Abstract. 1. At Halcyon Hotsprings, British Columbia, Canada, male and female Argia vivida Hagen encountered to mate in two different ways.
2. In the morning (before 12.30 hours solar time), males basked at sunspots in the forest and darted out at passing females, attempting to take them in tandem (the first method of encounter).
3. If a male was successful, the pair engaged in a 31.3±4.8 min copulation followed by an hour of tandem flight before beginning oviposition.
4. As the day progressed, unmated males moved slowly toward the water and arrived at the water at about the same time as the earliest ovipositing pairs (1131±27.5 min solar time).
5. Males retained their grasp on their mates during oviposition (contact-guarding) but since some tandems separated during oviposition, non-tandem males at the water could capture recently released, gravid females (the second method of encounter).
6. The new pairs performed a brief copulation (10.2±3.38 min) and began ovipositing immediately thereafter.
7. Some females that avoided recapture attempted to oviposit unguarded.
8. We believe the long duration of morning copulations and period of tandem constitute a male strategy, which we call 'pre-oviposition guarding', to guard females until it is warm enough at the oviposition site for the females to begin ovipositing.
9. Separation of tandems during oviposition may be initiated by either member of the pair and we suggest that one benefit to a female of leaving a guarding mate is increased efficiency of oviposition when the intensity of male harassment is low.
10. The mating system of A. vivida thus comprises a series of complementary male and female mating behaviours.  相似文献

Mating and oviposition behaviors were studied inCallosobruchus subinnotatus. Copulation was most frequent during the late scotophase, 2–3 h before onset of photophase. The females were less willing to mate during photophase, which increased the time to initiate mating while decreasing the duration of mating. Females exhibited increased movement prior to mating, resting immediately after mating, and remained stationary for 6 h when oviposition commenced. Multiple mating by both males and females affected the number of eggs laid, duration of mating, and uncoupling time at the end of mating. Females that mated two or three times laid more eggs than females that mated once or more than three times. Females that remainedin copula for less than 18 min showed greater readiness to remate than those that remainedin copula longer. There was a gradual decrease in the number of eggs females could lay with an increase in the number of previous matings by males.  相似文献

Mating more than once is extremely costly for females in many species, making the near ubiquity of polyandry difficult to understand. However, evidence of mating costs for males is much rarer. We investigated the effects of copulation on longevity of male and female flies (Saltella sphondylli). We also scrutinized potential fecundity and fertility benefits to females with differing mating history. Copulation per se was found to decrease the longevity of males but not that of females. However, when females were allowed to lay eggs, females that mated died earlier than virgin females, indicating costs of egg production and/or oviposition. Thus, although longevity costs of copulation are higher for males, reproduction is nevertheless costly for females. We also found no differences in fecundity or fertility relative to female mating history. Results suggest that polyandry may be driven by minor costs rather than by major benefits in this species.  相似文献

The effects of the second mating on fecundity and fertility of potato tuber moth (PTM) Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), when females were mated with 450 Gy-irradiated and normal males or vice versa, were studied. The percentage of eggs fertilized by sperm of the second mating (P2 value) was 0.99, indicating that sperm transferred during the last mating were predominantly utilized in egg fertilization. Females, mated first with irradiated males, remated after 2 days, whereas those mated with normal males, remated after 3.3 days. Fecundity of twice-mated females was higher than those mated only once. Females started to lay their eggs 1.9 days after the first mating, regardless of the type of male. However, virgin females did not lay eggs at all. Duration of copulation varied from 102 to 117 min for normal and irradiated males, respectively. The present study elucidated important aspects of mating behaviour of PTM which could improve the efficiency of its control by the sterile insect technique.  相似文献

Abstract.  To comprehend the significance of multiple mating in female Callosobruchus maculatus , the material-benefits hypothesis is tested, as well as the potential function and mechanism of additional mating for females. The results show that longevity and lifetime fecundity are significantly higher in doubly-mated females, whereas females subject to an interrupted second copulation (which transfers no ejaculate) show resemblance with singly-mated females in lifetime fecundity and daily fecundity, supporting the material-benefits hypothesis. Female lifetime fecundity increases with ejaculate size in doubly-, but not singly-mated females. Doubly-mated females exhibit an immediate increase in fecundity on the day of remating. Moreover, dissection of ovaries after remating shows that the number of unlaid eggs is lower in doubly-mated females in comparison with singly-mated females, whereas the total number of unlaid and laid eggs shows no significant difference. This suggests that the second mating increases the oviposition rate, but not the egg maturation rate in female C. maculatus . Thus, ejaculate serves as a stimulus for oviposition, at least on the remating day. However, because doubly-mated females lay more eggs in total than singly-mated females, doubly-mated females appear to mature more eggs than the singly-mated counterparts. This is attributed to the 'indirect-driven' hypothesis, which states that the reduction in the number of mature eggs in the oviducts brought about by oviposition stimulates the maturation of oocytes in ovarioles to replenish the number of mature eggs.  相似文献

