Recent data suggest that organic broilers often score worse on footpad lesions than conventional broilers but also that the current scoring of organic broiler feet may be misleading. In order to characterise footpad lesions in organic broilers, this study assessed and compared footpad lesions in a sample of 2987 conventional and 3578 organic broiler feet obtained from a large Danish abattoir during summer and winter. The feet were scored according to two scoring systems: the modified Danish surveillance scoring system and a histopathology-based new scoring system specifically developed to target the ability to differentiate between broiler feet with hyperkeratosis and ulcers. For both systems, all broiler feet with visible lesions were cross-sectionally incised. Significant differences between the two production systems were found for both scoring systems (χ2 = 710; P < 0.001 and χ2 = 247; P < 0.001 for the new and the surveillance systems, respectively), showing that a larger proportion of the organic feet compared to conventional feet – summer and winter – exhibited signs of hyperkeratosis. In addition, a smaller fraction of the organic feet than of the conventional feet were given the outermost scores, that is, normal or ulcerated; 13.4% v. 25.3% broiler feet were given score 0 for organic v. conventional production systems, respectively (χ2 = 152; P < 0.001), and 18.4% v. 23.8% feet were given score 4 for organic v. conventional production systems, respectively (χ2 = 308; P < 0.001). Thus, the results suggest that surveillance scoring systems such as the one used in Denmark are useful for the examination of footpad lesions in broilers from both types of production systems. However, the results have also raised attention to a typical characteristic of the feet of organic broilers, that is, profound hyperkeratosis, which may underlie potential misclassifications in surveillance scoring systems like the one used in Denmark. Among the possible solutions to this challenge to the correctness and fairness of the scoring system are improved procedures (such as mandatory incision), training of technicians and calibration of results (especially for the organic footpads).  相似文献

Echinoderms represent a phylum with exceptional regenerative capabilities that can reconstruct both external appendages and internal organs. Mechanistic understanding of the cellular pathways involved in regeneration in these animals has been hampered by the limited genomic tools and limited ability to manipulate regenerative processes. We present a functional assay to investigate mechanisms of tissue regeneration and biomineralization by measuring the regrowth of amputated tube feet (sensory and motor appendages) and spines in the sea urchin, Lytechinus variegatus. The ability to manipulate regeneration was demonstrated by concentration-dependent inhibition of regrowth of spines and tube feet by treatment with the mitotic inhibitor, vincristine. Treatment with the gamma-secretase inhibitor DAPT resulted in a concentration-dependent inhibition of regrowth, indicating that both tube feet and spine regeneration require functional Notch signaling. Stem cell markers (Piwi and Vasa) were expressed in tube feet and spine tissue, and Vasa-positive cells were localized throughout the epidermis of tube feet by immunohistochemistry, suggesting the existence of multipotent progenitor cells in these highly regenerative appendages. The presence of Vasa protein in other somatic tissues (e.g. esophagus, radial nerve, and a sub-population of coelomocytes) suggests that multipotent cells are present throughout adult sea urchins and may contribute to normal homeostasis in addition to regeneration. Mechanistic insight into the cellular pathways governing the tremendous regenerative capacity of echinoderms may reveal processes that can be modulated for regenerative therapies, shed light on the evolution of regeneration, and enable the ability to predict how these processes will respond to changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Understanding animal behavior as a product of natural selection sometimes result in an underestimation of the animal's adaptability: lower animals with poor mental capabilities are usually considered to simply exhibit innate behavioral patterns. Self-organized behavior may exhibit both stability of certain behavioral patterns and flexibility in adopting those patterns. Thus, the self-organization processes of starfish arm and tube feet movements are investigated, by observing obstacle avoidance behavior and tube feet of moving starfish. As starfish have no central nervous systems, their behaviors are the result of certain self-organization processes. Starfish have hierarchically constructed motor organs consisting of arms and tube feet. The collective behavior of the tube feet does not function only as simple fluctuations in the arms' coordination. As a result, starfish seem to exhibit more versatile behavioral changes than expected from the original model of a self-organized behavior.  相似文献

