ABSTRACT. Females of the flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata Parker, produce an increasingly higher number of diapausing progeny in successive broods. Though a maternal effect completely eliminates the capacity for diapause in the first brood of females with an embryonic and larval history of short day, diapause is restored at low levels in later broods. Exposure to long daylength at the onset of adult life does not alter the diapause response of later broods, thus suggesting that the age effect cannot be modified by daylength manipulation. The age response implies that changes in maternal physiology exert an important regulatory control on the diapause fate of the pupa.  相似文献

Abstract. To determine whether the capacity of diapausing pupae of the flesh fly ( Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart) to absorb water from drier air than non-diapausing pupae is due to a simple passive process, we examined water flux in empty puparia. Empty puparia from both types of fly absorb and lose water passively, but those from diapause pupae do so to a lesser degree. The impervious nature of such puparia is attributed to an extra layer of cuticular wax not found in the non-diapause group.  相似文献

Flesh flies that have experienced pupal diapause produce progeny that will not enter diapause even when reared in a strongly diapause-inducing environment. The effect is determined, not by diapause itself, but by the short days previously received by the larvae during the programming of pupal diapause. Reciprocal cross matings indicate that the effect is transmitted solely by the female parent. Though the embryos develop within the uterus of the female, the maternal effect is transmitted prior to the onset of embryogenesis, probably during oögenesis. Only by rearing a generation in long-day (nondiapausing) conditions can the capacity for pupal diapause be restored in the progeny. The effect is likely to provide an adaptive mechanism for preventing an untimely diapause response among the progeny of overwintering females that emerge early in the spring.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In the Drosophila auraria complex (D. auraria Peng, D. biauraria Bock & Wheeler, D. triauraria Bock & Wheeler, D. quadraria Bock & Wheeler and D. subauraria Kimura), D. triauraria from the island of Yaku (30.3N in latitude) and D. quadraria from Taiwan (24.1N) had no or weak diapause, while strains of all the four species from the main islands of Japan had a firm reproductive diapause. These strains entered diapause at short daylengths and the critical daylength was longer and the incidence of diapause higher at a low rather than high temperature. In each species, the critical daylength was longer in strains from higher latitudes. Among sympatric populations of different species, D. subauraria always had the longest critical daylength, while D. auraria had the shortest one. The populations of D. biauraria and D. triauraria had longer critical daylengths than the sympatric populations of D. auraria , but this difference became smaller northwards. Since a longer critical daylength induces diapause earlier in autumn, D. subauraria would enter diapause earliest among these species, and D. auraria would do so latest. The late start of diapause in D. auraria may be related to its adaptation to domestic environments. On the other hand, the adaptive significance of the late start of diapause in northern populations of D. biauraria and D. triauraria is not clear.  相似文献

Abstract:  Diapause induction and photoperiodic response curves were determined for 33 strains of Tetranychus pueraricola derived from kudzu vine at three constant temperatures (15, 18 and 20°C) under a short-day condition (10 : 14 h; light : dark). Females of all but one of the strains entered diapause at all three temperatures with little variation in diapause percentages among the strains. The exception was the southernmost strain, which was found to be a non-diapause (ND) strain. The critical photoperiod gradually decreased towards the south at a rate of about 1 h for each 5 degrees of latitude. The diapause strains (D1 and D2) exhibited 100% diapause, whereas the ND strain exhibited 0% diapause. By crossing these strains, we determined that 'non-diapause' was a dominant character over 'diapause' and the character was controlled by simple Mendelian inheritance. To clarify why the female progeny from the crosses between the D1 and ND strains did not segregate into the diapause and non-diapause phenotypes in a 1:1 ratio in the B1 generation, round-robin crosses were carried out among the three strains. The results showed that the F1 generation was reproductively compatible and showed high egg hatchability with a female-biased sex ratio. In the B1 generation, the crosses between the D1 and ND strains and between the D1 and D2 strains exhibited extremely low egg hatchability and produced mostly female progeny, whereas offspring from the crosses between the D2 and ND strains showed more than 50% hatchability for B1 eggs and a female-biased sex ratio. Thus, the absence of segregation observed in the crosses between the D1 and ND strains appears to be due to the severe hybrid breakdown that occurred in the B1 generation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Deuterium oxide averts pupal diapause in the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart when fed to larvae or when applied topically to photosensitive embryos exposed to short daylength. Deuterium oxide was not effective in promoting diapause when presented to embryos or larvae reared at long daylength. The effect of deuterium oxide appears to be cumulative in the larval state: increasing exposure time progressively reduces diapause response. If flies reared on deuterium oxide are exposed to continuous darkness, the diapause response remains high, thus implying that the physiological capacity for diapause is not disrupted. We suggest that deuterium oxide exerts its effect on the circadian rhythm controlling diapause induction.  相似文献

