Early ontogenetic shells of Limopsis angusta, L. aurita, L. cristata, L. friedbergi and L. minuta are described in detail and their morphogenetic traits discussed in a phylogenetic context. Prodissoconch length is found to range from 170-370 µm discounting the so-called prodissoconch 2 stage of authors. Reports of such a stage refer to the early postlarval 'interdissoconch'. Prodissoconch sizes are indicative of lecithotrophy but not of brooding. Limopsid-like prodissoconchs are rather common among pteriomorphs and at present of little use for phylogenetic interpretations, therefore. The early postlarval hinge is characterized by two tooth generations: an early one, (G1), representing the postlarval continuation of provincular teeth, and a late one, (G2), representing the independent adult dentition. This is a plesiomorphic trait for Pteriomorphia. The postlarval ligament is continuous with the larval resilium; it is neither co-functional with nor is it substituted by the typical duplivincular ligament as in other arcoids. Occasionally developed ridges, gutters or multiplication of ligament sublayers remain restricted to the primordial resilifer. It is concluded that the limopsid adult ligament represents a fusion of adult sublayer repetition within a retained larval resilium, a phenomenon best described as a heterochronic process. Comparisons with homologous characters of other arcoids support the view that Limopsidae evolved from parallelodontid arcoids and that they gave rise to Philobryidae but not to Glycymerididae.  相似文献

Several strains of cytophaga-like gliding bacteria (CLB) were isolated as numerically dominant or codominant components of bacterial populations associated with proteinaceous hinge ligaments of cultured juvenile Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. These bacteria were morphologically similar to long, flexible bacilli occurring within degenerative lesions in oyster hinge ligaments. Among bacteria isolated from hinge ligaments, only CLB strains were capable of sustained growth with hinge ligament matrix as the sole source of organic carbon and nitrogen. In vitro incubation of cuboidal portions of ligament resilium with ligament CLB resulted in bacterial proliferation on the surfaces and penetration deep into ligament matrices. Bacterial proliferation was accompanied by loss of resilium structural and mechanical integrity, including complete liquefaction, at incubation temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees C. The morphological, distributional, and degradative characteristics of CLB isolated from oyster hinge ligaments provide compelling, albeit indirect, evidence that CLB are the agents of a degenerative disease affecting juvenile cultured oysters. The motility, metabolic, and hydrolytic characteristics of hinge ligament CLB and the low moles percent G + C values (32.4 to 32.9) determined for three representative strains indicate that they are marine Cytophaga spp.  相似文献

The capsular ligaments of the human hip joint were submitted to exact morphological analysis, and they proved to be multiple and numerous. We have described various ligamentous systems and their interconnections, and have suggested new terminologies and systematics. The ligaments were subjected to functional analysis by means of measuring strips to determine the positions in which the ligaments are taut. The ligament systems were all found to serve a restrictive function, and various parts of the apparatus restricted all possible movements in the hip joint. Extension is restricted by the medial iliofemoral complex, abduction by the pubofemoral ligament, and adduction by the posterior coxal ligaments and by the superior ischiofemoral ligament. Flexion is restricted by the inferior ischiofemoral ligaments, inward rotation by the superior ischiofemoral ligament, and outward rotation by the lateral iliofemoral complex. Only the ligament of the femoral head is unable to exert a restricting function, despite reaching a state of tension in extreme adduction.  相似文献

Injuries to the lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle joint are among the most frequently occurring injuries at the lower limb. The present study was conducted for the purpose of establishing the basis for the development of a quantitative diagnostic procedure for such injuries. To achieve this goal, the effect of four types of ligament injuries on the three-dimensional mechanical characteristics of the ankle were investigated. These types of injuries consisted of: 1) isolated tear of the anterior talofibular ligament; 2) isolated tear of the calcaneofibular ligament; 3) isolated tear of the posterior talofibular ligament; and 4) combined tear of both the anterior talofibular ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament. The experiments were conducted on 31 amputated lower limbs and consisted of comparing the three-dimensional load-displacement and flexibility characteristics of the ankle joint prior to and following sectioning of selected ligaments. The experimental and analytical procedures used to derive these characteristics was developed previously by the authors. From the results of this study it was concluded that the three-dimensional flexibility characteristics of the ankle joint are strongly influenced by damage to the lateral collateral ligaments. Furthermore, it was found that each type of ligament injury produced unique and identifiably changes in the flexibility characteristics of the ankle. These unique changes, which are described in detail in this paper, can be used to discriminate between the different types of ligament injuries. Consequently, it was concluded that it is feasible to develop a quantitative diagnostic procedure for ankle ligament injuries based on the effect of the injury on the flexibility characteristics of the ankle.  相似文献

