Recently released spores of the kelps Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag., Nereocystis luetkeana (Mert.) Post. and Rupr., Laminaria farlowii Setch., and Pterygophora californica Rupr. had different levels of net photosynthesis. Spore-specific photosynthesis–irradiance relationships were similar in many respects for M. pyrifera, N. luetkeana, and L. farlowii spores. All three species had low rates of net light-saturated photosynthesis. In contrast, spores of P. californica had higher photosynthetic potential and overall net photosynthesis than the other three species. On a cell carbon basis, however, photosynthetic rates in N. luetkeana spores were similar to those of P. californica spores and higher than those of M. pyrifera spores. Chlorophyll a content of spores varied 10-fold among species. The rank order of significant differences in chlorophyll a content was P. californica > L. farlowii > N. luetkeana > M. pyrifera. As a result, chlorophyll-specific measurements suggest M. pyrifera and N. luetkeana spores had much higher quantum efficiency and photosynthetic potential than either P. californica or L. farlowii spores. Maternal carbon and nitrogen investment significantly differed in spores of M. pyrifera, N. luetkeana, and P. californica with P. californica > M. pyrifera > N. luetkeana. Carbon content in spores of each of these three species increased by about 30% during 12 h of saturating irradiance. We suggest that the photosynthetic capabilities of and maternal investment in spores may be related to the spore as a unit of dispersal, to the reproductive ecology of the parental sporophytic stages, and to the growth and physiology of the germling gametophyte stages.  相似文献

More than 1000 spores from 11 species of red algae were collected; their differences in size and sinking rates were measured using a new micro-video technique. A relationship between size and sinking rate was shown with larger spores generally sinking faster than smaller ones. Variability in spore size, or lack thereof, is a species characteristic. Cryptopleura violacea (J. G. Ag.) Kylin and Neoagardhiella baileyi (Kutz.) Wynne and Taylor were found to produce a wide range of spore sizes. Such variability in size may be related to differences in spore formation. Centrifugation was used to separate the contents of spores to show differences in them. The ecological implications of these observations are considered.  相似文献

A simple test was used to determine whether or not Pasteuria penetrans spores would attach to 17 species of nematodes. All susceptible individuals had spores attached to their cuticles after 24 h of gentle agitation in suspensions containing 105spores/ml. Spores of P. penetrans from six populations of Meloidogyne only adhered to species of Meloidogyne and they adhered in greatest numbers to the species from which they had been originally isolated. Sonication of spores from infected females increased attachment but the effect was dependent on pH and whether the test was conducted in tap or distilled water. Invasion of tomato roots was reduced by up to 86% when, rather than using healthy juveniles, second-stage juveniles bearing 15 or more spores were added to soil at high densities (1000 or 3000/plant); at low densities (500/plant) invasion was not significantly affected. The rate of development of M. incognita juveniles infected with P. penetrans was slower than that of healthy juveniles. The numbers of second-generation of M. incognita were reduced by 82–93% when juveniles encumbered with 1–15 spores were added to soil instead of those bearing no spores. Pasteuria penetrans populations differed in their aggressiveness and when juveniles encumbered with the same number of spores from two populations were added to soil there were differences in the numbers of females that became infected. The implications of these results for the development of P. penetrans as a biological control agent are discussed.  相似文献

The Bangia phase of Bangia fuscopurpurea was grown in laboratory culture in a variety of photoperiod and temperature regimes. Plants of the Bangia phase grown from 2 types of asexual spores, monospores and conchospores, exhibited growth differences under similar growing conditions. Plants derived from monospores grew more rapidly and matured earlier than those derived from carpospores. Day length and temperature were found to significantly influence growth rule, maturation, and plant size. Long day lengths resulted in more rapid growth in filament length and diameter and earlier spore formation and spore release. Maximum filament length was observed in a 12/12 hr light-dark cycle at 15 C. Spore formation and release were delayed by decreasing day length or temperature. Temperature and photoperiod were also found to influence the type of spores produced by the Bangia phase. When grown at 22 C, the Bangia phase produced only monospores, which reproduced the Bangia phase. At 9 C, with photoperiods of 11 hr or more of light, the Bangia phase produced carpospores which gave rise to the alternating Conchocelis phase. The conditions under which sporogenesis occurred determined the spore type differentiated.  相似文献

