In this article syncretic patterning in the present indicative paradigm of the verb kloppen (‘to knock’) is described for 355 Dutch dialects taken from the morphological atlas of Dutch dialects (Van den Berg 2003). Following Baerman et al. (2005, The syntax-morphology interface. A study of syncretism. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press), I distinguish syncretisms driven by (universal) feature structure and language specific sources of syncretism. I present independent evidence for the role of phonology, pragmatics and amplification in the formation of syncretic patterns of Dutch. The benefit of the study of the interaction between language specific routes to syncretism and feature structure is threefold. We know language specific routes to syncretism can obscure feature structure. By distinguishing the different routes to syncretism we canalsorevealthe strength of feature structure. Secondly, distinguishing sources of syncretisms enables us to understand similarities and differences in the cross-linguistic patterning of syncretisms. Thirdly, we can link typological data to language acquisition patterns.  相似文献

The characterization of genetic divergence and relationships of a set of germplasm is essential for its efficient applications in crop breeding and understanding of the origin/evolution of crop varieties from a given geographical region. As the largest rice producing country in Europe, Italy holds rice germplasm with abundant genetic diversity. Although Italian rice varieties and the traditional ones in particular have played important roles in rice production and breeding, knowledge concerning the origin and evolution of Italian traditional varieties is still limited. To solve the puzzle of Italian rice origin, we characterized genetic divergence and relationships of 348 rice varieties from Italy and Asia based on the polymorphisms of microsatellite fingerprints. We also included common wild rice O. rufipogon as a reference in the characterization. Results indicated relatively rich genetic diversity (H e = 0.63-0.65) in Italian rice varieties. Further analyses revealed a close genetic relationship of the Italian traditional varieties with those from northern China, which provides strong genetic evidence for tracing the possible origin of early established rice varieties in Italy. These findings have significant implications for the rice breeding programs, in which appropriate germplasm can be selected from a given region and utilized for transferring unique genetic traits based on its genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships.  相似文献

Biological invasions are among key factors of ecological changes, and social insects appear as highly successful invasive animals. Subterranean termites of the holarctic genus Reticulitermes are present in Europe with six native and one invasive (the nearctic R. flavipes) species. The species R. urbis shows a disjunct distribution in the Western Balkans, Eastern Italy and Southern France. Previous molecular and population genetics data suggested that the taxon originated from the Balkans, and that Italian and French populations are invasive, but it is still unknown how many introduction events occurred and from which Balkan source populations. To address these questions, a population genetics analysis was performed on a larger sampling than previous studies, using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase II and 6 microsatellite markers on 47 colonies collected across the whole distribution area. Mitochondrial analysis confirmed the presence of two major lineages where colonies from Balkans, Italy, and France intermingle. Similarly, microsatellite loci analysis indicated the presence of two genetic clusters, though not corresponding to the two mitochondrial clades, each including colonies from the three sampled areas and with individuals showing mixed cluster membership. Overall, French and Italian populations showed indications of bottleneck (reduced genetic diversity and change of allele frequencies) and do not appear genetically differentiated from the Balkan population. Results presented here support a history of multiple introductions in Italy and France, in a scenario consistent with continuous exchanges between native and invasive areas, as expected along human trades routes.  相似文献

In taking an integrated ethnopedological approach, this study aims to investigate the meaning of the distribution of the toponyms used in traditional and recent cartography of Sardinia (southern Italy). It is particularly, but not only, focused on those related to soil resources. Sardinia is particularly interesting in this respect, as its unique history, geography, and linguistic position makes it one of the Italian and Mediterranean regions with the greatest number of toponyms. This research investigated the toponyms belonging to an important sub-region of Sardinia, called Ogliastra (central-eastern Sardinia). The research was conducted through the following integrated approach: i) toponymy research and collection from different sources; ii) database creation and translation of toponyms from the Sardinian language (SL); iii) categorization of toponyms; and iv) graphical, statistical, and cartographic data processing. Distribution and diversity of toponyms were assessed using the compiled database, coupled with a geographical information system (GIS). Of around 7700 toponyms collected, 79% had already been reported in SL, while just 21% were in Italian. Of the toponyms in SL, 77% are of known meaning and 54% of these toponyms were characterized by a meaning directly and/or indirectly connected to specific environmental features. On the whole, morphology would appear to be the primary environmental factor able to explain the complex, articulated presence, distribution, and typology of the investigated toponyms. A least squares regression analysis of pedodiversity vs. topodiversity shows a very closed distribution, with an impressive high correlation index (R2 = 0.824). The principal factor analysis (PFA) shows that such a connection may be morphologically based, thereby confirming that pedodiversity and topodiversity are strongly linked each other. Overall, the research shows that an integrated ethnopedological approach, combining indigenous and scientific knowledge may be of great interest in order to mitigate the impressive phenomena of the indigenous knowledge lost.  相似文献

