Practical aspects of urinary estrogen analysis were considered with regard to establishing simple and reliable methods for monitoring ovarian function in marmosets and tamarins. Changes in the hormone:creatinine ratio in small volumes of urine from the common marmoset were significantly correlated with changes in 24-h excretion. Comparison of the metabolism and excretion of estrogens during the ovarian cycle in the common marmoset and cottontop tamarin revealed interesting species differences. High concentrations of conjugated estrone were measured in marmoset plasma, but estradiol 17β was the predominant estrogen in urine. In contrast, estrone was the most abundant estrogen measured in tamarin urine. Both species excreted very little estriol. Sulfates and glucuronides were present in urine in similar proportions before ovulation in the marmoset, although after ovulation sulfates were the more abundant. Conversely, most of the estrogens in tamarin urine appeared to be conjugated as glucuronides. Direct assay for estrone sulfate was applied to the measurement of urinary estrogen excretion during the ovarian cycle in a marmoset. The results compared well with those for total estradiol 17β after hydrolysis and ether extraction. The use of direct assays for conjugated estrogens in small volumes of urine is suggested as a practical method for monitoring ovarian function in marmosets and tamarins.  相似文献

12 marmosets of 3 different species died of hepatitis during a period of 5 months. The lesions closely resembled those of virus hepatitis in man but material from these animals and from in-contact marmosets failed to reveal the presence of hepatitis A. This together with certain aspects of the epidemiology of the disease suggests that the outbreak was not caused by a virus of human origin but possibly by a virus indigenous to the marmoset or tamarin.  相似文献

Background  Marmosets and tamarins are increasingly used in research, but their pathology remains poorly defined compared with Old World primates.

Methods  Necropsy records of 129 marmosets and 52 tamarins were reviewed; none was used experimentally.

Results  The most common marmoset lesions were dehydration, emaciation, nephritis, colitis, and inanition. The most common tamarin lesions were dehydration, ascites, emaciation, and congestive heart failure. Colitis and heart disease were the most common cause of death in marmosets and tamarins, respectively. Immature marmoset and tamarin deaths often occurred within the first month of life. Immature marmosets usually died from inanition, stillbirth, and colitis; immature tamarins from atelectasis, stillbirth, heart failure, and colitis. Lymphoma was the most common neoplasm for both marmosets and tamarins.

Conclusion  The findings were similar to prior reports with differences in frequency and severity. We report the first case of endometriosis in a marmoset.  相似文献

Paternal behaviour is critical for the survival of offspring in many monogamous species. Common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) and cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) fathers spend as much or more time caring for infants than mothers. Expectant males of both species showed significant increases in weight across the pregnancy whereas control males did not (five consecutive months for marmoset males and six months for cotton-top tamarin males). Expectant fathers might be preparing for the energetic cost of fatherhood by gaining weight during their mate's pregnancy.  相似文献

New World monkeys are valuable animal models to study human diseases. To determine the phenotype of cells involved in immune responses, we used flow cytometry to screen a large panel of anti-human monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for cross-reactivity with cells of the common marmoset and the cotton-top tamarin. Certain antigens (e.g., CD2, CD8, CD20) are well conserved. However, CD10, CD23, and CD33 showed a clear discrepancy in their reaction patterns in both species, indicating that significant differences on the epitope level occurred during evolution. Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B-cell lines were shown to be a valuable tool for screening B-cell-specific reagents. In some cases, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and phycoerythrin (PE) modification of mAbs had a negative effect on the binding capacity, which stressed the importance of choosing the right label. Despite the fact that some CD antigens were not detected, adequate numbers of cross-reactive mAbs were identified to perform extensive studies on immunological functions in both the common marmoset and the cotton-top tamarin.  相似文献

