When CCC was applied as a spray to the leaves of Brassica oleraceaL. (Brussels sprout) grown in pots, plant height and mean internodelength were reduced. The effects appeared more slowly and wereless pronounced than those previously observed when CCC hadbeen applied to the soil; other differences were that root growthwas not inhibited, stem weight was only significantly reducedat the highest rate of application (2 per cent), and stomatalnumber per unit area of lower leaf epidermis was not affected. In common with soil applications, leaf thickness, stem diameter, and the percentage moisture contents of the leaves were allincreased by foliar applications. In a further experiment theprogress of wilting was observed in untreated plants and inplants treated with CCC applied either to the leaves or to thesoil. The rates of water loss and the moisture contents of theleaf laminae of the treated plants, after a period of wilting, were not significantly different from the controls. The treatedplants, however, looked less ‘wilted‘ for the changein angle of the leaf lamina to the stem was less and their leaveswere therefore held more upright.  相似文献

Significant differences in response to soil moisture stress(SMS) and restricted root zone volume (RRZV) were found in twocultivars of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (‘Forrest’and ‘Williams’) plants grown under controlled-environmentconditions. Leaf water potentials of SMS-treated plants were0·4-0·6 MPa lower than those of controls and stomata1conductances 23-56% lower. In the case of RRZV treatment, however, there were no differences in either parameter. Initiation ofnew leaves as reflected in the plastochron index was stronglyreduced by SMS but was unaffected by RRZV. Photosynthetic rates(CO2 fixation dm2 of leaf) of plants given SMS were reducedby 11-21% while those of RRZV-treated plants were unaffected.SMS caused a strong preferential allocation of dry matter tothe root at the expense of the shoot in both cultivars. RRZV,however, had no effect on assimilate distribution in ‘Forrest’and only slightly favoured root growth in ‘Williams.’Carbohydrate concentrations of both alcohol-soluble and insolublefractions were increased significantly by SMS, especially inthe leaves, but were little affected by RRZV. Nitrogen concentrationin the root fraction was reduced by 22-24% and that in the leafand stem fractions by 7-14% under SMS but was not affected appreciablyby RRZV. Phosphorus concentration in the leaf, stem, and rootfractions was reduced by 45-65% under SMS but was relativelyunaffected by RRZV. These findings suggest that SMS and RRZVare basically different in their mechanism of action and thatthe impairment of growth resulting from these two stresses mayinvolve different physiological processes. Our results alsoindicate that the suppressive effects of small containers onplant growth do not necessarily result from inadvertent SMS. Key words: Drought, Container effects, Glycine max (L.) The beta-ray gauging technique was used to measure the relativechanges occurring in the water content of sour orange and sweetlime leaves as a result of soil wetting and drying cycles. Promethium-147served as the radiation source and was found suitable for measuringchanges in citrus leaf thickness within the range of 20 mg/cm2(when soil moisture content was at ‘pot capacity’)to 10 mg/cm2 (when soil moisture dropped to wilting point).By using the correlation between beta-ray gauging measurements, leaf thickness, and relative turgidity, it is possible to determinethe status of water in citrus leaves under different soil moistureconditions.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution of 14C were determined in 47-day-oldtomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) 24 h after theapplication of [14C]sucrose to individual source leaves fromleaves 1–10 (leaf 1 being the first leaf produced abovethe cotyledons). The first inflorescence of these plants wasbetween the ‘buds visible’ and the ‘firstanthesis’ stages of development. The predominant sink organs in these plants were the root system, the stem, the developing first inflorescence and the shoot ‘apex’(all tissues above node 10). The contribution made by individualsource leaves to the assimilate reaching these organs dependedupon the vertical position of the leaf on the main-stem axisand upon its position with respect to the phyllotactic arrangementof the leaves about this axis. The root system received assimilateprincipally from leaf 5 and higher leaves, and the stem apexfrom the four lowest leaves. The developing first inflorescencereceived assimilates mainly from leaves in the two orthostichiesadjacent to the radial position of the inflorescence on thevertical axis of the plant; these included leaves which weremajor contributors of 14C to the root system (leaves 6 and 8)and to the shoot apex (leaves 1 and 3). This pattern of distributionof assimilate may explain why root-restriction treatments andremoval of young leaves at the shoot apex can reduce the extentof flower bud abortion in the first inflorescence under conditionsof