1. Using a replicated survey design at the catchment scale, we compared the composition and diversity of diatom communities in three stream groups in the Middle Hills of Nepal: semi-natural reference (Arun Valley), enriched by agricultural runoff (Likhu Khola) and grossly polluted by sewage (Kathmandu Valley). We sampled riffles at all sites; in the Kathmandu Valley and Likhu Khola we also sampled diatoms in pools and on vegetation.
2. Species richness and diversity H' were significantly higher in agricultural streams than in either organically polluted streams or references. Community composition, as shown by principal components analysis, varied significantly between all three stream types due to differences in the abundances of species characteristic of organic enrichment (Kathmandu Valley), moderate enrichment (Likhu Khola) or undisturbed hillstreams (Arun Valley).
3. Few species varied in relative abundance between pools, riffles and vegetation so that variations in community composition and diversity were stronger between stream groups than between habitats. Samples from any one habitat produced only 75.7% (± 8.6 SD) of the species from three habitats, so that surveys aimed at recording biodiversity may need more comprehensive habitat coverage than surveys for biomonitoring.
4. We conclude that diatom communities can indicate different sources of pollution in Nepalese streams, and advocate further studies to develop this indicator potential over a wider area of the Himalaya. Comparisons between replicate groups of streams selected a priori helped to clarify effects which were sometimes obscured by other survey designs.  相似文献

1. Epilithic and epiphytic diatom community composition were assessed in small streams of the Melbourne region to test the effects of (a) urban density (sub-catchment imperviousness 0–51%) and (b) stormwater drainage intensity (comparing the intensively drained metropolitan area with urban areas of the hinterland, which had open drains and some localized stormwater drainage).
2. Communities separated into three groups: eastern hinterland, western hinterland and a metropolitan group. Separation of eastern and western hinterland groups, and of eastern and western sites within the metropolitan group were best explained by patterns of electrical conductivity, basalt geology and annual rainfall. Separation of metropolitan and hinterland groups, and patterns within the hinterland groups were best explained by nutrient gradients (phosphorus, ammonia and total nitrogen).
3. Nutrient concentrations were not only apparently influenced by urban density but also by effluents from small sewage treatment plants and agricultural activities at a few sites.
4. Species richness did not vary consistently between the metropolitan and hinterland groups but within the western hinterland, sites with low nutrient concentrations tended to be more species-rich than mildly enriched sites.
5. Composition of both diatom and macroinvertebrate communities (assessed in a concurrent study) were sensitive indicators of urban-derived impacts. However, diatoms were better indicators of nutrient enrichment, while macroinvertebrates were better integrative indicators of catchment disturbance.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Patterns of simuliid species richness were examined over a variety of scales at 532 stream sites in the Nearctic (394) and Neotropical (138) regions. In Nearctic streams, species richness of immature blackflies both within and across ecoregions and over two seasons was examined. Stream variables at each site included seston, width, depth, velocity, discharge, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, dominant streambed-particle size, canopy cover, and riparian vegetation. These variables were subjected to a principal component analysis and derived principal components were related back to richness, using regression analysis. At the level of the stream reach, richness was not highly correlated with single-point measurements of stream conditions.
2. Using data from both Nearctic and Neotropical sites, the effect of regional richness on local richness was examined. As regional richness increased, local diversity reached an asymptote in which further increases in regional richness were not matched by increases in local richness. Hence, simuliid communities are best described as saturated (type II) communities, consistent with the current view of lotic communities as non-equilibrium systems.
3. The well-established pattern of greater species richness in tropical regions was not observed in this study. To the contrary, blackfly richness is higher in temperate streams than in tropical streams at both local and regional scales.  相似文献

