Linking herbivore-induced defences to population dynamics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1. Theoretical studies have shown that inducible defences have the potential to affect population stability and persistence in bi‐ and tritrophic food chains. Experimental studies on such effects of prey defence strategies on the dynamics of predator–prey systems are still rare. We performed replicated population dynamics experiments using the herbivorous rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and four strains of closely related algae that show different defence responses to this herbivore. 2. We observed herbivore populations to fluctuate at a higher frequency when feeding on small undefended algae. During these fluctuations minimum rotifer densities remained sufficiently high to ensure population persistence in all the replicates. The initial growth of rotifer populations in this treatment coincided with a sharp drop in algal density. Such a suppression of algae by herbivores was not observed in the other treatments, where algae were larger due to induced or permanent defences. In these treatments we observed rotifer population densities to first rise and then decline. The herbivore went extinct in all replicates with large permanently defended algae. The frequency of herbivore extinctions was intermediate when algae had inducible defences. 3. A variety of alternative mechanisms could explain differential herbivore persistence in the different defence treatments. Our analysis showed the density and fraction of highly edible algal particles to better explain herbivore persistence and extinctions than total algal density, the fraction of highly inedible food particles or the accumulation of herbivore waste products or autotoxins. 4. We argue that the rotifers require a minimum fraction and density of edible food particles for maintenance and reproduction. We conjecture that induced defences in algae may thus favour larger zooplankton species such as Daphnia spp. that are less sensitive to shifts in their food size spectrum, relative to smaller zooplankton species, such as rotifers and in this way contributes to the structuring of planktonic communities.  相似文献

Seasonal and vertical distribution, migratory patterns and reproductive effort in coexisting cladocerans were investigated in three humic lakes with different, but low phytoplankton abundances and varying fish predation pressure. Seasonal and vertical habitat or niche overlap varied, but were high within most pairs of species in all localities. Migration was conspicuous in presence of planktivorous fish, less so in the fish free lake. Despite algal densities below incipient limiting level (30–200 μg C I−1) and a low ratio (3–10) of algal to cladoceran biomass, zooplankton distribution and reproductive parameters were not clearly related to algal biomass. Bacterial biomass equalled 10–50% of phytoplankton biomass, while detritus by far was the largest of the particulate compartements. It was concluded that with a possible exception of the early summer algal bloom, additional carbon sources (bacteria, detritus) are important to cladoceran nutrition in these humic lakes. A large share of N- and P-poor detritus in the diet would give zooplankton productivity limitation by food quality in terms of elemental composition rather than food quantity. This would permit coexistence even of species with rather high food overlap, but give low production rates for all species in agreement with the observations.  相似文献

We developed a mechanistic model of nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish interactions to test the effects of phytoplankton food quality for herbivorous zooplankton on planktonic food web processes. When phytoplankton food quality is high strong trophic cascades suppress phytoplankton biomass, the zooplankton can withstand intense zooplanktivory, and energy is efficiently transferred through the food web sustaining higher trophic level production. Low food quality results in trophic decoupling at the plant-animal interface, with phytoplankton biomass determined primarily by nutrient availability, zooplankton easily eliminated by fish predation, and poor energy transfer through the food web. At a given nutrient availability, food quality and zooplanktivory interact to determine zooplankton biomass which in turn determines algal biomass. High food quality resulted in intense zooplankton grazing which favored fast-growing phytoplankton taxa, whereas fish predation favored slow-growing phytoplankton. These results suggest algal food quality for herbivorous zooplankton can strongly influence the nature of aquatic food web dynamics, and can have profound effects on water quality and fisheries production. Nutrient stoichiometric ratios are primary driving factors of planktonic food web dynamics. Ecological stoichiometry theory postulates the elemental ratios of consumer species to be homeostatic, while primary-producer stoichiometry may vary with ambient nutrient availability. The notion of phytoplankton intracellular storage is far from novel, but remains largely unexplored in modeling studies of population dynamics. We constructed a seasonally-unforced, zero-dimensional, nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton–detritus (NPZD) model that considers dynamic phytoplankton phosphorus reserves and quasi-dynamic zooplankton stoichiometry. A generic food quality term is used to express seston biochemical composition, ingestibility, and digestibility. We examined the sensitivity of the planktonic food web patterns to light and nutrient availability, zooplankton mortality, and detritus food quality as well as to phytoplankton intracellular storage and zooplankton stoichiometry. Our results reinforce earlier findings that high quality seston exerts a stabilizing effect on food web dynamics. However, we also found that the combination of low algal and high detritus food quality with high zooplankton mortality yielded limit cycles and multiple steady states, suggesting that the heterogeneity characterizing seston nutritional quality may have more complicated ecological ramifications. Our numerical experiments identify resource competition strategies related to nutrient transport rates and internal nutrient quotas that may be beneficial for phytoplankton to persevere in resource-limiting habitats. We also highlight the importance of the interplay between optimal stoichiometry and the factors controlling homeostatic rigidity in zooplankton. In particular, our predictions show that the predominance of phosphorus-rich and tightly-homeostatic herbivores in nutrient-enriched environments with low seston food quality can potentially result in high phytoplankton abundance, high phytoplankton-to-zooplankton ratios, and acceleration of oscillatory dynamics. Generally, our modeling study emphasizes the impact of both intracellular/somatic storage and food quality on prey–predator interactions, pinpointing an important aspect of food web dynamics usually neglected by the contemporary modeling studies.  相似文献

