Interactions between the larvae of Mirogrex terraesanctae (Steinitz, 1952) in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and their zooplankton prey were studied experimentally. Prey species preference and size selectivities were measured. Larvae were hatched in the lab from eggs collected in the field, and fed different food items in various concentrations. The food items included lake zooplankton, algae, and commercial pellets. It was shown that small, first feeding larvae (7–8.5 mm SL) prefer small bodied zooplankters (< 180 µ). The effect of these food sources on larval growth was measured. It was found that larval Mirogrex grew at a higher rate when fed zooplankton prey sized from 63 µ–250 µ. Food items smaller than 63 µ, larger than 250 µ and Scenedesmus sp., produced less than optimal growth rates. The importance of Mirogrex feeding habits and their potential influence on the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

Recently the gut fluorescence technique has been critisized because of the possible degradation of chlorophyll into nonfluorescent derivatives during passage through copepod guts and changes of the gut passage time with food concentration. Here pigment budgets have been calculated in 6 experiments with Calanus finmarchicus CIV caught 2 km offshore of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (the Barents Sea, Dalnije Zelentsi) in September 1992. Copepods were fed with culture of Platymonas viridis at different concentrations. Gut pigment and ingestion rate increased with food concentration in a similar way. On average between 78% and 89% of ingested chlorophyll was recovered in the guts and faecal pellets. No trend for a greater loss of fluorescence at low food concentration than at high was observed. Pigment content of faecal pellets incubated in filtered seawater decreased by 20–30% in the first 7–12 h and by up to 60% in 48 h. The decline of pigment content was accompanied by a rapid bacterial growth (by a factor of 3 in 48 h). Gut passage time increased with decreasing food concentration (from 40 min at 9 µg pigm l–1 to 64 min at 0.9 µg pigm l–1). These results together with some data by other authors suggest that the gut fluorescence method can be used to estimate in situ grazing rate providing gut passage time is measured properly and there are no losses of faecal material. However, careful consideration should be given to the previous feeding history of copepods.  相似文献

The suitability of exotic carps namely Aristichthys nobilis (Bighead carp), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Silver carp), Ctenopharyngodon idellus (Grass carp), Cyprinus carpio (Common carp) and Labeo rohita (Rohu) in a sub-tropical lake was evaluated. The impact of their introduction on native fishes was also studied. After the introduction and cage culture of exotic carps the total harvest reached 92 kg·ha–1; an increase of 266% within eight years. The planktivorous bighead and silver carps were most successful. The harvest of the other three species was poor. Since the introduction of exotic carp the harvest of indigenous fishes declined by 42%. Considering the food habits of these fish, further stocking should be limited to bighead and silver carps to limit the adverse effects on the indigenous species.  相似文献

