Phytochemical or nutrient analyses of primate diets have revealed clues to their food selection in a single species. On the other hand, few interspecific comparisons of phytochemical or nutrient composition of primate diets have been made, although diets are considered to differ in phytochemical or nutrient content from primate species to species, since different species have different body weights and different morphological and physiological characteristics. I compared the nutrient content of diet between patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and tantalus monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops tantalus) living sympatrically in Cameroon. Patas subsisted on a smaller number of food items, most of which were also tantalus food items. Then, I compared the protein–fiber ratio and the available energy content of the food items eaten by patas (patas foods) with those items eaten only by tantalus (tantalus foods). Both variables were higher in patas than tantalus foods, although there was no significant difference in available energy of plant foods. Next, when I performed discriminant analysis for patas foods and tantalus foods, employing the above two variables, a discriminant function with positive coefficients for both variables was obtained. The mean discriminant-function score of patas foods was higher than that of tantalus foods. Despite being somewhat larger in weight, patas selectively fed on a smaller number of foods of higher quality than did tantalus. I discuss why the results are inconsistent with a well known body weight–diet relationship (Jarman–Bell principle). Energy-efficient locomotion enables patas to exploit not only small dispersed food items of high quality but also areas where high-quality foods are distributed in clumps. Previously we found that Maximum Ingested Bite Size (Vb)—the largest piece of food that an animal will ingest whole without biting first—scales isometrically with body size in 17 species of strepsirrhines at the Duke Lemur Center (DLC). However, because this earlier study focused on only three food types (two with similar mechanical properties), it did not yield results that were easily applied to describing the broad diets of these taxa. Expressing Vb in terms of food mechanical properties allows us to compare data across food types, including foods of wild lemurs, to better understand dietary adaptations in lemurs. To this end, we quantified Vb in five species of lemurs at the DLC representing large and small frugivores and folivores using ten types of food that vary widely in stiffness and toughness to determine how these properties relate to bite sizes. We found that although most species take smaller bites of stiffer foods, this negative relationship was not statistically significant across the whole sample. However, there is a significant relationship between bite size and toughness. All three of the more frugivorous taxa in our sample take significantly smaller bites of tougher foods. However, the two more folivorous lemurs do not. They take small bites for all foods. This suggests that the species most adapted to the consumption of tough foods do not modulate their ingestive sizes to accommodate larger pieces of weak foods. Carmine is one of the original dyes certified by the Biological Stain Commission (BSC). Until now it has lacked both an assay procedure for dye content and a means to positively identify the dye. The methods for testing carmine in the laboratory of the BSC have been revised to include spectrophotometric examination at pH 12.5-12.6 to determine that the dye is carmine (λmax=530-335 nm). The maximum absorbance of a solution containing 100 mg of dye per liter of water, adjusted to pH 12.5-12.6, which provides a relative measure of dye content, should lie in the range 1.2 to 1.8. If the dye is not carmine, spectrophotometry at pH 1.9-2.1 shows whether it is carminic acid (λmax=490-500 nm) or 4-aminocarminic acid (λmax=525-530 nm). The latter two dyes, which are also called carmine when sold as food colorants, have physical properties different from those of true carmine. The functional tests for carmine as a biological stain are Orth's lithium-carmine method for nuclei, Southgate's mucicarmine method for mucus, and Best's carmine method for glycogen.  相似文献

1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the ω3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5ω3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3ω3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos‐aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos‐aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6ω3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.  相似文献

The latter dye is relatively new to the food trade as an acid-stable red colorant and may eventually enter the biological stains market. The assay proposed here is a two-step procedure using quantitative spectrophotometric analysis at high pH (12.5-12.6) followed by a qualitative scan of a low pH (1.90-2.10) solution. Carmine is distinct at high pH, and the remaining dyes are easily distinguished at low pH. Four instances of mislabeling are documented from 18 commercial products, but the mislabeled dyes were not certified dyes. Samples from nearly all lots of carmine certified by the Biological Stain Commission from 1920 to 2004 proved to be carmine, but they varied widely in dye content. Batches from 1920 through the 1940s were significantly richer in dye content. Variability has been extreme since 2000, and most of the poorest lots have been submitted since 1990.  相似文献

