentrations of pollutants.  相似文献

Sediments of the river Elbe estuary have been studied to assess their impact on the total nitrogen budget of the estuary. A new laboratory incubation apparatus was used to provide a means of regulating important parameters such as temperature and oxygen concentrations. With this apparatus sediment cores from a typical shallow water area with high organic carbon content were incubated under varying oxygen concentrations in the overlying water. Measurements of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and nitrous oxide in the water phase were carried out and the fluxes between sediment and water phase calculated. During aerobic conditions in the water phase overall nitrate fluxes between + 4 and –3.5 mmol Nm–2d–1 across the sediment/water interface were observed. Under anaerobic conditions the fluxes increased up to –10 mmol Nm–2 d–1. Nitrous oxide was formed within the sediment under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Fluxes into the water phase were highest when the oxygen concentrations in the water phase were low (between 0.1 and 0.6 mg l–1).  相似文献

An early successional wetland complex on a reclaimed surface coal mine in southern Illinois was studied 1985–1987. Seasonally, biomass was low, with above-ground values of 10–210g m–2 and below-ground biomass of 1.5–2435 g m–2. Biomass peaked in spring and did not vary much throughout the remainder of the growing season. Stem densities were high (179–1467 m–2) because large numbers of seedlings became established as falling water levels exposed large areas of mudflats. Fluctuating water levels led to a lack of community zonation. Species diversity (H) was low to moderate over all sites with diversity values ranging between 1.86 and 3.27.  相似文献

Sewage disposal in natural waters is a common problem in most countries. Large inputs of organic matter and nutrients from raw sewage to a weak hydrodynamic environment may lead to deterioration of the water quality. Widely available riverine and estuarine models such as QUAL-2E and MUDLARK can be used to adequately model these situations. Beberibe is a low hydrodynamic estuary that runs through a densely populated region in the Recife Metropolitan Area (RMA), Northeast Brazil, and receives untreated domestic sewage from aproximately 200000 inhabitants. The mouth of the estuary is shallow and tortuous, causing a large reduction in tidal propagation. The low river flow is strongly influenced by rain seasonality at the upstream boundary, with mean values varying from 4.9 m3 s–1 in the wet winter to 1.4 m3 s–1 during the dry summer. A major program to build sewage plants was planned to increase the water quality of the RMA rivers. This study focuses on water quality modelling of the Beberibe estuary basin, formed by the Beberibe River and two small tributaries. Numerical simulations of temperature, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate and faecal coliforms were carried out, targeting the expected population growth in the following 20 years. The QUAL-2E and the MUDLARK models were coupled at the tidal intrusion limit, with the estuarine sector modelled by the MUDLARK while QUAL-2E was used in the upper river. A longitudinal dispersion coefficient related to tidal excursion was introduced into the MUDLARK algorithm to better determine the tidal effect on the distribution of water quality variables. Both models were calibrated successfully and verified with a 4 year water quality data series from the Pernambuco State Environmental Agency (Companhia Pernambucana do Meio Ambiente – CPRH). Results showed that the river flow is a major factor controlling the water quality. Even the most efficient treatment applied was not able to bring water quality up to all desirable levels during dry summer months, mainly considering dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand. Results also confirm that the spring-neap cycle does not significantly affect water quality, probably due to the strong tidal attenuation at the estuary mouth.  相似文献

The acidic caldera lake Caviahue (Patagonia, Argentina) and its main tributaries were studied on two dates during September 1998. The main results are: The acidity of the Lake Caviahue (pH: 2.56, acidity: >5 mmol H+ l–1) is controlled by the extremely acidic Upper Rio Agrio (pH: 1.78, acidity: >20 mmol H+ l–1). The high sulphate contents of both the river and the lake can be attributed to sulphuric acid generated by the uptake of sulphurous gases in the crater lake of Copahue Volcano at approximately 2800 m a.s.l. The high concentrations of both Fe and trace metals (e.g. Cr, Ni, Zn) in Lake Caviahue originate from sulphur–acid interactions with the predominantly volcanic geology of the catchment area. The P-rich andesitic geology influences both the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio and Lake Caviahue. Both were found to have high phosphorus concentrations (300–500 g P l–1) indicative of a high potential for eutrophication. The plankton community consisted of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and rotifers. The phytoplankton was dominated by one green alga, Keratococcus raphidioides (>90% of total abundance) followed by a green sphaerical and Chlamydomonas sp. The total phytoplankton density was about 15000 cells ml–1 in the upper 10 m of the water column. Rotifers were represented by one bdelloid species and their abundance was highly variable (360–4040 ind l–1) in the water columm. In the Upper and Lower Rio Agrio, the epilithic community was dominated by one chloroccocal species and two species of Ulothricales. According to trophic categories based on phytoplankton density and TP concentration, Lake Caviahue can be classified as mesotrophic/eutrophic. However, chlorophyll a concentrations observed were not in agreement with this state.  相似文献

Sixty three percent of the nitrogen (total transported 2041 × 103 kg y–1) and 17% of the phosphorus (total 159 × 103 kg y–1) supplied from terrestrial sources to Vejle Fjord during the period September 1988 to October 1989 is exported to the Kattegat. The sediment nutrient concentrations in the estuary are mainly governed by hydrography and resuspension. The general wind-induced circulation consists of outgoing currents along the southern side and ingoing currents along the northern side of the estuary. The sediments in shallow water on the southern side had higher concentrations of nutrients.Resuspension resulted in large differences between gross sedimentation and net sedimentation, especially in shallow water. Gross sedimentation of total-N in shallow water was 819 × 103 kg y–1 compared to a net sedimentation of 19 × 103 kg y–1. The shallow water areas in the estuary (10% of the area), had a net sedimentation of total-N which was less than 1% of the supply.Wave-induced resuspension only occurs in exposed parts of the deep water area, when wind velocities exceed 10 m s–1. The concentration of nutrients in the sediments was found to increase with distance from the river (the source) and with increasing depth, as a result of resuspension near the river mouth in the inner part of the estuary. In sheltered parts of the estuary there was no wave-induced resuspension and the net sedimentation equals gross sedimentation. The rate of sedimentation in deep water areas was 12.2 g m–2y–1 for total-N and 2.1 gm–2y–1 for total-P.  相似文献

Plant cell cultures of Peganum harmala converted geranyl acetate to geraniol. Although the reaction started immediately after feeding, there was disappearance of both product and substrate. Geranyl acetate at 100 mg l–1 when fed to 100 ml Peganum harmala suspensions (16% packed cell volume) was completely used within 24 h without accumulation of any product. Similarly, linalyl acetate and its biotransformation products, linalool and -terpineol, disappeared. Controlled-release polymer discs made from poly-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and containing concentrations of geranyl acetate or linalyl acetate produced greatly extended concentrations of these substrates and their biotransformation products (from about 1 day to over 12 days). The concentrations of substrates remained at around 5 mg l–1throughout the experiments, while the concentrations of biotransformation products increased from 10 mg l–1to 55.5 mg l–1 for geraniol, from 5 mg l–1 to 14 mg l–1 for linalool, and 5 mg l–1 to 12 mg l–1 for -terpineol compared to the control value.