The suspension feeding of Bithynia tentaculata was tested in laboratory experiments. The animals were fed in 1-1 aerated glass beakers, and filtration rates were calculated from changes in cell concentrations during the 6-h experiment. Temperature influenced the filtering rate, with minimum values of 5ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 5° C and maxima of 17.2 ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 18° C. Three food species of different size, motility and cell surface characteristics (Chlamydomonas reinhardii, Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorogonium elongatum) did not affect filtration rates. Suspension feeding increased with increasing food concentrations up to 12 nl · ml–1, above which feeding rate was kept constant by lowering the filtering rates. Even the smallest animals tested (<4 mm body length) were found to be feeding on suspended food at a rate of 2.7 ml · ind–1 · h–1, and increasing rates up to 8.4 ml were found in the 6–7 mm size class. All size classes of Bithynia showed a circannual fluctuation of their filtration rates. The ecological consequences of Bithynia's ability to switch between two feeding modes, grazing and suspension feeding, are discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. In the laboratory, Asellus aquaticus devoured intact green leaves from growing shoots of the aquatic macrophyte Elodea canadensis. In four collections of A. aquaticus on Elodea in a lake (Windermere), c. 20% of the specimens contained in their guts fragments of green Elodea leaves; this material and pieces of oak (Quercus) were identified from characteristic leaf hairs. Some specimens had also eaten the filamentous alga Oedogonium. Fluorescence microscopy is a useful aid for screening invertebrates that may have eaten living plant tissues. Immature A. aquaticus, with an initial mean body length of c. 3 mm, wet weight c. 1 mg, were grown through sexual maturity over a 49-day period at 15°C in a series of twenty-two experiments (six to twelve isolated specimens in each experiment) comparing growth rates on different foods, including instances where no food was given. Animals were fed on a variety of items collected from the littoral of Windermere, plus some laboratory cultures of algae and bacteria. The highest mean specific growth rate (5.8% day?1) was obtained on young Elodea leaves mechanically shaken to remove epiphytes. Other diets yielding fast growth rates (3.7–5.3% day?1) were young growing leaves of Elodea with few epiphytes and older green and brown living leaves covered with a thick growth of epiphytic algae, epiphytic algae removed from Elodea, plastic imitation Elodea immersed in the lake until covered with attached algae, epilithic algae on stones, Oedogonium, and decaying oak leaves. Slower growth (1.3–2.2% day?1) and poorer survival was obtained on the following: a pure culture of the bacterium Sphaerotilus natans; cultured bacteria from lakewater; the filamentous algae Cladophora and Stigeoclonium both with and without epiphytes; faecal matter from Asellus; freshly killed Asellus; lake sediment. Some growth (mean = 0.7% day?1) and 50% survival for 21 days occurred in ‘starved’ animals kept in filtered, sterilized lakewater. Better survival and slightly faster growth (1.0–1.5% day?1) occurred in ‘starved’ animals kept in filtered and unfiltered lakewater. Growth of A. aquaticus was also experimentally determined from birth in animals fed on young green Elodea leaves and on decaying oak leaves. On both diets, growth was curvilinear and approximately exponential from birth to sexual maturity reached at c. 2mg wet weight in 46–60 days at 15°C. In older specimens the relative growth rate gradually fell over a period of 50 days, representing a more linear phase of growth during sexual maturity.  相似文献

We studied the life history variables and population growth characteristics of Brachionus variabilis, which was recorded for the first time from Mexico. The animals were fed Chlorella, using five concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 × 106 cells ml–1) at 25 °C. Food density was observed to have significant effect on life expectancy, average lifespan, gross reproductive rate, net reproductive rate, generation time and population growth rate. The average lifespan ranged from 3 to 6 days depending on the food density. The net reproductive rate ranged from 2 to 7 neonates female–1 d–1. The rate of population increase per day varied from 0.14 to 0.35. The highest net reproductive rate and average lifespan and life expectancy were recorded at Chlorella concentrations of 1 × 106 and 2 × 106 cells ml–1.  相似文献

In order to calibrate carrying capacity models, investigations were conducted into the effects of food concentration and food quality on the feeding rates of small (25–50 mm), medium (60–85 mm) and large (90–115 mm) Greenshell mussels (Perna canaliculus). Experimental diets varying from 3.3 to 6.0 μg l−1 chlorophyll a concentration and 12–25% organic content were fed to mussels housed in individual flow through chambers. Not surprisingly, this study found that the main factor affecting feeding rates is mussel size. Small mussels were observed to maintain a constant filtration rate of approximately 20 mg h−1 irrespective of food concentration or quality, whereas mussels of greater than 60 mm length had more variable filtration rates between 30 and 80 mg h−1. The filtration rates of these large mussels were also observed to increase positively with organic content, and showed no sign of levelling out, even at the highest organic content tested (25%). Highest rejection rates (50–70 mg h−1) were observed when the organic content of the available seston was low, suggesting that P. canaliculus are able to selectively reject organic material, thereby organically enriching their diet. It appears that the organic content of the seston is the primary determinant of the net efficiency with which food is selected from the available seston by the mussel. The present study shows that P. canaliculus of all sizes are capable of adapting their feeding behaviour to compensate for changes in the food supply, which may occur over relatively short time periods, in the culture environment.  相似文献

