Egg age preference, competitive ability, and behavior of Gonatocerus tuberculifemur (‘new association’ parasitoid) and Gonatocerus ashmeadi (‘old association’ parasitoid) were investigated in the laboratory to determine if one species exhibited competitive superiority. When searching concurrently for Homalodisca vitripennis egg masses, G. ashmeadi consistently outperformed G. tuberculifemur by parasitizing 25–53% more eggs under three different experimental systems in the laboratory with varying host densities, egg ages, and exposure times. G. ashmeadi parasitism in control vials containing one parasitoid ranged from 81–97% across all egg ages. G. tuberculifemur in control vials parasitized 60–66% of eggs 1 and 3 days old, and just 18% of eggs 5 days old. G. ashmeadi produced 5–16% more female offspring than G. tuberculifemur for all experimental conditions. In comparison to G. ashmeadi, G. tuberculifemur was observed off leaves with host eggs 20% more frequently and it oviposited 15% less frequently. G. ashmeadi and G. tuberculifemur when confined together allocated ∼1% of behaviors to antennating or aggressively chasing competitors off egg masses, and up to 2% of behaviors to antennating host egg masses and/or ovipositing into eggs from the opposite side of the leaf. These latter behaviors did not occur when parasitoids were confined alone with host eggs.  相似文献

Egg maturation and oosorption in Gonatocerus ashmeadi were investigated in the laboratory and the relationship between hind tibia length (HTL) and <12 h egg load, and wing wear and parasitoid age were determined. G. ashmeadi given access to honey-water and hosts, on average, matured 77 eggs in excess of those they were born with. The number of mature eggs in female G. ashmeadi provided honey-water with no hosts significantly declined after 163 degree-days eggs, while the number of ‘dissolved’ eggs (partially disintegrated mature eggs) increased by nine eggs after 163 degree-days. These results are consistent with oosorption. There was a significant positive correlation between HTL and <12 h egg load. The ovigeny index (the number of mature eggs at female emergence divided by potential lifetime fecundity) for G. ashmeadi was calculated as 0.22 indicating that this parasitoid is a syn-ovigenic species when studied under laboratory conditions. There was a significant positive correlation between wing wear (measured as the number of broken setae per wing) and parasitoid age in the laboratory. The practical implications of these results for G. ashmeadi on the biological control of Homalodisca vitripennis are discussed.  相似文献

Buckwheat is of high value in crop rotations and overall agricultural ecology because of strong rooting and intensive flowering properties, but it is rarely cultivated and information on its nutritional value to ruminants is scarce. The contents of net energy for lactation (NEL), as estimated with the Hohenheim Gas Test (n = 3), were 4.3, 4.9 and 7.5 MJ NEL/kg dry matter (DM) for fresh and ensiled whole buckwheat plants and buckwheat grain, respectively. In two experiments with the Rumen Simulation Technique (Rusitec), ruminal fermentation characteristics of buckwheat forages and buckwheat grain (n = 4/diet) were evaluated. In the first experiment, 0, 300 or 600 g/kg of a pure hay diet were replaced by either fresh or ensiled buckwheat to create five diets. Neither form of buckwheat forages had effects on in vitro ruminal degradability and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations and composition. The use of fresh buckwheat reduced ruminal ammonia concentrations and enhanced estimated microbial N growth efficiency. These differences did not occur with silage, indicating a change in nutritional value by ensiling. Fresh buckwheat reduced the number of bacteria in the incubated fluid, while ensiled buckwheat reduced that of holotrich protozoa. Methane formation was not influenced by the buckwheat forages. In the second experiment, wheat meal (400 g/kg dietary DM), was replaced stepwise (0.5 and 1.0) by buckwheat grain meal. This did not cause differences in parameters of nutrient degradability, relative N efficiency and total amount and composition of SCFA. Holotrich protozoa counts increased, but total gas formation decreased with increasing dietary level of buckwheat grain. In a final experiment, cows yielding about 40 kg milk/day were fed mixed silage-concentrate diets (n = 4). A control diet contained no buckwheat. In a second diet, maize silage was partly substituted by buckwheat silage (98 g/kg dietary DM). In a third group, part of the energy concentrate was substituted by buckwheat grain meal (94 g/kg). There were no effects on feed intake, milk yield and milk composition. Buckwheat proved to be a plant that offers different feeds of a quality sufficient to be considered suitable in ruminant nutrition.  相似文献