The stingrays Potamotrygon amandae and Potamotrygon falkneri are nonnative species established in the Upper Paraná basin. Although they are widely distributed, few studies on their diets or respective metabolic responses exist. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the dietary composition, trophic niche breadth and lipid/protein concentrations in muscle and hepatic tissues of these two species, as well as the interrelationships between them. The individuals were collected in two areas on the Upper Paraná River. The stomachs and samples of muscle and liver tissues were taken for analysis. A broad dietary spectrum was observed for both species, along with differences in dietary composition, with a higher consumption of detritus by P. amandae and Baetidae by P. falkneri. No differences were observed in the trophic niche breadth. Regarding the metabolic variables, differences were only found in the hepatic protein, with a higher content observed in P. falkneri. A significant positive correlation was observed between items of animal origin and detritus with muscle protein for this species. This shows that such feeding habits, which are characteristic of a generalist, influenced the metabolism of the species and possibly contributed to the successful adjustment of the species to new habitats in the Upper Paraná River.

Much research into food‐borne human pathogens has focused on transmission from foods of animal origin. However, recent investigations have identified fruits and vegetables are the source of many disease outbreaks. Now believed to be a much larger contributor to produce‐associated outbreaks than previously reported, norovirus outbreaks are commonly caused by contamination of foods from hands of infected workers. Although infections with Shiga toxin‐producing E. coli O157 have been linked to beef more often than to any other food product, severe outbreaks have been traced to consumption of contaminated radish sprouts and pre‐packaged spinach. Similarly, while infections with Salmonella have mainly been linked to consumption of foods of animal origin, many outbreaks have been traced to contaminated fresh produce. E. coli O157 binds to lettuce leaves by alternative mechanisms involving the filamentous type III secretions system, flagella and the pilus curli. Association of Salmonella with fresh produce appears to be serovar‐specific involving flagella, curli, cellulose, and O antigen capsule. A better understanding of plant, microbiological, environmental, processing and food handling factors that facilitate contamination will allow development of evidence‐based policies, procedures and technologies aimed at reducing the risk of contamination of fresh produce.  相似文献

Consumers are aware of foods containing microcomponents that may have positive effects on health maintenance and disease prevention. In ruminant milk, meat, and milk products; these functional food components include eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n3), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n3), 9c11t-conjugated linoleic acid, and vaccenic acid (11t-18:1). Modifying ruminal microbial metabolism of fatty acid in rumen through animal diet formulation is an effective way to enhance these functional fatty acids in ruminant-derived food products. However, it requires an understanding of the interrelationship between supply of lipid through the diet and rumen fermentation. Lipids in ruminant diets undergo extensive hydrolysis and biohydrogenation in the rumen. Apparent transfer efficiency of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid from feed to milk is very low (1.9 to 3.3%), which is, to a large extent, related to their extensive biohydrogenation in the rumen. Therefore, feeding a rumen-protected supplement containing eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, can be used to bypass the rumen. Ruminant-derived foods also contain different types of conjugated linoleic acid isomers, which are intermediates of rumen biohydrogenation of linoleic acid (9c12c-18:2). The predominant isomer of conjugated linoleic acid is 9c11t, which has numerous health benefits in animal models. The concentration of conjugated linoleic acid in ruminant-derived food products can be significantly enhanced through animal diet modification. We conclude that most current functional food products from ruminants have potential for their health-supporting properties, and for this market to succeed, an evidence-based approach should be developed in humans.  相似文献

