Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr were exposed to aluminium under both steady state and non-steady state chemical conditions in alkaline water. Under alkaline (pH 9.5) steady state conditions, approximately 350 microg Al l(-1) (predominantly aluminate, Al(OH)(4)(-)) had no acute toxic effect on the salmon. The fish, however, showed a physiological response after 3 weeks of exposure ( approximately 300% increase in blood glucose concentration, about 30% increase in blood haematocrit, and about 15% decrease in plasma Cl(-) concentration). No increase in toxicity was evident under non-steady state conditions, i.e. lowering Al solubility as pH was lowered from 9.5 to 7.5. The results indicate that the toxicity of the aluminate ion (Al(OH)(4)(-)) is low, and particularly lower than the corresponding toxicity of cationic Al hydroxides. The effects observed in fish exposed to Al-rich water at pH 9.5 were counteracted as Al solubility was decreased by lowering pH to 7.5. This is contrary to previous observations where Al solubility has been lowered by increasing pH from 5.0 to 6.5. 相似文献

The Sun is the most abundant source of optical radiation for the child eye. New hand-held visible lasers are a threat to the child eye. Some scientific data suggest that near infrared radiation may cause cumulative damage in the ocular lens. The child eye usually is exposed to ambient solar radiation, gazing at the horizon. Ambient Sun ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure to the child is complex due to atmospheric scattering and strong dependence on background reflection. Solar exposure causes biological damage, only by photochemical mechanisms. UVR exposure to a child eye is mainly a threat to the anterior segment of the eye, but also age dependently to the retina. Above threshold exposure to UVR, for short delay onset of damage, causes a toxic reaction on the surface of the eye, snow blindness, and cataract. Sub-threshold daily exposure to UVR over decades is associated with several ocular surface pathologies and eye lid cancer. Visible radiation is a threat to the retina. A single above threshold exposure, for short delay onset of damage to the retina causes immediate photochemical Type II retinal damage, Sun blindness. A single exposure of the retina to a very high intensity laser beam may cause thermal or thermo-mechanical damage in the retina. In environments with high irradiance of optical radiation, the child eye should be protected. Legislation and public information is required for avoidance of damage from high intensity laser systems. More research is urgently needed to exclude the potential hazard of near infrared radiation. 相似文献

The production of biodiesel by transesterification employing acid or base catalyst has been industrially accepted for its high conversion and reaction rates. Downstream processing costs and environmental problems associated with biodiesel production and byproducts recovery have led to the search for alternative production methods. Recently, enzymatic transesterification involving lipases has attracted attention for biodiesel production as it produces high purity product and enables easy separation from the byproduct, glycerol. The use of immobilized lipases and immobilized whole cells may lower the overall cost, while presenting less downstream processing problems, to biodiesel production. The present review gives an overview on biodiesel production technology and analyzes the factors/methods of enzymatic approach reported in the literature and also suggests suitable method on the basis of evidence for industrial production of biodiesel. 相似文献

Kallar grass is a highly salt-tolerant grass grown as a pioneer plant on alkaline, salt-affected soils in Pakistan. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and kallar grass were found to be in close association, which was even root-zone specific: rhizoplane and endorhizosphere were colonized by two different populations. Among theAzospirillum isolates originating from the root surface, some were of a new species, now namedA. halopraeferens. To study plant-bacterium interactions, this natural kallar grass association was chosen. The possible role of bacterial chemotaxis and oxygen tolerance are discussed. 相似文献

Planktonic members of most algal groups are known to harbor intracellular symbionts, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Among the dinoflagellates, viral and bacterial associations were recognized a quarter century ago, yet their impact on host populations remains largely unresolved. By contrast, fungal and protozoan infections of dinoflagellates are well documented and generally viewed as playing major roles in host population dynamics. Our understanding of fungal parasites is largely based on studies for freshwater diatoms and dinoflagellates, although fungal infections are known for some marine phytoplankton. In freshwater systems, fungal chytrids have been linked to mass mortalities of host organisms, suppression or retardation of phytoplankton blooms, and selective effects on species composition leading to successional changes in plankton communities. Parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Amoebophrya and the newly described Perkinsozoa, Parvilucifera infectans, are widely distributed in coastal waters of the world where they commonly infect photosynthetic and heterotrophic dinoflagellates. Recent work indicates that these parasites can have significant impacts on host physiology, behavior, and bloom dynamics. Thus, parasitism needs to be carefully considered in developing concepts about plankton dynamics and the flow of material in marine food webs. 相似文献

Cultivation of plants in northern China began at an early date. A number of domesticates were derived from native species,
and others were introduced from southeastern Asia. Many vegetable species are included in myths and stories of ancient China.
These traditional stories, as well as ancient agricultural and medicinal books, often mention cultivated members of the Cucurbitaceae.
Twelve genera and 18 species of cucurbits are currently under cultivation in China. A number of them appear to be endemic
to Indochina, while others were introduced from Western Asia and the New World. A recent trip to China and a survey of Chinese
literature indicated that many cucurbits are consumed in the immature state as vegetables, some are eaten as fruits, and various
species are used for medicine and a variety of other purposes.

