Any biocontrol agent used against stored grain insects will have to interact with insecticides used as grain protectants due to their heavy use especially in tropical areas. Therefore, the interaction between the pyrethroid insecticides bifenthrin and deltamethrin and Acarophenax lacunatus (Cross & Krantz) (Prostigmata: Acarophenacidae), an egg parasite of the stored cereal pest Rhyzopertha dominica(F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), was assessed in a range of mite densities and insecticide doses for each compound. Despite the mite species presence on all insecticide doses, the lowest instantaneous rate of increase of A.lacunatus was recorded with the highest doses of insecticides. The presence of the biological control agent at all doses of both insecticides suggests its tolerance to these compounds. A. lacunatusshowed higher parasitism rate with bifenthrin than with deltamethrin indicating a higher selectivity of the first compound to the biocontrol agent. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Possible changes in biological characteristics of Trichogramma pretiosum (Riley) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) were monitored during 23 generations reared on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to determine quality control parameters in rearing procedures of this parasitoid. Parasitism rates (percent of eggs parasitized) of T. pretiosum varied from 10 to 76%, with lower values for the first four generations. From the 17th generation, the variability in the parasitism rate was lower. Viability (percent adult emergence rate) of T. pretiosum in eggs of A. kuehniella varied from 22 to 100%, again with lower values in earlier generations. Adult longevity of T. pretiosum varied from 5.3 to 15.9 days, and showed a reduced longevity with increasing number of generations. Sex ratio of the offspring of this parasitoid was not affected by the timing of parasitism on eggs of A. kuehniella.  相似文献

Miconia calvescens DC. (Melastomataceae) is an invasive tree considered one of the greatest threats to natural ecosystems of Hawaii and other Pacific islands. The potential for using the defoliator Antiblemma leucocyma (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) as a biological control agent of M. calvescens was evaluated in the native habitat of the insect in Brazil. Impact assessment in the field showed that 37.2% of leaves presented damage by A. leucocyma, and among damaged leaves, 1.5-51.9% of the leaf area (16.3% on average) was affected. Damage was found in young to fully expanded leaves (28-915 cm2 in area). Individual A. leucocyma developing as third through sixth instars in the laboratory consumed an average of 1348 cm2 of M. calvescens leaf material in about 11 days. Populations of A. leucocyma in the field were heavily impacted (up to 83% parasitism) by a braconid parasitoid. Observations in the field and single- and two-host choice tests in the laboratory indicated that A. leucocyma has a narrow host range restricted to M. calvescens. Usefulness of this herbivore for biological control in Hawaii appears low, however, because of its probable susceptibility to generalist parasitoids.  相似文献

Laricobius rubidus LeConte, native to eastern North America whose primary host is Pineus strobi Hartig, has been observed in association with Adelges tsugae, an exotic and lethal pest of hemlock trees in eastern North America. Pineus strobi and A. tsugae were used to evaluate host preference and suitability of this predatory beetle to determine in part its suitability as a potential biological control agent of A. tsugae. In a paired-choice oviposition test, L. rubidus preferred to oviposit in P. strobi ovisacs over those of A. tsugae. However, in the no-choice oviposition test, there was no significant difference in the mean number of eggs laid by L. rubidus females in P. strobi or A. tsugae ovisacs. There were no significant differences in larval developmental time or survivorship for L. rubidus reared on a diet of either P. strobi or A. tsugae. Laricobius rubidus completed development to the adult stage on A. tsugae indicating that it is a suitable host and therefore has the potential to contribute to biological control of A. tsugae in the eastern United States. The introduction of a congener, Laricobius nigrinus to eastern North America may result in competition with L. rubidus on A. tsugae, but the inability of L. nigrinus to complete development on P. strobi suggests that the two congeners will not compete on the primary host of L. rubidus.  相似文献

The parasitic mite Acarophenax lacunatus (Cross & Krantz) is a potentially important biocontrol agent of stored grain insect pests, but its presence in insect mass rearing is undesirable. This study was carried out to evaluate the susceptibility of A. lacunatus to sulfur. The experimental units were petri dishes containing 30 g of whole wheat grains infested with 30 adults of Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). The treatments consisted of pulverizing the wheat grains with sulfur, at 0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 mg a.i./g, in five replicates. Three inoculations of A. lacunatus were carried out in each petri dish at five, ten and fifteen days after infestation with R. dominica. The petri dishes were stored for 60 days at 30 +/- 1 degree Celsius, 60 +/- 5% R.H. and 24h scotophase. The parasitic mite was susceptible to all sulfur doses used in the test. The number of eggs of R. dominica parasitized by A. lacunatus showed a decreasing trend with the increase in doses of sulfur, as did the number of physogastric females of the mite. The mite showed a negative correlation of their instantaneous rate of increase with sulfur dose. No mites developed at sulfur doses higher than 0.3 mg a.i./g. The susceptibility of A. lacunatus to sulfur is an important aspect to consider in the control of this parasitic mite in colonies of R. dominica. In addition, this control method has low cost and is easy to use.  相似文献