The enzymatic reduction of sinapic acid ester content in canola meal using polyphenol oxidase from the fungusT. versicolor was investigated. To determine the effectiveness of this new process, the results obtained using two spectrophotometric methods and an HPLC analytical method for assaying sinapic acid ester content in the treated and untreated meals were compared. It was found that all the methods gave practically the same results when the samples from untreated canola meals were analysed. However, both of the spectrophotometric methods overestimated the sinapic acid ester content in the enzymatically treated meal by 7%–20%, as compared to the results obtained using HPLC. It was found that the sensitivity limits for the spectrophotometric methods used for the determination of sinapic acid ester content in enzymatically treated canola meals were 2.67 g and 1.47 g phenolics/kg meal for the direct and chemical spectrophotometric methods respectively. A correlation between the results obtained using the spectrophotometric and HPLC methods is given. The enzymatic treatment resulted in a negligible amount of phenolics in the treated meal.  相似文献

Though biological invasions constitute one of the biggest threats for global biodiversity, our understanding of the mechanisms that enable invasive species to outperform native species is still limited, especially, in terms of behavior. Most available studies have examined behavioral traits which favor invasive species on the later stages of invasion, however, our knowledge on earlier stages, namely, when alien species face novel environments and must exploit new resources, remains obscure. Here, we focus on one crucial behavioral trait, finding food. The Italian wall lizard (Podarcis siculus) has been widely introduced and established viable populations in S. Europe and N. America. We examined whether P. siculus has enhanced exploratory behavior and abilities to find food compared to two native congeneric species with which it may come in contact in the near future, an insular endemic (P. milensis) and a widely distributed lizard (P. erhardii). We performed a Y-maze experiment, in which we varied arm markings in a standard way to prevent learning. Podarcis siculus was more efficient than its congenerics in finding and consuming food. This exploitative superiority was persistent, more frequent and repetitive. Interesting behavioral differences were also detected within the native species. Some P. milensis individuals showed no interest in exploring the maze, while few P. erhardii individuals remained rather indifferent to food even after detecting it. Our results suggest that the invasive P. siculus displays behavioral traits that could provide better opportunities for survival in the new environment and thus facilitate establishment even in the presence of congenerics. This provides further support to the idea that behavior plays a crucial role in animal invasions.

The ecologies of two sympatric primates,Saguinus fuscicollis andCallicebus moloch, were compared during a four-month field study in southeastern Peru in order to examine the mechanisms by which these primate frugivores minimize competition for food and space.Saguinus fuscicollis andCallicebus moloch were found to differ dramatically both in diet and in use of the shared habitat. Specifically, tamarins and titis showed very little overlap in their choices of food plants or animal foods and they used distinctive foraging styles, exploiting very different parts of the habitat for animal prey. Significant interspecific differences were found in the use of particular support structures and strata within the forest, and in the density of vegetation preferred. These results suggest that resource competition between saddle-backed tamarins and dusky titis is minimal, a fact that could account for the high frequency of free association between the two species and the benign nature of these interspecific contacts.  相似文献

Summary The natural diet of a population of Cepaea nemoralis living in a sand dune system in southwest England was investigated by field observations and examination of crop and faeces contents. The food consisted of dead material from the commoner plants on the site. Very little green matter was eaten and there was little evidence for seasonal variation in the diet.Consumption and egestion rates were measured gravimetrically on natural foods (dead leaves of Taraxacum officinale and Ononis repens) and artificial foods. Consumption rates were temperature dependent over the measured range of 5–20°C and also varied with the food substrate, an artificial food (rat food pellets) being consumed at the highest rate. High variability in the results can probably be linked to the live weight and activity cycles of the snails.Assimilation was estimated as the difference between consumption and egestion, since a trial of the ash-ratio method proved unsuitable with this animal. Assimilation efficiency did not vary with temperature over the range studied, but was dependent on food substrate, the two artificial foods (rat food pellets and lettuce leaves) being assimilated more efficiently (71–73%) than natural foods (30–44%).Faeces produced from the digestive gland could be distinguished and were measured separately. The amount produced was very small compared to the gut faeces, but increased significantly when a relatively indigestible food was used.  相似文献

