SUMMARY

This study was designed to investigate the apparent loss from the water column in Lake McIlwaine This study of significant quantities of reactive phosphorus. The Total Reactive Phosphorus mass-balance for the lake for 1977/78 was calculated, and both in situ and laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the effect of the lake sediments on the phosphorus loading of the lake. The experimental results showed that both uptake and release of phosphorus occurs in the lake, but that uptake of phosphorus by the sediments was by far the dominant process, thus accounting for the observed loss of phosphorus from the water column. The availability of the bound phosphorus for algal growth was also studied and it is suggested that algal uptake of bound phosphorus is possible. Various factors affecting phosphorus uptake by the sediments are discussed.  相似文献

A bioenergetic model, developed by M. Thellier, was applied to the 32P-phosphate uptake data obtained with blue green algae and allowed the determination of a threshold concentration for the absorption of phosphate. Data obtained during an algal bloom of Oscillatoria rubescens showed that algal growth ceased when the phosphate concentration in the lake dropped below this threshold value. The resulting starvation led to an increase in the permeability of the membrane for phosphate.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of species changes in lake ecosystems following biomanipulation measures is of paramount importance in view of water quality management. The temporal variation of phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll-a and transparency as Secchi depth measurements are studied in the Lake Bleiswijkse Zoom, The Netherlands, with a comprehensive structural dynamic model. In the formulation of the biological model, phytoplankton as several species, zooplankton, detritus, planktivores and benthivores, and piscivores are considered to be major contributing state variables for the model. The primary goal of this paper is to describe the possible impacts of several environmental scenarios on chlorophyll-a biomass qualitatively as it would help lake and environmental managers and relevant authorities elucidate the processes of eutrophication and biomanipulation in a broad way. Some of the scenarios that have been studied by this model are: (1) The effect of fixed stoichiometry in terms of internal nitrogen and phosphorus that are tied up within algal cells; (2) the effects of external phosphorus limitation; (3) light limitation and external nitrogen limitation on algal growth; (4) probable consequences that have taken place within the chlorophyll-a biomass due to change in biomasses of various aquatic organisms; and (5) possible changes of chlorophyll-a biomass due to higher temperatures caused by global warming.  相似文献

Phosphate uptake and utilization by bacteria and algae   总被引:6,自引:2,他引:4

Bacterial uptake of inorganic phosphate (closely investigated in Escherichia coli) is maintained by two different uptake systems. One (Pst system) is Pi-repressible and used in situations of phosphorus deficiency. The other system (Pit system) is constitutive. The Pit system also takes part in the phosphate exchange process where orthophosphate is continuously exchanged between the cell and the surrounding medium.Algal uptake mechanisms are less known. The uptake capacity increases during starvation but no clearly defined transport systems have been described. Uptake capacity seems to be regulated by internal phosphorus pools, e.g., polyphosphates. In mixed algal and bacterial populations, bacteria generally seem to be more efficient in utilizing low phosphate concentrations. The second half of this paper discusses how bacteria and algae can share limiting amounts of phosphate provided that the bacteria have pronouncedly higher affinity for phosphate. Part of the solution to this problem may be that bacteria are energy-limited rather than phosphate-limited and dependent on algal organic exudates for their energy supply. The possible phosphate exchange mechanism so convincingly demonstrated in Escherichia coli is here suggested to play a key role for the flux of phosphorus between bacteria and algae. Such a mechanism can also be used to explain the rapid phosphate exchange between the particulate and the dissolved phase which always occurs in short-term 32P-uptake experiments in lake waters.  相似文献