reduced photoassimilate availability. Plants of two cultivars of Callistephus chinensis (Queen ofthe Market and Johannistag) were grown in 8 h of daylight perday with one of the following treatments given during the 16h dark period: (a) darkness—‘uninterrupted night’,(b) I h of light in the middle of the dark period—a ‘nightbreak’, (c) I min of light in every hour of the dark period—‘cycliclighting’, (d) light throughout—‘continuouslight’. The plants receiving uninterrupted dark periods remained compactand rosetted in habit with small leaves, while leaf expansion, stem extension, and flower initiation were promoted in all threeillumination treatments (b, c, d). Although these three treatmentsproduced similar increases in leaf area, continuous light wasthe most effective for the promotion of both stem growth andflower initiation while cyclic lighting was generally more effectivethan a I-h night break. Continuous light also caused more dry matter to be divertedto stems at any given vegetative dry weight and it was shownthat the stem weight ratio of both varieties was correlatedwith stem length.  相似文献

Flooding the soil for 5–7 d caused partial desiccationin leaves of pea plants (Pisum sativum. L. cv. ‘Sprite’).The injury was associated with anaerobiosis in the soil, a largeincrease in the permeability of leaf tissue to electrolytesand other substances, a low leaf water content and an increasedwater saturation deficit (WSD). Desiccating leaves also lackedthe capacity to rehydrate in humid atmospheres, a disabilityexpressed as a water resaturation deficit (WRSD). This irreversibleinjury was preceded during the first 4–5 d of floodingby closure of stomata within 24 h, decreased transpiration,an unusually large leaf water content and small WSD. Leaf waterpotentials were higher than those in well-drained controls. Also, there was no appreciable WRSD. Leaflets detached fromflooded plants during this early phase retained their watermore effectively than those from controls when left exposedto the atmosphere for 5 min. Stomatal closure and the associated increase in leaf hydrationcould be simulated by excising leaves and incubating them withtheir petioles in open vials of water. Thus, such changes inflooded plants possibly represented a response to a deficiencyin the supply of substances that would usually be transportedfrom roots to leaves in healthy plants (negative message). Ionleakage and the associated loss of leaf hydration that occurswhen flooding is extended for more than 5 d could not be simulatedby isolating the leaves from the roots. Appearance of this symptomdepended on leaves remaining attached to flooded root systems, implying that the damage is caused by injurious substances passingupwards (positive message). Both ethylene and ethanol have beeneliminated as likely causes, but flooding increased phosphorusin the leaves to concentrations that may be toxic. The solanifolia mutant (sf/sf) of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)produces leaves consisting of leaflets with entire margins, unlike the lobed leaflets of normal plants. Normal plants treatedwith gibberellic acid (GA3) produced leaves with entire marginswhereas mutant plants exposed to 2-chloroethyl-trimethyl ammoniumchloride (CCC)—an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis—producedlobing of leaflets. The leaf area of the mutant was significantlygreater than that of the normal, but was not significantly differentfrom GA3-treated normal leaves. Similarly, in CCC-treated mutantleaves the leaf area was not different from that of normal untreatedleaves. These observations suggest that the sf/sf mutation affectsthe leaf shape through its effect on endogenous gibberellinsand/or inhibitory substances. A detailed morphological study of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth) was conducted under ‘vegetative’and ‘reproductive’ growth conditions (short andlong photoperiods) and at different temperatures. Perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Westerwolds ryegrass (Loliummuhiflorum Lam.) were compared during vegetative growth. Prairie grass had higher leaf appearance rates (leaves per tillerper day) and lower site filling (tillers per tiller per leafappearance interval) than the ryegrass species. Tillering rates(tillers per tiller per day) were also lower, except under vegetativeconditions at 4C. Low tiller number in prairie grass was notdue to lack of tiller sites but a result of poor filling ofthese sites. Lower site filling occurred because of increaseddelays in appearance of the youngest axillary tiller and lackof axillary tillers emerging from basal tiller buds. In prairiegrass, no tillers came from coleoptile buds while only occasionallydid prophyll buds develop tillers. Low tiller number in prairiegrass was compensated for by greater tiller weight. Prairiegrass had more live leaves per tiller, greater area per leafand a high leaf area per plant. Considerable variation between cultivars was found in prairiegrass. The cultivar ‘Bellegarde’ had high leaf appearance, large leaves and rapid reproductive development, but had lowlevels of site filling, tillering rate, final tiller numberand herbage quality during reproductive growth. ‘Primabel’tended to have the opposite levels for these parameters, while‘Grasslands Matua’ was intermediate and possiblyprovided the best balance of all plant parameters. prairie grass, Bromus willdenowii Kunth, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., Westerwolds ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam., temperature, photoperiod, leaf appearance, leaf area, tillering, site filling, tillering sites, yield  相似文献

