We determined whether female Japanese medaka (Oryzias laiipes)copied the choice of other females or independently preferredactively courting males. We allowed focal females to observeand subsequently choose between a male that courted and potentiallyspawned with a receptive female and a male that courted andwas rejected by an unreceptive female. When the receptive femaledid not spawn, the focal female preferred the male with thehigher courtship rate; whereas when the receptive female spawned, the focal female preferred the spawning male. Our results suggestthat female medaka prefer actively courting males, unless theyhave the opportunity to copy the mate choice of another female.  相似文献

Although male–female relationships can offer a number of advantages such as protection or social support, they are poorly studied among primates compared to same-sex relationships. We used 12 yr of data from the Kanyawara chimpanzee community to compare three independent measures of association (party association, 5m association, and grooming) among all adult dyads. Party association exhibited by male–female dyads was of intermediate strength between strong male–male and weak female–female association. Male–female dyads were less likely to be within 5m of one another and to groom as male–male dyads, but equally likely to be within 5m and more likely to groom as female–female dyads. Variation in male–female association strength was not related to male rank but was affected by female ranging patterns and female reproductive states. Females with core areas in the center of the home range were more likely to be in parties with males but did not show higher spatial proximity or grooming indices compared to females ranging in the periphery. Party association and 5m indices were higher for dyads of males and estrous females compared to those with anestrous females. These results indicate that male–female dyads are likely to associate with one another more often than female–female dyads because of overlapping ranging patterns and short-term changes in female reproductive state. We conclude that male and female chimpanzees do not exhibit proximity and grooming patterns indicative of strong affiliative bonds. This study also highlights the importance of using multiple independent measures of bond strength in studies of primate social dynamics.  相似文献

Females of manyDrosophila species spread apart their wings prior to copulation. In the present study we found female wing spreading to provoke male copulation attempts inDrosophila virilis-group species, helping the males to attempt copulation when the female is ready to mate. The males of most species, however, rarely responded to female wing spreading by copulation attempt without licking the female genitalia before and/or after female wing spreading bout. Blocking the female genitalia (D. virilis, D. novamexicana) reduces males' tendency to attempt copulation after female wing spreading. In these, and most other species of the group, female wing spreading seems to be an efficient signal only when combined with stimuli from female genitalia.  相似文献

Septal lesions increase behavioral responsiveness to estrogen of male, female, and androgen-sterilized female (ASF) rats as measured by lordosis behavior. Male and ASF animals normally show low levels of female sexual receptivity when compared to normal female rats. However, the level of female sexual behavior in male and ASF rats with septal lesions is comparable to that of highly receptive female rats. Progesterone facilitates the estrogen-induced female sexual behavior of female, but not male or ASF, animals. Andrenalectomy had no effect on the increased behavioral sensitivity to estrogen induced by septal lesions. Amygdala lesions, comparable in size to septal lesions, did not facilitate female sexual behavior. The male or female pattern of gonadotropin release is not affected by septal lesions, indicating a disassociation between the regulation of gonadotropin release and sexual behavior. Since septal lesions facilitate lordosis behavior in rats, the septal region appears to exert a tonic inhibition on female sexual behavior.  相似文献

In mating systems based on substrate‐borne vibrations, sexual communication often involves a reciprocal exchange of species‐ and sex‐specific vibrational signals and male is searching for a stationary female. In the leafhopper Aphrodes makarovi, female reply is essential for successful location of the female and its variable duration directly affects male's costs associated with signalling and searching. We studied male and female behaviour in a trio situation (two males and one female), and our results show that male–male competition had important effects on male mating success. Females replied equally to advertisement calls emitted by the winning and losing males and mated with the first male that located them, regardless of his investment in calling effort. Males eavesdropped to male–female duet maintained by the rival, and the winners were better at exploiting female replies to the rival's advertisement calls by silently approaching the female. To interfere with the ongoing male–female duet, males also emitted masking signals overlapping the latter part of the female reply. More overlapped female replies were registered in response to the losers and masking signals most likely delay the rival in reaching the female. Our study shows that a comprehensive understanding of male mating success and female preferences in vibrational duetting systems requires also investigations in more complex settings that more realistically represent the situation in nature.  相似文献

