In large parts of Europe horse chestnut trees ( Aesculus hippocastanum) suffer from severe defoliation by an alien invasive species, the specialist leaf mining moth Cameraria ohridella (Lepidoptera; Gracillariidae). Heavily infested trees have a drastically shortened period for photosynthesis. We quantified the effect of moth infestation on reproduction of horse chestnut trees in two different cities in central Europe, Bern and Munich. C. ohridella negatively affected seed and fruit weight of A. hippocastanum at both locations. In Munich, seed weight of heavily damaged trees was reduced by almost half. However, the number of seeds per fruit, the number of fruits per inflorescence, and the number of inflorescences per tree did not change due to herbivory. We conclude that C. ohridella mining affects seed quality but not seed quantity. The reduced seed weight may severely impair growth and survival of horse chestnut seedlings and thus may endanger the long-term persistence of A. hippocastanum in its endemic forests in south-east Europe.  相似文献

Relatively few studies conducted in natural plants populations focus on the relationship between seed size and their germination ability and seedling establishment. Maianthemum bifolium is a perennial herb that spreads vegetatively through rhizomatous growth and reproduces through seeds. However, this species is characterized as seed and microsite limited, and under undisturbed conditions seedlings are not noted. The studies were conducted in two populations of M. bifolium in six subsequent seasons. The mean seed mass was negatively correlated both per ramet as well as in the fruit with the number of seeds, and positively with its height and the number of flowers. The long-term mean annual production of seeds in the populations was 37 and 56 seeds per m2. The seeds from both populations had similarly high germination abilities that were approximately 90% under laboratory conditions, 60% in garden, and 55% in the natural habitat. Seeds from four size classes were sown and a positive correlation was noted between seedling establishment and the mass of the seeds from which they grew (rS = 0.64). Seedling survival was also significantly correlated with seed mass.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal variations in allelopathic potential ofArtemisia princeps var.orientalis. Aqueous and meth-anol extracts and volatile substances were prepared in the laboratory from samples collected monthly (April through October). Their impacts were then assessed on the germination and seedling growth ofLactuca sativa andAchyranthes japonica. The allelopathic potential varied with the time of sample collection and the concentration tested. For example, germination ofL. sativa was not inhibited by the aqueous extract but seedling growth (shoots and roots) was, with its seasonal effect being significant. ForA. japonica, seed germination was not inhibited at lower concentrations (except for August samples). However, at higher concentrations and in certain months (especially July), germination was more negatively affected. The degree of seedling growth inhibition also differed by month and by extract concentration, with roots being impacted more than shoots. Volatile substances also had a time-dependent influence on the germination and seedling elongation ofA. japonica. In a separate experiment, the ethyl-acetate and water fractions of a crude methanol extract were prepared monthly fromA. princeps var.orientalis. Here, we examined their antimicrobial activities against three gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, andStaphylococcus aureus), two gramnegative bacteria (Escherichia coli andPseudomonas fluorescens), and one lactic acid bacterium,Lactobacillus plantar urn. The ethyl-acetate fraction that was sampled in September was remarkably potent againstB. cereus andB. subtilis, whereas the water fraction collected in August and September showed great antimicrobial activity against the grampositive and -negative bacteria. In contrast,L. plantarum was not inhibited by the water fraction, regardless of the sampling month. Likewise, the ethyl-acetate and water fractions collected in April and October had the lowest levels of antimicrobial activity.  相似文献

The interaction between Trichoderma pseudokoningii (Rifai) 511, 2212, 741A, 741B and 453 and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe BEG12 and Gigaspora rosea Nicolson & Schenck BEG9 were studied in vitro and in greenhouse experiments. All T. pseudokoningii strains inhibited the germination of G. mosseae and Gi. rosea except the strain 453, which did not affect the germination of Gi. rosea. Soluble exudates and volatile substances produced by all T. pseudokoningii strains inhibited the spore germination of G. mosseae. The germination of Gi. rosea spores was inhibited by the soluble exudates produced by T. pseudokoningii 2212 and 511, whereas T. pseudokoningii 714A and 714B inhibited the germination of Gi. rosea spores by the production of volatile substances. The strains of T. pseudokoningii did not affect dry matter and percentage of root length colonization of soybean inoculated with G. mosseae, except T. pseudokoningii 2212, which inhibited both parameters. However, all T. pseudokoningii strains decreased the shoot dry matter and the percentage of AM root length colonization of soybean inoculated with Gi. rosea. The saprotrophic fungi tested seem to affect AM colonization of root by effects on the presymbiotic phase of the AM fungi. No influence of AM fungi on the number of CFUs of T. pseudokoningii was found. The effect of saprotrophic fungi on AM fungal development and function varied with the strain of the saprotrophic species tested.  相似文献

