Effect of soil K, Ca and Mg saturation and endomycorrhization on growth and nutrient uptake of sugar maple seedlings 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nutrient imbalances of declining sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stands in southeastern Quebec have been associated with high exchangeable Mg levels in soils relative to soil K and Ca. A greenhouse experiment was set up to test the hypothesis that the equilibrium between soil exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg ions influences the growth and nutrient status of sugar maple seedlings. Also tested was whether endomycorrhization can alter nutrient acquisition under various soil exchangeable basic cations ratios. Treatments consisted of seven ratios of soil exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg making up a total base saturation of 58%, and a soil inoculation treatment with the endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus versiforme (control and inoculated), in a complete factorial design. Sugar maple seedlings were grown for 3 months in the treated soils. Plant shoot elongation rate, dry biomass and nutrient concentrations in foliage were influenced by the various ratios of soil cations. The predicted plant biomass and foliar K concentration were highest at a soil Ca saturation of 38%, a soil K saturation of 12%, and a soil Mg saturation of 8%. Potassium concentration in foliage was dependent on the level of Ca and Mg saturation in the soil when soil K saturation was close to 12%. Foliar Ca and Mg levels were more dependent on their corresponding levels in soil than foliar K. Colonization by G. versiforme did not influence seedling growth and macronutrient uptake. The results confirm that growth and nutrition of sugar maple are negatively affected by imbalances in exchangeable basic cations in soils. 相似文献

Although it is well accepted that cytokinins (CKs) regulate processes such as leaf senescence and stomatal conductance, data on CKs in the canopy of mature trees are lacking in the literature. Here we report the first in situ sampling for determination of CKs in mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum) canopy layers. The upper canopy showed a distinct seasonal pattern in total CK content, while the lower canopy remained relatively unchanged. This project was supported by an NSERC Discovery Grant to RJNE. 相似文献

We evaluated the association of red coloration with senescence in sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) leaves by assessing differences in leaf retention strength and the progression of the abscission layer through the
vascular bundle of green, yellow, and red leaves of 14 mature open-grown trees in October 2002. Computer image analysis confirmed
visual categorization of leaves as predominantly green, yellow or red, and chemical quantification of leaf pigment concentrations
verified that leaf color reflected underlying differences in leaf biochemistry. Significantly lower chlorophyll concentrations
within red and yellow leaves indicated that senescence was more advanced in leaves from these color categories relative to
green leaves. Among leaf types, only red leaves contained high concentrations of anthocyanins. There were significant differences
in leaf retention capacity among color categories, with the petioles of green leaves being the most firmly attached to twigs,
followed by red and then yellow leaves. Microscopic analysis indicated that yellow leaves had the most advanced extension
of the abscission layer through the vasculature, with green and red leaves having significantly less abscission layer progression
than yellow. A more limited progression of the abscission layer through vascular bundles may be evidence of delayed leaf senescence
that could extend resorption of mobile leaf constituents. Together, results from this study suggest an association between
leaf anthocyanin content and functional delays in senescence. 相似文献

Calcium/strontium and 87Sr/86Sr ratios in foliage can be used to determine the relative importance of different soil sources of Ca to vegetation, if the
discrimination of Ca/Sr by the plant between nutrient sources and foliage is known. We compared these tracers in the foliage
of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) to the exchange fraction and acid leaches of soil horizons at six study sites in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA.
In a previous study, sugar maple was shown to discriminate for Ca compared to Sr in foliage formation by a factor of 1.14 ± 0.12.
After accounting for the predicted 14% shift in Ca/Sr, foliar Ca/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios closely match the values in the Oie horizon at each study site across a 3.6-fold variation in foliar Ca/Sr ratios.
Newly weathered cations, for which the Ca/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios are estimated from acid leaches of soils, can be ruled out as a major Ca source to current foliage. Within sites,
the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the soil exchange pool in the Oa horizon and in the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm increments of the mineral soil are similar
to the Oie horizon and sugar maple foliar values, suggesting a common source of Sr in all of the actively cycling pools, but
providing no help in distinguishing among them as sources to foliage. The Ca/Sr ratio in the soil exchange pool, however,
decreases significantly with depth, and based on this variation, the exchange pool below the forest floor can be excluded
as a major Ca source to the current sugar maple foliage. This study confirms that internal recycling of Ca between litter,
organic soil horizons and vegetation dominate annual uptake of Ca in northern hardwood ecosystems. Refinement of our understanding
of Ca and Sr uptake and allocation in trees allows improvement in the use of Ca/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios to trace Ca sources to plants. 相似文献

