This study analyzed the relationship between breathing pattern and arm coordination symmetry in 11 expert male swimmers who performed the front crawl at their 100-m race pace using seven randomized breathing patterns. Two indexes of coordination (IdCP and IdCNP) and a symmetry index (SI) based on the difference of IdCP - IdCNP were calculated. IdCP calculated the lag time between the beginning of arm propulsion on the nonpreferential breathing side and the end of arm propulsion on the preferential breathing side; IdCNP did the converse. The IdCP and IdCNP comparisons and the SI showed coordination asymmetries among the seven breathing patterns. Specifically, breathing to the preferential side led to an asymmetry, in contrast to the other breathing patterns, and the asymmetry was even greater when the swimmer breathed to his nonpreferential side. These findings highlight the effect of breathing laterality in that coordination was symmetric in patterns with breathing that was bilateral, axed (as in breathing with a frontal snorkel), or removed (as in apnea). One practical application is that arm coordination asymmetry can be prevented or reduced by using breathing patterns that balance the coordination.  相似文献

Many organs in vertebrates are left-right asymmetrical located. For example, liver is at the right side and stomach is at the left side in human. Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) signaling is important for left-right asymmetry. To investigate the roles of Fgfr2 signaling in zebrafish left-right asymmetry, we used splicing blocking morpholinos to specifically block the splicing of fgfr2b and fgfr2c variants, respectively. We found that the relative position of the liver and the pancreas were disrupted in fgfr2c morphants. Furthermore, the left-right asymmetry of the heart became random. Expression pattern of the laterality controlling genes, spaw and pitx2c, also became random in the morphants. Furthermore, lefty1 was not expressed in the posterior notochord, indicating that the molecular midline barrier had been disrupted. It was also not expressed in the brain diencephalon. Kupffer's vesicle (KV) size became smaller in fgfr2c morphants. Furthermore, KV cilia were shorter in fgfr2c morphants. We conclude that the fgfr2c isoform plays an important role in the left-right asymmetry during zebrafish development.  相似文献

There is evidence that brain lateralization underlying hemispheric specialization can be observed also at biochemical level. However, hemispheric differences in nitric oxide mediator system have not yet been evaluated. The hippocampus and planum temporale are highly asymmetrical regions but the degree of their laterality is altered in demented or psychotic people. In the study, l-glutamate/l-arginine/l-citrulline concentrations, nitric oxide synthase activities/expressions and nitrites/nitrates levels were estimated in autoptic hippocampi. Right/left laterality in endothelial synthase activity and in nitrites/nitrates was observed in controls. Lateral changes were estimated in patients with Alzheimer disease (a marked increase in activities of constitutive synthases and in expression of inducible enzyme in the left side) and schizophrenia (an increase in activities of all enzymes especially in the right side). Significant shifts from positive to negative correlations were found between laterality of some components of nitric oxide pathway and of planum temporale volumetry under pathological conditions. The hippocampal nitric oxide system appears to be globally right/left lateralized, especially via actions of highly asymmetrical endothelial synthase. The results suggest a specific involvement of all synthases in the development of selected diseases and show that lateral analyses are of sufficient sensitivity to reveal subtle links. The volumetric asymmetry of the planum temporale as a marker of handedness is not probably simply linked to brain laterality at biochemical level but reflects alterations due to pathological processes.  相似文献

The metal-chelated 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) has made a significant impact on the field of diagnostic imaging. This imaging mechanism is largely dependent on the four side arm functionalities around the DOTA scaffold. We previously demonstrated the effect of peptoid residue modification on these DOTA side arms, thereby conferring diverse physiochemical properties to the imaging mechanism. We generated two on-bead Eu(III)-DOTA libraries with three side arm modifications, where the remaining arm was used to attach DOTA onto the resin. However, having an on-bead fully symmetric tetra-substituted DOTA synthesis route can greatly improve the fields of diagnostic, therapeutic, and theragnostic agent development. Here, we report an efficient method for the synthesis of symmetric tetra-substituted DOTA derivatives by modification with peptoid moieties on all four arms using a conceptually unique solid-phase synthesis approach. Resins with different loading capacities were examined for synthesis feasibility and high loading resins were most effective. The reaction yields were also studied by varying the number of peptoid residues and incorporating different linkers. We have tested the binding ability of the tetra-substituted derivative with its previously tested tri-substituted analogs as model applications. Our protocol provides an efficient and facile on-bead synthesis route for fully symmetric tetra-substituted DOTA derivatizations.  相似文献

