Background  

The use of molecular genetic data in phylogenetic systematics has revolutionized this field of research in that several taxonomic groupings defined by traditional taxonomic approaches have been rejected by molecular data. The taxonomic classification of the oribatid mite group Circumdehiscentiae ("Higher Oribatida") is largely based on morphological characters and several different classification schemes, all based upon the validity of diagnostic morphological characters, have been proposed by various authors. The aims of this study were to test the appropriateness of the current taxonomic classification schemes for the Circumdehiscentiae and to trace the evolution of the main diagnostic traits (the four nymphal traits scalps, centrodorsal setae, sclerits and wrinkled cuticle plus octotaxic system and pteromorphs both in adults) on the basis of a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis by means of parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian approaches.  相似文献

SUMMARY Traits from early development mapped onto phylogenetic trees can potentially offer insight into the evolutionary history of development by inferring the states of those characters among ancestors at nodes in the phylogeny. A key and often-overlooked aspect of such mapping is the underlying model of character evolution. Without a well-supported and realistic model ("nothing"), character mapping of ancestral traits onto phylogenetic trees might often return results ("something") that lack a sound basis. Here we reconsider a challenging case study in this area of evolutionary developmental biology: the inference of ancestral states for ecological and morphological characters in the reproduction and larval development of asterinid sea stars. We apply improved analytical methods to an expanded set of asterinid phylogenetic data and developmental character states. This analysis shows that the new methods might generally offer some independent insight into choice of a model of character evolution, but that in the specific case of asterinid sea stars the quantitative features of the model (especially the relative probabilities of different directions of change) have an important effect on the results. We suggest caution in applying ancestral state reconstructions in the absence of an independently corroborated model of character evolution, and highlight the need for such modeling in evolutionary developmental biology.  相似文献

The skeleton and musculature of male genitalia were studied in species of a model butterfly group (subtribe Polyommatina, Lycaenidae). In total, we analyzed 45 species of the tribe Polyommatini most of which were previously used in the molecular phylogenetic study (Talavera et al., 2013). The studied morphological characters were mapped on the molecular trees, which allowed us to reveal trends of morphological changes and to estimate the age of their origin. As a result, chronology of evolution of skeleton and musculature traits was established. It was shown that periods of slow morphological evolution alternated in the subtribe Polyommatina with those of a high rate of origin of new traits. For example, topography of the intravalvar muscles has not changed for 26 MY preserving their initial fan-shaped attachment. The evolution of intravalvar muscles started 10 MYA, proceeded slowly during the first 5 MY, and then accelerated during the last 5 MY resulting in the extensive splitting of the musculature in most monophyletic lineages. Mapping the morphological characters on the phylogeny demonstrated that the rates of skeleton and muscle evolution within the skeleton/musculature apparatus were different. In most cases the intravalvar musculature evolved much faster than the skeleton. The cladistic interpretation of states of morphological traits was found to be consistent with phylogenetic reconstructions based on analysis of multiple molecular markers. Moreover, morphological synapomorphies were found for the lineages Alpherakya + Glabroculus and Aricia + (Alpherakya + Glabroculus), which had low statistical support in molecular phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, in some cases molecular studies helped to reveal trends in the evolution of morphological traits. For example, the unpaired uncus and the compact juxta are not plesiomorphic for Cupidina as previously thought; instead, they were shown to have evolved secondarily within this subtribe.  相似文献

