Taxonomic studies on Danielssenia (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) with descriptions of two new species from Norway and Alaska

As a result of an examination of the original material of G. O. Sars and of new material from Björnehodebukta, Oslofjord, Danielssenia fusiformis (Brady) is synonymized with Danielssenia typica Boeck and the latter species redescribed. Two new species are described; D. quadriseta , from Oslofjord, is distinguished from all other known species by the presence of only 1 inner seta on the distal endopodite segment of swimming leg 3; Danielssenia reducta , from Alaska, is the only species in the genus with just 3 setae on the terminal endopodite segment of swimming leg 4. A new key to species of Danielssenia is also provided.     

Some harpacticoid copepods (Crustacea) of the family Tachidiidae from sublittoral soft sediments in Norway, the Celtic Sea and Gulf of Mexico

From an examination of the original material of G. O. Sars and new material from Björnehodebukta, Oslofjord, Psammis longisetosa Sars is redescribed, noting in particular the presence of 2 inner setae on P2 endopod 2 and 1 inner seta on P4 exopod 1. A new species is described from the Celtic Sea, Paradanielssenia biclavata , characterized by the presence of club-shaped appendages on the mouthparts and differing from P. kunzi Soyer in mouthpart structure and limb setation. Specimens from the Gulf of Mexico have been assigned to a new subspecies, Thompsonula hyaenae elongata , after careful comparison with specimens of the nominate T. hyaenae (I. C. Thompson) from Europe and South Carolina.     

A revision of the genus Halectinosoma (Harpacticoida: Ectinosomatidae): a reappraisal of H. sarsi (Boeck) and related species

Ectinosomatid material was examined from extensive collections around the British Isles and from several additional world localities and museum collections, permitting a revision of the genus Halectinosoma. This paper describes 12 morphologically similar species and erects five new species. H. sarsi (Boeck) is regarded as species incertae sedis, while H. sarsi sensu Sars (1904) is redescribed as H. pseudosarsi sp. nov.; H. sarsi sensu T. & A. Scott (1894) is synonymized with H. canaliculatum (Por). H. propinquum is regarded as a junior subjective synonym of H. chrystalli (T. Scott). H. clavatum (Sars) is resurrected, having previously been regarded as a synonym of H. brunneum (Brady). A key for the identification of females belonging to this group of species is provided.     

Three new species of the genus Leucon Kröyer, 1846 (Crustacea: Cumacea) from the continental slope off Surinam

Three new, and apparently closely related, species of cumacean are described from the continental slope off Surinam: Leucon turgidulus sp.nov. from about 500 m depth, L. medius sp.nov. from about 1000m and about 1500m, and L.jonesi sp.nov from about 1500m and about 2000m. The species have not been found in extensive collections from other parts of the deep Atlantic. Leucon pallidus G.O. Sars, 1865 is the most closely comparable of the previously known members of the genus.     

Tonnacypris glacialis (Ostracoda, Cyprididae): taxonomic position, (palaeo-) ecology, and zoogeography

Abstract. The freshwater ostracod Tonnacypris glacialis (Sars, 1890) is reported from the European Pleistocene for the first time. The historical allocation of the species is discussed, and the species composition and characteristics of Tonnacypris Diebel & Pietrzeniuk (1975) and its phylozoogeography are considered. The significance of T. glacialis is reviewed, particularly from the viewpoint of the possible implications of parthenogenesis (and occasional-male production) for the Quaternary history of the genus, and for the use of the species in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. It is suggested that the Pleistocene fossil occurrence of T. glacialis in modern temperature latitudes is a robust indicator of mean summer temperatures of 6°C.     

Effect of lipid reserves on individual carbon content of two planktonic freshwater copepod species

The effect of the variation of lipid droplet volume on individual carbon content was studied in two species of planktonic freshwater copepods, Eudiaptomus gracilis G.O. Sars and Thermocyclops oithonoides G.O. Sars. It was found, that when a multiple regression of carbon content on prosoma and lipid droplet volume instead of a simple regression of carbon content on prosoma volume was applied, the unexplainied variance of individual carbon content of Eudiaptomus gracilis could be reduced. However, the use of multiple regression on Thermocyclops oithonoides data did not lead to significantly higher coefficient of determination than was obtained by using a simple regression.     

Lipid content and utilization of lipids in planktonic copepods in Lake Pääjärvi,southern Finland

The variation of the lipid content of a planktonic copepod species, Eudiaptomus gracilis G. O. Sars, was studied in an oligotrophic lake, Pääjärvi, southern Finland, during 1982. The variation was caused by changes in the food resources and by the use of lipids for reproduction. The lipids are partly present in the form of droplets, which provide an energy reserve for some of food shortage, or may be used in reproduction. The utilization of lipid droplets for nutrition was studied by culturing specimens of two species, Eudiaptomus gracilis and Thermocyclops oithonoides G. O. Sars, in the absence of food. It was found that about half of the energy required for the 30-hour experimental period was obtained from the lipid droplets. However, not all the animal groups could use their lipid droplets and they had to use other reserves to satisfy their energy requirement. Lipid droplets seemed to have only a minor effect on the sinking rate of Eudiaptomus gracilis.     