Seedlings of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) were grown for 2 years in mono-culture and mixed-culture and at three fertility levels. Following the second growing season, senescent leaves were analysed for N concentration, acid hydrolysable substances (AHS), and nonhydrolysable remains (NHR). A litter sub-sample was then inoculated with indigenous soil microflora, incubated 14 weeks, and mass loss was measured. Litter-N was significantly higher at medium than at poor fertility, as well as in yellow birch than in sugar maple litter. The species effect on litter-N increased with increasing fertility. At medium fertility, litter-N of sugar maple litter was lower in mixed-culture than in mono-culture. AHS, NHR as well the NHR/N ratio were significantly higher in yellow birch than in sugar maple litter. At medium fertility, the NHR/N ratio of sugar maple litter was significantly lower in mono-culture than in mixed-culture. Mass loss was significantly greater at medium and rich fertility than at poor fertility, and in yellow birch than in sugar maple litter. At poor fertility, mixed-litter decomposed at a rate comparable to yellow birch, whereas at medium and rich fertility, mixed-litter decomposed at a rate comparable to sugar maple. There was a significant positive relationship between litter-N and mass loss. A similar positive relationship between NHR and mass loss was presumed to be a species effect on decomposition. Results support the hypothesis that species × fertility and species × mixture interactions can be important determinants of litter quality and, by implication, of site nutrient cycling. 相似文献

Effect of removal of snow cover in winter was investigated in an 80-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stand in southern Quebec. We hypothesized that winter soil frost would induce some of the decline symptoms observed in sugar maple stands in southern Quebec in the early 1980's. Snow was continuously removed from around trees for a one week (partial removal) or for a four-month period (complete removal) during the 1990–1991 winter. Foliage and soils were sampled periodically during the summer of 1991. The complete snow removal treated trees showed decreased leaf water potential and increased peroxidase activity over most of the growing season. Foliar Ca was reduced in both snow removal treatments early in the growing season while foliar N was reduced in the complete snow removal trees late in the growing season. Soil NO

and K+ were elevated in both snow removal treatments at various times throughout the growing season. Prolonged soil frost in a sugar maple stand can induce lower leaf water potential, higher leaf peroxidase activity and early leaf senescence during the following growing season. Soil frost may have reduced nutrient uptake without affecting significantly the leaf nutrient status. 相似文献

The effect of an artificially induced drought was investigated in an 80-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stand in southern Quebec. We hypothesized that leaf peroxidase activity would increase, and that leaf nutrient deficiencies typical of declining trees (K, Mg) would develop during the year following the imposition of the drought. An impermeable tarpaulin was placed on the ground at the base of the trees during the summer of 1991. Foliage and soils were sampled periodically during the summers of 1991 and 1992. The treated trees showed decreased leaf water potential and increased peroxidase activity over most of the 1991 growing season. Diameter growth was significantly reduced in 1992. Soil NO

Leaf cytokinins (CKs) were profiled within four locations throughout the inner and outer layers of a mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum) canopy. Leaf CK was associated with leaf gas exchange activity and some corresponding microclimate variables. Both inner and outer layers in the upper canopy had higher concentrations of leaf CKs than the lower canopy layers and the difference was comprised primarily by riboside forms of CK. Transpiration (E) showed a similar pattern to leaf CK content, with significantly higher rates in the upper canopy. There was, however, no clear pattern discernable in stomatal conductance (gs), other than it tended to be higher in the outer canopy layers. The upper/outer canopy showed a significantly different environment than all other canopy positions with higher photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), ultra-violet light (UV-B) and leaf temperature. Simple linear regression analysis showed that the nucleotide CK group (including iPNT, cis- and trans-[9RMP]Z, [9RMP]DZ) was positively related to PAR. Exogenous applications of benzylaminopurine (BAP), showed that low concentrations of BAP reduced E and g s, and indicated that CK may help regulate stomatal aperture. The similar patterns in E and CK content suggest that CKs and leaf gas exchange are functionally connected. 相似文献