Five traits of early child development were studied in 656 infants from the day of birth till 2 years of age. The infants selected for follow-up were born at 26–42 weeks of gestational age and with a birth weight accordingly ranging from 860 to 4560g. Analysis of variance was carried out for each of the following five traits which entailed the age at which a child: 1) turned himself over (turned); 2) sat unsupported for a few seconds (sat); 3) stood up (stood); 4) walked unsupported (walked); and 5) cut its first tooth (tooth). The results of this survey show no significant sex differences in the age of initial occurrence of any of the studied traits. Comparison with older siblings of the surveyed infants indicated a significant sibling resemblance component for all 5 trais, with the respective intraclass correlation coefficients ranging between 0.34 and 0.53. Gestational age and birth weight, but not “tooth”, appeared to be important messages of an infant's motor development, insofar as onset of the studied traits. The separate correlations of “turned”, “sat”, “stood” and “walked” with gestational age or weight were all negative and statistically highly significant. Chronological peculiarities of genetic regulation of growth processes in morphological structures of postcranial skeleton ("body") and cranium ("head") were studied at different phases of peripubertal stage of boys ontogenesis. The component partitioning of the phenotype variance of individual scores of the structures considered revealed relative autonomy of chronogenetic systems controlling morphogenesis in the "body" and the "head". Succession of morphological organization is ensured by the stable level of correlation between morphological structures analysed. Raise in correlation is registered at the "critical" phase (13-14 years) which is connected with the "switching on" genetic programme of growth processes control in the adolescent period of human postnatal ontogenesis.  相似文献

Trade-offs are potentially common among two or more traits whose development is dependent on the same resources. To detect genetic trade-offs, the techniques of quantitative genetics, pedigree analyses, and selection experiments have been used. This study demonstrates genetically based trade-offs between gonads and appendages in hatched larvae of the aphid Prociphilus oriens by focusing on enlarged variance among the families of selfed progeny. The selfed and outbred families were compared in respect to the size of morphological traits, gonad volume, and hatch dates as well as egg volume. Selfing not only increased the among-family variance component in all larval traits examined, but it also increased the mean size of all the morphological traits significantly. In contrast, gonad volume, a fitness component, was reduced with selfing. Calculation of the allometry (log-transformed regression) of larval traits to egg volume indicated that in the outbred group, morphological traits grew slowly relative to egg volume with slopes below 0.25, whereas gonads exhibited isometric growth. With selfing, most morphological traits had significantly steeper slopes, whereas the slope for gonads was greatly decreased. When the effect of egg volume was statistically removed from the means of selfed families, significant negative correlation was detected between the adjusted means of gonad volume and those of tibia length. This result suggests genetic trade-offs between gonad volume and tibia length. Thus, the evidence implies that at the loci governing the development of appendages, the dominant alleles function to canalize the development of tibiae into an optimal size, irrespective of egg volume. It is hypothesized that increased homozygosity of the deleterious recessive alleles reduced gonad volume through increasing the resource allocation to tibiae. The hypothesis of the gonad-appendage trade-off could be applied to explain the phenotypic evolution in some aphid species.  相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) influencing morphological traits were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis in a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross of the cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum with a related wild species, Lycopersicon cheesmanii. One hundred and thirty-two RFLP loci spaced throughout the tomato genome were used as DNA probes on genomic DNA from 97 RIL families. Morphological traits, including plant height, plant fresh mass, number of branches, number of nodes, first flower-bearing node, and leaf length, were evaluated in two controlled environment trials in 1992 and 1993. QTLs were detected via regression analyses at multiple marker loci for each morphological trait. A total of 41 markers were significantly associated with the traits examined. Large additive effects were measured at many of these loci. QTLs for multiple traits were detected on chromosomes 3 (TG74) and 4 (CT188), suggesting the possible association of these chromosome segments with genes controlling growth and development in tomato. These chromosomal regions were also associated with multiple morphological traits in a L. esculentum x Lycopersicon pennellii cross. A total of 13% of the QTLs identified for traits common to both studies occupied similar map positions.  相似文献