The sunn pest are a group of insect representing several genera of the shield bug (Scutelleridae) and stink bug (Pentatomidae) families, with the species Eurygaster integriceps being the most economically important. The sunn pest is a major pest of wheat and barley in central and western Asia and it accounts for annual losses of 20-30% for barley and up to 100% for wheat. In the recent decades problems have intensified largely due to change in farming practices. Thus this pest threatens food security and reduces the stability of traditionally wheat-based agricultural systems. In order to control pest, the major organophosphorus insecticide used is fenitrothion. So, the aim of the current study was to determine toxicity of fenitrothion against summer population of adult sunn pest. Insecticide toxicity was measured using a topical bioassay. To do so, the toxin was dissolved in acetone and six concentrations of toxin including 25, 50, 100, 150, 175 and 200 ppm were prepared. Insects were treated on the pronotum with one micro litre aliquots of insecticide in acetone (for treatments) or acetone alone (for control). The dose-mortality relationship was assessed from above mentioned doses with 30 insects treated per dose. After treatment, insects were maintained at laboratory conditions and mortality was recorded after 48 hours. Results were corrected for control mortality with Abbott's formula and then analyzed and toxicity determined. The obtained results showed that LD10, LD50, and LD90 were 34.7, 90.43, and 235.5, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract  Neopolycystus sp. is the only primary egg parasitoid associated with the pest beetle Paropsis atomaria in subtropical eucalypt plantations, but its impact on its host populations is unknown. The simplified ecosystem represented by the plantation habitat, lack of interspecific competition for host and parasitoid, and the multivoltinism of the host population makes this an ideal system for quantifying the direct and indirect effects of egg parasitism, and hence, effects on host population dynamics. Within-, between- and overall-egg-batch parasitism rates were determined at three field sites over two field seasons, and up to seven host generations. The effect of exposure time (egg batch age), host density proximity to native forest and water sources on egg parasitism rates was also tested. Neopolycystus sp. exerts a significant influence on P. atomaria populations in Eucalyptus cloeziana. plantations in south-eastern Queensland, causing the direct (13%) and indirect (15%) mortality of almost one-third of all eggs in the field. Across seasons and generations, 45% of egg batches were parasitised, with a within-batch parasitism rate of around 30%. Between-batch parasitism increased up to 5–6 days after oviposition in the field, although within-batch parasitism rates generally did not. However, there were few apparent patterns to egg parasitism, with rates often varying significantly between sites and seasons.  相似文献

Due to increased field occurrence of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) on various crops including soybean, persimmon and apple in recent years in Korea, demand for insecticide applications to control the stink bug has increased. Acute toxicity of eight pesticides on Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a major egg parasitoid of R. pedestris, was compared in the laboratory. Fenitrothion, spinosad, cyfluthrin, etofenprox and carbosulfan caused 100% mortality of O. nezarae within 24 hours by topical application or exposure to residue. Fenitrothion was also highly toxic to the parasitoid when ingested orally. In a previous study, release of refrigerated inviable eggs of R. pedestris was found to increase field parasitism; therefore, we evaluated the sublethal effect of fenitrothion when O. nezarae parasitised refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs. Although parasitism rates on both kinds of eggs significantly decreased when O. nezarae were provided with host eggs sprayed with fenitrothion, no difference in parasitism rate, adult emergence, sex ratio, development time and longevity of O. nezarae was found between the refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs when the insecticide was treated either before or after oviposition. There was no significant sublethal effect when parasitised host eggs were treated with the insecticide. From these results, all the insecticides tested showed high, acute toxicity against O. nezarae with relatively lower sublethal effects. Refrigeration of host eggs did not affect the susceptibility of O. nezarae to insecticides.  相似文献