The structure of feet is widely used as a diagnostic feature in mammalian taxonomy. The relationship between the lengths of the metacarpals and foot pads are described with regard to plantigrade and digitigrade feet in the Viverridae. Although species in the Herpestinae, Paradoxurinae and Galidiinae vary considerably in size (from 450 g to 10 kg), the increase in length of the metapodial is isometric. Feet in which the metacarpals are less than 15 % of total limb length are plantigrade (Paradoxurinae and Cryptoproctinae) while those larger than 15% are digitigrade (Herpestinae and Galidiinae). The Viverrinae are composed of two natural groups, one in which the species have plantigrade forefeet and digitigrade hind feet and one in which both fore- and hind feet are digitigrade. The Hemigalinae does not appear to be a natural grouping, because the banded palm civet has plantigrade fore- and hind feet while other members of the subfamily have digitigrade feet; it may be better to reclassify the subfamily into three (Hemigalinae, Fossinae and Euplerinae).  相似文献

Incubation in most avian species involves transferring heat from parent to egg through a highly vascularized brood patch. Some birds, however, do not develop a brood patch. Unusual among birds, these species hold their eggs under the webs of their feet, but the role of the feet in heat transfer is uncertain. Often the webs are positioned between the feathered abdomen and the egg during incubation, suggesting that either the abdomen, the feet, or both could transfer heat to the egg. We studied heat transfer from foot webs to eggs during incubation in Nazca boobies by spatially separating the feet from the abdomen using an oversized egg. We found that feet transfer heat to eggs independently of any heat that may be transferred from the abdomen. In addition, we found that incubating boobies had significantly greater vascularization in their foot webs, measured as a percentage of web area covered by vessels, than nonincubating boobies. We also found that males, whether incubating or nonincubating, had significantly less web vascularization than females. We concluded that vascularized Nazca booby feet function in the same way during incubation that vascularized brood patches do, acting as surrogate brood patches.  相似文献