antiqua cuentan de diversas especies vegetales. Estos relatos tradicionales, tanto como los viejos libros de las agricultura
y medicina, frecuentemente mencionan los miembros cultivados de las Cucurbitaceae. Hoy en día se cultivan doce géneros y dieciocho

The aim of this review is to give a general account on the oxidative microbial degradation of flavonols. Since now 50 years, various research groups have deciphered the way microorganisms aerobically deal with this important class of flavonoids. Flavonols such as rutin and quercetin are abundantly found in vegetal tissues and exudates, and it was thus patent that various microorganisms will bear the enzymatic machinery necessary to cope with these vegetal secondary metabolites. After initial studies focussed on the general metabolic capacity of various microorganisms towards flavonols, the so called rutin catabolic pathway was rapidly established in moulds. Enzymes of the path as well as substrates and products were known at the beginning of the seventies. Then during 30 years, only sporadic studies were focused on this pathway, before a new burst of interest at the beginning of the new century arose with structural, genomic and theorical studies mainly conducted towards quercetinase. This is the goal of this work to relate this 50 years journey at the crossroads of microbiology, biochemistry, genetic and chemistry. Some mention of the potential usefulness of the enzymes of the path as well as micro-organisms bearing the whole rutin catabolic pathway is also discussed. 相似文献

Although Africa harbors low species diversity compared to the neotropics or South East Asia, the African fern flora is of
interest because of its specific composition and geographic location between the neotropics and Asia. We address the question
of how the evolution of the African fern flora may have been enriched by repeated input from the neotropics and Asia. For
the purpose of this paper we consider ihree major biogeographic regions: the neotropics, Africa and Madagascar, and Asia including
Malesia and Australasia. We interpret distribution data for six clades of Polypodiaceae in a molecular phylogenetic framework.
We conclude that African fern taxa shared with or closely related to ones in the neotropics or Asia have been brought about
by ancient and recent dispersal events with or without subsequent speciation. The African fern flora is interpreted as being
composed of endemic, neotropical, and Asian elements and as being situated in a zone of overlap of typical neotropical and

We examined the morphology of the wrist (carpal region) skeleton using histological serial sections and cleared and stained forelimbs of representatives of three rodent clades: ‘Hystricomorpha’ (Caviomorpha: Ctenomys opimus, C. talarum, Cuniculus taczanowskii, Erethizon dorsatum, Galea sp., Lagostomus maximus, Spalacopus cyanus; Phiomorpha: Fukomys mechowii, Heliophobius argenteocinereus, Hystrix cristata, H. africaeaustralis; Ctenodactylids (Ctenodactylus gundi)), ‘Myomorpha’ (Arvicola amphibius, Ondatra zibethicus, Meriones unguiculatus, Myodes glareolus, Spalax sp.) and ‘Sciuromorpha’ (Eliomys quercinus, Glis glis, Marmota marmota). We describe the arrangement of the carpal bones and identify several variable traits, some of which represent convergent evolution. One element, the Os posthamatum, lies in the carpal region and has not been recorded before. We interpret this bone as a putative autapomorphy of Hystricognathi but not of ‘Hystricomorpha’. 相似文献

The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level in blood is a measure of long-term glycemic status in patients with diabetes mellitus. Current clinical methods for determination of the HbA1c level include electrophoresis/electroendosmosis, ion exchange chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, boronate affinity chromatography, immunoassay, and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectroscopy in addition to fluorometry and colorimetry. These methods have certain drawbacks such as being complex, time-consuming, and requiring expensive apparatus and trained persons to operate. These drawbacks were overcome by biosensing methods. We review these biosensors, which are based on (i) measurement of electrons, that is, current generated from splitting of hydrogen peroxide released during oxidation of fructosyl valine by immobilized fructosyl amino acid oxidase, which is directly proportional to HbA1c concentration, and (ii) direct measurement of HbA1c by some specific reaction. HbA1c biosensors work optimally within 4 to 1800 s, between pH 7.0 and 9.0 and between 25 and 45 °C, and in the range of 1 to 10,000 μM, with a detection limit between 20 and 500 μM and sensitivity between 4.6 nA and 21.5 μA mM−1 cm−2 and stable over a period of 5 to 90 days. We suggest the ways to modify existing HbA1c biosensors, leading to simple, reliable, and economical sensors ideally suited for point-of-care treatment. 相似文献

Coriaria, which has the most conspicuously disjunct distribution of the flowering plants, is distributed in four separate areas of the world. The phylogenetic relationships of 12 Coriaria species collected from the representative disjunct areas were inferred by comparing 2416 bp of the combined data set of rbcL (a large subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) and matK (maturase K) genes. The phylogenetic tree shows that the Chile-Papua New Guinea-New Zealand-Pacific islands species and the Central America-northern South America species form a sister group, and the Eurasian clade is more basal to them. The divergence time between the Eurasian group and the other species was estimated as 63 or 59 million years ago using rbcL and matK molecular clocks, respectively. These results do not support previously proposed hypotheses which explain the disjunct distribution on the basis of continental drift but suggest that the distribution pattern was formed by several geographical migrations and separations in the Cenozoic. 相似文献