Few studies have examined how foraging niche shift of a predator over time cascade down to local prey communities. Here we examine patterns of temporal foraging niche shifts of a generalist predator (yellow catfish, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) and the abundance of prey communities in a subtropical lake. We predicted that the nature of these interactions would have implications for patterns in diet shifts and growth of the predator. Our results show significant decreases in planktivory and benthivory from late spring to summer and autumn, whereas piscivory increased significantly from mid-summer until late autumn and also increased steadily with predator body length. The temporal dynamics in predator/prey ratios indicate that the predation pressure on zooplankton and zoobenthos decreased when the predation pressure on the prey fish and shrimps was high. Yellow catfish adjusted their foraging strategies to temporal changes in food availability, which is in agreement with optimal foraging theory. Meanwhile the decrease in planktivory and benthivory of yellow catfish enabled primary consumers, such as zooplankton and benthic invertebrates, to develop under low grazing pressure via trophic cascading effects in the local food web. Thus, yellow catfish shifts its foraging niche to intermediate consumers in the food web to benefit the energetic demand on growth and reproduction during summer, which in turn indirectly facilitate the primary consumers. In complex food webs, trophic interactions are usually expected to reduce the strength and penetrance of trophic cascades. However, our study demonstrates strong associations between foraging niche of piscivorous fish and abundance of prey. This relationship appeared to be an important factor in producing top-down effects on both benthic and planktonic food webs.  相似文献

Variation in the strengths of predator effects, although commonly observed in natural communities, and predicted from theoretical models, remains poorly understood in the study of food web interactions and community structure. In this study, I first showed that prey species in benthic pond food webs were highly variable in their susceptibility to predators. Some were vulnerable throughout their lives, whereas others were vulnerable as juveniles, but able to grow to a size-refuge. Next, I showed that herbivore and predator abundance increased along a natural productivity gradient among 29 ponds, and herbivore species composition shifted from dominance by vulnerable to dominance by invulnerable herbivore species along this gradient. However, there was a considerable amount of variation both in herbivore biomass and composition at intermediate productivity; some were dominated by small species and others by larger species. Finally, in in situ exclosure experiments, I found that predator effects were strong and cascaded to plants in a low productivity pond and in an intermediate productivity pond dominated by small herbivore species. Alternatively, in a high productivity pond and in an intermediate productivity pond dominated by larger herbivores, I found that predator effects on prey biomass were weak, and did not cascade to plants.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are considered to be essential nutrients that control secondary production in various ecosystems; insufficient availability of N and P can limit herbivore growth. Here, data are presented from field samplings and from a laboratory experiment on the potential of primary producers low in P, N, or P and N to constrain growth of the freshwater gastropod Radix ovata . The filamentous green alga Ulothrix fimbriata was cultured under different nutrient regimes, resulting in algae with different C:N:P ratios. The pure algae were fed in high and low quantities to juvenile R. ovata . Low availability of N and especially P in the algae strongly constrained the biomass accrual of the herbivore. In accordance with theoretical predictions, these food quality differences were highly dependent on the food quantity. The snails' growth rate was significantly related to their body C:P ratio, thereby supporting the growth rate hypothesis. R. ovata displayed a pronounced compensatory feeding response to low-nutrient food that could partly dampen but not fully compensate the food quality effects on snail growth. Increased feeding of gastropods at low P and/or N availability leads to depletion of periphyton biomass; hence compensatory feeding would shift the benthic herbivore community from a P or N limitation to a C limitation and thus have whole-ecosystem effects.  相似文献

