Abstract

We numerically analysed 154 relevés of Potentillo chrysocraspedae–Festucetum airoidis in order to review the compositional variability of these grasslands, the main eco-floristic gradients and the representativeness of the lectotype. Apart from 30 small-sized clusters composed of singular or transitional relevés (outliers), three distinctive groups of 77, 19 and 12 communities were finally retained and denominated as typical (TP), closed (CL) and open (OP) facies, as they were significantly different in terms of total species cover. The three facies are well separated but do not form distinctive clusters in the non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination space. Juncus trifidus and Agrostis rupestris are the best differential species of OP and TP, respectively, whereas the best discriminator of CL is the higher cover of F. airoides. There are no significant differences between the three facies regarding altitude. The floristic structure of CL indicates poorer but moister soils compared with the other facies. CL may represent either a post-disturbance, recovery phase following sheep overgrazing and intensive trampling, or a late seral stage. OP gathers communities that are little disturbed and mainly occur on ridges and upper, sunny slopes. Although well distinguished floristically, TP is weakly defined in terms of homotoneity and complexity of the core species assemblage. The most representative relevé of TP is poorer in character species than the relevé lectotype (5 versus 12), the latter being classified as an outlier in terms of normal specific assemblage. Such patterns may reflect the spatio-temporal heterogeneity in alpine grasslands due to uncontrolled, intensive grazing and stochastic natural disturbances.  相似文献

Background: Habitat loss and fragmentation have been argued to drastically alter the composition of tree assemblages inhabiting small forest fragments but the successional trajectory experienced by such edge-affected habitats remains controversial.

Aims: Here we examine whether small fragments (3.4–91.2 ha) support seedling assemblages more similar to those in 10–70-year-old secondary forests than to those in mature forests, in order to infer to what extent fragments move toward early successional systems.

Methods: Using 59 0.1-ha plots distributed in a fragmented landscape of Brazilian Atlantic forest, we evaluated species richness and functional and taxonomic composition of seedling assemblages in 20 small forest fragments, 19 stands of secondary forest and 20 stands of mature forests in the interior of an exceptionally large fragment (ca. 3500 ha).

Results: Small fragments presented the least species-rich seedling assemblages (17.2 ± 5.7 species), followed by secondary (22.5 ± 5.3), and mature forest (28.4 ± 5.3). Small fragments had seedling assemblages with functional and taxonomic composition more similar to those in secondary than in mature forest. Small fragments had a greater relative richness and abundance of pioneer trees (ca. 40% more), vertebrate-dispersed (6–25%), and those bearing medium-sized seeds (30–70%), while large-seeded species and individuals were reduced (>50% decrement) in comparison to seedling assemblages in mature forest.

Conclusions: By comparing seedlings across a wide range of successional habitats we offer evidence that small forest fragments are experiencing an alternative successional pathway towards an early-successional system with reduced plant diversity.  相似文献

Abstract

This study is focused on the selection of variables affecting lichen and bryophyte diversity in Mediterranean deciduous forests. Plots representing two forest types (Fagus sylvatica and Quercus cerris forests) and two forest continuity categories (old‐growth (OG) and non‐OG forests) were selected in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park (Italy). The presence and the abundance of bryophytes and epiphytic lichens were recorded. Structural variables of the forests and vascular plant species richness have been used as predictors. A strong positive correspondence between the two groups of organisms was found. Higher species richness and the distribution of rare species are related to OG stands, while a qualitative (species composition) rather than a quantitative (species richness) difference between the two forest types was observed. Some species elsewhere considered as indicators of forest continuity, such as Lobaria pulmonaria, Antitrichia curtipendula, and Homalothecium sericeum, are associated with OG forests, independently from forest type, suggesting that they can be regarded as suitable indicators also in Mediterranean forests. Finally, our results suggest that old trees, high levels of basal area, a broad range of diameter classes, and high understory diversity are the main structural features affecting cryptogamic communities, while no correlation was found with the occurrence of deadwood.  相似文献

