Twenty one species of marine wood borers were recorded in this study. There are seventeen species of bivalves of which sixteen are from the family Teredinidae and one from the family Pholadidae. The crustaceans comprised the family Sphaeromatidae with three species and the family Limnoriidae with one species. Seven of the fourteen known genera of the teredinids were recorded. The bivalve wood borers were widely distributed in the local mangroves. Martesia striata was the most abundant wood borer at the Degaussing Range jetty, Lumut. Lyrodus pedicellatus was the most abundant shipworm in wooden panels. Shipworms were abundant on the subtidal panels where the genus Bankia, was most common while M. striata was abundant on the intertidal panels. M. striata numbers were higher on the top surfaces as compared to the under surfaces of wooden panels.  相似文献

Collections of the marine borer Limnoria spp. were obtained from blocks of wood at Sydney and wooden piles at Bowen, Queensland. While L. tripunctata Menzies was common on untreated Pinus radiata D. Don at Sydney and treated softwoods at Bowen, L. indica Becker & Kampf was generally the limnoriid species most frequently encountered on the outer heartwood of untreated turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera (Sm.) Niedenzu) at both sites, and on the sapwood of CCA-treated turpentine at Bowen. L. quadripunctata Holthuis was also more often found on turpentine at Sydney than L. tripunctata.  相似文献

For many species, seasonal changes in key environmental variables such as food availability, light, and temperature drive the timing (“phenology”) of major life‐history events. Extensive evidence from terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats shows that global warming is changing the timings of many biological events; however, few of these studies have investigated the effects of climate change on the phenology of larval recruitment in marine invertebrates. Here, we studied temperature‐related phenological shifts in the breeding season of the shipworm Teredo navalis (Mollusca, Bivalvia). We compared data for the recruitment period of T. navalis along the Swedish west coast during 2004–2006 with similar data from 1971–1973, and related differences in recruitment timing to changes in sea surface temperature over the same period. We found no significant shift in the timing of onset of recruitment over this ~30‐year time span, but the end of recruitment was an average of 26 days later in recent years, leading to significantly longer recruitment periods. These changes correlated strongly with increased sea surface temperatures and coincided with published thermal tolerances for reproduction in T. navalis. Our findings are broadly comparable with other reports of phenological shifts in marine species, and suggest that warmer sea surface temperatures are increasing the likelihood of successful subannual reproduction and intensifying recruitment of T. navalis in this region.  相似文献

Marine wood-borers of the Limnoriidae cause great destruction to wooden structures exposed in the marine environment. In this study we collated occurrence data obtained from field surveys, spanning over a period of 10 years, and from an extensive literature review. We aimed to determine which wood-boring limnoriid species are established in European coastal waters; to map their past and recent distribution in Europe in order to infer species range extension or contraction; to determine species environmental requirements using climatic envelopes. Of the six species of wood-boring Limnoria previously reported occurring in Europe, only Limnoria lignorum, L. quadripunctata and L. tripunctata are established in European coastal waters. L. carinata and L. tuberculata have uncertain established status, whereas L. borealis is not established in European waters. The species with the widest distribution in Europe is Limnoria lignorum, which is also the most tolerant species to a range of salinities. L. quadripunctata and L. tripunctata appear to be stenohaline. However, the present study shows that both L. quadripunctata and L. tripunctata are more widespread in Europe than previous reports suggested. Both species have been found occurring in Europe since they were described, and their increased distribution is probably the results of a range expansion. On the other hand L. lignorum appears to be retreating poleward with ocean warming. In certain areas (e.g. southern England, and southern Portugal), limnoriids appear to be very abundant and their activity is rivalling that of teredinids. Therefore, it is important to monitor the distribution and destructive activity of these organisms in Europe.  相似文献

The naval shipworm Teredo navalis The naval shipworm, scientifically named Teredo navalis, destructively tunnels into almost all wooden structures in marine coastal habitats causing enormous economic damage. Already the early sailors feared this animal, because it destroyed their wooden ships, and even today the naval shipworm is responsible for high maintenance costs of all wooden coastal protection and harbour infrastructure. Nevertheless, there are still many open questions concerning the biology and the biogeographic origin of this species. In the Baltic Sea, where timber is widely used in coastal protection, Teredo navalis is considered as invasive species. Until now the eastern distribution is restricted to the Island of Hiddensee, due to the low salinity in this part of the Baltic Sea. One of the most important questions, however, is whether and how the observed climate change will affect the distribution of Teredo navalis.  相似文献

