In this paper, new data on larval and postlarval stages after newly collected and museum-deposited material of six Ammothea species is provided and compared with previously known information. Different developmental stages attached to the ovigerous legs of adult males for each species were found: four stages [protonymphon (Ptn), postlarval instar 1 (PL-1), postlarval instar 2 (PL-2), and postlarval instar 3 (PL-3)] for A. carolinensis; just one (Ptn) for A. clausi and A. minor; three stages (Ptn, PL-1, PL-2) for A. bicorniculata and A. spinosa; and other three (Ptn, PL-2, PL-3) for A. longispina. In the present contribution, the external morphology of each larval and postlarval instar is described, illustrated, and discussed. The larval and postlarval development of Ammothea bicorniculata, A. carolinensis, A. longispina, and A. spinosa is characterized by (1) the eggs hatch as a protonymphon larva; (2) the larvae and subsequent postlarval stages have yolk reserves and a relatively large size (0.5–0.85 mm in length for the protonymphon); (3) the postlarvae remain on the ovigerous legs of males during several moults; (4) the spinning spine is absent; and (5) the development of walking legs is sequential. The protonymphon larva of A. clausi and A. minor is the only stage on the ovigerous legs of males, and this stage is characterized by: (1) there is no yolk reserve and it has a relatively small size (0.22–0.3 mm in length); (2) the spinning spine is present; and (3) all larval appendages have a relatively large size.  相似文献

Two new species of the genus Ammothea are described from Elephant Island and the South Shetlands Islands, Antarctica. The material was captured during the Polarstern cruise XXIII/8 to the Antarctic Peninsula area. The main features of Ammothea pseudospinosa n. sp. are a proboscis distinctly trilobulated distally with a constriction at 2/3 of its length and dimorphism between the propodi of the anterior (first and second) and posterior (third and fourth) legs, and a trunk: proboscis length ratio of about 1.5. The main features of Ammothea childi n. sp. are a cylindrical proboscis, longer than trunk length, and adults with functional chelifores. These species are compared with their closest congeners from the Southern Ocean: A. pseudospinosa n. sp. with Ammothea spinosa and Ammothea allopodes; A. childi n. sp. with Ammothea gigantea, Ammothea bicorniculata and Ammothea hesperidensis.  相似文献

The occurrence of members of the highly diverse Daphnia longispina complex in Southern and Central Asian high-mountain lakes has been recognized for more than a century. Until now, however, no molecular data have been available for these populations inhabiting the “Roof of the World.” Here, we present the first identification for D. gr. longispina from that region based on a molecular phylogeny. Our findings show that alpine lakes in the Pamir and Himalaya mountains host populations of widespread species of the complex, for which these are the highest known localities. A spineless morph from the Himalaya region, previously labeled as D. longispina var. aspina, was clustering tightly with D. dentifera, while a population from the Pamir mountain range was grouped with D. longispina. In addition, we analyzed ecological data available for lakes in the Khumbu region (Himalaya) to investigate ecological preferences of non-pigmented D. gr. longispina. The identified factors can at least partly be related to avoidance of high UV conditions by this species. We conclude that the widespread species D. dentifera and D. longispina also colonized the Asian high-mountain lakes, and identify the need for further research to trace the possible effect of rapid environmental changes in this region on the diversity and ecology of high-altitude Daphnia populations.  相似文献

Desiccation resistance was investigated experimentally in two species pairs of Collembola: Hypogastrura viatica and H. longispina, and Folsomia sexoculata and F. quadrioculata. A previous field study in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, showed clear habitat segregation between the species, related to two concomitant gradients of habitat cover and soil moisture. H. longispina and F. sexoculata inhabit areas with high habitat cover and soil moisture, whereas F. quadrioculata is mainly found in drier areas with high cover and H. viatica exploits the whole range of humidities/habitat cover. The desiccation experiments were aimed at testing if drought is likely to be a limiting factor for the distribution of H.?longispina and F. sexoculata. Drought was induced experimentally by testing different temperatures at a constant relative humidity. Temperature recordings from the field showed that temperatures within the range tested in the experiments occur naturally. H. longispina was highly drought sensitive compared to H. viatica, and desiccation stress probably acts as a limiting factor for its distribution in the area. F. sexoculata, was, however, much more resistant to desiccation than F. quadrioculata. For F. sexoculata, resistance to desiccation may show a trade-off in favour of tolerating a wider range of humidities, or be the result of a cuticular adaptation related to long dispersal distances and/or tolerance to submergence. For F. quadrioculata, desiccation may be an important mortality factor (but not limiting), contributing to high between-population variability in density and demography.  相似文献

