Fluctuating asymmetry, or random deviations from bilateral symmetry, has been widely used as a measure of developmental stability. The relationship between fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and allozymic heterozygosity was evaluated using 18 natural populations of pocket gophers ( Thomomys bottae ). Heterozygosity in local populations of pocket gophers ranges over more than an order of magnitude (1.5—18.4%), making this burrowing rodent particularly apt for such studies. Two measures of FA in mensural skull characters were examined: absolute deviations between left and right sides and the variance of signed differences. After log transformations, levels of FA among individuals and populations were not related to size. Repeated-measures analyses of variance showed that FA was significant relative to measurement error, both across populations and within them. Asymmetries of different characters were uncorrelated, despite positive significant correlations among the characters themselves. FA levels varied only slightly among populations of gophers, and this variation was not significant for most characters. FA levels of populations were not correlated with allozymic heterozygosity, and analyses of variance in FA employing heterozygosity were not significant. Heterozygosity levels in these rodents appear more strongly related to aspects of population history (especially effective size and gene flow) than to developmental stability. Because so many genomic and environmental factors can affect morphological variation, caution is needed in interpreting correlations between genetic and phenetic variation.  相似文献

Recent studies in the literature have appliedphylogenetic methods based on genetic distancesto set priorities for conservation of domesticanimal breeds. While these methods may beappropriate for between-species conservation, they are clearly inappropriate forwithin-species breed conservation, because theyignore within-breed variation. In this paper weshow the basic tools to analyse geneticdiversity in subdivided populations withinspecies, and illustrate the errors incurred byapplying methods based exclusively on geneticdistances. We also show that maximisation ofgenetic diversity (minimisation of coancestryor kinship) is equivalent to maximisation ofeffective population size, as in undividedpopulations, and derive a generalisation ofprevious equations for the prediction ofeffective size. Finally, we discuss thestrategies for conservation in the light of thetheory.  相似文献

Multiple mating has been suggested to benefit social insect queens because high genetic variation within colonies might decrease the load imposed by sterile diploid males, enhance resistance to parasites and pathogens, and lead to a more effective division of labour and/or a wider range of tolerable environmental conditions. We tested these hypotheses in the ant Lasius niger with three population samples from Switzerland and Sweden. We found no diploid males in young or mature colonies suggesting a lack of diploid male load. Colonies with multiply-mated queens were not larger nor did they produce more sexuals than colonies with singly-mated queens. We did find a significantly lower frequency of multiple mating among newly mated queens than among the queens heading mature colonies in one population sample (Switzerland 1997). However, this result was not repeated in the other study population, or in the following year in the Swiss population.  相似文献

The genetic structure of populations is an important determinant of the evolutionary potential of a species. Colonizing plants tend to be characterized by low within- and high among-population variability. Genetic differentiation of both floral traits and isozymes was studied in six populations of wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum). Evidence for differentiation in both sets of traits was found, but patterns of differentiation of floral traits did not coincide with isozyme differentiation. Contrary to most colonizing species, wild radish showed high within- and only moderate among-population variability at isozyme loci. In addition, levels of differentiation did not correspond to geographic distance between the populations. These results are likely due at least in part to the self-incompatibility system of this species, long-distance movement of large numbers of wild radish seeds by humans, and introgression from cultivated radish (R. sativus).  相似文献

Populations forced through bottlenecks typically lose genetic variation and exhibit inbreeding depression. ‘Genetic rescue’ techniques that introduce individuals from outbred populations can be highly effective in reversing the deleterious effects of inbreeding, but have limited application for the majority of endangered species, which survive only in a few bottlenecked populations. We tested the effectiveness of using highly inbred populations as donors to rescue two isolated and bottlenecked populations of the South Island robin (Petroica australis). Reciprocal translocations significantly increased heterozygosity and allelic diversity. Increased genetic diversity was accompanied by increased juvenile survival and recruitment, sperm quality, and immunocompetence of hybrid individuals (crosses between the two populations) compared with inbred control individuals (crosses within each population). Our results confirm that the implementation of ‘genetic rescue’ using bottlenecked populations as donors provides a way of preserving endangered species and restoring their viability when outbred donor populations no longer exist.  相似文献

