Common reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. is one of the most widely distributed angiosperms with important ecological functions. In recent decades, it has been affected by a severe decline known as reed die-back syndrome (RDBS), the causal factors of which are still under investigation. Among the biotic factors that influence the dynamic of the reed population, the role of microorganisms is still poorly understood. During surveys carried out on P. australis populations in Central Italy, Claviceps-like sclerotia were detected: is Claviceps infection related to P. australis sexual reproduction and seed production? Could Claviceps infection be involved in the RDBS? These are the questions that we address. We characterized the sclerotia at the morphological, molecular, and chemical level and we demonstrated that they belong to Claviceps arundinis Pa?outová &; M. Kola?ík. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. arundinis on P. australis in Italy. Furthermore, the association of C. arundinis with RDBS was evaluated considering a set of macromorphological traits generally related to RDBS, such as P. australis clumping habit, culm height and diameter. No correlation was seen between the occurrence of C. arundinis and the declining status of reed populations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: In large and medium wetlands with extended reed beds Phragmites and cattail Typha dominated areas, Water Rails Rallus aquaticus and Little Crakes Zapornia parva show higher differences in nesting sites in contrast with other populations from small and fragmented wetlands, where the ranges of values for environmental variables at nesting sites overlap greatly.

Aims: To investigate the nesting sites and nesting habitats of both species to a fine scale, on medium and large wetlands, to evaluate the potential overlapping of nesting habitat and to compare data with those obtained in small wetlands.

Methods: In the study area, the Fize? Basin, Romania, 17 wetlands, ponds and reed beds ranging from 11.78 to 252.68 ha were investigated. The species were present on 4 wetlands, which were subsequently surveyed for nests. Between April and August 2010–2012, a total of 83 Water Rail and 46 Little Crake nests were found, measured and analysed in terms of nesting habitat and nest features.

Results: Principal component analyses suggest no overlap in nest site selection and a partial overlap in the nest features. An analysis of similarity confirmed significant nest structural differences. A discriminant function analysis highlights the main factors dividing the nest features of both species being: water depth and distance between the nest and a water surface. Little Crakes build their nests in cattail Typha sloped clumps, while Water Rails build their nests near reed Phragmites strains.

Conclusion: In large and medium wetlands, Water Rails nest deep in the reed bed rather than in other types of habitats, contrary to what has been reported for small ponds areas. Little Crakes nest in cattail independently of the size of the wetland where they occur.  相似文献

Summary

A chorionic opercular rim corolla contracts in response to submersion of eggs in water and dilates again when eggs dry. This “behavior” ceases in hatched and dead unhatched eggs. We suggest that contraction serves a group respiratory function. Egg clutches are sibships of high relatedness in close spatial proximity with shared susceptibilities. These factors suggest the possibility of various cooperative interactions especially in insects with elaborate chorionic structures.  相似文献

The effects of blue-green algal blooms on an emergent reed plant,Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., were investigated in a eutrophic lake in central Japan. The plants showed conspicuous withering of bottom leaves in spring of 1982, after an early occurrence of the bloom. In June, the plants in the area of algal infestation had about half the shoot length and dry weight of normalP. australis without the algal infestation. Reductions in water transparency, dissolved oxygen in bottom water and redox potentials of surface soil corresponded to the presence of algal bloom and plant damage.  相似文献

CapsuleTwo populations of the Eastern Great Reed Warblers, one close to settlements and one far away, differed mainly in nest losses which were higher at the latter site.

Aims To compare the breeding ecology of two Japanese populations, and with breeding data from Polish sites.

Methods We studied two sites in 1996. The Seimei site comprises a natural reed-bed (Phragmites australis) (2.0 ha) c. 2 km from residential areas. The Sakura site occurs as smaller reed-bed (0.8 ha) close to residential areas. Field study comprised mainly nest searching and nest monitoring.