This paper describes courtship behaviour, spermatophore morphology, and the female genitalia of the African whip spiders Charinus africanus Hansen, 1921 (Charinidae) and Damon tibialis (Simon, 1876) (Phrynichidae). In C. africanus, only the first part of courtship behaviour, up to spermatophore formation, could be observed; though different in detail, it is similar to that of many other species. The small spermatophore of C. africanus contains one large median sperm package. Charinus africanus is one of the Charinus species with thin finger-like gonopods and the first species with such gonopods of which the spermatophore is known. Spermatophores and female genitalia of D. tibialis are similar, though different in details, to those of Trichodamon and Musicodamon. They thus suggest that these two genera are correctly included in the Damoninae.  相似文献

We describe here a rare case of traumatic myiasis occurred in August 2014, caused by an association of 2 Diptera species, Sarcophaga tibialis Macquart (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) and Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), in a domestic cat in northern Italy. Species identification was based on adult male morphology. The present case is the first report of S. tibialis as an agent of myiasis in Italy, and also the first ever report of myiasis caused by an association of S. tibialis and L. sericata. The cat developed an extensive traumatic myiasis in a large wound on the rump, which was treated pharmacologically and surgically. The biology, ecology, and distribution of S. tibialis and L. sericata are also discussed. A literature review is provided on cases of myiasis caused by S. tibialis, and cases of myiasis by L. sericata involving cats worldwide and humans and animals in Italy.  相似文献

Worldwide most pollinators, e.g. bumblebees, are undergoing global declines. Loss of genetic diversity can play an essential role in these observed declines. In this paper, we investigated the level of genetic diversity of seven declining Bombus species and four more stable species with the use of microsatellite loci. Hereto we genotyped a unique collection of museum specimens. Specimens were collected between 1918 and 1926, in 6 provinces of the Netherlands which allowed us to make interspecific comparisons of genetic diversity. For the stable species B. pascuorum, we also selected populations from two additional time periods: 1949–1955 and 1975–1990. The genetic diversity and population structure in B. pascuorum remained constant over the three time periods. However, populations of declining bumblebee species showed a significantly lower genetic diversity than co-occurring stable species before their major declines. This historical difference indicates that the repeatedly observed reduced genetic diversity in recent populations of declining bumblebee species is not caused solely by the decline itself. The historically low genetic diversity in the declined species may be due to the fact that these species were already rare, making them more vulnerable to the major drivers of bumblebee decline.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study long-term changes in the zooplankton of a subalpine locality unaffected by direct anthropogenic disturbances. The material has been collected during the period 1985–1997; since 1988 a standardised sampling program has been followed, with five sampling dates during the ice free period (June–October) at three fixed stations. Altogether 17 species of Rotatoria, 9 species of Copepoda and 11 species of Cladocera were recorded. Of these 10 species of Rotatoria, two species of Copepoda and five species of Cladocera occur regularly in the plankton. Polyarthra vulgaris dominate among the rotifers together with Kellicottia longispina and Conochilus unicornis. The crustacean community is dominated by the copepod Cyclops scutifer, and the cladocerans Bosmina longispina, Holopedium gibberum and Daphnia longispina. The cladocerans Bythotrephes longimanus, Polyphemus pediculus, and the copepodsArctodiaptomus laticeps and Heterocope saliens all occur regularly, but at low densities. The zooplankton density is low in May/June and peaks in August and September, but the timing of maximum densities varies from year to year. By numbers, the rotifers strongly dominate with densities 10–15 times higher than the crustaceans. The annual maximum density (rotifers plus crustaceans) ranged from 50 ind. l?1 (1985, 1988) to 450 ind. l?1 (1995). Mean density is about 140–150 ind. l?1. By biomass (dry weight), the cladocerans constitute 60%, while the copepods and rotifers constitute 30% and 10% of the zooplankton, respectively. The annual maximum has varied between 70 and 260 μg dw l?1, with 170 μg dw l?1 as the mean level. C. scutifer usually has a one-year lifecycle without diapause, but a small fraction of the population has a two-year lifecycle. The life cycle in 1989 and 1990 differed strongly from the other years. The life cycles of B. longispina, D. longispina and possibly also H. gibberum and A. laticeps, indicate two generations during the summer. H. gibberumandH. saliens pass the winter as resting eggs. The other crustacean species, except C. scutifer, pass the winter mainly as resting eggs, but all have a small winter population in the water mass. C. scutifer is the only species without resting eggs. The vertical distribution normally shows highest density between 5 and 10 m depth. However, during some periods maximum density is observed close to the surface, while at other times it is seen deep in the hypolimnion. The vertical distribution is most pronounced when the thermocline is sharp, and less pronounced during the full circulation in autumn. The vertical migration may also be pronounced, especially in B. longispina, with high density near the surface during the night. The vertical migration is less pronounced among the rotifers and copepods. The degree of vertical migration varies with temperature and food conditions. There is little variation from year to year in species composition, but large variation in species dominance, seasonal development, population density, and vertical and horizontal distribution during the sampling period. Variations in temperature, food condition, predation, and water through-flow are possible causes for the observed differences between the years. Input of allochthonous material is especially important. However, no clear correlation have been found between the development of the plankton community and these environmental factors. Hence, these interactions are complex and multifactorial.  相似文献