A new species of aquatic Phycomycete, Physoderma dulichii Johns, parasitic on the aquatic sedge Dulichium arundinaceum (L.) Britt., is described from northern Michigan. This parasite infects and kills the upper epidermal cells of the host leaves. Macroscopically, infection by P. dulichii is indicated by striking brown bands with irregular margins, at intervals on the upper surfaces of the leaves. Like other species of Physoderma, this organism's development includes two distinct phases, an epibiotic monocentric phase producing asexual zoospores and an endobiotic polycentric phase bearing thick-walled resting spores that germinate after an extensive period of maturation at low temperature to form zoospores. The morphology and development of the two phases and of resting spore germination are reported in detail. Only the immature leaves of the host are susceptible to infection, which may be initiated by the introduction of mature resting spores, zoospores from germinated resting spores, or zoospores from epibiotic sporangia. Resting-spore zoospores may also produce the endobiotic stage directly. Initiation of infection in nature requires that the terminal cluster of immature leaves on the host plant be submerged, but infection of subsequently formed leaves of emergent culms can be accomplished through the agency of zoospores from epibiotic sporangia on older leaves. The relation of infected stands of hosts to their environment is discussed and the importance of standing water to infection noted. The geographical distribution of the parasite shows correlation with the drainage basins of the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and the northern Atlantic Coastal Plain  相似文献

Laboratory studies were used to examine how variation in the density of spore settlement influences gametophyte growth, reproduction, and subsequent sporophyte production in the kelps Pterygophora californica Ruprecht and Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. In still (non-aerated) cultures, egg maturation in both species was delayed when spores were seeded at densities 300 · mm?2. Although the density at which this inhibition was first observed was similar for both species, the age at which their eggs matured was not. P. californica females reached sexual maturity an average of 4 days (or ~ 30%) sooner than did M, pyrifera. As observed previously in field experiments, per capita sporophyte production was negatively density dependent for both species when seeded at spore densities of 10 · mm?2. Total sporophyte production (i.e. number · cm?2) for both species, however, was greatest at intermediate densities of spore settlement (~ 50 spores · mm?2). In contrast, total sporophyte production by P. californica steadily increased with increasing spore density in aerated cultures; highest sporophyte density was observed on slides seeded at a density of 1000 spores · mm?2. Preliminary experiments with P. californica involving manipulation of aeration and nutrients indicate that inhibition of gametophyte growth and reproduction at higher densities of spore settlement in non-aerated cultures was probably caused by nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Each sporangium in the Upper Devonian taxon Barinophyton citrulliforme contains both microspores and megaspores. Microspores range up to 50 μm in diam and possess a homogeneous sporoderm characterized by an outer separable layer. The sporoderm of the megaspores (up to 900 μm) is constructed of sporopollenin units that are loosely arranged in the outer portion of the wall, and that give the megaspore wall a spongy organization. Ultrastructural evidence suggests that the small spores were not abortive megaspores, but that both spore types were functional. The spores of this plant, as well as other Devonian spores that show less dramatic size differences, are suggested as demonstrating a phase in the evolution of heterospory where sex determination was established in spores within the same sporangium prior to the evolution of micro- and megasporangia.  相似文献