Cerebral lateralization is a widespread trait among animals, is often manifested as side biases in behaviour (laterality) and has been suggested to provide fitness benefits. Here we examined the influence of laterality on the organisation of fish schools using rainbowfish (Melanotaenia spp) as model species. The pattern and strength of laterality for each individual was determined by examining eye preferences whilst examining their reflection in a mirror. Schools of four fish of known laterality were then created and the preferred position for each fish within the school was repeatedly observed in a flume. Fish which showed right eye preferences in the mirror test preferentially adopted a position on the left side of the school. Conversely, fish that showed left eye preferences in the mirror test or where non-lateralised preferentially adopted a position slightly to the right side of the school. However, this general pattern varied depending on the species and sex of the school. Our results strongly implicate individual laterality in the geometry of school formation.  相似文献

This study analyzed the relationship between mechanical force production and spatial arm position of the swimming movement for each side of the swimmer. Eight internationally recognized male swimmers performed fix positioned arm only swimming with a dynamometer synchronized with underwater cameras. The upper arm positions (α in side, β in frontal view) and the elbow angles (γ in 3D) were determined at the moment where the force production reached the peak (Fmax) and the maximal values of rate of force development (RFDmax). RFDmax and α values showed significant differences between the sides (P<0.05). To show the motion integration structure of the performance, Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) was employed separately for both sides. For the criterion variable, the impulse of force (ImpF50%) was calculated. The defined parameters as the mechanical and spatial predictor system were used for the model. The results of the MRA showed that the predictor system yielded the model structure of the variables that explain the criterion variables for ImpF50% by the dominant (P=0.007) and by the nondominant side (P=0.001), respectively. The alternate contribution of the variables to the models can objectively express the performance difference between the two sides of the swimmer.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of horses (Equus caballus) to detour around symmetric and asymmetric obstacles. Ten female Italian saddle horses were each used in three detour tasks. In the first task, the ability to detour around a symmetrical obstacle was evaluated; in the second and third tasks subjects were required to perform a detour around an asymmetrical obstacle with two different degrees of asymmetry. The direction chosen to move around the obstacle and time required to make the detour were recorded. The results suggest that horses have the spatial abilities required to perform detour tasks with both symmetric and asymmetric obstacles. The strategy used to perform the task varied between subjects. For five horses, lateralized behaviour was observed when detouring the obstacle; this was consistently in one direction (three on the left and two on the right). For these horses, no evidence of spatial learning or reasoning was found. The other five horses did not solve this task in a lateralized manner, and a trend towards decreasing lateralization was observed as asymmetry, and hence task difficulty, increased. These non-lateralized horses may have higher spatial reasoning abilities.  相似文献

Background

Normal aging significantly influences motor and cognitive performance. Little is known about age-related changes in action simulation. Here, we investigated the influence of aging on implicit motor imagery.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Twenty young (mean age: 23.9±2.8 years) and nineteen elderly (mean age: 78.3±4.5 years) subjects, all right-handed, were required to determine the laterality of hands presented in various positions. To do so, they mentally rotated their hands to match them with the hand-stimuli. We showed that: (1) elderly subjects were affected in their ability to implicitly simulate movements of the upper limbs, especially those requiring the largest amplitude of displacement and/or with strong biomechanical constraints; (2) this decline was greater for movements of the non-dominant arm than of the dominant arm.

Conclusions/Significance

These results extend recent findings showing age-related alterations of the explicit side of motor imagery. They suggest that a general decline in action simulation occurs with normal aging, in particular for the non-dominant side of the body.  相似文献

Despite recent progress in defining the ciliome, the genetic basis for many cases of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) remains elusive. We evaluated five children from two unrelated, consanguineous Palestinian families who had PCD with typical clinical features, reduced nasal nitric oxide concentrations, and absent dynein arms. Linkage analyses revealed a single common homozygous region on chromosome 8 and one candidate was conserved in organisms with motile cilia. Sequencing revealed a single novel mutation in LRRC6 (Leucine-rich repeat containing protein 6) that fit the model of autosomal recessive genetic transmission, leading to a change of a highly conserved amino acid from aspartic acid to histidine (Asp146His). LRRC6 was localized to the cytoplasm and was up-regulated during ciliogenesis in human airway epithelial cells in a Foxj1-dependent fashion. Nasal epithelial cells isolated from affected individuals and shRNA-mediated silencing in human airway epithelial cells, showed reduced LRRC6 expression, absent dynein arms, and slowed cilia beat frequency. Dynein arm proteins were either absent or mislocalized to the cytoplasm in airway epithelial cells from a primary ciliary dyskinesia subject. These findings suggest that LRRC6 plays a role in dynein arm assembly or trafficking and when mutated leads to primary ciliary dyskinesia with laterality defects.  相似文献