Although many members of the Callitrichidae, a monophyletic family of small, New World monkeys, have been observed to feed on plant exudates, available field data support the generalization that pygmy and common marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea and Callithrix jacchus) feed on gums to a greater extent than most other callitrichids. Because microbial fermentation is required for vertebrates to digest gums, gum-feeding primates may react differently to dietary gum from their relatives that eat little gum. To test this hypothesis, digestion trials were conducted on animals from the two marmoset species, two tamarin species (Saguinus fuscicollis and S. oedipus), and a species of lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia). These species span the range of body sizes within the Callitrichidae. All animals were fed two variations of a homogeneous diet, which differed only in that gum arabic was added to one. Transit time of digesta (TFA) and digestive efficiency (as measured by the coefficients of apparent digestibility of dry matter and energy [ADDM and ADE, respectively]) were compared between diets for each individual. As predicted, the digestive responses of marmosets differed from the responses of the other study species. In marmosets, TFA tended to be longer when gum was added to the diet, while TFA did not change in the other three species. Digestive efficiency decreased in tamarins and lion tamarins with the addition of gum to the diet; marmoset digestive efficiency was unaffected by diet. The results of this research are consistent with the hypothesis that marmosets have digestive adaptations that aid in the digestion of gum that other callitrichids lack. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Twin, white-fronted marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) born and raised in a zoo in Japan died at 7 mo of age. Several encapsulated nematode larvae were detected in the intestinal wall, as well as a few in the mesenteric lymph nodes of 1 of the twins. In the other marmoset, no encapsulated nematode larva was detected in the organs, but many adult Pterygodermatites nycticebi were found in the intestinal lumen. In the past 5 yr, 5 primates kept in the same zoo, i.e., 1 squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), 2 Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), 1 Senegal galago (Galago senegalensis), and 1 cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), died from heavy infestation with the same nematode. A few migrating larvae of the rictulariid were also identified histologically in the intestinal wall and liver of the cotton-top tamarin. Although no other primate currently held in the same zoo was infected with the rictulariid, German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) collected with traps near marmoset cages had encapsulated P. nycticebi larvae, indicating latent perpetuation of the life cycle of this rictulariid species in the zoo premises. Our results indicated that encapsulation or migration of third-stage larvae of P. nycticebi might occur accidentally in the organs of callithrichid primates.  相似文献

The callitrichid primates, Callithrix jacchus jacchus (the marmoset) and Saguinus labiatus (the tamarin) were inoculated with infective larvae of Brugia malayi and B. pahangi. Microfilaraemia at low levels developed in 3 out of 4 C.j. jacchus infected with B. malayi and living or dead adult worms found in all 4. Only one of 4 C.j. jacchus became microfilaraemic (mf + ve) when given B. pahangi and adults were found in two. Of 4 S. labiatus given B. pahangi one became very lightly mf + ve and adults were found in 3. It is concluded that these animals are not suitable hosts for chemotherapeutic experiments.  相似文献

The cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) is a naturally occurring "A" + "B"----"A" bone marrow-chimeric species. These primates usually are born as dizygotic twins and, due to placental vascular anastomoses, develop sharing each others' bone marrow elements. Strikingly, almost 50% of the PBL of a member of a twin pair are derived from the hematopoietic stem cells of its cotwin. To clarify the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of tolerance in these stable chimeras, MHC gene products have been biochemically characterized in cloned, genetically distinct, male and female lymphocytes from two male/female cotton-top tamarin twin pairs. Extensive MHC class II sharing between the genetically distinct cell populations was not seen in the two twin pairs. This was consistent with the MHC class II polymorphism seen in the species. However, the MHC class I gene products expressed by one member of a twin pair were almost identical to those expressed by its cotwin. A human minisatellite probe demonstrated restriction fragment length polymorphism in DNA from these animals, indicating extensive polymorphism. Thus, MHC class I sharing did not occur due to inbreeding in these animals. Additionally, another bone marrow-chimeric primate species, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), expresses MHC class I molecules with low levels of variation. These studies suggest that the stable chimerism of bone marrow-chimeric primates may be facilitated by MHC class I similarity between the genetically distinct bone marrow derived-cell populations in their circulation.  相似文献