There are approximately 7000 languages spoken in the world today. This diversity reflects the legacy of thousands of years of cultural evolution. How far back we can trace this history depends largely on the rate at which the different components of language evolve. Rates of lexical evolution are widely thought to impose an upper limit of 6000–10 000 years on reliably identifying language relationships. In contrast, it has been argued that certain structural elements of language are much more stable. Just as biologists use highly conserved genes to uncover the deepest branches in the tree of life, highly stable linguistic features hold the promise of identifying deep relationships between the world''s languages. Here, we present the first global network of languages based on this typological information. We evaluate the relative evolutionary rates of both typological and lexical features in the Austronesian and Indo-European language families. The first indications are that typological features evolve at similar rates to basic vocabulary but their evolution is substantially less tree-like. Our results suggest that, while rates of vocabulary change are correlated between the two language families, the rates of evolution of typological features and structural subtypes show no consistent relationship across families.  相似文献

The focus of this paper is to discuss the relation between morphology and dialectology. On the one hand, it shows that the study of dialects offers new challenges to morphology, since dialects form an important source of morphological phenomena, and dialectal research allows us to throw light on theoretical morphological issues. On the other hand, it argues that morphological theory may provide accurate and interesting tools for the analysis of dialectal data. In addition, it shows that dialectal morphology can be profitable for typology and historical morphology, because the study of dialects may shed light on possible language structures and language change. The data to be used include examples from several Modern Greek dialects. They refer to coordinative compounding, allomorphy, a borderline case of prefixation and compounding, as well as to a contact-induced change of the morphological type of one particular dialectal system.  相似文献

Rice blast disease, caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc., is responsible for considerable damages in rice crops in Italy and in other parts of the world. This study was conducted in order to investigate the genetic structure of a P. grisea population in the Po area, the largest rice area in Italy. Rice leaves showing blast symptoms were collected in three successive years (1998–2000) and 43 P. grisea monoconidial culture samples were isolated from infected rice leaves. Fungal DNAs were obtained from mycelia. Moreover, six additional P. grisea DNA samples representative for the five characterized European lineages were also investigated. All 49 DNAs were fingerprinted using the Pot2‐based repetitive polymerase chain reaction specific for the blast pathogen. Unweighted pair‐group method with arithmetic averages cluster analysis shows the presence of three main Italian lineages. Within lineages, similarity was higher than 80%. Samples representative of the three of five known European lineages grouped within these three Italian lineages confirming the presence of three European lineages in Italy. Furthermore, cluster analysis shows the presence of two new haplotypes never found before in the Italian lineage.  相似文献

Italy is the only country in Europe with a significant land area used for rice production. In this paper, the genetic diversity of 172 national varieties and 47 foreign accessions (ITALORYZA collection) was investigated using a set of neutral markers evenly distributed throughout the 12 chromosomes. Out of the 218 alleles detected in our analysis, 17 and 29% were specific to the Italian and foreign accessions, respectively. From the neighbour-joining tree generated, six sub-groups of temperate japonica germplasm were identified. Plant height and grain type measured in the source collection were fitted to the phylogenetic tree, along with the period of variety registration. This integrated genotype–phenotype analysis revealed that specific sub-groups are characterized by uniform classes of grain type, or by similar plant size, or by period of release in the market. The whole collection was also evaluated for leaf blast resistance by inoculating the plants with three strains of Magnaporthe oryzae, representing the pathogen genetic diversity existing in Italy. Only 15 out of 172 Italian accessions (8.7%) were resistant to all three fungal strains. The correlation between genotype and leaf blast phenotype revealed that the most highly resistant Italian varieties are included in a single germplasm sub-group derived from US varieties. This study represents the starting point for carrying out detailed phenotype–genotype whole-genome association studies and identification of the genetic basis of important agronomic traits for rice cultivation in temperate climates.  相似文献

