Leaf samples were collected from 40 accessions of Chenopodium spp. and assessed for six heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr and Cd) accumulation to explore the use of Chenopodium for phytoextraction of heavy metals. The results suggest that Chenopodium spp. have the ability to accumulate large quantities of heavy metals in the leaf tissues even when they are present in low concentrations in the soil. C. quinoa is a better accumulator of Ni, Cr and Cd than the rest of the species, while C. album accessions are good copper accumulators. Bioconcentration factor for chromium ranged from 0.36 (C. album “Chandanbathua”) to 6.57 (C. quinoa Ames 13719) with 13 accessions of C. quinoa scoring above the mean value. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was recorded for Ni, Cr and Cd, which indicated a major role of additive gene action in the inheritance of these characters. Zinc showed significant positive association with iron (0.351**), nickel (0.659**), chromium (0.743**) and cadmium (0.288**). Nickel was significantly and negatively associated with copper (−0.663**), while it was positively and significantly correlated with chromium (0.682**) and cadmium (0.461**). Considering the accumulation efficiency of Chenopodium spp. with respect to heavy metals, this genus should be further explored for decontamination of metal polluted soils, with plant breeding playing an important role in evolving new plant types with higher capacity of heavy metal accumulation.  相似文献

While several recent studies have described changes in microbial communities associated with exotic plant invasion, how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities respond to exotic plant invasion is not well known, despite the salient role of this group in plant interactions. Here, we use molecular methods (terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses based on the large subunit of the rRNA gene) to examine AMF community structure in sites dominated by the invasive mycorrhizal forb, Centaurea maculosa Lam. (spotted knapweed), and in adjacent native grassland sites. Our results indicate that significant AMF community alteration occurs following C. maculosa invasion. Moreover, a significant reduction in the number of restriction fragment sizes was found for samples collected in C. maculosa-dominated areas, suggesting reduced AMF diversity. Extraradical hyphal lengths exhibited a significant, on average 24%, reduction in C. maculosa-versus native grass-dominated sites. As both AMF community composition and abundance were altered by C.maculosa invasion, these data are strongly suggestive of potential impacts on AMF-mediated ecosystem processes. Given that the composition of AMF communities has the potential to differentially influence different plant species, our results may have important implications for site restoration after weed invasion.  相似文献

Nickel hyperaccumulating plants have more than 1000 mg Ni kg–1 dry weight when grown on nickel-bearing soils. We hypothesized that Ni hyperaccumulation could serve as a chemical defense against herbivores In feeding experiments with potential insect herbivores and Ni hyperaccumulating plants, only those inseets fed leaves from plants grown on non-nickel-bearing soil survived or showed a weight gain. Among chemical parameters measured, only Ni content of plants was sufficient to explain this result. When subjected to herbivory by lepidopteran larvae, plants grown on Ni-amended soil showed greater survival and yield than plants on unamended soil. Ni hyperaccumulation may be an effective plant chemical defense against herbivores because of its high lethality, apparent low cost, and broad spectrum of toxicity.  相似文献

The responses of root aerobic respiration to hypoxia in three common Typha species were examined. Typha latifolia L., T. orientalis Presl, and T. angustifolia L. were hydroponically cultivated under both aerobic and hypoxic growth conditions to measure root oxygen consumption rates. Hypoxia significantly enhanced the root aerobic respiration capacity of the two deep-water species, T. orientalis and T. angustifolia, while it did not affect that of the shallow-water species, T. latifolia. T. angustifolia increased its root porosity and root mass ratio, while T. latifolia increased its root diameter under the hypoxic growth conditions. The relative growth rates in biomass of T. orientalis and T. angustifolia were 59 and 39% higher, respectively, under the hypoxic growth conditions than under the aerobic growth conditions. In contrast, that of T. latifolia did not differ between the two conditions. In T. orientalis and T. angustifolia, enhanced root aerobic respiration rates under the hypoxic growth conditions would have increased the nutrient uptake, and thus higher relative growth rates were obtained. For the deep-water species, T. orientalis and T. angustifolia, the root aerobic respiration capacity was enhanced, probably in order to maintain the generation of respiratory energy under hypoxia.  相似文献

