First incisor teeth from known‐age domestic sheep were examined to determine whether annual lines developed, and to test 3 processing techniques. Fluorescing lines in undecalcified, unstained transverse sections indicated completed years in 44 % of teeth. Dark lines in decalcified, stained transverse sections indicated completed years in 8 % of teeth. Dark lines seen by reflected light in undecalcified roots ground transversely by hand indicated completed years in 62 % of teeth. Grinding by hand was the simplest, quickest, and most dependable method.  相似文献

In root cementum of teeth, alternating dark and light lines become visible in cross-sections under the light microscope. These lines bear an apparent resemblance to the annual rings of trees. Numerous studies have been done to correlate the number of cementum lines with the dental age by examining a great number of teeth of known age. Our study used a different approach. If lines in root cementum develop in an annual rhythm and are thus comparable to annual rings of trees, the same or at least a very similar number of these structures should be found in all areas of the root cementum of the same tooth. We counted cementum lines in the buccal, lingual, distal and mesial region of different sections, all from the middle third of the same root. This was repeated in eight teeth. To our surprise, we had immense difficulty in counting reproducible line numbers in the same cementum area at repeated counts. Nevertheless, the same tooth was found to differ markedly in the number of lines in different sections as well as in different regions of the same sections. These differences cannot be ascribed to variations caused by difficulties with reproducible line counting. Therefore, we are more than skeptical about the reliability of counting lines in root cementum as a method for determining the age of human teeth.  相似文献

Age determination in the Common duiker Sylvicapra grimmia was investigated by analysis of tooth eruption and replacement sequence, incremental lines of tooth cementum and tooth wear in a unique collection of 48 known-age skulls, and also by analysis by post-natal body growth in known-age duiker. In both the mandible and maxilla, permanent molariform teeth were fully erupted and in wear by 26 months of age. There was little variation in the age of eruption and replacement of all molariform teeth, making this a particularly useful feature of the duiker for age determination purposes. In contrast, the variability in eruption of the incisiforms, coupled with the difficulty in distinguishing deciduous incisiforms from the permanent counterparts, placed an unexpected limitation on the use of these teeth. Although the apparent linear relationship between tooth attrition and age has potential for further investigation as an age determination technique, the cementum annuli were not correlated with chronological age. Theoretical Von Bertalanffy equations were used to analyse body growth with age. It was concluded that because the asymptote of growth was reached at such an early age, and because there is so much individual variation in growth, body growth, including horn growth, is of very limited value for age determination. Quantification of dental long-period growth lines (Retzius lines in enamel and Andresen lines in dentine) and matching of stress patterns (internal accentuated lines and hypoplasias) are used in determining crown formation time and age at death in juvenile fossil hominins. They yield the chronology employed for inferences of life history. Synchrotron virtual histology has been demonstrated as a non-destructive alternative to conventional invasive approaches. Nevertheless, fossil teeth are sometimes poorly preserved or physically inaccessible, preventing observation of the external expression of incremental lines (perikymata and periradicular bands). Here we present a new approach combining synchrotron virtual histology and high quality three-dimensional rendering of dental surfaces and internal interfaces. We illustrate this approach with seventeen permanent fossil hominin teeth. The outer enamel surface and enamel-dentine junction (EDJ) were segmented by capturing the phase contrast fringes at the structural interfaces. Three-dimensional models were rendered with Phong’s algorithm, and a combination of directional colored lights to enhance surface topography and the pattern of subtle variations in tissue density. The process reveals perikymata and linear enamel hypoplasias on the entire crown surface, including unerupted teeth. Using this method, highly detailed stress patterns at the EDJ allow precise matching of teeth within an individual’s dentition when virtual histology is not sufficient. We highlight that taphonomical altered enamel can in particular cases yield artificial subdivisions of perikymata when imaged using X-ray microtomography with insufficient resolution. This may complicate assessments of developmental time, although this can be circumvented by a careful analysis of external and internal structures in parallel. We further present new crown formation times for two unerupted canines from South African Australopiths, which were found to form over a rather surprisingly long time (> 4.5 years). This approach provides tools for maximizing the recovery of developmental information in teeth, especially in the most difficult cases.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of counting incremental lines of dental root cementum for biological age determination, and to compare it with alternative methods. Two samples were taken: 51 teeth from 49 individuals of known age obtained at the Stomatological Clinic, Vilnius University, as well as the canine teeth from the remains of 48 individuals from the mass graves of Tuskulenai in Vilnius (inhumed 1944-47). In the latter sample, the chronological age of 43 individuals was known through personal identification. Undecalcified teeth were sectioned with the Leica SP 1600 microtome diamond saw, and incremental line count as a blind test was made on sections of 35 to 100 microns thickness. Incremental line count was possible in 82-86 percent of cases. The results of three independent counts showed that intra-observer bias has no significant impact. Biological age was estimated by adding incremental line number to the average age of tooth eruption. It was found that mean absolute error was 6.46 years for the 1st sample, 6.27 years for the 2nd sample, and in some cases exceeded 10 years. For the 2nd sample, the results were compared to those of other methods such as endocranial suture ossification, pubic symphysis morphology and the "combined" method of Nemeskéri. All four methods yield a similar correlation in regard to an individual's chronological age. The highest correlation was found for the combined method, and the lowest one for public symphysis morphology. All correlations had a similar standard error. Thus our assessment is less enthusiastic than in some past studies; it is suggested that the incremental lines rather have a similar use as other methods.  相似文献