Tomato plants were grown with limited or luxury water supplyand given nitrogen either as the ammonium ion or the nitrateion. The ‘active’ iron fractions of the leaves asextracted by etherized tenth molar hydrochloric acid showedno relationship with the total iron but a very significant linearrelationship was found between the active iron fraction andthe ratio of total phosphorus to total iron. Recalculation of results presented by other investigators formaize plants grown in soil with various levels of moisture, phosphorus and iron also showed a highly significant linearrelationship between the active iron fraction and the ratioof total phosphorus to total iron. Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis has previously been shown toalter the response of sorghum leaves to probable non-hydraulicsignals of soil drying. Our objectives here were to determine:(1) how changes in phosphorus nutrition affect this root-to-shootsignalling in sorghum, (2) if mycorrhizal symbiosis can affectthe signalling process independently of effects on host P nutrition, and (3) how two Glomus species compare in their influence onsignalling. Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘G1990A’ plants weregrown with root systems split between two pots. The 332 experimentaldesign included three levels of mycorrhizae (Glomus intraradicesSchenck & Smith, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerd., non-mycorrhizal),three levels of phosphorus fertilization and two levels of water(fully watered, half-dried). Declines in leaf elongation with soil drying were more consistentin non-mycorrhizal than mycorrhizal plants. Relative growthrate (RGR) of both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants initiallydeclined when water was withheld from about half of the rootsystem. With further soil drying, RGR of mycorrhizal plantseventually returned to control levels, while RGR of non-mycorrhizalplants remained depressed throughout the drying episode. Bythe end of the drying episode, mycorrhizal symbiosis had eliminateddrying-induced declines in total plant leaf length. Shoot androot dry weight declines of half-dried plants were not affectedby mycorrhizae. Declines in stomatal conductance with soil dryingwere larger and more frequent in non-mycorrhizal than mycorrhizalplants. Leaf osmotic potential and relative water content remainedsimilar in control and half-dried plants during drying, suggestingthat altered leaf behaviour of half-dried plants was due tosome non-hydraulic factor. The two fungi did not differ substantiallyin their influence on leaf behaviour. The applied phosphorustreatments did not affect either growth or stomatal responseof halfdried plants to the root-to-shoot signal, but lengthdeclines were related to actual leaf phosphorus concentrations.Rate of soil drying did not appear to influence ultimate growthreductions. We conclude that mycorrhizal fungi can modify leaf growth responseto the root-to-shoot signal of soil drying, and that this mycorrhizaleffect can occur independently of mycorrhizal effects on plantsize or phosphorus nutrition. However, plant size and nutrition, which are commonly affected by mycorrhizal symbiosis, can alsomodify the signalling process. Lilium tongiflorum Thunb. cv. ‘Nellie White’ plantswere grown in different day/night temperature (DT/NT) environmentsto determine the anatomical basis for differential responsesof stem elongation to DT and NT. Lilium plants were forced in1986 and 1987 under 25 and 12 different DT/NT environments, respectively, with temperatures ranging from 14 to 30 °C.Parenchyma and epidermal cell length and width were measuredin stem tissue (1987) and epidermal cell length and width weremeasured in leaf tissue (1986). Total cell number per internodeand vertical cell number per internode were calculated. Stemparenchyma and stem and leaf epidermal cell length increasedlinearly as the difference (DIF) between DT and NT increased(DIF = DT —- NT), i.e. as DT increased relative to NT.DIF had no effect on stem parenchyma width, stem and leaf epidermalcell width, or cell number per internode. Data suggested thatstem elongation responses to DIF are elicited primarily througheffects on cell elongation and not division. Infection of seedling tomatoes with Verticillium albo-atrum checked growth but did not result immediately in leaf yellowing. Localized wilting occurred in some plants 2 weeks after the check to growth was evident. 8 weeks after inoculation, dry weights of leaf, stem and root were decreased by 72, 70, and 65% respectively.
