The effects of chironomid larvae,Chironomus plumosus, and tubificid worms,Limnodrilus spp., on particle redistribution in lake sediment were investigated experimentally using pots containing sediments obtained from Lake Suwa, Japan. The chironomids and tubificids increased the water content of surface sediment. The chironomid larvae had no effect on particle size distribution, while tubificids continuously accumulated small particles on the surface sediment through their selective feeding activity. Particles larger than 0.125 mm were buried at a sediment depth of 6 cm. In Lake Suwa, long diatom frustules, large plant debris and blue-green algal flocs were found to accumulate in the deeper layer of the lake sediment inhabited by tubificids at high density.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of Tubifex tubifex, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and L. udekemianus, in a riverine mud was studied over a year. Distribution was dependent upon species identity, season and locality. The size structure of the population, and hence species life history, was of fundamental importance in determining temporal patterns of vertical distribution. A positive correlation between worm length and depth of penetration was clearly demonstrated for all three species. However, the mid-stream populations of the three species were closer to the mud surface during the summer and autumn than were the near-bank populations, although the size structures of the populations were not significantly different. Thus, another factor, possibly the distribution of food, also influenced the vertical distribution of the worms. Cocoon distribution was similar to that of the adult worms. Cocoons of the larger species, L. udekemianus, occurred deeper in the mud than those of T. tubifex. A comparison between the vertical distributions of tubificids in cores sectioned in situ, on the stream bank, and 30 mins later, showed there to be no significant change in distribution with time.  相似文献

Response of tidal freshwater macrobenthos to sediment disturbance   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Robert J. Diaz 《Hydrobiologia》1994,278(1-3):201-212
The macrobenthic fauna in the tidal freshwater James River, Virginia, USA, exhibited a high degree of resilience and limited temporal response to sediment disturbance caused by large quantities of low bulk density (< 1.3 g cm–3) fluid mud. The fluid mud was produced by hydraulic dredge deepening of a ship channel with disposal of dredged sediments onto a nearby shoal. The response of tidal freshwater communities to fluid mud was limited to mainly quantitative changes in abundance of dominant taxa (Limnodrilus spp., L. hoffmeisteri, Ilyodrilus templetoni, Corbicula fluminea, Coelotanypus scapularis) and was directly related to the thickness of fluid mud layers. Disturbance effects were short lived and for tubificids most obvious in areas with > 0.3 m fluid mud. In areas that received < 0.3 m fluid mud, acute effects were limited to chironomids and small (< 10 mm) C. fluminea. The fauna colonizing the areas disturbed by fluid mud was the same as that inhabiting the shoal prior to disturbance. There was no indication of a successional sequence, as reported for other freshwater and marine habitats. Three weeks after the disturbance ended, all but a few insect taxa had recolonized. Changes in community structure from fluid mud disturbance were slight with total taxa best characterizing the disturbance. The insensitivity of community structure measures reflects the high resiliency of macrobenthic communities to physical stresses in tidal freshwater systems.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of bottom animals in a large, flat, and unexposed bottom area (about 8 km2) in central Lake Mälaren was investigated. As far as could be seen from preliminary tests the area was homogeneous in most respects. Working from the ice in all 42 tube samples and 6 Ekman samples were obtained from randomly distributed quadrats in a grid measuring 100 × 50 m2. A 0.3 mm gauge net was used for sieving. The mud surface area covered with the tube samples was about 40 cm2. Different methods of illustration were applied to demonstrate how many samples were actually required to show certain characteristics in the bottom fauna. For most purposes the accumulated mean value (cf. Kajak, 1963) was close enough to the stable mean value already after two or three tube samples for both chironomids and tubificids. In order to get a good idea of the five major constituents amongst tubificids (about 96% of all tubificids) two tube samples were found to be quite enough in this particular test. For the seven major constituents (about 99% of all tubificids) four tube samples were sufficient — or one single Ekman sample. The main constituents were well represented after two tube samples or one Ekman sample. Very little further information about the major constituents was obtained after the minimum number of samples mentioned above had been taken. A statistical study based on the same material was performed by a group of statisticians at the Institute of Statistics, University of Stockholm. Different statistical tests were applied to the material. Due to the relatively small number of observations nothing definitely could be said about the actual distribution of tubificids or chironomids in the area. The chironomids seemed to conform better to the Poisson distribution than to the Negative Binomial distribution, while the tubificids showed greater agreement with the Negative Binomial distribution.  相似文献