Variation of 20 quantitative characters was examined within and among 10 populations of the predominantly outcrossing Phlox drummondii and 4 populations of the predominantly selfing P. cuspidata grown in a greenhouse. Multivariate analysis of variance, considering all characters simultaneously, indicated that there were significant differences among populations in both species while analysis of individual characters demonstrated that there were significant population differences for 19 characters in P. drummondii and 13 characters in P. cuspidata. On average, 16% of the total phenotypic variation in P. drummondii occurred among populations compared to less than 4% of the total variation in P. cuspidata. In addition, P. drummondii exhibited significant differences among families within populations more frequently than P. cuspidata. Most observed variation in both species occurred within families where environmental and genetic sources of variation could not be partitioned. There was a trend for P. drummondii to have higher heritabilities than P. cuspidata for most characters even when assumptions about breeding systems were relaxed. Thus, the outbreeding species exhibited larger genetic differences among populations and among families within populations than the selfing species in the greenhouse environment. These data suggest that P. drummondii has the greater evolutionary potential of the two species and are consistent with the hypothesis that differences in population structure result from differences in the breeding systems of the two species.  相似文献

This revision of sevenPorphyra species of Helgoland was based on a study of the structure of their fertile thalli and the behaviour of their spores. Regarding the reproductive organization the species may be arranged in two groups.P. leucosticta andP. purpureo-violacea are obligate monoecious species. Asexual thalli have never been observed in the field. The other five species are generally dioecious. Isomorphic sexual thalli and asexually propagating ones are mixed in uniform populations. Carpospores originating from sexual fusion develop into the diploid Conchocelis phase. Sporangia of asexual plants, though homologous in formation, produce spores of different kinds: aplanospores that give rise to the vegetative thallus directly (inP. umbilicalis, P. insolita n. sp. andP. ochotensis) and spores that develop into haploid Conchocelis (inP. laciniata and inP. linearis). P. laciniata — formerly considered synonymous withP. purpurea — is an independent species. “In an investigation into the life-history of an alga the aim should be to obtain a series of observations of the development of the thallus from the germinating spore and then of the development of the reproductive organs on the mature thallus. In cases where both sexual and asexual spores are formed the germination of both types of spore should be followed, ...” (Drew, 1954, p. 184)  相似文献

Teliospores were aerated and agitated in a mineral salts medium and their free amino acid contents were analyzed at eight different times, from shortly after imbibition of water until just before germ tube emergence. In addition to the common amino acids, eight unidentified ninhydrin-positive components were detected. About 50 % or more of nearly each of the amino acids diffused out of the spores during the initial phase of germination. These released amino acids were actively taken up by the spores during the latter stages of germination. The free amino acids in largest amounts in the dormant spores of T. caries were arginine 15.0, glutamic acid 6.3, and alanine 3.7 μmoles per g dry spores. Together these three amino acids accounted for about 71 % of the total free amino acids in dormant spores of T. caries and T. controversa. The total amounts of free amino acids in spores of common bunt were much higher than in spores of dwarf bunt.  相似文献

Seven out of nine Penicillium isolates from mouldy maize in Yugoslavia have been differentiated into the adjacent species P. aurantiogriseum and P. commune. Nephrotoxicity of cultured mycelia in the rat has been demonstrated for all isolates of both species and was correlated usefully, though indirectly, with the production of benzodiazepine secondary metabolites, notably auranthine. Shredded wheat (22 g) moulded by an example of each species and fed to a rat over 4 days elicited renal pathology in the P3 segment of proximal tubules, involving frequent pyknosis and extensive mitosis typical of this as yet uncharacterised toxin. The effect was attributed in P. aurantiogriseum at least partly to the spores. Prominent pathology was elicited by only lg of spores given over 4 days.  相似文献

Of the 32 taxa examined, 13 contained 32 spores in each sporangium and are considered apo-gamous, 14 were sexual species with 64 spores per sporangium, and 5 had 32 spores in some sporangia and 64 in others. When considered as a whole, the spores ranged in size from 29.9 to 74.88μ. Most species had oval or globose spores but several had tetrahedral spores. The spores of all were radially symmetrical. Almost all of the species possessed a crassimarginate type of laesura and all except C. cooperae and C. viscida had a perispore. The ornamentation of the perispore showed the following patterns: napate, granulate, psilate, lobate, foveate, and echinate. The exine pattern was predominantly psilate but foveate, rugulate, napate, and granulate conditions were observed. Seventeen taxa were found to have some degree of spore abortion.  相似文献