The use of strontium isotopes and ratios of alkaline earth elements (i.e., 87Sr/86Sr and Ca/Sr) to trace Ca sources to plants has become common in ecosystem studies. Here we examine the relative uptake of
Ca and Sr in trees and subsequent accumulation in foliage. Using a whole-watershed Ca addition experiment at the Hubbard Brook
Experimental Forest in N.H., we measured the uptake of Ca relative to Sr in foliage and roots of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), and red spruce (Picea rubens). Vegetation was analyzed for Ca and Sr concentrations and the 87Sr/86Sr ratio. A comparison of the Ca/Sr ratio in the vegetation and the Ca/Sr ratio of the applied mineral allows for the calculation
of a discrimination factor, which defines whether Ca and Sr are incorporated and allocated in the same ratio as that which
is available. A discrimination factor greater than unity indicates preferential uptake of Ca over Sr; a factor less than unity
reflects preferential uptake of Sr over Ca. We demonstrate that sugar maple (SM) and yellow birch (YB) have similar and small
discrimination factors (1.14 ± 0.12,1σ and 1.16 ± 0.09,1σ) in foliage formation and discrimination factors of less than 1
in root formation (0.55–0.70). Uptake into beech suggests a larger discrimination factor (1.9 ± 1.2) in foliage but a similar
root discrimination factor to SM and YB (0.66 ± 0.06,1σ). Incorporation into spruce foliage occurs at a much slower rate than
in these other tree species and precludes evaluation of Ca and Sr discrimination in spruce foliage at this time. Understanding
the degree to which Ca is fractionated from Sr in different species allows for refinement in the use of 87Sr/86Sr and Ca/Sr ratios to trace Ca sources to foliage. Methods from this study can be applied to natural environments in which
various soil cation pools have different 87Sr/86Sr and Ca/Sr ratios. The results reported herein have implications for re-evaluating Ca sources and fluxes in forest ecosystems. 相似文献

A comprehensive understanding of Ca cycling in an ecosystem is desirable because of the role of this element in tree mineral nutrition and its status as a major base cation on the soil exchange complex. The determination of the origin of Ca in forests is particularly indicated in regard of important changes linked to acid inputs and intensive logging. Natural strontium isotopes are increasingly used as tracers of Ca in forest ecosystems for qualitative and quantitative assessments. Nevertheless this method is limited to relatively simple systems with two sources of nutrients. Some recent studies coupled Sr/Ca or Sr/Ba ratios to Sr isotopic measurements in order to solve more complex systems. Such method has however associated with it some uncertainties: this approach assumed that Ca, Sr and Ba behave similarly throughout the ecosystem and does not take into account the Ca biopurification processes occurring in some tree’s organs which can alter element ratio. The present work focuses on two deciduous species covering large areas in Europe: European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). In order to test the similarity of behaviour between Ca, Sr and Ba, their concentrations were measured extensively in the major compartments of two forest ecosystems. In parallel, the discrimination process inside tree organs was studied in 23 stands for beech and 10 stands for oak. We found that Sr and Ca behave similarly in all soil and tree compartments. By contrast, Ba and Ca appear to have contrasting behaviours, especially in streams, soil solution and soil exchange complex (no correlations between element concentrations). Sr/Ba and Ba/Ca ratios must therefore be used with care as tracer of Ca. The Ca biopurification is absent in roots and slight in bole wood but is large in bark, twigs and leaves. The discrimination factors (DF) between wood and leaves are characteristic of the two species studied and do not change significantly as a function of the soil Ca status (acidic or calcareous soils). Therefore, strontium–calcium DF can be used as a correction factor of the Sr/Ca ratio of leaves when this ratio is used in connection with Sr isotopic ratios. This correction allows to solve systems of tree nutrition with more than two sources of Ca. 相似文献

A comparison between Ca and Sr cycling in forest ecosystems 总被引:7,自引:1,他引:7
In favourable conditions, the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of the Sr delivered by rain and soil mineral weathering differ. Assuming that Ca and Sr behave similarly
in forest ecosystems, several authors have used the 87Sr/86Sr variation in forest compartments to calculate the contribution of rain and mineral weathering to Ca fluxes and pools. However,
there are a number of experimental reports showing that Ca and Sr may behave differently in the soil and in the plant. We
have tested this Ca–Sr analogy in the field by measuring the variation of Sr and Ca concentrations, fluxes and pools in spruce,
beech and maple stands on granite, sandstone and limestone. Results show that (1) variations of Ca and Sr concentrations are
generally correlated at each level of the ecosystems. (2) In spruce on acid soils, a preferential uptake of Ca over Sr occurs
(Aubure spruce Sr/Ca = 0.8×10−3; soil exchangeable Sr/Ca between 2 and 6×10−3). On calcareous soils, a preferential uptake of Sr over Ca by spruce may occur. (3) In spruce and beech on acid and calcareous
soils, a preferential translocation of Ca over Sr from roots to leaves occurs ((Sr/Ca) in leaves was between 10 and 90% of
that in roots). (4) The biological cycling of Ca and Sr leads to an enrichment of the upper soil layers in Ca and Sr. Compared
to Sr, Ca accumulates in the upper layer of acid soils because Ca cycling through litterfall is favoured over Sr cycling,
and possibly because of the selectivity of acid organic exchangers for Ca.

