European agri-environment schemes encourage farmers to establish sown field margin strips to protect and enhance wild plant diversity. However, plant diversity in such wild plant sowings based on seed mixtures is often low due to the high competitiveness of few, common species. Here we analysed whether intraspecific aggregation could enhance the performance of less competitive species, and how plant performance is influenced by the number of species in a mixture. We focused on inter- and intraspecific competition between six agricultural wild plant species (Centaurea cyanus, Calendula arvensis, Melilotus officinalis, Poa annua, Bromus mollis, Medicago lupulina), and tested (i) two different seeding patterns (intraspecifically aggregated vs. randomly dispersed) and (ii) three different species mixtures (monocultures, three-species, and six-species mixtures). Plant performance was measured in terms of number of individuals, biomass per individual, and biomass per m2. Intraspecific aggregation resulted in higher numbers of individuals of all species, while mixtures generated lower numbers of individuals. The performance of plant species differed depending on their position in the competitive hierarchy. Competitively weak species suffered much less from intraspecific than interspecific competition in terms of biomass, and the competitively weakest species became even excluded in the most species rich and randomly dispersed sowings with high interspecific competition. In conclusion, the performance of wild plant species was influenced by both seeding pattern and number of species in a mixture. Intraspecific aggregation enabled the coexistence of competitively weak species by reducing interspecific competitive exclusion processes. Consequently, agri-environmental schemes designed to preserve and enhance biodiversity should consider small-scale processes influencing the distribution and abundance of plants, and develop new agricultural sowing technologies to cultivate competitively weak and endangered wild plant species.

Abstract The spatial distributions of most species are aggregated to varying degrees. A limited number of studies have examined the effects of spatial aggregation on interspecific and intraspecific interactions, generally finding that spatial aggregation can enhance coexistence between species by reducing the capacity for interspecific competition. Less well studied are the effects of spatial aggregation on complementarity (i.e. differences in resource use strategies) and resource use. Our primary hypothesis was that spatial aggregation reduces the complementarity between species owing to: (i) less interspecific interactions as a result of spatial separation; and (ii) less differences between species as a result of phenotypic plasticity. We further postulate that these negative effects of spatial aggregation on complementarity will reduce resource use by the community. Here we test these hypotheses in a pot experiment in which we applied three levels of spatial aggregation to three sets of two‐species mixtures of herbaceous perennial plant species from native grasslands of south‐eastern Australia. Both root and shoot biomass were significantly affected by spatial aggregation, although the nature of these affects depended upon the species involved, and the relative strengths of interspecific versus intraspecific competition. Complementarity between species in the distribution of their green leaves decreased significantly as spatial aggregation increased for one of the species mixtures, providing some evidence in support of our hypothesis that aggregation reduces complementarity through phenotypic plasticity. Spatial aggregation also altered light interception and use of soil moisture resources, although these effects were dependent on the species involved. We suggest that clear effects of spatial aggregation on complementarity and resource use may be obscured by the idiosyncratic way in which neighbour identity influences plant growth and hence plant size, limiting the ability to generalize, at the community level, any underlying effects of spatial pattern on ecological process.

To evaluate oxidative stress and the plant antioxidant system of Alternanthera philoxeroides [Mart.] Griseb and Oryza sativa L. in the response to drought, root and leaf tissues of drought-treated A. philoxeroides and O. sativa were collected and relative water content, stomatal conductance, the concentrations of malondialdehyde, proline and the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidases, catalase and total antioxidative activity investigated. The results showed that drought treatment had almost no effect on relative water content in A. philoxeroides but reduced relative water content in O. sativa. A. philoxeroides maintained a greater stomatal conductance than O. sativa under drought stress. In A. philoxeroides levels of lipid peroxidation were lower than in O. sativa and did not change during the experiment. After exposure to drought, concentrations of proline and activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidases and catalase in A. philoxeroides were between 10% and 30% higher than in O. sativa, whereas total antioxidative activity in A. philoxeroides was several-fold higher than in O. sativa.

