Flowering and vegetative shoots of ‘Shamouti’ orange[Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] and ‘Marsh’ seedlessgrapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) were examined for correlationof their morphology and anatomy with fruit set. Fruit set isfavoured on leafy inflorescences whereas abortion is nearlycomplete on leafless inflorescences. Leafless inflorescencesof ‘Shamouti’ with one flower were found to havea very thin stem which contained few vascular bundles, whereasthose with three flowers had better-developed vascular systems. The vascular system of leafy inflorescences is significantlydifferent from that of leafless ones and contains a distinctcentral xylem cylinder. The vascular area of leafless inflorescencesis only about one-quarter of that of the leafy ones. The vascularsystem of grapefruit resembles that of the ‘Shamouti’orange. This study emphasizes the importance of the dimensionof the vascular system for fruit set and provides a possibleexplanation for the better fruit set on both leafy and leaflessinflorescences with several flowers compared with single-floweredinflorescences. This review compares new developmental models on flowering andother vascular plants with evolutionary hypotheses formulatedby Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and like-minded botanists.Special emphasis is laid on philosophical basics such as perspectivism, pluralism about evolutionary modelling, continuum way of thinking, and fuzzy logic. Arber's perspective is best labelled as F uzzyA rberian M orphology (FAM Approach). Its proponents (‘FAMmers’)treat structural categories (e.g. ‘roots’, ‘shoots’,‘stems’, ‘leaves’, ‘stipules’)in vascular plants as concepts with fuzzy borderlines allowingintermediates (including transitional forms, developmental mosaics). The FAM Approach complements Cla ssical Plant M orphology (ClaMApproach), which is the traditional approach in botany. ClaMproponents (‘ClaMmers’) postulate that the structuralcategories of vascular plants are regarded as concepts withclear-cut borderlines and without intermediates. However, duringthe evolution of vascular plants, the root-shoot distinctionand the stem-leaf distinction have become blurred several timesdue to developmental changes, resulting in organs with uniquecombinations of features. This happened, for example, in thebladderworts (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae). When focusingon the ‘leaf’, the FAM Approach is identical toArber's ‘partial-shoot theory of the leaf’ and Sinha's‘leaf shoot continuum model’. A compound leaf canrepeat the developmental pathway of the whole shoot, at leastto some degree. For example, compound leaves of Chisocheton(Meliaceae)with indeterminate apical growth and three-dimensional branchingmay be seen as developmental mosaics sharing some growth processeswith whole shoots! We focus here on the FAM Approach becausethis perspective is especially promising for developmental geneticistsstudying flowering and other vascular plants. Anatomical observations were made on the structure and developmentof the primary haustorium of Alectra vogelii. Its developmentinvolves a mutual aggressive growth of both the host and parasitetissues resulting in the formation of a very large and complextuberous organ. One of the host tissues whose growth is stimulatedby parasite infection is the pericycle whose cells divide repeatedlyand grow around and within the parasite haustorial cortex. Fromvarious points of the proliferating host pericycle, roots becomeinitiated and eventually the entire surface of the haustoriumbecomes covered with these roots. We have referred to them as‘haustorial roots’, a term which we have re-examinedand redefined. True xylary connections are established not onlybetween the parasite and the host root but also between theparasite and these ‘haustorial roots’. The uniquedevelopment of primary haustorium and ‘haustorial roots’in A. vogelii is discussed in relation to the development ofprimary haustoria in other root parasites.  相似文献

Investigations revealed that the anatomy of the primary radicularroot of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L.) was typically dicotyledonousexcept that the xylem was not completely developed centripetally. Most of the roots had tetrarch xylem, although a few triarchand pentarch roots were also observed. In both tuberous andnon-tuberous roots, secondary thickening occurred by the formationof the meristematic vascular cambium which formed secondarytissues in a normal fashion. Subsequently, tuberization wasinitiated in the secondary xylem by the development of anomalous‘secondary’ cambia from parenchyma cells surroundingvessel elements. Anomalous ‘secondary’ cambia alsodeveloped from parenchyma cells not associated with vessels.Subsequently, anomalous ‘tertiary’ cambia differentiatedfrom tissues produced by the anomalous ‘secondary’cambia. Activities of these anomalous cambia resulted in theproduction of parenchyma storage cells and were chiefly responsiblefor the growth of the mature tuber. Extracts of small and mature-size lupin pods yielded four substancesaffecting the growth of wheat-coleoptile sections: one acidpromotor (A), two acid inhibitors(B and X), and one neutralinhibitor(Y). Inhibitor B was extremely active, however, coleoptile sectionsshowed no signs of toxic effects; they resumed growth at a rapidrate after rinsing them and adding ß-indolylaceticand (IAA) to the medium. 