Abstract.  The effect of photoperiod on pupariation time and the ability to secrete ecdysteroids by the larval ring gland of the flesh fly, Boettcherisca peregrina , are compared among three tropical non-diapausing colonies, Bp (forest), Bp (Luwuk) and Bp (NC) and one temperate diapausing colony of Bp (Tokyo). Non-diapausing colonies do not enter diapause under any photoperiod at 20°C, whereas the Bp (Tokyo) diapausing colony enters diapause at the pupal stage under a short-day photoperiod. The times required for 50% pupariation of Bp (forest), Bp (Luwuk) and Bp (Tokyo) are 34 h, 36 h 20 min and 34 h 40 min under short days (SD), respectively. However, Bp (NC) pupariates in a much shorter time (26 h 10 min) compared with the others. The 50% pupariation times of Bp (NC), Bp (forest) and Bp (Tokyo) under long days (LD) are 27 h, 25 h 50 min and 26 h 40 min, respectively. However, it is much longer in Bp (Luwuk) at 53 h 20 min. The rates of secretion of ecdysteroids by the larval ring glands in vitro in Bp (Tokyo) and Bp (forest) are six- to ten-fold higher under SD (6.00 and 3.69 ng) than under LD (0.60 ng), whereas the ring glands of Bp (Luwuk) and Bp (NC) secrete 3.06 and 8.25 ng ecdysteroids under LD and 5.18 and 10.53 ng under SD, respectively. These results suggest there are at least three different physiological types among non-diapausing colonies of B. peregrina : Bp (forest), Bp (Luwuk) and Bp (NC).  相似文献

Abstract Due to the risk of extinction and ornamental value of the swallowtail butterfly, Sericinus montelus Gray (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) in China, knowledge about local adaptations is important for the conservation and economical utilization of the species. In the present study, photoperiodic diapause induction and diapause intensity of S. montelus populations from Jiamusi (46°37′N), Beijing (40°15′N), Zibo (36°48′N), Fangxian (32°36′N), Wuhan (30°33′N) and Huaihua (27°33′N) were characterized at 25°C. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant population × hours of light interaction, confirming that photoperiodic responses varied among populations. The critical photoperiod was positively correlated with latitude and increased toward the north at a rate of about 1 h for each 6.67 degrees of latitude. Survival analyses indicated that survival time of diapausing pupae before adult eclosion differed significantly among populations at 25°C and 16 : 8 L : D h. The mean duration of pupal diapause was also positively correlated with latitude. Our study reveals geographic variation in the critical photoperiod for diapause induction and in diapause intensity of S. montelus. These results provide useful information for our general understanding about seasonal adaptation in insects and may also be used to predict how geographic populations respond to climate warming.  相似文献

将棕尾别麻蝇Boettcherisca peregrina幼虫置于含800 μg/g CdCl2的食物中取食48 h后,可诱导金属硫蛋白(MT)的合成。诱导处理后的幼虫匀浆上清液经Sephadex G-50分子筛柱、UNOTM Q1阴离子交换柱和Bio-Gel P-6脱盐柱层析,纯化得到2个亚型,即MT-Ⅰ和MT-Ⅱ。MT-Ⅰ和MT-Ⅱ的分子量均为9 kD,每蛋白分子均含7个Cd和20个巯基,且具254 nm的Cd-SH特征吸收肩。两者的氨基酸组成中,以半胱氨酸含量最高,分别为36.6%和31.8%;而芳香族氨基酸和组氨酸含量甚少,约1%~2%。  相似文献