There is a need for an appropriate evaluation of Hemarthria germplasm resources using genetic analysis. Understanding their genetic background will promote effective development and utilization of its germplasm resources in plant breeding. We examined the genetic diversity and relationships among 46 Hemarthria germplasm resources from four continents. Expressed Sequence Tags-Simple Sequence Repeat (EST-SSR) and Start Codon Targeted (SCoT) markers were used to investigate species Hemarthria altissima (36), Hemarthria compressa (8) and Hemarthria uncinata (2). We selected 19 EST-SSR primers and generated 550 polymorphic (94.7%). Twenty one SCoT primers were selected and amplified to produce 597 bands with 89.4% of polymorphic bands. The Mantel test between EST-SSR and SCoT matrices revealed significant correlations (r = 0.854) and the data from both markers were combined for cluster analysis. The 46 materials were clustered into two main groups by UPGMA clustering with a similarity coefficient ranging from 0.573 to 0.940 and the dendrogram was basically concordant with geographical origins and species. Among the three Hemarthria species, H. altissima was genetically closest to H. compressa while it was not close to H. uncinata. When the utility of the two markers were compared, we found EST-SSR to be more efficient than SCoT in determining the genetic diversity study of Hemarthria species.

Stabilization and variation of floral structures are indispensable for plant reproduction and evolution; however, the developmental mechanism regulating their structural robustness is largely unknown. To investigate this mechanism, we examined positional arrangement (aestivation) of excessively produced perianth organs (tepals) of six- and seven-tepaled (lobed) flowers in six Anemone species (Ranunculaceae). We found that the tepal arrangement that occurred in nature varied intraspecifically between spiral and whorled arrangements. Moreover, among the studied species, variation was commonly limited to three types, including whorls, despite five geometrically possible arrangements in six-tepaled flowers and two types among six possibilities in seven-tepaled flowers. A spiral arrangement, on the other hand, was unique to five-tepaled flowers. A spiral phyllotaxis model with stochasticity on initiating excessive primordia accounted for these limited variations in arrangement in cases when the divergence angle between preexisting primordia was less than 144°. Moreover, interspecific differences in the frequency of the observed arrangements were explained by the change of model parameters that represent meristematic growth and differential organ growth. These findings suggest that the phyllotaxis parameters are responsible for not only intraspecific stability but interspecific difference of floral structure. Decreasing arrangements from six-tepaled to seven-tepaled Anemone flowers demonstrate that the stabilization occurs as development proceeds to increase the component (organ) number, in contrast from the intuition that the variation will be larger due to increasing number of possible states (arrangements).

The success of plant invasions may be limited by the availability of propagules and/or of suitable microsites, with microsite availability being affected by, for example, disturbance and interspecific competition. A mechanistic understanding of the contributions of propagule pressure and microsite limitation to plant invasions is therefore required to minimise future invasions. Here, we investigated the relative roles of propagule pressure, the availability of microsites, and their interaction on the establishment of an invasive herb, Lupinus polyphyllus, in two geographic regions representing different climate and growth conditions in Finland (a more productive southern region and a harsher central region). We carried out a field experiment in 14 L. polyphyllus populations, in which we manipulated both propagule pressure and disturbance. In a complementary greenhouse experiment, we manipulated propagule pressure and interspecific competition. Seedling establishment of L. polyphyllus was higher in the more productive southern region than in the harsher central region. The number of L. polyphyllus seedlings increased with increasing propagule pressure regardless of disturbance or interspecific competition. However, the number of L. polyphyllus seedlings per sown seed (relative establishment) tended to decrease with increasing propagule pressure, indicating that the positive effect of propagule pressure on early invasion is partially counteracted by density-dependent mortality at high seed densities. Our results highlight the dominant role of propagule pressure over disturbance and interspecific competition in the establishment of L. polyphyllus, suggesting that the early stage of invasion is limited by the availability of propagules rather than the availability of suitable microsites.

Prior studies on preferences of native herbivores for native or exotic plants have tested both the enemy release hypothesis and the biotic resistance hypothesis and have reported inconsistent results. The different levels of resistance of native and exotic plants to native herbivores could resolve this controversy, but little attention has been paid to this issue. In this study, we investigated population performance, photosynthesis, leaf nitrogen concentration, and the constitutive and induced resistances of the successful invasive plant, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and its native congener, Alternanthera sessilis, in the presence of three population densities of the grasshopper, Atractomorpha sinensis. When the grasshopper was absent, leaf biomass, total biomass, photosynthesis, and leaf nitrogen concentration of A. philoxeroides were higher than those of A. sessilis. However, the morphological and physiological performances of A. philoxeroides were all decreased more intensively than A. sessilis after herbivory by grasshoppers. Especially as the concentrations of constitutive lignin and cellulose in leaf of A. philoxeroides were higher than A. sessilis, A. philoxeroides exhibited increased leaf lignin concentration to reduce its palatability only at severe herbivore load, whereas, leaf lignin, cellulose, and polyphenolic concentrations of A. sessilis all increased with increasing herbivory pressure, and cellulose and polyphenolic concentrations were higher in A. sessilis than in A. philoxeroides after herbivory. Our study indicated that the capability of the invasive plant to respond to native insect damage was lower than the native plant, and the invasive plant was suppressed more intensively than its native congener by the native insect. Our results support the biotic resistance hypothesis and suggest that native herbivores can constrain the abundance and reduce the adverse effects of invasive species.