Soils from avocado (Persea americana Mill.) orchards in Israel (IS) and California (CA), both sites with a Mediterranean climate, were sampled and analyzed for the species and quantities of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (VAMF) spores in them, and for soil physical and chemical characteristics.Numbers of spores were similar in soil from IS and CA but the dominant VAMF species were very different. In IS the most common fungi were Sclerocystis sinuosa and Glomus macrocarpum. In CA, Gl. constrictum was present in every orchard examined and Gl. fasciculatum was nearly as widespread. Acaulospora spp. and other Glomus spp. also were found, including A. elegans which has never before been reported from CA.The differences in VAMF populations and species constituents found on two continents but in areas with similar climates and soil types may be due to host or edaphic factors. Different avocado rootstocks are used in the two countries and lower pH and higher soil fertility levels were present in CA soils.The total VAMF spore populations in each orchard was about 275 per 100 mL soil. The population level was not correlated with any of the soil physical or chemical characteristics examined nor with avocado cultivar or age. In IS no fungus spores were found in three orchards; available P, Ca, Mg and Cu levels were high in these soils.  相似文献

 The aim of this study was to compare mycorrhizal abundance and diversity in sites with different regimes of disturbance in a tropical rain forest at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Arbuscular mycorrhizal spores were quantified at two sites: closed canopy and gaps in the forest. Data were recorded during dry, rainy, and windy ("nortes") seasons. Spores of eight Glomus species, sporocarps of three Sclerocystis species, three species of Acaulospora and two of Gigaspora were found. Significant differences in the number of species and spores were found among seasons. The highest numbers of species and spores were observed during the dry season, with a marked decrease during the rainy season. Our results show that disturbance does not but seasonality does affect abundance and richness of mycorrhizal spores in this tropical wet forest. Accepted: 11 October 1998  相似文献

The applicability of six fluorescent probes (four esterase probes: acetoxymethyl ester of Calcein [Calcein‐AM], 5‐chloromethylfluorescein diacetate [CMFDA], fluorescein diacetate [FDA], and 2′,7′‐dichlorofluorescein diacetate [H2DCFDA]; and two membrane probes: bis‐(1,3‐dibutylbarbituric acid) trimethine oxonol [DiBAC4(3)] and SYTOX‐Green) as vitality stains was tested on live and killed cells of 40 phytoplankton strains in exponential and stationary growth phases, belonging to 12 classes and consisting of four cold‐water, 26 temperate, and four warm‐water species. The combined live/dead ratios of all six probes indicated significant differences between the 12 plankton classes (P < 0.01) and between individual species (P < 0.05). No specific differences were observed among strains of one species, among species or strains from different origin, nor between cells in exponential and stationary growth phase except for FDA. FDA showed a significant (P < 0.05) drop of <20% in fluorescence intensity in stationary cells. Of the four esterase probes, the live/dead ratios of FDA and CMFDA were not significantly different from each other, and both performed better than Calcein‐AM and H2DCFDA (P < 0.001). Of the two membrane probes, DIBAC4(3) stained rhodophytes and euglenophytes much better than SYTOX‐Green. The 13 algal strains best stainable (high live/dead ratios) among all six probes belonged to nine genera from six classes of phytoplankton. In conclusion, FDA, CMFDA, DIBAC4(3), and SYTOX‐Green represent a wide choice of vitality probes in the study of phytoplankton ecology, applicable in many species from different algal classes, originating from different regions and at different stages of growth.  相似文献