In support of an ongoing study to evaluate potential farmscaping plants for utilization in organic vegetable production systems, we examined the effects of the nectar of three flowering plant species, sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), buckwheat (Fagopyrum sagittatum), and licorice mint (Agastache foeniculum), on the lifespan and body nutrient levels of the wasp, Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a key parasitoid of some caterpillar pests of vegetable crops in the USA. The greatest longevity (~16 days) was recorded for honey-fed wasps (positive control). Buckwheat significantly increased the lifespan of female and male wasps by at least two-fold relative to wasps provided water only (longevity = 3–4 days). Licorice mint significantly increased female longevity and numerically increased male longevity. Sweet alyssum slightly increased longevity of both sexes but this was not significantly different from the water only control. Females had a significantly longer longevity than males on all the diet treatments. The greatest carbohydrate nutrient levels (sugar content and glycogen) were recorded in honey-fed wasps followed by wasps fed buckwheat, whereas very little nutrients were detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum, licorice mint or water only. However, female wasps were observed to attempt to feed on all three flowering plant species. Thus, the low nutrient levels detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum or licorice mint may be because the nectars were not accessible or were of poor quality. Further studies will evaluate the effects of the promising farmscaping plants on the beneficial and pest insect communities in the field.  相似文献

The glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (= H. coagulata [Say]) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), was a major exotic pest in French Polynesia until a classical biological control program against this pest was conducted using the host-specific egg parasitoid Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae). After risk assessment studies indicated an acceptably low potential threat to non-target species, parasitoids were released on Tahiti in May 2005. One year after release, populations of H. vitripennis had decreased by more than 90% in Tahiti and nearby Moorea. Here we present results of impact studies obtained during the second post-release year for G. ashmeadi in Tahiti and Moorea; we also report for the first time on results for eight other H. vitripennis infested islands located in three different archipelagos (Society, Marquesas, and Austral) of French Polynesia. On all infested islands across the three archipelagos, arrival of G. ashmeadi slashed H. vitripennis densities by more than 95%. In Tahiti and Moorea, H. vitripennis populations were maintained at very low densities during the second post-release year. Seasonal fluctuations of H. vitripennis abundance were observed in Tahiti with pest populations being more abundant during the cooler dry season than during the warmer wet season because of lower parasitism rates. Hence, similar seasonal fluctuations of H. vitripennis abundance are expected across all infested archipelagos in French Polynesia.  相似文献

The availability of plant resources to omnivorous arthropod predators may have a positive, negative or negligible effect on their population densities and predation rates, depending on the availability of prey. At high prey densities, flowering buckwheat has been shown to negatively impact populations of the brown lacewing, an omnivorous predator, due to the probable increase in parasitism rate of lacewing larvae by their primary parasitoid, Anacharis zealandica. However, little is known about the effect of buckwheat flowers on this insect community at low prey densities. We used field cages to assess the effects of nectar provision by flowering buckwheat on the population dynamics of the pea aphid, the brown lacewing and its parasitoid A. zealandica in an alfalfa field, under low aphid densities in the New Zealand summer. The insects were sampled every 2 weeks with a suction device, then counted and released on each sampling date from 15 January to 15 March 2007. Buckwheat significantly increased lacewing populations and significantly decreased aphid numbers by 70% and 39%, respectively. The buckwheat had its greatest effect at the end of summer (February/March) for both these species. It had no effect on A. zealandica abundance.  相似文献

