Fungal biodiversity in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems increases with the availability of water and energy, but cannot now be precisely described because of problems with identification and questions us to what organisms are truly indigenous. Yeasts probably predominate on continental Antarctica, while other microfungi usually do so in maritime and sub-Antarctica. Lists of nematophagous species and of microfungal species reported from maritime and sub-Antarctica are given. The ecological roles of these fungi are worthy of further research. The ability of common airspora and pathogens to survive and colonize should be investigated.  相似文献

We describe the development and use of the first mathematical computer model for a polar lake. This dynamic model graphically illustrates seasonal and annual predictions of the changes in the biomass of plankton and attached primary producers, decomposers and consumers, changes in the quantities of potential nutrients and organic matter. The model consists of 100 submodels of which 79 are algebraic equations and 21 are differential equations. In this paper, the first documentation of egg-guarding behaviour in an artedidraconid species, Pogonophryne scotti, through in situ photographic imagery obtained during video transects is provided. The male specimen was observed closely guarding a well-defined multi-layered egg mass deposited on the sea floor at 240 m on the southern South Orkney Islands shelf in the northern Weddell Sea. Egg-guarding parental care is present in species that are distributed among all of the major lineages of Antarctic notothenioids; however, lack of information on egg-deposition behaviours in Bovichtidae and Pseudaphritis prevents assessment of whether parental care originated prior to the origin of the Antarctic notothenioid radiation.  相似文献

Abstract Properties of lipases excreted by 4 psychrotropic Moraxella strains from antarctic sea water have investigated. Despite an optimal cell generation time at 25°C, maximal lipase excretion essentially occurs at low temperatures. These enzymes are characterized by a shift of the apparent optimal activity towards low temperatures, by a reduction of the activation energy value and by a decrease in heat stability. These lipases are associated with lipopolysaccharides, forming high molecular weight complexes. One of the selected strain is able to express the antibiotic resistances carried by RP4, at both 4 and 25°C.  相似文献

Evidence‐based assessments are increasingly recognized as the best‐practice approach to determine appropriate conservation interventions, but such assessments of the impact of human disturbance on wildlife are rare. Human disturbance comprises anthropogenic activities that are typically non‐lethal, but may cause short‐ and/or longer‐term stress and fitness responses in wildlife. Expanding human activity in the Antarctic region is of particular concern because it increases the scope and potential for increased human disturbance to wildlife in a region that is often thought of as relatively untouched by anthropogenic influences. Here, we use a meta‐analytical approach to synthesise research on human disturbance to wildlife over the last three decades in the Antarctic and sub‐Antarctic region. We combine data from 62 studies across 21 species on the behavioural, physiological and population responses of wildlife to pedestrian, vehicle and research disturbances. The overall effect size indicated a small, albeit statistically significant negative effect of disturbance (?0.39; 95% CI: ?0.60 to ?0.18). Negative effects were found for both physiological and population responses, but no evidence was found for a significant impact on wildlife behavioural responses. Negative effects were found across pedestrian, vehicle and research disturbances. Significant and high among‐study heterogeneity was found in both disturbance and response sub‐groups. Among species, it remains unclear to what extent different forms of disturbance translate into negative population responses. Most current guidelines to limit wildlife disturbance impacts in Antarctica recommend that approaches be tailored to animal behavioural cues, but our work demonstrates that behavioural changes do not necessarily reflect more cryptic, and more deleterious impacts, such as changes in physiology. In consequence, we recommend that pedestrian approach guidelines in the Antarctic region be revisited. Due to the high heterogeneity in effects, management guidelines for different sites and species will need to be developed on a case‐by‐case basis, ideally in conjunction with carefully designed experiments. Guidelines to reduce the impact of research activities per se require development to reduce the potential impacts of conducting research. We identify research questions that, if answered, will further improve the evidence base for guidelines to manage human disturbance in Antarctica.  相似文献