1 µg of IAA was required to counteractthe effect of ‘B’ extracted from 230 mg. Of tissue. On an equal fresh weight basis the inhibiting action of ‘B’in lupin pods was 500–1,500 times more potent than thatof ‘inhibitor ß’ in etiolated pea seedlings. Small pods of plants infected with pea-mosaic virus yielded3 times the amount of ‘A’ of healthy plants (equivalentto 1 µg. IAA 0.3 µg. IAA per 25 g. of tissue respectively),and approximately the amount of ‘B’. Mature podsof virus-infected plants again yielded more‘A’,but also 2? times more ‘B’ than pods of healthyplants. Healthy pods yielded more ‘A’ than virus-infectedpods, and there was no difference in ‘X’. A lupin abscission test was developed and the effects of proximaland distal application of -naphthyl acetic acid (NAA) are presented, and discussed with respect to results of other abscission tests. ‘A’ accelerated abscission when applied proximally, and delayed or prevented it when applied distally. ‘B’strongly accelerated abscission when applied in either way.A possible mechanism explaining the abscission-inducing effectof developing pods on later flowers is discussed in terms ofthe substances ‘A’ and ‘B’. The partlyprevented abscission observed on virus-infected plants was foundto agree well with the proposed mechanism.  相似文献

An enlargement of the peduncle and rachis of the terminal racemeand the petiole of the uppermost mainstem leaf was observedin soybean plants [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] treated with thecytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Histological studies wereperformed to determine the timing and extent of anatomical changesaccompanying BAP treatment. Swelling of treated ‘Tracy-M’peduncles, rachises, and petioles was observed within 4–6d after treatment initiation. A significant increase in totalcross-sectional tissue area was observed at lower and intermediateinternodes of treated rachises after 11 d. Rachis enlargementwas due to increases in both cell size and cell number, particularlyof the vascular tissue. In treated petioles of IX93-100, procambialcells of vascular bundles were the first to respond to the BAPtreatment. These cells differentiated into a vascular cambiumwhich formed secondary xylem and phloem. Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., anatomy, rachis, BAP.  相似文献

Each of four amino acid conjugates of IAA was able to replacethe IAA requirement for xylogenesis in lettuce pith explants, when supplied at concentrations ten to 100 times those optimalfor IAA. Tracheary development induced by these conjugates tendedto be slightly slower and less in amount than with IAA, andthe tracheary strands shorter and less regular. Responses differedsomewhat among the four conjugates: IAA-D, L-aspartate gavedevelopment most like that with free IAA, and IAA-D, L-phenylalanineoften yielded the weakest tracheary development, while responsesto IAA-L-alanine and IAA-glycine were intermediate. The resultsare interpreted in terms of the ‘bound’ IAA conjugatesdiffusing into the pith explants and becoming xylogenic onlyon hydrolysis to ‘free’ IAA. As tracheary strandformation is believed to result from IAA fluxes, it seems thatthe free IAA also moved through the discs, presumably towardsthe surfaces where it degrades rapidly. Tracheary strand formationin these explants can be compared with vascular strand formationin the normal shoot tip, where IAA conjugates (auxin ‘precursors’)move acropetally and are hydrolysed to free IAA especially inthe young leaf primordia, we suggest, yielding local sourcesof IAA which may contribute both to the phyllotactic spacingof primordia and, moving basipetally, to the definition of theauxin pathways that develop as procambial strands behind individualleaf primordia. The vascular system in the underground rhizome of Alpinia speciosaL. (Zingiberaceae) is seen to be arranged in three distinctzones. (1) An inner system of ‘scattered’ vascularbundles which serial cinematography reveals to have an axialpattern conforming to the basic ‘palm’ configuration(a system of upwardly branching leaf traces with interconnections).(2) An intermediate zone comprising a thin perforated cylinderof anastomosing vascular strands having direct contact withboth roots and inner system bundles. (3) An outer system offreely-anastomosing vascular bundles. Connexion of outer andinner system occurs in the form of extensive bridging from innersystem leaf traces as they depart obliquely between the outersystem network. The interrelation of the three systems, plus root and branchinsertion, is illustrated by means of diagrammatic three-dimensionalreconstructions. The intermediate zone is intimately associatedwith root insertions and with the inner system, and is shownto obliviate potential bottlenecks at the point of lateral branchinsertion in this sympodial rhizome system. A comparison ismade with other monocotyle-donous vascular systems. Alpinia speciosa L., shell ginger, rhizome, vascular anatomy  相似文献