To assess the important aspects of a large area for environmental enrichment, the behavior of families of common marmosets Callithrix jacchus and cotton-top tamarins Saguinus oedipus when in laboratory cages and when in much larger outside areas was compared. All animals avoided areas with little cover. The two tamarin families preferred an indoor cage to a large open area with little cover and consequently only showed a limited range of behavior when outside. When dense cover was provided to the marmoset family, they used this area extensively, showing a wider range of behavior than when in cages and shifting to less active behavior patterns. By feeding marmosets in a central area, it was possible to allow unlimited access to the outside while effectively containing them.  相似文献

Non-human primates (NHPs) offer valuable animal models for basic research into human diseases and for the preclinical validation of new therapeutics. Detailed in situ examination of the involved cell types using immunohistochemistry is often hampered by the lack of cross-reactive antibodies (Abs). In the current study, we have tested a large panel of monoclonal antibodies raised against human leukocyte differentiation and activation markers for cross-reactivity on cryosections of lymphoid tissue from six NHP species. In total, we have tested 130 Abs against 69 antigens expressed in tissues from one great ape species (chimpanzee/Pan troglodytes), two Old World species (rhesus macaque/Macaca mulatta and cynomolgus macaque/Macaca fascicularis), and three New World species (common marmoset/Callithrix jacchus, cotton-top tamarin/Saguinus oedipus, and owl monkey/Aotus triviogatus). We have found a large panel of cross-reactive Abs: 93 of 102 (91%) in chimpanzee, 97 of 125 (78%) in rhesus macaque, 70 of 109 (64%) in cynomolgus macaque, 69 of 116 (60%) in common marmoset, 40 of 81 (49%) in cotton-top tamarin, and 35 of 80 (44%) in owl monkey. The availability of a reliable panel of cross-reactive markers is important to gaining further insight into immunological processes in disease-affected tissues from NHP species. Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) (Callitrichidae, Primates) share a broadly similar diet of fruits, insects, and tree exudates. Common marmosets, however, differ from tamarins by actively gouging trees with their anterior teeth to elicit tree exudate flow. During tree gouging, marmosets produce relatively large jaw gapes, but do not necessarily produce relatively large bite forces at the anterior teeth. We compared the fiber architecture of the masseter muscle in tree-gouging Callithrix jacchus (n = 10) to nongouging Saguinus oedipus (n = 8) to determine whether the marmoset masseter facilitates producing these large gapes during tree gouging. We predict that the marmoset masseter has relatively longer fibers and, hence, greater potential muscle excursion (i.e., a greater range of motion through increased muscle stretch). Conversely, because of the expected trade-off between excursion and force production in muscle architecture, we predict that the cotton-top tamarin masseter has more pinnate fibers and increased physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) as compared to common marmosets. Likewise, the S. oedipus masseter is predicted to have a greater proportion of tendon relative to muscle fiber as compared to the common marmoset masseter. Common marmosets have absolutely and relatively longer masseter fibers than cotton-top tamarins. Given that fiber length is directly proportional to muscle excursion and by extension contraction velocity, this result suggests that marmosets have masseters designed for relatively greater stretching and, hence, larger gapes. Conversely, the cotton-top tamarin masseter has a greater angle of pinnation (but not significantly so), larger PCSA, and higher proportion of tendon. The significantly larger PCSA in the tamarin masseter suggests that their masseter has relatively greater force production capabilities as compared to marmosets. Collectively, these results suggest that the fiber architecture of the common marmoset masseter is part of a suite of features of the masticatory apparatus that facilitates the production of relatively large gapes during tree gouging.  相似文献

