Abstract: The Lower Devonian Xujiachong Formation from the vicinity of Qujing City, Yunnan, China is interpreted as a terrestrial‐fluviatile‐lacustrine sequence. It contains important nonmarine biotas including plants, fish and invertebrates. The plants are particularly interesting as they include many endemic taxa. Dispersed spore assemblages have been recovered from the upper part of this formation. The spores are well preserved and of moderate thermal maturity. They are systematically described and four new species erected: Aneurospora xujiachongensis sp. nov., Chelinospora ouyangii sp. nov., Camptozonotriletes? luii sp. nov. and Leiozonospora xichongensis sp. nov. One new combination is proposed: Aneurospora conica (Ouyang and Lu) comb. nov. This is a rare report of a Lower Devonian dispersed spore assemblage from the South China Plate. Indeed, few dispersed spore assemblages of this age are known outside of Euramerica and Northern Gondwana. It is suggested that the Xujiachong Formation spore assemblages can all be equated to the polygonalisemsiensis Spore Assemblages Biozone (PE SAB) of Richardson and McGregor (1986) indicating an early (but not earliest) Pragian to ?earliest Emsian age. However, caution is urged, because biostratigraphical interpretation is difficult owing to distinct differences between dispersed spore assemblages from South China and Euramerica/Northern Gondwana. This almost certainly reflects palaeophytogeographical variation and regional endemism among early land plant floras on widely separated land masses. Palynofacies analysis supports a nonmarine origin for the deposits of the Xujiachong Formation, with the very rare marine palynomorphs that were encountered interpreted as reworked.  相似文献

The Devonian System in northern Argentina has been broadly analysed, but details of its lithologies, biostratigraphy and fossil content have not been presented in a comprehensive study. We performed the first integrative analysis of the palynological and macrofossil content from the Pescado Formation at the Zenta Range, Argentina. We define a new species of cryptospore and extend the stratigraphic record of the ichnogenus Psammichnites isp. for South America. The stratigraphic ranges of the palynomorphs suggest a time span from the ?late Lochkovian to Pragian–earliest Emsian, but the co-occurrences of key invertebrates narrow the age of the beds to the late Pragian and early Emsian. Moreover, sedimentary analysis indicates a proximal shoreface–foreshore depocenter during this time range for the Zenta region. The contraction phase of the basin during the middle Pragian and Emsian is evidenced by the presence of sand bodies at the top of the column and the higher supply of terrigenous components. During this regression event, a low diversity Malvinokaffric Realm brachiopod assemblage occurs, with dominance of Australospirifer hawkinsi. The predominance of the latter species during this event is coeval with the first decline of the Malvinokaffric Realm in the neighbouring Paraná basin.  相似文献

A subsurface core from the Tilden reef (Middle Silurian) in southern Illinois contains a large and diverse assemblage of hystrichospherids and plant spores. The plant spores are restricted to sinuous cracks filled with calcite and brownish-gray clay. The miospore assemblage is dated late Middle or early Late Devonian, and thus the fissure fillings represent a “stratigraphic leak”. Failure to recognize this phenomenon could result in misleading age determinations.

The spore assemblage is dominated by cingulate miospores of the genera Stenozonotriletes and Retusotriletes and by spores with perisporal membranes assignable to Diaphanospora. Seventeen new species are described and illustrated: one each of Deltoidospora, Anapiculatisporites, Verrucosisporites, Cristatisporites, Rhabdosporites, Ancyrospora, and Endosporites; two each of Converrucosisporites and Retusotriletes, and three each of Stenozonotriletes and Diaphanospora.  相似文献

A new species of spore, Costatoperforosporites friisiae sp. nov., is described from the Early Cretaceous (late Aptian–early Albian) deposits of Catefica in the Lusitanian Basin, western Portugal. Although the morphology of the muri is clearly of the Cicatricosisporites type, the presence of micropores on these sculptural elements and within the intervening grooves is a particularly distinctive feature and more typical of spores that have been attributed previously to Costatoperforosporites. As a result, this genus is emended not only to accommodate Costatoperforosporites friisiae but also to differentiate it more clearly from other, similar, murornate genera. It is considered to represent the family Anemiaceae. So far, Costatoperforosporites friisiae has only been encountered in the Catefica palynoflora. The presence of many other pteridophyte spores, especially of schizaealean derivation, together with abundant cheirolepidiacean remains at this locality, strongly suggests a warm, moist climate and diverse source vegetation.  相似文献