1. We studied 10 first-order Icelandic streams differing in geothermal influence in separate catchments. Summer temperature (August–September) ranged between 6 and 23 °C.
2. Macroinvertebrate evenness and species overlap decreased significantly with temperature whereas taxon richness showed no response. In total, 35 macroinvertebrate species were found with Chironomidae the dominant taxonomic group. Macroinvertebrate density increased significantly with temperature. Dominant species in the warm streams were Lymnaea peregra and Simulium vittatum . Algal biomass, macrophyte cover and richness were unrelated to temperature. Densities of trout ( Salmo trutta ), the only fish species present, reflected habitat conditions and to a lesser degree temperature.
3. Density of filter-feeders increased significantly with temperature whereas scraper density, the other dominant functional feeding group, was unrelated to temperature. Stable isotope analysis revealed a positive relationship between δ15N and temperature across several trophic levels. No pattern was found with regard to δ13C and temperature.
4. Leaf litter decomposition in both fine and coarse mesh leaf bags were significantly correlated to temperature. In coarse mesh leaf packs breakdown rates were almost doubled compared with fine mesh, ranging between 0.5 and 1.3 g DW 28 days−1. Nutrient diffusion substrates showed that the streams were primarily nitrogen limited across the temperature gradient while a significant additional effect of phosphorous was found with increasing temperature.
5. Structural and functional attributes gave complementary information which all indicated a change with temperature similar to what is found in moderately polluted streams. Our results therefore suggest that lotic ecosystems could be degraded by global warming.  相似文献

The Oregon Coast Range, rich in natural resources, is under increasing pressure from rapid development. The purpose of this study was to examine diatom species patterns in relation to environmental variables in streams of this region. Diatoms, water quality, physical habitat and watershed characteristics were assessed for 33 randomly selected stream sites. Watershed size, elevation, geology, vegetation and stream morphology varied substantially among sites. Streams were characterized by dilute water chemistry and a low percent of fine substrate. A total of 80 diatom taxa were identified. Taxa richness was low throughout the region (median 15, range 10–26). Assemblages were dominated by two adnate species, Achnanthidium minutissimum and Achnanthes pyrenaicum. Diatoms sensitive to organic pollution dominated the assemblages at all sites (median 85%). Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and correlational analysis showed quantitative relationships between diatom assemblages and environmental variables. NMDS axes were significantly correlated with watershed area, watershed geology, conductivity, total nitrogen, total solids and stream width. Diatom-based site classification (Two-way Indicators Species Analysis, (TWINSPAN)) yielded 4 discrete groups that displayed weak correlations with environmental variables. When stream sites were classified by dominant watershed geology, overall diatom assemblages between groups were significantly different (Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) global R = 0.19, p < 0.05). Our results suggest that streams in the coastal region are in relatively good condition. High natural variability in stream conditions in the Oregon Coast Range ecoregion may obscure quantitative relationships between environmental variables and diatom assemblages. A bioassessment protocol that classifies sites by major landscape variables and selects streams along the major human disturbance gradient might allow for detection of early signs of human disturbance in environmentally heterogeneous regions, such as the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

Diatom communities were analyzed in 39 streams located in drainages with varied land-use practices throughout Victoria, Australia. Thirteen water quality parameters were also measured in each stream. Most streams had low HCO3 1- concentrations (low buffering capacity) with >90% of the waters dominated by Na1+ and Cl1-. Phosphate concentrations ranged from 0.003 to 2.0 mg/L. Diatom communities (245 taxa) were strongly correlated with land-use practices, i.e. historic clear cutting, and secondary salinization. Streams influenced by heavy irrigation practices and dryland farming had reduced species diversity and richness compared to systems with low to moderate land use. A nonmetric multidimensional ordination of diatom communities in the 39 streams was conducted. An ANOSIM on the ordination showed that diatom communities in upland watersheds with native forest canopies and low salinization, lowland streams in watersheds with cleared forest canopies, moderate agricultural utilization and salinization, and lowland streams in areas with high irrigation and salinization were all significantly different (p<0.001) from one another. Community ordination techniques showed that both specific conductance (salinity) and phosphorus interacted to determine stream diatom community structure in drainages with high secondary salinization. Drainages with low to moderate agricultural activity and low nutrients, but with a wide range of salinities showed strong associations with the diatom taxa Amphora coffeaeformis, Cymbella pusilla and Entomoneis paludosa, whereas, streams in regions with heavy agricultural practices and high phosphorus had Bacillaria paradoxa, Nitzschia hungarica, N. frustulum and Aulacoseira granulata as numerically important diatoms. In contrast, Rhizosolenia eriensis, Frustulia rhomboides, Eunotia pectinatus and Tabellaria flocculosa were strongly associated with upland streams with fast current, relatively low O-PO4 3- concentrations, low pH, low salinity, and low temperature. In general, the diatom communities in saline streams (3 mS) were similar to those previously reported in saline lakes in Victoria.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The results of a survey of thirty-four stream sites, differing in pH and invertebrate species richness, indicated that the pool of locally available, suitably adapted species was smaller in the acid streams. This plays a part in determining the general pattern of lower species richness at more acid sites.
2. Diversity of feeding categories increased with species richness, indicating that a greater range of food resources was available in the less acid, more species-rich communities.
3. The pattern of predation varied with pH and species richness. The numbers of large insect predators were lower in the less acid, more species-rich communities and this was correlated with the presence of fish.
4. A detailed study of the guild of detritivorous stoneflies in four streams differing in species richness provided evidence that density compensation occurs, niche width decreases and niche overlap declines as species richness increases.
5. We discuss the roles that competition and predation play in determining the structure and richness of stream invertebrate communities.  相似文献