The correlation of series of two darkly-staining lines in the tooth cementum of tropical African mammals from areas of bimodal equatorial rainfall is briefly reviewed, and contrasted with the findings in southern Africa where bi-annual lines are claimed for areas of unimodal rainfall. A sample of African buffalo teeth from a unimodal rainfall area in southern Tanzania was examined and the conclusion reached that, in general, one dark line per year was formed. A miscellaneous selection of mainly known age animals was also examined with varied results. Anomalies in the apparent formation of cementum lines are discussed.  相似文献

The dentine and cementum of the mammals exhibit incremental lines (IL) that may be seen as dark and light rings in properly prepared sections of teeth. Counting of IL provides a potential method to evaluate the absolute age of many wild species. The aim of the present study was to evaluate IL in small bat species and to test whether the number of IL is associated with the absolute age of bat when its minimal age was known based on ringing data. Teeth of 26 specimens of the following species were examined:Myotis daubentonii (n = 12),Barbastella barbastellus (n = 4),M. brandtii (n = 2),M. nattereri (n = 2),Pipistrellus nathusii (n = 2),Plecotus auritus (n = 2),M. dasycneme (n = 1),Vespertilio murinus (n = 1). Transverse morphological sections of canines, incisors and postcanine teeth were analysed by a light microscopy. In 4 cases, the minimal age of animals examined in this study was known. The IL were revealed in the dentine of 14 bats examined. The cementum of all animals was devoid of IL. The mean distance between the first and second juxtaposed IL ofM. daubentonii was 3.2 ± 0.2 mm, but it was significantly fewer among the subsequent adjacent lines. Due to a thinness of the IL, an accurate counting was considerably difficult in the canines containing more than 10 IL, as well as in the incisors and postcanine teeth with more than 3-6 IL. The IL of roots showed the most contrast, but they were almost obscured from view at the cingulum and crown. In bats of known-age, the numbers of IL were significantly lower than minimal age of those animals examined, and IL were either revealed only in certain teeth or absent entirely in all teeth. The present findings suggest that the number of the IL varies in different teeth and is strongly dependent on section level. Consequently, age determination in small bats using dental IL is doubtful and requires a reevaluation.  相似文献

Determination of age from cemental incremental lines was evaluated in intact teeth obtained from 17 individuals aged 23-77 years. Mineralized 100 μm cross sections were subjected to one of three treatments: unstained, stained with Villanueva's blood stain, and stained with acridine orange. Ideal areas were selected by light microscopy and photographed. Countability of incremental lines from photographic enlargements were evaluated. The average number of years required for the eruption of a particular tooth was added to the incremental lines count to determine the estimated age for that individual. Results obtained from unstained mineralized 100 μm thick cross sections using differential interference microscopy (Nomarsky) provided the most countable lines. The accuracy and repeatability of the method is not dependent on tooth type or location, but on the average obtained from making as many counts as possible. This method can be applied to general populations regardless of systemic or periodontal health.  相似文献

In order to investigate tooth development, several cell lines of the dental epithelium and ectomesenchyme have been established. However, no attempt has been reported to regenerate teeth with cell lines. Here, we have established several clonal cell lines of the dental epithelium from a p53-deficient fetal mouse. They expressed specific markers of the dental epithelium such as ameloblastin and amelogenin. A new method has been developed to bioengineer tooth germs with dental epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Reconstructed tooth germs with cell lines and fetal mesenchymal cells were implanted under kidney capsule. The germs regenerated teeth with well-calcified structures as seen in natural tooth. Germs without the cell lines developed bone. This is the first success to regenerate teeth with dental epithelial cell lines. They are useful models in vitro for investigation of mechanisms in morphogenesis and of cell lineage in differentiation, and for clinical application for tooth regeneration.  相似文献