Ecological and evolutionary mechanisms are increasingly thought to shape local community dynamics. Here, I evaluate if the local adaptation of a meso-predator to an apex predator alters local food webs. The marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum) is an apex predator that consumes both the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) and shared zooplankton prey. Common garden experiments reveal that spotted salamander populations which co-occur with marbled salamanders forage more intensely than those that face other predator species. These foraging differences, in turn, alter the diversity, abundance and composition of zooplankton communities in common garden experiments and natural ponds. Locally adapted spotted salamanders exacerbate prey biomass declines associated with apex predation, but dampen the top-down effects of apex predation on prey diversity. Countergradient selection on foraging explains why locally adapted spotted salamanders exacerbate prey biomass declines. The two salamander species prefer different prey species, which explains why adapted spotted salamanders buffer changes in prey composition owing to apex predation. Results suggest that local adaptation can strongly mediate effects from apex predation on local food webs. Community ecologists might often need to consider the evolutionary history of populations to understand local diversity patterns, food web dynamics, resource gradients and their responses to disturbance.  相似文献

Synopsis In this study we investigate the effect of food availability (zooplankton biomass) on the growth of Odontesthes bonariensis (Atherinidae) larvae. The larvae were stocked in four 45 m2 outdoor tanks at relatively high densities (100 and 200 larvae m–2). Because of the high stocking densities, the zooplankton biomass was depleted in all tanks. However, the patterns of food limitation, and particularly periods of severe food shortage, differed in tanks stocked at different densities. We could therefore, observe the effect of food limitation in larvae that differed in weight and age. The effects of variables suspected to influence O. bonariensis growth rates (age and weight of larvae, available zooplankton biomass, mean individual weight of available preys, total ingested prey weight, and mean weight of ingested preys) were investigated using standard multiple regression methods, and a model assuming: (1) an allometric relationship between maximum growth rates and weight of larvae, and (2) an inverse relationship between growth depression and the available zooplankton biomass. Both methods were consistent in showing that only the weight of larvae, and the availability of zooplankton prey had significant effects on the growth of O. bonariensis. The model's results additionally suggest that, if the observed growth rates are scaled by the maximum growth rate corresponding to the larva weight, the effect of zooplankton biomass is largely independent of age and weight of larvae.  相似文献

Population fluctuations can be affected by both extrinsic (e.g. weather patterns, food availability) and intrinsic (e.g. life‐history) factors. A key life‐history tradeoff is the production of offspring size versus number, ranging from many small offspring to few large offspring. Models show that this life‐history tradeoff in offspring size and number, through maturation time, can have significant impacts on population dynamics. However, few manipulative experiments have been conducted that can isolate life‐history effects from impacts of extrinsic factors in consumer–resource systems. We experimentally tested the effect of an offspring size–number tradeoff on population stability and food availability in a consumer–resource system. Using Daphnia pulex, we created a shift from many, small offspring being produced to fewer, larger offspring. Two sets of experiments were performed to examine the interaction of an extrinsic factor (light levels) and intrinsic population structure on dynamics, and we controlled for the ingestion pressure on algal prey at the time of the manipulation. We predicted that the tradeoff would impact internal consumer population characteristics, including biasing the stage structure towards adults, increasing adult size, and increasing average population‐level reproduction. This adult‐dominated stage structure was predicted to then lead to instability and a low quantity–high quality food state. Under all light levels, the manipulated populations became dominated by large adults. Contrary to predictions, the amplitudes of fluctuations in Daphnia biomass were lower in populations shifted to few–large offspring, representing higher stability in these populations. Furthermore, in high light conditions, a stable low Daphnia – high algae biomass (low food quality) state was observed in few–large offspring treatments but not in control (many–small offspring) treatments. Our results show a strong link between light levels as an extrinsic factor and the life‐history tradeoff of consumer offspring size versus number that impacts consumer–resource population dynamics through feedbacks with resource quality.  相似文献