Serpentine soils, which contain relatively high concentrations of nickel and some other metals, are the preferred substrate for some plants, especially those that accumulate Ni in their tissues. In temperate regions more Ni-hyperaccumulator plants are found in Alyssum than in any other genus. In this study, serpentine soils of two areas (Marivan and Dizaj) in the west/northwest of Iran and also perennial Alyssum plants growing on these soils were analyzed for Ni and some other metals. The highest concentrations of total metals in the soils of these areas for Ni, Cr, Co and Mn were 1,350, 265, 94 and 1,150 μg g−1, respectively, while concentrations of Fe, Mg and Ca reached 3.55%, 16.8% and 0.585% respectively. The concentration of exchangeable Ni in these soils is up to 4.5 μg g−1. In this study two Alyssum species, A. inflatum and A. longistylum, have been collected from Marivan and Dizaj, respectively. Analysis of leaf dry matter shows that they can contain up to 3,700 and 8,100 μg Ni g−1, respectively. This is the first time that such high Ni concentrations have been found in these species. The concentrations of other metals determined in these species were in the normal range for serpentine plants, except for Ca, which was higher, up to 5.3% and 3.5%, respectively  相似文献

Many studies have shown that soil disturbance facilitates establishment of invasive, non-native plant species, and a number of mechanisms have been isolated that contribute to the process. To our knowledge no studies have isolated the role of altered soil compaction, a likely correlate of many types of soil disturbance, in facilitating invasion. To address this, we measured the response of seeded non-native and native plant species to four levels of soil compaction in mesocosms placed in an abandoned agricultural field in the Methow Valley, Washington, USA. Soil compaction levels reflected the range of resistance to penetration (0.1–3.0 kg cm−2) measured on disturbed soils throughout the study system prior to the experiment. Percent cover of non-native species, namely Bromus tectorum and Centaurea diffusa, decreased by 34% from the least to the most compacted treatments, whereas percent cover of native species, mostly Pseudoroegneria spicata and Lupinus spp., did not respond to compaction treatments. Experimental results were supported by a survey of soil penetration resistance and percent cover by species in 18 abandoned agricultural fields. Percent cover of B. tectorum was negatively related to soil compaction levels, whereas none of the native species showed any response to soil compaction. These results highlight a potentially important, though overlooked, aspect of soil disturbance that may contribute to subsequent non-native plant establishment.  相似文献

A phytoene synthase gene SePSY was isolated from euhalophyte Salicornia europaea L. The 1655 bp full-length SePSY has an open reading frame of 1257 bp and encodes a 419-amino acid protein. The overexpression of SePSY enhanced the growth of transgenic Arabidopsis. When the plants were exposed to 100 mM NaCl, the photosynthesis rate and photosystem II activity (Fv/Fm) increased from 92% to 132% and from 9.3% to 16.6% in the transgenic lines than in the wild-type, respectively. The transgenics displayed higher activities of SOD and POD and lower contents of H(2)O(2) and MDA than the WT. In conclusion, the transgenic lines showed higher tolerance to salt stress than WT plants by increased photosynthesis efficiency and antioxidative capacity. This is the first report about improving the salt tolerance by genetic manipulation of carotenoid biosynthesis.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of Panolis flammea and Bupalus piniarius were reared in the laboratory on needles of Scots pine affected by industrial air pollutants in Finland. Needles were collected at different distances from a distinctive source of emission along two 9-km-long transects, and from independent control plots. The elemental composition of the needles used as larval food was analysed. Pupal weight, length and width were negatively correlated wiht the distance from the source of emission. The elemental composition of the pine needles explained 24–53% of the variation in pupal weight. Most of the explained variation was assoicated with the concentration of heavy meals in the pine needles.  相似文献