Older adults are more variable than young adults on tasks that demand the simultaneous control of more than one effector, and the difference between age groups may be related to their different capacity of coordinating the force output of the involved effectors. The goal of this study was to determine whether age-associated differences in motor output variability during tasks involving the simultaneous dorsiflexion of two feet can be partially explained by differences in coordination and possibly attenuated by physical training. Ten young and 22 old adults (10 trained and 12 untrained old adults) volunteered to participate in the study. Trained older adults had experience in a high-intensity mixed modality training (MMT) regime for a minimum of 1?year. Volunteers performed successive trials of a constant force task and a goal-directed task, with and without visual feedback. Within- and between-trial variability were calculated and coordination was quantified using the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach (i.e., co-variation of the force outputs of both feet were used to quantify a motor synergy index). NGIWYamide, a neuropeptide recently isolated from sea cucumbers, was tested on tube feet of the starfish Asterina pectinifera. NGIWYamide (10(-6)-10(-4) M) caused contraction of isolated tube feet. NGIWYamide-like immunoreactivity (NGIWYa-LI) was investigated with an antiserum against NGIWYamide. NGIWYa-LI was found in the radial nerve cord (RNC), the marginal nerve, and the tube feet. Both ectoneural and hyponeural parts of the RNC showed NGIWYa-LI. Immunoreactive cell bodies were found in both parts of RNC. Extensive labeling in the basal region of the ectoneural part suggests that a substantial proportion of axons in this part contains NGIWYamide or a similar substance. In tube feet, NGIWYa-LI was found in the sub-epithelial nerve plexus and in the basal nerve ring. Double labeling along with 1E11, a neuron-specific monoclonal antibody developed from A. pectinifera, indicated that the structures with NGIWYa-LI are neurons. These results suggest that NGIWYamide or an NGIWYamide-like peptide exists in starfish and functions as a neurotransmitter or a neuromodulator.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The definitive diagnosis of gout is best established by demonstration of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the synovial fluid or biopsy. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of tophi can play a crucial role in diagnosis. CASES: A 36-year-old chronic alcoholic male developed subcutaneous nodules on both malleoli without a history of arthropathy and with normal serum uric acid levels. FNAC of the nodules demonstrated stacks and sheaves of needle-shaped crystals of MSU. A 50-year-old diabetic male developed multiple nodules on the feet. He gave a past history of painful athropathy. A roentgenogram of the feet was suspicious for gout; however, joint aspiration failed, and the serum uric acid levels were normal. At this juncture FNAC of the feet tophi clinched the diagnosis of gout. In both cases, polarization of needle washings (wet mount) and the fixed, Papanicolaoustained smears showed negatively birefringent, needle-shaped crystals of MSU, thus confirming the diagnosis of gout. CONCLUSION: FNAC of gouty tophi is an easy alternative to synovial biopsy and joint fluid analysis. It is simpler, easier and less painful. As crystals are preserved in stained smears, they can be employed for polarization and confirmation of gout.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Changes in the distal phalanges of the fingers, including coned epiphyses and hypoplasia of the phalanges, are recognized teratogenic effects of the anticonvulsant drugs phenytoin and phenobarbital. We hypothesized that the frequency of these changes would also be increased in the toes of children exposed to these drugs in comparison to unexposed children. METHODS: We report on the findings in an analysis of radiographs of the feet of 63 children exposed in utero to either phenytoin alone, phenobarbital alone or both drugs and 56 unexposed comparison children. RESULTS: Only subtle changes were identified. The frequency of coned epiphyses and hypoplasia of phalanges of the toes was the same in both the anticonvulsant and unexposed children. Among the anticonvulsant-exposed children, however, there was a strong association between the presence of coned epiphyses in the feet and in the hands: all five children with coned epiphyses in the hands, as described previously in the same individuals by Lu et al. ([2000] Teratology 61:277-283) had coned epiphyses in their feet (P = 0.0012). Measurements showed a shortening of metatarsals in all three treatment groups, but this was significant only in the phenytoin monotherapy-exposed children. CONCLUSIONS: Subtle changes are present in the phalanges and metatarsals of the feet of anticonvulsant-exposed children, but the overall frequency is much less than occurred in the hands of the same children. We conclude that the presence of either coned epiphyses or hypoplasia of the phalanges of the toes cannot be considered a distinctive feature of the teratogenicity of the anticonvulsant drugs phenytoin and phenobarbital.  相似文献

目的:总结类风湿关节炎(RA)患者拇长屈肌腱(FHL)病变的超声特点及二者间的相关性。方法:回顾性分析2010年2月至2011年6月因足部疼痛于我院就诊的60例(120足)RA患者资料。应用彩色多普勒超声诊断仪探查拇长屈肌腱,根据超声探查拇长屈肌腱病变情况的结果将患者分为3组:肌腱完整组(A组,45足),肌腱周围炎症组(B组,49足),肌腱断裂组(C组,26足)。对拇长屈肌腱病变的特点及部位进行描述,并将拇长屈肌腱病变严重程度与患者年龄及病程进行相关性分析。结果:45足肌腱完整,49足出现不同部位的肌腱周围炎症(内踝转折处17足,henrry’s结节处11足,第一跖趾关节跖侧21足),26足发生肌腱断裂(9足发生于内踝转折处,17足发生于跖趾关节跖侧)。肌腱病变的发生率71%。A组平均年龄49.9±9.2岁,病程4.7±2.6年;B组平均年龄56.2±9.2岁,病程16.2±7.4年;C组平均年龄54.7±8.0岁,病程20.9±4.4年。三组间上述参数差异具有统计学意义(P0.05)。结论:拇长屈肌腱是类风湿关节炎足部结构的常见受累部位,其病变多发生于内踝转折处,henrry's结节处及第一跖趾关节跖侧,但henrry’s结节处的断裂少见。在对类风湿关节炎平足患者进行肌腱转位手术时,应充分考量拇长屈肌腱的病变。  相似文献