Results Breeding density, nest height, number of stems supporting nest, clutch size and brood size were not significantly different between sites. The proportion of nests built on reed stems standing in the water (60%) was significantly higher at the Seimei site (P < 0.001), and the warblers in this habitat experienced significantly higher nesting failure (P < 0.05). Predation was a principal cause of failure at both sites. Significantly more nests suffered from predation at Seimei (53%) than at Sakura (16%). Breeding density was higher at both sites compared with European populations but it fell within ranges of other Japanese populations. Mean first-egg date of first brood does not differ between our sites and Polish ones.

Conclusion The differences between the two Japanese populations and between Japanese and Polish populations were relatively small and were seen mainly in nest losses, breeding density and proportion of nests built over water.  相似文献

为了了解干旱区湿地不同水分梯度下芦苇叶性状的构建模式及对不同水分环境的适应策略差异性,以敦煌阳关渥洼池湿地植物芦苇(Phragmites australis)为研究对象,分析不同水分梯度下芦苇叶性状对土壤水分的响应。结果表明:(1)低水分梯度下的叶厚度(LT)和叶片磷含量(LPC)显著高于中、高水分梯度(P0.05),高水分梯度下的叶碳含量(LCC)也显著高于中、低水分梯度(P0.05)。(2)芦苇叶性状之间的关系也因水分的变化而有所不同。就整体而言,叶片碳含量与叶干物质含量(LDMC)极显著正相关(P0.01);叶厚度与叶片磷含量极显著正相关(P0.01),比叶面积(SLA)与叶氮含量(LNC)极显著正相关(P0.01)、与叶碳氮比(C/N)极显著负相关(P0.01)。(3)在水分作为限制因素的条件下,叶片碳含量与比叶面积对水分的响应最为突出。土壤含水量与叶厚度、叶碳含量和叶片磷含量均显著负相关(P0.05)。芦苇在低水分环境下采取高收入低投入的积极型生存策略,高水分下则采取低获取高消耗的保守型生存策略,说明了芦苇在适应异质生境的自我调节机制。  相似文献

Background: The relationship between plant traits and environmental factors will be of value in understanding of functional strategies that plants have developed to cope with the environmental constraints on plant life in Mediterranean high mountain ecosystems.

Aims: The aims of this study were (1) to explore the variation in plant traits in relation to environmental variability; (2) to analyse the functional strategies of species; and (3) to assess the habitat constraints for the species in the study area.

Methods: We sampled the floristic composition of 76 1 m?×?1 m plots on five summits over 2,100 m above sea level in the mountains of the Sistema Central, Spain. Soil properties and temperature and grazing disturbance parameters were recorded. Eight plant traits were assessed in 21 species. Environmental variability and the co-variation of functional traits were analysed by RDA and PCA, respectively. Plant traits and environmental variability were related using fourth-corner analysis.

Results: Traits related to resource acquisition, such as leaf size and N concentration, varied with soil temperature and estimated summer water availability. Leaf dry matter content was found to be related to estimated water availability and soil pH. Seed mass was a factor of snow cover duration and water availability, and clonality to the duration of the vegetative period and estimated water availability. Grazing disturbance was related to the mean plant height of the species.

Conclusions: The results suggest that low temperatures, rather than water shortage, may be the principal limiting factor for resource acquisition in plants. Nevertheless species establishment is limited by water shortage during summer in these Mediterranean high mountain communities.  相似文献

Phragmites australis (Cav.)Trin. exSteud. is a perennial plant, largely relying on its rhizomes for resource storage, spreading and anchorage in the substrate. Vertical distribution and length of horizontal rhizomes ofPhragmites australis were investigated at the reed bed edge in a lake in southern Sweden. In deep water, horizontal rhizomes were relatively short and superficially situated in the substrate. It is hypothesised that this is an adaptation to water depth by keeping O2-transport distances through shoots and rhizomes as short as possible. In shallow water,P. australis rhizomes generally penetrated deeply into the substrate, probably improving anchorage and nutrient uptake possibilities. Further, horizontal rhizomes were longer in shallow water, which may increase the rate of vegetative spread. Because of these changes in rhizome architecture, “critical within-plant oxygen transport distances” did not change with water depth. This indicates thatP. australis maximises the extension of its rhizomes in relation to spatial differences in water depth. This may limit the ability ofP. australis to tolerate sudden temporal increases in water depth or eutrophication.  相似文献