On the presence of the genus Branchinecta Verrill, 1869 (Crustacea,Anostraca) in Yugoslavia

The genus Branchinecta Verrill, 1869 is represented in Yugoslavia by two species: Branchinecta ferox (Milne-Edwards, 1840) and Branchinecta orientalis G.O. Sars, 1901. The first species was collected in the steppe-like province of Banat, Pannonian Lowland, and in the lowland around the Skadar Lake, Montenegro, the second only in the province of Banat.On the basis of rich material of both species, a detailed study of the most essential morphological characters has been carried out and comparisons have been made with data in the literature. In B. ferox, significant morphological deviations are not found, whereas, in B. orientalis, essential features are clearly ascertained which were previously unknown or were not stated with sufficient precision. B. ferox is known to appear in small, temporary, natronsoda water rainpools, while B. orientalis has been found in a large temporary inundation pool with a high content of natronsoda and salt in the water.     

On species composition of northern pacific genera <Emphasis Type="Italic">Eurycope</Emphasis> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">Baeonectes</Emphasis> and Redescription of <Emphasis Type="Italic">E. ochotensis</Emphasis> Kussakin, 1979 (Crustacea,Isopoda)

Two northwestern Pacific species of the munnopsid subfamily Eurycopinae, Eurycope pavlenkoi Gurjanova, 1933 and E. ochotensis Kussakin, 1979 are transferred to the other genus of the subfamily, Baeonectes Wilson, 1982, on the basis of the following characteristics: short truncated epipod of maxilliped, broad rostrum without distinct margins, absence of a distomedial lobe of the article 1 of antenna 1, mandible with broad, rounded molar and long condyle and pereonites 5–7 fused dorsomedially. Based on the mentioned characters E. pygmaea G.O. Sars, 1870, which was put into the genus Tytthocope Wilson & Hessler, 1981 is also suggested to be transferred into the genus Baeonectes. After the clarification of the taxonomical position of the species, the geographical range of the genus Baeonectes expanded. In the Sea of Japan the genus was registered for the first time.     

Eudiaptomus anatolicus n.sp. (Copepoda: Calanoida) from Turkey

Eudiaptomus anatolicus n.sp. displays similarity to E. transylvanicus (Daday, 1890) by possessing an outer marginal spine located proximally on the second exopodite segment of the male right P₅, but it differs from this closest species in the presence of a chitinous projection on the second exopodite segment of the male right P₅, and in the typical shape of the female's thoracic wings. E. transylvanicus (Daday, 1890) has three chitinous processes located on the basipodite segment of the male right P₅, whereas Eudiaptomus anatolicus n.sp. has only one small process on this part. This new species is living in lake Poyraz, which is small and shallow. Some cladoceran species, namely, Pleuroxus truncatus (O.F. Müller, 1785), Pleuroxus laevis (Sars, 1862), Pleuroxus trigonellus (O.F. Müller, 1785), Simocephalus exspinosus (Koch, 1841), Eurycercus lamellatus (O.F. Müller, 1785), Alonella excisa (Fischer, 1854), Lathonura rectirostris (O.F. Müller, 1785), Pseudochydorus globosus (Baird, 1843) and two cyclopoid copepods, Megacyclops viridis (Jurine, 1820) and Eucyclops serrulatus (Fischer, 1851) share the same habitat. Freshwater ostracods (Crustacea: Ostracoda) of the subfamily Dolerocypridinae Triebel, 1961 from Southeast Asia

The systematics of the freshwater ostracods of the subfamily Dolerocypridinae in Southeast Asia is reviewed: A total of five species are known and they are assigned to three genera. Astenocypris papyracea (Sars) 1903 and Dolerocypris sinensis Sars, 1903 are redescribed. Dolerocypris fasciata (Müller) 1776, from Indonesia is figured and the hitherto observed variations are discussed. Dolerocypris pellucida Klie, 1932 is transferred to the genus Tanycypris Triebel, 1959.     

Armatalona gen. n. – a new genus of subfamily Aloninae (Anomopoda, Chydoridae), separated from genus Alona Baird, 1840

The little-known cladoceran Alona macrocopa Sars, 1894 and four related species differ from the majority of the genus Alona by unusual morphology of antenna and postabdomen. Only two species of the five, A. macrocopa Sars, 1894 and A. imitatoria Smirnov, 1989, are found to be valid. The species A. abbreviata Sars, 1895, A. duodontha Henry, 1922 and A. guernei Smirnov, 2001 are proved to be the synonims of A. macrocopa. The detailed morphology of appendages of A. macrocopa and A. imitatoria is studied for the first time. Analysis of morphology of the macrocopa-group reveals numerous characters clearly separating it from other species of Alona despite the wide diversity of this genus. Unusual morphology of the antenna, and the female and male postabdomen does not allow placement of the macrocopa-group in any other genera of Aloninae. So the new genus Armatalona gen. n. is suggested. This new genus is the highly specialized marginal genus of Aloninae, closely related only to the Australian endemic genus Pseudomonospilus Smirnov, 2001. The morphology of Armatalona gen. n. and its place within Aloninae are discussed.