The concentrations of Ca, Sr, Ba and Mn were determined in up to five successive needle age classes from 54 individual Norway spruce trees [Picea abies (L.) Karst] from nine different sites. The accumulation behaviour was found to be very nonuniform, going from an increase with needle age to a decrease; irregular patterns were also found. The type of accumulation is largely site specific. The increasing behaviour can in most cases be approximated by a simple arithmetic function. All four elements usually show the same accumulation pattern, the similarities being closest between Ca and Mn and least between Ca and Ba. It is postulated that the similarity between the four elements is due to their precipitation and storage as oxalates. The similarity between Ca, Sr and Ba is observed at all concentrations, that with Mn only at concentrations larger than 300 g/g. Mn at small concentrations (< 50 g/g) shows a decreasing pattern and no similarity at all with Ca, Sr and Ba, but behaves similar to mobile elements. 相似文献

Changes in the abscisic acid (ABA) levels in embryo axes of seeds, belonging to the orthodox (Norway maple — Acer platanoides L.) and recalcitrant (sycamore — Acer pseudoplatanus L.) categories, were investigated throughout maturation using an ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test. Concentration
of ABA in embryo axes substantially differed depending on species and sampling date. ABA was always higher in Norway maple
except at the end of seed maturation when ABA content was similar in both species. During maturation ABA decreased in both
species but the decline was more marked in Norway maple than in sycamore (11 vs. 3 fold). These species also differed in the pattern of ABA changes, which in sycamore embryo axes was very regular, while
in Norway maple a sharp decrease was recorded after acquisition by the seeds of tolerance to desiccation. Dehydration of embryo
axes of Norway maple caused a further significant decrease of ABA level. In contrast, in dehydrated sycamore embryo axes ABA
content did not decrease, but slightly increased. The role of ABA in desiccation tolerance and dormancy of Norway maple and
sycamore seeds is discussed. 相似文献

Competitive effects of the invasive shrub,Lonicera maackii (Rupr.) Herder (Caprifoliaceae), on the growth and survival of native tree seedlings 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Invasive plants are often associated with reduced cover of native plants, but rarely has competition between invasives and natives been assessed experimentally. The shrub Lonicera maackii, native to northeastern Asia, has invaded forests and old fields in numerous parts of eastern North America, and is associated with reduced tree seedling density in Ohio forests. A field experiment was conducted to test the effects of established L. maackii on the survival and growth of transplanted native tree species. The experiment examined above-ground competition (by removing L. maackii shoots) and below-ground competition (by trenching around transplanted seedlings). The effects of above-ground competition with L. maackii were generally more important than below-ground competition, though both were detected. Shoot treatment was the key determinant for the survival of all species except P. serotina, whereas trenching only enhanced survival for A. saccharum caged and P. serotina, and only in the shoot removal treatment. For the surviving seedlings, L. maackii shoot removal increased growth of A. saccharum seedlings protected with cages, but actually reduced the growth of unprotected Q. rubra and A. saccharum seedlings, indicating that L. maackii shoots confer some protection from deer browsing. Significant interactions between root and shoot treatment on Q. rubra growth parameters, specifically greatest growth in the shoot present & trenched treatment, is attributed to protection from deer browsing combined with release from below-ground competition. Despite this protective function of L. maackii shoots, the overall effect of this invasive shrub is increased mortality of native tree seedlings, suggesting it impacts the natural regeneration of secondary forests. 相似文献

Canopy structure and vertical patterns of photosynthesis and related leaf traits in a deciduous forest 总被引:37,自引:0,他引:37
Canopy structure and light interception were measured in an 18-m tall, closed canopy deciduous forest of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) in southwestern Wisconsin, USA, and related to leaf structural characteristics, N content, and leaf photosynthetic capacity. Light attenuation in the forest occurred primarily in the upper and middle portions of the canopy. Forest stand leaf area index (LAI) and its distribution with respect to canopy height were estimated from canopy transmittance values independently verified with a combined leaf litterfall and point-intersect method. Leaf mass, N and A
max per unit area (LMA, N/area and A
max/area, respectively) all decreased continuously by over two-fold from the upper to lower canopy, and these traits were strongly correlated with cumulative leaf area above the leaf position in the canopy. In contrast, neither N concentration nor A
max per unit mass varied significantly in relation to the vertical canopy gradient. Since leaf N concentration showed no consistent pattern with respect to canopy position, the observed vertical pattern in N/area is a direct consequence of vertical variation of LMA. N/area and LMA were strongly correlated with A
max/area among different canopy positions (r2=0.81 and r2=0.66, respectively), indicating that vertical variation in area-based photosynthetic capacity can also be attributed to variation in LMA. A model of whole-canopy photosynthesis was used to show that observed or hypothetical canopy mass distributions toward higher LMA (and hence higher N/area) in the upper portions of the canopy tended to increase integrated daily canopy photosynthesis over other LMA distribution patterns. Empirical relationships between leaf and canopy-level characteristics may help resolve problems associated with scaling gas exchange measurements made at the leaf level to the individual tree crown and forest canopy-level. 相似文献