Crop phenology is one of the most important characters influencingproductivity in a given environment. Narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinusangustifolius L.) is a major grain legume crop in southern Australiawith general phenological adaptation to this Mediterranean-typeenvironment. However, it is an indeterminate crop with severalassociated limitations to productivity, such as overlappingvegetative and reproductive growth, late grain filling and sometimesexcessive vegetative growth. Here we studied two novel typesof narrow-leafed lupin with restricted branching, which mightbe useful for overcoming these problems. These restricted branchinglupins arose spontaneously within a breeding population, inthe case of ‘Tallerack’, and within a farmer's cropin the case of ‘ Hurst’ and we compared them withthe ‘Merrit’, which is widely grown and has thenormal indeterminate branching habit. The morphology and developmentof the main shoot of these genotypes were similar. However,‘Hurst’ had much larger leaves. There were alsostriking differences in the lateral branches of the restrictedbranching types; they had fewer leaves than ‘Merrit’and flowered earlier. These differences were most marked in‘ Hurst’, where the upper main stem branches werereduced to a single floret in the axil of main stem leaves, and these flowers often exhibited abnormal morphology. Cordeauxia edulis (Somalia and Ethiopia), andStuhlmannia moavii(Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar) are evergreen shrubs or smalltrees of dry areas. They have similar leaf anatomy as revealedby resin sectioning and scanning electron microscopy. The cuticleis extremely thick and all vascular bundles lack bundle sheathextensions. The most unusual feature is the mesophyll, threeto seven layers consisting entirely of cylindrical palisadecells with lateral walls capable of changing vertical lengthby folding in a concertina-like manner. The matching outwardfolds of two adjacent cells always remain attached by meansof a row of wall thickenings (‘pegs’). The pegscan elongate, especially so between the widely separated mesophyllcells that occupy the substomatal chamber area. The unattachedflexible inward wall folds enable these ‘concertina’cells to shorten or lengthen vertically without disrupting cellinterconnections in the interior of each relatively long-livedleaf as it periodically loses and gains water. Concertina cellsmay be an anatomical adaptation allowing these leaves to remainevergreen and survive extended periods of drought and yet tostore water quickly when it becomes available. A detailed morphological study of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth) was conducted under ‘vegetative’and ‘reproductive’ growth conditions (short andlong photoperiods) and at different temperatures. Perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Westerwolds ryegrass (Loliummuhiflorum Lam.) were compared during vegetative growth. Prairie grass had higher leaf appearance rates (leaves per tillerper day) and lower site filling (tillers per tiller per leafappearance interval) than the ryegrass species. Tillering rates(tillers per tiller per day) were also lower, except under vegetativeconditions at 4C. Low tiller number in prairie grass was notdue to lack of tiller sites but a result of poor filling ofthese sites. Lower site filling occurred because of increaseddelays in appearance of the youngest axillary tiller and lackof axillary tillers emerging from basal tiller buds. In prairiegrass, no tillers came from coleoptile buds while only occasionallydid prophyll buds develop tillers. Low tiller number in prairiegrass was compensated for by greater tiller weight. Prairiegrass had more live leaves per tiller, greater area per leafand a high leaf area per plant. Considerable variation between cultivars was found in prairiegrass. The cultivar ‘Bellegarde’ had high leaf appearance, large leaves and rapid reproductive development, but had lowlevels of site filling, tillering rate, final tiller numberand herbage quality during reproductive growth. ‘Primabel’tended to have the opposite levels for these parameters, while‘Grasslands Matua’ was intermediate and possiblyprovided the best balance of all plant parameters. prairie grass, Bromus willdenowii Kunth, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., Westerwolds ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam., temperature, photoperiod, leaf appearance, leaf area, tillering, site filling, tillering sites, yield  相似文献