1. We explored patterns of limnological variables (physical, chemical and biological) with relation to landscape position (expressed as lake order) in 86 study lakes located on shield bedrock in south‐central Ontario, Canada. 2. Using anova s with lake order as the categorical variable, landscape position explained significant amounts of variation in major ion chemistry, physical and catchment characteristics, hypolimnetic oxygen, and community composition in algal (diatom, chrysophyte) and invertebrate (chironomid) assemblages preserved in surficial sediments. Several nutrient variables (TP, total phosphorus and TN, total nitrogen) and dissolved organic carbon did not have significant relationships with lake order. 3. The strongest relationships with lake order (as a fraction of variation explained in anova s) included silica concentrations (r2 = 0.40) and SO4 (r2 = 0.29) concentrations, surface area (r2 = 0.50) and hypolimnetic oxygen (r2 = 0.29). 4. Bedrock geology (carbonate metasedimentary versus non‐carbonate bedrock) had strong influences on spatial gradients of pH and major ion chemistry. It was difficult to separate geological influences from spatial influences on limnological variables in this study, as drainage patterns in the region are highly influenced by surface features of underlying geological formations because of the very thin glacial till or exposed bedrock that exists in most catchments. 5. Patterns of limnological variables indicated that low‐order, headwater lakes had the lowest concentrations of major ions, and, from algal inferences of pH change, had been most susceptible to acidic deposition. High‐order, downstream lakes were larger and deeper, and had higher concentrations of hypolimnetic oxygen, indicating that optimal lake trout habitat was primarily located in high‐order lakes. 6. Variance partitioning analyses indicated that lake order as a metric of landscape position explained comparable portions of community variation in algal and invertebrate assemblages compared with geographic position (latitude, longitude) and Cartesian coordinate position (e.g. x, y, x2, y2, etc.) metrics. Lake order explained more community variation in chironomid assemblages compared with other landscape metrics, possibly because of the strong relationships between lake order and lake morphometry variables.  相似文献

The presence of up to 500 μg sulfur·l?1 of an equimolar mixture of cysteine and methionine had virtually no effect on the SO42- uptake rate of Navicula pelliculosa, (Bréb.) Hilse whereas the rate of Ankistrodesmus falcatus (Corda) Ralfs was decreased by the presence of 500 μg S· l?1 and Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngbye) Bréb. by 50 μg S·l?1. Primary productivity in these axenic cultures was affected (decreased) only in A. falcatus. The C:S uptake ratio was lowest in N. pelliculosa and highest in A. falcatus. Considering these species as representative of groups of naturally occurring algae, patterns of SO42- uptake and primary productivity in a eutrophic and a moderately oligotrophic lake reflected the results of the algal culturing experiments: SO42- uptake rates, relative to primary productivity, were higher in the presence of diatoms and bluegreen algae and lower when green algae were present; the addition of the cysteine I methionine mixture to the lake waters decreased the rate of microplankton SO42- uptake in correlation with the makeup of the algal community; primary productivity decreased upon the addition of cysteine I methionine when green algae were relatively abundant. It is concluded that, in most fresh water systems, the effects of organic sulfur pollution on algal SO42- uptake and primary productivity are insignificant as compared to other ecological changes that occur due to that pollution.  相似文献

Mn, Fe, Cu, and Cd concentrations are reported for Lake Vanda, a closed-basin, meromictic, Antarctic lake and for its single major inflow, the Onyx River. Trace metal distributions in the upper lake and annual metal fluxes from the Onyx River were used to estimate chemical residence times in the mixed zone above the chemocline. Residence times, based on total metal loads, were 9.4 years for Mn; 1.4 years for iron; 174 years for copper; and 82 years for cadmium. Controls on the steady state concentrations of metals in this system are likely to include: particle settling of Fe and Mn; scavenging of minor elements on metal oxide surfaces; sulfide precipitation from the anoxic brine; and possibly uptake of metals on the surface of benthic algal mats. Model calculations show that metal removal by sinking phytoplankton can account for only a small fraction of the annual loss.  相似文献