Summary The grass carp is one of the largest members of the family Cyprinidae. In their native habitat, grass carp typically reach weights of 30–36 kg, but fish have been reported up to 181 kg. Successful reproduction is a function of temperature, age/size, and water conditions. Fish reach maturity when about 4 years old (4–5 kg). Spawning occurs when water temperature rises above 20°C. Because grass carp eggs are semipelagic, current during spawning is required to keep eggs in suspension while they incubate. In general, successful spawning takes place under rising water conditions in very long rivers. Fecundity is very high in normal diploid individuals; females may produce over one million eggs in a season. In triploid fish, eggs and sperm are produced, but the incidence of viable offspring (even when mated with diploids) is very low.Grass carp fry begin feeding on microscopic animals and gradually switch to plant material as they grow. Adult diploids, triploids, and hybrids ( grass carp x bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Cyprinidae)) are all herbivorous. Feeding is strongly affected by temperature. Active feeding begins as temperatures rise above 7–8°C and consumption peaks at 20–26°C. Whereas triploids feed at nearly the same rate as diploids, hybrids feed at substantially lower rates. Therefore, vegetation control is most efficiently achieved with diploid or triploid fish. These fish may consume more than their own weight in plant material each day. However, feeding rate (and hence vegetation control) is affected by the forage that is available. Grass carp exhibit strong preferences for different macrophyte species depending on the aquatic system (i.e. the same plant species is not always the most preferred). Hydrilla verticillata and similar species are almost always among the most preferred species, and control or elimination is usually assured if adequate stocking densities are used. Vegetation control has been reported with stocking densities as low as six fish per vegetated ha.Grass carp currently appear to be the most effective biological control on aquatic vegetation. However, in order to avoid ecological disaster, care should be taken to limit their use to sterile forms and to prevent their invasion of ecologically sensitive areas, such as waterfowl staging areas and threatened or endangered species habitat.  相似文献

The herbivorous tortoise Xerobates agassizii contents with large fluctuations in the quality and abundance of desert pastures. Responses to grass (Schismus barbatus), herbage (Sphaeralcea ambigua) and pelleted diets were studied in captive animals. Digestive anatomy was investigated in wild tortoises. Cornified esophageal epithelia and numerous mucus glands along the digestive tract indicated a resistance to abrasive diets. Gastric contents were acidic whereas hindgut digesta were near neutral pH. The colon was the primary site of fermentation with short-chain fatty acids mainly comprised of acetate (69–84%), propionate (10–15%) and n-butyrate (1–12%). Fibre digestion was extensive and equivalent to 22–64% of digestible energy intakes. Large particles of grass (25 mm Crmordants) were excreted as a pulse but retained longer than either fluids (Co-EDTA) or fine particles (2 mm; Yb). Patterns of marker excretion suggested irregular mixing of only the fluid and fine particulate digesta in the stomach and the colon. Mean retention times of Crmordants were 14.2–14.8 days on the grass and highfibre pellets. Intakes of grass were low and accompanied by smaller estimates of digesta fill than for the high-fibre pellets. Digestive capacity was large and estimated at 11–21% of body mass on these diets. Ingestion and assimilation rates of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana Hauer, isolated from Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands) and cultured on lake water (seston < 33 µm), were measured in the laboratory using the 14C-tracer technique. The five taxa used as tracer foods, together with 6–7 mg C l–1 of lake seston in each case, included four species of filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria redekei, O. limnetica, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Anabaena PCC 7120) and a prochlorophyte (Prochlorothrix hollandica). Except Anabaena, they are all commonly encountered in eutrophic Loosdrecht lakes, including Lake Loosdrecht, and their dimensions ranged between 150 and 250 µm in length and 2 and 3.5 µm in width. The small and large Euchlanis used as experimental animals had mean lengths of 217–223 µm and 276–305 µm, respectively. Euchlanis fed on all the taxa offered as food. Clearance rates ranged from 51 to 99 µl ind–1 d–1 for the large animals and from 22 to 41 µl ind–1 d–1 for the small animals. The highest ingestion rate observed, 1.7 µg ind–1 d–1, was for the large animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The daily ration for both size classes far exceeded 100% of body weight, reaching up to 690% for the small animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The small animals generally appeared to assimilate the ingested food more efficiently (assimilation efficiencies: 37–100%) than the large animals (34–77%). Compared with an earlier study in which only lake seston (<33 µm) was used as food, the specific clearance rates of Euchlanis on the cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix were generally somewhat lower.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a diet analysis from the digestive tracts of 203 great cormorants shot at the Donji Miholjac fishponds in eastern Croatia, in the period 2000–2002. Eight fish species were determined. The dominant species was common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with a relative frequency of 73.4%, followed by grass carp (Ctenopharingodon idella) (11.6%), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) (7.2%), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) (2.0%), wels catfish (Silurus glanis) (1.7%), pike (Esox lucius) (1.5%), topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) (1.5%) and Prussian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) (1.1%). The diet spectrum of the great cormorants from the Donji Miholjac fishponds was in accordance with the structure of the fish population in the fishponds. The average stomach weight per bird was 244 g. When birds shot with an empty stomach were excluded, the average stomach weight increased to 286 g. The length of consumed fish ranged from 40–335 mm, with 47% of the fish belonging to the length category 100–149 mm. The study revealed no significant relationship between the weight of the consumed fish and the body weight of male and female cormorants.  相似文献