1. The vertical migration behaviour in electrophoretically distinguishable clones of Daphnia magna Straus was investigated. 2. Clones differed significantly in their tendency to stay near the surface of the tank during the light phase of the daily light/dark cycle, indicating that vertical migration has a genetic component. 3. There was a significant difference in behaviour between juvenile and adult Daphnia: overall the juveniles stayed closer to the water surface than the adults, but the characteristic pattern of clonal differences persisted in the juveniles. 4. When an adult population of each clone was exposed to a fish predator in an experimental tank, the position a clone maintained in the tank at the start of the day had a direct effect on its survival. Clones remaining near to the surface of the water suffered greatest predarion.  相似文献

Submerged ricefield soils, outdoors, and with and without the tubificid Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard, were used to study the effects of tubificids on some biotic and abiotic variables. Measurements of chemical and biological features showed that the tubificids accelerated the diffusion of dissolved substances, increased the release of soil bacteria and enhanced the production of algae and a duckweed (Lemna paucicostata) in the overlying water. In the presence of tubificids, increased numbers of Cladocera (Moina sp., Simocephalus sp.) and ostracods in the overlying water, and higher number of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the soil were observed. The tubificids further enhanced the microbial activity in the upper soil layer, which in turn produced large amounts of organic matter.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess whether a particular value of noninvasive salivary ultra‐weak chemiluminescence (UCL) could be used as a biomarker of psychological stress. Our study covered two groups. Group 1 comprised six healthy volunteers who stayed in a hospital for one night and group 2 comprised 15 patients with lung cancer and 24 patients with respiratory diseases other than lung cancer who were in hospital for an extended stay. First, we evaluated the UCL of saliva from six healthy volunteers before and after one night in hospital. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentrations were also measured. The integrated intensity value of UCL was correlated with the IgA concentration (correlation coefficient 0.90). Second, in the case of a long hospital stay, we found that the maximum salivary UCL intensities were higher in patients with lung cancer than in those with respiratory diseases other than lung cancer or in 28 healthy controls. Effects of predation by carp (Cyprinus carpio L) were analysed in an experimental fishpond where the main components of the benthic fauna were tubificids. Enclosures inaccessible to fishes were compared with the rest of the pond stocked with 30 young carps (1+). Fish predation reduced the density, biomass and production of prey; the production of Tubificidae inside the enclosures was 1.7 times higher than that of the part of the pond stocked with fishes. On the other hand tubificid turnover ratios (P/B) inside and outside enclosures were not significantly different (respectively 5.57 and 5.38), and the size distribution of tubificids was not significantly modified. The ratio of the energetic equivalent of net fish production to biomass of tubificids consumed was 5.59%.  相似文献

The role of tubificids and mud snails in the ricefield ecosystem was elucidated using their ecology as a basis for highlighting problems in the strategy of recycling between agricultural and urban activities. Tubificid oligochaetes occur in high densities in ricefields where irrigation water is polluted with sewage, high organic matter content is present in the soil and when highly toxic insecticides are not used. High tubificid densities reduce and even eliminate weeds, change the composition and density of bacteria and increase the density of zooplankton. Also they serve as a high quality source of food for fish comparable to that of insects. Conditions that promote a healthy growth of tubificids obviate or reduce the need for weedicides and high levels of inorganic fertilizers. Mud snails which thrive in ricefields have been used as an important source of protein food for humans in rural Japan. The snails can consume a sludge-reed compost mixture used as a fertilizer in ricefields. However the high heavy metal content in the sludge is accumulated by the snails which are thus unfit for human consumption. Based on these results and the known ecology of tubificids and the snails, a possible recycling system comprising sewage sludge, reeds, fish, insects and egrets using these two kinds of benthic organisms is proposed.  相似文献

Summary Samples, collected from 1959 to 1970, were used to describe the distribution and ecology of some oligochaetes in the Delta region. In the brackish and marine parts of the estuary the following species were found;Tubifex costatus, T. pseudogaster, Peloscolex benedeni andMonopylephorus rubroniveus. The other identified species were more or less euryhaline-freshwater organisms. The distribution pattern of these species was correlated with salinity and sediment. The species had a wider chlorinity tolerance than reported in the literature. The preference ofPeloscolex benedeni for clay sediments was due to low oxygen or hydrogensulfide conditions in the sediment.Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri preferred well sorted muddy sand bottoms andL. udekemianus less well sorted clay bottoms.Tubifex costatus occurred abundantly in intertidal regions. The occurrence of most of the collected oligochaetes was positively correlated with the quantity of organic matter in the sediment. An investigation carried out from 1971 to 1977 to study the development of the macrofaunal community in the fresh Haringvliet-Hollands Diep basin after closure of this basin showed a mass development of Tubificidae. This was related to the high organic matter content in the bottom and the high colonization and reproductive capacity of these worms. It appeared that several species of tubificids coexisted for several years in the same habitat at a roughly constant relative abundance. Several investigators showed a selective feeding of tubificids on certain groups of bacteria. A niche delimitation probably exists through the nature of the food used by these tubificids.A detailed account of the results presented here will be given elsewhere.  相似文献