Quick simple testing methods are needed to evaluate alternative wood materials for marine construction because traditional borer resistant materials are becoming scarce or are no longer permitted due to concerns over environmental emissions of preservatives. Laboratory tests can provide species-specific information on rates of wood biodeterioration by wood borers under optimum conditions, in contrast to field trials where more than one borer species may be present and conditions are variable.The methodology described herein relies on the assumption that faecal pellet production rate in limnoriids must match feeding rate quite closely. Thus, the number of faecal pellets produced by individual specimens of Limnoria quadripunctata, while feeding on a non-durable and non-toxic wood species – Pinus sylvestris sapwood – in different test conditions, was monitored over a period of 15 days. Mortality and moulting were also registered. Several variables likely to affect survival and feeding rates were investigated in order to optimise the test conditions. Temperature and salinity regime affected both survival and feeding rates while moulting cycle affected feeding rates.The optimisation of this test methodology aims to provide the basis for a standard laboratory test with the wood-boring crustacean Limnoria.  相似文献

The shipworm Teredo navalis L. is a xylophagous bivalve mollusc (Bivalvia: Teredinidae) with a long record of being very destructive to wooden ships and harbour buildings. It has been reported from numerous sites at the coasts of both the North and Baltic Seas since the eighteenth century. Here, we document for the first time the occurrence of live adult T. navalis in the harbours of Bremerhaven (Weser estuary, northern Germany). From August to December 1998, various wooden structures (fir floating fenders and pier posts, oak piles) from seven stations in different docks of two harbours (überseehafen, Fischereihafen) were investigated for the presence and density of live specimens and burrows of T. navalis. The settlement of larval shipworms was studied by exposing experimental fir panels 0.06 m2 in size at 20 stations at water depths between 1 and 2 m for periods of 4 months between July and November. In addition, hydrographic profiles (0–8 m water depth) were obtained at 17 stations in five docks once every month from August to December. Live adult shipworms were found in both fir floating fenders and oak piles at four stations. The largest specimen found was 250 mm long. Shipworm burrows were detected at five stations in almost every wooden structure investigated but their abundances differed significantly: Maximum values were >10,000 m–2 in fir floating fenders, 4,600 m–2 in oak piles and 200 m–2 in fir pier posts. Actual shipworm infestation was detected at three of 16 stations in the exposed fir panels (1–3 burrow holes per panel). Water temperatures and salinities varied considerably during the 4-month investigation period. Temperatures decreased from 19.9°C in August to 0.7°C in December. Salinities ranged from 17.6 in August to 1.1 in November, but only at two lock stations during November and December did value drop below 5, which is regarded as the lethal limit for the larvae of this euryhaline teredinid species. We conclude that T. navalis encounters favourable conditions for growth and reproduction in the harbours of Bremerhaven, at least during summer and autumn, and is a common element of the harbour ecosystem. Marine bivalves of the family Teredinidae (shipworms) are voracious consumers of wood in marine environments. In several shipworm species, dense communities of intracellular bacterial endosymbionts have been observed within specialized cells (bacteriocytes) of the gills (ctenidia). These bacteria are proposed to contribute to digestion of wood by the host. While the microbes of shipworm gills have been studied extensively in several species, the abundance and distribution of microbes in the digestive system have not been adequately addressed. Here we use Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) and laser scanning confocal microscopy with 16S rRNA directed oligonucleotide probes targeting all domains, domains Bacteria and Archaea, and other taxonomic groups to examine the digestive microbiota of 17 specimens from 5 shipworm species (Bankia setacea, Lyrodus pedicellatus, Lyrodus massa, Lyrodus sp. and Teredo aff. triangularis). These data reveal that the caecum, a large sac-like appendage of the stomach that typically contains large quantities of wood particles and is considered the primary site of wood digestion, harbors only very sparse microbial populations. However, a significant number of bacterial cells were observed in fecal pellets within the intestines. These results suggest that due to low abundance, bacteria in the caecum may contribute little to lignocellulose degradation. In contrast, the comparatively high population density of bacteria in the intestine suggests a possible role for intestinal bacteria in the degradation of lignocellulose.  相似文献