The evolution of a female penis is an extremely rare event and is only known to have occurred in a tribe of small cave insects, Sensitibillini (Psocodea: Trogiomorpha: Prionoglarididae). The female penis, which is protrudable and inserted into the male vagina‐like cavity during copulation to receive semen, is thought to have evolved independently twice in this tribe, in the Brazilian Neotrogla and the African Afrotrogla. These findings strongly suggest that there are some factors unique to Sensitibillini that have facilitated female penis evolution. Here, several hypothetical factors are presented that may have enabled the evolution of the female penis in Sensitibillini. The female–female competition for nutritious semen, the oligotrophic environment, and the twin insemination slots with switching valve are considered to be the driving factors for female penis evolution. Additionally, the following factors are considered responsible for relaxing the constraint against female penis evolution: preexistence of the female‐above mating position, the elongated duct connecting the female pre‐penis with the sperm storage organ, and the small male genital cavity accepting the female genital tubercle bearing the opening of this duct. Understanding the factors enabling female penis evolution may also shed light on the evolution of the male penis.  相似文献

The evolution of female multiple mating is best understood by consideration of male and female reproductive perspectives. Females should usually be selected to remate at their optimum frequencies whereas males should be selected to manipulate female remating to their advantage. Female remating behavior may therefore be changed by variation of male and female traits. In this study, our objective was to separate the effects of female and male strains on female remating for the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis, for which there is interstrain variation in female remating frequency. We found that interstrain variation in female remating is primarily attributable to female traits, suggesting genetic variation in female receptivity to remating in C. chinensis. Some interstrain variation in female remating propensity was attributable to an interaction between female and male strains, however, with the males of some strains being good at inducing nonreceptivity in females from one high-remating strain whereas others were good at inducing copulation in nonvirgin females from the high-remating strain. There is, therefore, interstrain variation in male ability to deter females from remating and in male ability to mate successfully with nonvirgin females. These results suggest that mating traits have evolved along different trajectories in different strains of C. chinensis.  相似文献

In 234 copulations, male and female behavioural patterns were collected, especially the vocal pattern for the female. Moreover quantitative structural analysis was performed on 38 of these female copulatory vocalizations. A multifactorial analysis, ANAFAC, was performed to seek relations between (1) utterance of female copulatory call and male and female copulatory behaviour and (2) these patterns and the great variability of female calls. Utterance of female copulatory vocalizations is essentially due to the female’s own copulatory behaviour in periods of intense sexual activity. Long female calls are related to male ejaculation, and those “rich” in harmonics are related to visual and tactile communicatory signals exchanged by the male and the female during a mount. This analysis strongly confirms the tied bond between quality of a call and internal state of the emitter. Long calls, rich in harmonics, may serve as signals maintaining or strengthening the possibly temporary preferential relation between male and sexually receptive female.

Two experiments explored the motivational impact of primary incentive female cues on the operant behavior of sexually naive and experienced male rats. In the first experiment, a straight-arm runway was used to assess the subjects' motivation to approach a goalbox containing either male or female "targets." Twelve sexually naive Long-Evans males ran for: (1) an empty goalbox; (2) a male conspecific; (3) an ovariectomized (OVX) female; (4) an OVX female given estradiol; (5) or an OVX female treated with estradiol and progesterone. A perforated Plexiglas partition in the goalbox prevented the subject males from physically interacting with the targets, although olfactory, visual, and auditory cues were accessible. We hypothesized that subjects would manifest shorter run times (reflecting greater motivation) when the goalbox contained a receptive/proceptive female as opposed to a nonreceptive female target. Subjects' run times were ordered depending on the nature of the target (from slowest to fastest): empty goalbox, male conspecific, OVX female, OVX + estradiol female, and OVX + estradiol + progesterone female. As predicted, subjects ran significantly faster for a receptive/proceptive female than for a nonreceptive female, indicating that sexually naive males are inherently motivated by female precopulatory cues. In the second experiment, 30 sexually naive male subjects ran for a goalbox containing either a nonestrous (OVX) or an estrous (OVX + estradiol + progesterone) female. Following six trials, 10 males were allowed one intromission with a receptive female, 10 males experienced one ejaculation, and 10 remained sexually naive. Only those males having experienced an ejaculation subsequently decreased their run times for both nonestrous and estrous females, indicating that sexual reinforcement produced by ejaculation, but not intromission, further enhances the motivational impact of female incentive cues.  相似文献