Habitat assessments were conducted in an intermountain watershed at three spatial extents to explore ways to predict the presence of tubificid oligochaetes likely to support the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis, cause of salmonid whirling disease. Stream reaches with six different reach slope characteristics were selected using GIS. The aquatic habitat in 60 reaches selected at random was measured and classified into distinct habitat units. Within the habitat units, areas of microhabitat with depositional fine sediments were chosen, measured, and core samples were removed to characterize the sediments and benthic oligochaetes. Two tubificids, Tubifex spp. and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, were abundant and co-occurred in silt-clay and fine sand sediments in these habitats. Models were posed and tested to predict the presence and relative abundance of tubificids using habitat characteristics from the three spatial extents: reach, habitat unit, and microhabitat. At the reach extent, tubificids were associated with low-reach slope and with slow water habitats. Within habitat units, tubificids were associated with higher percentages of fine sediments and higher stream width:depth ratios. In microhabitat cores, the presence of silt-clay sediments was positively associated with higher average stream width:depth ratios. Since ecological relationships are often scale dependent and stream systems have a natural hierarchy, predictive habitat models such as these that use measures from several scales may help researchers and managers more efficiently identify and quantify aquatic communities at highest risk of infection by the M. cerebralis parasite. Summary Length of stopover and rate of weight gain (fat deposition) were studied in several species of passerine birds that stopped in southwestern Louisiana along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico after a trans-Gulf flight. Fatdepleted birds were more common among the birds that arrived at our study site in southwest Louisiana, though variability characterized our samples. Migrants that landed after encountering opposing winds or rain over the northern Gulf of Mexico were, on average, fatter than migrants that landed when weather was favorable for continued migration. Some of the variation in the energetic condition of arrivals may be explained by the location where migrants initiated crossings. Our simulation of flight over the Gulf of Mexico showed that with following winds a warbler can cross the Gulf of Mexico from Yucatan with fat reserves to spare, and stronger tailwinds make flights from as far south as Honduras energetically permissible. The length of stay after a trans-Gulf flight was related to the extent of fat-depletion upon arrival: lean birds stayed longer than fat migrants. Migrants stopped over for 1–7 days and replenished energy reserves at rates that varied from 0.19 g/d for Hooded Warblers (Wilsonia citrina) to 0.87 g/d for Ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapillus). Within each species, most individuals gained weight at a rapid rate, though a few individuals lost or maintained weight during their stay.  相似文献

We examined the effect of prey (Tetranychus urticae) egg density on leaving rate of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, from leaf disks using predators with different feeding experiences and levels of external volatile cues related to their prey. Predators stayed longer on disks with prey eggs than on those without prey eggs. However, at each prey egg density predators stayed longer in the absence of prey-related volatiles from an external source. Starved predators stayed longer in a prey patch than those that had not experienced starvation. At each prey density, starved P. persimilis consumed a greater proportion of prey eggs than satiated predators. The total prey consumption of starved predators appears to be related to their longer residence time on source disks compared to satiated predators and also the per capita consumption rate was greater for starved predators compared to satiated predators.  相似文献

Laboratory research on the tubificids Psammoryctides barbatus and Spirosperma ferox was done. Embryonic development time, growth, time required to attain the first cocoon laying and egg production were estimated at different temperatures and population densities. The results allow us to demonstrate some intrinsic density regulation mechanisms in the profundal tubificid communities and substantiate the hypothesis that the succession from oligotrophic to eutrophic species in the profundal of lakes undergoing eutrophication is mainly based on their biotic characteristics.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of Enchytraeidae and Tubificidae in and around Spartina alterniflora plants in a tidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA were studied using two different sampling techniques: wet funnel extraction and stem dissection. At least 80% of all worms inhabited leaf sheaths at the bases of S. alterniflora plants, and densities were low in sediment, root and surface debris samples. Oligochaete densities were dependent on the position within the marsh, the height on stems and the stage of sheath decay. Six predominant species were identified and included Marionina appendiculata, Marionina spartinae, Marionina waltersi, Marionina paludis, and Monopylephorus parvus. Individual species were distributed differently on stems and enchytraeids were more common than tubificids on standing-dead and further up S. alterniflora stems. Estimates of oligochaete densities in salt marsh habitats are increased dramatically when the numbers of worms on stems are considered. Possible advantages of the stem microhabitat are discussed in relation to the biology and ecology of oligochaetes.  相似文献

