Catinaria grossa is lichenized withDictyochloropsis splendida var.gelatinosa, var. nova. When cultured isolated from the fungus the cells of this variety are covered individually by thick gelatinous envelopes. The phycobionts ofMegalospora gompholoma subsp.gompholoma andM. atrorubicans subsp.australis belong to a new variety ofD. symbiontica, i.e. var.pauciautosporica, which preferentially reproduces by zoo- and aplanospores. The phycobiont ofPseudocyphellaria aurata does not belong toMyrmecia reticulata as formerly thought, but toDictyochloropsis symbiontica. Specimens from one locality in Tenerife and from New Zealand are lichenized with a strain ofD. symbiontica var.symbiontica, those from another locality in Tenerife with a strain ofD. symbiontica var.pauciautosporica. These strains differ in certain characters from other lichenized strains of these varieties.

Two cytologically distinguishable species have been found in material ofChironomus australis. These species have been calledCh. australis andCh. duplex. Both belong to thepseudothummi-cytological grouping because they have the chromosome arm combinations AE, BF, CD, G.Ch. duplex shows a modified arm pattern due to a tandem fusion of arm G to arm E.—The banding patterns of the polytene chromosomes of the two species are compared to each other and to the Australian standard species,Ch. oppositus. Ch. australis is very close cytologically toCh. oppositus, whileCh. duplex, which is considered a derived species because of the tandem fusion, shows a number of inversion differences from the morphologically similarCh. australis. Ch. duplex is polymorphic for six inversions, four of which are simple inversions, the other two are complex involving also the transposition of some bands.Ch. australis appears to be monomorphic.  相似文献

Genetic studies were employed to rationalize speciation in the yeast genusMetschnikowia. Using haploid cultures derived parasexually or from isolated single ascospores, hybrids were produced between mostMetschnikowia taxa. The results provided strong evidence for the acceptance ofM. bicuspidata as type of the genus, and enabled clarification of the relationships among the recognized species. Speciation was based primarily on ascus and ascospore morphology, as classification based on physiological properties was shown to be ineffective.Metschnikowia bicuspidata var.californica var. nov. is described, and some possible evolutionary trends are discussed.Partial support for J. I. P. from a C.S.I.R.O., Australia, Overseas Postgraduate studentship is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献

The distribution of two sedge species was studied in two mires which differ in abiotic environments and in distribution ofPhragmites australis. Carex lasiocarpa var.occultans dominated in nutrient-poor valley mire, andCarex thunbergii var.appendiculata dominated in nutrient-rich flood plain subject to water fluctuations.Phragmites australis grew well in nutrient-rich conditions. The distribution ofC. lasiocarpa showed a strong negative correlation withP. australis coverage, whereasC. thunbergii coverage was not affected byP. australis. The leaf area per dry leaf mass (specific leaf area: SLA) ofC. thunbergii increased with shading byP. australis, but that ofC. lasiocarpa was stable. The SLA flexibility ofC. thunbergii to light interception might enable this species to invadeP. australis patches in nutrient-rich environments. The residual nutrient ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus (the ratio of the residual nutrient content at the end of the growing season to peak nutrient content) in the vegetative ramet ofC. thunbergii was 1.7 times higher than that ofC. lasiocarpa. This low residual ratio may indicate effective nutrient recovery to storage organs. The effective nutrient recovery inC. lasiocarpa might enable this species to grow even in nutrient-poor environments. However, it may be difficult forC. lasiocarpa to expand its habitat to nutrient-rich areas whereP. australis dominates as it is not shade tolerant.  相似文献

TheLaboulbenia exigua group comprises seven species. Three of these species are described as new to science, and two new varieties ofL. exigua and one new variety ofL. balazucii are distinguished and described. New taxa areL. yamadae, L. consobrina, L. gebleri, L. exigua var.yaeyamae, L. exigua var.melanolabiata andL. balazucii var.exilis. This fungus group is characterized by grayish yellow to gray-brown thalli with simple inner and outer appendages, dark-spotted or streaked receptacles, and perithecia containing narrow ascospores 3–4–(–5) µm in width; the species and varieties occur onChlaenius (Carabidae) and closely allied taxa. The bilobed apex of mature perithecium, owing to the rounded apices of the posterior apical cells of the outer wall cell rows, and 3-celled, curved inner appendage in young thalli, and the deciduous antheridium are also characteristic of this group.  相似文献

Two new species ofConiochaeta, isolated from Japanese soils, are described and illustrated:C. cephalothecoides, which is characterized by dark brown ascomata clothed with short setae, cylindrical asci and ovoid to almond-shaped or pyriform ascospores with a longitudinal germ slit; andC. dumosa, which is characterized by dark brown ascomata clothed with short setae and dense hyphal hairs, cylindrical asci and ellipsoid-fusoid ascospores with a longitudinal germ slit. These species are distinguished from most species of the genus by the unique cephalothecoid peridium of their ascomata. The associated anamorphs of both species are assignable to the form-genusLecythophora.  相似文献

