In this work we present a mathematical model describing the dynamics of a population where sex allocation remains flexible throughout adult life and so can be adjusted to current environmental conditions. We consider that the fractions of immature individuals acquiring male and female sexual roles are density dependent through nonlinear functions of a weighted total population size. The main goal of this work is to understand the role of life-history parameters on the stabilization or destabilization of the population dynamics.The model turns out to be a nonlinear discrete model which is analysed by studying the existence of fixed points as well as their stability conditions in terms of model parameters. The existence of more complex asymptotic behaviours of system solutions is shown by means of numerical simulations.Females have larger fertility rate than males. On the other hand, increasing population density favours immature individuals adopting the male role. A positive equilibrium of the system exists whenever fertility and survival rates of one of the sexual roles, if shared by all adults, allow population growing while the opposite happens with the other sexual role. In terms of the female inherent net reproductive number, ηF, it is shown that the positive equilibria are stable when ηF is larger and closed to 1 while for larger values of ηF a certain asymptotic assumption on the investment rate in the female function implies that the population density is permanent. Depending on the other parameters values, the asymptotic behaviour of solutions becomes more complex, even chaotic. In this setting the stabilization/destabilization effects of the abruptness rate in density dependence, of the survival rates and of the competition coefficients are analysed.  相似文献

The emerging role of glycans as versatile biochemical signals in diverse aspects of cellular sociology calls for establishment of sensitive methods to monitor carbohydrate recognition by receptors such as lectins. Most of these techniques involve the immobilization of one of the binding partners on a surface, e.g. atomic force microscopy, glycan array and Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), hereby simulating cell surface presentation. Here, we report the synthesis of fluorescent glycoconjugates, with a functionalization strategy which avoids the frequently occurring ring opening at the reducing end for further immobilization on a surface or derivatization with biotin. In order to improve the versatility of these derivatized glycans for biological studies, a new approach for the synthesis of biotinylated and fluorescent glycans has also been realized. Finally, to illustrate their usefulness the neoglycoconjugates were immobilized on different surfaces, and the interaction analysis with a model lectin, the toxin from mistletoe, proved them to act as potent ligands, underscoring the merit of the presented synthetic approach. Aggregation can confer advantages in animal foraging, defense, and thermoregulation. There is a tight connection between the evolution of insect sociality and a highly effective immune system, presumably to inhibit rapid disease spread in a crowded environment. This connection is less evident for animals that spend only part of their life cycle in a social environment, such as noneusocial gregarious insects. Our aim was to elucidate the effects of group living by the gregarious larvae of the Glanville fritillary butterfly with respect to individual performance, immunity, and susceptibility to a parasitoid. We were also interested in the role of family relative to common postdiapause environment in shaping life‐history traits. Larvae were reared at high or low density and then exposed to the pupal parasitoid wasp Pteromalus apum, either in presence or absence of a previous immune challenge that was used to measure the encapsulation immune response. Surviving adult butterflies were further tested for immunity. The wasp offspring from successfully parasitized butterfly pupae were counted and their brood sex ratios assessed. Larvae reared at high density grew larger and faster than those at low density. Despite high mortality due to parasitism, survival was greater among individuals with high pupal immunity in both density treatments. Moreover, butterfly pupae reared at high density were able to kill a larger fraction of individuals in the parasitoid broods, although this did not increase survival of the host. Finally, a larger proportion of variation observed in most of the traits was explained by butterfly family than by common postdiapause rearing environment, except for adult survival and immunity, for which this pattern was reversed. This gregarious butterfly clearly benefits from high conspecific density in terms of developmental performance and its ability to fight a parasitoid. These positive effects may be driven by cooperative interactions during feeding.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to evaluate the origin of the antimalarial effect of the lead compound P218. The simulations of the ligand in the cavities of wild-type, mutant Plasmodium falciparum Dihydrofolate Reductase (PfDHFR) and the human DHFR revealed the differences in the atomic-level interactions and also provided explanation for the specificity of this ligand toward PfDHFR. The binding free energy estimation using Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area method revealed that P218 has higher binding affinity (~ ?30 to ?35 kcal/mol) toward PfDHFR (both in wild-type and mutant forms) than human DHFR (~ ?22 kcal/mol), corroborating the experimental observations. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding analysis of the trajectories showed that P218 formed two stable hydrogen bonds with human DHFR (Ile7 and Glu30), wild-type and double-mutant PfDHFR’s (Asp54 and Arg122), while it formed three stable hydrogen bonds with quadruple-mutant PfDHFR (Asp54, Arg59, and Arg122). Additionally, P218 binding in PfDHFR is stabilized by hydrogen bonds with residues Ile14 and Ile164. It was found that mutant residues do not reduce the binding affinity of P218 to PfDHFR, in contrast, Cys59Arg mutation strongly favors inhibitor binding to quadruple-mutant PfDHFR. The atomistic-level details explored in this work will be highly useful for the design of non-resistant novel PfDHFR inhibitors as antimalarial agents.  相似文献