In a 3-year study of the moorhen, Gallinula chloropus, some chicks from first broods stayed on their natal territory once they had reached independence, and helped to rear their younger, second brood, siblings. Juvenile dispersal was constrained by habitat saturation, and first brood young were forced to stay on their natal territory. Juveniles that hatched early in the year were forced to stay longer, and helped more than those that hatched late. The total feeding rates to broods with and without juvenile helpers were the same, but parents with helpers reduced their feeding rates relative to parents without helpers. Pairs with helpers (=pairs attempting second broods) reared more chicks per nesting, attempt than pairs rearing chicks at the same time of year without helpers (=pairs attempting first clutch renests). This was true both for all clutches, and for hatched clutches only, even when controlling for parental quality, territory size and scasonal effects.  相似文献

Weight and other data were collected on over 1300 Sedge Warblers Acrocephalus schoenobaenus in central Kenya, mainly during spring (April-May). The weight, fattening rate and length of stay of spring passage birds varied from one site to another. In scrub and thicket at Kariobangi, Nairobi, passage and new arrival continued each year into May; few birds stayed to fatten, and weights over 16 g (40% above mean winter weight) were practically never recorded. At Lake Nakuru, thousands of birds were present during late April-early May 1972; many stayed to fatten for 1–3 weeks, and weights over 16 g (maximum 215 g) were not uncommon; new arrivals of lean birds continued into May. At Athi River, in 1971, many of the birds present during mid-late April stayed 1–2 weeks and fattened rapidly; 20% of all late April weights were in the range 16–21 g. Mean fattening rates at Nakuru and Athi River were 0.31 and 0.64 g/d respectively. The migration strategy and potential flight range of Kenyan spring birds is discussed. Active wing moult was rarely recorded. Most locally wintering birds and spring passage birds were judged to have renewed their plumage during the preceding October-January.  相似文献

Synopsis The sea trout,Salmo trutta, from the Vardnes River generally stays in freshwater during winter. The results from 11 years of tagging experiments showed that the mean annual duration of the feeding migration in the sea was 68 ± 21 days (yearly means ranging between 54 and 88 days). A pronounced variation was found with size, sex and time of migration of the fish and between the different years. The males stayed for a shorter time in the sea (mean 66 days) than the females (mean 69 days) and they usually descended later and ascended earlier. Those fish that descended first stayed for the longest period in the sea. The mean annual duration of stay in the sea for first and second time migrants to the sea was positively correlated with the mean sea temperature in May (r2 > 0.5). A positive correlation was also found between the annual duration of stay in the sea for the sea trout above 33 cm and the mean temperature in the river in July (r2 > 0. 6). Prolonged mean yearly sea sojourn was generally correlated with higher sea temperatures. Water temperature-salinity effects are discussed.  相似文献

The presence of mudskipper eggs in an air-filled chamber was confirmed by direct endoscopic observation of intact burrows of Periophthalmodon schlosseri in a mudflat in Penang, Malaysia. For all five burrows from which video images of egg chambers were successfully obtained, the presence of air was unequivocally demonstrated by the existence of an air–water interface inside the chambers. Of these burrows, eggs were found in two, but not in the others. Eggs were laid uniformly in a monolayer on the inner top surface of the chamber. The much brighter color of the surface mud of the egg chambers than the surrounding mud, irrespective of the presence or absence of the eggs, suggested that the surface mud had been oxidized by deposited air.  相似文献

Many shorebird populations show evidence of declines. To identify the causes is a key issue in developing comprehensive shorebird conservation plans. In coastal areas, shorebirds are vulnerable to effects of shellfish and baitworm digging, including reduction of the food supply. The mudsnail Hydrobia ulvae is often reported to be the dominant inhabitant of intertidal mudflats, and is common in the diet of migrating and wintering shorebirds. This prosobranch mollusc lives at or just below the surface of intertidal mudflats, so it might be directly damaged and killed or buried within the mud by hand diggers. We studied the short-term effects of digging by hand on the availability of mudsnail to shorebirds. Twenty centimetres deep core samples were collected from undisturbed and recently disturbed intertidal mud. The total mudsnail density and biomass per core sample was similar in disturbed and undisturbed mud. However, mudsnail density and biomass were significantly lower in disturbed mud than in undisturbed mud when only the upper five centimetres of the mud were compared. If only the mudsnails found in this surface layer are potentially available for shorebirds, the available mudsnail density and biomass fraction for shorebirds had decreased by 62.6? ?±? 11.4% and 75.7? ?±? 7.2% in disturbed mud, respectively. The potential impact of this decreasing mudsnail fraction on shorebirds is addressed.  相似文献
