Effects of acute exercise and detraining on insulin action in trained men   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Seven endurance-trained subjects [maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) 64 +/- 1 (SE) ml.min-1.kg-1] underwent sequential hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps on three occasions: 1) in the "habitual state" 15 h after the last training bout (C), 2) after 60 min of bicycle exercise at 72 +/- 3% of VO2max performed in the habitual state (E), and 3) 5 days after the last ordinary training session (detrained, DT). Sensitivity for insulin-mediated whole-body glucose uptake was not affected by acute exercise [insulin concentrations eliciting 50% of maximal insulin-mediated glucose uptake being 44 +/- 2 (C) vs. 46 +/- 3 (E) microU/ml] but was decreased after detraining (54 +/- 2 microU/ml, P less than 0.05) to levels comparable to those found in untrained subjects [Am. J. Physiol. 254 (Endocrinol. Metab. 17): E248-E259, 1988]. Near-maximal insulin-mediated glucose uptake (responsiveness) was higher than in untrained subjects and not influenced by acute exercise or detraining [13.4 +/- 1.2 (C), 12.2 +/- 0.9 (E), and 12.2 +/- 0.3 (DT) mg.min-1.kg-1]. Calculated by indirect calorimetry, the glucose-to-glycogen conversion was not influenced by E but was reduced during detraining (P less than 0.05) yet remained higher than previously found in untrained subjects (P less than 0.05). However, only on E days did muscle glycogen increase during insulin infusion. Glycogen synthase activity was increased on E and decreased on DT compared with C days.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To study the effects of cardiovascular fitness on hemodynamic responses to exercise during beta-adrenergic blockade (BAB), submaximal [60% of maximum O2 uptake (VO2max)] and maximal treadmill exercise data were collected in 11 trained (T, VO2max 63.3 ml X kg-1 X min-1, 26.8 yr) and 11 untrained (UT, VO2max 44.5 ml X kg-1 X min-1, 25.0 yr) male subjects. Subjects completed two maximal control tests followed by a randomized, double-blind series of maximal tests after 1-wk treatments with placebo (PLAC), propranolol (PROP, 160 mg/day, beta 1- and beta 2-blockade), and atenolol (ATEN, 100 mg/day, beta 1-blockade). Treatments were separated by 1-wk washout periods. At 60% of control VO2max T and UT subjects experienced no reductions in O2 uptake (VO2) with either drug. Submaximal heart rate (HR, beats/min) was 134.8 PLAC, 107.0 PROP, 107.9 ATEN (P less than 0.05 both drugs vs. PLAC) in T subjects and 141.1 PLAC, 106.1 PROP, and 105.0 ATEN (P less than 0.05 both drugs vs. PLAC) in UT subjects. Cardiac output (1/min) for T was 17.3 PLAC, 16.9 PROP, 16.5 ATEN (P less than 0.05 ATEN vs. PLAC in T only) and for UT it was 12.2 (PLAC), 11.7 (PROP), 11.5 (ATEN) (P less than 0.05 both drugs vs. PLAC in UT). Stroke volume increased from 129.8 ml (PLAC) to 158.6 (PROP) and 156.2 (ATEN) in T (P less than 0.05 both drugs vs. PLAC) and from 86.8 (PLAC) to 110.0 (PROP) and 109.8 (ATEN) (P less than 0.05 both drugs vs. PLAC) in UT. The increases in stroke volume (SV) were similar in both groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments is to test the hypothesis that exercise-induced hypoxemia at sea level in highly trained athletes might be exacerbated during acute hypoxia and therefore result in correspondingly larger decrements in maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) compared with less trained individuals. Thirteen healthy male volunteers were divided into two groups according to their level of fitness: 1) trained endurance athletes (T) (n = 7), with a VO2max range of 56-75 ml.kg-1.min-1 and 2) untrained individuals (UT) (n = 6), with a VO2max range of 33-49 ml.kg-1.min-1. Subjects performed two incremental cycle ergometry tests to determine VO2max under hypoxic conditions [14% O2-86% N2, barometric pressure (PB) = 760 Torr] and normoxic conditions (21% O2-79% N2, PB = 760 Torr). Tests were single blind, randomly administered, and separated by at least 72 h. Mean percent oxyhemoglobin saturation (%SaO2) during maximal exercise under hypoxic conditions was significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in the T group (77%) compared with the UT group (86%). Furthermore, the T group exhibited larger decrements (P less than 0.05) in VO2max (normoxic-hypoxic) compared with the UT group. Finally, a significant linear correlation (r = 0.94) existed between normoxic VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1) and delta VO2max (normoxic-hypoxic). These data suggest that highly T endurance athletes suffer more severe gas exchange impairments during acute exposure to hypoxia than UT individuals, and this may explain a portion of the observed variance in delta VO2max among individuals during acute altitude or hypoxia exposure.