叶龄是植株个体发育过程中性状变异的重要影响因素, 不同叶龄下的性状变异可以体现植物针对环境变化做出的响应。该研究以东北地区4个不同区域阔叶红松(Pinus koraiensis)林中的成年红松为研究对象, 测定了4个区域红松的叶寿命和不同针叶年龄叶片的比叶面积(SLA)、叶片干物质含量(LDMC)、针叶密度(ND)以及针叶体积(NV), 探讨了红松叶形态性状间的相关性, 并检验了纬度和针叶年龄对这些相关关系的影响。结果显示: (1)不同纬度下红松叶寿命存在显著差异, 随纬度增加呈单峰模式。(2)针叶年龄在性状变异解释中占比最大(34.2%-80.1%), 对4个叶形态性状均存在显著影响。SLALDMCND在当年生叶片中均表现了比所有龄级下更大的可塑性, 仅NV在所有龄级下的可塑性大于当年生叶片。(3) 4个性状间的二元相关性显著, 且在不同纬度下多有体现, 但性状间的回归斜率随纬度变化趋势存在差异。(4)不同针叶年龄性状间的相关关系依然显著但变异规律不同, 如SLAND的回归斜率随针叶年龄增加而减小, NDNV则相反。研究结果表明红松叶形态性状的变异和性状间的相关关系受纬度和针叶年龄的显著影响, 性状协同应对不同纬度梯度导致的环境变化以及不同针叶年龄下叶片的资源利用策略存在差异。  相似文献

To genetically analyse growth traits in genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT), the body weight (BWE) and main morphological traits, including body length (BL), body depth (BD), body width (BWI), head length (HL) and length of the caudal peduncle (CPL), were measured six times in growth duration on 1451 fish from 45 mixed families of full and half sibs. A random regression model (RRM) was used to model genetic changes of the growth traits with days of age and estimate the heritability for any growth point and genetic correlations between pairwise growth points. Using the covariance function based on optimal RRMs, the heritabilities were estimated to be from 0.102 to 0.662 for BWE, 0.157 to 0.591 for BL, 0.047 to 0.621 for BD, 0.018 to 0.577 for BWI, 0.075 to 0.597 for HL and 0.032 to 0.610 for CPL between 60 and 140 days of age. All genetic correlations exceeded 0.5 between pairwise growth points. Moreover, the traits at initial days of age showed less correlation with those at later days of age. With phenotypes observed repeatedly, the model choice showed that the optimal RRMs could more precisely predict breeding values at a specific growth time than repeatability models or multiple trait animal models, which enhanced the efficiency of selection for the BWE and main morphological traits.  相似文献

The paper deals with the diagnosis of demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, including multiple sclerosis, by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The low-magnetic induction tomographs "Obraz" ("Image") and "Ellips" ("Ellipse") made in Russia were used to perform MRI of the brain in 255 patients diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis. Whether low-magnetic induction MRI can detectfocal changes in the brain in the presence of multiple sclerosis was assessed; the tomographic signs of the disease were clarified and classified. There was a relationship between the detection of focal changes in the brain and the duration of the disease. Particular emphasis is laid on the cases of various abnormalities at MRI, which clinically mask multiple sclerosis. The cases are summarized and a list of conditions to be particularly emphasized while making a differential diagnosis is drawn up.  相似文献

Evolutionary developmental biology ("evo-devo") has revolutionized evolutionary biology but has had relatively little impact on systematics. We show that similar large-scale developmental changes in distantly related lineages can dramatically mislead phylogenetic analyses based on morphological data. Salamanders are important model systems in many fields of biology and are of special interest in that many species are paedomorphic and thus never complete metamorphosis. A recent study of higher-level salamander phylogeny placed most paedomorphic families in a single clade based on morphological data. Here, we use new molecular and morphological data to show that this result most likely was caused by the misleading effects of paedomorphosis. We also provide a well-supported estimate of higher-level salamander relationships based on combined molecular and morphological data. Many authors have suggested that paedomorphosis may be problematic in studies of salamander phylogeny, but this hypothesis has never been tested with a rigorous phylogenetic analysis. We find that the misleading effects of paedomorphosis on phylogenetic analysis go beyond the sharing of homoplastic larval traits by paedomorphic adults, and the problem therefore is not solved by simply excluding suspected paedomorphic characters. Instead, two additional factors are critically important in causing paedomorphic species to be phylogenetically "misplaced": (1) the absence of clade-specific synapomorphies that develop during metamorphosis in nonpaedomorphic taxa and allow their "correct" placement and (2) parallel adaptive changes associated with the aquatic habitat of the larval stage. Our results suggest that the effects of paedomorphosis on phylogenetic analyses may be complex, difficult to detect, and can lead to results that are both wrong and statistically well supported by parsimony and Bayesian analyses.  相似文献