Mating results in a strong suppression of sex pheromone (bombykol) production in the female silkworm moth, Bombyx mori. The mechanical stimulation from the insertion of a penis, inflation of the bursa copulatrix (BC), or copulation with the sterile male whose penis was removed in order to prevent ejaculation (pr-male) induced only a partial decline in bombykol production. Artificial insemination stimulates oviposition of fertilized eggs as does normal mating. However, bombykol production did not decline in artificially inseminated females. When females were artificially inseminated before or after mating with pr-males, some females had a small amount of bombykol, similar to females mated with normal males, while other females had a large amount of bombykol similar to virgin females. The former usually laid fertilized eggs, while the latter laid only unfertilized eggs though semen filled their spermatophores and spermathecae. The mechanical stimulation caused by mating with a pr-male could be replaced by covering the abdominal tip with melted paraffin. Neither implantation of the BC obtained from mated females, nor injection of the spermatophore extract, into a female mated with a pr-male could inactivate bombykol production. Injection of hemolymph from a mated female into a virgin also failed to affect bombykol production These results indicate that a combination of both the tactile stimulation of the abdominal tip and the arrival of fertile spermatozoa in the vestibulum trigger a neural inactivation mechanism of bombykol production after mating.  相似文献

Abstract. Mating behaviour, sperm transfer and sperm precedence were studied in the moth Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). There existed a rhythmic, diel pattern of mating behaviour of this moth during the scotophase, presumably set with respect to an endogenous activity rhythm. Approximately 30 min after copulation had started, the formation of the corpus of the spermatophore began in the bursa copulatrix of the female moth, but full inflation of the corpus was not completed until 45–60 min after mating had started. The mature spermatophore contained about 350 eupyrene sperm bundles and a large number of individual (loose) apyrene spermatozoa. The mating status and the age of the male insect influenced the number of sperm transferred to the female within the spermatophore, and also affected the consequent fertility. There was no evidence of sperm reflux within the male tract. Within the female, dissociation of eupyrene sperm bundles was evident within the spermatophore less than 15 min after the completion of mating. Spermatozoa began to move from the bursa (in which the spermatophore is lodged) into the spermatheca 30–45 min after the end of the copulation, and the quantity of sperm in the spermatheca reached a plateau at 90 min after mating. Apyrene sperm reached the spermatheca first, followed by eupyrene sperm. Examination of total (apyrene plus eupyrene) sperm in the female tract showed that 86% of mated females received an apparently normal amount of total sperm from the male. Examination of eupyrene sperm alone showed that 81% of matings resulted in an apparently normal transfer of eupyrene sperm. A small proportion (approximately 8%) of the matings, however, were identified as transferring a clearly subnormal quantity of eupyrene sperm to the spermatheca. The eggs produced as a result of such pairings displayed much reduced fertility (about 43%) compared to those from matings confirmed to have transferred normal quantities of sperm, which showed about 92% fertility. This shows that the availability of eupyrene sperm in the spermatheca may be an important constraint on fertility in normal populations of insects. In the laboratory, S. litura females exhibited multiple matings. Of the females, 93% mated, and the mean frequency of mating was 1.69. Mating with a fertile male led to the oviposition of an increased number of eggs. This effect continued even when the female subsequently mated with an infertile male. Displacement of sperm from previous matings is known to be an important factor in the evolution of multiple mating strategies. Our results on sperm utilization by S. litura indicated that after a second mating, the sperm utilized for subsequent fertilization were almost exclusively from the last mating with little mixing. The proportion of eggs fertilized by sperm from the second mating (P2) was calculated as 0.95, indicating almost complete sperm precedence from the last mating.  相似文献