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of intensity and duration of exercise on lymphocyte proliferation as a measure of immunologic function in men of defined fitness. Three fitness groups--low [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 44.9 +/- 1.5 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and sedentary], moderate (VO2max = 55.2 +/- 1.6 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and recreationally active), and high (VO2max = 63.3 +/- 1.8 ml O2.kg-1.min-1 and endurance trained)--and a mixed control group (VO2max = 52.4 +/- 2.3 ml O2.kg-1.min-1) participated in the study. Subjects completed four randomly ordered cycle ergometer rides: ride 1, 30 min at 65% VO2max; ride 2, 60 min at 30% VO2max; ride 3, 60 min at 75% VO2max; and ride 4, 120 min at 65% VO2max. Blood samples were obtained at various times before and after the exercise sessions. Lymphocyte responses to the T cell mitogen concanavalin A were determined at each sample time through the incorporation of radiolabeled thymidine [( 3H]TdR). Despite differences in resting levels of [3H]TdR uptake, a consistent depression in mitogenesis was present 2 h after an exercise bout in all fitness groups. The magnitude of the reduction in T cell mitogenesis was not affected by an increase in exercise duration. A trend toward greater reduction was present in the highly fit group when exercise intensity was increased. The reduction in lymphocyte proliferation to the concanavalin A mitogen after exercise was a short-term phenomenon with recovery to resting (preexercise) values 24 h after cessation of the work bout. These data suggest that single sessions of submaximal exercise transiently reduce lymphocyte function in men and that this effect occurs irrespective of subject fitness level.  相似文献

Decline in VO2max with aging in master athletes and sedentary men   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fifteen well-trained master endurance athletes [62.0 +/- 2.3 (SE) yr] and 14 sedentary control subjects (61.4 +/- 1.4 yr) were reevaluated after an average follow-up period of approximately 8 yr to obtain information regarding the effects of physical activity on the age-related decline in maximal O2 uptake capacity (VO2max). The master athletes had been training for 10.2 +/- 2.9 yr before initial testing and continued to train during the follow-up period. The sedentary subjects' VO2max declined by an average of 3.3 ml.kg-1.min-1 (33.9 +/- 1.7 vs. 30.6 +/- 1.6, P less than 0.001) over the course of the study, a decline of 12% per decade. In these subjects maximal heart rate declined 8 beats/min (171 vs. 163) and maximal O2 pulse decreased from 0.20 to 0.18 ml.kg-1.beat (P less than 0.05). The master athletes' VO2 max decreased by an average of 2.2 ml.kg-1.min-1 (54.0 +/- 1.7 vs. 51.8 +/- 1.8, P less than 0.05), a 5.5% decline per decade. The master athletes' maximal heart rate was unchanged (171 +/- 3 beats/min) and their maximal O2 pulse decreased from 0.32 to 0.30 ml.kg-1.beat (P less than 0.05). These findings provide evidence that the age-related decrease in VO2max of master athletes who continue to engage in regular vigorous endurance exercise training is approximately one-half the rate of decline seen in age-matched sedentary subjects. Furthermore our results suggest that endurance exercise training may reduce the rate of decline in maximal heart rate that typically occurs as an individual ages.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical activity levels in eleven 9-10 year old boys with reference to aerobic power or lactate threshold (LT). Daily physical activity levels were evaluated from a HR monitoring system for 12 h on three different days. VO2max, VO2-HR relationship and LT were determined by the progressive treadmill test. LT was 36.7 +/- 3.1 ml X kg-1 X min-1 and 71.0 +/- 6.6% VO2max. Mean total time of activities with HR above the level corresponding to 60% VO2max (T-60%) and that above LT (T-LT) were 34 +/- 7 and 18 +/- 7 min, respectively. VO2max (ml X kg-1 X min-1) correlated significantly with T-60% (p less than 0.01), while no significant relationship was found with LT in ml X kg-1 X min-1. In conclusion, longer daily physical activities at moderate to higher intensity for preadolescent children seem to increase VO2max rather than LT.  相似文献

Intrapulmonary oxygen consumption in experimental pneumococcal pneumonia   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