1. We characterised the fungal communities of eight streams in Portugal, four bordered by native deciduous forest and four bordered by pure stands of Eucalyptus globulus .
2. Aquatic hyphomycete species richness and evenness, but not numbers of water-borne conidia, of aquatic hyphomycetes were significantly lower in eucalypt bordered streams.
3. Multivariate analyses subdivided the fungal communities into two distinct groups corresponding to riparian vegetation.
4. Despite these differences in the dominant decomposer community, decay rates of eucalypt leaves (accounting for ≥98% of naturally occurring leaves in eucalypt bordered streams, absent in native forest) and chestnut leaves (occurring naturally in native forests) did not differ between the two groups of streams.  相似文献

Natural hydrological disturbances in streams may reduce biomass and species richness and change community composition within streams. Disturbances can also affect beta diversity among streams if their effects are species specific or vary across sites. We investigated the effect of a natural flood on species richness, community composition and among-streams beta diversity of benthic diatoms (total community and three functional groups: low profile, high profile and motile) of seven streams in New Zealand. Sampling occurred shortly before, 10 days after and 40 days after the flood. Species richness of the total diatom community did not change after the flood. The high-profile group was the only one whose species richness declined after the flood, whereas species richness of the low-profile group increased. Community composition changed after the flood, mostly as a result of species replacement rather than richness differences over time. Finally, among-streams beta diversity did not change after the flood, suggesting that variation in species composition of benthic diatoms among streams may be maintained in the face of flood disturbances.  相似文献

1. Blackfly species richness and community structure were analysed at fifty-six sites in northern Sweden in two seasons. The sites were situated in a wide range of streams and rivers from small springbrooks, bog streams and lake-outlet streams to medium-sized forest rivers and large rivers draining montane regions.
2. Thirty-nine blackfly species were found, with between two and thirteen species per site. Neither species richness nor abundance could be related to the environmental variables measured.
3. An analysis of labral fan size of blackflies indicated a clear trend for the prevalence of larvae with small fans in large rivers and larvae with larger fan size in small streams. Similarly, fan size related to current velocities so that large fans were associated with slow current velocities and small fans with high velocities.
4. A strong relationship existed between species composition and habitat, as seen in ordination by non-metric multidimensional scaling. The relationship found between fan size and habitat size-related variables, such as channel width, depth, velocity and substratum particle size, along with longitude and altitude, in partial least squares regression analysis offered an explanation of the species composition–habitat relationship.
5. In addition to testing that distributions of blackfly larvae reflect morphological traits, we tested two general hypotheses pertaining to distribution patterns: (a) that blackfly communities show bimodal distributions; and (b) that their distributions are nested. Neither of these two hypotheses was supported by our observations. However, widespread blackfly species were locally more abundant than those found at relatively few sites, thus showing a positive abundance–occupancy relationship.  相似文献