Uncultivated plants growing on disturbed sites may be useful for assessing the bioavailability of some metals in soils, and thus the potential for metal mobilization up the terrestrial food chain, an important element in ecological risk assessment. A planted chicory cultivar (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi.) and the uncultivated plants horseweed (Canada fleabane) (Erigeron canadensis L.) and dogfennel (Eupatorium capillifolium (Lam.) Small) were evaluated for their ability to act as index plant species for soil Cd, Cr, Ni, and V at two field sites where these metals had been applied five yr previously to two highly weathered sandy Ultisols. Soil Cd was available to all analyzed plant tissues of all three plant species at both sites, particularly on the sandier Blanton soil. Chicory was an effective index plant for Cd on the finer textured Orangeburg soil but functioned as an indicator plant (toxicity symptoms were observed) on the sandier Blanton soil. Horseweed and dogfennel were effective index plants for Cd in both contaminated soils. Soil Cr, Ni, and V were less bioavailable than soil Cd and plant metal uptake was more sensitive to residual soil Cr, Ni, and V than was soil extraction with double acid. Horseweed and chicory may have potential as index plants for soil Cr. Chicory may have potential as a Ni index plant. Chicory and dogfennel may have potential as V index plants.  相似文献

New experimental evidence from controlledglasshouse studies was used to testprevious empirical field observations aboutthe interactions of hydrological dynamicswith individual plant species in wetlandhabitats. Manipulation of water levels, andthe presence/ absence of competitorspecies, produced significant morphologicalresponses (e.g. resource allocation toabove- and below-ground structures; plantheight; leaf size; tiller production) inmature individuals of five freshwaterwetland plant species characteristic ofBritish northern poor-fen habitats. Theseresponses provide evidence for potentialadvantages in survival and ability tospread vegetatively. The data also providenew insight into factors controlling thedistribution of wetland plants alonggradients of water table level, in thepresence or absence of competing species.Although there were variations betweenspecies, the effects of competition were,in general, less than those attributable tohydrological regime.  相似文献

Optimum growth conditions and inoculation regimes were determined for severalFrankia strains isolated from both Alnus and Casuarina host plants. Growth conditions were estabilished that allowed a reduction in generation time to less than 15 hours for certain Alnus derivedFrankia. Differences in plant growth response were observed with differing inoculum levels and soil mixtures. Elite strains of Alnus derivedFrankia were isolated that elicited similar growth reponses in allAlnus species tested; however, differences were observed betweenFrankia strains and plant growth response of variousCasuarina species tested.  相似文献

Brassica rapa L. is an important vegetable crop in eastern Asia. The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic variation in leaf Zn, Fe and Mn accumulation, Zn toxicity tolerance and Zn efficiency in B. rapa. In total 188 accessions were screened for their Zn-related characteristics in hydroponic culture. In experiment 1, mineral assays on 111 accessions grown under sufficient Zn supply (2 μM ZnSO4) revealed a variation range of 23.2–155.9 μg g−1 dry weight (d. wt.) for Zn, 60.3–350.1 μg g−1 d. wt. for Fe and 20.9–53.3 μg g−1 d. wt. for the Mn concentration in shoot. The investigation of tolerance to excessive Zn (800 μM ZnSO4) on 158 accessions, by using visual toxicity symptom parameters (TSPs), identified different levels of tolerance in B. rapa. In experiment 2, a selected sub-set of accessions from experiment 1 was characterized in more detail for their mineral accumulation and tolerance to excessive Zn supply (100 μM and 300 μM ZnSO4). In this experiment Zn tolerance (ZT) determined by relative root or shoot dry biomass varied about 2-fold. The same six accessions were also examined for Zn efficiency, determined as relative growth under 0 μM ZnSO4 compared to 2 μM ZnSO4. Zn efficiency varied 1.8-fold based on shoot dry biomass and 2.6-fold variation based on root dry biomass. Zn accumulation was strongly correlated with Mn and Fe accumulation both under sufficient and deficient Zn supply. In conclusion, there is substantial variation for Zn accumulation, Zn toxicity tolerance and Zn efficiency in Brassica rapa L., which would allow selective breeding for these traits.  相似文献