The sedimentary beds associated with Deccan Continental Flood Basalt (DCFB) sequences exposed in the volcanic subprovinces of Jabalpur-Mandla-Chhindwara (JMC) regions of Madhya Pradesh and Nand-Dongargaon (N-D) basin and the adjoining areas to the west in Yeotmal-Nanded in Maharashtra were studied for their palynofloral analysis. The sediments were characterized palynologically and changes in the palynoflora are observed at different stratigraphic levels in a number of sections including several new intertrappean localities recorded in recent years. For the purpose of effective correlation of different subprovinces, palynofloras of some of the previously studied intertrappeans are also reviewed. Our studies suggest that before the start of the Deccan volcanic activity, the palynoflora found in the Lameta sediments, was dominated by gymnosperms-angiosperm association. The plant canopy consisted mainly of gymnosperms (Conifers and Podocarpaceae) whereas, the understory members were mostly of palms and herbs (Poaceae and Asteraceae). The eruption of Deccan volcanic flows severely affected the existing floral association and proved fatal for the well established plant community. The immediately overlying sediments associated with the earliest volcanic flows are dominated by pteridophytes and angiosperm taxa (Azolla cretacea, Aquilapollenites bengalensis, Ariadnaesporites sp., Gabonisporis vigourouxii and Triporoletes reticulatus). Higher up in the stratigraphic sequence, similar forms continued with simultaneous appearance of new taxa including Scabrastephanocolpites spp. At still higher stratigraphic levels, abundance of fungi especially the mycorrhizal fungi, concurrent with sharp decline in pollen/spore recovery was observed. In the culminating phase (i.e. Palaeocene) of Deccan volcanic history a new palynofloral assemblage of typical Palaeocene taxa (Dandotiaspora dilata, D. pseudoauriculata, D. plicata, Spinizonocolpites echinatus, Matanomadhiasulcites sp., and Lakiapollis ovatus) was encountered.  相似文献

Twenty‐seven species of well‐preserved and abundant Early Cretaceous non‐marine ostracod crustaceans were recovered from the North Falkland Basin. The assemblage is unusually diverse for a non‐marine palaeoenvironment and is sourced from cuttings samples collected during 2011 drilling of wells by Desire and Rockhopper Exploration, in the northern and southern areas of the basin. Ostracoda are entirely undocumented in published accounts from this basin, and all but one species appear to be new to science. For the new taxa, one new family (Alloiocyprideidae; type genus Hourcqia) is proposed and includes Hourcqia woodi sp. nov. Four new genera are erected: Falklandicypris gen. nov.; type species Fpetrasaltata sp. nov., Gangamoncythere gen. nov.; type species G. colini sp. nov., Paraplesiocypridea gen. nov.; type species P. alloios sp. nov., and Musacchiocythere gen nov.; type species M. sarunata (Musacchio, 1978 ). Nine other species are described as new and are Falklandicypris desiderata, Clinocypris epacrus, Cypria poietes, Ilhasina? leiodermatus, Looneyellopsis tuberculatus, Theriosynoecum petasmathylacus, Theriosynoecum ballentae, Timiriasevia fluitans, and Vecticypris samesi. The remainder are left in open nomenclature due to paucity of material. The ostracod assemblage is largely restricted to the southern part of the basin (wells 25/5‐1 and 26/6‐1). In the northern part of the basin only four species, dominated by Vecticypris samesi, are present and with one possible exception are restricted there. There appears to have been little or no interchange of species suggesting that a barrier probably existed between the northern and southern regions. The more diverse southern assemblage indicates that more favourable conditions existed to the south. Stratigraphically, a distinct change in faunal composition recorded in both southern wells is likely to be an isochronous event correlatable across the southern area, and of an age no younger than Hauterivian.  相似文献

