Amphiphilic bilayer membrane structures (vesicles) have been postulated to have been abiotically formed and spontaneously assemble on the prebiotic Earth, providing compartmentalization for the origin of life. These vesicles are similar to modern cellular membranes and can serve to contain water-soluble species, concentrate species, and have the potential to catalyze reactions. The origin of the use of photochemical energy in metabolism (i.e. energy transduction) is one of the central issues in the origin of life. This includes such questions as how energy transduction may have occurred before complex enzymatic systems, such as required by contemporary photosynthesis, had developed and how simple a photochemical system is possible. It has been postulated that vesicle structures developed the ability to capture and transduce light, providing energy for reactions. It has also been shown that pH gradients across the membrane surface can be photochemically created, but coupling these to drive chemical reactions has been difficult. Colloidal semiconducting mineral particles are known to photochemically drive redox chemistry. We propose that encapsulation of these particles has the potential to provide a source of energy transduction inside vesicles, and thereby drive protocellular chemistry, and represents a model system for early photosynthesis. In our experiments we show that TiO2 particles, in the ~20 nm size range, can be incorporated into vesicles and retain their photoactivity through the dehydration/rehydration cycles that have been shown to concentrate species inside a vesicle.  相似文献

The cycle structure of enzymatic neural networks may be characterized in terms of number of cycles exhibited, size of cycle state sets and cycle lengths. Simulation experiments show that the stability properties of these networks have some unusual features which are not exhibited by networks of two-state switching elements or by randomly constructed ecosystem models. The behavioral and structural stability of these systems decreases with their structural complexity, as measured by the number of components. The behavioral and structural stability of enzymatic neural networks also decreases with structural complexity, as measured by the number of excitase types, but only up to the middle level of excitases per neuron. This is the point of highest potential responsiveness of the system to environmental stimuli. Beyond this point the behavioral and structural stability increase. This is due to the fact that the number of possible states increases up to this point and decreases beyond it. The number of possible states, not the number of components, serves as the useful measure of complexity in these types of systems. The selection circuits learning algorithm has been used to evolve networks whose cycle structures have desired features.  相似文献

Benthic community metabolism was studied on four stream systems located in different biomes in the United States: the eastern deciduous forest (Pennsylvania, PA, and Michigan, MI), the high desert (Idaho, ID), and the coniferous forest (Oregon, OR). Studies were designed to test the hypothesis advanced within the River Continuum Concept that a transition in community metabolism will occur from a predominance of heterotrophy in headwaters to a predominance of autotrophy in mid-sized reaches, with a return to heterotrophy further downstream. Both gross primary productivity (GPP) and community respiration (CR24) increased with downstream direction on all systems. Net daily metabolism (NDM, or GPP – CR24) shifted from heterotrophy (–NDM, GPP < CR24) to autotrophy (+NDM, GPP > CR24) with downstream direction at all sites, supporting the hypothesis. Annual metabolism in the most upstream reach of all sites was dominated by respiration; however, the farthest downstream reach was not necessarily the most autotrophic. Site-specific factors affected manifestation of the trend. Photosynthesis predominated annual metabolism in reaches (designated 1–4 in order of increasing size) 2–4 in ID, 3 and 4 in OR, and 4 in MI. In PA annual photosynthesis was slightly greater than respiration only at Station 3. Photosynthesis was predominant most consistently in ID and respiration most often in PA. About half the reaches that were heterotrophic annually were autotrophic at one or more seasons. Annual means of benthic GPP, CR24 and NDM ranged from 0.16 to 3.37, 0.36 to 2.88 and –0.73 to 0.50 g O2 · m2 · d1, respectively. Metabolic rates were usually high in PA and MI (and sometimes ID) and almost always lowest in OR. Parameters accounting for most variance in multiple linear regression analyses of the combined metabolism data from all sites were indicators of stream size, photosynthetically active radiation, temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration.  相似文献