The most economically important wood boring Crustacea belong to the isopod families Sphaeromatidae and Limnoriidae, both of which have been recently revised and a number of new species have been recognised. Other wood boring crustaceans have now been recognised from tropical mangrove sites. Limnoriids are found from temperate to tropical waters, but appear to be restricted to waters with salinities close to that of seawater. Wood-boring species of Sphaeroma on the other hand can tolerate extremely low salinities, but are restricted to sub-tropical and tropical waters. Approaches to borer control that have proved effective against teredinids (use of naturally durable timber, copper-chrome-arsenic or creosote treatment, surface coatings) have been found under certain circumstances to be ineffective against Limnoria and Sphaeroma. A number of additives to conventional preservatives have been tested, with some insecticides showing evidence of enhancing Limnoria control. The question of crustacean borer nutrition may hold the key to problems of their control. Sphaeromatid borers are capable of filter-feeding and thus may never ingest the treatments applied to wood. Limnoriids do ingest wood, but the role of wood degrading tunneling bacteria, and soft-rotting ascomycete and deuteromycete fungi occurring in the wood they digest remains to be fully elucidated. The source or sources of wood-degrading enzymes that permit digestion of wood particles requires further investigation. The microecology of borer burrows has an important bearing on the availability of nitrogen for borers. Further insights into the problems posed by these borers may be obtained with a better understanding of their ecology. A better testing protocol for preservatives has been developed as a result of knowledge of the natural vertical distribution of Sphaeroma. Behavioural studies indicate that settlement on wood by Limnoria is enhanced by factors derived from conspecifics and from wood-inhabiting microorganisms.  相似文献

Four sites located in Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the French Mediterranean coast, were monitored during the summer of 2009 for the presence of epiphytic and planktonic Ostreopsis cf. ovata, and that of palytoxin (PlTX) and 2 of its analogues (ovatoxin-a (OVTX-a) and ostreocin-D (OST-D)) in different marine organisms.Several of the 15 species that were sampled between June and September 2009 were found to be contaminated with OVTX-a as the major toxin (90% of the toxin profile) and PlTX; this included fish, echinoderms, gastropods, crustaceans and cephalopods. The contamination levels varied geographically and between species, with the herbivorous species generally having higher toxin levels than carnivorous ones.The determination of the toxin distribution between the digestive tube (DT) and the remaining tissue (RT) or roe in the case of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus showed that the toxins were sequestered in the DT. The highest toxin level ever recorded over the course of the study was of 392.2 μg for the sum of OVTX-a and PlTX per kg of DT of the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus. No quantifiable levels of toxins were found in the roe of the sea urchins or in the RT of the other marine products. However, in several cases, the toxin level in the whole flesh of the analysed organisms was above 30 μg OVTX-a + PlTX/kg, when knowing that the European food safety authority's opinion is that an adult should not ingest more than 30 μg PlTX + OST-D per kg of shellfish meat to avoid putting the consumer's health at risk. This was observed for the following four species: the sea urchin P. lividus, the red-mouthed rock shell Stramonita haemastoma, the warty crab Eriphia verrucosa and the flathead mullet M. cephalus.The collection of such data is of great importance to refine and complete the risk assessment of PlTX and its analogues and has to be encouraged in order to provide reliable information for setting up a regulatory level that would protect the consumers of edible marine organisms  相似文献