Corals rely on stored reserves, especially lipids, to survive bleaching events. Lipid class composition reveals the lipid source, and provides evidence of metabolic changes (i.e., photoautotrophic or heterotrophic) during bleaching and recovery. Porites compressa Dana, 1846 and Montipora capitata Dana, 1846 corals were experimentally bleached in outdoor tanks with seawater temperature elevated to 30 °C (treatment corals). Additional control fragments were maintained in separate tanks at ambient temperatures (27 °C). After one month, all fragments were returned to the reef for 0, 1.5, 4, or 8 months. Lipid class composition was analyzed by Iatroscan (thin layer chromatography-flame ionization detection). In treatment P. compressa, triacylglycerol (TG) decreased at 0 and 1.5 months, phospholipid (PL) also decreased at 1.5 months, and both remained lower relative to controls along with wax esters (WE) after 8 months. Neither treatment nor control P. compressa had any detectable monoacylglycerol (MG) or diacylglycerol (DG). Overall, P. compressa first consumed available storage, then structural lipids, and all lipid classes remained low at the end of the study. In treatment M. capitata, TG and PL decreased, while MG increased relative to controls at 0 months. At 4 months, free fatty acid (FFA), sterol (ST), and PL in treatment M. capitata were two to ten times higher than controls. Treatment and control lipid class composition were not different from each other at 8 months. In contrast to P. compressa, M. capitata consumed some lipid classes and augmented others, probably due to sequential metabolism of storage lipids and increased heterotrophy. Overall, lipid class assimilation was more rapid in treatment M. capitata corals that switch between heterotrophy and photoautotrophy, than in treatment P. compressa corals that rely mostly on photoautotrophy.

The novel associations between invasive plants and their natural enemies in the introduced range have recently received increasing attention; however, the effects of novel enemies on exotic plant performance and competition with native species remain poorly explored. Here, we tested the impact of herbivory by a native beetle, Cassida piperata, on the performance of the exotic species Alternanthera philoxeroides and competition with a native congener, Alternanthera sessilis, using common garden experiments in central China. We found A. philoxeroides was able to fully compensate for intense herbivory by C. piperata. Herbivory by C. piperata that released at the average density in this region had no impact on competition between the native and exotic plant species. Our results indicate that herbivory by novel enemies may not reduce exotic plant performance due to plant compensation. However, high tolerance to herbivory may not confer a competitive advantage for exotic species compared to less tolerant native competitors if the herbivore damage is below a certain threshold. Thus, it is necessary to assess the impact of novel enemies on exotic plant performance and competition with native plants along gradients of insect densities. This may lead to a better understanding of how best to exploit the role of native herbivores in facilitating or slowing plant invasions.

Relatively few studies have compared invasibility and species invasiveness among microhabitats within communities, synchronously. We surveyed the abundance and performance of non-native Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. (alligator weed), its co-occurring native congener, Alternanthera sessilis (L.) DC. (sessile joyweed), and other species in a wetland community along a riparian zone in southeast China to test the hypotheses that: i) degree of invasion differs between different types of microhabitats within the community; and ii) microhabitat types that differ in invasibility also differ in soil resource availability or in sediment characteristics likely to affect resource availability; iii) phenotypic plasticity of A. philoxeroides may play a key role in its adaptation to diverse habitats as can be concluded from its extremely low genetic diversity in China. The study riparian zone comprises different types of microhabitats including wet abandoned field, swamp, marsh dunes and gravel dunes. Consistent with these hypotheses, cover of A. philoxeroides was high in abandoned fields (73 ± 2.9%) and swamps (94 ± 1.3%), which had high soil nutrients and water availability. On the contrary, cover of native A. sessilis was relatively high in marsh dunes and grave dunes, which had coarse gravel surfaces, low soil nutrients and low water availability. A. philoxeroides showed greater morphological plasticity in response to habitat variation. In abiotically harsh habitats, stems had limited growth, and were prostrate with weak adventitious roots at nodes, forming thin, scattered patches. In the two richer habitats, the highly branched plants spread over the water or soil surface, supporting dense stronger leaf-bearing stems which grew vertically. The growth pattern of A. sessilis among microhabitats did not exhibit significant variations. These results suggest that morphological plasticity and microhabitat types with high soil resources may facilitate invasions of A. philoxeroides.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can influence plant nutrient uptake and, therefore, may alter interspecific plant competition. However, the role of AM fungi in subtropical tree competition is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of AM fungus identity (four species) and diversity (a mixture of the same four species) on the competitive relationships between seedlings of a pioneer tree Rhus chinensis and a late-pioneer tree Celtis sinensis, and between R. chinensis and a mid-successional tree Cinnamomum camphora. In seedlings, AM fungi significantly promoted a competitive advantage of R. chinensis over both Ce. sinensis and Ci. camphora. Furthermore, the extent to which AM fungi affected interspecific plant competition outcomes was dependent on AM fungus identity, and the effect of AM fungus diversity on interspecific competition outcomes may derive from the most beneficial AM fungal species.