Available type material of Prionospio heterobranchia Moore, 1907, P. (Prionospio) texana Hartman, 1951, P. spongicola Wesenberg-Lund, 1958 and P. (P.) newportensis Reish, 1959, as well as newly collected material from the Southern Gulf of Mexico and Chetumal Bay in the Caribbean Sea, was examined. Several important differences were found between P. heterobranchia, P. (Prionospio) texana, P. spongicola and P. (P.) newportensis, and as a result, these three species are removed from synonymy with P. heterobranchia Moore, 1907, and redescribed and reinstated as valid species. In addition, three new species were identified and described: P. caribensis sp. nov., P. rosariae sp. nov. and P. jamaicensis sp. nov. A key to all species of Prionospio with five pairs of branchiae is provided.  相似文献

We describe two new species of deer truffle, Elaphomyces marmoratus and E. fuscus spp. nov., collected from a secondary forest dominated by Quercus serrata, in Tokyo, Japan. Both species have morphological similarities to E. muricatus and E. granulatus; however, the former has a gleba without a purplish color and the latter has reticulated ascospores more closely resembling E. asperulus. Molecular phylogenetic analyses also support the assignment of these specimens as new species. ITS rDNA homologies with known species were low (<91% and <97%). In addition, phylogenetic trees using neighbor-joining and maximum likelihood methods showed that the sequences of the two new species each formed a monophyletic group within section Elaphomyces with bootstrap support of 99%. Analyses of ectomycorrhizal roots collected concurrently with the ascomata revealed that E. marmoratus is associated with at least Pinus densiflora, while E. fuscus is associated with at least Q. serrata.  相似文献

Megachile Latreille is a conspicuous genus of solitary bees distributed worldwide. However, the biology of tropical species is still little known. We present data on biology of Megachile brasiliensis Data Torre, Megachile sejuncta Cockerell and Megachile stilbonotaspis Moure found in two remnants of eastern Amazonian forest in northeastern Brazil. The study was conducted using the trap-nest methodology in two different areas during four periods. We collected a total of 24 nests of M. brasiliensis, 26 of M. sejuncta and 28 of M. stilbonotaspis. The differential abundance of collected nests may reflect the population size in each sampled place. The nesting activity was concentrated mainly between July and January and species presented a multivoltine pattern, except for M. sejuncta, which was partly univoltine. Assessed pollen use showed a predominant use of Attalea sp. (Arecaceae) and, for M. stilbonotaspis, Tylesia sp. and Lepidaploa sp. (Asteraceae). Babassu is a very common palm in the studied areas and the studied species seem to have a strong link with it. We also reported change of pollen use by M. sejuncta, probably due to competition with M. brasiliensis, which may have influenced the biased sex ratio observed in M. sejuncta toward males. Parasites reported here were also recorded for other Megachile species, such as Coelioxys, Brachymeria, Meloidae and Pyralidae species. Mites were observed in association with M. stilbonotaspis. The data presented here set up a background that encourages new studies on the ecology of these three Amazonian species, providing tools for proper biodiversity management and conservation.  相似文献