Old hollow trees have declined in Europe and many saproxylic (i.e. wood-dwelling) invertebrates living on them are threatened. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent artificial habitats can be exploited by saproxylic beetles. To mimic the conditions in tree hollows, we constructed wooden boxes filled with different combinations of substrates like oak saw dust, oak leaves, a dead hen (Gallus domesticus), chicken dung, lucerne flour or potatoes and placed them on tree trunks. To investigate the importance of distance from dispersal sources, we placed boxes at different distances (0–1,800 m) from three species-rich sites with high densities of hollow oaks. Over 3 years, 3,423 specimens of 105 saproxylic beetle species were caught in 47 boxes. Among beetles found in hollow oaks that were either tree-hollow species, bird nest species, or wood rot species, 70% were also found in the boxes. A dead hen added to the artificial wood mould gave a higher number of beetle specimens. The number of species associated with tree hollows in oak decreased with distance from sites with hollow oaks. In conclusion, the prospects for using artificial environments for boosting substrate availability, or to fill spatial and temporal gaps therein, for saproxylic beetles are good.  相似文献

We employed DNA barcodes for identification of fungal species in marine sediments. Sediments were collected seasonally along the Southeast coast of India from which a culturable fungal library was constructed. All cultured species were morphologically documented using microscopical analysis. A maximum population density of 19.3 × 103 CFU/g was recorded in monsoon and minimum of 3 × 103 CFU/g in premonsoon season. Two-way analysis of variance suggests that the fungal community varied significantly between the seasons (F = 9.543, P < 0.001) and at various depths sampled (F = 4.655, P < 0.05). In total, 54 fungal species belonging to 13 different families were documented and all species were sequenced for internal transcribed spacer genes. Each species was represented by at least two specimens constituting a total of 171 specimens for DNA barcoding. Twelve species of a marine fungi were sequenced for the first time. Branching patterns of phylogenetic tree strongly supported the sequence variations within and between all species barcoded. Based on the pairwise distance model we suggest barcode gaps of 15 %, 21 %, 30 %, 35 % and 51 % for genera, family, order, class and phyla respectively.  相似文献

Abstract:The lichen flora associated with twenty saline lagoons in England is described. Though often scarce, lichens were present on shingle, miscellaneous stones, half-submerged concrete structures, retaining walls, salt marsh vegetation, wooden posts, and strand-line materials. Sites that had been modified by the activity of man often held richer assemblages than ones in a more natural condition. The lichen flora is a mixture of common-place species and maritime specialists. The large lagoon behind Chesil Beach, known as ‘The Fleet’, was the most important site surveyed. Many of the marine lichens present are typical of very sheltered coastlines. Caloplaca suaedae, found at two sites, is described as new to science.  相似文献

The shipworm, Teredo navalis, is absent from most of the Baltic Sea. In the last 20 years, increased frequency of T. navalis has been reported along the southern Baltic Sea coasts of Denmark, Germany, and Sweden, indicating possible range-extensions into previously unoccupied areas. We evaluated the effects of historical and projected near-future changes in salinity, temperature, and oxygen on the risk of spread of T. navalis in the Baltic. Specifically, we developed a simple, GIS-based, mechanistic climate envelope model to predict the spatial distribution of favourable conditions for adult reproduction and larval metamorphosis of T. navalis, based on published environmental tolerances to these factors. In addition, we used a high-resolution three-dimensional hydrographic model to simulate the probability of spread of T. navalis larvae within the study area. Climate envelope modeling showed that projected near-future climate change is not likely to change the overall distribution of T. navalis in the region, but will prolong the breeding season and increase the risk of shipworm establishment at the margins of the current range. Dispersal simulations indicated that the majority of larvae were philopatric, but those that spread over a wider area typically spread to areas unfavourable for their survival. Overall, therefore, we found no substantive evidence for climate-change related shifts in the distribution of T. navalis in the Baltic Sea, and no evidence for increased risk of spread in the near-future.  相似文献

In this publication, we review the biology, ecology, invasion history, impacts and management options of Emerald ash borer (EAB) Agrilus plannipennis, with a particular focus on its invasion in Europe. Agrilus planipennis (EAB) is a wood‐boring beetle native to East Asia. Having caused massive damages on ash species in North America in the last decades, it was first recorded in Europe in 2003 in Russia (Moscow). All ash (Fraxinus) species native to Europe and North America are known to be susceptible to EAB attacks, which cause high tree mortality even among formerly healthy trees. Recorded expansion rates are between 2.5 and 80 km/year in North America and between 13 and 41 km/year in European Russia. Given current expansion rates, EAB is expected to reach Central Europe within 15–20 years. A combination of mechanical, biological and chemical control and phytosanitary measures may reduce its impact, which nevertheless most likely will be substantial. There is an urgent need to identify native enemies in Europe, to test suitable biocontrol agents and to develop early detection and management measures. Although it is obvious that EAB will become a major pest in Europe, early and dedicated response will likely be able to reduce the level of ash mortality, and thus improve the opportunity for long‐term survival of ash as an important component in European forests.  相似文献

Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi (K. mikimotoi) have occurred frequently in the East China Sea in recent decades and were responsible for massive mortalities of abalones in Fujian coastal areas in 2012, however, little is known about the effects of these blooms on other marine organisms. In this study, the toxic effects and the possible mechanisms of toxicity of K. mikimotoi from Fujian coastal waters on typical marine organisms at different trophic levels, including zooplankton (Brachionus plicatilis, Artemia salina, Calanus sinicus, and Neomysis awatschensis) and aquaculture species (Penaeus vannamei and Scophthalmus maximus) were investigated. At a bloom density of 3 × 104 cells/mL, the Fujian strain of K. mikimotoi significantly affected the tested organisms, which had mortality rates at 96 h of 100, 23, 20, 97, 33, and 53%, respectively. Moreover, the intact cell suspension was toxic to all tested species, whereas cell-free culture and the ruptured cell suspension had no significant effects on the tested organisms. Possible mechanisms for this toxic effect, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hemolytic toxins, were evaluated. For K. mikimotoi, 0.014 ± 0.004 OD/(104 cells) superoxide (O2) and 3.00 ± 0.00 nmol/(104 cells) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were measured, but hydrogen peroxide did not affect rotifers at that concentration, and rotifers were not protected from the lethal effects of K. mikimotoi when the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase were added to counteract the ROS. The lipophilic extract of K. mikimotoi had a hemolytic effect on rabbit erythrocytes but exhibited no significant toxicity. These results suggest that this strain of K. mikimotoi can have detrimental effects on several typical marine organisms and that its toxicity may be associated with intact cells but is not related to ROS or hemolytic toxins.  相似文献

Beauveria bassiana is an important entomopathogenic fungus with widespread application in the biological control of harmful insect pests. This species is widely distributed as an anamorph while only two teleomorph specimens have been found in eastern China. However, little is known about the ecological conditions for sexual reproduction in natural populations of B. bassiana. Here, we collected 488 isolates of Chinese B. bassiana sensu stricto from five sites, in which teleomorph or anamorph occurred, and used molecular phylogenetic and haplotype information to determine phylogenetic diversity, mating types, and sexual reproductive potential in these populations. Molecular identification based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and combined data of the nuclear intergenic region Bloc and translation elongation factor-1a (TEF) assemblage resolved five B. bassiana s.s phylogenetic species labeled according to their geographic origin: Europe/N. Africa 1, Asia 3, Asia 4, AFNEO_1, and N. America 2. In Guniujiang and Manshuihe collection sites, teleomorph isolates RCEF 0771 and RCEF 0382 were both identified as Europe/N. Africa 1 phylogenetic species. In addition, more than half of the isolates in five representative sites belonged to Europe/N. Africa 1. However, the teleomorph of B. bassiana s.s. was not detected in Kuankuoshui while isolates within Europe/N. Africa 1 were present at this site, and isolates belonging to Europe/N. Africa 1 were not found in either Jingyuetan or Dinghushan collection sites. Distribution of MAT1 and MAT2 mating type idiomorphs in Europe/N. Africa 1 were 51:69, 37:24, and 15:15 in Guniujiang, Manshuihe, and Kuankuoshui, respectively. The presence of teleomorph and roughly equal frequencies of opposite mating types indicate regular sexual reproduction in B. bassiana natural populations. The data offer a better understanding of the ecological conditions of sexual reproduction in natural populations of B. bassiana. These results also yield insights into the potential for sexual reproduction in other supposedly ‘asexual’ fungi.  相似文献