The origin and evolution of angiosperms can be unravelled by using fossil records to determine first occurrences and phytogeographic histories of plant families and genera. Many angiosperm families, for example the Onagraceae, have a poor macrofossil record, but are more common in palynological records. Modern Onagraceae produce pollen clearly distinct from that of other angiosperms. Combined morphological features obtained by use of light and scanning electron microscopy have enabled assignment of fossil Onagraceae pollen to extant genera, and therefore tracing of the origin and past distributions of extant Onagraceae lineages. We studied a Miocene palynoflora from the Daotaiqiao Formation of north-east China. Using the single-grain technique, we examined individual Onagraceae pollen/tetrads using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Fossil Onagraceae pollen is more frequent than macrofossil remains, but is still rare, and usually represented by a single taxon in palynological samples. Remarkably, samples from the Miocene of north-east China contain five different species: two of Circaea, one of Epilobium, and two of Ludwigia. Such a large number of Onagraceae taxa from a single palynoflora is unknown elsewhere. Whereas Ludwigia pollen is known from Cenozoic sediments of the northern hemisphere, the Circaea pollen is the first fossil pollen assignable to this extant genus. This is also the first fossil record of Epilobium from China. Although the young geological age of this sample does not enable consideration of time of origin for the genera encountered, the co-occurrence of Circaea, Epilobium, and Ludwigia in the mid to late-Miocene of East Asia sheds some light on their phytogeographic histories.  相似文献

Thin continental Carboniferous sequences crop out sparsely in the western Southern Alps (Alpe Logone, Mesenzana, Grantola, Bosco Valtravaglia-Fabiasco, Val Tresa, etc.) and are currently the subject of a detailed litho- and biostratigraphic revision, to reconsider their chronological position with respect to previously published age constraints. The age of these Upper Palaeozoic sedimentary successions, scattered over a wide area and strongly tectonized along major structural lineaments, has long been debated between Westphalian and Stephanian. The present work focuses mainly on the palynology of the Brezzo di Bèdero section (Luino, Lake Maggiore). The recovered palynoflora is assigned to 42 spore genera and 76 species of which one genus and 10 species are newly proposed. Fifty-seven spore species and 19 pollen species are described and illustrated. Qualitatively, the Bèdero palynoflora shows strong affinities to those of Western Europe. The most abundant palynomorphs are trilete spores known to be characteristics of the late Westphalian and early Stephanian assemblages. These are characterized by the remarkable presence of Florinites and subordinately Wilsonites species, low numbers of Potonieisporites, rare Limitisporites and Vesicaspora, and very rare Latensina-Cordaitina pollen. The occurrence of diverse monolete spores Laevigatosporites, Punctatosporites, Spinosporites, Thymospora and Torispora, with common Lundbladispora gigantea, L. simonii, Stenozonotriletes rubius n. sp. together with the absence of plicate and taeniate pollen grains suggests a strong resemblance to the late Westphalian–early Stephanian interval assigned to the OT Zone of Western Europe. Variations in the quantitative composition can be likely attributed to variations in the environmental setting with regards to non-forming peat deposits. The palynological suite is indicative of the existence of a well-established lowland Cordaiteans vegetation and well settled pterophytic, pteridosperm and subordinately sphenophytic and lycophytic, hygrophytic plant communities.  相似文献

One inaperturate and 16 monosulcate pollen types are described from the latest Campanian to earliest Maastrichtian sediments of the Vilui basin, Siberia, using both light and scanning electron microscopy, and assigned systematically when possible to modern families or subfamilies. Despite their scant occurrence, the pollen grains show considerable diversity. Two new genera have been erected. Lasioideaecidites with two species, Lasioideaecidites hessei and Lasioideaecidites bogneri, represents the earliest record of the subfamily Lasioideae (Araceae). Aristolochiacidites with one species, Aristolochiacidites viluiensis, is assigned to the subfamily Aristolochioideae (Aristolochiaceae) and represents the first fossil pollen record of the family. A new species of Liliacidites, Liliacidites goldblattii, is closely similar to pollen of Isophysioideae (Iridaceae) and/or Doryanthaceae and is the first fossil evidence of the clade that includes these closely related families. A further nine new fossil species are described (Clavatipollenites timerdyakhensis, Liliacidites palaeofritillaria, Retimonocolpites longosucatus, R. microreticulatus, R. microrugulatus, R. lysichitonoides, R. chapmaniae, Monosulcites parvus and Arecipites tyungensis) and assigned to Chloranthaceae, Araceae (Orontioideae, ?Pothoideae), Liliaceae, ?Hypoxidaceae and Arecaceae. The Hydatellaceae (Nymphaeales) may also be present in the palynoflora of the Vilui Basin, represented by pollen similar to M. rivularis Braman from the Santonian to Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) Milk River Formation, Canada.  相似文献

