A series of 9 experiments was conducted to examine various characteristics of the urinary chemosignal found in the urine of oestrous female mice that accelerates the sexual development of conspecific females. This urinary chemosignal was effective in doses as small as 0.001 ml/day, was present in excreted and bladder urine, required 3 days of treatment starting before Day 29 of age to effect an acceleration of puberty, required a minimum daily exposure of 2 h, and was relatively nonvolatile. In addition the chemosignal from oestrous females was effective in summer but not in winter months, was significantly more effective when collected at the middle or end of the dark portion of the daily cycle than at the beginning of the dark phase or middle of the light phase, and was not affected by food deprivation or shortened photoperiod. Simultaneous treatment of test subjects with urine from oestrous females and grouped females resulted in delays in puberty and simultaneous treatment with urine from oestrous females and urine from males or pregnant or lactating females did not result in any enhanced acceleration of puberty. 相似文献

The experiments examined the timing, duration and possible enhancement effects of group contact on the delay of sexual maturation produced in prepubertal female house mice by urine from grouped females. One or three days of pheromone stimulation at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning was not sufficient to delay puberty in females caged singly. However, pheromone treatment for 7 days, beginning during the first week after weaning, did significantly delay the onset of first vaginal oestrus relative to control females treated with water. Both the timing and duration of pheromone stimulation appear to be critical factors affecting pheromone-induced delay of sexual maturation. Mean ages at first oestrus for females housed with a group of 7 other females, for 3 or 7 days at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning, did not differ from mean ages recorded with urine stimulation only. Contact with other females does not appear to alter or enhance the delay-of-maturation effect achieved with urine stimulation. In all these respects the maturation-delay pheromone of grouped female mice appears to differ from the puberty-accelerating pheromone of male mice. 相似文献

Two experiments were designed to test whether the urinary chemosignal excreted by pregnant and lactating female mice that accelerates puberty in young females is affected by circadian rhythms. The experiments also measured the possible influence of circadian rhythms on the response of the young recipient females. For urine from both pregnant and lactating females there was no difference in the effectiveness for accelerating puberty in urine collected during all 24 h. However, pregnancy urine used for treatment at 1800 and 0000 h, and lactation urine used for treatment at 1800, 0000 and 0600 h, all resulted in significantly earlier mean ages for puberty than pregnancy urine treatment at 0600 or 1200 h, or lactation urine treatment at 1200 h. There was also a significant interaction between the time of urine collection and the time of urine treatment for each urine source; urine was generally more effective in accelerating sexual development when used for treating young females at the same hour at which it had been collected, or at the time interval(s) just before or after the time at which it had been collected. 相似文献

Seven experiments were performed to investigate pregnancy termination, urinary chemosignals, and litter sex ratio variation in female house mice. Experiments tested the effects of urine from adult and prepubertal females, housed individually or in groups, on successful insemination and litter production by females treated at different times and for different periods during the 3 weeks before mating and during gestation. Treatment of females with urine from adult females housed eight per cage or with urine pooled from eight adult females housed individually for 2 or 3 weeks before mating resulted in fewer successful pregnancies and significantly more female-biased litters. Treatment with urine from adult or prepubertal females housed eight per cage or with urine pooled from eight mice housed individually for the first 6 days of gestation or throughout pregnancy resulted in a significant increase in the rate of pregnancy termination. These treatments resulted in lower body weights at birth and slower growth rates in all males and in some females. Puberty was delayed in female progeny from urine-treated dams in five of seven experiments, and these young females attained first oestrus at greater mean body weights than mice in other treatments. These findings indicate that, in mice, at high population density, communication via a urinary chemosignal can alter reproduction in recipient females. Availability of, and competition for, resources such as food would be greater at higher densities, possibly lowering the probability of reproductive success. Pregnancy termination and delays in reproduction and attainment of sexual maturity might lead to greater successful reproduction at a later time. 相似文献