The amount of energy flowing to top trophic levels depends on primary production and the efficiency at which it is converted to production at each trophic level. In aquatic systems, algal production is often limited by light and nutrients, and the nutritional quality of algae depends on the relative balance of these two resources. In this study, we used a mesocosm experiment to examine how light and nutrient variation affected food chain efficiency (FCE, defined as the proportion of primary production converted to top trophic level production), using a food web with benthic and pelagic food chains. We also related variation in benthic and pelagic efficiencies to the nutritional quality of primary producers, i.e. carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus stoichiometry. As predicted, pelagic and benthic FCEs were highest under low light/high nutrient conditions, the treatment with the best algal food quality, i.e. the lowest C:nutrient ratios. Pelagic FCE and pelagic herbivore efficiency (HEP) were more responsive than benthic FCE to variation in light and nutrients. Furthermore, pelagic FCE and HEP were highly correlated with algal C:P, suggesting ‘carryover effects’ of algal food quality on carnivores (larval fish) via effects on herbivore (zooplankton) quality. Benthic (tadpole) production was primarily explained by primary production rate, suggesting food quantity rather than quality drives their production. However, benthic FCE was also highest at low light/high nutrients and was significantly correlated with food quality. The stronger effect of food quality in mediating pelagic compared to benthic efficiencies, is consistent with differences in the stoichiometric mismatches between algae and consumers. Pelagic FCE and HEP were more likely to be P‐limited, whereas benthic FCE was more likely N‐limited. This study is the first to examine both pelagic and benthic FCE within the same system, and highlights the importance of differential consumer needs in determining how food quality affects energy transfer efficiency.  相似文献

Ecologists have long debated the role of predation in mediating the coexistence of prey species. Theory has mainly taken a bitrophic perspective that excludes the effects of inducible defenses at different trophic levels. However, inducible defenses could either limit or enhance the effects of predation on coexistence, by means of effects on bottom-up control and population stability. Our aim was to investigate how inducible defenses at different trophic levels affect the possibilities for predator-mediated coexistence, as opposed to competitive exclusion, in replicated experimental plankton communities. In particular, we analyzed how the presence or absence of inducible defenses in algal basal prey affected the outcome of competition between an inducible defended and an undefended herbivore, in the presence or absence of a carnivore. We found the undefended herbivore to be a superior competitor in the absence of predation. This outcome was reversed in the presence of a shared carnivore: populations of the undefended herbivore then strongly declined. The extent of this population decline differed between food webs based on undefended as opposed to inducible defended algal prey. In the former the undefended herbivore became undetectable for most of the duration of the experiment. In the latter the undefended herbivore also crashed to low densities, but it could still be detected during most of the experiment. In food webs based on inducible defended algae, the carnivore failed to reach high densities and exerted weaker top-down control on the two competing herbivores. We conclude that the inducible defense in one of our two competing herbivores allowed the outcome of competition to be reversed when a shared carnivore was added. Inducible defenses in algae did not change this outcome, but they significantly delayed extinction of the undefended herbivore. Predation itself did not promote coexistence in these experimental plankton communities.  相似文献