To test the hypothesis that lung affected by acute bacterial pneumonia consumes significant amounts of O2, whole-body O2 consumption (VO2) was measured simultaneously by collection of expired gas (VO2exp) and by the Fick principle (VO2Fick) in five dogs with acute experimental pneumococcal pneumonia and in five uninfected controls. This approach is based on the premise that VO2Fick will not detect lung VO2, whereas the expired gas measurement represents the true whole-body VO2, including the lung. In controls VO2 exp averaged 110 +/- 20 ml/min (4.78 +/- 0.78 ml.min-1.kg-1), and VO2Fick was nearly identical at 114 +/- 21 ml/min (4.96 +/- 0.79 ml.min-1.kg-1). The VO2Fick in the pneumonia group was 127 ml/min, similar to both control group values when indexed for body weight (4.91 +/- 1.17 ml.min-1.kg-1). VO2exp, however, was 146 +/- 46 ml/min (5.74 +/- 1.57 ml.min-1.kg-1), exceeding VO2Fick by an average of 20 +/- 9 ml/min (P less than 0.01). This between-method difference of 20 +/- 9 ml/min (or 24 ml/min if the difference in the control group is assumed to apply to the pneumonia group) amounted to 13-15% of whole-body VO2 and can be attributed to VO2 in the lung, presumably by cells involved in the acute inflammatory response. Implications include the potential for significant underestimate of whole-body VO2 by the Fick method when used in the presence of lung inflammation and overestimate of blood flow to shunting or low ventilation-perfusion ratio lung units by the O2 method of measuring venous admixture-like perfusion. This observation may also explain the disproportionate hypoxemia sometimes seen in patients with severe pneumonia.  相似文献

This study investigated the rectal (Tre), esophageal (Tes), and skin (Tsk) temperature changes in a group of trained traumatic paraplegic men pushing their own wheelchairs on a motor-driven treadmill for a prolonged period in a neutral environment. There were two experiments. The first experiment (Tre and Tsk) involved a homogeneous group (T10-T12/L3) of highly trained paraplegic men [maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) 47.5 +/- 1.8 ml.kg-1.min-1] exercising for 80 min at 60-65% VO2max.Tre and Tsk (head, arm, thigh, and calf) and heart rate (HR) were recorded throughout. O2 uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), CO2 production (VCO2), and heart rate (HR) were recorded at four intervals. During experiment 1 significant changes in HR and insignificant changes in VCO2, VE, and VO2 occurred throughout prolonged exercise. Tre increased significantly from 37.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C (rest) to 37.8 +/- 0.1 degrees C after 80 min of exercise. There were only significant changes in arm Tsk. Experiment 2 involved a nonhomogeneous group (T5-T10/T11) of active paraplegics (VO2max 39.9 +/- 4.3 ml.kg-1.min-1) exercising at 60-65% VO2max for up to 45 min on the treadmill while Tre and Tes were simultaneously recorded. Tes rose significantly faster than Tre during exercise (dT/dt 20 min: Tes 0.050 +/- 0.003 degrees C/min and Tre 0.019 +/- 0.005 degrees C/min), and Tes declined significantly faster than Tre at the end of exercise. Tes was significantly higher than Tre at the end of exercise. Our results suggest that during wheelchair propulsion by paraplegics, Tes may be a better estimate of core temperature than Tre.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of pre-exercise glucose and fructose feedings on muscle glycogen utilization during exercise in six well-trained runners (VO2max = 68.2 +/- 3.4 ml X kg-1 X min-1). On three separate occasions, the runners performed a 30 min treadmill run at 70% VO2max. Thirty minutes prior to exercise each runner ingested 75 g of glucose (trial G), 75 g of fructose (trial F) or 150 ml of a sweetened placebo (trial C). During exercise, no differences were observed between any of the trials for oxygen uptake, heart rate or perceived exertion. Serum glucose levels were elevated as a result of the glucose feeding (P less than 0.05) reaching peak levels at 30 min post-feeding (7.90 +/- 0.24 mmol X l-1). With the onset of exercise, glucose levels dropped to a low of 5.89 +/- 0.85 mmol X l-1 at 15 min of exercise in trial G. Serum glucose levels in trials F and C averaged 6.21 +/- 0.31 mmol X l-1 and 5.95 +/- 0.23 mmol X l-1 respectively, and were not significantly different (P less than 0.05). There were also no differences in serum glucose levels between any of the trials at 15 and 30 min of exercise.  相似文献