Of the growth attributes studied, leaf area was most reduced by infection and this was due to a failure of the leaves to expand rather than to a fall in the rate of leaf production. Neither water nor nitrogen appeared to be limiting factors in this respect. The water content of infected leaves was not reduced until 6 weeks after inoculation, when leaf yellowing and necrosis had also appeared. The percentage N contents of stem, root and leaf of infected plants exceeded those of the healthy controls 24 days after inoculation. N uptake was not seriously impaired until 21 days later.
The photosynthetic efficiency of the green leaves of infected plants was reduced. The mean values for net assimilation rates were: Healthy 0.47 and infected 0.39 g./dm.2/week.
Plants, in which two-thirds of the root system had been killed by crushing, were placed in contact with mycelium in soil. This initial root injury did not significantly affect the growth of infected plants.
The data accord with a toxin theory of damage to infected plants, but the slow development of chlorosis and wilting symptoms in the young plants suggested a greater tolerance to the toxin than is found in older plants.  相似文献

The effect of gibberellic acid, CCC (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) and B 9 (N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid) was studied on growth of potato plants in pots. Growth was analysed on four occasions and changes in habit defined in terms of internode lengths, leaf areas and growth of lateral branches. Soaking seed pieces for 1 hr. in GA solution caused six internodes to elongate greatly, an effect not prevented by CCC applied when the shoot emerged from the soil. The effects on internode extension were determined by the length of the interval between GA treatment and CCC treatment. Treatment at emergence with CCC shortened all internodes and more CCC applied 4 weeks later had no effect. Late application of CCC or B9 shortened the top two lateral branches, usually very long in untreated plants. The regulators affected leaf growth differently from internode growth: usually growth regulators had less effect on leaf growth. Effects on growth depended on when the regulators were applied. Treatment with GA alone inhibited bud development at higher nodes than in untreated plants; when followed by late treatment with CCC, lateral growth at higher nodes was also less. CCC retarded development of lateral branches especially when applied early. B9 had a similar effect to CCC applied late. When regulators retarded growth of lower laterals, upper laterals often grew more than in untreated plants. Treatments did not affect the number of leaves on the main stem at first but later GA hastened senescence. GA increased the number of leaves on lateral stems, and the effect was enhanced by CCC. CCC alone increased the number of first- and second-order lateral leaves. GA lengthened and CCC shortened stolons. The effect of CCC persisted throughout the life of the plant. CCC or B 9 shortened stolons whenever applied. CCC hastened tuber initiation but slowed tuber growth. CCC at first retarded formation of lateral tubers but had no effect on the ultimate numbers of lateral and terminal tubers. The value of E (net assimilation rate) did not alter with time. CCC applied at emergence increased E, probably because it hastened tuber initiation and temporarily increased sink capacity. Although tubers formed earlier with CCC, their growth was slower and their demand for carbohydrate was also less. The increase in second-order laterals in CCC-treated plants indicates that they utilize carbohydrate that would normally go to tubers. This experiment also demonstrates that crowding leaves by shortening stems did not diminish E, possibly because another over-riding process (bigger sinks) offsets the effect of shading.  相似文献