If prey species exhibit trade-offs in their ability to utilize resources versus their ability to avoid predation, predators can facilitate prey turnover along gradients of productivity, shifting dominance from edible to inedible prey (the keystone predator effect). I tested this model under controlled, laboratory conditions, using a model aquatic system composed of zooplankton as the top consumer, a diverse community of algae as prey, and nutrients as basal resources. Nutrient manipulations (low and high) were crossed with presence–absence of zooplankton. Results supported theoretical predictions. Algal biomass increased in response to enrichment regardless of predator presence/absence. However, predators and nutrients had an interactive effect on algal biomass and size structure. At the low nutrient level, algal-prey were dominated by edible forms and attained similar biomass regardless of zooplankton presence/absence. At the high level of enrichment, presence of zooplankton favored higher levels of algal biomass and shifted dominance to large, inedible taxa. At the termination of the experiment, I performed a series of lab-based assays on the resultant algal community in order to quantify trade-offs among algal size classes in maximal population growth rates (as a measure of competitive ability for nutrients) and susceptibility to zooplankton grazing. Assays provided support for a size-based keystone trade-off. Small size classes of algae displayed higher maximal growth rates but were more susceptible to grazing effects. Large size classes were protected from grazing but showed low rates of population growth in response to enrichment.  相似文献

Identifying the relative importance of predation and resources in population dynamics has a long tradition in ecology, while interactions between them have been studied less intensively. In order to disentangle the effects of predation by juvenile fish, algal resource availability and their interactive effects on zooplankton population dynamics, we conducted an enclosure experiment where zooplankton were exposed to a gradient of predation of roach (Rutilus rutilus) at different algal concentrations. We show that zooplankton populations collapse under high predation pressure irrespective of resource availability, confirming that juvenile fish are able to severely reduce zooplankton prey when occurring in high densities. At lower predation pressure, however, the effect of predation depended on algal resource availability since high algal resource supply buffered against predation. Hence, we suggest that interactions between mass-hatching of fish, and the strong fluctuations in algal resources in spring have the potential to regulate zooplankton population dynamics. In a broader perspective, increasing spring temperatures due to global warming will most likely affect the timing of these processes and have consequences for the spring and summer zooplankton dynamics.  相似文献

Mismatches in the elemental composition of herbivores and their resources can impact herbivore growth and reproduction. In aquatic systems, the ratio of elements, such as C, P, and N, is used to characterize the food quality of algal prey. For example, large increases in the C:P ratio of edible algae can decrease rates of growth and reproduction in Daphnia. Current theory emphasizes that Daphnia utilize only assimilation and respiration processes to maintain an optimal elemental composition, yet studies of terrestrial herbivores implicate behavioral processes in coping with local variation in food quality. We tested the ability of juvenile and adult Daphnia to locate regions of high-quality food within a spatial gradient of algal prey differing in C:P ratio, while holding food density constant over space. Both juveniles and adults demonstrated similar behavior by quickly locating (i.e., <10 min) the region of high food quality. Foraging paths were centred on regions of high food quality and these differed significantly from paths of individuals exposed to a homogeneous environment of both food density and food quality. Ingestion rate experiments on algal prey of differing stoichiometric ratio show that individuals can adjust their intake rate over fast behavioral time-scales, and we use these data to examine how individuals choose foraging locations when presented with a spatial gradient that trades off food quality and food quantity. Daphnia reared under low food quality conditions chose to forage in regions of high food quality even though they could attain the same C ingestion rate elsewhere along a spatial gradient. We argue that these aspects of foraging behavior by Daphnia have important implications for how these herbivores manage their elemental composition and our understanding of the dynamics of these herbivore–plant systems in lakes and ponds where spatial variation in food quality is present. Recent evidence shows that high supply ratios of light and nutrients limit planktonic herbivore growth by lowering the nutritional quality of algae. Over longer time scales, however, grazers may ameliorate this effect by their impact on nutrient cycling. We examine this possibility using two species of the herbivorous zooplankter Daphnia and its algal prey under different light intensities and low phosphorus supply in laboratory microcosms. At high light, Daphnia biomass was limited for a substantial period because of low P content of algal cells. However, a gradual increase in Daphnia density eventually improved food quality through grazing and nutrient cycling and via a novel process involving positive density dependence. Competitive exclusion of one of the two Daphnia species occurred under low light but not under high light when algae were nutritionally unsuitable. Such stoichiometrically mediated interactions among herbivorous animals may represent important mechanisms that affect community structure and material flows in ecosystems.  相似文献