Abstract.  The effects of a sublethal dose of chlorfluazuron on egg hatching in Spodoptera litura are examined under laboratory conditions. When LD10 of chlorfluazuron is topically applied to newly moulted fifth-instar larvae of either sex, a significant reduction in both the number of eggs laid and subsequent hatching is observed after mating but no significant differences in daily of oviposition are observed when compared with the controls. In addition, examination of the unhatched eggs reveals that the number of unfertilized eggs is greater than those that were fertilized but there are significantly more unfertilized eggs laid by treated insects. Interference by chlorfluazuron, transferred by copulation through sperm fluids or ova, appears improbable. All the fertilized unhatched eggs in the treated crosses die at an earlier stage than those of the controls. In the female-treated crosses, the egg size is significantly reduced compared with the control or male-treated crosses. During mating, the treated-males transferred significantly lower-weight spermatophores into the females. The weight of spermatophores transferred by untreated males is the same to both treated and untreated females. The duration of mating is not affected by chlorfluazuron treatment.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Field and laboratory observations on the mating behaviour of Gerris lateralis Schumm. allowed three distinct phases to be distinguished: (i) a precopulatory phase (1.5min, SD=1.3), (ii) copulation (16.2min, SD=12.9), and (iii) a postcopulatory phase. The duration of the postcopulatory phase, during which the male rode passively on the back of the female without genital contact, varied considerably (11 min to > 48h). Females appeared reluctant in all matings, and matings were forced by males.
2. Laboratory experiments showed that the females were able to store sperm for more than 30 days without decrease in fertilization rate. In double mating experiments, where partially sterilized males were used, it was demonstrated that sperm displacement was extensive. The last male to mate fertilized approximately 80% of the eggs.
3. It is concluded that the postcopulatory behaviour is beneficial to males in terms of paternity assurance, and it is interpreted as a mate guarding behaviour.  相似文献

Males of the sorghum plant bug, Stenotus rubrovittatus (Matsumura) (Heteroptera: Miridae), transfer a spermatophore to females during copulation. After a 1‐day interval between the first and second copulation, males transferred both sperm and a spermatophore to females during the second copulation. However, when male mating interval was <1 h, they transferred sperm but no spermatophores to females during the second copulation. Therefore, the male mating interval probably produces two types of mated females, those with and those without a spermatophore. Mated females of S. rubrovittatus do not remate for at least 3 days after mating, even when courted, and lay more eggs than virgin females at the beginning of the oviposition period. The effects of spermatophores on female sexual receptivity and fecundity were examined using mated females with or without a spermatophore. Only one of the 40 (2.5%) mated females with a spermatophore remated, whereas 10 of the 26 (38.5%) without a spermatophore remated. Furthermore, mated females with a spermatophore laid more eggs than those without a spermatophore. These results suggest that spermatophores participate in reducing female sexual receptivity and enhancing female fecundity in S. rubrovittatus.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between the number of sperm in the seminal receptacle (spermatheca) and the receptivity of female remating in the bean bugRiptortus clavatus Thunberg. On the 21 st day after the first mating when receptivity to remating was > 70%, females receptive to remating had significantly fewer sperm ( < 40 on average) in the spermathecae than females reluctant to do (about 150 on average). However, averages of the number of eggs laid by receptive and reluctant females within 21 days were almost same. The proportion of fertilized eggs for receptive females at 15–21 days after copulation was significantly lower than that for reluctant females. Spermatozoa transferred from a male to a female’s spermatheca were detected 5 min after copulation and then increased continuously to about 500 with the first hour. When copulation durations were manipulated artificially, the shorter the copulation period (=females had less sperm in their spermathecae), the higher the remating rate became. Females may perceive the number of sperm in their seminal receptacles and then determine whether they copulate or not. These results support the hypothesis that females mate multiply in order to replenish inadequate sperm supplies to fertilize all eggs produced.  相似文献

Females of the viviparous cockroach Diploptera punctata store sperm from their first mating, and do not remate until after giving birth to their first batch of young. The irradiated male technique was used to determine the outcome of sperm competition in the second batch of eggs of females mated sequentially to normal and irradiated males. It is estimated that the second male to mate with a female fertilizes approximately two thirds of the eggs in a female's second batch of eggs. Direct evidence for sperm mixing was obtained. Undeveloped eggs (fertilized by irradiated sperm) and developing embryos (fertilized by normal sperm) were found interspersed throughout oothecae that were extruded from females, demonstrating that normal and irradiated sperm were released from the spermathecae at oviposition and that they competed for fertilizations.  相似文献

Reproductive success, copulation success, and mating success were measured for a population of male dragonflies,Orthetrum japonicum. Copulation success explained the greatest variation in reproductive success. The proportion of copulations followed by oviposition was positively correlated with the number of oviposited eggs per mating. Directional selection on four morphological characters was estimated. The effect of selection on correlated traits was comparable to that of direct selection. Directional selection varied between traits and between episodes in a single trait. The probability that the observed directional selection on the four morphological traits was expected under the condition of the selective neutrality of traits was not smaller than 5%.  相似文献