Species richness, community composition and ecology of cryptogamic epiphytes (bryophytes, macrolichens) were studied in upper montane primary, early secondary and late secondary oak forests of the Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica. Canopy trees of Quercus copeyensis were sampled with the aim of getting insight in patterns and processes of epiphyte succession and recovery of diversity in secondary forest following forest clearing. Species richness of cryptogamic epiphytes in secondary and primary forests were nearly the same, showing that primary forests are not necessarily more diverse than secondary forests. High species richness of secondary forests was presumed due to the closed canopy, resulting in permanently high atmospheric humidity in these forests. Similarity in species composition of secondary and primary forests increases with forest age, but after 40 years of succession one third (46 species) of primary forest species had not re-established in the secondary forest. Community composition in primary and secondary forests differed markedly and indicates that a long time is needed for the re-establishment of microhabitats and re-invasion of species and communities adapted to differentiated niches. Genera and species exclusive to primary forests are relevant as indicator taxa and conservation targets. Forty percent (68 species) of all species recorded are restricted to secondary forests, indicating the important contribution of secondary forest diversity to total species richness of the oak forests of Costa Rica.  相似文献

We address the question to which degree ridge habitats in tropical montane forests contribute to overall plant diversity by analysing patterns of pteridophyte (i.e. lycophytes and ferns) assemblages on ridges and slopes in three montane forest sites near Podocarpus National Park, Ecuador. The analyses, which involved 158 pteridophyte species (110 terrestrial, 96 epiphytic, 48 both) from 28 plots of 20 m × 20 m (or an equivalent of 400 m2), showed that more species were typical of one of the three study sites than of one of the two habitats (ridge/slope). As found in previous studies, alpha diversity on ridges was lower than on slopes, accounted for by the absence of numerous species that are found on slopes. Pteridophyte assemblages on ridges were more similar across study sites than those on slopes. Thus, unlike the structurally comparable (i.e. stunted, open) Amazonian forests, the studied montane ridge forests harbour fairly homogenous pteridophytes assemblages with very few specialised species. Our study implies that slope forests are of higher conservation priority for pteridophytes in the study region than ridge habitats. However, comparative studies are needed because other geographical regions and other groups of organisms may not share this pattern. We addressed whether ridges, which are ecologically distinct from slopes, harbor specialized plant assemblages with a high representation of endemic species. We surveyed pteridophytes in 28 plots each of 400 m2 in ridge and slope forests at 2,430–2,660 m at three different localities in southeastern Ecuador. Data analysis was based on those 147 species with reliable determinations and excluded 14 undetermined species. Range sizes were expressed as the latitudinal distance between the northern- and southernmost collections, and species were then assigned to range-size quartiles, with the 1st quartile including the 25% most widespread species, etc. Differences in species richness per range-size quartile were determined using G-tests and differences in abundance using ANOVAs. The recorded 147 fern species were represented by 21,800 individuals, including 106 terrestrial (7,300 individuals) and 98 epiphytic species (14,500). Ridges had fewer species than slopes, and there was no higher representation of localized species on ridges. Overall, widespread species were weakly (R²?=?0.03) but significantly more abundant than localized species. Ridges had significantly higher abundances of terrestrial – but not of epiphytic – species compared to slopes, especially among the widespread species of the 1st range-size quartile. The contribution of ridge habitats to overall pteridophyte diversity and as habitats for endemics in our study region is low. Methodologically, the separation of species into range-size classes in an ecological study is novel and effective, as statistically significant patterns were found only for species belonging to the 1st or 4th quartiles.  相似文献

Background: Trait-based assembly rules are a powerful tool in community ecology, used to explore the pattern and process of community structure (richness and composition).

Aims: A preliminary test for the utility of trait-based assembly rules in explaining cryptogamic epiphyte communities (lichens and bryophytes).

Methods: We sampled epiphytes from three different tree species (aspen, birch and pine), and from trees of contrasting age. The community composition of epiphyte species (taxon analysis) and functional groups (trait analysis) was summarised using multivariate ordination (nonmetric multidimensional scaling, NMDS).

Results: Ordination documented a widely observed pattern in which different tree species have taxonomically different epiphyte communities. However, NMDS sample scores were correlated to tree age in the trait-based analysis, but not in the taxon analysis.