Improving oil and protein quality for food and feed purposes is an important goal in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) breeding programs. Rapeseed contains phytosterols, used to enrich food products, and sinapate esters, which are limiting the utilization of rapeseed proteins in the feed industry. Increasing the phytosterol content of oil and lowering sinapate ester content of meal could increase the value of the oilseed rape crop. The objective of the present study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for phytosterol and sinapate ester content in a winter rapeseed population of 148 doubled haploid lines, previously found to have a large variation for these two traits. This population also segregated for the two erucic acid genes. A close negative correlation was found between erucic acid and phytosterol content (Spearman’s rank correlation, r s = −0.80**). For total phytosterol content, three QTL were detected, explaining 60% of the genetic variance. The two QTL with the strongest additive effects were mapped on linkage groups N8 and N13 within the confidence intervals of the two erucic acid genes. For sinapate ester content four QTL were detected, explaining 53% of the genetic variance. Again, a close negative correlation was found between erucic acid and sinapate ester content (r s = −0.66**) and the QTL with the strongest additive effects mapped on linkage groups N8 and N13 within the confidence intervals of the two erucic acid genes. The results suggests, that there is a pleiotropic effect of the two erucic acid genes on phytosterol and sinapate ester content; the effect of the alleles for low erucic acid content is to increase phytosterol and sinapate ester content. Possible reasons for this are discussed based on known biosynthetic pathways. Diet analysis of potential small mammals pest species is important for understanding feeding ecology and evaluating their impact on crops and stored foods. Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes), distributed in Southwest China, has previously been reported as a farmland pest. Effective population management of this species requires a better understanding of its diet, which can be difficult to determine with high taxonomic resolution using conventional microhistological methods. In this study, we used two DNA metabarcoding assays to identify 38 animal species and 65 plant genera from shrew stomach contents, which suggest that A. squamipes is an omnivorous generalist. Earthworms are the most prevalent (>90%) and abundant (>80%) food items in the diverse diet of A. squamipes. Species of the Fabaceae (frequency of occurrence [FO]: 88%; such as peanuts) and Poaceae (FO: 71%; such as rice) families were the most common plant foods identified in the diet of A. squamipes. Additionally, we found a seasonal decrease in the diversity and abundance of invertebrate foods from spring and summer to winter. Chinese mole shrew has a diverse and flexible diet throughout the year to adapt to seasonal variations in food availability, contributing to its survival even when food resources are limited. This study provides a higher resolution identification of the diet of A. squamipes than has been previously described and is valuable for understanding shrew feeding ecology as well as evaluating possible species impacts on crops.  相似文献

Radioresistance of the spores of 46 strains of Bacillus was determined based on their dose-survival curves. The spores were produced on three kinds of sporulating medium.

The variations in the radioresistance among species and strains were found, and also the radioresistance of spores depended upon the sporulating medium. The shapes of dose-survival curves are closely associated with the taxonomical groups of the genus Bacillus.

Radioresistance of the spores showed no apparent correlation to their contents of dipicolinic acid, calcium and magnesium, but a slight correlation was observed between radioresistance and the molar ratio of Ca to DPA or Mg to Ca. Radioresistance of the spores in some groups correlated to their GC content, but no correlation was found in the other species. There was no correlation between heat resistance and radioresistance.  相似文献