Sequence data from four DNA regions, namely, chloroplast trnL‐trnF and rps4, mitochondrial nad5, and nuclear 26S rDNA, were surveyed from 89 taxa traditionally associated with the Hookeriales, five Hypnales and five outgroups. Phylogenetic reconstruction was performed using the maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood optimality criteria and by Bayesian phylogenetic inference. Thirteen morphological characters were optimized on the resulting phylogeny using maximum likelihood. Inferences of character evolution based on the molecular phylogeny suggest that (1) the core of pleurocarpous mosses (i.e. the Hypnanae) is best defined and thus distinguished from the Ptychomnianae by smooth rather than furrowed capsules, (2) a synapomorphy for the Ptychomnianae is the short and double (or absent) costa and (3) the Hookeriales are defined by undifferentiated alar cells. The Ptychomniaceae plus Garovagliaceae are recognized as a single family in its own order, the Ptychomniales ord. nov. and superorder, the Ptychomnianae, superord. nov. This superorder is sister to the combined Hypnales and Hookeriales, i.e. the Hypnanae. The Hookeriales are interpreted as consisting of seven families, the Hypopterygiaceae, Saulomataceae fam. nov., Daltoniaceae, Schimperobryaceae fam. nov., Hookeriaceae, Leucomiaceae and Pilotrichaceae. The Adelotheciaceae are embedded within the Daltoniaceae and considered synonymous with that family. Within the Ptychomniaceae, Ptychomniella is raised from a subgenus of Ptychomnion to generic status. Euptychium setigerum and its monospecific section, Crassisubulata, are transferred to Garovaglia. Callicostella diatomophila is transferred to Diploneuron. Additional alterations at the generic level await more data. 相似文献

We inferred the phylogenetic structure and species limits within Coprinellus by using a newly generated multigene alignment of LSU, ITS and β-tubulin sequences. We sampled 154 specimens of 71 species out of ca. 80 known taxa in Coprinellus and inferred phylogenetic relationships by Bayesian MCMC and ML bootstrapping. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses revealed 17 new species, five of which are described herein. Coprinellus was split into three large clades, one comprising species with an initially continuous sheath of veil (Domestici/Micacei clade) and two consisting of primarily setulose (haired) species (eurysporoid and Core Setulosi clades). The separation of veiled species and the clade structure therein corresponds well to the morphology-based sectional classification, although the inclusion of certain setulose taxa (e.g. C. disseminatus, C. verrucispermus, C. curtus etc.) in these clades necessitates a new morphological definition for the sections. Morphological traits are discussed for all clades of Coprinellus. Species limits in the eurysporoid and Core Setulosi clades are scrutinized in detail. Future directions of species-rank research and an artificial key to the recovered setulose species of Coprinellus is presented. 相似文献

Cell division in Dictyostelium with special emphasis on actomyosin organization in cytokinesis 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
This study focuses on the dynamic reorganization of actin and myosin ("conventional" myosin, or myosin-II) during cytokinesis in D. discoideum. This is the first study identifying the birefringence of the spindle microtubules as well as three sets of microfilamentous structure in Dictyostelium. The change of organization in these fibrillar structures was followed in real-time with video microscopy, using a Universal Polarizing Microscope equipped with polarized-light (POL) and differential interference contrast (DIC) optics combined with digital image processing. High-frequency mitotic cells were obtained by semi-synchronous culture, and high-resolution observations were made by utilizing the agar-overlay method (Yumura et al.: Journal of Cell Biology 99:894-899, 1984). The molecular identity of the birefringent structures was determined by fluorescence microscopy. Through-focus observations were performed with an axial resolution of 0.3 micron depth of field. The actomyosin fibrils show a dramatic reorganization throughout mitosis. The fibrils at the leading lamellipodia disappear, and there is a striking assembly of the cortical actomyosin in pro-metaphase, which is accompanied by a decrease in cell volume. The cortical actomyosin gradually increases through anaphase. After late anaphase, very active polar lamellipodia, with an average life of less than 1 minute, are formed. We confirmed that the polar lamellipodia include actin, but not myosin-II. At the cleavage furrow, the microfilaments form two distinctive structures: circular contractile ring at the equator, and a cortical filament array parallel to the polar axis. Myosin is localized in the contractile ring, but not associated with the axial array of F-actin. Actomyosin in the contractile ring gradually transforms into cortical network at the posterior region of daughter cells. The constriction of the furrow is accompanied by a drastic efflux of water as evidenced by highly active contractile vacuole formation and turbulent motion of minute vesicles connected to the furrow. This study demonstrates the presence of a new microfilament structure, as well as the dynamic property of the contractile ring, and sheds new light on the contractile mechanisms underlying cytokinesis. 相似文献