The effect of weather on the eutrophication of a shallow lake was estimated by a hydrodynamic lake model coupled with a simple water quality module. The model was applied to Lake Villikkalanjärvi in southern Finland. This shallow, agriculturally loaded lake may stratify during warm and calm periods in summer and as a result oxygen is often consumed from the hypolimnion, causing high internal loading of phosphorus. Vertical mixing and temperature distribution in the lake were simulated by a one-dimensional, horizontally integrated hydrodynamic model. State variables included in the water quality model were dissolved reactive phosphorus, chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen. The model was first calibrated against observations from 1989 and 1990. Thereafter, simulations were carried out using weather data from the years 1961 to 1988. The results indicated that warm summer periods may cause high chlorophyll a concentrations due to high internal loading. In four years with exceptionally warm summers the model predicted maximum chlorophyll a concentrations almost twice as high as in years without remarkable internal loading. The model simulates accurately temperature and mixing but the reliability of water quality predictions could be improved by adding more factors regulating algal biomass and sediment phosphorus release.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal distributions of Chironomus crassicaudatus, Chironomus decorus, Glyptotendipes paripes, Cryptochironomus fulvus and Tanypodinae midge larvae and selected associated environmental variables (physico-chemical variables of water, sediment chemistry and algal composition) were studied for one year in natural Lake Monroe and man-made Konomac Lake in central Florida. Ordination analysis (CCA with variation partitioning) showed that in each lake, sediment variables were the most important environmental variables. However, the most important proportion of species variability in pooled data from both lakes was explained by lake-specific combinations of water, sediment and algal variables. Chironomid larvae were ordinated with increasing depth as follows: G. paripes, C. fulvus, C. crassicaudatus, Tanypodinae, and C. decorus. This trend was similar for both lakes individually as well as for the pooled data. As water depth increased, organic matter content and associated metals concentrations in sediment increased. Glyptotendipes paripes displayed significant, negative correlation with water depth and sediment total carbon content, while C. decorus showed a significant positive correlation with these variables; C. crassicaudatus did not show any significant correlation with either of these variables. The algal composition in the pooled data from both lakes was another important factor affecting the larval distributions. The proportion of G. paripes and C. decorus larvae increased with filamentous algal density, and C. crassicaudatus larvae with increasing Cyanobacteria. Although both study lakes were very shallow, the effect of water depth (alone or shared with environmental variables) on chironomid larval community composition was substantially higher than the seasonality (sampling month) effect.  相似文献

Although iron is a key nutrient for algal growth just as are nitrogen and phosphorus in aquatic systems, the effects of iron on algal growth are not well understood. The growth characteristics of two species of cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix agardhii, in iron-limited continuous cultures were investigated. The relationships between dissolved iron concentration, cell quota of iron, and population growth rate were determined applying two equations, Monod’s and Droop’s equations. Both species produced hydroxamate-type siderophores, but neither species produced catechol-type siderophores. The cell quota of nitrogen for both M. aeruginosa and P. agardhii decreased with decreasing cell quota of iron. The cell quota of phosphorus for M. aeruginosa decreased with decreasing cell quota of iron, whereas those for P. agardhii did not decrease. Iron uptake rate was measured in ironlimited batch cultures under different degrees of iron starvation. The results of the iron uptake experiments suggest that iron uptake rates are independent of the cell quota of iron for M. aeruginosa and highly dependent on the cell quota for P. agardhii. A kinetic model under iron limitation was developed based on the growth characteristics determined in our study, and this model predicted accurately the algal population growth and iron consumption. The model simulation suggested that M. aeruginosa is a superior competitor under iron limitation. The differences in growth characteristics between the species would be important determinants of the dominance of these algal species.  相似文献

