We review the diversity of freshwater organisms in the Mediterranean Basin (hereafter Med), particularly from streams and rivers. We present available information on the richness, endemicity, and distribution of each freshwater organism group within the Med, and make a comparison with Palearctic diversity. Approximately 35% of known Palearctic freshwater species and more than 6% of the World’s freshwater species are present in the Med. A high degree of endemicity is found in the Med freshwater biota. These data, together with the degree to which many freshwater species are threatened, support the inclusion of the Med among World biodiversity hotspots. Nevertheless, knowledge of Med biodiversity is still incomplete, particularly for some taxa. Regarding to the spatial distribution of species within the Med, the richest area is the North, although patterns differ among groups. A comparison of the ecological and biological traits of endemic and non-endemic species of three riverine groups (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) revealed that endemic species have several strategies and mechanisms to face typical mediterranean-climate conditions, such as drought, when compared to non-endemic species. We briefly analyse the conservation status of the region’s biodiversity. Finally, we present some future challenges regarding the knowledge and protection of Med freshwater biodiversity.  相似文献

Freshwater diatom biogeography in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Aim Document the biogeographical distributions of diatoms in the Canadian Arctic in relation to environmental factors. Location The Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Methods Diatoms were extracted from lake sediments and treated using standard methods. Rarefaction‐estimated species richness, diatom concentrations (valves cc?1), and diatom abundance were mapped using a Geographic Information System. The physical and chemical parameters of the lakes were measured. Results A total of 326 taxa from 63 genera were found in 62 lakes of the study area. Up to 85 and as low as eight taxa were identified in any one lake, and rarefaction‐estimated species richness correlated with lake size. Nearby lakes could have greatly different diatom assemblages. Many taxa showed limited distributions. Response surfaces and ordination techniques indicate that a large number of taxa prefer colder regions of the Arctic while the abundance of others was influenced by lake water chemical parameters such as TKN and SiO2. Main conclusions Although many taxa were common and found across the study area, diatom assemblages showed regional differences in the Arctic. Some taxa were not found in either the northern or southern parts of the Archipelago and others were restricted to particular regions. Newly delineated genera showed interpretable geographical patterns and could be related to environmental factors, suggesting that this more natural grouping may enhance our understanding of diatom ecology. Geographical, physical, and chemical factors are needed to explain diatom distributions in the Arctic.  相似文献

Phenanthrene, a low-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, was incubated with water samples from various reservoir systems in Tennessee to evaluate the potential for significant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation by the indigenous microbial populations. Biodegradation was assessed by comparison of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substrate recovery in degradation flasks relative to sterile control flasks. During 1977 field studies, the mean phenanthrene biodegradation was approximately 80% after a 4-week incubation. Within a given habitat, 45% of the total variability in phenanthrene biodegradation was attributable to the physical, chemical, and microbiological site characteristics examined. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation was directly related to the historical environmental pollution of the sampling sites examined, the length of biodegradation assessment, temperature, and the molecular size of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substrate.  相似文献

In marine sediments cathodic oxygen reduction at the sediment surface can be coupled to anodic sulfide oxidation in deeper anoxic layers through electrical currents mediated by filamentous, multicellular bacteria of the Desulfobulbaceae family, the so-called cable bacteria. Until now, cable bacteria have only been reported from marine environments. In this study, we demonstrate that cable bacteria also occur in freshwater sediments. In a first step, homogenized sediment collected from the freshwater stream Giber Å, Denmark, was incubated in the laboratory. After 2 weeks, pH signatures and electric fields indicated electron transfer between vertically separated anodic and cathodic half-reactions. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed the presence of Desulfobulbaceae filaments. In addition, in situ measurements of oxygen, pH, and electric potential distributions in the waterlogged banks of Giber Å demonstrated the presence of distant electric redox coupling in naturally occurring freshwater sediment. At the same site, filamentous Desulfobulbaceae with cable bacterium morphology were found to be present. Their 16S rRNA gene sequence placed them as a distinct sister group to the known marine cable bacteria, with the genus Desulfobulbus as the closest cultured lineage. The results of the present study indicate that electric currents mediated by cable bacteria could be important for the biogeochemistry in many more environments than anticipated thus far and suggest a common evolutionary origin of the cable phenotype within Desulfobulbaceae with subsequent diversification into a freshwater and a marine lineage.  相似文献