The spatial structure-mediated indirect effects of an aquatic host plant, Trapa japonica (Trapaceae), on survival of a leaf beetle, Galerucella nipponensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with regard to predation by a water strider, Gerris nepalensis (Hemiptera: Gerridae), were investigated in an irrigation pond and under indoor conditions. Beetle density, particularly in the first-instar stage of the larvae, became extremely low in the second generation in the pond, even though food resources were abundant. The biological check method, which excludes natural enemies by caging, suggested that a causal factor of the low density was predation by Gerris nepalensis in midsummer and thereafter. Normally growing rosettes extend their leaves horizontally on the water surface. However, some rosettes of T. japonica grew leaves vertically in the later seasons, and such overgrown rosettes were distributed patchily in the ponds. Beetle density was higher on the latter rosettes than on the former ones. The indoor experiment showed that the water strider can feed on the eggs of beetles on normally grown rosettes but not on the overgrown rosettes. Furthermore, female adults of Galerucella nipponensis preferred the overgrown rosettes over the normally grown rosettes for oviposition when water striders were present. These facts suggest that the spatial structure-mediated indirect effects of the host plant modify the interaction between herbivore and predator. Phylogenetic analysis of the plastid (chloroplast) DNA matK gene of Zosteraceae species was undertaken. A molecular phylogenetic tree based on matK sequence data showed the monophyly of Heterozostera tasmanica and subgenus Zosterella and did not support the separation of Heterozostera from the genus Zostera. The tree based on matK supported the monophyly of the subgenus Zostera, and showed that Zosteraceae consist of three main groups: Phyllospadix, which is clearly defined by being dioecious; the subgenus Zosterella and Heterozostera; and the subgenus Zostera. Character-state reconstruction of chromosome number and geographic distribution for our molecular phylogenetic tree showed that 2n=12 is a plesiomorphic character for Zostera and Heterozostera, that the chromosome number was doubled or tripled in two lineages, and that the initial speciation of Zostera and Heterozostera occurred in the Northern Hemisphere. The matK tree showed the close affinity of Z. noltii and Z. japonica, which have disjunct distributions. Zostera marina, which is the only widely distributed species in the subgenus Zostera, also occurring in the northern Atlantic, was shown to be embedded within other subgenus Zostera species.  相似文献

The germination response of different sized seeds from individuals of a Mediterranean fire-prone shrub (Cistus ladanifer) was investigated in relation to pre-germination heating. A control (no heating), a low temperature during a short exposure time (50°C during 5 min), a high temperature during a short exposure time (100°C during 5 min) and a high temperature during a long exposure time (100°C during 15 min) were applied to seeds from different individual plants with different mean seed weight. These pre-germination treatments resemble natural germination scenarios for the studied species, absence of fire, low intensity pasture fire, typical Mediterranean shrub fire, and severe fire with high fuel load. Mean seed weight only showed a marginally significant positive correlation with the proportion of germinated seeds whatever the pre-germination treatment. These results suggest that seed dormancy is unrelated to seed size and that under the experimental conditions used in this study, the effect of seed size on seed germination is low. Nevertheless, larger seeds could be favoured in natural conditions, especially under the high competition scenario which arise after wildfires. Control seeds showed a negative correlation between seed size and germination velocity suggesting that lighter seeds could take advantage from early germination in recruitment events in the absence of wildfires. Nevertheless, even the lower pre-germination heating treatment turns this correlation in not significant, suggesting a strong selection pressure (unrelated to seed size) for early germination after fire events. In our study, different sized seeds of C. ladanifer seem to perform better under different germination scenarios suggesting that seed size variation could be maintained by the alternation of recruitments without wildfires and recruitments after wildfire events.  相似文献