Regional variation in spore deposition and viability was studied for two fungi, Fomitopsis rosea (Alb. & Schwein.: Fr.) P. Karst. and Phlebia centrifuga P. Karst., both confined to old‐growth spruce forests in the boreal zone. Seven regions in Sweden were studied along a north‐south transect in which the historical impact from forestry increases and the amount old forests decreases towards the south. The two southernmost regions were located outside the distribution border of the species. Spore deposition was measured species specifically as heterokaryotisation of homokaryotic mycelia growing on wood discs. There was a significant decline in spore deposition towards the south for both species. F. rosea deposited an average amount of 111 spores m?2 24 h?1 in the northernmost region compared to less than 1 spore in the four southernmost regions. The corresponding values for P. centrifuga were 27 spores m?2 24 h?1 in the north compared to less than 2 spores in the 4 southernmost regions. No deposition was found south of the distribution borders. The viability of spores from local populations within each region was measured as germination success on nutrient media. Individual fruiting bodies from large populations in the north generally produced spores with higher germinability than fruiting bodies from geographically isolated populations in the central and southern regions. However, there was a high variation among the southern populations. Our data suggest that some populations in mid‐ and south Sweden may suffer from negative genetic effects, possibly associated with fragmentation and loss of habitat. Thus, the combination of low spore deposition and low germinability of spores may be a threat to the long‐term persistence of F. rosea and P. centrifuga in southern Sweden. Several other species may experience the same situation, especially when considering the severe decline of dead wood in Swedish forests.  相似文献

Abstract

The germination and establishment abilities of different types of propagules under natural conditions is an area in bryophyte reproductive biology that is largely unknown. In some species gametophyte fragments, rather than spores, may be primarily responsible for establishment of new colonies in nature, and the presence of other mosses may have an effect on establishment processes. These ideas were tested experimentally using four species of Tortula grown in a glasshouse under semi-natural conditions. The relative germination and growth abilities of spores and gametophytic fragments were tested under each combination of the following treatments: (1) continuous hydration (using a mist system), or periodic drying; (2) substrate of bare sand, a clump of Dicranum scoparium, or (for spores only) the clump of Tortula from which sporophytes were taken. Fragments produced new shoots much more quickly than spores under either hydration condition but spores germinated at a higher rate. Germination rates of both spores and fragments were greatly reduced (usually to zero) in clumps of Tortula or Dicranum under either hydration condition. Some differences between species were noted. In a further experiment filter-sterilized water extracts of each species were applied to spores on agar. Again, strong effects on spore germination and protonemal growth were noted. Patterns of inhibition differed between species and reflected those found in the previous experiment, indicating that the inhibition effect may be due to a water soluble chemical rather than the physical properties of the moss clumps. These studies present the first experimental evidence for the chemical inhibition of spores by mature plants. When taken together with previous reports of chemical interactions among protonemal systems, considerable ecological significance of these results is suggested.  相似文献

Cell division patterns during germination of spores of Anemia (A. hirsuta, A. munchii, A. phyllitidis), Lygodium (L. circinatum, L. flexuosum, L. japonicum, L. salicifolium) and Mohria caffrorum have been examined by light microscopy of glycol methacrylate embedded materials. Spores of all species in a genus exhibited a constant pattern of division under different conditions of germination. In spores of species of Anemia, following an asymmetrical division, the proximal cell differentiated into the protonemal cell while the distal cell divided to produce the rhizoid. A similar division sequence was found in spores of Mohria caffrorum, but the fate of cells formed was reversed. In Lygodium spores, a proximal cell formed by an initial division of the spore cut off a protonemal cell, a rhizoid and a wedge-shaped cell by walls parallel to the polar axis. Our results contradict earlier observations on cell division sequence during germination of spores of these genera based on whole mount preparations.  相似文献

The external spore morphology of Phylloglossum drummondii was studied with the scanning electron microscope and shown to share a number of features with spores in the subgenus Urostachys in Lycopodium. Within Urostachys the affinities of P. drummondii were less evident: the foramino-fossulate distal face, pyramidal proximal surface, and subcircular outline of its spores are similar to spores in the section Phlegmaria while the weakly foveolate proximal surface and raised laesurae are characteristic of spores in the section Selago.  相似文献