Decomposition of natural populations of Lake Mendota phytoplankton dominated by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) was monitored by using oxygen uptake and disappearance of chlorophyll, algal volume (fluorescence microscopy), particulate protein, particulate organic carbon, and photosynthetic ability (14CO2 up-take). In some experiments, decomposition of 14C-labeled axenic cultures of Anabaena sp. was also measured. In addition to decomposition, mineralization of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus were followed in some experiments. Decomposition could be described as a first-order process, and the rate of decomposition was similar to that found by others using pure cultures of eucaryotic algae. Nitrogen and phosphorus never limited the decomposition process, even when the lake water was severely limited in soluble forms of these nutrients. This suggests that the bacteria responsible for decomposition can obtain all of their key nutrients for growth from the blue-green algal cells. Filtration of lake water through plankton netting that removed up to 90% of the algal biomass usually did not cause a similar decrease in oxygen demand, suggesting that most of the particulate organic matter used for respiration of the decomposing bacteria was in a small-particle fraction. Short-term oxygen demand correlated well with the particulate chlorophyll concentration of the sample, and a relationship was derived that could be used to predict community respiration of the lake from chlorophyll concentration. Kinetic analysis showed that not all analyzed components disappeared at the same rate during the decomposition process. The relative rates of decrease of the measured parameters were as follows: photosynthetic ability > algal volume > particulate chlorophyll > particulate protein. Decomposition of 14C-labeled Anabaena occurred at similar rates with aerobic epilimnetic water and with anaerobic sediment, but was considerably slower with anaerobic hypolimnetic water. Of the various genera present in the lake, Aphanizomenon and Anabaena were more sensitive to decomposition than was Microcystis. In addition to providing a general picture of the decomposition process, the present work relates to other work on sedimentation to provide a detailed picture of the fate of blue-green algal biomass in a eutrophic lake ecosystem.  相似文献

The rates of uptake of a range of forms of nitrogenous nutrients were measured in cultures of Pfiesteria piscicida and Pfiesteria shumwayae maintained at varying physiological states. The measured rates of dissolved N uptake under some conditions approached the rates of N uptake that are achieved through phagotrophy. Rates of dissolved N uptake by P. piscicida contributed <10% of the cellular N of flagellated cells feeding on algae, but were equal to or greater than phagotrophic N acquisition in cells recently removed from fish cultures. Specific N uptake rates (V, h−1) were higher for cells that were maintained on algal prey for long periods (months) than those that were grown with live fish. However, rates of N uptake on a cellular basis for cells grown on or recently removed from fish were comparable to those maintained on algal prey, likely reflecting differences in the sizes of cells of different physiological condition. Preferences for form of N generally followed a decreasing trend of amino acids > urea > NH4+ > NO3. Nitrate consistently was not a preferred form of N. Although Pfiesteria spp. are often found in eutrophic environments, the relationship between Pfiesteria spp. and nutrient availability is likely to be primarily indirect, mediated through the production of various prey on which Pfiesteria spp. feed. These findings also confirm, however, that when dissolved N concentrations are elevated, they can contribute to the supplemental nutrition of these cells, and thus may provide a significant source of N to Pfiesteria spp. in nature.  相似文献

The photosynthetic activity of different algal communities at the outer edge of an Equisetum fluviatile L. stand in an oligotrophic lake (Pääjärvi, in southern Finland) was investigated. Production by the algal communities was measured simultaneously using a modified 14C-method, and the results were related to the volume of algae and the available irradiance. The relative production rate (P/B quotient) of phytoplankton was ca. 3 × that of epiphyton and ca. 20 × that of epipelon. Epiphyton productivity remained almost constant although the algal volume varied greatly, suggesting that the surface layer of the algal community was mainly responsible for the photosynthetic activity. In the littoral area (at 1 m depth) primary production/m2 of lake surface by phytoplankton, epiphyton and epipelon was similar but in the littoriprofundal area (2–4 m) phytoplankton production was twice that of epipelon. Primary productivity of epiphyton and epipelon/m2 of substratum was about equal to phytoplankton productivity/m3 of water at the same irradiance. This relation provided a means of estimating the relative contributions of the different algal communities to the total algal production in the lake.  相似文献