Trichoderma species has been suggested as potential biocontrol agent forFusarium verticillioides on maize. In this cereal,F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum contributed to fumonisin accumulation. In addition,F. proliferatum could produce beauvericin and fusaproliferin. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect ofTrichoderma spp. on growth and fumonisin B1 fusaproliferin and beauvericin production byF. proliferatum. Dual cultures of F.proliferatum andT. harzianum ITEM 3636 andT. longibrachiatum ITEM 3635 on maize meal agar at 0.995 aw were done. The effect ofTrichoderma spp. on the lineal growth ofF. proliferatum was determined. The effect ofTrichoderma species on fumonisin B1, fusaproliferin and beauvericin production byF. proliferatum was determined on co-inoculated maize kernels by HPLC.T. harzianum suppressedF. proliferatum growth once contact between the colonies occurred.T. longibrachiatum showed a less antagonistic effect againstF. proliferatum. A reduction on fumonisin B1 production of 98% and 88% was observed in the co-incubation ofF. proliferatum withT. harzianum andT. longibrachiatum, respectively. The decrease of FB1 production was significant even in maize kernels on whichF. proliferatum had been growing 7 days prior to the addition ofTrichoderma spp. The concentration of beauvericin and fusaproliferin produced during 30 days coincubation ofF. proliferatum with bothTrichoderma spp. did not differ to those produced byF. proliferatum alone. These mycotoxins might enter the food chain causing so far unknown consequences to the health of domestic animals and humans. For this reason it is important, when a potential biocontrol agent is under study, to test the effect on the fungal growth and on the putative mycotoxin produced. Part of the information was presented at the Mycotoxin Prevention Cluster Dissemination Day and Mycoglobe Launch Conference, Brussels, Belgium, Oct 20–21, 2004 Financial support: Agenda Córdoba Ciencia, grant No 0279–000431/00  相似文献

We experimentally tested the indirect and direct effects of Amblyseius womersleyi on Tetranychus kanzawai. The presence of A. womersleyi indirectly reduced egg production of T. kanzawai by 25.9%, although this effect had less impact than direct egg predation. The mechanism of this indirect effect could be explained by behavioral changes in T. kanzawai females; in the presence of A. womersleyi, T. kanzawai females allocated more time to seeking refuge on webs at the expense of feeding on leaves.  相似文献

Unicellular green algae of the genusDunaliella thrive in extreme environmental conditions such as high salinity, low pH, high irradiance and subzero temperatures. Species ofDunaliella are well known in the alga biotechnological industry and are employed widely for the production of valuable biochemicals, such as carotenoids. Some strains ofDunaliella are cultivated commercially in large outdoor ponds and are harvested to produce dry algal meals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids and oils for the health food industry, and coloring agents for the food and cosmetic industries. During the past decade, the advances in molecular biology and biochemistry of microalgae, along with the advances in biotechnology of microalgal mass cultivation, enabled this microalga to become a staple of commercial exploitation. In particular, the advent of molecular biology and mutagenesis inDunaliella has permitted enhancements in the carotenoids content of this green alga, making it more attractive for biotechnological applications. Accordingly, the present review summarizes the recent developments and advances in biotechnology of carotenoid production inDunaliella.  相似文献

Hyphae and vesicles of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were found within the decomposing leaves of Myrica parvifolia, M. pubescens and Paepalanthus sp. at three montane sites in Colombia. Hyphae, vesicles, and arbuscule-like structures were also found within scale-like leaves of the rhizomes of Paepalanthus sp. The litter found in the vicinity of the roots was divided into three decomposition layers. The highest AMF colonization occurred in the most decomposed leaves, which were in close association with roots. In contrast, there were no differences in AMF colonization of roots present in the different decomposition layers. Colonization of decomposing leaves by AMF did not differ between the two closely related species M. parvifolia and M. pubescens, nor between two sites (Guatavita and Zipacón, Colombia) differing in soil fertility. Occurrence of vesicles in decomposing leaves was correlated with abundant AMF extraradical hyphae among the leaves. We propose that AMF enter decomposing leaves mechanically through vascular tissue. As a consequence, AMF are well positioned to obtain and efficiently recycle mineral nutrients released by decomposer microorganisms before their loss by leaching or immobilization in soil.  相似文献

Centaurea achtarovii Urum. is a Bulgarian endemic, distributed only in Pirin Mountain. It is protected by the Biodiversity Act and included in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria as “endangered”. Assessment of size and density was carried out of both known populations of the species, around Orelyak summit and Kazanite locality. It was conducted in 2 sampling plots of 1000 square meters in each population and revealed their good condition. Population of Orelyak was larger and with higher density than that of Kazanite: 75 ha, 0.58 individuals per m2 (an average of 0.56 rosettes and 0.02 in flowering stage), and 35 ha, 0.23 individuals per m2 (an average of 0.16 rosettes and 0.07 in flowering stage), respectively. Elucidation of the reproductive biology of C. achtarovii was important in order to find the most appropriate conservation strategy for the species. Flower buds and open flowers in different stages of development were treated by the classical paraffin methods. The structures in male and female generative spheres were stable, the processes leading to formation of embryos and seeds were balanced, and no apomixes was noticed. Pollen viability assessed by acetocarmine test was over 50%, and seed viability estimated by tetrazolium test was 17.5%. In vitro seed germination was poor and culture growth was slow. The low viability of seeds, and the small amount of pollen, although with relatively high fertility, determined a low reproductive capacity of the species. In situ strategies reducing competitive species like Juniperis sibirica were recommended.  相似文献