Deschampsia antarctica Desv. is the only gramineae capable of colonizing the Antarctic due to the region’s extreme climate and soil environment. In the present research, bacteria colonizing the rhizospheric soil of D. antarctica were isolated and characterized. The soil studies showed that D. antarctica possesses a wide spectrum of psychrotolerant bacteria with extensive and varied antibiotic resistance, as well as heavy metal tolerance. The bacterial strains isolated from the rhizosphere of D. antarctica also produced a diverse pattern of enzymes. Based on the strain identification with partial characterization of the 16S rRNA gene, the majority of the isolates correspond to different Pseudomonas species, and species of the genus Flavobacterium sp. and Arthrobacter sp. The isolated strains collected from this research constitute a unique collection for future, more detailed taxonomic analysis and physiological characterization, contributing to the search for potential biotechnological uses. These findings and others have great potential for developing new biotechnological products from Antarctic microorganisms.  相似文献

During the MICROMAT project, the fungal diversity of microbial mats growing in the benthic environment of Antarctic lakes was accessed for the discovery of novel antibiotics and anticancers. In all, 160 filamentous fungi belonging to fifteen different genera and 171 yeasts were isolated from 11 lakes, classified and cultivated in different media and at different temperatures. Filamentous fungi were then screened to discover novel antimicrobial and cytotoxic compounds. A total of 1422 extracts were prepared by solid phase extraction of the culture broths or by biomass solvent extraction. 47 (29%) filamentous fungi showed antimicrobial activity; most of them inhibited the growth of gram-positive Staphyloccus aureus (14%), gram-negative E. coli (10%), and of yeasts Candida albicans (11%) and Cryptococcus neoformans (8%). Less activity was detected against representatives of enterobacteria and filamentous fungi. The most productive in terms of bioactivities were cold-tolerant cosmopolitan hyphomycetes such as Penicillium, Aspergillus, Beauveria and Cladosporium. Two bioactive bis-anthraquinones (rugulosin and skyrin) were identified by LC–MS as the main products in a strain of Penicillium chrysogenum isolated from a saline lake in the Vestfold Hills. LC–MS fractionation of extracts from two diverse species of Aspergillus, that exhibited relatively potent antimicrobial activities, evidenced a chemical novelty that was further investigated. To our knowledge, this is the first report of new antibiotics produced by fungi from benthic microbial mats from Antarctic lakes. It can be concluded that these microbial assemblages represent an extremely rich source for the isolation of new strains producing novel bioactive metabolites with the potential to be developed as drugs.  相似文献

The viable counts of portions of the microbial communities of the water column of Lake Bonney and associated glacial melt-streams in South Victorialand, Antarctica, were monitored at regular intervals during two consecutive austral summers. Antarctic surface oceans are well-studied during summer when irradiance levels are high, sea ice is melting and primary productivity is at a maximum. Coincident with this timing, the bacterioplankton respond with significant increases in secondary productivity. Little is known about bacterioplankton in winter when darkness and sea-ice cover inhibit photoautotrophic primary production. We report here an environmental genomic and small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) analysis of winter and summer Antarctic Peninsula coastal seawater bacterioplankton. Intense inter-seasonal differences were reflected through shifts in community composition and functional capacities encoded in winter and summer environmental genomes with significantly higher phylogenetic and functional diversity in winter. In general, inferred metabolisms of summer bacterioplankton were characterized by chemoheterotrophy, photoheterotrophy and aerobic anoxygenic photosynthesis while the winter community included the capacity for bacterial and archaeal chemolithoautotrophy. Chemolithoautotrophic pathways were dominant in winter and were similar to those recently reported in global ‘dark ocean'' mesopelagic waters. If chemolithoautotrophy is widespread in the Southern Ocean in winter, this process may be a previously unaccounted carbon sink and may help account for the unexplained anomalies in surface inorganic nitrogen content.  相似文献

Microfungi from Antarctica were grown at 10 °C, 21 °C, 28 °C and 37 °C on a series of plates each containing a single carbon source and designed to indicate the secretion of particular hydrolytic enzymes. Colony radius and hydrolytic activity were measured and a relative activity index (RA) established. In general, effective hydrolysis occurred at mesophilic temperatures. Some enzymes, especially of Trichoderma spp. and Penicillium spp. showed maximum activity at 10 °C, indicating adaptation to the colder temperatures of the antarctic environment.  相似文献