Pythium species are economically significant soilborne plant pathogens with worldwide distribution, causing seedling damping-off or root rot diseases. Pythium phragmitis is a newly described pathogen of common reed (Phragmites australis), widespread in the reed-belt of Lake Constance, Germany. It is highly aggressive towards reed leaves and seedlings, but obviously does not affect roots. In the context of ‘reed decline’ phenomena, P. phragmitis infection of reed inundated during flooding events may be of particular significance. We could show that flooding itself is not necessarily detrimental for reed plants. In the presence of the pathogen, however, most submerged leaves and plants were killed within several weeks. Clipped plants did not show regrowth in the Pythium infested treatments. Significant losses in assimilating leaf area of reeds could, thus, be the result of Pythium infection rather than of flooding alone. Therefore, we suggest that the combination of extended flooding and the presence of P. phragmitis might considerably contribute to ‘reed decline’ at Lake Constance. In parallel, we could show that pathogenicity and spread of this species are considerably favoured by rising temperatures. Since an increase in average water temperature has been found for Lake Constance, we propose that P. phragmitis could be an important factor in the dieback of reed stands likely to be promoted by predicted climate change phenomena.  相似文献

Summary

Vicariance and dispersion both must be considered as possibilities for the fauna and flora of New Zealand and New Caledonia. Oligocene submersion, promoted by the geologists and several biologists, does not seem to have been total. Refuge stations must have existed in mountains and even in plains in some surrounding areas. From there the relicts must have radiated after the partial submersion. Certain “primitive” Chrysomelidae Eumolpinae (Bohumiljania spp.) are closely related to Patagonian genera. Their case is not unique among the terrestrial organisms of New Caledonia. How to explain the occurrence of Amborella in New Caledonia and of the tuataras in New Zealand, already very probably extinct elsewhere during the Paleogene?  相似文献

The fringing reeds (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., Poaceae) at Lake Constance-Untersee were mown or burnt in winter thereby drastically reducing the addition of decomposable organic matter to the sediment. The purpose of this study was to test whether or not this management significantly decreased the contents of organic matter and nutrients in the surface sediment layer and if the oxygen conditions in the withinreed water body improved. Hypotheses were tested by monitoring 6 treated reed beds and 3 reference fields over a period of up to 4 years. The sediment/water system of reed beds was found to be well buffered against the removal of the current year's crop of dead Phragmites straw, because only slight, and mostly insignificant, differences between treated and untreated reeds were detected. Hence, the benefit of winter reed harvesting to reduce nutrient overloading of the reed-belts and the die-back of reeds remains dubious.  相似文献

研究表型可塑性和遗传变异在植物表型分化中的相对作用,有助于预测全球环境变化下的植物群落组成和生态系统功能的变化。芦苇(Phragmites australis)是全球性广布的草本植物,种内变异丰富,在我国西北和东部均存在多个分化稳定的生态型,但中国芦苇在更大尺度上的表型研究还非常匮乏。将位于黄河上游的宁夏平原和黄河下游的黄河三角洲作为研究区域,通过野外调查和同质种植园实验对芦苇自然种群的植物功能性状变异进行观测。结果表明,无论在野外还是同质种植园,黄河三角洲芦苇的基径、叶长和叶宽均显著大于宁夏平原芦苇,说明两个地区的芦苇种群之间存在着受遗传决定的表型分化,这可能与两个地区间的降水等气候差异有关。在野外,宁夏芦苇的株高和叶厚显著大于黄河三角洲芦苇,但在同质园中差异消失或相反,说明株高、叶厚受环境影响较大,表型可塑性也是芦苇适应环境变化的重要机制。在同质种植园中,宁夏平原芦苇的叶片氮磷含量较低,但株数却显著多于黄河三角洲芦苇,反映了不同地区芦苇之间存在不同的适应策略,宁夏平原芦苇更偏向于高扩散率的杂草策略,而黄河三角洲芦苇更偏向于竞争策略。此外,宁夏平原芦苇的株高、叶长两个性状以及基径-比叶面积相关性在野外和同质园两个环境中存在一致性,表明了性状变异和权衡策略的遗传稳定性。综上,位于黄河上下游的芦苇种群间存在着适应性分化,这是表型可塑性和遗传变异共同作用的结果,不同来源芦苇对全球变化下的多重环境因子的响应还需要进一步研究。  相似文献