A community of insect herbivores has established on eucalyptus species in California following their introduction from Australia. A number of the species are under complete or partial biological control. A response to introduction of additional pest species into the complex has been the application of systemic insecticides to infested trees. Natural enemies that have been introduced to control the various pest species feed on the nectar of treated trees, and thus may be affected by these pesticides. In this study, Eucalyptus rudis trees were treated at label rates with the neonicotinoid systemic insecticide imidacloprid and nectar sampled at 5 months post-treatment during the spring bloom. The concentration of imidacloprid and its toxic metabolites in nectar was measured by ELISA at 660 ppb. Adults of the encyrtid egg parasitoid Avetianella longoi that were fed floral nectar collected from treated trees had significantly lower survival and reproductive fitness than adults fed nectar from untreated trees. In feeding bioassays, in which the adults were fed a range of concentrations of imidacloprid in sugar water, the LC50 for A. longoi was 212 ppb imidacloprid. Bioassays were also conducted with the braconid larval parasitoid, Syngaster lepidus. The LC50 for S. lepidus was 288 ppb imidacloprid. The insecticide appears to be concentrating in the nectar at higher levels than reported from other plant species and at concentrations exceeding the LC50 for two important parasitoids. If tree treatments become widespread as a result of continual introductions of new eucalypt herbivores, established biological control programs could be at significant risk.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the development (egg–adult emergence) of Gonatocerus morgani Triapitsyn, a newly-described parasitoid of Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), were determined at 14.8, 18.7, 23.5, 26.9, 28.7, 30.4, 32.8, and 33.8 °C in the laboratory. Survival rate (percent adult emergence from parasitized host eggs) varied significantly among the experimental temperatures, with the highest (59%) and lowest (0%) occurring at 30.4 and 33.8 °C, respectively. The survival rates (%) were fitted with a polynomial model to describe a temperature-dependent pattern. Developmental rates (1/d) across seven temperatures were fitted with the nonlinear Briere model, which estimated the lower threshold to be 8.06 °C, the optimal temperature to be 29.22 °C, and the upper threshold to be 33.49 °C. A linear model fitted to developmental rates at 14.8–28.7 °C indicated that 189.75 degree-days above the lower threshold of 9.71 °C were required to complete development. A simulation model of G. morgani adult emergence was constructed to predict daily counts over the entire range of constant temperatures by incorporating the survival rate model, the Briere model, and the Weibull model. In outdoor validation, a degree-day model for predicting adult emergence showed ?2 d differences between prediction and observation. Based on the observed temperature requirement, the insect could complete thirteen to sixteen generations per year in southern California, depending on weather and location.  相似文献

Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (=H. coagulata [Say]) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) invaded French Polynesia in 1999. A classical biological control program against H. vitripennis was initiated in 2004 aiming to introduce the exotic egg parasitoid Gonatocerus ashmeadi (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) to the Society Islands archipelago. Prior to any release, two risks were assessed: (a) continued uncontrolled H. vitripennis spread and proliferation in French Polynesia, and (b) non-target impacts by G. ashmeadi on indigenous French Polynesian cicadellids. The primary risk of H. vitripennis is its potential to vector the lethal plant bacterium, Xylella fastidiosa. While the presence of X. fastidiosa in French Polynesia has not yet been demonstrated, the presence of uncontrolled H. vitripennis greatly elevates the risk of a disease outbreak and thus represents a major threat for numerous plant species. Assessing the risk of G. ashmeadi introduction for native cicadellids first required an inventory of the Cicadellidae of the Society Islands, resulting in at least 14 cicadellid species (nine not previously recorded). The risk to these species of attack by G. ashmeadi was assessed using four criteria: (1) their phylogenetic relationships to known hosts of G. ashmeadi, and their similarity in (2) body size, (3) egg laying biology, and (4) ecology. All indigenous cicadellid species found were considered to be at low risk of attack because they differed greatly from all known hosts for G. ashmeadi: (1) none of the indigenous species are in the tribe Proconiini, (2) all were very small and, when possible to determine, (3) lay tiny single eggs, which (4) are deposited on the undersides of leaves of trees. These results persuaded the French Polynesian Government that the benefits of establishing G. ashmeadi for H. vitripennis control outweighed the serious potential risks associated with either delaying release or not releasing G. ashmeadi in French Polynesia. Releases of G. ashmeadi in Tahiti began in May 2005.  相似文献

The southern ladybird (Cleobora mellyi Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a voracious predator of the invasive tomato–potato psyllid (TPP) (Bactericera cockerelli Hemiptera: Triozidae) in New Zealand. We examined important aspects of the southern ladybird’s ecology to obtain further insight into its potential as a biocontrol agent of TPP in potato crops. We found that the southern ladybird did not prefer TPP over either Myzus persicae Sulzer or Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas in choice tests, but avoided consumption of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood). Ladybird longevity was tested under the conditions of low prey provision, a floral resource (buckwheat), and a combination of buckwheat and low density of TPP, over a 3 month period. There was no difference in longevity between ladybirds supplied with TPP only or buckwheat only. However, those with access to TPP and buckwheat lived longer than those with only TPP. In a glasshouse microcosm study, the ladybird was able to significantly reduce TPP densities after 3 weeks, and maintain the reduced numbers for 7 weeks. A species-level trophic cascade was found for both number and weight of potato tubers. These results indicate that the southern ladybird has potential as a biological control agent of the invasive tomato–potato psyllid in New Zealand.  相似文献