The partially reticulate sculpture of Molaspora aspera sp. nov., a marsileaceous megaspore from a Cenomanian deposit in western France, distinguishes it from other species of Molaspora. An acrolamella entirely surrounds and obscures a small tetrad scar, a feature that has been demonstrated hitherto within members of the genus only in M. fibrosa. It was also encountered for the first time in M. lobata, with which the new species is associated in the same French mesofossil assemblage. The ultrastructure of the sporoderm of M. aspera is similar to that of M. lobata, but differs particularly in that the inner epispore is markedly thicker and may also contain numerous large, homogeneous spherules or, alternatively, holes of comparable dimensions and only a few small spherules. It is possible that these are a response to some hostile bacterial or other activity when the developing sporoderm was partially permeable. The cavity replacing part of the epispore in one of the specimens, and in the specimen of M. lobata examined, may be a preservational feature or have served to increase buoyancy of the spore in water. Molaspora lobata is very similar to megaspores of fossil and extant Regnellidium, but M. aspera bears some resemblance to other members of extant Marsileaceae and certain species of Cretaceous Arcellites, although there are significant differences between them. This suggests that Molaspora is a heterogeneous taxon embracing megaspores produced by water ferns of more than one natural genus, of which only Regnellidium has survived to the present day.  相似文献

Linguopugnoides Havli?ek 1960, originally based on 3 Early Devonian (Lochkovian‐Pragian) species from the Czech Republic, is now construed as embracing at least 25 species distributed over all northern hemisphere continents as well as Australia, and extending from late Llandovery to early Emsian. Species‐diversity peaked during the Lochkovian when the genus was widespread, with 15 species having been reported. Four species are described as new. L. praecarens sp.nov. from the latest Silurian (Pridoli) of the Turkestan Range (South Tien Shan) is considered to be ancestral to the numerous, mainly late Lochkovian‐Pragian forms that appeared during the great diversification of the genus during the early Devonian. Three new species are described from the Lochkovian of the Zeravshan Range, Uzbekistan: L. rectiplicatus, L. diversiplicatus as well as the previously figured but not described L. kimi Rzhonsnitskaya. Species of Linguopugnoides have biostratigraphic and biogeographic significance and have obvious value for inter‐regional correlation.  相似文献

Preservation of calcareous nannoplankton in surface sediment samples from the Southern Ocean south of Australia and adjacent to New Zealand record a single assemblage. The dominant species are Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa muellerae, Calcidiscus leptoporus, Helicosphaera carteri and Coccolithus pelagicus. The assemblage varies little in abundance and diversity with minor correlation to present-day overlying surface water masses and oceanic fronts. Increase in abundance of H. carteri and C. pelagicus in the region of the Subtropical Front may reflect higher nutrients associated with this front. The assemblage, although altered by dissolution, represents a warmer climatic interval than present-day with the presence of preferentially dissolved, warm-water species preserved as far south as the Polar Front. The presence of warm-water species under sub-Antarctic waters at the Polar Front is interpreted as a relic population from the Holocene climatic optimum of 10–8 ka. The absence of coccoliths in sediments poleward of the Polar Front suggests an equatorward shift of this front following the climatic optimum, resulting in increased productivity of siliceous phytoplankton associated with the colder waters and increased dissolution of coccoliths. Movement of the Subtropical Front for the same interval is not recorded in the preserved coccoliths. The more heavily calcified form of E. huxleyi which dominates the living assemblage north of the Subtropical Front is subject to dissolution in this region and is poorly preserved in the sediment assemblage.  相似文献