Standard theories suggest that the first informational replicator involved RNA molecules (or a more primitive analogue) and that a preliminary step for the development of such replicating systems may have been the emergence of subunits capable of forming chains and interchain pairings. Following these hypotheses, this discussion describes various abstract simulations designed to investigate the structures resulting from such interactions for generalised subunits. Three classes of pairing strategy were considered for a range of subunit concentrations. The resulting dynamic self-organization of the systems produced high levels of structural complexity (some at low subunit concentrations and in the presence of disruptive subunits) and a significantly increased percentage of complementary base pairing (particularly in the more substantial structures). These properties of the systems, which did not require pre-existing replicators, templates or functional catalysts, were shown to be sensitive to the form of pairing strategy, subunit concentrations and various conditions that could theoretically be altered by products of the systems. Though no systems behaved as a replicator, some possessed collections of properties from which a replicating system might theoretically be constructed without requiring the introduction of additional classes of properties. The implications of such systems were considered with respect to the origin of life.  相似文献

We assess the use to which bioinformatics in the form of bacterial genome sequences, functional gene probes and the protein sequence databases can be applied to hypotheses about obligate autotrophy in eubacteria. Obligate methanotrophy and obligate autotrophy among the chemo- and photo-lithotrophic bacteria lack satisfactory explanation a century or more after their discovery. Various causes of these phenomena have been suggested, which we review in the light of the information currently available. Among these suggestions is the absence in vivo of a functional alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase. The advent of complete and partial genome sequences of diverse autotrophs, methylotrophs and methanotrophs makes it possible to probe the reasons for the absence of activity of this enzyme. We review the role and evolutionary origins of the Krebs cycle in relation to autotrophic metabolism and describe the use of in silico methods to probe the partial and complete genome sequences of a variety of obligate genera for genes encoding the subunits of the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex. Nitrosomonas europaea and Methylococcus capsulatus, which lack the functional enzyme, were found to contain the coding sequences for the E1 and E2 subunits of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase. Comparing the predicted physicochemical properties of the polypeptides coded by the genes confirmed the putative gene products were similar to the active alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase subunits of heterotrophs. These obligate species are thus genomically competent with respect to this enzyme but are apparently incapable of producing a functional enzyme. Probing of the full and incomplete genomes of some cyanobacterial and methanogenic genera and Aquifex confirms or suggests the absence of the genes for at least one of the three components of the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex in these obligate organisms. It is recognized that absence of a single functional enzyme may not explain obligate autotrophy in all cases and may indeed be only be one of a number of controls that impose obligate metabolism. Availability of more genome sequences from obligate genera will enable assessment of whether obligate autotrophy is due to the absence of genes for a few or many steps in organic compound metabolism. This problem needs the technologies and mindsets of the present generation of molecular microbiologists to resolve it.  相似文献