Conclusions: Our results point to the existence of a common pattern in community traits during succession (on trees of different age) when measured for epiphyte communities with contrasting taxonomic composition. This pattern is evidenced by consistent trends in lichen growth form and reproductive strategy (sexual vs. asexual).  相似文献

In tropical forests, much of the plant diversity is due to a large number of congeneric taxa. It is unclear what ecological processes are responsible for the number and composition of co‐occurring species in these forests. Here, we present strong evidence that microhabitat heterogeneity may contribute to the coexistence of many different Inga species in just 100 ha. We examined their patterns of abundance and diversity in 75 transects related to the edaphic variables: soil water content, pH and soil texture at three different microtopographical units (ridges, slopes and valleys). We used two different approaches: Inga community level analyses and individual‐species analyses. Multivariate analyses, controlled for spatial autocorrelation, demonstrated that species show a distributional gradient mainly related to soil water content and to a lesser degree pH. Individual‐species analyses determined that obligate microhabitat restriction is uncommon: only 2 of 37 species analyzed were restricted to a single microhabitat. Habitat association analyses, however, identified a number of species characteristic of the ridge, slope and valley microhabitats. We conclude that the environmental setting plays an important role in the Inga community assembly but is not sufficient to explain the coexistence of 37 sympatric species at a single site.  相似文献

Background: Rock outcrops have been shown to provide specific conditions for bryophyte communities, but no studies have focused on the importance of microhabitats on such communities.

Aim: To analyse the distribution pattern of bryophyte species from granite and schist outcrops in three microhabitats (rock surfaces, fissures and cavities) in Portugal.

Methods: Sample plots were established in fissures, cavities and on rock surfaces of rock outcrops in north and central Portugal. Micro-scale variables, such as exposure and slope were assessed for each microhabitat.

Results: The microhabitats most different in species composition were surfaces versus cavities and surfaces versus fissures, both on granite and schist. Short-lived shuttle species tended to be associated with surfaces, and perennial species were more frequent in cavities and fissures. Both on granite and schist, the number of species found in each microhabitat was highest in cavities, followed by fissures and rock surfaces. The most relevant predictors of bryophyte richness were microhabitat type, exposure and rock type.

Conclusions: This investigation confirmed that rock microhabitats play an important role in bryophyte diversity by promoting habitat heterogeneity. In addition, our results clearly suggest local explanations for variation in bryophyte species richness and communities.  相似文献

Abstract

Background: Few studies analysing lichen diversity have simultaneously considered interactions among drivers that operate at different spatial and temporal scales.

Aims: The aims of this study were to evaluate the relative importance of host tree, and local, landscape and historical factors in explaining lichen diversity in managed temperate forests, and to test the potential interactions among factors acting at different spatial scales.

Methods: Thirty-five stands were selected in the ?rség region of western Hungary. Linear models and multi-model inference within an information-theory framework were used to evaluate the role of different variables on lichen species richness.

Results: Drivers at multiple spatial scales contributed to shaping lichen species richness both at the tree and plot levels. Tree-level species richness was related to both tree- and plot-level factors. With increasing relative diffuse light lichen species richness increased; this effect was stronger on the higher than on the lower part of the trunks. At the plot scale, species richness was affected by local drivers. Landscape and historical factors had no, or only a marginal, effect.

Conclusions: Lichen conservation in temperate managed forests could be improved if the complex interactions among host tree quality and availability, micro-climatic conditions, and management were taken into consideration.  相似文献

Background: Although lianas are important in forest ecosystems, information on the environmental factors influencing their diversity, structure and habitat associations is scanty.

Aims: This study had the aim of determining variation in liana diversity, structure and habitat associations across different topographic habitats, and the environmental factors influencing them, in the Penang Hill Forest Reserve, Malaysia.

Methods: Liana diversity, structure and habitat associations were examined in 30 plots, 40 m × 40 m, randomly demarcated within three topographic habitats (flatland, slope and valley). The physico-chemical properties of the soils in the plots were determined and the altitude and slope of the plots recorded.

Results: Liana species richness, diversity and structure varied significantly among the topographic habitats. Liana species richness, diversity and abundance variations were related to soil moisture, phosphorus content, pH and altitude, whereas liana diameter and basal area were associated with soil magnesium and slope. A total of eight species had a positive association with the habitat and a further six showed a negative association. Four species had a positive association with the flatland habitat, but only three and two species, respectively, with slope and valley habitats. The slope habitat gave the highest number of species that showed a negative association.