To characterize driving forces and driven processes in formation of a large-interface, wrapped protein-DNA complex analogous to the nucleosome, we have investigated the thermodynamics of binding the 34-base pair (bp) H′ DNA sequence to the Escherichia coli DNA-remodeling protein integration host factor (IHF). Isothermal titration calorimetry and fluorescence resonance energy transfer are applied to determine effects of salt concentration [KCl, KF, K glutamate (KGlu)] and of the excluded solute glycine betaine (GB) on the binding thermodynamics at 20 °C. Both the binding constant Kobs and enthalpy ΔH°obs depend strongly on [salt] and anion identity. Formation of the wrapped complex is enthalpy driven, especially at low [salt] (e.g., ΔHoobs = − 20.2 kcal·mol− 1 in 0.04 M KCl). ΔH°obs increases linearly with [salt] with a slope (dΔH°obs/d[salt]), which is much larger in KCl (38 ± 3 kcal·mol− 1 M− 1) than in KF or KGlu (11 ± 2 kcal·mol− 1 M− 1). At 0.33 M [salt], Kobs is approximately 30-fold larger in KGlu or KF than in KCl, and the [salt] derivative SKobs = dlnKobs/dln[salt] is almost twice as large in magnitude in KCl (− 8.8 ± 0.7) as in KF or KGlu (− 4.7 ± 0.6).A novel analysis of the large effects of anion identity on Kobs, SKobs and on ΔH°obs dissects coulombic, Hofmeister, and osmotic contributions to these quantities. This analysis attributes anion-specific differences in Kobs, SKobs, and ΔH°obs to (i) displacement of a large number of water molecules of hydration [estimated to be 1.0(± 0.2) × 103] from the 5340 Å2 of IHF and H′ DNA surface buried in complex formation, and (ii) significant local exclusion of F and Glu from this hydration water, relative to the situation with Cl, which we propose is randomly distributed. To quantify net water release from anionic surface (22% of the surface buried in complexation, mostly from DNA phosphates), we determined the stabilizing effect of GB on Kobs: dlnKobs/d[GB]  = 2.7 ± 0.4 at constant KCl activity, indicating the net release of ca. 150 H2O molecules from anionic surface.  相似文献

Advances in high throughput 'omic technologies are starting to provide unprecedented insights into how components of biological systems are organized and interact. Key to exploiting these datasets is the definition of the components that comprise the system of interest. Although a variety of knowledge bases exist that capture such information, a major challenge is determining how these resources may be best utilized. Here we present a systematic curation strategy to define a systems-level view of the human extracellular matrix (ECM)--a three-dimensional meshwork of proteins and polysaccharides that impart structure and mechanical stability to tissues. Employing our curation strategy we define a set of 357 proteins that represent core components of the ECM, together with an additional 524 genes that mediate related functional roles, and construct a map of their physical interactions. Topological properties help identify modules of functionally related proteins, including those involved in cell adhesion, bone formation and blood clotting. Because of its major role in cell adhesion, proliferation and morphogenesis, defects in the ECM have been implicated in cancer, atherosclerosis, asthma, fibrosis, and arthritis. We use MeSH annotations to identify modules enriched for specific disease terms that aid to strengthen existing as well as predict novel gene-disease associations. Mapping expression and conservation data onto the network reveal modules evolved in parallel to convey tissue-specific functionality on otherwise broadly expressed units. In addition to demonstrating an effective workflow for defining biological systems, this study crystallizes our current knowledge surrounding the organization of the ECM.  相似文献

Laboratory populations of cloned Daphnia magna were exposed at different population phases (growing phase, density peak, stable phase) to the insecticide carbaryl at 15 μg 1−1, which was harmful to juveniles but not to adults, and their population dynamics were analyzed. The population declined most at the density peak, when not only juveniles but also many adult individuals died. To analyze the factors affecting population vulnerability to carbaryl, acute toxicity tests were conducted using Daphnia individuals of different body sizes under different food conditions. The test revealed that daphnid sensitivity to carbaryl increased greatly when food density was changed from a high food level to a low level. This food condition, of low availability, might be the condition to which the Daphnia populations were exposed at their density peak. The synergism of the negative impacts of anthropogenic and natural stresses such as insecticides and food shortage may control aquatic populations.  相似文献