The kinetics underlying plasma epinephrine concentrations were studied. Six athletes (T) and six sedentary males (C) were given intravenous infusions of 3H-labeled epinephrine, after which arterial blood was drawn. They rested sitting and bicycled continuously to exhaustion (60 min at 125 W, 60 min at 160 W, 40 min at 200 W, and 240 W to the end). Work time was 154 +/- 13 (SE) (T) and 75 +/- 6 (C) min. At rest, epinephrine clearance was identical [28.4 +/- 1.3 (T) vs. 29.2 +/- 1.8 (C) ml . kg-1 . min-1], but plasma concentration [1.42 +/- 0.27 (T) vs. 0.71 +/- 0.16 (C) nmol . l-1] and, accordingly, secretion [2.9 +/- 0.7 vs. 1.5 +/- 0.4 nmol . min-1] were higher (P less than 0.05) in T than C subjects. Epinephrine clearance was closely related to relative work load, decreasing from 15% above the basal level at 30% of maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max) to 22% below at 76% of VO2 max. Epinephrine concentrations increased much more with work intensity than could be accounted for by changes in clearance and were, at exhaustion, higher (P less than 0.05) in T (7.2 +/- 1.6) than in C (2.5 +/- 0.7 nmol . l-1) subjects despite similar glucose, heart rate, and hematocrit values. At a given load, epinephrine clearance rapidly became constant, whereas concentration increased continuously. Forearm extraction of epinephrine invalidated use of blood from a cubital vein or a hand vein arterialized by hot water in turnover measurements. During exercise, changes in epinephrine concentrations reflect changes in secretion rather than in clearance. Training may increase adrenal medullary secretory capacity.  相似文献

Twenty-eight subjects (6 normal men, 14 distance runners, and 8 rowers) were tested for maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and associated physiological measures during bicycle ergometer exercise with toe stirrups while standing (BEts) and during treadmill exercise (TM). Correlation between BEts VO2max and TM VO2max was high (r = 0.901, p less than 0.05). No significant difference existed between the two VO2max values (60.3 +/- 8.9 vs. 60.5 +/- 9.7 ml.kg-1.min-1; n = 28). No differences were found even when three different subgroups were separately compared. It is concluded that the higher VO2max elicited during BEts as compared with normal sitting cycling may be attributed to the increased muscle blood flow and/or involvement of a larger muscle mass, the latter being partly evidenced by the observation of greater electromyographic activity during BEts.  相似文献

The improved glucose tolerance and increased insulin sensitivity associated with regular exercise appear to be the result, in large part, of the residual effects of the last bout of exercise. To determine the effects of exercise intensity on this response, glucose tolerance and the insulin response to a glucose load were determined in seven well-trained male subjects [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 58 ml.kg-1.min-1] and in seven nontrained male subjects (VO2max = 49 ml.kg-1.min-1) in the morning after an overnight fast 1) 40 h after the last training session (control), 2) 14 h after 40 min of exercise on a cycle ergometer at 40% VO2max, and 3) 14 h after 40 min of exercise at 80% VO2max. Subjects replicated their diets for 3 days before each test and ate a standard meal the evening before the oral glucose tolerance test. No differences in the 3-h insulin or glucose response were observed between the control trial and before exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max in the trained subjects. In the nontrained subjects the plasma insulin response was decreased by 40% after a single bout of exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max (7.0 X 10(3) vs. 5.0 X 10(3), P less than 0.05; 3.8 X 10(3) microU.ml-1.180 min-1, P less than 0.01). The insulin response after a single bout of exercise in the nontrained subjects was comparable with the insulin responses found in the trained subjects for the control and exercise trials.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six trained male cyclists and six untrained but physically active men participated in this study to test the hypothesis that the use of percentage maximal oxygen consumption (%VO2max) as a normalising independent variable is valid despite significant differences in the absolute VO2max of trained and untrained subjects. The subjects underwent an exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to determine VO2max and lactate threshold. The subjects were grouped as trained (T) if their VO2max exceeded 60 ml.kg-1.min-1, and untrained (UT) if their VO2max was less than 50 ml.kg-1.min-1. The subjects were required to exercise on the ergometer for up to 40 min at power outputs that corresponded to