The prominent accessory lobes of Lachi in birds are considered to be marginal nuclei; similar nuclei have been implicated in mechanoreceptive functions in snakes and lampreys. Reptile studies emphasized the involvement of the denticulate ligament with this mechanoreceptive function. This investigation examines the fine structure of the accessory lobes of Lachi in pigeons and their interaction with ligaments for features which might support such a mechanoreceptive function. In the lumbosacral area of the spinal cord, the lateral longitudinal ligaments and the ventral longitudinal ligament are hypertrophied. The ventral transverse ligaments are present only within the lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord and they interconnect with the lateral and ventral longitudinal ligaments. The lateral longitudinal ligament makes intimate contact with the spinal cord, and many glial processes from the spinal cord mingle with and are firmly attached to collagenous fibers of the ligament. The lobes lie dorsal to the lateral longitudinal ligament in the exact area where it interconnects with the transverse ligament. The lobe's multipolar neurons have a number of synaptic contacts but no unusual specializations were noted. Most of each lobe is composed of interdigitating saccular structures filled to varying degrees with flocculent material. The sacs are extensions of the cytoplasm of neuroglial cells, which also give rise to membranes surrounding neuronal processes and the sacs themselves. A possible functional relationship of the lobes and the ligaments of the lumbosacral spinal segments within the vertebral column is described.  相似文献

The influence of the different lumbar spinal ligaments on intersegmental rotation is not fully understood. In order to explore this effect, a finite element model of the functional spinal unit L3/L4 was loaded with pure moments in the three main anatomic planes. The two extremes--minimum and maximum--ligament stiffness values reported in the literature were applied. After virtual transection of each of the spinal ligaments in turn, the intersegmental rotation and forces in the remaining ligaments were calculated. On flexion, the highest force was found for the posterior longitudinal ligament; on extension and lateral bending for the anterior longitudinal ligament; and on axial rotation for the facet capsular ligament. The strongest influence on intersegmental rotation is exerted by the interspinous ligament on flexion, by the anterior longitudinal ligament on extension and lateral bending, and by the facet capsular ligaments on axial rotation. Ligament stiffness has a strong influence on intersegmental rotation and forces in the ligaments, so that finite element models of spinal segments must be validated by experimental data. This study should help to elucidate the role of the various ligaments.  相似文献

Five genera of Miocene bivalves evolved antipredatory adaptations in response to predation by drilling naticid gastropods. I examined the evolution of two traits affecting predator‐prey interaction, prey shell thickness (TH) and internal volume (IV). Thickness controls predation costs by determining drilling time, and internal volume influences the benefit derived by the predator.

Internal volume showed no consistent pattern of temporal change among the taxa studied. IV fluctuated nondirectionally during the history of most genera, though both increasing and decreasing trends occurred within species ofAstarte. In contrast, all five genera exhibited significant thickness increases (from 8–157%) during the three‐million‐year interval. Both gradual intraspecific and interspecific directional changes occurred. Taxa with the greatest predation intensities displayed the most change, suggesting that predation selected for the thickness increases. Increased thickness apparently reduced predation; a significant negative correlation between TH and predation intensity occurred within four of the bivalve genera. Improvement of predator capabilities apparently did not keep pace with increased antipredatory morphologic adaptations over the interval studied.  相似文献

In the families Pectinidae and Propeamussidae (scallops) the massive rounded inner ligament layer which provides the opening thrust is bounded by long stretches of anterior and posterior outer ligament layer which, in the absence of teeth, maintain alignment of the valves. In the Spondylidae these outer layers migrate centrally to unite on either side of the inner layer, the primary ligament becoming transversely instead of longitudinally disposed. A secondary ligament of fused periostracum with no tensile strength unites the still long hinge line but secondary ball and socket teeth assume responsibility for alignment of the valves. In the Plicatulidae and the Dimyidae there is the same transverse disposition of the primary ligament but the mantle margins overarch this with production of a continuous longitudinal "external" secondary ligament above the "internal" primary ligament. Although resemblances with the Spondylidae are greater than with the Pectinidae and Propeamussidae, differences from all three are great enough to justify separation of the other two families into a new superfamily Plicatulacea. The monomyarian condition in the Plicatulidae could well have arisen from conditions similar to those in the Dimyidae, that is following cementation when dimyarian and not following byssal attachment as it does in the three families of the now proposed restricted Pectinacea.  相似文献