Because plants and animals consume or absorb different amounts of strontium and calcium, anthropologists are able to use strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios from archaeologically recovered human bone to estimate the relative contributions of meat and plants to paleodiets. Often females exhibit higher Sr/Ca ratios than males, a fact usually attributed to lower meat intake among women. However, in vivo and in vitro experiments with laboratory animals show that pregnancy and lactation elevate maternal bone strontium and depress maternal bone calcium because 1) strontium is discriminated against in favor of calcium in the transport of ions to the placenta and mammary glands and 2) pregnancy and lactation facilitate absorption of alkaline earth metals from the gut. In this study, bone Sr/Ca ratios and strontium concentrations were compared between reproductive-age females, postmenopausal females, and adult males from two late prehistoric Native American sites in Georgia: the King site (N = 43) and the Etowah site (N = 51). At the King site, the mean Sr/Ca ratio of females was over 14% greater than that of males. At Etowah, the mean strontium level of reproductive-age females exceeded that of postmenopausal females by almost 25%. Most of the difference, it is argued, is due to pregnancy and lactation. A dietary preference among pregnant and lactating women for foods high in alkaline earths, particularly nuts and corn, may also be partially responsible. Until we assess the influence variables other than nutrition exert on trace element concentrations, our reconstructions of paleodiets will be suspect. 相似文献

A series of experiments tested effects of excreted and bladder urine of group- and singly-caged female house mice (Mus musculus) on sexual maturation of young female mice caged alone or in groups of eight. Puberty was determined by vaginal smears. A maturation-delaying pherompne was present in bladder urine of all female mice and excreted urine of group-caged females, but not in excreted urine from singly-caged females. Test mice treated with bladder urine homogenized with urethras from singly-caged females matured at the same age as controls. Apparently the urethras or associated glands of singly-caged females produce a substance which deactivates the maturation-delaying pheromone contained in bladder urine. 相似文献

In experiments where female mouse urine or water was introduced on a Perspex block into a test arena, to which a group of male mice familiar with each other had been habituated, female urine was shown to cause a significant increase in the incidence of the social behaviour patterns: nose, investigate, ano-genital sniff and follow. The effect of pregnant and oestrous females on male testosterone and behaviour in the tammar wallaby

Tammar wallaby females (Macropus eugenii) are seasonally breeding marsupials with a post-partum oestrus after a highly synchronised birth period when testosterone concentrations rise in males. Chemical communication appears to be important for mating, as males show checking behaviour, sniffing the urogenital opening (UGO) and the pouch of females. This study investigates whether the presence of pregnant and oestrous females directly influences testosterone in males and if oestrous odours or secretion from the pouch or UGO are attractive. Concentrations of plasma testosterone were measured in males housed with pregnant and oestrous females during two consecutive cycles in the breeding season, and an artificially induced cycle in the non-breeding season. Males were also tested for their interest in swabs taken from the urogenital opening (UGO) or pouch of oestrous females. Testosterone increased sharply in males in the presence of pregnant and oestrous females during all cycles in both seasons, but there was no change when males were exposed to non-cycling females in lactational or seasonal diapause. Males had no preference for either oestrous or non-oestrous samples taken from the pouch or from the UGO from oestrous females. This study confirms that the increase in plasma testosterone in tammar males can be induced through the presence of pregnant and oestrous females, regardless of season and that the increase began when the females were in late-pregnancy. This confirms that the male's reproductive state is dependent on a signal from females and is not blocked through seasonal effects. 相似文献