Patterns of seedling recruitment may have persistent effects on population and community processes. Assuming seed availability is not limiting, the environmental sieve (i.e., the suite of factors influencing seed germination and seedling emergence and survival) determines how many seedlings establish and, most importantly, where they do so. In this study, we identify the spatial structure of some resources and abiotic conditions known to be significant for tree seedling emergence and survival and determine how these environmental factors influence the establishment of Fagus grandifolia, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, and Ostrya virginiana in a deciduous forest of southern Québec (Canada). We expect an increase from Fagus, through Acer and Fraxinus, to Ostrya in the control of environmental variables on seedling emergence and survival, because of differences in the seed size of these species. Density of newly-emerged seedlings of all four species showed positive spatial autocorrelation at distances of up to ca. 10 m. Environmental variables were also structured at the same spatial scale, except for soil moisture. Acer seedling emergence pattern was positively correlated to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and the pattern of Fraxinus to soil N and moisture. Seedling survival was not spatially autocorrelated for any of the four species, although it was positively density-dependent in Acer and Fagus. In only Ostrya was seedling survival correlated (positively) to one of the environmental variables studied, i.e., PPFD. Overall, environmental variables were spatially less heterogeneous than seedling emergence and survival. Either seed availability was not saturating or factors not considered here, such as competition and predation (the intensity of which often varies with resources and/or abiotic conditions), modified the influence that the physical environment had on patterns of seedling establishment. Our prediction of a greater environmental control on seedling emergence and survival in small-seed species was not totally confirmed. 相似文献

Concentrations of constituent isothiocyanate-yielding glucosinolates (IYG) declined seasonally in cauline leaves and stems of Cardamine cordifolia, sampled in montane Colorado. All five constituents (isopropyl, 2-butyl, isobutyl, benzyl and 2-phenyl-ethyl glucosinolates) were correlated positively with total concentration over the growing season. In contrast, no seasonal decline was discerned for total and constitutent IYG concentrations in roots and basal leaves, and constituents showed a mixed pattern of positive and negative correlations with total amount. Vegetative organs thus constitute two compartments relative to glucosinolate metabolism. In above-ground stems and associated cauline leaves, IYG concentrations decline individually and in concert over the growing season. In below-ground rhizomes and associated roots and basal leaves, individual compounds fluctuate in concentration, but in the aggregate do not decline seasonally. Metabolic fluxes of individual glucosinolates within and between vegetative organs, as well as changes in total concentrations, may influence feeding by herbivores. 相似文献

Photosynthetic mechanisms have been compared in leaves and, separately, in stems of Egeria densa Planch. In order to correlate the structural and functional characteristics of the two organs (1) the ultrastructural features of leaves and stems have been studied and (2) their photosynthetic activity has been evaluated by measuring in vivo both oxygen evolution and the kinetics of chlorophyll fluorescence. The results confirm the aquatic behaviour of the leaf which is able to utilize inorganic C supplied both as CO2 and HCO3–. In this respect, the different wall organization found in the two cell layers of the leaf is particularly interesting, since it could be related to the known polar mechanism of inorganic-C uptake. The stem, by contrast, behaves rather as an aerial organ, needing very high CO2 concentrations in the aquatic environment in order to carry out photosynthesis. In the stem, the aerenchyma plays a role in supplying the green cells with gaseous respiratory CO2, thus facilitating the photosynthetic activity of the submerged stems. The authors are grateful to C.U.G.A.S. Given the essential role played by phenol metabolism in many resistance responses to different types of stress, the aim of the present work was to determine how different application rates of calcium may influence this metabolic process. Increased calcium in the nutrient solution in which tobacco plants were grown considerably reduced the foliar concentration of phenolic compounds. Calcium clearly exerted a positive influence on the activities of enzymes (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase) involved in the metabolism of the phenolics. High dosages of calcium (5 mM) promoted more oxidation than synthesis of these compounds, thus explaining the lower concentration of the phenolics. 相似文献