Lipids of nervous tissue: composition and metabolism   总被引:25,自引:0,他引:25
As indicated in the Introduction, the many significant developments in the recent past in our knowledge of the lipids of the nervous system have been collated in this article. That there is a sustained interest in this field is evident from the rather long bibliography which is itself selective. Obviously, it is not possible to summarize a review in which the chemistry, distribution and metabolism of a great variety of lipids have been discussed. However, from the progress of research, some general conclusions may be drawn. The period of discovery of new lipids in the nervous system appears to be over. All the major lipid components have been discovered and a great deal is now known about their structure and metabolism. Analytical data on the lipid composition of the CNS are available for a number of species and such data on the major areas of the brain are also at hand but information on the various subregions is meagre. Such investigations may yet provide clues to the role of lipids in brain function. Compared to CNS, information on PNS is less adequate. Further research on PNS would be worthwhile as it is amenable for experimental manipulation and complex mechanisms such as myelination can be investigated in this tissue. There are reports correlating lipid constituents with the increased complexity in the organization of the nervous system during evolution. This line of investigation may prove useful. The basic aim of research on the lipids of the nervous tissue is to unravel their functional significance. Most of the hydrophobic moieties of the nervous tissue lipids are comprised of very long chain, highly unsaturated and in some cases hydroxylated residues, and recent studies have shown that each lipid class contains characteristic molecular species. Their contribution to the properties of neural membranes such as excitability remains to be elucidated. Similarly, a large proportion of the phospholipid molecules in the myelin membrane are ethanolamine plasmalogens and their importance in this membrane is not known. It is firmly established that phosphatidylinositol and possibly polyphosphoinositides are involved with events at the synapse during impulse propagation, but their precise role in molecular terms is not clear. Gangliosides, with their structural complexity and amphipathic nature, have been implicated in a number of biological events which include cellular recognition and acting as adjuncts at receptor sites. More recently, growth promoting and neuritogenic functions have been ascribed to gangliosides. These interesting properties of gangliosides wIll undoubtedly attract greater attention in the future.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Abstract: The enzymes involved in the microbial metabolism of many important phosphorus- or sulfur-containing xenobiotics, including organophosphate insecticides and precursors to organosulfate and organosulfonate detergents and dyestuffs have been characterized. In several instances their genes have been cloned and analysed. For phosphonate xenobiotics, the enzyme system responsible for the cleavage of the carbon-phosphorus bond has not yet been observed in vitro, though much is understood on a genetic level about phosphonate degradation. Phosphonate metabolism is regulated as part of the Pho regulon, under phosphate starvation control. For organophosphorothionate pesticides the situation is not so clear, and the mode of regulation appears to depend on whether the compounds are utilized to provide phosphorus, carbon or sulfur for cell growth. The same is true for organosulfonate metabolism, where different (and differently regulated) enzymatic pathways are involved in the utilization of sulfonates as carbon and as sulfur sources, respectively. Observations at the protein level in a number of bacteria suggest that a regulatory system is present which responds to sulfate limitation and controls the synthesis of proteins involved in providing sulfur to the cell and which may reveal analogies between the regulation of phosphorus and sulfur metabolism.  相似文献

Neurotransmitters are essential for communication between neurons and hence are vital in the overall integrative functioning of the nervous system. Previous work on acetylcholine metabolism in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has also raised the possibility that transmitter metabolism may play a prominent role in either the achievement or maintenance of the normal structure of the central nervous system in this species. Unfortunately, acetylcholine is rather poorly characterized as a neurotransmitter in Drosophila; consequently, we have begun an analysis of the role of glutamate (probably the best characterized transmitter in this organism) in the formation and/or maintenance of nervous system structure. We present here the results of a series of preliminary analyses. To suggest where glutamatergic function may be localized, an examination of the spatial distribution of high affinity [3H]-glutamate binding sites are presented. We present the results of an analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of enzymatic activities thought to be important in the regulation of transmitter-glutamate pools (i.e., glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase, glutaminase, and glutamate dehydrogenase). To begin to examine whether mutations in any of these functions are capable of affecting glutamatergic activity, we present the results of an initial genetic analysis of one enzymatic function, glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), chosen because of its differential distribution within the adult central nervous system and musculature.  相似文献

Specific enzymatic bands in disc gel electrophoresis are generally determined by either of two methods: (i) Gel is sliced and the enzymatic activity is assayed on each slice or (ii) gel is stained histochemically, if the product of the enzymatic reaction and the dye can form an insoluble precipitate, and the activity band is located on the gel by a color band. The former is laborious and often inaccurate in the calculation of electrophoretic mobility. The latter, often nonspecific, is not applicable when the enzymatic product cannot form an insoluble precipitate with the dye. Staining with tetrazolium salt has been widely employed for amine oxidase (1–6). However, this method has limitations: (i) Tetrazolium salt is nonspecific for amine oxidase and may show artifacts (6,7), and (ii) the use of tetrazolium salt is limited only to substrates containing indolamine such as tryptamine or serotonin (8). Other substrates, like benzylamine, the most active substrate for plasma amine oxidase, do not form a color band with tetrazolium salt. This communication reports a simple spectrophotometric method for the identification of the enzymatic activity band for amine oxidase on disc gel electrophoresis. Neither slice and assay nor staining is needed. This method may possibly also be used generally for other enzyme systems which have a specific absorption at ultraviolet or visible range.  相似文献