Tactile detection and two-point discrimination tests are commonly used in neurological examinations. However, questions remain about the influence of both body and patient characteristics on test thresholds. The left side of the body has sometimes been reported more tactilely sensitive than the right, and females are said to be more sensitive than males. We measured tactile detection and two-point discrimination thresholds on the finger, palm, and forehead of a large sample of young adults (N=171), examining laterality and sex differences, and the effects of body surface area (BSA) and body fat ratio (BFR). In tactile detection, there were no effects of laterality, BSA, or BFR, although females had lower thresholds than males. In two-point discrimination, there was an effect of laterality, with lower thresholds on the left side. This probably reflects hemispheric spatial processing differences. A significant BFR effect implies that subcutaneous fat affects skin deformation, but there were no effects of sex or BSA. The two-point discrimination findings differ in several respects from recent findings using grating orientation discriminations. A small positive correlation between the tasks, falling far short of test-retest reliabilities, indicates that they use largely disjoint but partially overlapping processes.  相似文献

Active phototropic bending of non-elongating and radially growing portion of stems (woody stems) has not been previously documented, whereas negative gravitropic bending is well known. We found phototropic bending in woody stems and searched for the underlying mechanism. We inclined 1-year-old Quercus crispula Blume seedlings and unilaterally illuminated them from a horizontal direction perpendicular to ('normal' illumination) or parallel to ('parallel' illumination) the inclination azimuth. With normal illumination, active phototropic bending and xylem formation could be evaluated separately from the negative gravitropic response and vertical deflection resulting from the weight of the seedlings. One-year-old stems with normal illumination bent significantly, with asymmetrical xylem formation towards the illuminated upper surface and side of the stem, whereas those with parallel illumination showed non-significant lateral bending, with asymmetrical xylem formation only on the upper side. A mechanical model was built on the assumption that a bending moment resulted from the asymmetrical xylem formation during phototropic bending of the woody stems. The model fitted the relationship between the observed spatial distributions of the xylem and the observed lateral bending, and thus supported the hypothesis that phototropic bending of woody stems results from asymmetrical xylem formation, as such occurs during gravitropism.  相似文献

Entries of and time spent in a novel Y-maze arm that had changed from white (during acquisition trials) to black (during retention trials) were investigated in male and female Long-Evans hooded rats after the apparatus had been horizontally rotated through 180 degrees or left undisturbed. Maze rotation reduced responsiveness to this arm in males but not in females. When each arm was associated with a different set of visual cues, males significantly chose the novel arm only in the presence of intra- and extra-maze cues either alone or in combination. Females significantly selected the novel arm only in the absence of either type of cue, and in the presence of intra-maze cues alone. However, when the duration of acquisition trials was increased from 6 to 12min, females also selected the novel arm in the presence of both intra- and extra-maze cues. It was concluded that, while female rats appeared able to use egocentric (or response-related) cues for locating the novel arm, males were more dependent on allocentric (or place-related) cues following shorter acquisition trials. Because of the importance of such cues, it seemed that the task of recognizing which maze arm had changed in brightness defined the test as one of spatial memory.  相似文献

Lesions to the hippocampal system in rats result in a profound impairment of place or locale spatial learning although other learning strategies remain unaltered. The main objective of the present study was to investigate whether the spatial knowledge preserved in the hippocampal animals can be expressed flexibly under conditions different from those of the acquisition period. Rats with neurotoxic lesions to the dorsal hippocampus and sham-operated subjects were trained to reach the goal arm in a four-arm plus-shaped maze using a constant starting arm. During the training a transparent plexiglas barrier divided the maze in two equal halves in such a way that the animals could only travel from the starting arm to the goal arm, not having access to the remaining 50% of the maze. After seven days of training, a transfer test was used in which the starting arms were the two arms from which the animals had not started during the training phase. Results indicated that the lesioned rats made significantly more errors than the control subjects. But the most interesting results revealed that the kind of error made by the lesioned animals was congruent with the turn that they had to make during the acquisition phase in order to access the goal arm (reinforced). These results suggest that when the hippocampus is damaged a preserved highly inflexible egocentric strategy is employed to solve the spatial problem.  相似文献