The effect of tetraploidy on leaf characteristics and net gasexchange was studied in diploid (2x ) and autotetraploid (4x) ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osb.) and ‘Femminello’ lemon (Citrus limon (L.)Burm. f.) leaves. Comparisons between ploidy levels were madeunder high irradiance (I) in a growth chamber or low total Iin a glasshouse. Tetraploids of both species had thicker leaves, larger mesophyll cell volume and lower light transmittance thandiploids regardless of growth I. Mesophyll surface area perunit leaf area of 2x leaves was 5–15% greater than on4x leaves. Leaf thickness and mesophyll cell volume were greaterin high I leaves than low I leaves. In high I, average leafarea was similar for 2x and 4x leaves, whereas in low I it was30% greater in 4x than in 2x leaves. Nitrogen and chlorophyllconcentration per cell increased with ploidy level in both growthconditions. The ratio of chlorophyll a:b was 25% greater in2x than in 4x leaves. When net CO2assimilation rate (ACO2) wasbased on leaf area, 4x orange leaves had 24–35% lowerACO2than their diploids. There were no significant differencesin ACO2between 2x and 4x orange or lemon leaves when expressedon a per cell basis. Overall, lower ACO2per unit leaf area oftetraploids was related to increase in leaf thickness, largermesophyll cell volume, the decrease in mesophyll area exposedto internal air spaces, and the lower ratio between cell surfaceto cell volume. Such changes probably increased the resistanceto CO2diffusion to the site of carboyxlation in the chloroplasts. Fiskeby V soya bean was grown from seed germination to seedmaturation with two contrasting patterns of nitrogen metabolism:either wholly dependent on dinitrogen fixation, or with an abundantsupply of nitrate nitrogen, but lacking root nodules. The carbonand nitrogen economies of the plants were assessed at frequentintervals by measurements of photosynthesis, shoot and rootrespiration, and organic and inorganic nitrogen contents. Plantsfixing atmospheric nitrogen assimilated only 25–30 percent as much nitrogen as equivalent plants given nitrate nitrogen:c. 40 per cent of the nitrogen of ‘nitrate’ plantswas assimilated after dinitrogen fixation had ceased in ‘nodulated’plants. The rates of photosynthesis and respiration of the shootsof soya bean were not markedly affected by source of nitrogen;in contrast, the roots of ‘nodulated’ plants respiredtwice as rapidly during intense dinitrogen fixation as thoseof ‘nitrate’ plants. The magnitude of this respiratoryburden was calculated to increase the daily whole-plant respiratory loss of assimilate by 10–15 per cent over thatof plants receiving abundant nitrate. It is concluded that ‘nodulated’plants grew more slowly than ‘nitrate’ plants inthese experiments for at least two reasons: firstly, the symbioticassociation fixed insufficient nitrogen for optimum growth and, secondly, the assimila tion of the nitrogen which was fixedin the root nodules was more energy-demanding in terms of assimilatethan that of plants which assimilated nitrogen by reducing nitratein their leaves.  相似文献

The effects of CCC and B 9 on the growth habit of potato differed between varieties. CCC diminished stem lengths and dry weight more than Bo because CCC was applied early when shoots emerged from the soil, but B 9 was applied about 3 weeks later when several leaves had formed. In some varieties lateral stem growth was increased by treatment and in others decreased. There was an inverse relation between main stem and lateral stem growth so that varieties with vigorous main stem growth had poor lateral growth and vice-versa. Treatment with the growth-regulators diminished leaf dry weight of main stem leaves less than leaf area, but the degree of magnitudes of the changes depended on the variety. Both regulators lessened net assimilation rate. Net assimilation rate and dry matter per unit area of leaf were inversely related, possibly because accumulation of substances in leaves decreases photosynthesis. Stolon dry weight was positively correlated with main stem leaf area. There was a direct relation between stem length and tuber dry weight, suggesting that tuber initiation occurs at different stem lengths in different varieties. Tubering was earliest in Epicure and latest in King Edward. Epicure had the greatest tuber weight and smallest stem length.  相似文献