The population of the crayfish Astacus astacus was recorded in Lake Steinsfjorden (southeast Norway) over the period 1979–1996 by studies of total catch effort (baited traps) and catch per unit effort over the season. Over the years 1979–1987, total population of exploitable crayfish (>9.5 cm) was 194,000 (±62,000 SD), and the catches were evenly distributed over the shallow areas. After 1987 there was a sudden decrease in population size, reaching a level of 92,000 (±22,000 SD) for the 10 years that followed. From 1977 onwards the Canadian pondweed Elodea canadensis invaded the lake and established dense covers over large parts of the shallow areas. The crayfish were gradually excluded from areas covered by Elodea, while the yield from remaining areas remained relatively constant. Direct observation by test-fishing and diving confirmed the virtual absence of crayfish within the Elodea stands. Dense stands may directly interfere with movement of adult crayfish, and also strong fluctuations in O2 and pH were recorded within the stands, probably acting as a stress factor. Although anoxia was not observed in this survey, it may occur during years of massive dieback of Elodea. Thus, while crayfish are able to feed on Elodea, they are unable to control the rapid growth over large areas of this invader, and somewhat paradoxically the herbivore is spatially excluded by its potential resource.  相似文献

Experiment was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of varying water temperature and ration size on growth and body composition of fry of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Common carp fry with an initial body weight (BW) of 0.86 g were fed a diet (34.9% protein, 18.3 KJ/g diet) at four ration sizes 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% of their body weight per day and reared at two water temperatures 28 and 32 °C for 60 days. Fry fed with 6% ration showed the highest mean final body weight at 28 °C. Final body weight was significantly (P<0.05) affected by ration and temperature. Cyprinus carpio fry raised at 28 °C had higher feed efficiency (FE) (44.36%) than the fry reared at 32 °C (40.98%) with 4% ration. Further, feed efficiency decreased with increase in ration levels in both temperatures. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) was higher (1.26) at 28 °C than at 32 °C (1.17). At 6% ration, common carp fry showed highest specific growth rate (SGR) (3.82%/day) at 28 °C as compared with at 32 °C (3.57%/day). A linear increase in protein and lipid contents was evident with increasing ration levels up to 6% body weight at both temperatures 28 and 32 °C. Second-order polynomial regression analysis of weight gain and SGR indicated the breakpoints at ration level 6.04% and 6.08% body weight per day at 28 and 32 °C. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) not affected by temperature and ration size while, viscerosomatic index (VSI) influenced (P<0.05) by ration size and temperature. Based on the above results, it may be concluded that 6% BW/day ration is optimal for growth of Cyprinus carpio fry at both the temperatures 28 and 32 °C.  相似文献