We studied the effect of seed density on seed predation by following the fate of bat-dispersed Dipteryx micrantha (Leguminosae) seeds deposited under bat feeding roosts. The study was conducted in Cocha Cashu biological station, Amazonian Peru, during the fruiting period of Dipteryx. Predation of Dipteryx seeds in the area is mainly by large to medium-sized rodents. Seed deposits beneath bat feeding roosts were monitored for a 13-week period in an 18-ha study area. A total of 210 seed deposits were found, and on average, seed predators encountered 22% of them during any one week. About one-third of the seed deposits escaped predation, and those deposits that had relatively few seeds were more likely to go unnoticed by rodents than were deposits with many seeds. The mean seed destruction rate was 8% per week; deposits with many seeds tended to lose a smaller proportion of their seeds to seed predators than did deposits with few seeds. Regression tests for the weekly data showed that, at the beginning of the observation period, seed predation was not density-dependent. Later, when the total seed crop beneath roosts was high, the number of seeds predated per deposit was positively density-dependent, while the proportion of seeds predated was negatively density-dependent, indicating predator satiation. Seed deposits that had been visited by seed predators once had a higher probability of being revisited the week after, especially if they contained many seeds when first encountered. This indicates that the foraging behavior of rodents may be affected by their remembering the location of seed-rich patches.  相似文献

Field observations and inoculation experiments revealed that Uromyces appendiculatus var. azukicola has an autoecious and macrocyclic life cycle and produces spermogonia, aecia, uredinia, and telia on Vigna angularis var. angularis and V. angularis var. nipponensis. From inoculation experiments, it was suggested that this rust fungus has different host relationships from other varieties. Morphological examinations revealed that the characteristics of urediniospores and teliospores are different among varieties, although aeciospores are morphologically similar to each other.Contribution no. 182, Laboratory of Plant Parasitic Mycology, Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Tsukuba, Japan  相似文献

Many species in Mediterranean-type ecosystems regenerate after fire by seed germination from soil seed banks. Seed bank dynamics of two of those obligate seeders, Cistus monspeliensis and Rosmarinus officinalis, were investigated in relation to stand age since fire in southwestern Portugal. Soil seed density, annual seed input, annual seed losses through germination and seed persistence were compared between species at stands differing in age since fire (5, 10 and 35 years). Soil seed density and seed input increased over the first decade after fire and were lowest at 35-year-old stands for C. monspeliensis. In R. officinalis, few seeds were produced and found in the soil at early stages, and maximum seed input and soil seed density were attained at 35-year-old stands. Soil seed density was mostly driven by seed production in both species, which is largely dependent on plant traits and population dynamics related to fire. Overall, stand age since fire had a negligible effect on seed germination, seed persistence and viability. Ten to 39% of buried seeds were not recovered after 1 year, and viability of seeds recovered was 97–100% for C. monspeliensis and only 0–3% for R. officinalis. Variation in plant traits within the seeder syndrome was evidenced by this study. R. officinalis evidenced lower seed persistence, lower proportion of viable seed produced and lower density of viable soil seed than C. monspeliensis at any stage after fire. R. officinalis is expected to depend largely on previous year seed production for population replacement after fire.  相似文献

Seed predation may reduce recruitment in populations that are limited by the availability of seeds rather than microsites. Fires increase the availability of both seeds and microsites, but in plants that lack a soil- or canopy-stored seed bank, post-fire recruitment is often delayed compared to the majority of species. Pyrogenic flowering species, such as Telopea speciosissima, release their non-dormant seeds more than 1 year after fire, by which time seed predation and the availability of microsites may differ from that experienced by plants recruiting soon after fire. I assessed the role of post-dispersal seed predation in limiting seedling establishment after fire in T. speciosissima, in southeastern Australia. Using a seed-planting experiment, I manipulated vertebrate access to seeds and the combined cover of litter and vegetation within experimental microsites in the 2 years of natural seed fall after a fire. Losses to vertebrate and invertebrate seed predators were rapid and substantial, with 50% of seeds consumed after 2 months in exposed locations and after 5 months when vertebrates were excluded. After 7 months, only 6% of seeds or seedlings survived, even where vertebrates were excluded. Removing litter and vegetation increased the likelihood of seed predation by vertebrates, but had little influence on losses due to invertebrates. Microsites with high-density vegetation and litter cover were more likely to have seed survival or germination than microsites with low-density cover. Recruitment in pyrogenic flowering species may depend upon the release of seeds into locations where dense cover may allow them to escape from vertebrate predators. Even here, conditions suitable for germination must occur soon after seed release for seeds to escape from invertebrate predators. Seed production will also affect recruitment after any one fire, while the ability of some juvenile and most adult plants to resprout after fire buffers populations against rapid declines when there is little successful recruitment.  相似文献