The association between population dynamics and genetic variability is of fundamental importance for both evolutionary and conservation biology. We combined long-term population monitoring and molecular genetic data from 123 offspring and their parents at 28 microsatellite loci to investigate changes in genetic diversity over 14 cohorts in a small and relatively isolated population of mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) during a period of demographic increase. Offspring heterozygosity decreased while parental genetic similarity and inbreeding coefficients (F(IS) ) increased over the study period (1995-2008). Immigrants introduced three novel alleles into the population and matings between residents and immigrants produced more heterozygous offspring than local crosses, suggesting that immigration can increase population genetic variability. The population experienced genetic drift over the study period, reflected by a reduced allelic richness over time and an 'isolation-by-time' pattern of genetic structure. The temporal decline of individual genetic diversity despite increasing population size probably resulted from a combination of genetic drift due to small effective population size, inbreeding and insufficient counterbalancing by immigration. This study highlights the importance of long-term genetic monitoring to understand how demographic processes influence temporal changes of genetic diversity in long-lived organisms.  相似文献

The relative effects of purging of the genetic load versus thefixation of deleterious alleles, under inbreeding, will influencea population's probability of extinction. The relative contributionof these two phenomena is expected to depend upon the rate ofinbreeding. A further complication is due to the fact that a purgingof the genetic load in one environment does not necessarily implya purging of the genetic load in other environments. To addressthese two issues, we compare fitness and genetic load in populationsexperiencing similar levels of inbreeding, but occurring as either ashort-term bottleneck or as a consequence of long-term reducedpopulation size, over a range of environments. Inbred populationshave consistently lower fitness than outbred populations acrossall environments tested. However, the bottlenecked populationssuffer less inbreeding depression for a given level of inbreeding, whether or not challenged by novel environments, than populationskept at a constant small size. The results of this study demonstratethat populations initiated from a small number of founders are ableto recover fitness and survive novel environmental challenges, provided that habitat is available for rapid population growth.  相似文献

The genetic structure of five types of Taihu pig (Erhualian, Middle Meishan, Small Meishan, Mizhu and Shawutou), Jiangquhai and Dongchuan pigs in China were investigated, by means of 27 microsatellite markers proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, International Society for Animal Genetics (FAO-ISAG). The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test indicated that genetic drift had occurred in these populations, which may be caused by founder effects, intensive selection and close breeding. Genetic heterozygosity and the effective number of alleles per population were calculated, and showed that the genetic variability of the Jiangquhai pig was the largest, while the Small Meishan had the lowest. Genetic differentiation was within each population as shown by the fixation index (F(ST)=0.18). Both a neighbour-joining (NJ) tree constructed from Nei's standard genetic distance and principal component analysis based on allele frequencies can distinguish types of Taihu pig from the other two breeds. Among Taihu pig populations, Erhualian and Mizhu grouped into one branch, while Middle Meishan, Small Meishan and Shawutou clustered as another branch. By including previously published data on European pigs reported, we confirmed that Chinese indigenous pigs and European pigs have diverged into two distinct groups.  相似文献

Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were collected from 17 reservoirs on three islands in Hawaii, USA. Genetic and life history traits for adult females from these populations were used to evaluate hypotheses concerning short-term evolutionary divergence of populations recently established from a common ancestral source. The effects of founder events and drift on genetic variability and population differentiation were also examined. Significant differences in life history characteristics, allele frequencies, and multi-locus heterozygosities (H) were found among fish populations collected from different reservoirs and between reservoirs classified as stable or fluctuating on the basis of temporal fluctuation in water level. Females from stable reservoirs exhibited greater standard length (35.1 vs 32.8 mm), lower fecundity (11.9 vs 15.2 embryos), lower reproductive allocation (18.2% vs 22.8%), but larger mean embryo size (1.95 vs 1.67 mg) than females from fluctuating reservoirs. Consistency in means among replicates of each reservoir class and concordance in direction and magnitude of differences reported here and results of sampling conducted from these same locations 10 years previously (Stearns, 1983a) suggest that ecological factors intrinsic to these two environments are important in determing population life history traits. Females from stable reservoirs exhibited lower heterozygosity than females from fluctuating reservoirs (0.134 vs 0.158, respectively). Levels and direction od differences in heterozygosity, the high proportion of polymorphic loci and lack of fixation of alternative alleles argue against a purely stochastic explanation for genetic and life history variation among reservoir populations. Levels of genetic variability and interpopulation differentiation were similar to those observed in mainland populations of this species. A high proportion of the genetic diversity was apportioned between populations and within populations due to differences between juveniles and adults. Significant genotypic differences between adult and juvenile age classes suggest that the genetic divergence of local populations may occur over short periods of time.  相似文献