Feeding of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a brachionid rotifer isolated from the Loosdrecht Lakes (The Netherlands), was examined in the laboratory using 14C-labelled food. The gut-filling time at a food concentration of 9.6 µg C ml–1 was about 15 minutes. Animals which were fed on 3 size fractions of the lake seston (< 7 µm, 7–15 µm, and 15–33 µm) showed a clear preference (Jacobs' selectivity index) for the largest size fraction. This fraction was composed predominantly of filamentous cyanobacteria. For animals weighing 0.37–0.49 µm C ind.–1 the daily ration (daily food consumption per unit body weight × 100) ranged from 50 to 100% at food levels of 2 mg C l–1 and below, but increased to 150–250% at food concentrations of 5 mg C l–1 and above. The assimilation efficiency was 100% up to 5 mg C l–1 of food, but decreased to about 80% at higher food levels.  相似文献

Data on phosphate excretion rates of zooplankton are based on measurements using the pelagic crustacean zooplankton of Lake Vechten and laboratory-cultured Daphnia galeata. In case of Daphnia sp we measured the effects of feeding on P-rich algae and P-poor algae (Scenedesmus) as food on the P-excretion rates at 20°C. The excretion rates of the natural zooplankton community, irrespective of the influence of the factors mentioned, varied by an order of magnitude: 0.025–0.275µg PO4-Pmg–1C in zooplankton (C zp ) h–1. The temperature accounted for about half the observed variation in excretion rates. The mean excretion rates in the lake, computed for 20°C, varied between 0.141 and 0.260 µg Pmg–1C zp h–1. Based on data of zooplankton biomass in the lake the P-regeneration rates by zooplankton covered between 22 and 239% of the P-demand of phytoplankton during the different months of the study period.In D. galeata, whereas the C/P ratios of the Scenedesmus used as food differed by a factor 5 in the experiments, the excretion rates differed by factor 3 only. Despite the higher P-excretion rates (0.258± 0.022 µg PO4-P mg–1 C h–1) of the daphnids fed with P-rich food than those fed with P-poor food (0.105 ± 0.047 µg PO4-P mg–1 C hp–1), both the categories of the animals were apparently conserving P. A survey of the literature on zooplankton excretion shows that in Daphnia the excretion rates vary by a factor 30, irrespective of the species and size of animals and method of estimation and temperature used.About two-thirds of this variation can be explained by size and temperature. A major problem of comparability of studies on P-regeneration by zooplankton relates to the existing techniques of P determination, which necessitates concentrating the animals several times above the in situ concentration (crowding) and prolonged experimental duration (starving), both of which manifest in marked changes that probably lead to underestimation of the real rates.  相似文献

This study evaluated the use of egg ratio (eggs rotifer–1) and swimming speed (mm min–1) as prediction criteria for production and culture quality in mass cultures of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Egg ratio was determined to be a suitable predictor of rotifer growth and production in the cultures. Low egg ratios (i.e., 0–0.17 eggs rotifer–1) indicate reduced rotifer population over time (i.e., negative net population growth rates). However, at this time egg ratio dynamics are not suitably understood to predict in advance a sudden population collapse.Swimming speed of reproductive, egg-carrying females in the exponential growth phase was 40–45 mm min–1. During exponential growth swimming speed was independent of the food used. Lower swimming speeds were obtained in late stationary phase (10–25 mm min–1) when yeast was used as a food source. Both environmental factors (e.g., accumulating metabolites) and changes in nutritional state of the rotifers may have affected the swimming speed, but environmental factors appear to be the most important. We believe that swimming speed has the potential of becoming an accurate predictor of culture quality in mass cultures of rotifers.  相似文献