Light, fluorescence and electron microscopical analysis of therooted freshwater plantRanunculus trichophyllusrevealed a peculiaranatomical feature. In addition to the true endodermis encirclingthe root stele, endodermis-like sheaths occurred around eachvascular bundle of the leaf segments and of the eustelic stemwith its large central cavity, which assumed an anatomical featureresembling that of some pteridophyte stems. These impermeablesheaths, whose cells differentiate suberized walls, can playa major role in hampering the apoplastic leakage of the pressurizedwater solution which flows throughout the plant in xylem vesselsand contains the mineral nutrients taken up by the roots fromthe sediment. Moreover, these sheaths can function in preventingflooding of the aerenchymatic cavities of the submerged organs.In this way the endodermis-like sheaths preserve the correctcirculation of gas and nutrient solution through the entireorganism and assume great significance as a structural mechanismevolved by this species to survive and grow underwater.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company. The arsenic ambient water quality criterion (AWQC) for protection of human health via ingestion of aquatic organisms is currently 0.14 μ g/L. This AWQC is derived using a bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 44, which is a consumption-weighted average based on two data points for oysters and fish that was proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1980 for broad application to freshwater and marine environments. This BCF is based on the assumption that bioaccumulation is a simple linear function of the exposure concentration. In the nearly quarter of a century since this BCF was promulgated, there have been additions to the arsenic bioaccumulation database and a broader scientific understanding of bioaccumulation mechanisms and how they can be applied to estimating tissue concentrations in aquatic organisms. From this database, we identified 12 studies of arsenic bioaccumulation in freshwater fishes in order to explore differences in laboratory-generated BCFs and field-generated bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) and to assess their relationship to arsenic concentrations in water. Our analysis indicates that arsenic concentrations in tissue and arsenic BAFs may be power functions of arsenic concentration in water. A power function indicates that the highest BCF values may occur at low background levels and may decrease as environmental concentrations increase above the ambient range.  相似文献

Freshwater nematodes of the Galápagos archipelago were studied from four samples collected in 1988. Eighteen species, two of which are new to science, belonging to five orders, Enoplida, Dorylaimida, Mononchida, Monhysterida and Chromadorida, are described. Alaimus wittmeri n.sp. is characterised by having a smooth cuticle, a more posteriorly enlarged pharynx, a posteriorly situated amphidial fusus, obscure but anteriorly situated excretory pore, a mono-opisthodelphic ovary, and by the absence of sexual dimorphism in the lip region, the absence of pre-vulval uterine sac, the presence of males that have few (4–7) and weak ventromedian supplements and absence of mucro on tail tip. Monhystera floreanae n. sp. is distinguished by its females having a small body (L = 492–634 µm) with a narrow lip region, narrow posteriorly located amphidial openings, a small value for the c'-ratio (c' = 6.0–7.5), weak vaginal sphincter, by the absence of post-vaginal gland cells, absence of males and absence of crystalloid bodies. The difficulty in the use of crystalloid bodies as diagnostic character in the genus Monhystera is discussed. Two forms, a big form and a small form, which are similar except in measurements are reported for Achromadora micoletzkyi. SEM photos of ruptured cuticle of A. micoletzkyi and A. semiarmata show unique intra-cuticular structures. Comparison of these structures in the two species is made. Papilliform instead of setiform outer labial sensilla are also observed in A. micoletzkyi. The presence of the male and fine crystalloid bodies in Achromadora semiarmata, dorsal body pore in Prismatolaimus dolichurus and Prismatolaimus kenyensis, forty longitudinal cuticular ridges around the mid-body of Stomachoglossa pachyderma, crystalloid bodies in Ironus dentifurcatus are reported here for the first time. SEM photos of twelve species: Monhystera floreanae n. sp., Monhystera somereni, Alaimus wittmeri n. sp., Monhystrella hastata, Paramphidelus dolichurus, Eutobrilus annetteae, Ironus dentifurcatus, Chronogaster cameroonensis, Rhabdolaimus terrestris, Stomachoglossa pachyderma, Achromadora micoletzkyi and Achromadora semiarmata, are also presented.The richest nematode fauna was found in El Junco (San Cristobal), the only permanent freshwater lake on the archipelago. The nine species recorded from the lake are probably only a fraction of the total nematode fauna. The very recent man made reservoir La Toma has a relatively high diversity, due to its vicinity to El Junco. It is argued that the freshwater nematodes from San Cristobal probably arrived there through passive transport by birds.The freshwater bodies encountered on Floreana are very different from those on San Cristobal and so is their nematode fauna. Part of the species found on these islands may have been transported by land birds, others may have invaded the freshwater from terrestrial habitats.Apart from the two new species, the other ones have a wide to very wide distribution (cosmopolitan, southern hemisphere, ...), so that endemism of freshwater nematodes is very low, if it exists at all. This is due to easy dispersal capacities of nematodes on the one hand and the recent colonization (not more than 10 000, max. 40 000 years) on the other hand.  相似文献

The bacteria on the gills of 7 species of freshwater salmonid fishes were examined qualitatively and quantitatively. Both wild and hatchery cultured salmonids were examined. The former were obtained from 12 different locations in British Columbia. Species of Pseudomonas and Cytophaga predominated on both groups of fish. The microflora of the wild fish also contained Aeromonas and members of the Brevibacterium –coryneform– Erysipelothrix group. The microflora of cultured fish was less varied. As many as 106 viable organisms/g wet weight of gill tissue were recovered.  相似文献