Birds have developed different behavioural strategies to reduce the risk of predation during the breeding period. Bird species that nest in the open often cover their eggs to decrease the risk of predators detecting the clutches. However, in cavity nesters, the potential functions of egg covering have not been explored despite some bird species that nest in cavities also covering their eggs as open nesters do. We analysed whether egg covering is an antipredatory behaviour in the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). We simulated an increase in the perceived risk of predation at experimental nests by adding predator scent inside the nest boxes during the egg‐laying period, whilst adding lemon essence or water to control nest boxes. Birds exposed to predator chemical cues in the nest of experimental pairs more frequently covered their eggs than birds exposed to an odorous control. These results suggest that egg covering may have evolved as an antipredatory behaviour also in cavity nesters to reduce the risk of egg predation and thus increase reproductive success in birds.  相似文献

The morphology of the jaw suspension and jaw protrusion mechanism in lamniform sharks is described and mapped onto a cladogram to investigate how changes in jaw suspension and protrusion have evolved. This has revealed that several evolutionary modifications in the musculoskeletal apparatus of the jaws have taken place among lamniform sharks. Galeomorph sharks (Carcharhiniformes, Lamniformes, Orectolobiformes, and Heterodontiformes) have paired ethmopalatine ligaments connecting the ethmoid process of the upper jaw to the ethmoid region of the cranium. Basal lamniform sharks also acquired a novel single palatonasal ligament connecting the symphysis of the upper jaw to the cranium mid-ventral to the nasal capsule. Sharks in the family Lamnidae subsequently lost the original paired ethmopalatine ligament while retaining the novel palatonasal ligament. Thus, basal lamniform taxa (Mitsukurina owstoni, Carcharius taurus, Alopias vulpinnis) have increased ligamentous support of the lateral region of the upper jaw while derived species (Lamnidae) have lost this lateral support but gained anterior support. In previous studies the morphology of the jaw suspension has been shown to play a major role in the mechanism of upper jaw protrusion in elasmobranchs. The preorbitalis is the primary muscle effecting upper jaw protrusion in squalean (sister group to galeomorphs) and carcharhiniform (sister group to lamniforms) sharks. The preorbitalis originates from the quadratomandibularis muscle and inserts onto the nasal capsule in squalean and carcharhiniform sharks. Carcharhiniform sharks have evolved a subdivided preorbitalis muscle with the new division inserting near the ethmoid process of the palatoquadrate (upper jaw). Alopid sharks have also independently evolved a partially subdivided preorbitalis with the new division inserting at the base of the ethmoid process and surrounding connective tissue. Lamnid sharks have retained the two preorbitalis divisions but have modified both of the insertion points. The original ventral preorbitalis division now inserts onto the connective tissue surrounding the mid-region of the upper jaw, while the new dorsal preorbitalis division inserts onto the surrounding connective tissue and skin at a more posterior position on the upper jaw. The retractor muscle of the jaws, the levator hyomandibularis, has also been modified during the evolution of lamniform sharks. In most sharks, including basal lamniforms, the levator hyomandibularis inserts onto the hyomandibula and functions to retract the jaws after protrusion. In alopid and lamnid sharks the levator hyomandibularis inserts primarily onto the upper and lower jaws around the jaw joint and is a more direct route for retracting the jaws. Thus, there has been at least one instance of character loss (ethmopalatine ligament), acquisition (palatonasal ligament), subdivision (preorbitalis), and modification (ventral preorbitalis, dorsal preorbitalis, and levator hyomandibularis) in the ligaments and muscles associated with the jaw suspension and jaw protrusion mechanism in lamniform sharks. While derived lamniform sharks (Lamna nasus, Carcharodon carcharius, and Isurus oxyrinchus) lost the ancestral passive lateral support of the ethmoid articulation of the upper jaw, they simultaneously acquired muscular support by way of the levator hyomandibularis, which provides a dynamic mechanism for lateral support. The evolution of multiple divisions of preorbitalis insertions onto the palatoquadrate and modification of the levator hyomandibularis insertion directly onto the jaws provides an active mechanism for multiple protractions and retractions of the upper jaw, which is advantageous in those sharks that gouge or saw pieces from large oversized prey items.  相似文献

An exceptionally well-preserved specimen of Lithiotis problematica from the Lower Jurassic of NE Italy possesses multiple resilia, composed of thin fibres and joining both valves, housed in ligamental grooves. The resilia were modified to allow small changes in the reciprocal distance of the valves. This increased the area in which the extremely thin free valve flexed to allow shell closure, and reduced the risk of breakage by fatigue of the valve and/or ligament. The fact that the valves remained connected by ligament for an extended height of the ligamental area implies that (1) the free valve closed by flexing, not by articulating, (2) it did not migrate in the ventral direction as often observed in cemented bivalves, and (3) it was approximately as long as the attached one.  相似文献