Seeds of Delphinium fissum subsp. sordidum are physiologically dormant at maturity, with underdeveloped embryos; thus they have morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). The aims of this study were to determine the requirements for embryo growth, dormancy break and germination, to characterise the type of seed dormancy and to evaluate the effects of light, seed age, pollination mechanism, and inter-annual and inter-population variability on germinative ability. After 3 months of incubation at 5°C (cold stratification) in darkness conditions, the mean embryo length increased from 5.6 to 2.07 mm, with 76% of seeds germinating. Conversely, embryos of seeds incubated during 3 months at 20/7 or 28/14°C hardly grew and no germination was recorded. Since cold stratification was the only requirement for the loss of MPD, and both dry storage in laboratory conditions and warm stratification prior to cold stratification shortened the cold stratification period required for germination, it could be concluded that D. fissum subsp. sordidum seeds have intermediate complex MPD. Cold stratification and incubation in darkness conditions promoted higher germination percentages than those in light. In addition, germinative ability increased with seed age up to 8 months (reaching 96% at 5°C in darkness), showed a pronounced inter-annual and inter-population variability, as well as a significant decrease in seeds coming from pollination by geitonogamy. High temperatures (25/10 or 28/14°C) induced seeds to secondary dormancy, so seedling emergence in the greenhouse was restricted to February–March. The requirements for dormancy break and germination reflect an adaptation to trigger germination in late winter. This study is the first one to document a gradual increase in germination percentage with seed age for plant species with intermediate complex MPD.  相似文献

Mutant Arabidopsis thaliana taeniata (tae) plants are characterized by an altered morphology of leaves and the inflorescence. At the beginning of flowering, the inflorescence produces fertile flowers morphologically intermediate between a shoot and a flower. The recessive mutation tae also causes the formation of ectopic meristems and shoot rosettes on leaves. The expressivity of the mutant characters depend on the temperature and photoperiod. Analysis of the activity of KNOX class I genes in the leaves of the tae mutant has demonstrated the expression of genes KNAT2 and STM and an increase in the expression of genes KNAT1 and KNAT6 compared to wild-type leaves. These data indicate that the TAE gene negatively regulates the KNAT1, KNAT2, KNAT6, and STM genes.__________Translated from Genetika, Vol. 41, No. 8, 2005, pp. 1068–1074.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Lebedeva, Ezhova, Melzer.  相似文献

Lessertia frutescens L., commonly known as cancer-bush, is a medicinally reputed plant species indigenous to southern Africa. Field leaf extracts of this species are known to exhibit many curative properties. However, little is known about the bioactive compounds that are present in in vitro leaf extracts and seed extracts. The objective of this study was to verify the presence of and quantify l-canavanine, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), arginine and d-pinitol in the seeds, field leaves and in vitro leaves of L. frutescens using gas and liquid chromatography. Methanolic extracts of in vitro leaves, field leaves and seeds were used. MRM chromatograms were recorded for l-canavanine and arginine using tandem mass spectrometry. GC chromatograms were recorded for GABA and d-pinitol using gas chromatography. d-Pinitol was found to be most abundant and was 14.75 and 18.17 mg/g in in vitro and field leaf extracts respectively, followed by GABA (7.29 and 3.48 mg/g), arginine (7.08 and 0.35 mg/g) and l-canavanine (0.55 and 0.08 mg/g). In the seed extracts, GABA content was found to be the highest (1.69 mg/g) followed by l-canavanine (0.37 mg/g), then d-pinitol (0.25 mg/g), and arginine (0.02 mg/g). In vitro leaves had higher quantities of all compounds, except for d-pinitol. This study therefore highlights the potential of bulking in vitro leaves for the extraction of the medicinal compounds, l-canavanine and GABA.  相似文献
