The "bound water" hypothesis has an adequate theoretical basis. A relatively slight adsorption of the solute along with water molecules (bound water) will explain the failure of certain technics to demonstrate the existence of bound water in biochemical systems.  相似文献

It is an axiom in biology that genes control the ontogeny and ultimately the final form of an organism. In plants a given morphological form can often arise through more than one ontogenetic pattern of cell divisions. Different ontogenetic patterns have different properties with regard to the final age in cell divisions of the initials in the meristems for a given morphological form. If mutation per genome per cell division is an important biological metric, then since the age of a cell in cell divisions is a function of ontogeny, the cellular ontogeny will influence the degree of mutation-loading in meristematic initials. Thus, ontogeny and form may affect the genes (by promoting or lessening genomic stasis) as well as, of course, being determined by the genes. This paper explores mathematically the relationship between different patterns of cell division and mutation-loading.  相似文献

1. Cyanide inhibits the oxidation of the SH groups of cysteine and denatured egg albumin by the uric acid reagent. 2. At pH 4.8 cysteine is oxidized by the uric acid reagent and by ferricyanide in the presence but not in the absence of added copper sulfate. 3. In neutral solution, the uric acid reagent oxidizes the SH groups of denatured egg albumin in the presence of urea but not in the presence of alkyl sulfate or in the absence of denaturing agents. 4. Ferricyanide oxidizes the SH groups of neutral denatured egg albumin even in the presence of alkyl sulfate or, if precautions are taken to avoid aggregation, in the absence of denaturing agents. 5. In acid solution, ferricyanide does not oxidize the SH groups of denatured egg albumin completely. The oxidation is more complete, however, in the presence of urea than in the presence of alkyl sulfate, and more complete in the presence of guanidine hydrochloride than in the presence of urea. 6. The uric acid reagent which does not oxidize the SH groups of neutral denatured but unhydrolyzed egg albumin in the absence of denaturing agents does, under the same conditions, oxidize the SH groups of egg albumin partially hydrolyzed by pepsin. 7. At pH 4.8 in alkyl sulfate solution ferricyanide oxidizes the SH groups of digested egg albumin more completely than the SH groups of denatured but undigested egg albumin.  相似文献

Transplanted hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) regenerate more rapidly in the femoral marrow of lethally irradiated hosts pretreated with cyclophosphamide (CY) 4 days prior to X-irradiation than they do in that of uninjected irradiated hosts (control). On the other hand, regeneration of HSC transplanted into irradiated hosts given CY 7 days before X-irradiation is slower than in controls.
The microenvironment in the femoral marrow was studied at various times after giving CY. Four days after injecting CY, the number of colony forming units (CFU), total nucleated hematopoietic cells, and mature myeloid and erythroid cells in the femoral marrow is markedly reduced. Seven days after injecting CY, the number of CFU in the femoral marrow is still reduced, the total nucleated cell count is back to normal, but the number of mature myeloid elements in the marrow are significantly increased. These observations suggest the conclusion that the rate of proliferation of HSC is modulated by the number of mature myeloid cells in the microenvironment.  相似文献

White , R. A. (U. Michigan, Ann Arbor.) Tracheary elements of the ferns. I. Factors which influence tracheid length; correlation of length with evolutionary divergence. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(5): 447–455. 1963.—To determine the variability of tracheid lengths in ferns, several factors were surveyed which might modify them. On the basis of average lengths based on from 100 to 300 measurements, the following factors were found to affect fern tracheid length significantly: location in the plant, stage of maturation of the plant, length of the internode, ploidy, and habitat. These factors were considered when a statistical analysis was made of the relationship between tracheid length and taxonomic divergence among the species of ferns. A Pearson's correlation coefficient was computed, based on average tracheid lengths from 221 species of ferns, and a divergence index based on 8 characters accepted as indicators of specialization or primitiveness in the ferns. A statistically significant correlation (at the 5% level) between length and divergence was found for root tracheids, but not for rhizome or petiolar tracheids. A better understanding of fern evolution is necessary before a more precise picture of length correlation and divergence in the ferns can be obtained.  相似文献