Summary A survey was made of the yeasts occurring in the intestinal tract of wild species ofDrosophila occurring in the Yosemite Region of California. Two hundred and forty one yeasts, representing 42 species and varieties, were identified. Each isolate was obtained from a different fly. Almost half of the isolates belong toSaccharomyces. The most common species in this genus wereS. montanus (36 isolates),S. veronae (30 isolates),S. cerevisiae var.tetrasporus (22 isolates) andS. drosophilarum (13 isolates). Further species are listed in Table 1.Zygosaccharomyces fermentati Naganishi was shown to be a distinct species and not a synonym ofS. cerevisiae. In order to avoid confusion with another yeast of the same name, it has been proposed to change the nameZ. fermentati toS. montanus Naganishi. Two new species ofSaccharomyces were described,S. wickerhamii andS. kluyveri. S. mangini var.tetrasporus has been renamedS. cerevisiae var.tetrasporus. A non-cellobiose attacking strain ofS. drosophilarum has been designated tentativelyS. drosophilarum var.acellobiosa. A new species of the genusPichia was described asP. xylosa. Saccharomyces pastori andSaccharomyces pini were transferred to the genusPichia on the basis of arguments given in the preceding paper. A new species ofTrichosporon was described asTr. aculeatum on the basis of the presence of characteristic needlelike cells. Common species besides those mentioned inSaccharomyces wereHansenula angusta (19),Kloeckera apiculata (15),Kl. magna (13), andTorulopsis stellata (10). Other genera represented wereHanseniaspora, Cryptococus, Rhodotorula, Candida andOospora. Evidence was obtained that many species of imperfect genera consist of distinctly different physiological types.  相似文献

The relationships among 65 basidiomycetous yeast strains were determined by one-dimensional electrophoresis of SDS-solubilized whole-cell proteins. Protein profiles were compared by the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r). The strains investigated represented species from the generaCystofilobasidium, Filobasidium, Filobasidiella, Kondoa, Leucosporidium, Mrakia andRhodosporidium. Except for the genusMrakia, all species constituted separate protein electrophoretic clusters. The species of the genusMrakia (M. frigida, M. gelida, M. nivalis andM. stokesii) show highly similar protein patterns, suggesting that these four species may be synonymous. Strains of two varieties ofFilobasidiella neoformans, F. neoformans var.neoformans andF. neoformans var.bacillispora, could not be differentiated by protein electrophoresis. For the delineation of the protein electrophoretic clusters of the yeasts studied, literature data relying on other criteria, such as DNA base composition, carbon source utilization patterns, enzymatic protein electrophoregrams, ubiquinone systems, DNA-DNA homology and rRNA sequence data were used. It was demonstrated that a database of SDS-protein patterns provides a valuable tool for the identification of yeasts.  相似文献

Summary Decaying petioles of giant hogweed,Heracleum mantegazzianum Sommier & Levier, are used as a breeding site by six species ofDrosophila and the drosophilidScaptomyza pallida. The most numerous parasitoid species associated with this community isLeptopilina australis. BecauseL. australis was previously unknown in western Europe, we present the characters to distinguish it form its close relativeL. clavipes. Experiments on host species selection and survival ofL. australis showed that this parasitoid mainly usesD. limbata as host. Olfactometer experiments showed thatL. australis is attracted by the odour of decaying hogweed stalks, especially when these contain larvae ofD. limbata. L. australis is also strongly attracted by the odour of stinkhorns, a habitat in which it has never been found in nature.D. phalerata is the dominant fly species in stinkhorns, and is not a host ofL. australis. We offer a possible functional explanation for this unexpected habitat choice, by showing thatD. transversa andD. kuntzei, both species found to breed in fungi, are also suitable hosts forL. australis. We also discuss habitat choice with regard to a proposed phylogeny of theLeptopilina species in temperate Europe. Finally, we discuss niche overlap ofL. australis with the otherLeptopilina species.  相似文献

Morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted on 12 strains ofFusarium, deposited in MAFF asF. subglutinans (≡F. moniliforme var.subglutinans≡F. sacchari var.subglutinans) orFusarium sp. because they formed aerial conidia in false heads in the dark. These strains were resolved as three distinct species within theGibberella fujikuroi species complex. A new species,F. fractiflexum, and two species new to Japan,F. circinatum andF. concentricum, are described and illustrated and their morphological features are discussed.Fusarium fractiflexum, isolated from diseased yellow leaf spots ofCymbidium spp., is differentiated from other fusaria based on its yellowish colonies and aerial conidia formed in false heads in the dark and in zigzag-like conidial chains under black light. Japanese strains ofF. circinatum also formed elongate, coiled sterile hyphae. Phialidic aerial conidia with a pointed apex and a wedgeshaped base were found inF. concentricum cultured under black light and represent a new diagnostic character of the species, in addition to colonies with alternating concentric rings when cultured on PDA. Based on DNA sequences of the β-tubulin gene and two other loci, strains ofF. fractiflexum were resolved phylogenetically as members of the Asian clade of theG. fujikuroi species complex. In addition, Japanese strains ofF. circinatum andF. concentricum were phylogenetically identical to the ex-type strains.  相似文献

Phenotypic and phenological properties ofMenyanthes trifoliata L. were investigated within and outside of aPhragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex. Steud. canopy in a floating peat mat in Mizorogaike Pond, Central Japan. Under theP. australis canopy,M. trifoliata adjusted its phenotypic properties to the conditions of decreased light by increasing leaf blade area, decreasing leaf blade thickness and elongating petioles. The earlier expansion of leaves ofM. trifoliata within theP. australis community than outside the community was advantageous in terms of allowing the plant in the mixed community to produce as much dry matter as possible before the foliage ofP. australis could overgrow it. Despite the harmful effect ofP. australis onM. trifoliata's vegetative growth and reproduction, the latter species can persist in aP. australis community by changing its phenotypic and phenological properties.  相似文献