The global warming trend of the latest Oligocene was interrupted by several cooling events associated with Antarctic glaciations. These cooling events affected surface water productivity and plankton assemblages. Well-preserved radiolarians were obtained from upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199 Sites 1218 and 1219 in the equatorial Pacific, and 110 radiolarian species were identified.Four episodes of significant radiolarian faunal changes were identified: middle late Oligocene (27.5 to 27.3 Ma), latest Oligocene (24.4 Ma), earliest Miocene (23.3 Ma), and middle early Miocene (21.6 Ma). These four episodes approximately coincide with increases and decreases of biogenic silica accumulation rates and increases in δ18O values coded as “Oi” and “Mi” events. These data indicate that Antarctic glaciations were associated with change of siliceous sedimentation patterns and faunal changes in the equatorial Pacific.Radiolarian fauna was divided into three assemblages based on variations in radiolarian productivity, species richness and the composition of dominant species: a late Oligocene assemblage (27.6 to 24.4 Ma), a transitional assemblage (24.4 to 23.3 Ma) and an early Miocene assemblage (23.3 to 21.2 Ma). The late Oligocene assemblage is characterized by relatively high productivity, low species richness and four dominant species of Tholospyris anthophora, Stichocorys subligata, Lophocyrtis nomas and Lithelius spp. The transitional assemblage represents relatively low values of productivity and species richness, and consists of three dominant species of T. anthophora, S. subligata and L. nomas. The characteristics of the early Miocene assemblage are relatively low productivity, but high species richness. The two dominant species present in this assemblage are T. anthophora and Cyrtocapsella tetrapera. The most significant faunal turnover of radiolarians is marked at the boundary between the transitional/early Miocene assemblages. We also reviewed changes in other microfossil assemblages in the low latitudes during the late Oligocene through early Miocene. The microfossil assemblages of major groups show sequential changes near the Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) boundary (23.8 Ma). Many extinction events and some first occurrences of calcareous nannofossils and many occurrences of radiolarians are found from about 24.8 to 23.3 Ma, and first occurrences of planktic foraminifers and diatoms followed from 23.2 through 22 Ma. Hence, the O/M boundary is identified as a significant level for microfossil evolutions.  相似文献

Twenty-seven species of freshwater Hyphomycetes from two five-state areas in the northern Appalachian Highland, New England, and three Coastal Plain states were collected, isolated, and identified. The spores of three fungi which are probably aquatic Moniliales were also studied. Sigmoidea, a new Hyphomycete genus, includes submerged aquatic fungi which produce phialides laterally along the mycelium and sigmoid, multicellular phialospores. Varicosporium giganteum sp. n. produces terminal, hyaline, branched, and multiseptate aleuriospores. The main spore axis has one to four lateral branches which arise successively on one side of this axis. Tricladium marylandicum sp. n. is similar to T. splendens in that the lateral branches are constricted where each branch joins the main spore axis. It differs from this species in that the spore has a blunt apical cell on the main axis and on each of the lateral axes. Three possible methods of dispersal are presented to explain the cosmopolitan distribution of freshwater Hyphomycetes.  相似文献

Floral remains are generally rare in the fossil record of Pakistan. We present here new discoveries of mid-Cenozoic wood and pollen of Oligocene deposits from central Pakistan. The palynological sample derives from claystone stratigraphically positioned above the wood fossils, but pollen and spores as well as the wood are all of Oligocene age. The three fossil wood samples derive from the top of the lower unit of the Chitarwata Formation, and the palynological sample comes from claystone situated in the middle unit of the formation. The wood samples are described and found to represent two species of the morphotaxon Terminalioxylon (Combretaceae): T. burmense Mädel-Angeliewa and Müller-Stoll [Madel-Angeliewa, E., Müller-Stoll, W.R., 1973. Kritische Studien über fossile Combretaceen-Hölzer: über Hölzer von Typus Terminalioxylon G. Schönfeld mit einer Revision der bisher zu Evodioxylon Chiarugi gestellten Arten. Palaeontographica 142B, 117–136.] and T. sulaimanense sp. nov. These fossils are close to modern species of Terminalia, which occur in moist deciduous or semi-evergreen tropical forests. The palynological assemblage is composed of a mixture of pollen and spore types from different origins. There is a dominance of hygrophilous ferns, pines, Amaranthaceae–Chenopodiaceae–Caryophylaceae, but also the occurrence of Palmae, which are typical of tropical rainforests. This assemblage suggests that the depositional system is set in a context of nearby mountains with a minimum altitude of 2000 to 2500 m and characterized by differentiated forest belts above the tropical lowland vegetation of lower elevations. Wood, pollen and spores support the view of a fluvial environment surrounded by a tropical forested habitat. The separate stratigraphic position of the pollen assemblage above the fossil wood could explain its slightly different, more varied, palaeoenvironmental signal.  相似文献