By preferring mates with increasingly costly ornaments or courtship displays, females cause an escalation of male reproductive costs. Such increased costs should promote male selectivity based on fecundity‐linked female attributes, leading to female ornamentation in species with traditional sex roles. Consequently, female ornamentation should evolve more frequently in taxa where male reproduction is costly than in comparable taxa where it is cheaper. We assessed the prevalence of female ornamental colouration in two clades of viviparous cyprinodontid fish: the Goodeinae, where stringent female choice imposes male mating costs, and the Poeciliinae, whose males can circumvent female mate choice. We found that although in the Poeciliinae female ornamental colour is a correlated, but paler version of male coloration, females of the Goodeinae often display vivid ornamental colours that are distinct from those of males. Thus, male and female ornaments are not (phylo)genetically correlated in the Goodeinae. Furthermore, phylogenetic signal on male and female colour is clearly detectable in the Poeciliinae, but absent in the Goodeinae, suggesting that ornamental colour of males and females in the latter may be the consequence of selection. Given that enforceable female choice has promoted male ornaments, we propose that evolutionary retribution has promoted distinct female ornaments in the Goodeinae.  相似文献

The effect of the presence of female hamsters on female rat reproductive cycles was assessed. This was accomplished by maintaining two colony rooms, one of which contained only female rats, whereas the other contained both female rats and female hamsters; the estrous cycles of female rats in these rooms were compared. Rats in the rat-hamster room displayed fewer periods of acyclicity than did rats in the rat-alone room. These data indicate that there can be interspecific effects on the periodicity of the rat reproductive cycle.  相似文献

Three laboratory experiments were performed to assess parasitization of freeze-killed house fly puparia, buried 0 to 6 cm in media, by Muscidifurax raptor Girault & Saunders, Muscidifurax raptorellus Kogan & Legner, Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner, Trichomalopsis sarcophagae (Gahan) and Urolepis rufipes (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). Virtually no parasitization occurred at depths greater than 1 cm in large arenas (988 cm2) with densities of 0.3 puparia and 0.008 female parasitoids per cm2. Parasitization was observed at depths as great as 4 cm for three of five species in small arenas (3 cm2) with densities of 6.4 puparia and 1.0 female per cm2. Combined across experiments, M. raptor achieved the highest level of parasitization, followed by M. zaraptor, M. raptorellus, U. rufipes, and T. sarcophagae. The greatest number of F1 females was produced by the gregarious species T. sarcophagae (834 female female) and M. raptorellus (708 female female), and then by the solitary species M. raptor (530 female female), M. zaraptor (365 female female) and U. rufipes (163 female female). High parasitization by M. raptor and high production of offspring by T. sarcophagae identify these species as being particularly attractive as biological control agents.  相似文献