对于田地区3种不同生境(沼泽、盐化沙丘过渡带和沙丘顶)芦苇的生长环境特征、光合特性、渗透调节及抗氧化系统的特征进行研究。结果表明:芦苇叶片的Pn日变化在沼泽生境呈单峰曲线,在盐化沙丘过渡带和沙丘顶部均为双峰曲线,光合"午休"现象明显,气孔导度降低是其主要原因。脯氨酸和可溶性糖含量随根区土壤水分减少和盐分加剧增加显著,其中可溶性糖含量变化剧烈,对抵御干旱和盐渍化危害的贡献较大。芦苇叶片超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性随干旱及盐分加剧增加显著,两者对水分亏缺的响应较盐分敏感,且可有效缓解沙丘生境由于缺水所造成的氧化损伤,使丙二醛(MDA)含量维持在相对较低水平。过氧化物酶(POD)活性在沙丘和盐渍化生境内都比较高,对抵抗盐渍化和干旱起着同样重要的作用。  相似文献

A survey of recent publications shows that research on Phragmites australishas oftenapplied character because of the considerableecological and economic significance of the species.The main applications are water treatment, agriculture(food production or weed control) and natureconservation. In Europe, most research on natural reedstands has been motivated by reed die-back and effortstowards protection or restoration. Reed progressionand reed control have been the main concerns in otherparts of the world, and reed progression has alsoreceived increasing attention in Europe. While reeddie-back generally affects aquatic stands, progressioncan occur at both terrestrial and aquatic sites, andit can be desired (e.g. lake shore restoration)or unwanted (e.g. in species-rich fens ormarshes). Therefore, reed stands need to be assessedindividually to decide on management aims andappropriate methods. The varying status of Phragmites australisformed the background of the`European Reed Conference' held in Zürich/Switzerlandin October 1998. The seven contributions published inthis special issue are introduced with particularreference to differences between aquatic andterrestrial reed stands and to approaches used in theirassessment.  相似文献

Based on the experimental design proposed in similar studies, macromorphological and ecological traits of common reed beds were analysed at Lake Chiusi (Central Italy), together with selected chemical parameters in sediments and interstitial waters and aerial images of the site, in order to investigate reed decline and search for possible correlations among data. Typical symptoms of the reed dieback syndrome were detected, thus enlarging the occurrence of this phenomenon in southern Europe. Permanently dry, permanently flooded and partially flooded stands show different levels of decline, with the permanent flooding always co-occurring with reed dieback. Only few of the considered chemical parameters seem to play a role in reed decline (nitrates, rubidium, nickel, barium, manganese), although no clear pattern was identified. Data suggest that the co-occurrence of some chemicals with stressing conditions might affect the growth even of an efficient metal accumulator, as reed is generally considered.  相似文献