Larvae of Sarcophaga crassipalpis destined for pupal diapause (light:dark 12:12, 20°C) contain nearly twice as much lipid and twice the haemolymph protein concentration as larvae that will not enter diapause (light:dark 15:9, 20°C). This conspicuous difference in metabolic reserves provides the earliest indication of the developmental fate of the larva. Lipid reserves are utilized rapidly during the first half of diapause and then remain stable until adult eclosion. In contrast, residual dry weight changes very little early in diapause but drops sharply late in diapause, thus implying a transition from lipid utilization to protein or carbohydrate utilization in mid-diapause. We suggest that this metabolic transition marks the end of the “fixed latency period”: pupae readily respond to environmental or hormonal stimulation after this point. Diapause-destined larvae did not accumulate more glycogen than nondiapause-destined larvae, but an 80% decrease in glycogen at the onset of diapause and its elevation at the end of diapause suggests the utilization of glycerol or related compounds as cryoprotectants during diapause. Profiles of water content are very similar in short-day and long-day flies, thus suggesting that dehydration is not a mechanism exploited by the flesh fly to achieve cold hardiness. Adult flies that have experienced pupal diapause emerge from the puparium with lipid, glycogen, and water content nearly identical to flies that have not experienced diapause, but the residual dry weight is much lower. The severe depletion of protein may account for the reduced fecundity of flies that have experienced diapause.  相似文献

为了揭示重金属对昆虫细胞免疫的影响及其机理,本文采用血细胞计数、台盼蓝染色、延展与包囊率测定, 以及显微与超微结构观察等方法,以经重金属Cd2+(浓度为150 μg/g)处理的棕尾别麻蝇Boettcherisca peregrina及其对照为研究对象,分别测定了处理组与对照组血细胞的数量与存活率、延展与包囊率,观察其形态结构,并比较了两组间的差异。结果表明: 棕尾别麻蝇初产幼虫经连续喂饲含Cd2+的饲料24,48,72和96 h后,与对照相比其血细胞总数和存活率显著下降,而血细胞的延展率和包囊作用的显著下降则分别出现于取食72和48 h之内,此后则下降不显著;由Cd2+处理幼虫发育形成蛹的血细胞包囊作用也显著低于对照。形态结构观察结果表明,Cd2+处理对幼虫的原血细胞、浆血细胞、颗粒血细胞和类绛色血细胞的显微形态影响不大,但可导致部分浆血细胞不能产生伪足;但均能导致各类血细胞的超微结构发生不同程度的变化,其中主要变化包括:细胞膜受损或破裂,染色质呈现凝聚, 线粒体和内质网等细胞器明显减少,以及胞质内出现空囊泡。结果说明重金属Cd2+对棕尾别麻蝇的血细胞可具有毒害作用。  相似文献

Essential vitamins for the growth of a cell line derived from the flesh fly, Sarcophaga peregrina, were determined. By examining the survivability of continuous passages of the cells in the chemically defined medium lacking one vitamin, thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenate and either niacin or niacinamide were found to be essential for the continuous growth of the flesh fly cells in vitro. The imidazole derivative KK-42 is a synthetic insect growth regulator known previously to be capable of averting embryonic diapause in several Lepidoptera, but whether it also affects diapauses occurring in other developmental stages remains unknown. In the present study, we examined the effect of KK-42 on pupal diapause in two species of Lepidoptera, the Chinese oak silkworm Antheraea pernyi and the corn earworm Helicoverpa zea, and in one species of Diptera, the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis. In A. pernyi, KK-42 delayed pupal diapause termination under the long day conditions that normally break diapause in this species. Likewise, in H. zea, KK-42 delayed termination of pupal diapause, a diapause that, in this species, is normally broken by high temperature. KK-42-treated pupae of these two species eventually terminated diapause and successfully emerged as adults, but the timing of diapause termination was significantly delayed. KK-42 also significantly increased the incidence of pupal diapause in H. zea and S. crassipalpis when administered to larvae that were environmentally programmed for diapause, but it was not capable of inducing pupal diapause in H. zea if larvae were reared under environmental conditions that do not normally evoke the diapause response. Experiments with H. zea showed that the effect of KK-42 on pupal diapause was dose- and stage-dependent, but not temperature-dependent. Results presented here are consistent with a link between KK-42 and the ecdysteroid signaling pathway that regulates pupal diapause.  相似文献