Nutrient limitation determines the primary production and species composition of many ecosystems. Here we apply an adaptive dynamics approach to investigate evolution of the ecological stoichiometry of primary producers and its implications for plant-herbivore interactions. The model predicts a trade-off between the competitive ability and grazing susceptibility of primary producers, driven by changes in their nutrient uptake rates. High nutrient uptake rates enhance the competitiveness of primary producers but also increase their nutritional quality for herbivores. This trade-off enables coexistence of nutrient exploiters and grazing avoiders. If herbivores are not selective, evolution favors runaway selection toward high nutrient uptake rates of the primary producers. However, if herbivores select nutritious food, the model predicts an evolutionarily stable strategy with lower nutrient uptake rates. When the model is parameterized for phytoplankton and zooplankton, the evolutionary dynamics result in plant-herbivore oscillations at ecological timescales, especially in environments with high nutrient availability and low selectivity of the herbivores. High herbivore selectivity stabilizes the community dynamics. These model predictions show that evolution permits nonequilibrium dynamics in plant-herbivore communities and shed new light on the evolutionary forces that shape the ecological stoichiometry of primary producers.  相似文献

1. To improve mechanistic understanding of plankton responses to eutrophication, a mesocosm experiment was performed in the shallow littoral zone of a south Swedish lake, in which nutrient and fish gradients were crossed in a fully factorial design. 2. Food chain theory accurately predicted total biomass development of both phyto‐ and zooplankton. However, separating zooplankton and algae into finer taxonomic groups revealed a variety of responses to both nutrient and fish gradients. 3. That both nutrients and fish are important for phytoplankton dynamics was seen more clearly when viewing each algal group separately, than drawing conclusions only from broad system variables such as chlorophyll a concentration or total phytoplankton biovolume. 4. In some taxa, physiological constraints (e.g. sensitivity to high pH and low concentrations of free CO2) and differences in competitive ability may be more important for the biomass development than fish predation, grazing by herbivorous zooplankton, and nutrient availability. 5. We conclude that food chain theory accurately predicted responses in system variables, such as total zooplankton or algal biomass, which are shaped by the dynamics of certain strong interactors (‘keystone species’), such as large cladocerans, cyanobacteria and edible algae (<50 μm), whereas responses at finer taxonomic levels cannot be predicted from current theory.  相似文献

Global warming may affect most organisms and their interactions. Theory and simple mesocosm experiments suggest that consumer top–down control over primary producer biomass should strengthen with warming, since consumer respiration increases faster with warming than plant photosynthesis. However, these predictions have so far not been tested on natural communities that have experienced warming over many generations. Natural systems display a higher diversity, heterogeneity and complexity than mesocosms, which could alter predicted effects of warming. Here we used an artificially heated part of the northern Baltic Sea (the Forsmark Biotest basin) to test how warming influences trophic interactions in a shallow coastal food web with four trophic levels: omnivorous fish, invertivorous fish, herbivorous invertebrates, and filamentous macroalgae. Monitoring of fish assemblages over six years showed that small invertivorous fish (gobiids, sticklebacks and minnows) were much less abundant in the heated basin than in unheated references areas. Stomach content analyses of the dominating omnivorous fish – Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis – revealed a strikingly different diet within and outside the Biotest basin; gammarid crustaceans were the dominating prey at heated sites, whereas invertivorous fish (e.g. gobiids) dominated at unheated sites. A 45‐day cage experiment showed that fish exclusion did not affect the biomass of algal herbivores (gastropods and gammarids), but reduced algal biomass in heated sites (but not unheated). This suggests that warming induced a trophic cascade from fish to algae, and that this effect was mediated by predator‐induced changes in herbivore behavior, rather than number. Overall, our study suggests that warming has effectively compressed the food chain from four to three trophic levels (algae, gammarids and perch), which have benefitted the primary producers by reducing grazing pressure.