  • Highly biodiversity communities have been shown to better resist plant invasions through complementarity effects. Species richness (SR) is a widely used biodiversity metric but lacks explanatory power when there are only a few species. Communities with low SR can have a wide variety of phylogenetic diversities (PD), which might allow for a better prediction of invasibility.
  • We assessed the effect of diversity reduction of a wetland community assemblage typical of the Beijing area on biotic resistance to invasion of the exotic weed Alternanthera philoxeroides and compared the reduction in SR and PD in predicting community invasibility.
  • The eight studied resident species performed similarly when grown alone and when grown in eight‐species communities together with the invasive A. philoxeroides. Variation partitioning showed that PD contributed more to variation in both A. philoxeroides traits and community indicators than SR. All A. philoxeroides traits and community indicators, except for evenness index, showed a linear relationship with PD. However, only stem length of A. philoxeroides differed between the one‐ and two‐species treatments, and the diversity index of the communities differed between the one‐ and two‐species treatments and between the one‐ and four‐species treatments.
  • Our results showed that in natural or semi‐natural wetlands with relatively low SR, PD may be a better predictor of invasibility than SR. When designing management strategies for mitigating A. philoxeroides invasion, deliberately raising PD is expected to be more efficient than simply increasing species number.

Aconophora compressa Walker (Hemiptera: Membracidae) was released in 1995 against the weed lantana in Australia, and is now found on multiple host plant species. The intensity and regularity at which A. compressa uses different host species was quantified in its introduced Australian range and also its native Mexican range. In Australia, host plants fell into three statistically defined categories, as indicated by the relative rates and intensities at which they were used in the field. Fiddlewood (Citharexylum spinosum L.: Verbenaceae) was used much more regularly and at higher densities than any other host sampled, and alone made up the first group. The second group, lantana (Lantana camara L.: Verbenaceae; pink variety) and geisha girl (Duranta erecta L.: Verbenaceae), were used less regularly and at much lower densities than fiddlewood. The third group, Sheena’s gold (another variety of D. erecta), jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don: Bignoniaceae) and myoporum (Myoporum acuminatum R. Br.: Myoporaceae), were used infrequently and at even lower densities. In Mexico, the insect was found at relatively low densities on all hosts relative to those in Australia. Densities were highest on L. urticifolia, D. erecta and Tecoma stans (L.) Juss. ex Kunth (Bignoniaceae), which were used at similar rates to one another. It was found also on a few other verbenaceous and non-verbenaceous host species but at even lower densities. The relative rate at which Citharexylum spp. and L. urticifolia were used could not be assessed in Mexico because A. compressa was found on only one plant of each species in areas where these host species co-occurred. The low rate at which A. compressa occurred on fiddlewood in Mexico is likely to be an artefact of the short-term nature of the surveys or differences in the suites of Citharexylum and Lantana species available there. These results provide further incentive to insist on structured and quantified surveys of non-target host use in the native range of potential biological control agents prior to host testing studies in quarantine.

Understanding how grazing activity drives plant community structure or the distribution of specific species in a community remains a major challenge in community ecology. The patchiness or spatial aggregation of specific species can be quantified by analyzing their relative coordinates in the community. Using variance and geostatistical analysis methods, we examined the quantitative characteristics and spatial distribution of Stipa breviflora in a desert steppe in northern China under four different grazing intensities (no grazing, NG, light grazing, LG, moderate grazing, MG, and heavy grazing, HG) at three small spatial scales (10 × 10 cm, 20 × 20 cm, 25 × 25 cm). We found that grazing significantly increased cover, density, and proportion in standing crop of Sbreviflora, but decreased height. The spatial distribution of S. breviflora was strongly dependent upon the sampling unit and grazing intensity. The patchiness of S. breviflora reduced with sampling scale, and spatial distribution of S. breviflora was mainly determined by structural factors. The intact clusters of S. breviflora were more fragmented with increasing grazing intensity and offspring clusters spread out from the center of the parent plant. These findings suggest that spatial aggregation can enhance the ability of S. breviflora to tolerate grazing and that smaller isolated clusters are beneficial to the survival of this dominant species under heavy grazing.