The structure of the metabolic network is highly conserved, but we know little about its evolutionary origins. Key for explaining the early evolution of metabolism is solving a chicken–egg dilemma, which describes that enzymes are made from the very same molecules they produce. The recent discovery of several nonenzymatic reaction sequences that topologically resemble central metabolism has provided experimental support for a “metabolism first” theory, in which at least part of the extant metabolic network emerged on the basis of nonenzymatic reactions. But how could evolution kick-start on the basis of a metal catalyzed reaction sequence, and how could the structure of nonenzymatic reaction sequences be imprinted on the metabolic network to remain conserved for billions of years? We performed an in vitro screening where we add the simplest components of metabolic enzymes, proteinogenic amino acids, to a nonenzymatic, iron-driven reaction network that resembles glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). We observe that the presence of the amino acids enhanced several of the nonenzymatic reactions. Particular attention was triggered by a reaction that resembles a rate-limiting step in the oxidative PPP. A prebiotically available, proteinogenic amino acid cysteine accelerated the formation of RNA nucleoside precursor ribose-5-phosphate from 6-phosphogluconate. We report that iron and cysteine interact and have additive effects on the reaction rate so that ribose-5-phosphate forms at high specificity under mild, metabolism typical temperature and environmental conditions. We speculate that accelerating effects of amino acids on rate-limiting nonenzymatic reactions could have facilitated a stepwise enzymatization of nonenzymatic reaction sequences, imprinting their structure on the evolving metabolic network.

The evolutionary origins of metabolism are largely unknown. This study shows that the prebiotically available proteinogenic amino acid cysteine can promote the metabolism-like rate-limiting formation of ribose-5-phosphate, suggesting that early metabolic pathways could have emerged thought the stepwise enzymatization of non-enzymatic reaction sequences.  相似文献

Habitat heterogeneity is one of the main factors determining distribution of organisms, and vegetation is of primary importance in shaping the structural environment in aquatic systems. The effect of macrophyte complexity on macroinvertebrates has been well researched; however, much remains to be revealed about the influence of complexity on epiphytic algae. Here, we used fractal dimension to study the effect of complexity at two scales, macrophyte architecture and leaf shape, on several parameters of the epiphytic algal community (number of individuals, biomass, taxon richness and diversity) in a Pampean stream. Four submerged macrophyte species with different complexities and associated algae were sampled in late spring, summer and autumn. Important differences were found in fractal dimension of the whole plant and leaves among macrophyte species. The particulate organic matter and chlorophyll a associated positively to leaf fractal dimension, but not to plant fractal dimension, partially supporting the hypothesis of a positive effect of macrophyte complexity on periphyton biomass. No association was found in fractal dimension with algal abundance, taxon richness or diversity. Complementary, a mesocosm experiment was performed with plastic imitations of different plant fractal dimensions. After four weeks, there were differences in chlorophyll a and autotrophy index between treatments that suggested a positive effect of complexity on autotrophic periphyton biomass. These results indicate that the well-known positive effect of macrophyte complexity on macroinvertebrates might be partially explained by a positive effect of complexity on periphyton biomass.  相似文献

Proteins play an important role in normal structure and function of the cells. Oxidative modification of proteins may greatly alter the structure and may subsequently lead to loss of normal physiological cell functions and may lead to abnormal function of cell and eventually to cell death. These modifications may be reversible or irreversible. Reversible protein modifications, such as phosphorylation, can be overcome by specific enzymes that cause a protein to 'revert' back to its original protein structure, while irreversible protein modifications cannot. Several important irreversible protein modifications include protein nitration and HNE modification, both which have been extensively investigated in research on the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). From the earliest stage of AD throughout the advancement of the disorder there is evidence of increased protein nitration and HNE modification. These protein modifications lead to decreased enzymatic activity, which correlates directly to protein efficacy and provides support for several common themes in AD pathology, namely altered energy metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced cholinergic neurotransmission. The current review summarized some of the findings on protein oxidation related to different stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that will be helpful in understanding the role of protein oxidation in the progression and pathogenesis of AD.  相似文献