Lake Velencei is a shallow soda lake with extensive reed coverage. In this study, the bacterial communities of reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel) rhizomes from healthy and declining stands were compared. Inner and outer rhizome surfaces were sampled. Samples were plated and isolated in September 1998 and June 1999. Phenotypic data of 371 bacterial strains were used for cluster analysis. Identification of phena was based on partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis of representative strains. Healthy reed stand rhizomes in fall 1998 were dominantly colonised by facultatively fermentative organisms, like Erwinia billingiae, Aeromonas sobria, Pantoea agglomerans, and Pseudomonas azotoformans. In the June 1999 sample, mainly Kocuria rosea and various Bacillus spp. dominated. In declining stands of September 1998, a saprotrophic community was found: Acinetobacter spp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Curtobacterium luteum, Agrobacterium vitis, and two further groups representing presumably new taxa. In June 1999, reed rhizomes were colonised by Kocuria rosea, but Dietzia maris and Bacillus cohnii could be isolated as well. Healthy and declining reed stand rhizomes can be distinguished based on the culturable bacterial community. No obligately plant pathogenic bacteria were found, however the possibility of a local, opportunistic bacterial invasion can not be ruled out (e.g. Curtobacterium). The presence of potentially beneficial bacterial species was demonstrated in the healthy reed rhizome rhizosphere (e.g. Pseudomonas azotoformans, Pantoea agglomerans).

In the Sanjiang Plain (North East China), narrowleaf small reed (Deyeuxia angustifolia) usually distributes widely in typical meadow or marsh, while reed (Phragmites australis), the concomitant species, is distributed sparsely in the D. angustifolia communities or relative open sites. To date, the mechanisms responsible for their different distribution patterns are far from clear. Both water level and light are important factors determining plant distribution in wetland ecosystems and therefore, the aim of this paper was to identify the role of these two factors and their potential interaction on plant distribution in this plain. Growth responses and biomass allocation of the two macrophytes were investigated by growing them in three irradiances (300, 100, 20 μmol m−2 s−1) and two water levels (0 and 5 cm) under greenhouse conditions. Biomass accumulation, mean relative growth rate (RGR), height and mean relative elongation rate (RER) of both species significantly decreased with the reduction of light availability. Biomass accumulation, RGR, height and RER of P. australis were significantly inhibited by higher water level. However, water level had no effect on the growth of D. angustifolia. Stem mass fraction was higher at 0-cm water level in D. angustifolia, and was not affected by water level in P. australis. These data suggest that D. angustifolia has a higher adaptive ability to acclimate to flooding and shade stresses than does P. australis, which might be an important reason for their different distribution patterns.  相似文献

This study describes the long-term changes of spatial patterns of cut-sedge (Cladium mariscus) and common reed (Phragmites australis) in the Spanish floodplain wetland Las Tablas de Daimiel. Using seven sets of aerial photographs, we determined changes in their spatial patterns (size of patches) between 1945 and 2001 that resulted from combinations of natural change and anthropogenic stress (irrigated agriculture, waste water discharge, fire, ploughing). Our approach consisted in using 1 ha cells as units of spatial resolution in principal coordinates of neighbour matrices and spatial correlograms to assess the spatial scale of interest and spatial patterns at (1) the whole wetland and (2) two areas of the wetland with locally contrasting biophysical settings and anthropogenic stress history. Results showed that vegetation spatial patterns were influenced by natural variability until the 1970s. Thereafter, anthropogenic perturbation became the main driver of vegetation change, especially in the lower part of the wetland where local impacts were stronger. Natural variability did not fragment cut-sedge patches, and the effects of biological traits were less important for its spatial pattern. By contrast, man-made change resulted in a marked cut-sedge cover decrease and patch fragmentation, and the importance of its biological traits on spatial patterns increased. The trends of reed spatial patterns were generally opposite to, but not as clear as those for, cut-sedge. The trends of spatial patterns were especially evident at very broad (3,500–10,000 m) and broad (1,000–3,400 m) spatial scales. Competition for space and abiotic factors (water quality and water depth) were not strong predictors of cover variability at the 1-ha scale, particularly in the lower area of the wetland. This suggests that other environmental variables need to be considered in spatially explicit modelling of vegetation spatial patterns in wetlands. Consideration of spatial hierarchies and species-specific ecological traits is paramount to the conservation of degraded wetlands.  相似文献