Individual plant species distribute according to their own spatial pattern in a community. In this study, we proposed an index for measuring the spatial heterogeneity in mass (dry weight) of individual plant species. First, we showed that the frequency distributions for mass of individual plant species per quadrat in a plant community are expressed using the gamma distribution with two parameters of λ (mean) and p. The parameter p is a measure indicating the level of spatial heterogeneity of plant mass as follows: (1) when p = 1, the plant mass per quadrat has a random pattern; (2) when p > 1, the plant mass has a spatial pattern with a lower heterogeneity than would be expected in the random pattern; and (3) when p < 1, the plant mass has a spatial pattern with a higher heterogeneity than would be expected in the random pattern. The p value for a given species can easily be calculated by the following equation if we use the moment method: (mean plant mass among quadrats)2 / (variance of plant mass among quadrats). The scatter diagram of (λ, p) for individual plant species, exhibits the spatial characteristics of each species in the community. We illustrated two examples of the (λ, p) diagram from data for individual species composing actual communities in a semi-natural grassland and a weedy grassland. Frequency distributions for the plant mass of individual species per quadrat followed the gamma distribution, and indi vidual species exhibited an inherent level of spatial heterogeneity.

Intertidal macroalgae can modulate their biophysical environment by ameliorating physical conditions and creating habitats. Exploring how seaweed aggregations made up of different species at different densities modify the local environment may help explain how associated organisms respond to the attenuation of extreme physical conditions. Using Silvetia compressa, Chondracanthus canaliculatus, and Pyropia perforata, we constructed monocultures representing the leathery, corticated and foliose functional forms as well as a mixed tri‐culture assemblage including the former three, at four densities. Treatment quadrats were installed in the intertidal where we measured irradiance, temperature, particle retention, and water motion underneath the canopies. Additionally, we examined the abundance and richness of the understory microphytobenthos with settlement slides. We found that the density and species composition of the assemblages modulated the amelioration of extreme physical conditions, with macroalgal aggregations of greater structural complexity due to their form and density showing greater physical factor attenuation. However, increasing the number of species within a patch did not directly result in increased complexity and therefore, did not necessarily cause greater amelioration of the environment. Microphytobenthic composition was also affected by species composition and density, with higher abundances under S. compressa and C. canaliculatus canopies at high and mid densities. These results support the idea that the environmental modifications driven by these macroalgae have a significant effect on the dynamics of the intertidal environment by promoting distinct temporal and spatial patchiness in the microphytobenthos, with potentially significant effects on the overall productivity of these ecosystems.

Spatial structural patterns emerging from local tree interactions influence growth, mortality and regeneration processes in forest ecosystems, and decoding them enhance the understanding of ecological mechanisms affecting forest regeneration. Point-Patterns analysis was applied for the very first time to mangrove ecology to explore the spatial structure of Rhizophora mucronata regeneration in a disturbed mangrove forest; and the pattern of associations of juvenile–adult trees. R. mucronata trees were mapped in plots of 50 m × 10 m located at the seaward, central and landward edge along 50 m wide transect in the forest, and the mapped patterns were analysed with pair correlation and mark-connection functions. The population density of R. mucronata differed along the tidal gradient with the highest density in the central region, and the least near the shoreline. The study revealed that short distance propagule dispersal, resulting in the establishment of juveniles in closed distance to the mother trees, might not be the driving force for distribution of this species. The spatial structural pattern of R. mucronata population along tidal gradient showed a characteristic spatial aggregation at small scale, but randomly distributed as the distances become larger. There was a distinct spatial segregation between recruits and adult trees, and hence spatially independent. Though, adult–adult trees associations did not show a clear spatial segregation pattern; the recruit–recruit species associations exhibited significant clustering in space. Although habitat heterogeneity might be responsible for the local scale aggregation in this population, the effect of plant–plant conspecific interactions is more probable to inform the long-term structure and dynamics of the population of R. mucronata, and ditto for the entire forest.