Biosorption of Heavy Metals by Marine Algae   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The ability of four different algae (three brown and one red) that have not been previously studied to adsorb Cr3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions was investigated. The metal uptake was dependent on the type of biosorbent, with different accumulation affinities towards the tested elements. The HCl-treated biomass decreased the metal biosorptive capacity particularly in the case of Cr3 adsorption with Laurencia obtusa. The extent of uptake of the different metals with the tested algae was assessed under different conditions such as pH, time of algal residence in solution with the metal, and concentration of algal biomass. The rate of uptake of the different metals was very fast in the first 2 h; thereafter the increase in metal uptake was insignificant. The amount of the metal uptake (5–15 mg range) increased steeply by increasing the weight of the biomass. An exception was L. obtusa, where a parallel increase of the uptake of different metals was observed on increasing the algal mass from 5 to 50 mg. SUMMARY. 1. The hypothesis that dissolved humic material (DHM) stimulates bacterial involvement in phosphorus transformations and may thus lead to decreased accessibility of phosphorus to algae was investigated by studying three small forest lakes in southern Finland representing a wide range of concentrations of DHM. 2. Other chemical differences between the three lakes were slight, although the most humic lake exhibited higher concentrations of total phosphorus and of molybdate-reactive phosphorus. Bacterial biomass did not differ significantly between the lakes, but algal biomass was significantly lower at higher DHM concentrations. Consequently the ratio of algal biomass to bacterial biomass was significantly lower in the most humic lake. 3. Uptake of phosphorus from added 33PO4 was partitioned between algal and bacterial size fractions by differential filtration. No significant variation between lakes was found in the proportion of particulate 33P recovered from the algal fraction. 4. Turnover times for phosphate were significantly longer in the most humic lake and also showed lower variability. In general turnover times were long in comparison with values reported from many other lakes. Only briefly in mid summmer did turnover times in two of the lakes shorten to values which would indicate that demand for phosphate was outstripping supply. 5. Short-term storage of samples from the most humic lake stimulated biological incorporation of 33P, but additions of nitrogen and iron had little effect on phosphate uptake. 6. In these small forest lakes it is probable that no single nutrient consistently limits plankton development. Since no evidence was found that DHM shifts the balance of plankton phosphate uptake away from algae towards bacteria, the influence of DHM on phosphorus transformations may rather be through chemical regulation of free phosphate availability.  相似文献

Bacterial metabolism of algal extracellular carbon   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Measurements of microbial utilization of extracellular organic carbon (EOC) released by phytoplankton commonly consider only EOC fractions subject to rapid uptake. Questions remain whether other EOC fractions are metabolized, what portion is labile, and with what assimilation efficiency this carbon substrate is utilized. 14C-EOC was prepared by incubation of the natural mixed planktonic community from an oligotrophic lake with H14CO3 in the light. 14C-EOC which was not rapidly removed by heterotrophs remained in solution and was isolated by filtration. This residual EOC was inoculated with lake microheterotrophs in laboratory microcosms, and utilization kinetics were determined through long-term assays of cumulative 14CO2 production. Time-courses for 14CO2 production were consistent for all assays and were well described by a deterministic mixed-order degradation model. On twelve sampling occasions, from 29% to 76% of residual 14C-EOC was labile to further metabolism by lake heterotrophs. First-order rate constants for EOC utilization showed a mode of 0.05 to 0.15 per day. From 33% to 78% of gross 14C-EOC uptake was respired (mean 50%), indicating appreciable return of algal EOC to the pelagic food web as microbial biomass.Contribution No. 596, W. K. SUMMARY 1. The strong stabilising effect of increased submerged macrophytes (charophytes) and benthivorous fish reduction on the clear water state was shown for shallow Lake Veluwe and Lake Wolderwijd. 2. The first two links in the chain of relationships from external phosphorus (P) loading to in‐lake total‐P concentrations to chlorophyll a concentrations to water transparency, showed a significant correlation with the areal fraction of coverage with charophytes. Higher coverages lead to (i) lower ratios of the in‐lake total‐P concentration compared with the volume weighted average concentration in the inlet water, indicating a higher retention of P in the presence of charophytes (ii) lower chlorophyll a to total‐P ratios, indicating a positive effect of charophytes on top‐down control of algae, and (iii) higher water transparency because of lower algal turbidity. Transparency further improved as a result of benthivorous fish reduction and a significant positive correlation between non‐algal turbidity and benthivorous fish biomass. 3. A model was developed taking into account the inherent variability in precipitation and uncertainties in the empirical relationships determining phosphorus export from stream catchments and other sources and eutrophication variables in the receiving lakes. The model was used to compute (i) probability distributions for in‐lake total‐P, chlorophyll a and Secchi Disc transparency in relation to the coverage with charophytes and benthivorous fish biomass, and (ii) exceedence probabilities with respect to critical values for in‐lake total‐P and water transparency for several management scenarios. 4. The effects of an expected rise in external nutrient loading on the in‐lake total‐P and chlorophyll a concentrations and on water transparency can be compensated for by two proposed control measures: (i) extended treatment at a waste water treatment plant directly discharging into Lake Veluwe, and (ii) diverting the outlet of a stream draining a catchment with high fertilisation. The minimal internal charophyte coverage needed to sufficiently stabilise the clear water state and to meet with the objective of a summer mean water transparency of at least 1 m was estimated at well over 30% of the lake area, while the benthivorous fish stock should be maintained at the present level of c. 20 kg ha?1.  相似文献