The caddisfly Sericostoma vittatum Rambur (Trichoptera: Sericostomatidae) is an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula. Under laboratory conditions, larvae of S. vittatum had a higher activity and metabolism during the night. Besides consuming particulate allochthonous organic matter, young stages are also able to feed and grow on faecal pellets from adults. Daily growth rates varied from 0.02 mg (0.8–3.7 mg size class animals) to 0.31 mg dry mass (10.6–22.8 mg size class animals). Due to the high densities of this species (annual mean of 25 individuals m–2; maximum of 96 individuals m–2) and high consumption rates (0.47 mg leaf dry mass mg animal–1 d–1for small larvae), this species has a potential key role on the fragmentation of allochthonous organic matter of streams in central Portugal.  相似文献

Evidence for the influence of food type and heavy metals on shell growth and fertility is presented for a freshwater population of the snail P. jenkinsi. When fed an excess of lettuce or lamb heart (protein source), growth rates were higher for lettuce. Highest growth rates occurred at a diet of lettuce plus lamb heart. Fertility was favoured by a diet of lamb heart. When fed an excess of lettuce, the EC50 growth values were 16 µg Cd l–1, 13 µg Cu l–1, and 103 µg Zn l–1 in lake water; snail fertility was inhibited at 25 µg Cd l–1 and 30 µg Cu l–1. A diet of lake detritus spiked with Cd or Cu resulted in a decrease of approximately 50% in growth rates, when compared with growth on non-spiked detritus. Spiked detritus lost metals into lake water. Food type positively interacted with metal stress, both for growth rate and fertility. The assessment of inhibitory effects of detritus contaminated either in the field or, notably, by spiking, and serving as food source for deposit feeders is hampered by sampling problems in the field and by redistribution processes of pollutants between particles and water in laboratory-scale experiments.  相似文献

The rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus can utilize the cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae as either a sole or supplementary food source in laboratory culture. Positive population growth rates accompany food densities of 10 or 100 µg dry weight ml–1, but slightly negative rates are found at a lower density (1.0 µg ml–1). These results are consistent for rotifers feeding on two strains of A. flos-aquae, UTEX-1444 and NRC-44-1, with slightly enhanced survivorship and reproduction with the latter food. A 1:1 mixture (by dry weight) of Euglena gracilis and A. flos-aquae (NRC-44-1) produces survivorship comparable to that of control rotifer cohorts fed E. gracilis alone, but elicits significantly greater fecundity and population growth rates than found with the control food suspension at the same biomass density.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to follow the fate of the cyanobacterial toxin, nodularin, produced by Nodularia spumigena through ingestion by Mytilus edulis and re-ingestion of faecal material (coprophagy). Mussels were fed with cultures of N. spumigena, and the faeces that were produced were fed to other mussels not previously exposed to N. spumigena. Concentrations of nodularin were measured in the food (N. spumigena), the mussels and in the faeces in order to make a toxin budget. High concentrations of nodularin were found in the mussels and their faeces after 48 h incubation with N. spumigena. When the toxic faeces were fed to new mussels, the toxin content of faeces was reduced from 95 μg nod g−1 dry weight (DW) to 1 μg nod g−1 DW through the process of coprophagy. Hence, when toxic faeces were fed to mussels, the nodularin concentration of the resulting faecal material was reduced by 99%. Pseudofaeces were produced when the mussels were grazing on N. spumigena, but not when grazing on faeces. The pseudofaeces contained high concentrations of nodularin and apparently intact N. spumigena cells. However, these cells were growth-inhibited and their potential contribution to seeding a bloom is probably limited. Our data indicate that a large fraction of ingested nodularin in M. edulis is egested with the faeces, and that the concentration of nodularin in the faeces is reduced when faeces are re-ingested.  相似文献