In the Antarctic Ocean salt concentration differs from the bottom to the surface owing to the seasonal forming and melting of sea ice. Antarctic teleosts present different lifestyle from benthic to pelagic. While benthic animals face a constant seawater salinity, benthic–pelagic animals have to face different salt concentration. Branchial morphology and ion–water transport proteins were compared in animals with different lifestyle. The ultrastructure of the gills was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Na+/K+/ATPase, Na+/K+/Cl cotransport protein NKCC1 and Aquaporin 3 (AQP3), were investigated by immunohistochemistry. The immunoreactivity for the ion transporter proteins were more intense in the active benthic–pelagic animals and in the icefishes than in the sluggish benthic ones. Conversely, AQP immunoreactivity was stronger in the animals with sedentary lifestyles. The SEM showed the secondary lamellae in the benthic–pelagic animals more densely packed with the exception of the haemoglobin free teleosts.  相似文献

Open-ocean environments provide few obvious barriers to the dispersal of marine organisms. Major currents and/or environmental gradients potentially impede gene flow. One system hypothesized to form an open-ocean dispersal barrier is the Antarctic Polar Front, an area characterized by marked temperature change, deep water, and the high-flow Antarctic Circumpolar current. Despite these potential isolating factors, several invertebrate species occur in both regions, including the broadcast-spawning nemertean worm Parborlasia corrugatus. To empirically test for the presence of an open-ocean dispersal barrier, we sampled P. corrugatus and other nemerteans from southern South America, Antarctica, and the sub-Antarctic islands. Diversity was assessed by analyzing mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence data with Bayesian inference and tcs haplotype network analysis. Appropriate neutrality tests were also employed. Although our results indicate a single well-mixed lineage in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic, no evidence for recent gene flow was detected between this population and South American P. corrugatus. Thus, even though P. corrugatus can disperse over large geographical distances, physical oceanographic barriers (i.e. Antarctic Polar Front and Antarctic Circumpolar Current) between continents have likely restricted dispersal over evolutionary time. Genetic distances and haplotype network analysis between South American and Antarctic/sub-Antarctic P. corrugatus suggest that these two populations are possibly two cryptic species.  相似文献

The growth rates of Antarctic fur seal ( Arctocephalus gazella ) pups estimated from weighing cross-sections of the population were compared with measured/ inferred changes in the availability of their main prey species, Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba ) from 1989 to 2000. There was no relationship between growth rate and mass at weaning and there were counter-intuitive indications of higher growth rates in years of low krill availability. Biases reflecting changes in the component of the population available for sampling appear to invalidate the widely held assumption that interannual differences in growth rate can reliably be derived from differences in the slope of a linear relationship based on cross-sectional population samples. A new index was developed, based on the deviation of pup mass at age in each year compared to the multiyear mean, that was not dependent on assumptions of linearity. The indices of growth deviates produced a more logical relationship with other indices of pup development and related more appropriately to variations in prey availability. The potential impact of methodological biases on the interpretation of growth rate suggests that comparisons of growth rates should not rely on assumptions regarding the underlying growth pattern.  相似文献

It has been known for some time that yolk deposition and final ovarian maturation were prolonged processes for many Antarctic fish. The adolescent phase in three species of channichthyid has been studied, based on an extensive series of samples over five seasons. Samples were obtained during a series of abundance estimation surveys on the shelf around South Georgia. Fish were measured, and sex and maturity stage determined from macroscopic examination of the gonads. It was found that for female Champsocephalus gunnari and Pseudochaenichthys georgianus the adolescent phase lasts <1 year but in Chaenocephalus aceratus it lasts for nearly 4 years.  相似文献

Ovarian maturation in Notothenia coriiceps is known to include a period during which yolk deposition begins to take place. This 'adolescent' phase was thought originally to last for about 1 year. The results from a 2–year study at Signy Island indicate that this adolescent phase lasts for about 4 years. There is also some evidence to indicate that not all sexually mature fish spawn each season. Two reproductive strategies are considered, one where adverse conditions are accompanied by a failure to spawn and an alternative where fecundity is controlled by the number of small oocytes which ripen.  相似文献