In the past century the Italian wolf has been repeatedly indicated as a distinct subspecies, Canis lupus italicus, due to its unique morphology and its distinctive mtDNA control region (CR) monomorphism. However, recent studies on wolf x dog hybridization in Italy documented the presence of a second mtDNA CR haplotype (W16), previously found only in wolves from Eastern Europe, casting doubts on the genetic uniqueness of the Italian wolves. To test whether this second haplotype belongs to the Italian wolf population, we genotyped 92 wolf DNA samples from Italy, Slovenia, Greece and Bulgaria at four mtDNA regions (control-region, ATP6, COIII and ND4 genes) and at 39 autosomal microsatellites. Results confirm the presence of two mtDNA multi-fragment haplotypes (WH14 and WH19) in the Italian wolves, distinct from all the other European wolves. Network analyses of the multi-fragment mtDNA haplotypes identified two strongly differentiated clades, with the Italian wolf WH14 and WH19 multi-fragment haplotypes rooted together. Finally, Bayesian clustering clearly assigned all the wolves sampled in Italy to the Italian population, regardless of the two different multi-fragment haplotypes. These results demonstrate that the W16 CR haplotype is part of the genetic pool of the Italian wolf population, reconfirming its distinctiveness from other European wolves. Overall, considering the presence of unique mtDNA and Y-linked haplotypes, the sharply different frequencies of genome-wide autosomal alleles and the distinct morphological features of Italian wolves, we believe that this population should be considered a distinct subspecies.  相似文献

Given its relevance as a game species, the brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) is one of the most managed and translocated mammals in Europe. In Italy, the species shows a genepool consisting of a mix of native and exotic lineages, due to translocations and introductions for hunting purposes. Some authors argued that the introduction of exotic brown hares could have caused the extinction of an endemic subspecies, L. e. meridiei Hilzheimer 1906, once present in central and northern Italy. Here we genetically characterized for the first time the brown hare population living in Pianosa island (part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park) using 13 STR loci and a fragment of the mtDNA control region. All individuals analyzed share a unique haplotype, the L. europaeus haplotype Leu2, recognized as the ancestral mitochondrial lineage corresponding to the subspecies L. e. meridiei. Furthermore, considering autosomal markers, Pianosa brown hare population and current Italian peninsular population are genetically distinct. The discovery of this ancient population in a protected area, isolated and not affected by recent translocation/restocking events, has a great relevance in conservation and confirms the current presence of the endemic subspecies L. e. meridiei in Italy.  相似文献

In this study we determined the complete sequence of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). We then compared these new sequences with orthologues of nine carnivores belonging to six families (Mustelidae, Mephitidae, Canidae, Hyaenidae, Ursidae, and Felidae). The comparative analyses identified all the conserved regions previously found in mammals. The Eurasian otter and seven other species have a single location with tandem repeats in the right domain, while the spotted hyena (Hyaenidae) and the tiger (Felidae) have repeated sequences in both the right and left domains. To assess the degree of genetic heterogeneity of the Eurasian otter in Italy we sequenced two fragments of the gene and analyzed length polymorphisms of repeated sequences and heteroplasmy in 32 specimens. The study includes 23 museum specimens collected in northern, central, and southern Italy; most of these specimens are from extinct populations, while the southern Italian samples belong to the sole extant Italian population of the Eurasian otter. The study also includes all the captive-reared animals living in the colony "Centro Lontra, Caramanico Terme" (Pescara, central Italy). The colony is maintained for reintroduction of the species. We found a low level of genetic polymorphism; a single haplotype is dominant, but our data indicate the presence in central and southern Italy of two slightly divergent haplotypes. One haplotype belongs to an extinct population, the other is present in the single extant Italian population. Analyses of length polymorphisms and heteroplasmy indicate that the autochthonous Italian samples are characterized by a distinct array of repeated sequences from captive-reared animals.  相似文献

The olive is considered one of the most important fruit crops of the Mediterranean basin where it shows a wide range of variability, with about 2,000 cultivars. Italy, with about 500 cultivars, plays a fundamental role. The ability to discriminate olive cultivars and estimate genetic variability are important factors in better management of genetic resources and in helping to understand how genetic diversity is partitioned among cultivars. The two main objectives of the present investigation were to evaluate the identity of cultivars grown in Abruzzo region, central Italy, and to study their genetic structure. We applied amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) methodology on 84 genotypes belonging to the most relevant and oldest varieties cultivated in Abruzzo and on six unknown genotypes. The information content of data was evaluated using the Marker Ratio index and the Polymorphic Index Content. Moreover, STRUCTURE software was used to investigate the genetic population structure. The analysis enabled us to clearly distinguish eight cultivars within seven clusters. Additionally, one cluster was found to have various minor cultivars and showed a relatively high level of diversity. The partitioning of genetic diversity showed that the largest amount of molecular variance was within groups. Our data suggest that both sexual and clonal propagation have played an important role in the evolution of olive cultivars. In our hypothesis, some ancestral population spread in central Italy with a relevant role of seed propagation, followed by a selection of superior clones from which more traditional varieties originated. In a few cases, hybridization should be taken into consideration to explain the diffusion of recently developed cultivars.  相似文献