Urbanization dramatically affects hydrology, water quality and aquatic ecosystem composition. Here we characterized changes in diatom assemblages along an urban-to-rural gradient to assess impacts of urbanization on stream conditions in Beijing, China. Diatoms, water chemistry, and physical variables were measured at 22 urban (6 in upstream and 16 in downstream) and 7 rural reference stream sites during July and August of 2013. One-way ANOVA showed that water physical and chemical variables were significantly different (p < 0.05) between urban downstream and both reference and urban upstream sites, but not between reference and urban upstream sites (p > 0.05). Similarly, structural metrics, including species richness (S), Shannon diversity (H′), species evenness (J′) and Simpson diversity (D′), were significantly different (p < 0.05) between urban downstream and both reference and urban upstream sites, but not (p > 0.05) between reference and urban upstream sites. However, diatom assemblages were very different among all sites. Achnanthidium minutissima was a consistent dominant species in reference sites; Staurosira construens var. venter and Pseudostaurosira brevistriata were the dominant species in urban upstream sites; and Nitzschia palea was the dominant species in urban downstream sites. Clustering analyses based on the relative abundance of diatom species, showed all the samples fit into three groups: reference sites, urban upstream sites, and urban downstream sites. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that concentration of K+, EC, TN, Cl and pH were positively correlated with relative abundance of dominant diatom species in urban downstream samples; WT and F were correlated with reference and urban stream diatom composition. Our results demonstrate that the composition of diatom species was more sensitive to urbanization than the water physical and chemical parameters, and that diatom assemblage structure metrics more accurately assessed water quality. Some species, such as Amphora pediculus and Cocconeis placentula were among the dominant species in low nutrients stream sites; however, they were considered to be high nutrient indicators in some streams in USA. We suggest using caution in applying indicator indices based on species composition from other regions. It is necessary to build a complete set of diatom species data and their co-ordinate environment data for specific regions.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Daily temperature data from six streams in upland Wales were used to explore the thermal effects of afforestation on stream ecology. The data were linked to published biological models to simulate fish and invertebrate development.
2. Mean daily temperatures in forest streams were lower than those of moorland streams in spring and summer, and higher in winter. These spatial comparisons were supported by the results of experimental bank-side clearance at a forest site, where there was evidence that stream temperatures fell in winter and rose in spring following treatment.
3. Simulations indicated that brown trout (Salmo trutta) could weigh over 30% more by the end of their second growing season in a moorland compared with a forest stream. Several species of insects showed slower simulated egg development at forest sites. For two ephemeropteran species simulated nymphal growth was also retarded, suggesting significant alterations to the life cycle. Two plecopteran species were affected only slightly by the different temperature regimes.
4. Overall, the simulations suggested that afforestation, by reducing summer temperatures, could lead to marked reductions in rates of development of some invertebrates and fish.  相似文献

We attempted to identify spatial patterns and determinants for benthic algal assemblages in Mid-Atlantic streams. Periphyton, water chemistry, stream physical habitat, riparian conditions, and land cover/use in watersheds were characterized at 89 randomly selected stream sites in the Mid-Atlantic region. Cluster analysis (TWINSPAN) partitioned all sites into six groups on the basis of diatom species composition. Stepwise discriminant function analysis indicated that these diatom groups can be best separated by watershed land cover/use (percentage forest cover), water temperature, and riparian conditions (riparian agricultural activities). However, the diatom-based stream classification did not correspond to Omernik's ecoregional classification. Algal biomass measured as chl a can be related to nutrients in habitats where other factors do not constrain accumulation. A regression tree model indicated that chl a concentrations in the Mid-Atlantic streams can be best predicted by conductivity, stream slope, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and riparian canopy coverage. Our data suggest that broad spatial patterns of benthic diatom assemblages can be predicted both by coarse-scale factors, such as land cover/use in watersheds, and by site-specific factors, such as riparian conditions. However, algal biomass measured as chl a was less predictable using a simple regression approach. The regression tree model was effective for showing that ecological determinants of chl a were hierarchical in the Mid-Atlantic streams.  相似文献

1. The hydrological regime is important to the distribution of benthic organisms in streams. The objective of this study was to identify relationships between hydrological variables, describing the flow regime, and macrophyte cover, species richness, diversity and community composition in Danish lowland streams.
2. We quantified macrophyte vegetation in 44 Danish streams during summer by cover, species richness and diversity. Flow regime was characterized by 18 non-intercorrelated variables describing magnitude, frequency and duration of low and high flow events, timing or predictability of flow and general flow variability.
3. We found support in the stepwise multiple regressions analysis for our expectation that macrophyte cover is lowest in streams with high flow variability and highest in streams with long duration of low flow and low flow variability. We found support for the intermediate disturbance hypothesis as there were significant quadratic relationships between species richness and diversity as functions of disturbance frequency. There was poor discrimination in a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) analysis of macrophyte community composition between four twinspan groups separating streams with different hydrological properties. Moreover, we did not find any relationship between the presence of disturbance-tolerant species and hydrological disturbance, suggesting that plant community composition developed independently of stream hydrology.  相似文献