Background: Hepatoblastoma is a malignant embryonal tumor typically diagnosed in children younger than five years of age. Little is known on hepatoblastoma etiology. Methods: We matched California Cancer Registry records of hepatoblastomas diagnosed in children younger than age 6 from 1988 to 2007 to birth records using a probabilistic record linkage program, yielding 261 cases. Controls (n = 218,277), frequency matched by birth year to all cancer cases in California for the same time period, were randomly selected from California birth records. We examined demographic and socioeconomic information, birth characteristics, pregnancy history, complications in pregnancy, labor and delivery, and abnormal conditions and clinical procedures relating to the newborn, with study data taken from birth certificates. Results: We observed increased risks for hepatoblastoma among children with low [1500–2499 g, Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.29–3.15] and very low birthweight (<1500 g, OR = 15.4, 95% CI 10.7–22.3), preterm birth <33 weeks (OR = 7.27, 95% CI 5.00, 10.6), small size for gestational age (OR = 1.75, 95% CI 1.25–2.45), and with multiple birth pregnancies (OR = 2.52, 95% CI 1.54–4.14). We observed a number of pregnancy and labor complications to be related to hepatoblastoma, including preeclampsia, premature labor, fetal distress, and congenital anomalies. Conclusion: These findings confirm previously reported associations with low birthweight and preeclampsia. The relation with multiple birth pregnancies has been previously reported and may indicate a relation to infertility treatments.  相似文献

Egg age preference, competitive ability, and behavior of Gonatocerus deleoni (‘new association’ parasitoid) and G. ashmeadi (the co-evolved dominant parasitoid in California) were investigated in the laboratory to determine whether one species exhibited competitive superiority. When searching concurrently for Homalodisca vitripennis egg masses, G. ashmeadi consistently outperformed G. deleoni by parasitizing 59–89% more eggs under three different experimental systems in the laboratory with varying host densities, egg ages, and exposure times. G. ashmeadi parasitism in control vials containing one parasitoid ranged from 58 to 86% and was up to 28% higher at egg ages 1 and 3 days compared with 5 days. G. deleoni in control vials parasitized on average 7% of H. vitripennis egg masses in 1 h regardless of egg age. G. deleoni failed to parasitize H. vitripennis egg masses in 15 min when caged alone or in competition with G. ashmeadi. In a combined species treatment, parasitism by G. ashmeadi was 11% higher when H. vitripennis eggs were exposed for 5 days compared with 24 h. Conversely parasitism by G. deleoni was 5% lower for this comparison. G. ashmeadi had a significantly female biased sex ratio for all three experimental designs, whereas, G. deleoni offspring sex ratio was not significantly greater than 50%. In comparison to G. ashmeadi, behavioral observations indicated that G. deleoni was absent from host egg infested leaves 53% more frequently and it oviposited 66% less frequently. No incidences of females aggressively chasing competitors off H. vitripennis egg masses were recorded during this study.  相似文献

Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-dwelling, insect-transmitted, gamma-proteobacterium that causes diseases in many plants, including grapevine, citrus, periwinkle, almond, oleander, and coffee. X. fastidiosa has an unusually broad host range, has an extensive geographical distribution throughout the American continent, and induces diverse disease phenotypes. Previous molecular analyses indicated three distinct groups of X. fastidiosa isolates that were expected to be genetically divergent. Here we report the genome sequence of X. fastidiosa (Temecula strain), isolated from a naturally infected grapevine with Pierce's disease (PD) in a wine-grape-growing region of California. Comparative analyses with a previously sequenced X. fastidiosa strain responsible for citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) revealed that 98% of the PD X. fastidiosa Temecula genes are shared with the CVC X. fastidiosa strain 9a5c genes. Furthermore, the average amino acid identity of the open reading frames in the strains is 95.7%. Genomic differences are limited to phage-associated chromosomal rearrangements and deletions that also account for the strain-specific genes present in each genome. Genomic islands, one in each genome, were identified, and their presence in other X. fastidiosa strains was analyzed. We conclude that these two organisms have identical metabolic functions and are likely to use a common set of genes in plant colonization and pathogenesis, permitting convergence of functional genomic strategies.  相似文献