Two stick-like acridids (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae) from Argentina, Anchocoema bidentata Mello-Leitao and Astroma saltense Mello-Leitao, were evaluated as potential biological control agents of creosote bush (Larrea tridentata (DC.) Coville) in the southwestern United States. Their biology, behavior and geographic distribution of those species were studied. The host plant ranges for both insects were established through nymph feeding preference and development tests in the laboratory and in the field. A total of 33 species of plants belonging to 13 families were tested. Anchocoema bidentata and A. saltense are mimetic species, having as many as three generations a year, and exhibit strong sexual dimorphism; females are larger and less mobile than males. In both species, females laid egg masses in the soil. First instars appeared in the field at the end of the spring, the second generation at mid-summer, and a third at the end of the summer. Adults of A. bidentata and A. saltense appeared in the field at the beginning of the spring. The laboratory multiple-choice feeding test showed that A. bidentata preferred Larrea divaricata Cav., whereas A. saltense preferred L. divaricata and L. cuneifolia Cav. In the nymph development test (no choice), A. bidentata was able to complete its development only on L. divaricata and L. cuneifolia, while Astroma saltense completed its development on six plant species: L divaricata, L. cuneifolia, Bulnesia retama (Gillies ex Hooker et Arnott), B. schickendantzi Hieron (all Zygophyllaceae), Zuccagnia punctata Cav., and Prosopis torquata (Cav. Ap. Lag.) (both Fabaseae). We concluded that A. bidentata could be a biocontrol agent for L. tridentata because the first instar can complete its development only on Larrea spp. Regarding A. saltense, this species showed a wide host range and should not be considered as a biological control agent of L. tridentata.  相似文献

The efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae strain Ma43 and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus strain Pfr12 (both Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) against adults of Empoasca decipiens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) and potential side effects on the egg parasitoid Anagrus atomus (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), were investigated in greenhouse cage and laboratory experiments. Treating leafhopper-infested faba bean plants at a dose rate of 1×107 conidia mL-1 resulted in up to 97% mortality 7 days after application and a 100% infection rate. Experiments on the residual effects revealed a significant decrease in adult E. decipiens mortality with increasing time from application to insect release. The decrease in mortality over time corresponded well with data from conidia germination tests. The germination of conidia on agar medium after washing them from the surafce of sprayed plants declined significantly from 95 and 96% immediately after application for M. anisopliae Ma43 and P. fumosoroseus Pfr12, respectively, to 29 and 27% 5 days later. Experiments on potential side effects of the entomopathogenic fungi on A. atomus showed that the tested isolates had no influence on adult emergence and longevity; however, the rates of parasitism were significantly reduced by the fungal treatments. The latter might be due to either density effects and/or could indicate that A. atomus avoids fungal-treated plants. However, the parasitoid is substantially less susceptible to the fungal strains tested than the host itself.  相似文献

The overuse of insecticides to control vector insects such as Diaphorina citri Kuwayama in citrus groves has altered the population dynamics of pest mites. Among phytophagous mites, population outbreaks of citrus leprosis mite, Brevipalpus yothersi Baker, have been increasingly intense and frequent in Brazilian citrus groves. Despite the great importance of the B. yothersi mite for citrus production, the lethal and sublethal effects of insecticides on this mite have not yet been studied. Therefore, in this study, the effects of insecticides commonly used for D. citri control on B. yothersi mortality, reproduction, and instantaneous growth rate were assessed. For this, two experiments were carried out, one under controlled conditions and another in a greenhouse. The insecticides tested were beta-cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, pyriproxyfen, and thiamethoxam at 0 (control), 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and twofold the recommended insecticide concentration for D. citri control. The pyriproxyfen insecticide provided high mortality of B. yothersi even at low concentrations. Furthermore, this insecticide negatively interfered with the reproduction of this mite. Beta-cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, and thiamethoxam, in the tested concentrations, showed low impact on citrus leprosis mite. Regarding the reproduction of the mite, no significant increase in fecundity was observed on B. yothersi females exposed to insecticide residues, regardless of the concentration tested. Therefore, the application of these insecticides in the management of pest insects is unlikely to promote an increase in the citrus leprosis mite population.

The influence of deltamethrin on the reproduction of Trichogramma cordubensis, a thelytokous egg parasitoid, was investigated by studying egg maturation and daily fecundity of insecticide treated wasps and offspring emergence rates. The insecticide was applied to the parasitoids at the prepupal stage within its host eggs (Ephestia kuehniella). The total number of parasitized eggs per female during the first 7 days was not significantly influenced by the tested concentrations of deltamethrin. Prevalence of parasitism during this period had a similar pattern between deltamethrin treatments and the control. In addition, the mean number of mature eggs observed per female per day was significantly correlated to mean daily fecundity, regardless of the treatments. Offspring emergence was significantly influenced by the insecticide treatments experienced on their progenitors, decreasing significantly at 48 and 72 h for the highest tested concentration of deltamethrin (23.6 mg [a.i.]/L). Despite that, deltamethrin had no adverse effects on the reproduction of treated wasps, particularly when was applied at the concentration recommended by the manufacturer (12.5 mg [a.i.]/L).  相似文献