1. Algal-community metrics were calculated for periphyton samples collected from 976 streams and rivers by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Programme during 1993–2001 to evaluate national and regional relations with water chemistry and to compare whether algal-metric values differ significantly among undeveloped and developed land-use classifications.
2. Algal metrics with significant positive correlations with nutrient concentrations included indicators of trophic condition, organic enrichment, salinity, motility and taxa richness. The relative abundance of nitrogen-fixing algae was negatively correlated with nitrogen concentrations, and the abundance of diatom species associated with high dissolved oxygen concentrations was negatively correlated with both nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Median algal-metric values and nutrient concentrations were significantly lower at undeveloped sites than those draining agricultural or urban catchments.
3. Total algal biovolume did not differ significantly among major river catchments or land-use classifications, and was only weakly correlated with nitrate (positive) and suspended-sediment (negative) concentrations. Estimates of periphyton chlorophyll a indicated an oligotrophic–mesotrophic boundary of about 21 mg m−2 and a mesotrophic–eutrophic boundary of about 55 mg m−2 based on upper and lower quartiles of the biovolume data distribution.
4. Although algal species tolerance to nutrient and organic enrichment is well documented, additional taxonomic and autecological research on sensitive, endemic algal species would further enhance water-quality assessments.  相似文献

1. We assessed the patterns of amphibian species richness and distribution in relation to water chemistry over a large geographical area in 1992–94.
2. Thirteen amphibian species were observed at 180 ponds, with mean species richness 3.5 ± 0.13 species per pond (range zero to nine). Water samples were collected from 143 ponds, analysed for fifteen chemical variables, and further analysed by multivariate statistical techniques.
3. Water in the study area was hard, alkaline and well-buffered against pH change, and most ponds were eutrophic. Amphibian species richness was negatively correlated with five chemical variables (chloride, conductivity, magnesium, total hardness, turbidity).
4. Principle components analysis reduced the data set to four chemical components that explained 65.4% of the variance in the original variables. Principle component scores were retained for use in further multivariate tests. Multiple regression accounted for only 19.0% of the variance in amphibian species richness. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was used to determine if water chemistry variables discriminated among species, but it was only able to classify 17.5% of cases correctly. DFA was also used to determine if water chemistry distinguished between used and unused sites for individual species. DFA was moderately successful, classifying 61–77% of cases correctly.
5. General water chemistry appears to play only a minor part in affecting amphibian species richness in south-western, Ontario. However, chemical variables may be helpful to distinguish between used and unused sites for some species.  相似文献

Following the European Water Framework Directive, this study aims to be the first step to (i) identify diatom type assemblages in unpolluted streams in NW Italy, and (ii) find which ecological factors explain most of the variation. To achieve this, we collected physical, chemical and benthic community data from four streams in NW Italy from 2001 to 2004, for a total of 72 samples. All sampling sites were between 200 m a.s.l. and 800 m a.s.l., but differed in the dominant lithological substrate, i.e. alluvial or siliceous. Relationships between diatom communities and environmental factors were examined using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), while Indicator Species Analysis was used to define characterizing species and accompanying species of three environmental groups identified by CCA: (1) high water quality and medium saline content, (2) high water quality and low saline content, (3) poor water quality. The diatom assemblages of the three groups of sites differed significantly, as shown by the Multi-Response Permutation Procedure. There were strong correlations between diatoms and environmental factors, especially chlorides (also highly correlated with sulphates and carbonate hardness), nitrate concentration and conductivity. The group 1 assemblage was typical of the alluvial Alpine streams with medium saline content and was characterized by mostly oligosaprobic/β-mesosaprobic taxa such as Cymbella affinis, Diatoma ehrenbergii and Staurosira pinnata. The species assemblage found in the siliceous Alpine rivers with good water quality make them suitable reference sites for a benthic diatom community.