Orexin A and B, also termed hypocretin 1 and 2, are associated with the stimulation of food intake and arousal. The biological actions of the hormones are mediated via two distinct G protein-coupled receptors, termed orexin receptor 1 (OX1R) and orexin receptor 2 (OX2R). OX1R is selective for orexin A and OX2R binds orexin A and orexin B with similar affinity. The present study analyzed mRNA and protein expressions of OX1R and OX2R in adenohypophysis (AP) and neurohypophysis (NP) of cycling pigs. The tissue samples were harvested on days 2–3, 10–12, 14–16, and 17–19 of the oestrous cycle. Using quantitative real-time PCR higher OX1R gene expression was detected in AP on days 2–3 relative to days 10–12, 14–16 and 17–19 (p < 0.05). In NP the OX1R mRNA level was elevated on days 10–12 compared to the remaining stages (p < 0.05). OX2R gene expression in AP was the lowest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05 compared to days 2–3 and 17–19) and the expression peak occurred on days 17–19 (p < 0.05 vs. the all studied stages). In NP the highest (p < 0.05) expression of OX2R mRNA was noted on days 17–19 in relation to the remaining periods. OX1R protein content in AP was greatest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05), whereas in NP it was greatest on days 2–3 and 14–16 (p < 0.05 vs. days 10–12 and 17–19). In both cases the lowest OX1R protein expression was observed during follicular phase (p < 0.05 in relation to three remaining studied stages). OX2R protein in AP was lower (p < 0.05) on days 2–3 and 14–16 compared to days 10–12 and 17–19. In NP the lowest (p < 0.05) expression of this protein was on days 17–19 and the highest on days 10–12 (p < 0.05 compared to days 2–3 and 17–19). In summary, the present findings provide the first evidence that OX1R and OX2R mRNAs and proteins occur in the pituitary of the pig and indicate the dependence of orexin receptor expression on the endocrine reproductive state.  相似文献

Xylella fastidiosa is the causative agent of Pierce’s Disease of grape. No published record of X. fastidiosa genetics in Texas exists despite growing financial risk to the U.S. grape industry, a Texas population of the glassy-winged sharpshooter insect vector (Homalodisca vitripennis) now spreading in California, and evidence that the bacterium is ubiquitous to southern states. Using sequences of conserved gyrB and mopB genes, we have established at least two strains in Texas, grape strain and ragweed strain, corresponding genetically with subsp. piercei and multiplex, respectively. The grape strain in Texas is found in Vitis vinifera varieties, hybrid vines, and wild Vitis near vineyards, whereas the ragweed strain in Texas is found in annuals, shrubs, and trees near vineyards or other areas. RFLP and QRT PCR techniques were used to differentiate grape and ragweed strains with greater efficiency than sequencing and are practical for screening numerous X. fastidiosa isolates for clade identity.  相似文献

The contribution of a bee plant species to honey production depends on the plant’s nectar secretion quality and quantity, which is mainly governed by biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of the current study, was to investigate the nectar secretion dynamics and honey production potential of 14 major bee plant species of the target area. We examined the quantity and dynamics of nectar sugar per flower five times a day using a nectar sugar washing technique and direct measuring of nectar with calibrated capillary tubes. The average nectar sugar amount of the species varied from 0.41 mg/flower to 7.7 mg/flower (P < 0.0001). The honey sugar per flower was used to extrapolate the honey production potential per plant and per hectare of land. Accordingly the honey production potential of the species observed to vary from 14 kg/hectare in Otostegia fruticosa to 829 kg/hectare in Ziziphus spina-christi. The nectar secretion dynamics of the species generally showed an increasing trend early in the morning, peaking toward midday, followed by a decline but different species observed to have different peak nectar secretion times. Generally, the tree species secreted more nectar sugar/flower than the herbs. The nectar secretion amount of the species was positively correlated with the ambient temperature, indicating the adaptation of the species to hot climatic conditions. However, different species were observed to have a different optimum temperature for peak nectar secretion. Despite the limited rainfall and high temperature of the area, many plants were found to have good potential for honey production. The monetary value of honey per hectare of the studied honeybee plant species can be of equal or greater than the per-hectare monetary value of some cultivated crops that require numerous inputs. In addition, the information generated is believed to be useful in apiary site selection and to estimate the honey bee colony carrying capacity of an area.  相似文献