Tasmanian rotifera: Affinities with the Australian fauna   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Plankton was collected from more than 100 lentic and lotic habitats in Tasmania. Of the 131 rotifer taxa identified, 126 are first records for the island, and 9 are first records for Australia. Three new species, Aspelta tilba, sp. nov., Lepadella tyleri sp. nov., and Testudinella unicornuta sp. nov. are described and figured. Horaëlla brehmi, which has a disjunct distribution (equatorial regions and southeastern Australia), also occurs in Tasmanian waters. The morphology and development of this rare species are discussed. Geographical affinities of the Tasmanian assemblage are considered. There appears to be a significant tropical component in the Tasmanian Rotifera.  相似文献

Castilleja hidalgensis is described from several collections from xeric limestone sites in central Hidalgo, Mexico. The new species belongs to a small complex of poorly known and uncommon species within sect.Euchroma, sharing important characteristics withC. macrostigma, the first-described taxon in this assemblage. The new species appears to be rare and highly restricted both geographically and ecologically. A key to the species of theC. macrostigma group is provided.  相似文献

Sampling of a lenticular concentration of vertebrate debris and associated sediments from the lower Kimmeridgian of southern England has allowed the study of a diverse and abundant assemblage of chondrichthyan remains. A number of previously undescribed species are recorded, of which three new species are named; Squatina? frequens, Synechodus plicatus and Protospinax planus. Additional diagnosis of the genus Paracestracion Koken is given to allow its identification from dental remains. Several nominal batoid species are synonymised with Spathobatis bugesiacus Thiolliere. This assemblage is considered to be typical of Middle–Late Jurassic neritic environments, and is compared to other contemporaneous selachian faunas.  相似文献

A survey was made of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) status of 73 spring ephemeral plant species that grow in the desert ecosystem of Junggar Basin, northwest China. The proportion of AM colonization ranged from 7 to 73% with a mean value of 30%. A total of 65 plant species studied were AM with coils/arbuscules or vesicles and the remaining eight species were possibly AM with no coils/arbuscules or vesicles but with fungal mycelia in the root cortex. AM fungal spores were isolated from rhizosphere samples of all 73 plant species and identified. The mean spore density was 22 per 20 ml of air-dried soil, ranging from 0 to 120. Colonization and spore density of perennials were slightly higher than of annuals and varied among different plant families. A total of 603 AM fungal spore (or sporocarp) specimens were isolated belonging to six genera, Acaulospora, Archaeopora, Entrophospora, Glomus, Paraglomus, and Scutellospora; Glomus was the dominant genus. We conclude that spring ephemerals may be highly dependent on AM associations for survival in the very infertile and arid soils of this desert ecosystem.Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

Lotic bacterial communities can be examined at multiple levels: from the assemblage level to populations of individual species. In stream environments, as in many other systems, the percentage of bacteria that are culturable is quite low. In this study, the culturability of the overall bacterial assemblage, as well as the culturability of three common species (Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Burkholderia cepacia, and Pseudomonas putida), was determined in samples collected from four streams on three dates. Colony hybridization (colonies were grown on modified nutrient agar) and fluorescent in situ hybridization were used to calculate the percentage of cells of a given species that were culturable. Approximately half of the overall assemblage was estimated to be viable but nonculturable cells (VBNC). The culturability of two of the species was low (0.29% for A. calcoaceticus and 0.46% for P. putida), whereas the value for B. cepacia (2.48%) exceeded the overall assemblage level culturability (0.90%). Overall, both bacterial assemblages and populations were dominated by VBNC. These results show quantitatively that not all members of a species that has culturable representatives are culturable when retrieved from natural populations, likely because of interspecific phenotypic and genotypic variability. Thus, the large pool of nonculturable cells includes representatives of species that are, under some circumstances, culturable.  相似文献