Peroxisomes are subcellular respiratory organelles which contain catalase and H2O2-producing flavin oxidases as basic enzymatic constituents. These organelles have an essentially oxidative type of metabolism and have the potential to carry out different important metabolic pathways. In recent years the presence of different types of superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been demonstrated in peroxisomes from several plant species, and more recently the occurrence of SOD has been extended to peroxisomes from human and transformed yeast cells. A copper,zinc-containing SOD from plant peroxisomes has been purified and partially characterized. The production of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals has been studied in peroxisomes. There are two sites of O2- production in peroxisomes: (1) in the matrix, the generating system being xanthine oxidase; and (2) in peroxisomal membranes, dependent on reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), and the electron transport components of the peroxisomal membrane are possibly responsible. The generation of oxygen radicals in peroxisomes could have important effects on cellular metabolism. Diverse cellular implications of oxyradical metabolism in peroxisomes are discussed in relation to phenomena such as cell injury, peroxisomal genetic diseases, peroxisome proliferation and oxidative stress, metal and salt stress, catabolism of nucleic acids, senescence, and plant pathogenic processes.  相似文献

Parallel declines in insect-pollinated plants and their pollinators have been reported as a result of agricultural intensification. Intensive arable plant communities have previously been shown to contain higher proportions of self-pollinated plants compared to natural or semi-natural plant communities. Though intensive grasslands are widespread, it is not known whether they show similar patterns to arable systems nor whether local and/or landscape factors are influential. We investigated plant community composition in 10 pairs of organic and conventional dairy farms across Ireland in relation to the local and landscape context. Relationships between plant groups and local factors (farming system, position in field and soil parameters) and landscape factors (e.g. landscape complexity) were investigated. The percentage cover of unimproved grassland was used as an inverse predictor of landscape complexity, as it was negatively correlated with habitat-type diversity. Intensive grasslands (organic and conventional) contained more insect-pollinated forbs than non-insect pollinated forbs. Organic field centres contained more insect-pollinated forbs than conventional field centres. Insect-pollinated forb richness in field edges (but not field centres) increased with increasing landscape complexity (% unimproved grassland) within 1, 3, 4 and 5km radii around sites, whereas non-insect pollinated forb richness was unrelated to landscape complexity. Pollination systems within intensive grassland communities may be different from those in arable systems. Our results indicate that organic management increases plant richness in field centres, but that landscape complexity exerts strong influences in both organic and conventional field edges. Insect-pollinated forb richness, unlike that for non-insect pollinated forbs, showed positive relationships to landscape complexity reflecting what has been documented for bees and other pollinators. The insect-pollinated forbs, their pollinators and landscape context are clearly linked. This needs to be taken into account when managing and conserving insect-pollinated plant and pollinator communities.  相似文献

We evaluate the arguments and evidence for a terrestrial vs an aquatic origin for the Insecta. The evidence falls into three categories: (1) evidence that does not support one view more than the other; (2) speculative evidence, which should carry little weight; and (3) evidence that does support one view more than the other. Category 1 includes evidence from locomotory and osmoregulatory systems; plausible functions have been proposed for 'protowings' in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, while locomotory and osmoregulatory mechanisms of insects shed little light on their origins. Fossils, phylogenetic speculation, gill structure and life histories fall into category 2, in which, although speculative, the evidence favours a terrestrial origin. The earliest fossil hexapods were apparently terrestrial and unequivocally aquatic hexapods do not appear until 60–70 million years later, while sister-group relationships point to a terrestrial life style from at least the Hexapoda-Myriapoda stem group. The great variation in gill structure, even within orders, suggests convergence, and the more or less completely aquatic life histories are better interpreted as steps towards independence from land, rather than signs of an aquatic origin. Category 3 includes evidence from the tracheal system. In order to have evolved in water, a tracheal system must have first invaginated, then connected with the body wall for gas exchange with the water, and thirdly connected with the internal organs. It is difficult to envisage functions for the first two stages; on the other hand, the system could have readily evolved on land by invagination of respiratory surfaces, and then have been modified to effect gas exchange in water via gills.  相似文献