The origin of land plants or embryophytes from the Charophyceae is generally accepted today by the botanists. In fact, numerous morphological, cytological, ultrastructural, biochemical and molecular characters are shared in these organisms. A fundamental problem is still constituted by the evolution of the sporophyte, i.e. the appearance of two different phase cycles (gametophyte/sporophyte alternance), although two theories ("antithetic" and "homologous") try to explain this evolutionary event.However, another phylogenetic dilemma is represented, in my opinion, either by the formation of bryophytes or by the transition from these first land plants to the pteridophytes, considering them at whole organism level.The bryophyte gametophyte is the most elaborate of the land plants. It presents several complex characters, principally the growth developmental form, the appearance of multicellular sex organs, antheridia and archegonia. Also the sporophyte shows a complicated structure that is not found in the other land plants or tracheophytes. The sporangium, in particular, exhibits some intricate morphological traits such as the peristome of true mosses for spore dispersion, the elaters of liverworts and the indeterminate growth in the hornworts.The pteridophytes are represented especially by their dominant sporophyte. This latter has the capacity to produce multiple sporangia and, in many cases, two kinds of spores which develop in male and female gametophyte (heterosporous pteridophytes). Another important characteristic of this sporophyte is its ability to become independent of the gametophyte. However, one of the most innovative character is the formation of true vascular elements (xylem and phloem).All these very large evolutionary jumps are discussed on the basis of the phyletic gradualistic neo-Darwinian theory and the punctuated equilibrium theory of Eldredge and Gould. In this context other genetic evolutionary mechanisms are also considered.Nevertheless, the origin of bryophytes and pteridophytes remain, at the moment, a mystery.  相似文献

Naturally grown cell material of Crenothrix polyspora from the well of a waterworks was studied by means of phase-contrast and Nomarski interference microscopy as well as by transmission electron microscopy. The material consisted of clusters of sheathed filaments up to 2 cm long. Propagation forms observed were nonmotile, spherical cells that arose by simple ("macrogonidia") or multiple ("microgonidia") septation of the filamental tips. Ultrastructural analysis revealed Crenothrix to be procaryotic and gram negative, with several layers of sheath material surrounding the filaments. On thin sections, individual cells had elaborate membrane systems in the form of lamellar stacks. They resembled thylakoids of photosynthetic bacteria. Spectrophotometric analysis gave no indication of photosynthetic pigments. The cells also contained large hexagonal bodies, rod-shaped fibrillar elements, and polyphosphate granules.  相似文献

This study represents the first formal morphological and combined (morphological and molecular) phylogenetic analyses of the order Ephemeroptera. Taxonomic sampling comprised 112 species in 107 genera, including 42 recognized families (all major lineages of Ephemeroptera). Morphological data consisted of 101 morphological characters. Molecular data were acquired from DNA sequences of the 12S, 16S, 18S, 28S and H3 genes. The Asian genus Siphluriscus (Siphluriscidae) was supported as sister to all other mayflies. The lineages Carapacea, Furcatergalia, Fossoriae, Pannota, Caenoidea and Ephemerelloidea were supported as monophyletic, as were many of the families. However, some recognized families (for example, Ameletopsidae and Coloburiscidae) and major lineages (such as Setisura, Pisciforma and Ephemeroidea among others) were not supported as monophyletic, mainly due to convergences within nymphal characters. Clade robustness was evaluated by multiple methods and approaches.  相似文献