Effects of the northern pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) on surface soilcharacteristics were examined at the alpinesite of Niwot Ridge, CO. We measured erosionof soil from gopher mounds and compared thecharacteristics of gopher mound (disturbed) andundisturbed soils in two major plant communitytypes. Our measurements of erosion indicatelong-term susceptibility of gopher-disturbedsoils to redistribution by water and/or wind inthis ecosystem. Ecosystem heterogeneityintroduced by the gopher is reflected insignificantly lower SOM in gopher mounds thanin surrounding undisturbed soils, acharacteristic which appears to be causallyassociated with other effects of gopherdisturbance including changes in soil textureand significantly lower clays, total C, totalN, total P, and labile P. In contrast toplant-available P, NO3 was higherand steadily increased for the short term in both gopher mound soils and those beneath the mounds. These pools of NO3 thendecreased to pre-disturbance levels by thefollowing spring. Collectively our resultsindicate that, through the physicalmanipulation of soil and subsequent effects onsoil resources, the northern pocket gopherfunctions as an agent of increased ecosystemheterogeneity and soil mass and nutrientredistribution at Niwot Ridge.  相似文献

Pitch pine, Pinus rigida Mill., is a rare species in Canada, existing as a disjunct population in the St. Lawrence River Valley in eastern Ontario and two northern outlier stands in southern Quebec along Canada's southern border with the United States. Reproductive and genetic characteristics of these small, scattered stands were investigated to develop a foundation for management and restoration in the event of range expansion northwards under anticipated climate warming. Seed yields and seed quality appear to be comparable to other eastern conifers, and to pitch pine at the center of its geographic range. For seed and seedling growth traits, most of the variation was attributable to differences among trees within stands and, to a lesser extent, among stands within a population; whereas the population effect was non-significant. For reproductive traits, such as numbers of filled and empty seeds per cone, reproductive efficiency, and inbreeding estimates, high levels of variation (ranging from 26% to 33%) were found among stands, suggesting that stand structural features, such as stand size and tree density within stands, play an important role in pollination environment and overall reproductive success. Estimates of genetic diversity at 32 allozyme gene loci indicate that these small, isolated stands have maintained relatively high levels of genetic diversity compared with populations at the center of its geographic range, and also relative to other widely dispersed eastern conifers. The relatively high levels of viable seed production and genetic diversity in native pitch pine populations indicate that native Canadian populations may be suitable seed sources for species restoration and range expansion in Canada.  相似文献

Inbreeding is expected to decrease the heritability within populations. However, results from empirical studies are inconclusive. In this study, we investigated the effects of three breeding treatments (fast and slow rate of inbreeding - inbred to the same absolute level - and a control) on heritability, phenotypic, genetic and environmental variances of sternopleural bristle number in Drosophila melanogaster. Heritability, and phenotypic, genetic and environmental variances were estimated in 10 replicate lines within each of the three treatments. Standard least squares regression models and Bayesian methods were used to analyse the data. Heritability and additive genetic variance within lines were higher in the control compared with both inbreeding treatments. Heritabilities and additive genetic variances within lines were higher in slow compared with fast inbred lines, indicating that slow inbred lines retain more evolutionary potential despite the same expected absolute level of inbreeding. The between line variance was larger with inbreeding and more than twice as large in the fast than in the slow inbred lines. The different pattern of redistribution of genetic variance within and between lines in the two inbred treatments cannot be explained invoking the standard model based on selective neutrality and additive gene action. Environmental variances were higher with inbreeding, and more so with fast inbreeding, indicating that inbreeding and the rate of inbreeding affect environmental sensitivity. The phenotypic variance decreased with inbreeding, but was not affected by the rate of inbreeding. No inbreeding depression for mean sternopleural bristle number was observed in this study. Considerable variance between lines in additive genetic variance within lines was observed, illustrating between line variation in evolutionary potential.  相似文献