Species that showed marked morphological and physiological responsesby their roots to Fe-deficiency (Strategy I plants) were comparedwith others that do not exhibit these responses (Strategy IIplants). Roots from Fe-deficient cucumber (Cucumis sativusL.‘Ashley’), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumMill.T3238FER) and pea (Pisum sativumL. ‘Sparkle’) plantsproduced more ethylene than those of Fe-sufficient plants. Thehigher production of ethylene in Fe-deficient cucumber and peaplants occurred before Fe-deficient plants showed chlorosissymptoms and was parallel to the occurrence of Fe-deficiencystress responses. The addition of either the ethylene precursorACC, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, or the ethylenereleasing substance, Ethephon, to several Fe-sufficient StrategyI plants [cucumber, tomato, pea, sugar beet (Beta vulgarisL.),Arabidopsis(Arabidopsis thaliana(L.) Heynh ‘Columbia’), plantago(Plantago lanceolataL.)] promoted some of their Fe-deficiencystress responses: enhanced root ferric-reducing capacity andswollen root tips. By contrast, Fe-deficient roots from severalStrategy II plants [maize (Zea maysL. ‘Funo’), wheat(Triticum aestivumL. ‘Yécora’), barley (HordeumvulgareL. ‘Barbarrosa’)] did not produce more ethylenethan the Fe-sufficient ones. Furthermore, ACC had no effecton the reducing capacity of these Strategy II plants and, exceptin barley, did not promote swelling of root tips. In conclusion, results suggest that ethylene is involved in the regulationof Fe-deficiency stress responses by Strategy I plants.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company. The effect of tetraploidy on leaf characteristics and net gasexchange was studied in diploid (2x ) and autotetraploid (4x) ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osb.) and ‘Femminello’ lemon (Citrus limon (L.)Burm. f.) leaves. Comparisons between ploidy levels were madeunder high irradiance (I) in a growth chamber or low total Iin a glasshouse. Tetraploids of both species had thicker leaves, larger mesophyll cell volume and lower light transmittance thandiploids regardless of growth I. Mesophyll surface area perunit leaf area of 2x leaves was 5–15% greater than on4x leaves. Leaf thickness and mesophyll cell volume were greaterin high I leaves than low I leaves. In high I, average leafarea was similar for 2x and 4x leaves, whereas in low I it was30% greater in 4x than in 2x leaves. Nitrogen and chlorophyllconcentration per cell increased with ploidy level in both growthconditions. The ratio of chlorophyll a:b was 25% greater in2x than in 4x leaves. When net CO2assimilation rate (ACO2) wasbased on leaf area, 4x orange leaves had 24–35% lowerACO2than their diploids. There were no significant differencesin ACO2between 2x and 4x orange or lemon leaves when expressedon a per cell basis. Overall, lower ACO2per unit leaf area oftetraploids was related to increase in leaf thickness, largermesophyll cell volume, the decrease in mesophyll area exposedto internal air spaces, and the lower ratio between cell surfaceto cell volume. Such changes probably increased the resistanceto CO2diffusion to the site of carboyxlation in the chloroplasts. Haploids (2n =24) of the common tetraploid (2n=48) potato (SolanumtuberosumL.) provide promising material for attacking many problemsconcerned with the genetics, cytogenetics and breeding of thisspecies. Interspecific 4xx2xcrosses betweenSolanum tuberosumgp.Andigenaorgp.Tuberosumcultivars as pistillate parents andSolanum tuberosumgp.Phurejaassource of pollen (hereafter ‘pollinator’) have beenused to produce maternally derived haploids through parthenogenesis. This paper discusses the nature of the ‘pollinator’effect in haploid extraction. The ‘pollinator’ hada significant effect on haploid frequencies following 4xx2xcrosses.The ‘pollinator’ effect seems to operate via theendosperm, in which haploid (n=2x) embryos are associated withhexaploid endosperm. A superior ‘pollinator’ appearsto have its effect by contributing two haploid (n) gametes tothe central cell. 2n pollen; double fertilization; endosperm; ploidy manipulations; Solanum tuberosum  相似文献