Abstract The first instances of egg parasitism of Chrysophtharta agricola , a pest of eucalypt plantations, are recorded. Enoggera nassaui was found parasitising C. agricola egg batches in Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales and Victoria: this is the first record of this parasitoid species from Victoria. One instance of Neopolycystus sp. parasitising C. agricola eggs in Victoria was also recorded. Parasitism of egg batches by E. nassaui ranged from 0 to 55% between five geographical populations collected in mainland Australia ( n  = 45), and from 0 to 2% between two populations collected in Tasmania ( n  = 300). For mainland sites at which parasitism was recorded, parasitism rates within sites differed significantly from either population in Tasmania. Reciprocal exposure experiments using one Tasmanian (Florentine Valley) and one parasitised mainland (Picadilly Circus, ACT) population were conducted in the laboratory to examine whether these different parasitism rates were attributable to egg or parasitoid origin. Parasitoids from the ACT parasitised C. agricola eggs of both origins more successfully than parasitoids from Tasmania, with up to 65% wasp emergence compared with 33% from Tasmania. Parasitoid origin significantly affected the number of wasps that emerged from exposed batches, but not the total loss from parasitism.  相似文献

Apophua simplicipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a common parasitoid of the oblique banded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in organically managed apple orchards in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. The biological characteristics of a laboratory colony of A. simplicipes were studied. When held at 15 and 25°C and provided with honey water, individual females survived an average of 60.6±6.1 and 29.8±4.7 days, oviposited 196.7±50.7 and 326.6±51.3 eggs and parasitized a total of 163.4±40.4 and 229.4±35.8 hosts, respectively. Females oviposited into first through fourth instar oblique banded leafrollers, with significantly more parasitism occurring in the first two instars compared to the third and fourth instars. No parasitoid larvae survived past the first larval stage in parasitized fourth instar hosts. Apophua simplicipes did not parasitize larvae of three-lined leafroller, Pandemis limitata (Robinson) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) which is sympatric with oblique banded leafrollers in orchards in the southern interior of British Columbia. Female predation and host feeding from wounds on early instars of both leafroller species was observed under laboratory conditions. In addition, early instar hosts exited diet feeding sites in response to the probing activity of the ovipositing wasps. A similar escape reaction in the orchard may cause a leafroller larva to move away from its feeding site, making it more vulnerable to predation or movement off the tree. Apophua simplicipes larvae emerged from fifth and sixth instar hosts. Parasitized oblique banded leafroller hosts consumed significantly less meridic diet than unparasitized female larvae from fifth instar through to parasitoid emergence or leafroller pupation. Our laboratory results suggest that A. simplicipes may reduce field populations of oblique banded leafroller and decrease pest feeding damage.  相似文献

The European biotype of the parasitoid Microctonus aethiopoides Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is being considered for release against Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in New Zealand. Host specificity was evaluated in the laboratory using both endemic and introduced weed biological control curculionid species, with 12 no-choice and three choice experiments carried out comparing the S. lepidus and test weevils. Two further no-choice tests used the Moroccan M. aethiopoides biotype to compare attack rate between European and Moroccan M. aethiopoides, the latter released in 1982 to control the lucerne pest S. discoideus. Across all experiments, total parasitism of S. lepidus was 69% compared with 15% for the test weevils. European M. aethiopoides was able to develop in the native weevils Irenimus aequalis, Nicaeana cervina, Catoptes cuspidatus, Protolobus porculus and Steriphus variabilis with parasitism rates of 13, 28, 2, 7 and 8%, respectively. These levels were significantly less than those in the corresponding S. lepidus control. Total parasitism of I. aequalis and C. cuspidatus increased significantly in the presence of S. lepidus than recorded under no-choice conditions. The presence of European M. aethiopoides caused minor, if any, test weevil mortality prior to the onset of prepupal emergence and there was no significant reproductive suppression in parasitoid-exposed test weevils. Parasitism of the introduced weed control agent R. conicus by European M. aethiopoides was significantly lower (1.1%) compared to the Moroccan biotype (47.5%). Based on these and other experiments, should the European M. aethiopoides be released as a biological control agent of S. lepidus, its ecological impacts are likely to be less severe than those already exhibited by the Moroccan M. aethiopoides.  相似文献