Age determination methods using teeth are described for African buffalo in Matusadona National Park, Kariba, Zimbabwe. Tooth eruption stages and age classes for sub-adult animals were established by reference to a seasonal breeding peak and known dates of death. Teeth in adult animals were allocated age classes based on wear using measurements of crown height and by reference to previously published material. Layering in the dental cement indicated the deposition of one cementum line per annum and line counts were used to assign chronological ages to individual animals. Regressions of wear on age were confirmed by independent counts of cementum lines using a predictive wear model.  相似文献

A radiographic method is presented which estimates the age at death from the diaphyseal length of a child's long bone or bones. Mean lengths are calculated from adult males and females separately in the skeletal population under study, and the child's age derived from the proportion of adult length attained at his or her death. The calculations come from double logistic curves originally derived from a sample of Colorado children (McCammon, 1970). In radiographs of immature or adult long bones, similar equations are based on the location of the center of ossification, from which distances to transverse lines yield estimated ages when these lines were formed. In a population, ages at death, ages of attainment of transverse lines, and ages when anomalous enamel is laid down in teeth are all contributions to paleopathology and paleodemography. These equations can predict when spaced transverse lines were annually formed. If such spaced lines can be seen in radiographs of early fossil hominids, their spacing can distinguish between short childhood, as in apes, and the longer immature developmental span found in modern children.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to estimate the eruption age of wisdom teeth in the North Nigerian population. The present study was carried out on 654 boys and 584 girls of age groups ranging from 11-23 years. From the data collected estimates have been provided for the eruption age of the third molar. In general, teeth of the lower jaw erupt before those of the upper jaw. The teeth on the left side erupt earlier than those on the right side. The wisdom teeth erupt little earlier amongst boys (18 years) as compared with girls (18.5 years). In general, the wisdom teeth erupt in Nigerians with some constancy between the age of 15 and 21. The wisdom teeth fail to erupt in 5% of the individuals.  相似文献

We developed an age determination method for larval and newly metamorphosed post-larval abalone Haliotis discus hannai in a laboratory experiment and determined the age of field caught individuals. Laboratory experiments showed that competent veliger larvae (4 days after fertilization) had a radula and regularly added rows of radular teeth with age in the absence of metamorphosis. Under environmentally relevant temperatures (17-22 °C), the number of rows of radular teeth increased linearly with age, but slopes of the regression lines were different among temperatures. Rows of radular teeth were added more slowly at lower temperatures. The effect of temperature on the development rate of the radula was quantified by the regression and the temperature coefficient, Q10. The radular development of newly metamorphosed post-larvae, which had not acquired a peristomal shell (adult shell), was comparable with that of veliger larvae, although older post-larvae had a larger number of rows of radula than those of the same age of veliger larvae. From these results, an age determination method of veliger larvae and newly metamorphosed post-larvae was established, using the number of rows of radular teeth. The age of veliger larvae and newly metamorphosed post-larvae was determined by the age determination method for samples collected in August to October of 2003 and 2004 for which the thermal history of the coastal water of Miyagi Prefecture Japan was available. Only 9.1% of veliger larvae (n = 8) captured in the field had formed a radula and these were estimated to be 4-6 days old. The remaining 90.9% of larvae (n = 80) that had not formed a radula were classified as younger than 4 days old. All newly metamorphosed post-larvae (n = 24) that had metamorphosed on substrata were estimated to be 4-6 days old. Results of the field study indicate that these abalone metamorphosed within a few days after the acquisition of competence (4 days after fertilization) at this site, which has suitable crustose algal habitat.  相似文献

Thirteen tooth eruption stages and their corresponding chronological ages are descri bed from a series of giraffe jaws. These can be used for age determination in giraffes with immature dentition. Significant correlations of the lingual crown height ( r =0-957; P < 0001) and lingual occlusal surface width ( r =0-959; P < 0001) with the number of dark staining incremental lines in the cementum of thin decalcified sections of the maxillary first molar were found. The regression equations derived from these relationships provide a further method for determining the age of a giraffe. A composite plate showing maxillary first molar wear patterns provides a means of roughly assigning an age to a particular specimen. Thin sections of undecalcified teeth, mandible measurements, various other indices of tooth wear and eye lens mass were investigated and found unsuitable for age determination in this  相似文献