该研究采用毛白杨(Populus tomentosa)为试验材料,分析了温室条件下沙培幼苗对短期高硼胁迫(1、5、10 mmol/L硼酸)下的叶片生长、光合参数和硼转运蛋白的响应特征。结果显示:(1)与对照(0.05 mmol/L硼酸)相比,1 mmol/L硼酸处理导致毛白杨幼苗叶片叶绿素荧光参数上调,活性氧含量上升,树苗基部叶片出现少量黑色坏死斑;5 mmol/L硼酸胁迫下,叶片净光合速率、气孔导度和蒸腾速率下调,胞间二氧化碳浓度上升,叶绿素荧光参数和过氧化氢含量进一步上调,超氧阴离子含量较1 mmol/L硼酸胁迫时下调但仍然高于对照,除顶部叶片之外的其他叶片上出现大量坏死斑;10 mmol/L硼酸胁迫下,气体交换参数、叶绿素荧光参数和活性氧含量与5 mmol/L硼酸胁迫时相似,所有叶片均在平行于次级叶脉的方向出现呈带状分布的坏死斑。(2)毛白杨幼苗根和茎硼含量在硼胁迫条件下与对照相比变化幅度较小,而叶片硼含量在5 mmol/L和10 mmol/L硼酸胁迫下比对照显著上升,此时硼转移系数和生物富集系数均维持较高的水平。(3)硼转运蛋白(BOR)基因家族成员中PtoBOR4和PtoBOR8在根中的表达水平随着外界硼浓度的增加呈先上升后下降的趋势;在茎中,PtoBOR3基因下调表达,PtoBOR5上调表达;在叶片中,PtoBOR4表达先上升后下降,而PtoBOR7和PtoBOR8上调表达。研究表明,毛白杨幼苗叶片叶绿素荧光参数、活性氧、气体交换参数及硼转运蛋白基因家族表达对高硼胁迫较为敏感,硼胁迫症状在较短的时间内在叶片上以坏死斑的形式出现,可能与其较强的控制根系硼浓度的能力和向地上部分迅速运输硼的能力有关。  相似文献

Anthropogenic changes and fragmentation of natural habitats often exert a negative effect on resource availability and distribution, and the nutritional ecology and feeding behavior of nonhuman primates. The goals of this study are to examine food choice and to identify the nutritional profile of foods consumed by the Critically Endangered black snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri). To accomplish our study goals, we presented cafeteria-style feeding trials of fresh food items collected in the home range of wild black snub-nosed monkeys to the only two captive R. strykeri, and compared the nutritional profiles of the leafy foods (buds, young, and mature leaves, 100 items from 70 plant species) selected with those avoided (54 items from 48 plant species). Overall, the results indicate that captive R. strykeri selected foods that were higher in moisture (Mo; 77.7%), crude protein (CP; 21.2%), total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC; 34.9%), and phosphorus (P; 0.37%) while tending to avoid foods with a neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of greater than 46.8%. Leaves collected in autumn and selected by the monkeys were characterized by a slightly higher amount of metabolizable energy (ME) than those rejected (1,350 kJ/100 g vs. 1,268 kJ/100 g). In contrast, the protein content of foods collected and consumed during the spring was greater (22.9%) than in autumn (16.4%). Random Forests modeling, an ensemble learning method, indicated that the proportion of Mo, NDF, ME, CP, P, and TNC were among the most important factors in predicting which items were consumed by the captive R. strykeri during spring and autumn. On the basis of the nutritional profile of foods consumed across the two seasons, we identified 18 nutrient-rich native plant species that we recommend for use in ex- and in-situ conservation management and reforestation programs to provide long-term access to a nutritionally adequate diet.  相似文献

Aims: To study the occurrence of Cronobacter spp. in foods and to investigate the phenotypic properties of the strains isolated. Methods and Results: A total of 53 strains of Cronobacter spp. isolated from 399 food samples were identified using conventional biochemical methods and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. Foods of plant origin were the most frequently contaminated samples. No Cronobacter spp. were found in infant milk formula, wheat‐based infant food, pasteurized and raw cow milk, mincemeat, chicken, chickpea and potato dumpling powder. The individual species were identified as Cronobacter sakazakii (54·7%), Cronobacter malonaticus (28·4%), Cronobacter dublinensis (7·5%), Cronobacter muytjensii (7·5%) and Cronobacter turicensis (1·9%). Cronobacter sakazakii and C. malonaticus belong to biotype 1, 2, 2a, 3, 4 and 5, 5a, respectively. Cronobacter dublinensis strains were subdivided into biotypes 6 and 12. All strains were resistant to erythromycin and two of them were resistant to both erythromycin and tetracycline. Conclusions: Cronobacter spp. were isolated from various food samples pre‐eminently of plant origin and dried food ingredients. Significance and Impact of the Study: These findings will increase and detail our knowledge of the presence and diversity of Cronobacter spp. in foods.  相似文献