The oral arm plates of the brittlestar Ophiura ophiura L. are connected to lateral arm plates at distal and proximal ligamentous junctions. The distal junction is mobile and is disrupted during arm autotomy; the proximal junction is more rigid and does not participate in autotomy. Aspects of the morphology and mechanical properties of the distal and proximal oral arm plate ligaments have been investigated in order to determine if their tensility is under physiological control. By means of creep tests it was found that elevation of the external potassium (K+) ion concentration causes a decrease in the viscosity of the distal ligament which is either transient or continues until rupture intervenes. In forced vibration tests the distal ligament often shows a biphasic stiffening then softening response to excess K - ions. Anaesthetics block the softening phase but enhance the stiffening component of this response. This ligament is also softened by repetitive electrical stimuli but stiffened by excess calcium ions and by acetylcholine. The proximal ligament appears to have the capacity for only transient changes in mechanical properties. Both ligaments are penetrated by the processes of juxtaligamental cells whose perikarya are arranged in clusters innervated by hyponeural nerves. These cells are thought to modulate the interfibrillar cohesion of the ligaments. It is concluded that the distal and proximal ligaments are mutable collagenous structures which in their stiffened condition help to maintain arm posture without the need for continuous muscular activity, and that at autotomy the distal ligament undergoes a profound loss of tensile strength which facilitates arm detachment.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of the lengths of the ligaments in human knee joint specimens. The ligaments considered were the lateral collateral, medial collateral, anterior cruciate and posterior cruciate. The ligament length patterns were determined for twelve specimens at flexions of 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120°, in neutral, internal rotation and external rotation at each angle. The collateral ligaments steadily diminished by about 20 per cent in length from 0 to 120° flexion, rotation having little effect. The anterior cruciate gradually increased 10 per cent from 0 to 120° flexion and the posterior cruciate, was 10 per cent longer at 0° flexion than at all other angles for which length was constant. The action of the cruciates was therefore somewhat reciprocal. Rotation had a significant effect on cruciate lengths, affecting the anterior more than the posterior cruciate. Computations were made of the change in length of the anterior and posterior fibres of each cruciate ligament, in relation to the central fibres. Reciprocal functions between fibres were demonstrated.  相似文献

The Triassic fossil record points to the monophyly of the Pectinoidea (scallops), all members of which have a triangular resilium with a nonmineralized medial core that functions below the hinge line. The elastic properties of this resilium in extant taxa predict that the initial adaptation of the Pectinoidea was to swimming. This is indeed corroborated by the shell form of Pernopecten , the earliest known pectinoidean genus, which ranged from late Devonian to earliest Triassic. The new family Entolioididae, a largely Triassic group, provides the missing link between the Pernopectinidae and the families Propeamussiidae, Entoliidae, and Pectinidae, all of which originated by the Middle Triassic and survive to the present day. A new Triassic genus Filamussium shows that the Propeamussiidae originated from the Entolioididae, not directly from the Pernopectinidae as previously supposed. Evidence from morphology, the fossil record, and molecular genetics indicates that the family Spondylidae originated in the Middle Jurassic from an ancestor within the Pectinidae, possibly the genus Spondylopecten , which was already present in the Late Triassic. Summary The collateral ligaments can be clearly distinguished in the 25-day fetal rabbit knee joint. Types I and V collagens are present in the extracellular matrix between the cells of the lateral and medial collateral ligaments and this distribution persists until the rabbit is skeletally mature. From 8 months onwards type III collagen is also present, particularly around the cells. Type I collagen mRNA is expressed by the cells from the 25-day fetal to 8-month-old adult ligament. The ligament sheath is composed of types III and V collagens. The cruciate ligaments are present between the femur and tibia in the 20-day fetus. The matrix is composed of types I and V collagens from the 25-day fetus until at 12- to 14-weeks postnatal, type III collagen appears in the pericellular regions together with type V. At 8 months and 2 years, the amount of type III collagen has increased. All the cells express the mRNA for type I collagen at 12- to 14-weeks, but only isolated cells express this mRNA at 8 months. Thus, both the collateral and cruciate ligaments undergo changes in their complement of collagens during postnatal development and ageing. The implications of these complex interactions of different types of collagen are discussed in relation to healing and the surgical replacement of torn ligaments by tendons.  相似文献