Lucilia sericata has a facultative diapause in the third larval instar after cessation of feeding. Induction of the diapause is influenced by the photoperiod and temperature conditions experienced by insects in the parental generation as well as those experienced by the larvae themselves. The sensitive stage of the parental generation for induction of diapause was examined using diapause‐averting conditions of 16 h light : 8 h darkness (LD 16:8) at 25°C and diapause‐inducing conditions of LD 12:12 at 20°C. The incidence of diapause in the progeny was predominantly determined by the conditions experienced by the parents in the adult stage. Moreover, the results of reciprocal crosses showed that only the mother's experience is involved in the induction of diapause in the progeny.  相似文献

The flesh fly Sarcophaga similis enters pupal diapause in response to short days, but averts diapause under long days. This species shows a sexual difference in the photoperiodic induction of diapause, with females having shorter critical daylength than males. Here, we proposed two hypotheses to explain this sexual difference. First, we proposed a sexual difference in the qualitative evaluation of photoperiods. This hypothesis assumes under the external coincidence model that although the photoinducible phase of both sexes locates at late scotophase, in males, it locates at a slightly earlier phase. However, the results of night interruption experiments clearly ruled out this hypothesis. Because we verified that S. similis evaluated photoperiods quantitatively, we next proposed a sexual difference in the quantitative evaluation of photoperiods. This hypothesis incorporates concepts of a hypothetical substance accumulation that shows a diapause‐inducing effect and an internal threshold that serves as a reference to determine the diapause/nondiapause developmental program. In long‐day exposure experiments and night interruption experiments, females consistently showed a lower incidence of diapause than males. Thus, the present study data satisfactorily meet the second hypothesis, that is a sexual difference in the quantitative evaluation of photoperiods exists in S. similis.  相似文献

Background

Although tropical climate of Thailand is suitably endowed with biodiversity of insects, flies of medical importance is not well investigated. Using information from literature search, fly survey approach and specialist’s experience, we review database of Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux Thomson (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), one of the priorities flesh fly species of medical importance in Thailand.

Results

This review deals with morphology, bionomics and medical involvement. Important morphological characteristics of egg, larva, puparia and adult were highlighted with illustration and/or micrographs. Search pertaining to molecular analysis used for fly identification and developmental rate of larvae were included. Medical involvement of larvae was not only myiasis-producing agent in humans and animals, but associated with human death investigations.

Conclusions

This information will enable us to accurate identify this species and to emphasis the increase medically important scene in Thailand.  相似文献

Abstract A variant of the flesh fly Sarcophaga similis, which does not enter pupal diapause even under diapause‐inducing conditions, is established by artificial selection. Interline crosses of the wild‐type and the variant revealed that the diapause capability is inherited in an incomplete dominant manner. Neither sex linkage nor a maternal factor is involved in the mode of inheritance. Genetic and genetic–environmental interactions are involved in the induction of diapause. In the wild‐type, the post‐feeding larval period is prolonged in response to short days. However, in the variant, the duration of the larval period under short‐day conditions is identical to that under long‐day conditions. Long‐day responses under short‐day conditions at both the larval and pupal stages in the variant indicate that the responses are established by common factors in both stages. The factors causing the long‐day responses under short‐day conditions at different developmental stages in the variant remain to be identified. However, it is plausible to hypothesize that common factors regulate ecdysteroid release at both the larval and pupal stages, and that malfunction of the system regulating these factors triggers such ecdysteroid release, irrespective of the photoperiod. Hence, the photoperiodic responses disappear in the variant in both stages. The adult stage of the variant has a functional circadian clock, suggesting that the nondiapause phenotype is not necessarily involved in malfunction of the circadian clock.  相似文献