Decomposition of senesced culm material of two bulrush species was studied in a surface-flow ammonia-dominated treatment wetland in southern California. Decomposition of the submerged culm material during summer months was relatively rapid (k = 0.037 day−1), but slowed under extended submergence (up to 245 days) and during fall and spring sampling periods (k = 0.009–0.014 day−1). Stepwise regression of seasonal data indicated that final water temperature and abundance of the culm-mining midge, Glyptotendipes, were significantly associated with culm decomposition. Glyptotendipes abundance, in turn, was correlated with water quality parameters such as conductivity and dissolved oxygen and ammonia concentrations. No differences were detected in decomposition rates between the bulrush species, Schoenoplectus californicus and Schoenoplectus acutus.  相似文献

‘Bois noir’ is a phytoplasma-mediated grapevine yellows disease that causes great economic damage in European vineyards. Previous studies have examined habitat relationships on a regional scale, which help to better understand the large-scale epidemiology. Local drivers, such as micro-habitat preferences of the vector (Hyalesthes obsoletus, a cixiid planthopper), or local interactions with reservoir host plants, however, are still poorly understood, although this knowledge is crucial for developing site-specific management strategies. Here, we examined the local environment-species relationships of a phytoplasma-mediated grapevine disease on a scale of 15 m in a 2.9 ha vineyard using: (i) data on elevation and habitat types; (ii) cover of host plants Urtica dioica and Convolvulus arvensis over three seasons, (iii) vector monitoring over four seasons; (iv) genetic tests for phytoplasma presence in the vector; and (v) inspection of 6056 grapevine plants for visual symptoms of the ‘bois noir’ disease. The data were analyzed in a joint causal model that describes the interplay between vector, pathogen, disease and environment, estimated with Bayesian inference. Our results indicate that surrounding natural and semi-natural vegetation (fallow land, forest and managed agricultural land) and high density of the major host plant U. dioica are associated with an increase in vector population densities. Higher vector population densities at low availability of U. dioica were associated with higher phytoplasma infection rates in the vector. The prevalence of disease symptoms in grapevine plants was nonetheless more affected by grapevine cultivar and higher elevation than by the estimated availability of infected vectors. The results of our local analysis support current bois noir management recommendations stating that (1) removal of the host plant U. dioica should be best carried out in either spring or autumn; and (2) grapevine cultivars are unequally susceptible. Moreover, we provide evidence that U. dioica control before the flight period may result in low U. dioica densities and high H. obsoletus population densities, causing an increase in vector infection rates and disease pressure.  相似文献

The effects of floral nectar resources on ecosystem function were investigated by examining the consequences of increasing habitat complexity in field microcosms on the dynamics of a four-trophic-level community, consisting of lucerne (alfalfa), a herbivore (the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum), its parasitoid (Aphidius ervi) and a hyperparasitoid (Dendrocerus aphidum). The influence of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) flowers on the parasitism and hyperparasitism by A. ervi and D. aphidum, respectively, was compared with buckwheat-free treatments. Experimental units for this study were 1.8×1.8×2 m3 steel-framed cages covered with a fine mesh. Parasitism and hyperparasitism rates were significantly higher in the presence of flowering buckwheat. Parasitism rates by A. ervi were lower but not significantly, in the presence of D. aphidum in buckwheat and buckwheat-free treatments. A. pisum density was significantly reduced by A. ervi when buckwheat was present, but the density of the aphid was not affected by the hyperparasitoid. The parasitoid's potential to reduce the host population was, therefore, significantly influenced by the presence of floral nectar. Although hyperparasitism rates were significantly increased by buckwheat, this did not ‘cascade’ to the second trophic level, the pea aphid. However, before floral resources are deployed in agro-ecosystems to enhance biological control of pests, the influence of flowers on the second and fourth trophic levels should always be considered.  相似文献