Somatic angiotensin converting enzyme (sACE), contains in its single chain two homologous domains (called N- and C-domains), each bearing a functional zinc-dependent active site. The present study aims to define the differences between two sACE domains and to localize experimentally revealed antigenic determinants (B-epitopes) in the recently determined three-dimensional structure of testicular tACE. The predicted linear antigenic determinants of human sACE were determined by peptide scanning ("PEPSCAN") approach. Essential difference was demonstrated between locations of the epitopes in the N- and C-domains. Comparison of arrangement of epitopes in the human domains with the corresponding sequences of some mammalian sACEs enabled to classify the revealed antigenic determinants as variable or conserved areas. The location of antigenic determinants with respect to various structural elements and to functionally important sites of the human sACE C-domain was estimated. The majority of antigenic sites of the C-domain were located at the irregular elements and at the boundaries of secondary structure elements. The data show structural differences between the sACE domains. The experimentally revealed antigenic determinants were in agreement with the recently determined crystal tACE structure. New potential applications are open to successfully produce mono-specific and group-specific antipeptide antibodies.  相似文献

In addition, the aggressive behaviour and some morphological characters have been investigated and checked for a possible correlation between and within these three different traits studied. We studied the sibling similarity in development of covariation among body size characters (body weight (W), body length (S) and head circumference (HC) in Tel Aviv infants from birth up to 2 years of age. We investigated the effects of parental geographic origin, profession, age, current residence, and of family size. Multiple regression analysis with "dummy" procedure established that none of these variables had any significant effect on the aforementioned anthropometric traits. The matrices of phenotypic and genetic correlations, based on sibling similarity data, among age-specific W, S, and HC (measured for 12 different ages) were subjected to principal component analysis in order to elucidate patterns over the age groups. The patterns of both analyses, phenotypic and genetic, were quite similar: one factor in each (first genetic and second phenotypic) had a high positive correlation with early, first 2-3 months of life, W, S, and HC. Three other extracted factors correlated strongly, each with late W, S, and HC, respectively. The results of additional principal component analyses of age-specific W, S, and HC matrices separately, indicate the possibility of existence of two genetic subsystems, the first determining early postnatal stages of human ontogeny, and the second, later phases of child development.  相似文献

"In vivo" and "in vitro" morphological analysis of associations of cells ("rosettes") involved in immune response in human tumoral effusions revealed the existence of cell interactions either by simple membrane apposition between the cell projections or by gap-like junctions between two adjacent cells; endocytotic phenomena were also observed. Sexually selected exaggerated traits are often coupled with modifications in other nontarget traits. In insects with weapons, enlargements of nontarget characters that functionally support the weapon often occur (i.e. supportive traits). The support of sexual traits requires developmental coordination among functionally related multiple traits—an explicit example of morphological integration. The genetic theory predicts that developmental integration among different body modules, for which development is regulated via different sets of genes, is likely to be coordinated by pleiotropic factors. However, the developmental backgrounds of morphological integrations are largely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that the juvenile hormone (JH), as a pleiotropic factor, mediates the integration between exaggerated and supportive traits in an armed beetle Gnatocerus cornutus. During combat, males of this beetle use exaggerated mandibles to lift up their opponents with the supportive traits, that is, the head and prothoracic body parts. Application of methoprene, a JH analog (JHA), during the larval to prepupal period, induced the formation of large mandibles relative to the body sizes in males. Morphometric examination of nontarget traits elucidated an increase in the relative sizes of supportive traits, including the head and prothoracic body parts. In addition, reductions in the hind wing area and elytra length, which correspond to flight and reproductive abilities, were detected. Our findings are consistent with the genetic theory and support the idea that JH is a key pleiotropic factor that coordinates the developmental integration of exaggerated traits and supportive characters, as well as resource allocation trade‐offs.  相似文献