The areas of the femoral origin of the cruciate ligaments have approximately the shape of sectors of ellipses, the one for the anterior ligament on the lateral condyle posteroproximally and the one for the posterior ligament on the medial condyle distally. By means of a new technique of dissection, combined with the use of X-rays, the change in distance between the origin and insertion and so the change of tension of single bundles of the ligaments could be analyzed. Only a rather thin bundle in each cruciate ligament is in constant tension: "guiding bundles." The maximal diminution of distance between the origin and insertion for some bundles is 65%. In the anterior cruciate ligament the majority of fibres are taut in extreme extension: "limiting bundles." The same is true in the posterior cruciate ligament in extreme flexion. There are also some fibres, especially in the posterior cruciate ligament, that are taut only in an intermediate position. The geometric analysis of the function of different groups of fibers was performed by a modification of Menschik's concept of a four-bar link.  相似文献

Recruitment of knee joint ligaments   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
On the basis of earlier reported data on the in vitro kinematics of passive knee-joint motions of four knee specimens, the length changes of ligament fiber bundles were determined by using the points of insertion on the tibia and femur. The kinematic data and the insertions of the ligaments were obtained by using Roentgenstereophotogrammetry. Different fiber bundles of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments and the medial and lateral collateral ligaments were identified. On the basis of an assumption for the maximal strain of each ligament fiber bundle during the experiments, the minimal recruitment length and the probability of recruitment were defined and determined. The motions covered the range from extension to 95 degrees flexion and the loading conditions included internal or external moments of 3 Nm and anterior or posterior forces of 30 N. The ligament length and recruitment patterns were found to be consistent for some ligament bundles and less consistent for other ligament bundles. The most posterior bundle of each ligament was recruited in extension and the lower flexion angles, whereas the anterior bundle was recruited for the higher flexion angles. External rotation generally recruited the collateral ligaments, while internal rotation recruited the cruciate ligaments. However, the anterior bundle of the posterior cruciate ligament was recruited with external rotation at the higher flexion angles. At the lower flexion angles, the anterior cruciate and the lateral collateral ligaments were recruited with an anterior force. The recruitment of the posterior cruciate ligament with a posterior force showed that neither its most anterior nor its most posterior bundle was recruited at the lower flexion angles. Hence, the posterior restraint must have been provided by the intermediate fiber bundles, which were not considered in the experiment. At the higher flexion angles, the anterior bundles of the anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament were found to be recruited with anterior and posterior forces, respectively. The minimal recruitment length and the recruitment probability of ligament fiber bundles are useful parameters for the evaluation of ligament length changes in those experiments where no other method can be used to determine the zero strain lengths, ligament strains and tensions.  相似文献

Menispermaceae are a pantropical and temperate family with an extensive fossil record during the Paleogene period, especially in North America and Europe, but with much less evidence from Asia. The latest fossil evidence indicates a succession of tropical to subtropical flora on the central Tibetan Plateau during the Paleogene. However, the biogeographic histories of these floras are still unresolved. Here, we report on endocarps and leaves of Menispermaceae from the Middle Eocene of Jianglang village, Bangor County, central Tibetan Plateau. The endocarps belong to two genera: Stephania, which is characterized by a horseshoe-shaped endocarp and with one lateral crest ornamented by spiny to rectangular ribs, and a condyle area; and Cissampelos (s.l.), which has two characteristic lateral ridges and a conspicuous external condyle. Associated leaves belong to the genus Menispermites, and are characterized by actinodromous primary venation, brochidodromous secondary veins, entire margins, and the presence of marginal secondary veins. The biogeographic history of Menispermaceae is complex, but evidence from these new fossils indicates an early diversification of the group in Asia, probably in response to the warming climate during the Eocene. The Jianglang flora appears to be part of a boreotropical flora, connecting Asia with North American and European floras during the Middle Eocene. The modern distribution of menispermaceous taxa found in Jianglang, as well as other families represented in the Jianglang flora, show that a tropical to subtropical climate occurred during the Eocene in central Tibet.  相似文献

Predation imposes selection on the ability of prey to recognize and respond to potential threats. Many prey species detect predators via chemoreception, particularly in aquatic environments. Also, chemical cues from injured prey are often perceived as an indication of predation risk. However, because antipredatory behavior can be costly, prey responses should depend on the current level of risk that each predator poses, which may depend on the type of chemical cues detected. We exposed larval newts, Triturus pygmaeus, to chemical cues from predator larval beetles or to alarm cues from conspecific larval newts and examined the behavioral changes of larval newts. Results showed that larval newts reduced activity levels when conspecific alarm cues were present but not when the predator cues alone were present. These results might suggest that larval newts are unable to recognize predator chemicals. To avoid costs of unnecessary antipredatory behaviors, larval newts may benefit by avoiding only predators that represent a current high level of threat, showing only antipredatory responses when they detect conspecific alarm cues indicating that an actual predatory attack has occurred.  相似文献