Plasma progesterone concentrations and the occurrence of oestrous cycles were studied in isolated woolly opossums subsequently subjected to male influences during a 40-day period. Pairing (N = 48) or exposure to male urine (N = 15) resulted in all females exhibiting oestrous during the stimulation phase, providing evidence that the activation of ovarian activity in the woolly opossum involves pheromonal cues from males. The latency of occurrence of oestrous in stimulated females depended upon their sexual state before male stimulation. In anoestrous females, the mean latency was 20.7 +/- 0.9 days (N = 35), a value which agrees with the duration of the follicular phase. In females which first entered oestrous before male stimulation, the latency of induced oestrous was inversely correlated to the date of occurrence of the previous oestrous. The inter-oestrous interval was normal (38.1 +/- 1 days, N = 5) when females were in oestrous at the beginning of male stimulation. In contrast, the inter-oestrous interval was significantly shortened (28.7 +/- 2 days, N = 7) or lengthened (51.1 +/- 1.7 days, N = 16) depending on whether females were in the luteal or follicular phases at the beginning of male stimulation. During pairing several females became pregnant and gave birth 24 +/- 0.9 days (N = 13) after copulation. In the woolly opossum, the response to male influences involves mechanisms similar to those observed in eutherians and results in enhancement and synchronization of oestrous cycles in females. Pheromonal interactions could play an important role in synchronizing oestrous cycles in wild females during the dry season, a period when animals regroup to feed on spatially localized food resources. 相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) imparts to each mouse an individual urinary odor, called odortype, which reflects its MHC genotype. Perception of odortypes affects mate selection and embryonic implantation. Recent findings that odortypes tre expressed as early as one day of age suggested that they might already be expressed in utero. We now report that at 9–12 days of gestation, odortypes specified by paternal (non-maternal) MHC haplotypes become apparent in maternal urine. Thus, odortypes are expressed in utero, can be sensed even before birth, and may serve in familial identification and communication. 相似文献

Antiserum obtained by immunizing a goat with lacto-N-difucohexaose I, a Leb blood-group hapten, coupled to poly-L-lysine was used in a radioimmunoassay to detect Leb-active oligosaccharides (chiefly lacto-N-difucohexaose I) in urine of 138 pregnant and lactating women of different ABO and Lewis blood groups. Specificity of the method was determined by comparing inhibitory activities of 18 oligosaccharides. Only women who belonged to the Leb blood group excreted Leb-active oligosaccharides in urine. Leb-active oligosaccharides increase during pregnancy, reaching levels up to approximately 70 mumol lacto-N-difucohexaose I equivalents per pmol creatinine in the third trimester and early post-partum period. Excretion varies considerably but tends to be highest in those individuals who strongly express the Leb antigen on their red blood cells or who belong to blood group O. Leb-active oligosaccharides were detected in plasma of a few individuals but at concentrations 1000-fold lower than in urine. 相似文献

β-Glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31) has been purified from the urine of androgen-treated A/J female mice. This is a convenient starting material as the enzyme comprises 0.5 to 1.0% of total urinary proteins. Weekly injections of testosterone enanthate increased β-glucuronidase excretion from kidney into urine by approximately 300-fold. Unexpected urinary enzyme activity declined after six weekly treatments, but returned after the testosterone injections were discontinued. These observations suggest that testosterone influences not only the rate of β-glucuronidase synthesis but also the excretion of the enzyme into the urine. Other hormone regimens for achieving β-glucuronidase synthesis and excretion into urine are discussed. After concentrating the urine 10- to 12-fold, β-glucuronidase was isolated using two chromatography steps. Gel filtration on Bio-Gel A-0.5m resulted in a 16-fold purification of the enzyme and removed most of the major urinary proteins. Anion exchange on diethylaminoethyl-cellulose resulted in a further purification of β-glucuronidase by 12-fold. These two chromatography steps gave 190- to 200-fold increases of β-glucuronidase activity per milligram of protein and the enzyme electrophoresed as a single band in two native gels. However, analysis on sodium dodecyl sulfate gels revealed traces of protein smaller than the 70,000 molecular weight subunit of the enzyme. The β-glucuronidase isolated from urine had the same physical properties as the lysosomal form of the enzyme in mouse kidney. 相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate various programmes for synchronization of oestrus. The focus of the study was to evaluate rates of detection of oestrus, synchrony of oestrus, pregnancy rate, and effect of ovarian status at initiation of the programmes on rates of detection of oestrus and pregnancy rate. Spring-calving, lactating dairy cows (n = 2009) were allocated at random to one of six treatments: (1) A (n = 335), progestogen (controlled intravaginal drug release; CIDR) inserted per vaginum 10 d before breeding season for 8 d, 10 microg of buserelin at CIDR insertion, PGF2alpha treatment on the day prior to CIDR removal, and AI of cows detected in oestrus within 6 d after CIDR withdrawal; (2) B (n = 330), as in A, plus 1 mg of oestradiol benzoate i.m. 10 h post CIDR withdrawal; (3) C (n = 347), as in A, except buserelin was replaced by 10 mg of oestradiol benzoate; (4) D (n = 335), as in A, plus PGF2alpha and oestradiol benzoate at CIDR insertion; (5) E (n = 332), CIDR containing a 10 mg oestradiol benzoate capsule inserted per vaginum for 12 d; or (6) F (n = 330), as in E, plus PGF2alpha on the day prior to CIDR withdrawal. The oestrous detection rate (number of cows detected in oestrus within 6 days of CIDR withdrawal as a proportion of the number of cows submitted for synchronization of oestrus) and oestrous synchrony (oestrous detection rate within 2 d of CIDR withdrawal), respectively, were greater (P<0.05) following B (95.7% of 330, 98.7% of 316) compared with any of the other programmes for synchronization of oestrus (A: 87.5 of 335, 79.4% of 293; C: 86.7% of 347, 80.0% of 301; D: 90.1% of 335, 89.8% of 302; E: 74.4% of 332, 70.4% of 247; F: 76.4% of 330, 78.5% of 252). The oestrous detection rate was reduced (P<0.05) among cows in metoestrus administered E (64.0% of 50) relative to similar cows administered F (82.8% of 64). Pregnancy rate was greater (P<0.05) following B (57.9% of 330) than A (48.9% of 335, P = 0.06), C (43.2% of 347), E (40.0% of 332), and F (35.1% of 330) but not D (59.3% of 302), when based on those cows presented for oestrous synchronization programmes. In conclusion, 1 mg of oestradiol benzoate administered 10 h post CIDR withdrawal (B) resulted in the best overall oestrous detection, oestrous synchrony, and pregnancy rates, which would be beneficial to a fixed-time AI program. 相似文献