The population of Stephanodiscus rotula in Rostherne Mere (Cheshire, UK) was studied during the spring of 1996 using light microscopy, hydrochemical analyses and scanning electron microscopy X-ray microanalysis (SEM XRMA). Data obtained were statistically analysed to reveal relationships between the elements within the cells and in the lake water. The results confirmed that algal biomass production was mainly controlled by availability of Si. The depletion of ambient Si coincided with changes in the intracellular elemental composition, particularly a considerable reduction of intracellular Si whose depletion was also reflected in changes of intracellular elemental correlations and ratios. A simple structural model of elemental relationships in S. rotula cells is proposed to explain the pattern of intracellular elemental associations. This model can be used as a reference for species response to changes in environmental parameters. S. rotula provided a significant contribution to overall biogeochemical cycling due to the removal of nutrients from the water column and transporting them to bottom sediments following the culmination of the bloom. The role of S. rotula was particularly prominent in the biogeochemical cycle of silicon, as the diatom’s spring growth may account for more than 20% of its total annual loss to bottom sediments.  相似文献

The green alga Botryococcus is an important component of the phytoplankton in lake sediments from the Rotliegend of Central Europe. The first microscopic fossils from the Saar‐Nahe Basin that can be assigned to this genus are described and illustrated here. Their distribution at various stratigraphic levels shows that the primary production of the lakes was at least partially controlled by these green algae. The frequency of fossils in the sediments is correlated with grain size, which varied with the depositional environment. Their abundance is greater in sediments deposited in shallow water, especially in small lakes and in the littoral environments of larger lakes. Sediments of deep‐water lake bottoms contain only minor amounts of algal remains. The abundance of kerogen originating from phytoplankton and occurrences of Botryococcus fossils are correlated in these lake deposits.  相似文献

The polymictic properties of Lake Müggelsee, a eutrophic shallow lake in Berlin, are described by the water column stability (N 2) and gradients in saturation of oxygen at the deepest site of the lake (7.5 m). Mixing and stratification changed irregularly up to 7 times during the vegetation season (April to September), as was indicated by all of the stratification parameters. Thermally stable conditions generally lasted 1–2 weeks. A maximum of 5 weeks stratification was observed in 1982.In order to investigate the response of algal development, the internal rates of change of the dominant algal species in the lake during the vegetation period were estimated from weekly measurements of phytoplankton biomass from 1980 to 1990. The necessity taking a mixed sample in a shallow lake is discussed. The polymictic properties favoured the development of specific blue-green algal species; there dominance was also favoured by the trophic conditions. Among the dominant blue-greens the growth of Limnothrix redekei was independent of polymixis whereas stratification supported the starting conditions for the summer blue-greens Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii. After these algae reached a distinct level of biomass, they grew under mixing as well as under stratified conditions. For the development of solitary centric diatoms during summer regulation by growth restriction through nutrient limitation, esp. dissolved silicon was more important. However, Melosira sp. developed well under stratified conditions but collapsed due to increased sinking losses when the water column became too stable. An attempt is made to apply Reynolds' possibility matrix of the most likely phytoplankton assemblages as a function of nutrients and mixing in the shallow Lake Müggelsee.  相似文献