The ubiquitin system is crucial for the development and fitness of higher plants. De-etiolation, during which green plants initiate photomorphogenesis and establish autotrophy, is a dramatic and complicated process that is tightly regulated by a massive number of ubiquitylation/de-ubiquitylation events. Here we present site-specific quantitative proteomic data for the ubiquitylomes of de-etiolating seedling leaves of Zea mays L. (exposed to light for 1, 6, or 12 h) achieved through immunoprecipitation-based high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS). Through the integrated analysis of multiple ubiquitylomes, we identified and quantified 1926 unique ubiquitylation sites corresponding to 1053 proteins. We analyzed these sites and found five potential ubiquitylation motifs, KA, AXK, KXG, AK, and TK. Time-course studies revealed that the ubiquitylation levels of 214 sites corresponding to 173 proteins were highly correlated across two replicate MS experiments, and significant alterations in the ubiquitylation levels of 78 sites (fold change >1.5) were detected after de-etiolation for 12 h. The majority of the ubiquitylated sites we identified corresponded to substrates involved in protein and DNA metabolism, such as ribosomes and histones. Meanwhile, multiple ubiquitylation sites were detected in proteins whose functions reflect the major physiological changes that occur during plant de-etiolation, such as hormone synthesis/signaling proteins, key C4 photosynthetic enzymes, and light signaling proteins. This study on the ubiquitylome of the maize seedling leaf is the first attempt ever to study the ubiquitylome of a C4 plant and provides the proteomic basis for elucidating the role of ubiquitylation during plant de-etiolation.  相似文献

Marine snow aggregates represent hotspots of carbon remineralization in the ocean. Various aspects of bacterial dynamics have been investigated on marine snow. To date, extracellular enzymatic activities in aggregates have been measured using small substrate proxies that do not adequately reflect the complexity of biomacromolecules such as polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. To address this issue, we used six structurally distinct, fluorescently labelled polysaccharides to measure enzymatic hydrolysis on aggregates formed with a roller table and in aggregate-free (ambient) seawater from two near-coast sites, north-eastern Gulf of Mexico. A single polysaccharide was incubated in aggregates and ambient seawater. Changes in polysaccharide molecular weight were monitored over time to measure the course of enzymatic hydrolysis. All six polysaccharides were hydrolysed in aggregates, indicating a broad range of enzyme activities in aggregate-associated bacteria. Four substrates were also hydrolysed in ambient waters. Epifluorescence microscopy revealed that nearly all of the bacteria present in original waters were incorporated into aggregates. Therefore hydrolytic activities in ambient waters were presumably due to enzymes spatially disconnected from cells and aggregates. Our results show substantial enzymatic activity in cell/aggregate-free seawater, suggesting a significant role of free enzymes in hydrolytic activity in waters from the north-eastern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