approximately 50% and 70% VO2max. The allocation of each exercise session (50% or 70% VO2max) was random and each session was separated by at least 5 days. During these tests venous blood was taken 10 min before exercise (- 10 min), just prior to the commencement of exercise (0 min), after 20 min of exercise (20 min), at the end of exercise and 10 min postexercise (+ 10 min) and analysed for concentrations of cortisol, [Na+], [K+], [Cl-], glucose, free fatty acid, lactate [la-], [NH3], haemoglobin [Hb] and for packed cell volume. The oxygen consumption (VO2) and related variables were measured at two time intervals (14-15 and 34-35 min) during the prolonged exercise tests. Rectal temperature was measured throughout both exercise sessions. There was a significant interaction effect between the level of training and exercise time at 50% VO2max for heart rate (fc) and venous [la-].(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The relationship between aerobic fitness as measured by maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) and the cardiovascular response to laboratory stressors was examined in two experiments. First, 34 male college students were screened on the basis of their heart rate (HR) response to a reaction time-shock avoidance (RT-AV) task. The six individuals showing an average HR increase of 45 beats/min (reactives) and the six subjects showing an average increase of 8 beats/min (nonreactives) did not differ in VO2max (47.7 +/- 2 vs. 48.7 +/- 1 ml.kg-1.min-1, respectively). However, a statistically significant association between a reported family history of hypertension and peak HR response to RT-AV was seen. In the second series of experiments, the plasma catecholamine and cardiovascular responses of eight elite endurance-trained athletes (VO2max 70.6 +/- 1 ml.kg-1.min-1) and eight untrained volunteers (VO2max 45.5 +/- 1 ml.kg-1.min-1) were compared on the following: RT-AV, reaction time for monetary reward (RT-AP), cold pressor, isometric handgrip, and orthostatic challenge (standing). The trained group exhibited a significantly lower mean HR at rest (P less than 0.05), otherwise there were no significant differences between the two groups. The results indicate that although individual differences (e.g., family history of hypertension and high resting HR) can be related to the potential for cardiovascular responses to novel laboratory challenges, the contribution of fitness to this characteristic is much less clear. Further exploration of questions pertaining to fitness and stress should focus on individuals with a predisposition to stress reactivity.  相似文献

The effects of carbohydrate and fat intake on exercise-induced fatigue was investigated in 30 untrained--(VO2max of 40.6 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and 24 trained-subjects (VO2max of 52.3 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) performing a 34 km march with a 25 kg backpack. Marching time was 8 1/2 h and 6 1/3 h in the untrained and trained-subjects respectively. The subjects were divided into 3 dietary groups. One group had free access to sugar cubes, the second group was offered almonds and the third one served as a control. Triglyceride levels decreased by 65 mg X dl-1 in untrained, and by 115 mg X dl-1 in trained subjects, while blood glucose remained at normal levels. In the untrained subjects, ingestion of almonds delayed the subjective sensation of exhaustion, while 50% of the controls and the sugar consuming subjects complained of exhaustion. The data suggest that ingestion of food containing fat delays exercise induced exhaustion or fatigue to a greater extent than does carbohydrate ingestion.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether sweat lactate secretion during exercise [approximately 70% maximum O2 consumption (VO2max), 60 min] differed in active vs. sedentary female subjects. Sweat rate, total sweat lactate secretion, and sweat lactate concentration were monitored in a group of sedentary (VO2max = 41.0 +/- 1.62 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and active (VO2max = 51.2 +/- 3.20 ml X kg-1 X min-1) women. Sweat rate was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in the active subjects. There was a significant difference between groups in total amount of sweat lactate secreted (P less than 0.05), with the active group secreting less lactate (29.8 +/- 5.03 mmol, mean +/- SE) than the sedentary group (50.2 +/- 6.61 mmol). Concomitant with the lower total sweat lactate secretion in the active subjects was a significantly (P less than 0.05) more dilute sweat lactate concentration (42.6 +/- 14.08 vs. 100.4 +/- 32.37 mM). In these female subjects, sweat lactate concentration was inversely correlated (r = -0.79, P less than 0.01, n = 10) to sweat rate. It is concluded that total sweat lactate loss is significantly less in active than in sedentary women and that the active subjects secrete a greater quantity of lactate dilute sweat.  相似文献