Effects of fenitrothion and deltamethrin, the most commonly used insecticides in Iran for controlling Eurygaster integriceps Puton (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae), in wheat and barley were assessed on adults and preimaginal stages of egg parasitoid Trissolcus grandis Thompson (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Adult parasitoids exposed to field recommended concentrations of the insecticides suffered 100% mortality within 24 h. LC50 values of fenitrothion and deltamethrin for T. grandis were 8.1 and 3.9 microg (AI) /ml, respectively. Both insecticides and the preimaginal stage of exposure had a significant influence on the level of adult emergence from host eggs treated with field recommended rates. Fenitrothion and deltamethrin reduced the emergence rates by 18 and 34.4%, respectively, compared with the control. However, neither insecticide significantly affected the longevity or reproductive capacity of emerged females, or the sex ratio of their progeny. This study revealed that application of these insecticides should be avoided in early season to conserve natural or released populations of T. grandis. Both insecticides seemed to be detrimental to the parasitoid and need to be applied cautiously through season.  相似文献

Most species of sea hares (Opisthobranchia: Anaspidea) sequester secondary metabolites from their algal diets in their digestive glands. Aplysia Juliana Quoy and Gaimard, 1832, a sea hare that feeds on Ulva spp. and Enteromorpha spp., algae with few or no secondary metabolites, were compared with the sympatric sea hares A. oculifera Adams and Reeve, 1850, A. kurodai (Baba, 1937), and Dolabella auricularia (Solander, 1786), all of which eat chemically rich algae, to see if sequestered secondary metabolites afford protection to sea hares from potential predators. Organic extracts of whole A. Juliana stimulated, and organic extracts of whole D. auricularia deterred feeding by crabs. However, tests with organic extracts of individual body parts indicated that this pattern was due almost exclusively to unpalatability of extracts of D. auricularia digestive glands. Tests with pieces of tissue from the exterior of the animals, or with extracts of such tissues, showed no consistent patterns indicating that A. Juliana were more palatable than other sea hares. Sea hare egg masses do not appear to contain diet-derived secondary metabolites. However, pieces of egg masses of A. Juliana and D. auricularia were universally rejected by crabs and reef fish, and extracts of A. Juliana egg masses deterred feeding by some reef fish. Finally, both opaline secretion of A. Juliana and ink of A. kurodai, but not ink of D. auricularia, none of which appear to contain diet-derived secondary metabolites, deterred feeding by crabs. Opaline secretion from A. Juliana, but not ink from A. kurodai, induced avoidance behavior in crabs. Although sequestered secondary metabolites clearly can affect the palatability of the digestive gland, there is little evidence that they affect the palatibility of the ink, opaline secretion, eggs, or skin, suggesting that sequestered secondary metabolites may not play a key role in anti-predator defense of sea hares.  相似文献

Responses to mustard seed meal of two parasitic beetles, Aleochara bipustulata and A. bilineata, were assessed by measuring levels of parasitism of Delia radicum puparia and of root damage to oilseed rape, and by pitfall trapping of the beetles. Levels of parasitism and trap catches of A. bipustulata were higher in meal-treated plots than in untreated control plots; however, there were no significant effects on A. bilineata, numbers of D. radicum in roots or on levels of root damage. Olfactometry confirmed the absence of response by A. bilineata and showed that A. bipustulata is attracted to volatiles released by dry or wet mustard seed meal. From GC-MS, the most abundant volatiles from mustard seed meal were limonene and structurally-similar compounds. These results are discussed with respect to mechanism of attraction, the host finding cues used by the major parasitoids of D. radicum, and the value of mustard seed meal for enhancing biological control.  相似文献

Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a serious invasive pest of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) in North America from China. The egg parasitoid Oobius agrili Zhang and Huang (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was introduced from China as a biological control agent for this pest in Michigan and throughout the infested area of the United States. A critical component of any biological control program is post-release monitoring and evaluation; however, because of the small size and cryptic nature of O. agrili, evaluation of its impact is difficult. We compared two methods for measuring parasitism of emerald ash borer eggs: (1) timed visual searches of bark on standing ash trees and (2) bark collection, sifting, and sorting. Both methods were carried out in paired parasitoid-release and control plots, the visual search method over a six-year period (2008–2013) and the more recently developed bark-collection and sifting method for 2 years (2012–2013). The visual search method found parasitism in release plots remained low (0.7–4.2%) in samples taken from 2008 to 2012 and reached 10.6% in 2013. In comparison, the bark-sifting method found that rates of egg parasitism were considerably higher in release plots, 21.8% and 18.9% for samples taken in 2012 and 2013, respectively. These findings indicate that the population-level impact of O. agrili is increasing and may be an important source of mortality for EAB populations. We recommend the bark-collection and sifting method as the more effective method to recover parasitoids and estimate parasitism rates of O. agrili.  相似文献