The patterns of oestrous cycles were examined in new strains of mice exhibiting a high (SHN) and a low (SLN) mammary tumour incidence. These mice originated from the same stock of Swiss albino mice. At the age of 3-4 months, SHN mice showed much longer cycles with continual dioestrous periods than SLN mice. The average lengths of cycles and dioestrous periods were, respectively, 8.3 +/- 0.3 and 6.0 +/- 0.4 days in SHN mice and 4.6 +/- 0.1 and 2.5 +/- 0.1 days in SLN mice. Furthermore, the distinct alteration in the patterns of cycles from SHN to SLN type was associated with complete reduction in mammary tumour incidence in highly inbred C3H/He female mice maintained by brother X sister mating with no selection for mammary tumourigenesis. The relation between the pattern of oestrous cycles and mammary tumourigenesis is discussed from the viewpoint of the endogenous hormonal milieu and the responsiveness of target organs. 相似文献

A series of experiments investigated masculine response potential in normal BDF1 female mice and in females who had been injected with 100 μg of testosterone propionate on the day of birth. Sixty-five percent of BDF1 females mounted females in estrus; ovariectomy lowered this response potential while injections of TP in adulthood raised masculine RP in both ovariectomized and intact females. Neonatally androgenized females with or without TP in adulthood exhibited the full range of masculine responses including the ejaculatory reflex. In mammals, intrinsic postzygotic isolation has been well studied in males but has been less studied in females, despite the fact that female gametogenesis and pregnancy provide arenas for hybrid sterility or inviability that are absent in males. Here, we asked whether inviability or sterility is observed in female hybrids of Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus, taxa which hybridize in nature and for which male sterility has been well characterized. We looked for parent‐of‐origin growth phenotypes by measuring adult body weights in F1 hybrids. We evaluated hybrid female fertility by crossing F1 females to a tester male and comparing multiple reproductive parameters between intrasubspecific controls and intersubspecific hybrids. Hybrid females showed no evidence of parent‐of‐origin overgrowth or undergrowth, providing no evidence for reduced viability. However, hybrid females had smaller litter sizes, reduced embryo survival, fewer ovulations, and fewer small follicles relative to controls. Significant variation in reproductive parameters was seen among different hybrid genotypes, suggesting that hybrid incompatibilities are polymorphic within subspecies. Differences in reproductive phenotypes in reciprocal genotypes were observed and are consistent with cyto‐nuclear incompatibilities or incompatibilities involving genomic imprinting. These findings highlight the potential importance of reduced hybrid female fertility in the early stages of speciation. 相似文献