  • 2 The present study aimed to examine variation in the ability of gypsy moth larvae Lymantria dispar (Lymantriidae) to complete development on different species of the plant genus Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). Leaves of at least some Eucalyptus species contain formylated phloroglucinol derivatives. These are secondary metabolites that are evolutionarily unfamiliar to the gypsy moth.
  • 3 Larvae of gypsy moth showed extremely variable responses in larval performance between Eucalyptus species, between individual trees within host plant species, between moth populations, and between individuals within moth populations.
  • 4 Larval survivorship was in the range 0–94%, depending on the host. Failure of at least some larvae to complete development on some Eucalyptus species indicates that gypsy moth larvae have a limited ability to process secondary metabolites in eucalypt leaves.
  • 5 At least some individuals, however, appear to already possess biochemical mechanisms that process the secondary metabolites in leaves of Eucalyptus species, and therefore the abilities of larvae to complete development on phylogenetically and chemically unfamiliar hosts are already present before the gypsy moth encounters these potential hosts.

Assessing diet variability is of main importance to better understand the biology of bats and design conservation strategies. Although the advent of metabarcoding has facilitated such analyses, this approach does not come without challenges. Biases may occur throughout the whole experiment, from fieldwork to biostatistics, resulting in the detection of false negatives, false positives or low taxonomic resolution. We detail a rigorous metabarcoding approach based on a short COI minibarcode and two‐step PCR protocol enabling the “all at once” taxonomic identification of bats and their arthropod prey for several hundreds of samples. Our study includes faecal pellets collected in France from 357 bats representing 16 species, as well as insect mock communities that mimic bat meals of known composition, negative and positive controls. All samples were analysed using three replicates. We compare the efficiency of DNA extraction methods, and we evaluate the effectiveness of our protocol using identification success, taxonomic resolution, sensitivity and amplification biases. Our parallel identification strategy of predators and prey reduces the risk of mis‐assigning prey to wrong predators and decreases the number of molecular steps. Controls and replicates enable to filter the data and limit the risk of false positives, hence guaranteeing high confidence results for both prey occurrence and bat species identification. We validate 551 COI variants from arthropod including 18 orders, 117 family, 282 genus and 290 species. Our method therefore provides a rapid, resolutive and cost‐effective screening tool for addressing evolutionary ecological issues or developing “chirosurveillance” and conservation strategies.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of 54 Tibetans residing at altitudes ranging from 3,000–4,500 m were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), examined by high-resolution restriction endonuclease analysis, and compared with those previously described in 10 other Asian and Siberian populations. This comparison revealed that more than 50% of Asian mtDNAs belong to a unique mtDNA lineage which is found only among Mongoloids, suggesting that this lineage most likely originated in Asia at an early stage of the human colonization of that continent. Within the Tibetan mtDNAs, sets of additional linked polymorphic sites defined seven minor lineages of related mtDNA haplotypes (haplogroups). The frequency and distribution of these haplogroups in modern Asian populations are supportive of previous genetic evidence that Tibetans, although located in southern Asia, share common ancestral origins with northern Mongoloid populations. This analysis of Tibetan mtDNAs also suggests that mtDNA mutations are unlikely to play a major role in the adaptation of Tibetans to high altitudes. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The challenge hypothesis asserts that testosterone levels and aggression in male adult animals are closely associated with one another in the context of intense reproductive competition, particularly when males challenge one another for the access to females. For mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata), the presence of a solitary male in the vicinity of a social group can be considered a threat for the reproductive success of the resident males, as group takeovers by solitary males are followed by a reestablishment of the access to females among group males and sometimes by infanticide. Therefore, these episodes should be accompanied by an increase in testosterone secretion according to the challenge hypothesis. In order to test our prediction, we relate different group and subpopulation variables to the testosterone levels measured in feces collected from 10 groups living in 6 forest fragments, at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico. Our results suggest that resident A. palliata males regard solitary individuals as potential contesters for their reproductive success and that they respond to interactions with them with an increase in testosterone levels, that is increasing their aggressiveness. Our results also suggest that in the studied groups all males have at least certain access to mates and that the entrance of a new male would affect their reproductive success negatively. Finally, the negative effects of chronically high testosterone levels may be negatively affecting the fitness of our study groups living in high population densities and small fragments.  相似文献