Summary Cadmium and zinc uptake parameters were determined for intact corn (Zea mays L.) seedlings grown for 15 and 22 in nutrient solutions containing levels of Cd and Zn that were similar to those found in soil solutions. Uptake of both elements was assumed to follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Calculations were based on the concentrations of free ionic Cd (Cd2+) and Zn (Zn2+) rather than the total solution concentration. Rates of Zn uptake were measured by determining depletion of Zn for periods of up to 30 h from solutions containing initial concentrations of 1.5 and 10μmol Zn 1−1. Depletion curves suggested that Zn uptake characteristics were similar at both levels of Zn in solution. The Imax for Zn uptake decreased from 550 to 400 pmol m−2 root surface s−1 between 16 and 22 d of growth while Km decreased from 2.2 to 1.5 μmol Zn2+ 1−1. Cadmium uptake parameters were measured by controlling Cd2+ activities in nutrient solution betwen 6.3 to 164 nmol l−1 by continuous circulation of nutrient solution through a mixed-resin system. Imax for Cd uptake was 400 pmol m−2 root surface s−1 at 15 and 22 d of growth. The magnitude of Km increased from 30 to 100 nmol Cd2+ 1−1 during this time period. The Km value suggests that corn is efficient for Cd uptake. The results of these uptake studies are consistent with the observed uptake of Zn and Cd by corn seedlings in soils.  相似文献

The optimum conditions for biosorption and bioaccumulation of lead and nickel were investigated by using a tolerant bacterial strain isolated from El-Malah canal, Assiut, Egypt, and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa ASU 6a. The experimental adsorption data were fitted towards the models postulated by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. The binding capacity by living cells is significantly lower than that of dead cells. The maximum biosorption capacities for lead and nickel obtained by using non-living cells and living cells were 123, 113.6 and 79, 70 mg/g, respectively. The biosorptive mechanism was confirmed by IR analysis and from the identification nature of acidic and basic sites. Moreover, the postulated mechanism was found to depend mainly on ionic interaction and complex formation.  相似文献

To examine how soil phosphorus status affects nitrogen fixation by the Casuarinaceae —Frankia symbiosis,Casuarina equisetifolia and two species ofAllocasuarina (A. torulosa andA. littoralis) inoculated or fertilized with KNO3 were grown in pots in an acid soil at 4 soil phosphate levels. InoculatedC. equisetifolia nodulated well by 12 weeks after planting and the numbers and weight of nodules increased markedly with phosphorus addition. Growth ofC. equisetifolia dependent on symbiotically fixed nitrogen was more sensitive to low levels of phosphorus (30 mg kg–1 soil) than was growth of seedings supplied with combined nitrogen; at higher levels of phosphorus, the growth response curves were similar for both nitrogen fertilized and inoculated plants. The interaction between phosphorus and nitrogen treatments (inoculated and nitrogen fertilized) demonstrated that there was a greater requirement of phosphorus for symbiotic nitrogen fixation than for plant growth when soil phosphorus was low.WithAllocasuarina species, large plant to plant variation in nodulation occurred both within pots and between replicates. This result suggests genetic variation in nodulation withinAllocasuarina species. Nodulation ofAllocasuarina species did not start until 16 weeks after planting and no growth response due toFrankia inoculation was obtained at the time of harvest. Addition of nitrogen starter is suggested to boost plant growth before the establishment of the symbiosis. Growth ofAllocasuarina species fertilized with nitrogen responded to increasing levels of phosphorus up to 90 mg P/kg soil after which it declined by 69% forA. littoralis. The decrease in shoot weight ofA. littoralis, A. torulosa, C. equisetifolia andC. cunninghamiana at high phosphorus was confirmed in a sand culture experiment, and may be atributable to phosphorus toxicity.  相似文献

Summary Expiants of five plant species (Allium cepa, Antirrhinum majus, Brassica campestris. Glycine max, and Nicotiana tabacum) were co-cultivated with three Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains under different conditions to assess the effects of acetosyringone and medium pH on strain virulence. Tumours were incited on all dicotyledonous species by strains N2/73 and A281. The presence of acetosyringone during co-cultivation generally enhanced the virulence of these strains, most markedly N2/73 on A. majus and G. max, and A281 on G. max. Strain Ach5 was virulent only on N. tabacum in the absence of acetosyringone, which, when present, extended the host range to include A. majus. There was evidence to suggest that acetosyringone may suppress virulence in some strain/plant species interactions. Virulence was affected in some cases by medium pH, but there was no general effect across plant species.Abbreviations T-DNA DNA transferred to plant cells by Agrobacterium - BAP benzyl aminopurine - MS medium Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium  相似文献