The present study deals with the spectrum of intra-paradigmatic configurations that the Latin verbal infix -I/ESC- acquired in modern Romance standard and dialectal varieties. It proposes an in-depth analysis, both of the so-called ‘patterned’ and ‘non-patterned’ Romance infix-distributions: patterned Romance infix-distributions find response in parallel and recurrent stem-allomorphic conjugational alternations; non-patterned infix-distributions are morphologically unique and do not have allomorphic distributional counterparts in other, non-infixed, verbs. While patterned infix-distributions benefit from the ‘morphomic’ approach (cf. Aronoff 1994, Maiden 2003), it will be shown that ‘non-patterned’ infix-distributions can be predicted only by taking into account several (co-)conditioning forces, e.g. stress, thematicity and modality.  相似文献

This article provides general information and original data on the period of first introduction in Europe (1823–1825) and in Italy (first half of the 19th century), and on the current distribution and impacts in Italy of the invasive macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes. Two main pathways are responsible for the presence of this species in Italy: (i) introduction as an ornamental and (ii) research and use for phytoremediation. After a time lag of more than 100 years, E. crassipes has recently started invading the Italian freshwaters. A specific action plan for this species is required, including local eradication and awareness campaigns. Furthermore, regulations in the trade sector of invasive aquatic plant species need to be introduced and the possibilities for biological or integrated control evaluated.  相似文献

Genetic introgression with exotic genomes represents a major conservation concern for the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa, Phasianidae). In particular, massive releases of chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) and/or red-legged × chukar partridge hybrids for hunting purposes have cast serious doubts on the Italian present-day occurrence of wild A. rufa populations not affected by introgressive hybridization. This study investigates the genetic structure of red-legged partridges populations in two ecologically different areas in Northern Italy. Analysis of maternal mitochondrial DNA and biparental microsatellite markers excluded the presence of hybridization in a typical agricultural habitat where hunting and release of reared birds are strictly banned. By contrast, signs of chukar introgression were detected in a perifluvial habitat unusual for the red-legged partridge in Italy. The present study documents the first red-legged partridge population with no genetic evidences of recent chukar introgression presently living in Italy. We recommend that urgent conservation actions are taken to preserve the genetic integrity of this population from the risk of hybridization with farm-reared birds and to support its long-term conservation.  相似文献

The criteria for classification set down in the new system of the IUCN Red List categories were applied to national distribution areas. Application of the new criteria to national distribution areas calls for an estimate of the rate of immigration. Classification was applied to the Italian autochthonous terrestrial vertebrate species that reproduce in Italy (Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia). Species with both marine and land habitats were included, but Cetaceans were excluded. Eighty-eight species of the autochthonous species that reproduce in Italy were classified in the threatened categories at the national level. One of the main purposes of the present classification of the risk of extinction in national distribution areas is to provide the information needed to define global conservation priorities of species present on national territory. The species nationally and/or globally endangered or at lower risk were grouped into four priority classes, on the basis of their reproductive phenology on national territory and the size of temporarily present contingents. Of the 551 species present regularly or seasonally on Italian territory, 149 (27.0%) are in the initial indicative list of conservation priorities.  相似文献

In spite of the common belief of Europe as reasonably homogeneous at genetic level, advances in high-throughput genotyping technology have resolved several gradients which define different geographical areas with good precision. When Northern and Southern European groups were considered separately, there were clear genetic distinctions. Intra-country genetic differences were also evident, especially in Finland and, to a lesser extent, within other European populations. Here, we present the first analysis using the 125,799 genome-wide Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) data of 1,014 Italians with wide geographical coverage. We showed by using Principal Component analysis and model-based individual ancestry analysis, that the current population of Sardinia can be clearly differentiated genetically from mainland Italy and Sicily, and that a certain degree of genetic differentiation is detectable within the current Italian peninsula population. Pair-wise FST statistics Northern and Southern Italy amounts approximately to 0.001 between, and around 0.002 between Northern Italy and Utah residents with Northern and Western European ancestry (CEU). The Italian population also revealed a fine genetic substructure underscoring by the genomic inflation (Sardinia vs. Northern Italy = 3.040 and Northern Italy vs. CEU = 1.427), warning against confounding effects of hidden relatedness and population substructure in association studies.  相似文献