Abstract. Eight strains of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae, originating from different localities in western and central Europe, with latitudes ranging from 40.5 to 60oN, displayed marked differences in the period of chilling at 4oC required for diapause termination under a diapause-maintaining short-day photoperiodic regime at 19oC, to which the mites were transferred after the cold period. The higher the latitude from which the strains originated the longer was the period of chilling required for diapause termination, suggesting the presence of a gradient in diapause intensity, diapause being deeper the more northern the origin of the strains. Two strains originating from higher altitudes appeared to have a much deeper diapause than expected from their latitudinal origin. In addition, these two mountain strains showed mutual differences in diapause intensity, notwithstanding the fact that they originated from similar latitudes and altitudes; local climatic conditions probably act as strong selective forces with regard to diapause depth. All strains appeared to be sensitive to photoperiod during the period of diapause development. Diapause was quickly completed by a long-day photoperiod (LD 17:7 h), but was maintained by a short-day photoperiod (LD 10:14h). However, even under the latter regime sensitivity to photoperiod gradually diminished and eventually disappeared, thus leading to ‘spontaneous’ termination of diapause. The length of the period of diapause development, as measured by the sensitivity to photoperiod of diapausing mites, varied between strains; it was shorter in the southern strains and longer in the northern strains. The results indicate great variation in diapause intensity between strains, which is probably genetically determined and may have adaptive significance for this widespread species. When young females which had just entered diapause were kept for ever longer periods of time under the diapause inducing short-day regime at which they had been reared, before being transferred to the cold room, the duration of the period of chilling required for diapause termination was found to decrease proportionally in all three strains tested. These results suggest that intensification of diapause does not occur in T. urticae; diapause intensity seems to be highest at the beginning of diapause and to diminish gradually during diapause development.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Generation time, diapause phenology and cold tolerance of the flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata, were examined under confined natural conditions in central Ohio. In this locality, the fly can complete a maximum of four generations annually.
  • 2 Very few pupae entered diapause in the first and second generations (May to July in 1988). In the third generation (August) 37% of the pupae entered an overwintering diapause, as did all pupae from the fourth generation (September).
  • 3 The adult eclosion date in the spring and annual generation time can be predicted accurately from degree day data.
  • 4 Cold tolerance of the field-overwintering portion of the population was high. After 30 days under field conditions, diapausing pupae readily survived a 7-day exposure to — 17°C. Glycerol appears to be the major cryoprotectant in S.bullata, and glycerol concentrations in the field population (95–142 mm ) remained high throughout the winter.
  • 5 In contrast, diapausing flies reared under laboratory conditions (20°C, 12:12 LD) were less cold tolerant, and glycerol concentrations were lower (6.9–21.2 mm ). Field conditions thus promote the acquisition of high levels of cold tolerance, presumably as a consequence of the accumulation of higher concentrations of glycerol.
  • 6 In spite of differences in the cold tolerance of laboratory and field flies, the supercooling points of the two groups of flies were nearly the same, thus implying that the supercooling point is not a good indicator of cold tolerance.

为了评估取食含重金属铜饲料对棕尾别麻蝇Boettcherisca peregrine亲代及子代的生长发育与繁殖的影响,在室内给棕尾别麻蝇初产幼虫饲喂含不同浓度(200, 400,800和1 600 µg/g)Cu2+的饲料直至化蛹,并对亲代和子代的生长发育和繁殖有关指标进行了观察和分析。结果表明:低浓度的Cu2+(200 µg/g)对其体重和体长起促进作用,但对幼虫历期、化蛹率、蛹历期、羽化率、性比、交配率和产仔量无显著作用;较高浓度的Cu2+ 则有抑制作用,且Cu2+处理浓度越高,亲代幼虫、蛹和雌雄成虫的体重越轻,幼虫和蛹的体长越短,化蛹率、羽化率、交配率和产仔量越低,幼虫历期和蛹期越长,成虫寿命越短。但Cu2+处理对成虫性比则无显著的影响。相比之下,经Cu2+处理后雌虫所产的子代若不再经Cu2+处理,其子代生存、生长发育与繁殖则基本不受影响,说明Cu2+对亲代的影响不能遗传至子代。此外,还探讨了该蝇亲代与子代体内Cu2+含量在其变态过程中的变化。  相似文献