 We used a mapping population of 131 doubled-haploid lines, produced from a cross between an improved indica rice variety (IR64) and a traditional japonica variety (Azucena), to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for resistance to the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens. We evaluated the parents and mapping population with six tests that measure varying combinations of the three basic mechanisms of insect host plant resistance, i.e., antixenosis, antibiosis, and tolerance. To factor-out the effect of the major resistance gene Bph1 from IR64, the screening was done with two BPH populations from Luzon Island, The Philippines, that are almost completely adapted to this gene. A total of seven QTLs associated with resistance were identified, located on 6 of the 12 rice chromosomes. Individual QTLs accounted for between 5.1 and 16.6% of the phenotypic variance. Two QTLs were predominantly associated with a single resistance mechanism: one with antixenosis and one with tolerance. Most of the QTLs were derived from IR64, which has been shown to have a relatively durable level of moderate resistance under field conditions. LCAT plays a key role in the maturation of HDL, as evidenced by low HDL-cholesterol levels in carriers of deleterious mutations in LCAT. However, the role of LCAT in atherosclerosis is unclear. We set out to study this in a prospective study. Plasma LCAT levels, which strongly correlate with LCAT activity, were measured in baseline nonfasting samples of 933 apparently healthy men and women who developed coronary artery disease (CAD) and 1,852 matched controls who remained free of CAD during 6 year follow-up. LCAT levels did not differ between cases and controls but were higher in women than men. Stratification into LCAT quartiles revealed a positive association with plasma LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the unexpected absence of an association with HDL-cholesterol. In mixed-gender analyses, the odds ratio (OR) for future CAD in the highest LCAT quartile versus the lowest was 1.00 [confidence interval (CI): 0.76–1.29, P for linearity = 0.902], although opposite trends were observed in men and women. In fact, high LCAT levels were associated with an increased CAD risk in women (unadjusted OR 1.45, CI: 0.94–2.22, P for linearity = 0.036). In contrast to our studies in carriers of LCAT mutations, the current data show that low LCAT plasma levels are not associated with increased atherosclerosis in the general population.  相似文献

A new procedure for the graphic analysis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on proteins is introduced, in which comprehensive visualization of results and pattern recognition is greatly facilitated. The method involves determining the conformational and helicoidal parameters for each structure entering the analysis via the method "Curves," developed for proteins by Sklenar, Etchebest, and Lavery (Proteins: Structure, Function Genet. 6:46-60, 1989) followed by a novel computer graphic display of the results. The graphic display is organized systematically using conformation wheels ("dials") for each torsional parameter and "windows" on the range values assumed by the linear and angular helicoidal parameters, and is present in a form isomorphous with the primary structure per se. The complete time evolution of dynamic structure can then be depicted in a set of four composite figures. Dynamic aspects of secondary and tertiary structure are also provided. The procedure is illustrated with an analysis of a 50 psec in vacuo simulation on the 58 residue protein, bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI), in the vicinity of the local minimum on the energy surface corresponding to a high resolution crystal structure. The time evolution of 272 conformational and 788 helicoidal parameters for BPTI is analyzed. A number of interesting features can be discerned in the analysis, including the dynamic range of conformational and helicoidal motions, the dynamic extent of 2 degrees structure motifs, and the calculated fluctuations in the helix axis. This approach is expected to be useful for a critical analysis of the effects of various assumptions about force field parameters, truncation of potentials, solvation, and electrostatic effects, and can thus contribute to the development of more reliable simulation protocols for proteins. Extensions of the analysis to present differential changes in conformational and helicoidal parameters is expected to be valuable in MD studies of protein complexes with substrates, inhibitors, and effectors and in determining the nature of structural changes in protein-protein interactions.  相似文献

Eurasian badgers Meles meles habitually deposit droppings and other scent marks at latrines, which may be associated with territorial defence, and communicate information related to group and individual identity and status, and food resources. Understanding patterns of latrine distribution contributes to our understanding of badger social behaviour, and may be relevant to managing the risks of transmission of bovine tuberculosis from badgers to cattle. We investigated the distribution of badger latrines relative to habitat composition in a high-density badger population occupying a 7 km2 area of diverse landscape in south-west England. Results indicated that the frequency and density of badger latrines varied according to land use, with woodland and linear landscape features (particularly hedges and stone walls) being positively selected. The number of latrines decreased significantly with distance from linear features. Grassland was negatively selected given its availability, but contained the highest number of latrines. The tendency for latrines to be associated with particular habitat types covaried spatially across the study area. We present a habitat selection probability function, based on the output of our analyses, to allow comparison of observed versus expected latrine counts per habitat type at different sites. Habitat manipulation on farmland may offer opportunities to manage exposure of cattle to badger latrines. However, our analyses indicate that other factors (perhaps demographic or environmental) may also exert a substantial local influence on latrine location.  相似文献

We develop a formal framework for the optimal allocation of limited resources that includes and clarifies the interplay between individual optimization and the resulting effects at the population level. As an example, in regard to the evolution of sexual recombination, the paradox of the twofold cost of sex is avoided by distinguishing between the evolution of recombination and the subsequent emergence and stability of different mating types as a result of individual optimization within a population that benefits from recombination.