The effects of nickel were studied in two serpentine species with different metal tolerance strategies:Silene italica L., which limits nickel uptake and translocation, andAlyssum bertolonii Desv., a serpentine endemic, which accumulates nickel mostly in the leaves. InS. italica, nickel 7.5 μM inhibited root growth and depressed mitotic activity in root tips. Peroxidase activity and phenol concentration both in roots and shoots were increased; under the same conditions nickel did not produce any relevant effect onA. bertolonii. InS. italica an adequate calcium concentration (25 mM) was able to reverse the effects of nickel on root growth and metabolism. InA. bertolonii the same calcium concentration reduced root growth, confirming this species adaptation also to low calcium concentrations, typical of serpentines.  相似文献

Summary The perennial bunchgrassEhrharta calycina was grown with and without V.A.M. fungal infection (Glomus fasciculatum) in a sandy loam exposed to a range of acidic and heavy metal depositions. Heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Co) were applied in simulated rain (pH 3.0, 4.0, and 5.6) at deposition rates approximating those observed to result from smelter efluents. Metal concentrations in the roots and shoots of mycorrhizal plants were greater than those of non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal enhancement of plant metal uptake increased with greater acidity and higher heavy metal content of treatment. The growth of mycorrhizal plants was reduced compared to non-mycorrhizal plants when metal depostion was combined with simulated acid rain. We propose that mycorrhizal enhancement of heavy metal uptake caused reduced growth in plants exposed to acidic and heavy metal depositions.  相似文献

The response of three chydorid species to temperature, pH and food   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The responses of three chydorid species, Chydorus sphaericus(O.F. Müller), Alona affinis (Leydig) and Alonopsis elongata (Sars) to temperature, pH and food type were examined. Egg development time of all species decreased with increasing temperature, although the degree of change was different for each species. C. sphaericus had the fastest development time at all temperatures, and A. elongata the slowest. pH also affected the egg development time of each species differently. A. elongata failed to reproduce at low and medium pH, the egg development time of C. sphaericus was fastest at high pH while that of A. affinis was fastest at low pH. Food type was found to have significant effects on the population growth of individual species. C. sphaericus populations grew equally well in all three food types provided, and grew more than the other two species when fed on an algae culture, and filtered pond water. A. affinisand A. elongata populations grew best when fed on a detritus food source. The responses of each species to the different variables tested are discussed in relation to field observations of their distribution and abundance.  相似文献

It is believed that abiotic, rather than biotic, factors are ofparamount importance to the performance of plants in alpine and arctichabitats. This study examines how Salix lapponum affects 15associated species by comparing individual growth and reproductive performanceof adult plants growing inside and outside shrub canopies. The study alsoincludes experimental removal of Salix lapponum shrubs, andmeasurements of shoot density of five species inside and outside intactcanopies. Mean above-ground plant weight of nine species was significantlyhigher inside canopies compared to outside. Mean leaf number inside canopieswassignificantly higher for two species, and total seed number was significantlyhigher inside for one species. Mean leaf number was significantly lower insidecanopies compared to outside for one species. Mean seed weight wassignificantlylower inside canopies for one species. Removal of Salixlapponum shrubs increased bulbil weight of Bistortavivipara and seed number and plant weight of Euphrasiafrigida. These results suggest that canopy removal relaxedcompetition. Shoot density was substantially higher outside canopies comparedtoinside for four species and slightly higher outside for one species. Soilmoisture, soil organic content, soil pH, and temperature inside canopies werenot significantly different from outside, whereas photosynthetically activeradiation (PAR) was markedly reduced inside canopies. Increased growth insidecanopies is likely a compensatory mechanism to decreased PAR, which enableplants inside canopies to achieve reproductive outputs that equals those onoutside plants. The lower plant density inside canopies is probably caused byreduced germination and establishment possibilities there, due to reduced PARand higher litter accumulation.  相似文献