Conclusions: Liana diversity and structure varied between habitats. Some liana species showed different associations with specific habitats. Environmental variables were identified that influence liana diversity, structure and habitat associations. The study provides important information about the factors influencing liana success, and these will be of value in liana conservation and management in tropical forests.  相似文献

Aim The diversity changes that occurred in Central European forests during the early Holocene can be better understood using ecological knowledge of modern analogues of these forests, which occur in far Eastern Europe. Here we compare the diversity of vascular plants, bryophytes and snails among different forest types of the Southern Urals to provide insights into the palaeoecology of the vanished Central European forests. Location Southern Ural Mountains, Bashkortostan, Russia. Methods We recorded all species of vascular plants, ground-dwelling bryophytes and land snails, and measured biotic and abiotic variables, in 100-m2 plots located in four forest types dominated by different trees: Pinus sylvestris–Larix sibirica, Betula pendula–Populus tremula, Quercus robur and Acer platanoides–Tilia cordata–Ulmus glabra. These types correspond to the chronosequence of forest communities that occurred in Central Europe in the early Holocene. Results The species richness of herb-layer plants was most affected by the canopy-transmitted light. The former three forest types had open canopy and were rich in species, whereas the Acer–Tilia–Ulmus forests were darker and poor in species. The species richness of ground-dwelling bryophytes decreased from coniferous to broad-leaved deciduous forests. In contrast, the highest species richness of snails was in the Acer–Tilia–Ulmus forests owing to the higher calcium content in the litter of these trees. Main conclusions Based on the modern analogue of the Southern Ural forests, we propose the hypothesis that the late-glacial open-canopy pine and larch forests of Central European lowlands were rich in light-demanding species of vascular plants, many of which were also typical of tall-grass steppes or mesic grasslands. They also contained several species of ground-dwelling bryophytes. The spread of birch, aspen and oak in the early Holocene reduced the local species richness of ground-dwelling bryophytes but not of vascular plants. The subsequent spread of elm, lime, maple and ash caused canopy closure, a retreat of the light-demanding herbs and a decline in the local species richness of vascular plants. Besides the increased shading by these tree species, their litter enriched soils in calcium, and enhanced decomposition and nutrient cycling. This supported an increase in the species richness of land snails.  相似文献

Host traits partly determine the abundance and species richness of epiphytes in tropical forests. It has been proposed that older trees with rough bark and evergreens often house more individuals and more epiphytic species than those with thin, smooth, and peeling bark, which harbor few epiphytes. We hypothesize (i) that epiphytes are more abundant and species-rich in the more shaded forest, which is related to bark roughness, and (ii) that epiphytes are distributed in the middle of the host, where microenvironmental conditions are more favorable to survival. We evaluated abundance, species richness, and vertical distribution of epiphytes in two tropical dry forests, according to the deciduousness and basal area of the trees. Moreover, we selected the most abundant epiphytes to test whether their distribution is related to a specific bark type and examine their vertical distribution in two dry forests. We distinguished a high abundance and species richness of epiphytes in the deciduous forest, although basal area and host species richness were higher in the semi-deciduous forest. In both forests, we found a positive relationship between epiphyte abundance and basal area. Higher abundance of epiphytes was related to the predominance of Tillandsia schiedeana, a drought-adapted species, in both forests. Unexpectedly, epiphytes abundantly colonized Bursera simaruba, a host with peeling bark and a very branched crown, where small individuals of T. schiedeana colonized abundantly toward the top of the crown. Our results show the importance of the tropical dry forest, particularly, B. simaruba, in maintaining epiphyte diversity in terms of T. schiedeana colonization.  相似文献

Abstract

Some species intrinsically have a high invasiveness capacity, shown by high phenotypic plasticity and rapid growth, enabling a wide distribution across their native habitats and successful invasion in the introduced range. For such species, information from native habitats is critically important. An example is Glechoma hederacea, native to Eurasia but introduced and widespread in the USA. Our main objective was to investigate variation in traits of native G. hederacea populations across contrasting habitats: open, forest edge and understory. Vegetation was sampled and the ecophysiological and morphological traits were measured with accompanying environmental parameters. Results showed that in native habitats environmental conditions cover wide gradients of light and soil moisture. Plants had the highest cover in nutrient-rich, shaded habitats, representing the optimal habitat, indicating shade tolerance of G. hederacea. Plants from forest understory exhibited strong similarities in investigated traits to plants from the forest edge, even though this was a drier, sunnier habitat. Plants from open, sunny habitats experienced stress as indicated by the quantum efficiency of PSII and significantly higher sexual reproduction. Results show that G. hederacea is moderately tolerant simultaneously to shade and drought, a characteristic that has been reported for numerous invasive species, while at the same time it shares some characteristics with weedy plants.  相似文献