Although goats are common domestic browsers in African savannas, factors that affect their diet selection and food intake rate are poorly understood. This study used a cafeteria-style experimental procedure to investigate the effects of season and breed on browse species intake rates and browse species preference by Boer and Nguni goats in the False Thornveld of the Eastern Cape. Six browse species that commonly occur in the study area were used: Grewia occidentalis L. (Tiliaceae), Scutia myrtina (Burm. f.) Kurz (Rhamnaceae), Diospyros lycioides Desf. subsp. lycioides (Ebenaceae), Rhus longispina Eckl. and Zeyh. (Anacardiaceae), Ehretia rigida (Thunb.) Druce (Boraginaceae) and Acacia karroo Hayne (Fabaceae=Leguminosae). Cut branches were offered to goats during winter and summer and instantaneous intake rates and preferences were measured. There were no significant differences between Boer goats and Nguni goats in dry matter intake rates per unit metabolic body weight and in preferences of the six browse species, suggesting a potential for competition should the resources become limiting. However, the intake rates of Nguni goats increased by 50% from winter to summer, while intake rates of Boer goats increased by 87%. The mean intake rate was 69% higher in summer than in winter. Intake rates varied among all browse species, except A. karroo and R. longispina. Intake rates of D. lycioides, G. occidentalis and S. myrtina were higher than those of the other three species. Intake rates tended to increase more among deciduous species than evergreen species in summer, but the effect was not consistent. Likewise, intake rate within seasons was not consistently related to leaf phenology; intake rate of deciduous species was neither lower nor higher than that of evergreen species at any time. However, the increased intake rate in summer was consistent among those deciduous and evergreen species that produce all their new leaves on new long shoots, as opposed to species that produce their new leaves on old short shoots. The consequence of the two shoot morphologies for the browsing animal is that browseable material in the former group consists of shoots and leaves, but in the latter group consists mostly of leaves only. G. occidentalis and S. myrtina were the two most preferred species. Deciduous species were not consistently more preferred than evergreen. In accordance with optimal foraging theory, nutrient intake rates consistently explained preference in winter and summer. Species that offered the highest rates of nutrient intake were most preferred.  相似文献

Agrobacteria are common soil bacteria that interact with plants as commensals, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria or alternatively as pathogens. Indigenous agrobacterial populations are composites, generally with several species and/or genomic species and several strains per species. We thus developed a recA-based PCR approach to accurately identify and specifically detect agrobacteria at various taxonomic levels. Specific primers were designed for all species and/or genomic species of Agrobacterium presently known, including 11 genomic species of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens complex (G1-G9, G13 and G14, among which only G2, G4, G8 and G14 still received a Latin epithet: pusense, radiobacter, fabrum and nepotum, respectively), A. larrymoorei, A. rubi, R. skierniewicense, A. sp. 1650, and A. vitis, and for the close relative Allorhizobium undicola. Specific primers were also designed for superior taxa, Agrobacterium spp. and Rhizobiaceace. Primer specificities were assessed with target and non-target pure culture DNAs as well as with DNAs extracted from composite agrobacterial communities. In addition, we showed that the amplicon cloning-sequencing approach used with Agrobacterium-specific or Rhizobiaceae-specific primers is a way to assess the agrobacterial diversity of an indigenous agrobacterial population. Hence, the agrobacterium-specific primers designed in the present study enabled the first accurate and rapid identification of all species and/or genomic species of Agrobacterium, as well as their direct detection in environmental samples.  相似文献

We review the New Caledonian representatives of the Australasian endemic hydroptiline genus Acritoptila, based on examination of a considerable collection of material in the Swedish Museum of Natural History and of types of previously established species. A key for identification of males is given and includes 3 species newly described here: A. parallela sp. n., A. forficata sp. n. and A. macrospina sp. n. For all New Caledonian species, male genitalia are illustrated, and for 5 associated females, distinctive features are illustrated and described.  相似文献