Several methods have been developed recently for the analysis of the spatial motion of the scapula and the arm, whereby the spatial position of shoulder bones is determined in static conditions by interrupting motion. The authors have developed a 3D motion analysis method recording scapular motion in progress with appropriate accuracy in the course of arm movements of various degrees. The objective of this study is to explore the applicability of the method developed, as well as to compare it with and verify it by other methods developed earlier. The position and displacements of shoulder bones were determined on 30 shoulders of 15 healthy people. The newly developed measurement method is based on the mechanical basic principle stating that the position and motion of a rigid body -- in this case, the bones (segments) forming the shoulder joint -- can be calculated at any moment from the spatial coordinates of three points of a segment and any changes thereof in the course of motion. Ultrasound-based triplets providing the three points (fundamental points) by a segment as required for measurement were fixed on the sternum (modeling the trunk), the clavicle, the acromion (modeling the scapula), the upper arm, and the lower arm. The position of the sixteen anatomical points involved in the study were determined by an ultrasound-based pointer in the local coordinate system specified by the fundamental points before starting measurements. The ZEBRIS ultrasound-based motion analysis system was used for measuring the spatial coordinates of triplets in the course of continuous motion. The spatial coordinates of the designated anatomical points can be calculated by the method of triangulation. The method was calibrated by a ZEBRIS mapping (3DCAD) software commercially available, and the measurement error rate of the method was determined by statistical calculations. On the basis of calibration and error calculations it could be established that the accuracy and the reproducibility of the method were appropriate, in accordance with the limit values to be found in the literature.  相似文献

Five experiments were conducted with Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) to investigate how choices in a T-maze were affected by parameters of a social reward (aggression display to another male): presence or absence, amount, delay and distance traveled. Bettas showed a preference for the side associated with the presence of another male rather than the side associated with nothing (Exp 1), a greater length of time of the reward (Exp 2) and shorter delay (Exp 3). The animals were indifferent when one side offered a longer delay to a longer reward time compared with a shorter delay to a shorter reward time (Exp 4). What was most surprising, however, was that fish preferred to choose the side that was associated with swimming a greater distance to reach an opponent male (Exp 5). These experiments demonstrate that, while some parameters of a visual reward affect behavior in predicable ways (greater amount, shorter delay), the complex motivations underlying inter-male aggression can produce what appear to be paradoxical results.  相似文献

The asymmetrical inheritance of plasmid DNA, as well as other cellular components, has been shown to be involved in replicative aging. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, there is an ongoing debate regarding the mechanisms underlying this important asymmetry. Currently proposed models suggest it is established via diffusion, but differ on whether a diffusion barrier is necessary or not. However, no study so far incorporated key aspects to segregation, such as dynamic morphology changes throughout anaphase or plasmids size. Here, we determine the distinct effects and contributions of individual cellular variability, plasmid volume and moving boundaries in the asymmetric segregation of plasmids. We do this by measuring cellular nuclear geometries and plasmid diffusion rates with confocal microscopy, subsequently incorporating this data into a growing domain stochastic spatial simulator. Our modelling and simulations confirms that plasmid asymmetrical inheritance does not require an active barrier to diffusion, and provides a full analysis on plasmid size effects.  相似文献

It is well known that circadian rhythms modulate human physiology and behavior at various levels. However, chronobiological data concerning mental and sensorimotor states of motor actions are still lacking in the literature. In the present study, we examined the effects of time-of-day on two important aspects of the human motor behavior: prediction and laterality. Motor prediction was experimentally investigated by means of imagined movements and laterality by comparing the difference in temporal performance between right and left arm movements. Ten healthy participants had to actually perform or to imagine performing arm-pointing movements between two targets at different hours of the day (i.e., 08:00, 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00, and 23:00?h). Executed and imagined movements were accomplished with both the right and left arm. We found that both imagined and executed arm pointing movements significantly fluctuated through the day. Furthermore, the accuracy of motor prediction, investigated by the temporal discrepancy between executed and imagined movements, was significantly better in the afternoon (i.e., 14:00, 17:00, and 20:00?h) than morning (08:00 and 11:00?h) and evening (23:00?h). Our results also revealed that laterality was not stable throughout the day. Indeed, the smallest temporal differences between the two arms appeared at 08:00 and 23:00?h, whereas the largest ones occurred at the end of the morning (11:00?h). The daily variation of motor imagery may suggest that internal predictive models are flexible entities that are continuously updated throughout the day. Likewise, the variations in temporal performance between the right and the left arm during the day may indicate a relative independence of the two body sides in terms of circadian rhythms. Two morphological types ("righty" and "lefty") have been discovered in several fish species and are referred to as a typical example of antisymmetry. It has been suggested, first, that this dimorphism (called laterality) is inheritable; second, that the frequencies of laterality in each species fluctuate around 0.5; and third, that predators mainly exploit prey of the opposite laterality; that is, lefty and righty predators prey on righties and lefties, respectively. The latter is defined as "cross predation"; the antonym "parallel predation" means predation within the same laterality. We hypothesized that cross predation drives alternation of the survival and reproductive advantages between two morphological types, leading to frequency-dependent selection that maintains the dimorphism. To investigate this, we constructed mathematical models of population dynamics of one prey/one predator systems and three-trophic-level systems with omnivory. Mathematical analysis and computer simulations explained the behavior of the laterality frequency in nature well, insofar as cross predation dominated over parallel predation. Furthermore, the simulations showed that when only one of the morphological types exists in a species, the other type can invade.