No significant relationships were observed between white muscle RNA concentration and growth rate in adult cod. The use of nucleic acid concentration to estimate growth rate in wild populations of cod should be limited to larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

We examined, through allozyme electrophoresis, the genetic structure of populations of the acridid grasshopper Dichroplus pratensis from two chromosomal races (Northern and Southern) and their hybrid zone in Argentina. No fixed alleles for any particular race were found, although genetic differentiation among parental races was significant (0 = 0.044, 95% CI: 0.004-0.068). Hybrid populations are genetically more similar to the Southern race (0 = 0.008, 95% CI: -0.005-0.018) than to Northern ones (0 = 0.018, 95% CI: 0.002-0.030). Differential viability or fertility of hybrids, or asymmetry in mating preferences in favour of one particular cross would cause a higher proportion of matings between hybrid individuals and those from the Southern race. This would explain the high genetic similarity between those groups, in spite of their geographical vicinity with northern race populations.  相似文献

According to theory, drift load in randomly mating populations is determined by past population size, because enhanced genetic drift in small populations causes accumulation and fixation of recessive deleterious mutations of small effect. In contrast, segregating load due to mutations of low frequency should decline in smaller populations, at least when mutations are highly recessive and strongly deleterious. Strong local selection generally reduces both types of load. We tested these predictions in 13 isolated, outcrossing populations of Arabidopsis lyrata that varied in population size and plant density. Long-term size was estimated by expected heterozygosity at 20 microsatellite loci. Segregating load was assessed by comparing performance of offspring from selfings versus within-population crosses. Drift load was the heterosis effect created by interpopulation outbreeding. Results showed that segregating load was unrelated to long-term size. However, drift load was significantly higher in populations of small effective size and low density. Drift load was mostly expressed late in development, but started as early as germination and accumulated thereafter. The study largely confirms predictions of theory and illustrates that mutation accumulation can be a threat to natural populations.  相似文献

The effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) and improvements in peak oxygen consumption ( peak) was examined in sedentary middle-aged men. The HRV and absolute and relative peak of training (n = 19) and control (n = 15) subjects were assessed before and after a 24-session moderate intensity exercise training programme. Results indicated that with exercise training there was a significantly increased absolute and relative peak (P < 0.005) for the training group (12% and 11% respectively) with no increase for the control group. The training group also displayed a significant reduction in resting heart rate; however, HRV remained unchanged. The trained subjects were further categorized into high (n = 5) and low (n = 5) HRV groups and changes in peak were compared. Improvements in both absolute and relative peak were significantly greater (P > 0.005) in the high HRV group (17% and 20% respectively) compared to the low HRV group (6% and 1% respectively). The groups did not differ in mean age, pretraining oxygen consumption, or resting heart rate. These results would seem to suggest that a short aerobic training programme does not alter HRV in middle-aged men. Individual differences in HRV, however, may be associated with peak response to aerobic training.  相似文献

Genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) is subject to intensive investigation in human and livestock populations since it can potentially reveal aspects of a population history, permit to date them and help in fine-gene mapping. The most commonly used measure of LD between multiallelic loci is the coefficient D''. Data based on D'' were recently published in humans, livestock and model animals. However, the properties of this coefficient are not well understood. Its sampling distribution and variance has received recent attention, but its expected behaviour with respect to genetic or physical distance remains unknown. Using stochastic simulations of populations having a finite size, we show that D'' fits an exponential function having two parameters of simple biological interpretation: the residual value (rs) towards which D'' tends as the genetic distance increases and the distance R at which this value is reached. Properties of this model are evaluated as a function of the inbreeding coefficient (F). It was found that R and rs increase when F increases. The proposed model offers opportunities to better understand the patterns and the origins of LD in different populations and along different chromosomes.  相似文献