Abstract

This study describes the quantitative preferences of epixylic bryophytes for decay stages, log size and habitat type. The two habitats investigated were zonal (situated on plateaux without extreme microclimatic conditions) and ravine-like near-natural beech stands. Preferences of 30 bryophyte species are described using logistic regression modelling. The species pool differed between habitat types. In the ravine-like forests more species are found. Regionally rare epixylic species (mainly liverworts) were limited to these forests. The species richness of individual logs was also higher in the ravine-like than in the zonal forests and the proportion of logs of all sizes colonized by bryophytes was higher in the former. The species were classified into four categories on the basis of their preference for decay stages: strict epixylics, indifferent species, preferential epixylics and epiphytes. The epixylics and preferential epixylics prefer advanced decay stages while the latter extend further into earlier decay stages than strict epixylics. Common epixylic species have a wider tolerance to decay stage than rare ones. Probabilities of species occurrence increase with log size, more strongly in zonal stands than in ravines. A simple successional scheme for bryophyte succession on dead wood is proposed on the basis of the observed species responses.  相似文献

We provide total vascular plant species counts for three 1-ha plots in deciduous, semi-deciduous and evergreen forests in central Bolivia. Species richness ranged from 297 species and 22,360 individuals/ha in the dry deciduous forest to 382 species and 31,670 individuals/ha in the evergreen forest. Orchidaceae, Pteridophyta and Leguminosae were among the most species-rich major plant groups in each plot, and Peperomia (Piperaceae), Pleurothallis (Orchidaceae) and Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae), all epiphytes, were the most species-rich genera. This dominance of a few but very diverse and/or widespread taxa contrasted with the low compositional similarity between plots. In a neotropical context, these Central Bolivian forest plots are similar in total species richness to other dry deciduous and humid montane forests, but less rich than most Amazonian forests. Nevertheless, lianas, terrestrial herbs and especially epiphytes proved to be of equal or higher species richness than most other neotropical forest inventories from which data are available. We therefore highlight the importance of non-woody life-forms (especially epiphytes and terrestrial herbs) in Andean foothill forest ecosystems in terms of species richness and numbers of individuals, representing in some cases nearly 50% of the species and more than 75% of the individuals. These figures stress the need for an increased inventory effort on non-woody plant groups in order to accurately direct conservation actions. Background: Fragmentation can fundamentally alter the structure of tropical forests. However, the impacts of fragmentation may vary significantly among regions and lead to different outcomes.

Aims: We examined the structure, composition and dynamics of a forest fragment in Singapore to investigate reasons for the apparent resilience of this forest to long-term isolation.

Methods: We conducted 5 censuses of 12,688 trees ≥1-cm dbh in a 2-ha plot on the edge of the fragment between 1993 and 2012.

Results: Stem density and basal area were not significantly different between 1993 and 2012 and were typical of other south-east Asian forests. However, there were short-term decreases in both variables after droughts in 1997 and 2009, both followed by recovery. Total mortality rate over the 19 years was 3.3% year?1, considerably higher than other tropical forests in Asia, but it was balanced by high recruitment. The 10 most abundant species were primary forest species, pioneer species comprised <5% of all stems, and none of the 338 species in the plot was exotic. However, species abundances changed more than expected by chance for 86 species, and the rank order of the commonest species changed significantly. Species abundance changes were not related to known species traits.

Conclusions: Despite the long period of isolation, we found a surprising level of resilience of the Bukit Timah forest. While the forest may be more sensitive to the effects of climatic fluctuations at decadal time scales, there were very few signs of forest degradation in this diverse fragment of tropical forest.

Abstract

Both local and regional predictors play a role in determining plant community structure and composition. Climate, soil features as well as different local history and management affect forest understorey and tree species composition, but to date their specific role is relatively unknown. Few studies have addressed the importance of these predictors, especially in the Mediterranean area, where environmental conditions and human impacts have generated heterogeneous forest communities. In this study, the relationships between environmental variables and species richness of different groups of vascular plants (vascular species, woody species and open habitat species) and bryophytes were investigated in Tuscan forests. A total of 37 environmental variables were used by generalised linear model fitting in order to find parsimonious sub-sets of environmental factors (predictors) that are able to explain species diversity patterns at the local scale. Moreover, the role of regional and local variable groups on species richness of the considered plant groups was estimated by using the variance partitioning approach. We found that local variables, such as forest management and structure, explained more variance than regional variables for total species richness, open habitat species richness and bryophyte species richness. On the other hand, regional variables (such as elevation) played a central role for woody species richness.  相似文献