The darwinian concept of "descent with modification" applies to metabolic pathways: pathways sharing similarities must have inherited them from an exclusive, hypothetical ancestral pathway. Comparative anatomy of biochemical pathways is performed using five criteria of homology. Primary homologies of "type I" were defined as several pathways sharing the same enzyme with high specificity for its substrate. Primary homologies of "type II" were defined as the sharing of similar enzymatic functions, cofactors, functional family, or recurrence of a set of reactions. Standard cladistic analysis is used to infer the evolutionary history of metabolic development and the relative ordering of biochemical reactions through time, from a single matrix integrating the whole basic universal metabolism. The cladogram shows that the earliest pathways to emerge are metabolism of amino acids of groups I and II (Asp, Asn, Glu, and Gln). The earliest enzymatic functions are mostly linked to amino acid catabolism: deamination, transamination, and decarboxylation. For some amino acids, catabolism and biosynthesis occur at the same time (Asp, Glu, Lys, and Met). Catabolism precedes anabolism for Asn, Gln, Arg, Trp, His, Tyr, and Phe, and anabolism precedes catabolism for Pro, Ala, Leu, Val, Ile, Cys, Gly, Ser, and Thr. The urea cycle evolves from arginine synthesis. Metabolism of fatty acids and sugars develops after the full development of metabolism of amino acids of groups I and II, and they are associated with the anabolism of amino acids of groups III and IV. Syntheses of aromatic amino acids are branched within sugar metabolism. The Krebs cycle occurs relatively late after the setting of metabolism of amino acids of groups I and II. One portion of the Krebs cycle has a catabolic origin, whereas the other portion has an anabolic origin in pathways of amino acids of groups III and IV. It is not possible to order glycolysis and gluconeogenesis with regard to the Krebs cycle, as they all belong to "period 6." Pentose-phosphate and Calvin cycles are later (periods 7 and 8, respectively). Cladistic analysis of the structure of biochemical pathways makes hypotheses in biochemical evolution explicit and parsimonious.  相似文献

Summary The evolutionary significance of self-incompatibility (SI) traditionally has been linked to reduced inbreeding through enforced outcrossing. This view is founded on the premise that outcrossing reduces inbreeding. It is important, when considering the evolutionary significance of any genetic system, to try to distinguish those factors related to the evolution of, from those related to the maintenance of, the system in question. Three factors are considered important for the maintenance of SI: (1) phylogenetic constraint in species descended from SI ancestors, (2) reduced inbreeding in populations, and (3) fitness benefits to individuals resulting from the avoidance of selfing. I suggest that the first two factors should be rejected when considering the origin of SI (whether one or more origins are hypothesized) and that the increase in individual fitness resulting from the avoidance of self-fertilization among individuals that are heterozygous for deleterious alleles may be sufficient to account for the origin of SI. Self-fertilization in plants (except in species that predominantly self-fertilize) generally results in a reduction in fitness of some individuals due to the increased expression of deleterious or lethal recessive alleles, regardless of the degree of inbreeding in the population or the frequency of the allele in question. Inbreeding is a consequence of population structure in many outcrossing plant species. Complex (multi-locus and multi-allelic) systems of SI exist that reduce inbreeding. However, it is argued that these are derived either from simpler systems of SI that may have very little or no effect on inbreeding, in which case any effect on level of inbreeding is secondary, or are not true self-incompatibility systems and are part of a regulatory system that serves to balance the level of inbreeding and outbreeding. Multi-locus and multi-allelic systems of SI and heteromorphic systems of SI are discussed in terms of derived versus ancestral characteristics. A reassessment of the role of breeding systems in the development of a population structure promoting inbreeding is suggested, which may have been of crucial importance in the success and diversification of angiosperms.  相似文献

Symbioses between chemolithoautotrophic bacteria and the major macrofaunal species found at hydrothermal vents have been reported for numerous sites in the Pacific Ocean. We present microscopical and enzymatic evidence that methylotrophic bacteria occur as intracellular symbionts in a new species of mytilid mussel discovered at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents. Two distinct ultrastructural types of gram-negative procaryotic symbionts were observed within gill epithelial cells by transmission electron microscopy: small coccoid or rod-shaped cells and larger coccoid cells with stacked intracytoplasmic membranes typical of methane-utilizing bacteria. Methanol dehydrogenase, an enzyme diagnostic of methylotrophs, was detected in the mytilid gills, while tests for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, the enzyme diagnostic of autotrophy via the Calvin cycle, were negative. Stable carbon isotope values (δ13C) of mytilid tissue (−32.7 and −32.5% for gill and foot tissues, respectively) fall within the range of values reported for Pacific vent symbioses but do not preclude the use of vent-derived methane reported to be isotopically heavy relative to biogenically produced methane.  相似文献