The New World primate Aotus nancymaae has been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a model for evaluation of malaria vaccine candidates, given its susceptibility to experimental infection with the human malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. We present here the nucleotide sequences of the complete cDNA of MHC-DQA1 and of the polymorphic exon 2 segments of MHC-DQB1/DQB2. In a group of three nonrelated animals captured in the wild, five alleles of MHC-DQA1 could be identified. They all belong to one lineage, namely Aona-DQA1*27. This lineage has not been described in any other New World monkey species studied. In a group of 19 unrelated animals, 14 Aona-DQB1 alleles could be identified which are grouped into the two lineages Aona-DQB1*22 and Aona-DQB1*23. These lineages have been described previously in the common marmoset and cotton-top tamarin. In addition, two Aona-DQB2 sequences could be identified which are highly similar to HLA-DQB2 sequences. Essential amino acid residues contributing to MHC DQ peptide binding pockets number 1 and 4 are conserved or semi-conserved between HLA-DQ and Aona-DQ molecules, indicating a capacity to bind similar peptide repertoires. These results fully support the use of Aotus monkeys as an animal model for evaluation of future subunit vaccine candidates.  相似文献

Theories of music evolution agree that human music has an affective influence on listeners. Tests of non-humans provided little evidence of preferences for human music. However, prosodic features of speech (‘motherese’) influence affective behaviour of non-verbal infants as well as domestic animals, suggesting that features of music can influence the behaviour of non-human species. We incorporated acoustical characteristics of tamarin affiliation vocalizations and tamarin threat vocalizations into corresponding pieces of music. We compared music composed for tamarins with that composed for humans. Tamarins were generally indifferent to playbacks of human music, but responded with increased arousal to tamarin threat vocalization based music, and with decreased activity and increased calm behaviour to tamarin affective vocalization based music. Affective components in human music may have evolutionary origins in the structure of calls of non-human animals. In addition, animal signals may have evolved to manage the behaviour of listeners by influencing their affective state.  相似文献

Though sexual maturation may begin at around one year of age, first successful reproduction of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is likely to be later, and it is generally recommended that animals not be mated before 1.5 years of age. The average gestation period is estimated to be 143 to 144 days. A crown-rump length measurement taken by use of ultrasonography during the linear, rapid, prenatal growth phase (between approx. days 60 and 95) can be compared against standard growth curves to estimate delivery date to within 3 to 4 days, on average. Marmosets produce more young per delivery than does any other anthropoid primate, and have more variation in litter size. Many long-established colonies report that triplets are the most common litter size, and there is documented association between higher maternal body weight and higher ovulation numbers. Higher litter sizes generally do not generate higher numbers of viable young. Marmosets are unusual among primates in having a postpartum ovulation that typically results in conception and successful delivery; reported median inter-birth intervals range from 154 to 162 days. However, pregnancy losses are quite common; one study of a large breeding colony indicated 50 percent loss between conception and term delivery. The average life span for breeding females is around six years; the range of reported average lifetime number of litters for a breeding pair is 3.45 to 4.0. Our purpose is to provide an overview of reproduction in the common marmoset, including basic reproductive life history, lactation and weaning, social housing requirements, and common problems encountered in the captive breeding of this species. A brief comparison between marmoset and tamarin reproduction also will be provided.  相似文献

Ultrasonography was used in six saddle back tamarin females (Saguinus fuscicollis) to diagnose pregnancy, monitor the patterns of uterine growth and embryonic/foetal development and examine the incidence loss of single embryos/foetuses. Pregnancy was reliably diagnosed 17 days after conception, 10 days earlier than by plasma progesterone measurement. The patterns of uterine and embryonic/foetal growth paralleled those reported for the common marmoset, including a delay in embryonic development. The results support the hypothesis of retardation of organogenesis in most callitrichid species. Individual embryos could be reliably identified from day 50 of pregnancy; a loss of single embryos/foetuses after this stage did not occur. All pregnancies were carried to term, resulting in five times twins and one singleton. The smaller litter size compared to the common marmoset may be due to loss of single embryos at earlier stages of pregnancy or to a lower ovulation rate.  相似文献