Marine fishes represent the important components of the diet in the coastal areas of China and they are also natural hosts of various parasites. However, to date, little is known about the occurrence of ascaridoid parasites in the frequently consumed marine fishes in China. In order to determine the presence of ascaridoid parasites in the frequently consumed marine fishes in the coastal town Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China, 211 fish representing 45 species caught from the South China Sea (off Daya Gulf) were examined. Five species of ascaridoid nematodes at different developmental stages were detected in the marine fishes examined herein, including third-stage larva of Anisakis typica (Diesing, 1860), third and fourth-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium sp. IV-A of Shamsi, Gasser & Beveridge, 2013, adult and third-stage larvae of Hysterothylacium zhoushanense Li, Liu & Zhang, 2014, adults and third-stage larvae of Raphidascaris lophii (Wu, 1949) and adults of Raphidascaris longispicula Li, Liu & Zhang, 2012. The overall prevalence of infection is 18.0%. Of them, Hysterothylacium sp. IV-A with the highest prevalence (17.5%) and intensity (mean = 14.6) of infection was the predominant species. The prevalence and intensity of A. typica were very low (1/211 of marine fish infected with an intensity of one parasite per fish). The morphological and molecular characterization of all nematode species was provided. A cladistic analysis based on ITS sequence was constructed in order to determine the phylogenetic relationships of these ascaridoid parasites obtained herein. The present study provided important information on the occurrence and diagnosis of ascaridoid nematodes in the commercially important marine fishes from the South China Sea. The low level of infection and the species composition of ascaridoid nematodes seem to indicate the presence of low risk of human anisakidosis when local population consumed these marine fishes examined herein.  相似文献

Developing networks of no-take marine reserves is often hindered by uncertainty in the extent to which local marine populations are connected to one another through larval dispersal and recruitment (connectivity). While patterns of connectivity can be predicted by larval dispersal models and validated by empirical methods, biogeographic approaches have rarely been used to investigate connectivity at spatial scales relevant to reserve networks (10's–100's of km). Here, species assemblage patterns in coral reef fish were used together with an individual-based model of dispersal of reef fish larvae to infer patterns of connectivity in a ∼300 km wide region in the Philippines that included the Bohol Sea and adjacent bodies of water. A dominant current flows through the study region, which may facilitate connectivity among >100 no-take reserves. Connectivity was first investigated by analysing data on the presence/absence of 216 species of reef fish and habitat variables across 61 sites. Hierarchical clustering of sites reflecting species assemblage patterns distinguished a major group of sites in the Bohol Sea (Bray–Curtis similarity >70%) from sites situated in adjacent bodies of water (bays, channels between islands and a local sea). The grouping of sites could be partly explained by a combination of degree of embayment, % cover of sand and % cover of rubble (Spearman rank correlation, ρw = 0.42). The individual-based model simulated dispersal of reef fish larvae monthly for three consecutive years in the region. The results of simulations, using a range of pelagic larval durations (15–45 days), were consistent with the species assemblage patterns. Sites in the model that showed strongest potential connectivity corresponded to the majority of sites that comprised the Bohol Sea group suggested by hierarchical clustering. Most sites in the model that exhibited weak connectivity were groups of sites which had fish assemblages that were least similar to those in the Bohol Sea group. Concurrent findings from the two approaches suggest a strong influence of local oceanography and geography on broad spatial patterns of connectivity. The predictions can be used as an initial basis to organise existing reserves to form ecologically meaningful networks. This study showed that species assemblage patterns could be a viable supplementary indicator of connectivity if used together with predictions from a larval dispersal model and if the potential effect of habitat on the structuring of species assemblages is taken into consideration.  相似文献

Submerged wood, wood trapped amongst rocks, sand-buried wood and exposed roots and branches of shoreline trees were collected from three intertidal beach sites in the Seychelles. These were examined for the presence of marine fungi, the species present identified and their frequency of occurrence noted. Leaves, seaweeds and seagrasses washed up on the seashore, and seafoam, were also examined for filamentous marine fungi. Species present are listed with their frequency of occurrence. Differences in species composition from one substratum to the next were noted, and the results discussed. Sixty-three species were collected: 35 Ascomycotina, 2 Basidiomycotina and 26 Deuteromycotina, all are new records for the Seychelles. The mycogeography and ecological niche of the fungi encountered are discussed.  相似文献