Several complementary methods of age determination were investigated in the female Grant's gazelle from an equatorial latitude. It was found that, despite its probable year-round homeostasis, there was an average of two prominent lines per year visible in the tooth cementum, most consistent results being obtained from the incisor teeth. Tentative corroboration was afforded by a wear model based on decreasing molar height. The female carries continuously growing horns with a distinctive zone of retarded growth at the base in adults, but the extent of this zone was too variable for use in field age determination; and the disappearance of the black lateral band, distinctive in young animals, was not consistent with increasing age.  相似文献

对出自禄丰石灰坝的26个禄丰古猿下颌齿列的246枚恒齿进行了观察研究,发现禄丰古猿具有普遍的带状釉质发育不全(LEH)现象,个体LEH比例为100%,恒齿LEH比例为85%。乳齿几乎没有LEH现象,第一恒臼齿的LEH比例也很低仅57%。根据牙齿萌出顺序及现代大猿的牙齿发育年龄特征,作者推断2—3岁之前的幼儿古猿很少出现釉质发育不全现象,这可能与母体的营养关照有关。禄丰古猿的LEH的发生频率具有明显的季节性,结合中新世晚期气候变化特征、古猿的生态环境、生活习性及食性特征分析,作者推测:季节性营养不良可能是造成禄丰古猿釉质发育不全的主要原因。  相似文献

Objectives . To evaluate the attitudes to retaining natural teeth in an adult Swedish population, and to correlate the attitude to retaining natural teeth with some presumed influencing background factors. Design : Cross-sectional study using a newly developed questionnaire. Subjects : From the national census register of four municipalities in the southern part of the province of Halland, Sweden, with a total population of 126,878 adult (≥20 years) inhabitants, 4,200 persons were selected at random. The sample was randomised by age and sex, and 300 men and 300 women from the age groups 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 years were included. Intervention and main outcome measures : The questionnaire aimed to evaluate the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, the self-estimated quality of natural teeth, and the attitude t o retaining natural teeth In the studied population, and also to evaluate the possible correlation between those factors, in particular, the attitude to retaining natural teeth versus the other factors. Results : It was found that the attitude to the importance of retaining natural teeth was strongly correlated with the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, and the self-estimated quality of natural teeth. Also sex had an influence on this attitude but not age. Conclusions : The attitude to the importance of retaining natural teeth in an adult Swedish population is correlated with the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, the self-estimated quality of natural teeth, and sex, but not with age.  相似文献

Weaning conflict may represent an evolutionary conflict of interest between parent and offspring, an honest signal of need on the part of a weanling, or both. Accentuated lines visible in histological sections of teeth are indicators of stress during enamel formation and have been hypothesised to form in baboon teeth during weaning. We analysed growth increments in 5 tooth sections from 2 Ugandan baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis), using polarised light microscopy, to determine when stresses occurred during the weaning process. Dietary transitions were reconstructed using normalised strontium intensities (Sr/Ca) in enamel. Accentuated lines were cross-matched between teeth from the same animal and plotted by month. The highest frequency of stress was experienced at around 6 months in 1 baboon, coinciding with an inferred reduction in suckling frequency, and at 11 months in another, coinciding with the inferred cessation of suckling. Because accentuated lines appear to indicate weaning stress at dietary transitions, weaning conflict may represent an honest signal of need on the part of the weanling.  相似文献

We examined functional teeth (except for upper canine teeth) of Pacific walruses that died or were harvested on the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula in 2005, 2007–2008, and 2010–2011. The dynamics of deposition of annual cement layers was investigated. The rate of cement deposition on the walls of tooth roots decreased significantly with age. The rate of its deposition on the lingual side of the upper teeth was much higher than that on their buccal side, but no such differences were observed on the lower teeth. The same cement layer was deposited unevenly in different parts of teeth (on its different sides and levels) with a general tendency of increasing in the width of the layer from the top to the lower parts of teeth. As a result of local widening of some cement layers with age, the tooth surface became rough, and knolls and rollers appeared there. As the age increased, external changes in teeth occurred: they became larger, more rounded, and heavier. We described a method for the preliminary determination of the relative age of walruses based on the ratio between the width of cement and dentin on the attrition surface of lower teeth (without cutting).  相似文献

本文对广东罗定、云浮及广西等地的猩猩牙齿化石进行了宏观及微观的形态观察。认为猩猩牙齿咬合面除有较多的褶皱外,大多数标本上还有明显的生长线。化石猩猩牙齿与现生种的相比.牙齿的生长线后者不如前者显著;牙齿的大小是后者小于前者。这些现象表明Hooijer(1948)提出的 Pongo Pygmaeus weidenreichi可以成立。  相似文献