Previous experiments on the effects of auxins on the geotropicresponses of seedling pea roots (Audus and Brownbridge, 1957)have been extended using the ‘anti-auxin’ -(I-naphthylmethylsulphide)propionicacid (NMSP) alone and in combination with indole-3-acetic acid(IAA) and 2:4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2:4-D). NMSP action differs from that of the auxins in that it reducesthe rate of curvature progressively as the concentration isincreased, irrespective of whether the overall extension growthof the roots is being stimulated (10 and 30 p.p.m.) or inhibited(100 p.p.m.). Correspondingly the reaction time is lengthenedby 25–50 per cent. in all concentrations. Studies of responsesin mixtures of growth-stimulating concentrations of NMSP (30p.p.m.) and growth-inhibiting concentrations of IAA (10–8)and 2:4-D (3 x 10–8) show that auxins and ‘antiauxins’are mutually antagonistic in most, if not all, their actionson growth and curvature. The results suggest that the anti-auxin NMSP may stimulate rootgrowth and inhibit curvature by interfering with the synthesisor distribution of a natural endogenous inhibitor, which isnot IAA. NMSP inhibition of root growth in high concentrationsmust, however, be exerted independently of this natural inhibitor. The mutual antagonisms shown between the auxins and NMSP arebest explained in terms of an interference with access to thegrowth centres; competitive action at the growth centres themselvesseems not to be involved.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to determine the effect of tradewinds in Guam, USA, on growth and gas exchange of three papaya(Carica papaya L.) cultivars. ‘Known You 1’, ‘Sunrise’,and ‘Tainung 2’ papaya seedlings at two differentstages of development were exposed to 0, 36 or 100% ambientwind. Wind exposure reduced stem height and leaf or stem dryweight in most cases, but had little influence on root growth.Net CO2assimilation (ACO2) at midday was lower for seedlingsexposed to wind than for those protected from wind. Dark respirationof exposed seedlings increased as much as 120% above that ofthe protected seedlings during the night. Wind exposure decreasedwhole plant evapotranspiration by up to 36% during the photoperiod, but increased evapotranspiration by 58–87% during thenocturnal period. Responses to wind exposure were similar amongcultivars, except that growth of ‘Tainung 2’ seedlingswas less affected by wind than that of the other cultivars.Seedlings that were exposed to the various wind treatments fromgermination onwards were less influenced by wind exposure thanwere seedlings that were grown in a protected nursery beforebeing exposed to the various wind treatments. These data indicatethat: (1) ambient trade winds in Guam are strong enough to decreasethe growth of papaya seedlings; (2) plant age influences theresponse; (3) stem and leaf growth are more influenced thanroot growth; and (4) decreasedACO2 and increased dark respirationmay be partly responsible for growth reduction. The stelar anatomy of Stenochlaena palustris is described. Thestem is dictyostelic and in transverse section shows five orsix closely situated large central meristeles. Around theseare two rings of smaller peripheral bundles. These outer ringsare mainly ‘residual traces’ derived from the leaf-and root-traces. They anastomose freely and are intimately connectedwith the central system. The dictyostely of the latter is due both to leaf-gaps and tomom or lesa random perforations, the latter being the more numerous. The leaf-trace, at first binary, enters the petiole along witha large number of the smaller bundles from the stem periphery.‘Root-traces’ are given off from the base of theleaf-gaps.  相似文献

Field experiments using two soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill)cultivars (‘Elgin 87’ and ‘Essex’) wereconducted for 2 years near Lexington, KY, USA to evaluate theeffect of source-sink alterations on seed carbohydrate statusand growth. Sucrose concentrations in developing cotyledonsof control plants were consistently low (<50 m M) early inseed development, but they increased to 100–150 m M byphysiological maturity. The concentrations increased in bothyears by 47 to 59% when 90% of the pods were removed from ‘Elgin87’, but the increase had no effect on individual seedgrowth rate (SGR). Shading (80%) reduced cotyledon sucrose levelsand SGR in both years. The critical cotyledon sucrose concentration(the concentration providing 80% of the maximum cotyledon growthrate) was estimated fromin vitro cotyledon growth at sucroseconcentrations of 0–200 m M. These critical concentrationsvaried from 72–124 m M;in planta control cotyledon sucroseconcentrations were below this critical level during the firsthalf of seed growth but exceeded it in the later stages of growthin all experiments. The estimated critical concentration wasconsistent with the failure of in planta SGR to respond to anincrease in assimilate supply and with the reduction in SGRassociated with a decrease in assimilate supply. The resultssuggest that soybean SGR is generally sink limited if photosynthesisincreases during seed filling, but source limited if photosynthesisis reduced.