Twenty-seven children (age 7-17 years) with varying degrees of blindness but with no other known disorder were assessed for physical fitness. Twenty-seven randomly selected children with normal eyesight were also assessed. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) was measured directly during a progressive exercise test on a treadmill. There was a significant and substantial reduction in VO2max in totally blind children (mean +/- standard deviation 35.0 +/- 7.5 ml X min-1 X kg-1) compared with normal children (45.9 +/- 6.6 ml X min-1 X kg-1). Partially sighted children had a significant but smaller reduction in VO2max. Fitness assessed by a step-test was significantly reduced in the visually impaired children, and skin-fold thickness was also significantly greater in totally blind children. The level of habitual physical activity for each child, as assessed by a questionnaire, correlated with VO2max (r = 0.53, p less than 0.0001). Blind children were significantly less active than normal children, and the difference between mean VO2max for blind and normal children became non-significant when their different activity levels were taken into account. It is concluded that totally blind children are less fit than other children at least partly because of their lower level of habitual activity.  相似文献

The effects of eccentric exercise on whole body protein metabolism were compared in five young untrained [age 24 +/- 1 yr, maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 49 +/- 6 ml.kg-1.min-1] and five older untrained men (age 61 +/- 1 yr, VO2max = 34 +/- 2 ml.kg-1.min-1). They performed 45 min of eccentric exercise on a cycle ergometer at a power output equivalent to 80% VO2max (182 +/- 18 W). Beginning 5 days before exercise and continuing for at least 10 days after exercise, they consumed a eucaloric diet providing 1.5 g.kg-1.day-1 of protein. Leucine metabolism in the fed state was measured before, immediately after, and 10 days after exercise, with intravenous L-[1-13C]leucine as a tracer (0.115 mumol.kg-1.min-1). Leucine flux increased 9% immediately after exercise (P less than 0.011) and remained elevated 10 days later, with no effect of age. Leucine oxidation increased 19% immediately after exercise and remained 15% above baseline 10 days after exercise (P less than 0.0001), with no effect of age. In the young men, urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine per gram of creatinine did not increase until 10 days postexercise (P less than 0.05), but in the older men, it increased 5 days after exercise and remained high through 10 days postexercise (P less than 0.05), averaging 37% higher than in the young men. These data suggest that eccentric exercise produces a similar increase in whole body protein breakdown in older and young men, but myofibrillar proteolysis may contribute more to whole body protein breakdown in the older group.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of endurance training on ventilatory function in older individuals, 1) 14 master athletes (MA) [age 63 +/- 2 yr (mean +/- SD); maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) 52.1 +/- 7.9 ml . kg-1 . min-1] were compared with 14 healthy male sedentary controls (CON) (age 63 +/- 3 yr; VO2max of 27.6 +/- 3.4 ml . kg-1 . min-1), and 2) 11 sedentary healthy men and women, age 63 +/- 2 yr, were reevaluated after 12 mo of endurance training that increased their VO2max 25%. MA had a significantly lower ventilatory response to submaximal exercise at the same O2 uptake (VE/VO2) and greater maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximal exercise ventilation (VEmax), and ratio of VEmax to MVV than CON. Except for MVV, all of these parameters improved significantly in the previously sedentary subjects in response to training. Hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) at rest and the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (VE/VCO2) during submaximal exercise were similar for MA and CON and unaffected by training. We conclude that the increase in VE/VO2 during submaximal exercise observed with aging can be reversed by endurance training, and that after training, previously sedentary older individuals breathe at the same percentage of MVV during maximal exercise as highly trained athletes of similar age.  相似文献