Female-limited color polymorphisms occur in a variety of animal taxa where excessive male sexual harassment may explain the coexistence of multiple female color morphs. In the color polymorphic damselfly Ischnura elegans, mature and immature female color morphs coexist at the mating site where males are in search for suitable mating partners. Here, we study male preference and female mating propensity for the two immature female morphs. As would be expected, compared to mature morphs, both immature female morphs mate much less. Within immature females, one morph consistently mates more frequently compared to the other morph, a pattern that is similar for the ontogenetically corresponding mature female morphs. Preference experiments with the two differently colored immature female morphs, however, did not indicate male mate preference for either morph. Low mating frequencies of immature females at natural sites in combination with relatively high attractiveness of immature models in terms of male preference indicate that female behavior influences female mating success.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphisms are powerful model systems to study the maintenance of diversity in nature. In some systems, polymorphisms are limited to female coloration; these are thought to have arisen as a consequence of reducing male mating harassment, commonly resulting in negative frequency‐dependent selection on female color morphs. One example is the damselfly Ischnura elegans, which shows three female color morphs and strong sexual conflict over mating rates. Here, we present research integrating male tactics, and female evolutionary strategies (female mating behavior and morph‐specific female fecundity) in populations with different morph‐specific mating frequencies, to obtain an understanding of mating rates in nature that goes beyond the mere measure of color frequencies. We found that female morph behavior differed significantly among but not within morphs (i.e., female morph behavior was fixed). In contrast, male tactics were strongly affected by the female morph frequency in the population. Laboratory work comparing morph‐specific female fecundity revealed that androchrome females have lower fecundity than both of the gynochrome female morphs in the short term (3‐days), but over a 10‐day period one of the gynochrome female morphs became more fecund than either of the other morphs. In summary, our study found sex‐specific dynamics in response to different morph frequencies and also highlights the importance of studying morph‐specific fecundities across different time frames to gain a better understanding of the role of alternative reproductive strategies in the maintenance of female‐limited color polymorphism.  相似文献

Repeatable differences in preference between females are a prerequisite for the evolution of female choice. Existing studies have concentrated on the repeatability of female preference for the male trait eliciting the highest female response but have rarely dealt with female choosiness and response rate, which are also important traits for the evolution of female choice and can mimic repeatable variation in preference. We used a method devised to disentangle the effects of preference, choosiness and response rate to examine the repeatability of female choice for acoustic signals in the grasshopperChorthippus biguttulus . We stimulated females with artificial courtship signals that varied in one signal trait and recorded the number of acoustic responses of the females in two sessions separated by several days. Using a normal distribution function within a nonlinear regression between signalling trait and female response rate, we independently calculated values for female preference, choosiness and maximum response rate for the two sessions. All three aspects of female choice showed significant repeatability indicating large differences between females. This method will also be suitable for measuring the heritability of female preference, a crucial question regarding the evolution of female choice. The question of whether bonobos show feeding priority and female dominance has been proposed and examined, both in the wild and in captive studies, with differing results. The relationship between female dominance and female feeding priority has been best studied in prosimian primates. These studies use established criteria of females consistently evoking submissive behavior from males in dyadic encounters for determining female dominance. Although the relationship is complex, female dominance in prosimians is associated with preferential access to food. Data from studies of wild habituated bonobos in the Lomako Forest, Democratic Republic of the Congo, are examined for evidence of both female feeding priority and female social dominance using similar criteria as used for prosimians. Bonobos showed evidence of female feeding priority in small, but not in large, food patches. Male-male competition for mating opportunities at the start of the food bout was related to some, but not all, differences in time spent feeding between the sexes. Female dominance similar to that seen in prosimians was not observed in these bonobos. Males were consistently dominant in dyadic interactions. Female feeding priority with male dyadic social dominance implies that male deference during feeding cannot be excluded as one explanation of interpretations of female dominance in bonobos. Additionally, dominance of male bonobos by females appears to require the presence of female coalition partners. As in other primates with female feeding priority, bonobo females express this trait where food is economically defendable. Unlike prosimians, however, bonobo female feeding priority may result from male deference and the importance of female coalitions in nondyadic interactions.  相似文献

Lactate, glycerol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline in venous blood following 400 m and 3000 m runs were measured in 6 untrained male students, 5 female handball players, 6 female sprinters and 6 female long-distance runners. Physical performance in the two events by the untrained males was the same as for the female handball players, but was less than that by the female sprinters and female long-distance runners. Peak blood lactate levels obtained after 400 m sprinting, and glycerol concentration following the 3000 m run were not significantly different between the untrained males and the female handball players. On the other hand, both peak blood lactate concentrations after 400 m sprinting for female sprinters and peak blood glycerol levels following a 3000 m run for female long-distance runners were significantly higher than those in the untrained male subjects. In both runs there was no significant difference in adrenaline and noradrenaline between the untrained male group and the female handball players. These results suggest that blood lactate in a 400 m run, and glycerol in a 3000 m run might be a reflection of physical performance level but not of sex difference.  相似文献