Further evidence is provided that the environment of sugar-beet seedlings, or growth substances applied to seedlings, continues to influence growth when the plants are later in other environments. Sugar-beet seeds were germinated at 20 °C in 8, 16 or 24 h photoperiods of constant light intensity, i.e. with different amounts of total radiation. When the seedlings had two leaves (15–18 days old) they were transferred to large pots in the glasshouse. Some seedlings were treated with (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) either sprayed on the leaves or applied to the soil, at different times. The treatments affected areas of individual leaves throughout the growing period; plants raised in 24 h photoperiod had the largest leaves, and those in 8 h photoperiod the smallest. Consequently, 24 h plants had most dry matter and 8 h plants least. Plants given most radiation produced leaves fastest and CCC applied early increased the rate, but as the leaves were smaller, except late in 1967, and died sooner, the leaf area duration was less and so yields were less. CCC applied later did not affect leaf production. There was no interaction between amount of radiation and CCC treatment. Twenty-four hour plants had the greatest net assimilation rate (E) early. CCC decreased E early, but increased it later and more when sprayed on the leaves than when applied to the soil. Some factor, possibly pot size, eventually restricted growth and probably diminished the effect of the treatments applied to the seedlings.  相似文献

Both under glasshouse conditions and in a constant environmentwith light from fluorescent tubes, mustard plants' treatmentwith (2 chloro-ethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CCC) respondedby an increase in total leaf area. In the glasshouse the increasewas due to the production of more lateral leaves, and in thegrowth chambers to the enlargement of stem leaves, since lateralbranches did not form. Despite the increase in area, the netassimilation rate fell; this may be attributable to an effectof CCC on the photosynthetic mechanism or to an increase inthe mutual shading of leaves, but it is more probable that theinhibition of stem growth also caused by CCC decreases the demandfor photosynthate and leaves photosynthesise less. The leafarea of mustard (a long-day plant) is increased also by short-daytreatment, and here again there is a concomitant shorteningof the stem. Chlorophyll content, both per leaf and per unit area, and totaldry matter per unit area, were increased in tobacco plants grownin culture solutions containing CCC. The treatment affectedthe distribution of nitrogen, increasing the amount per leafand decreasing it per stem.  相似文献

Complete submergence of rice plants (Oryza sativa L. cv. ‘IR42’)in dilute nutrient solution for 3–6 d almost stopped theaccumulation of dry matter, depressed soluble carbohydrate concentrationby over 75% and promoted chlorosis in fully expanded leaves.Increase in fresh weight by the shoots was not impaired. Extensionby the youngest visible leaf was stimulated. Extension by thenext leaf to appear was retarded by submergence. These growthresponses to submergence were associated with a 1-5-fold increasein the partial pressure of endogenous ethylene (ethene). Applying ethylene (0.3–0.35 Pa) in the gas-phase to non-submergedplants reproduced some, but not all, of these effects of submergence. Thus, greater leaf extension and chlorosis of submerged plantscould be attributable to accumulated ethylene but neither theslow relative growth rate nor the decreased extension of leavesemerging after the start of submergence could be so attributed. Two cultivars (‘FR13A’ and ‘Kurkaruppan’)already known to tolerate submergence, differed little fromsubmergence-intolerant ‘IR42’ in their relativegrowth rate and soluble carbohydrate concentration during submergence. However, their underwater leaf extension was less than in ‘IR42’and chlorosis was much less prevalent, especially in ‘FR13A’.Similarly, ethylene supplied to non-submerged plants was a lesseffective promotor of leaf extension and chlorosis in the twosubmergence tolerant cultivars. Application of 1.0 kPa carbondioxide in the gas-phase prevented the chlorosis response toethylene. The results indicate that accumulated ethylene is a likely causeof fast leaf extension and chlorosis in submergence intolerantforms of rice, particularly when amounts of dissolved carbondioxide are minimal.