Males of the bushcricket Poecilimon veluchianus pass a large spermatophore to the female during mating. The spermatophore is eaten by the female after copulation. Because females mate with several males during their reproductive life, the competition between spermatozoa of different males affects a male's reproductive success. In order to determine the outcome of sperm competition, the paternity of the progeny of double–mated females was established by DNA fingerprinting with the oligonucleotide (GATA)4. Typical P. veluchianus DNA fingerprints consisted of 15 scoreable fragments per individual. The proportion of bands shared between presumably unrelated bushcrickets was 17%. After the second copulation the second mating male clearly predominated at fertilization. The mean proportion of eggs fertilized by the second male was 90.1%. There was no significant relationship between the level of sperm precedence and the time of ovipositions after the second mating. If female P. veluchianus increase the fitness of their offspring by the incorporation of spermatophore–derived substances in developing eggs, there is little chance for the feeding male to fertilize eggs containing his nutrients, because of the very short mating intervals of females and the observed high level of last–male sperm precedence in this species. Under such conditions the last mating male would fertilize many eggs containing nutrients from a prior male. Because nuptial gifts, like the tettigoniid spermatophore, function only as paternal investment if the donating male's progeny benefit from the gift, a paternal investment function of the P. veluchianus spermatophore seems to be unlikely.  相似文献

The behavior of females of the damselflyMnais pruinosa was observed in the breeding season. Males consisted of both territorial (esakii) and non-territorial (strigata) types in the study area. Females sometimes arrived at a stream for mating and oviposition. The staying time of females in the stream was 1–3 hours, while that of males was 5–8 hours. The proportion of the males that copulated with the females did not differ between the two male forms present in the stream. In the Calopterygidae, of which the females usually perform multiple copulation, oviposition without subsequent recopulation is considered to be advantageous for a mated male in order to avoid the risk of sperm displacement. From such a viewpoint, the time spent for oviposition was measured for females that arrived at the stream after copulation with different male forms. The ratio was 69.1: 11.5–30.9 betweenesakii andstrigata males. Assuming that the oviposition time is proportional to the number of fertilized eggs laid, this ratio would represent the relative reproductive success of the two male forms. In fact, the relative abundance of the two male forms was also biased in favor ofesakii males (61.7:38.3) in this population. The mechanism of coexistence of the two male forms is discussed in relation to their reproductive success.  相似文献

Two aspects of mating effects on the fecundity, sex ratio and longevity of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were examined in laboratory experiments: (1) females mated by one, two or three different males (unmated and 3 days old) at 5-day intervals, and (2) females mated by males with different age/mating status (number of females mated previously by the male). Females allowed to mate with a second or third male at 5-day intervals produced 39 eggs on average, but those mated with a single male produced 28 eggs on average. Matings with additional males 5 or 10 days after the first male increased the duration of the oviposition period of these females by 5–7 days and at the same time reduced the post-oviposition period by about 10 days. Overall, females with additional matings by one or two different males at 5-day intervals survived a few days shorter than females without additional males. Mating with a different female each day, a male of N. cucumeris could mate with 5–8 females, which produced a total of 85–116 eggs: females mated with a male during days 1 and 2 in its adulthood and with a male of the last 2 days of life (days 7 and 8) produced about half as many eggs as females mated with a male during 3–6 days of its adulthood. Females mated with males that are too young or too old had a shorter oviposition period and a longer post-oviposition period and longevity than females mated with middle-aged males. In both experiments, rates of oviposition remained similar in females with high or low fecundity. This indicates that in both cases, the increased fecundity is due to the extension of the oviposition period through additional sperm supplied by the second male and or third male (in experiment 1) or more sperm by males not too young nor too old (experiment 2).  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Females of the water strider Aquarius paludum insularis (Motschulsky) (Heteroptera: Gerridae) carry males on their backs and oviposit under water after copulation. This study focuses on the benefit  A. paludum insularis receives by ovipositing in tandem.
2. Males guarded females in tandem through to the end of oviposition in 85% of copulations. Females in tandem dived deeper than single females, and the density of A. paludum insularis eggs increased with water depth. The proportion of eggs parasitized by a scelionid wasp, Tiphodytes gerriphagus Marchal (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) decreased with increasing water depth.
3. These results suggest that during oviposition guarding by males is beneficial for females, because it enables pairs to dive and lay eggs deeper and in oviposition sites where the risk of egg parasitism is lower.  相似文献