This report presents the results of a study conducted between 1985 and 1994 on onychomycosis observed in the city of Rome. Six thousand six hundred and eighty eight patients were examined during this period. Among them 1,762 (26.3%) were affected by fungal nail infections. Because the etiologic agents could not be isolated in 105 cases (6%), the results refer to 1,657 subjects (24.8% of the total), presenting with positive microscopic and cultural examinations. Thirty eight patients (2.3%) had onychomycosis of both their hands and feet.From an etiological point of view, 59.1% of the nail infections were caused by yeasts, 23.2% were infected with dermatophytes and 17.6% by non-dermatophytic fungi. The etiology of onychomycosis of the hands differed from that of the feet. Yeasts were primarily responsible for onychomycosis of the hands (86.2%), while dermatophytes caused tinea unguium peduum (48%). Fungal fingernail infections by Candida spp. were the most common (50.3%), followed by those of the feet by dermatophytes (20%). Candida albicans was responsible for 70.6% of the hand infections but for only 15.9% of those of the feet. Trichophyton rubrum and T mentagrophytes were the most common dermatophytes, mainly causing toenail infections (23.4% and 21%, respectively), while Aspergillus spp., Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Acremonium spp. and Aspergillus niger were the most common non-dermatophytes observed.With regard to sex, the fungal nail infections were more widespread in women (72.1%) and in subjects of both sexes over the age of 50.  相似文献

Insect epidermal cell surfaces can be seen by scanning electron microscopy after removal of the basal lamina. This let us study surface changes in the 5th larval stage of Calpodes ethlius (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae) in preparation for metamorphosis at the end of the stadium, in particular changes in the basal cell processes or feet, intercellular lymph spaces, filopodia and hemidesmosomes. The feet develop in three phases, initiation, elongation and contraction. Initial growth begins immediately after ecdysis and continues until commitment to pupation 66 hr later. During this phase the feet are randomly oriented. Elongation and orientation begin after commitment to pupation. Orientation is probably achieved by selective survival and growth of those feet that are axially oriented rather than by reorientation. As the larva shortens to the pupal form late in the stadium, contraction of the feet occurs and the cells become columnar. The feet finally disappear as the cells rearrange themselves into new positions in the pupal epidermis. The lateral margins of the feet are united by adhesions even when their interdigitations are most complex. The adhesions separate an intercellular lymph space from the haemolymph. The lymph space remains small through most of the stadium, but enlarges with the loss of lateral junctions as the feet contract and eventually extends along most of the length of the columnar cells. Filopodia then form and span the gaps between the cells as though they have been induced by the separation and loss of lateral cell to cell contact. Scanning electron microscopy also shows that hemidesmosomes reflect the axial alignment of the cells even before the orientation of the feet. The hemidesmosome plaques are linear structures having a constant width of 0.15 - 0.2 mum and variable length. They arise in short sections and lengthen by the linear addition of more sections with the same width. Late in the stadium they lose their axial alignment and may become branched.  相似文献

Peripheral couplings are junctions between the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and the surface membrane (SM). Feet occupy the SR/SM junctional gap and are identified as the SR calcium release channels, or ryanodine receptors (RyRs). In cardiac muscle, the activation of RyRs during excitation-contraction (e-c) coupling is initiated by surface membrane depolarization, followed by the opening of surface membrane calcium channels, the dihydropyridine receptors (DHPRs). We have studied the disposition of DHPRs and RyRs, and the structure of peripheral couplings in chick myocardium, a muscle that has no transverse tubules. Immunolabeling shows colocalization of RyRs and DHPRs in clusters at the fiber's periphery. The positions of DHPR and RyR clusters change coincidentally during development. Freeze-fracture of the surface membrane reveals the presence of domains (junctional domains) occupied by clusters of large particles. Junctional domains in the surface membrane and arrays of feet in the junctional gap have similar sizes and corresponding positions during development, suggesting that both are components of peripheral couplings. As opposed to skeletal muscle, membrane particles in junctional domains of cardiac muscle do not form tetrads. Thus, despite their proximity to the feet, they do not appear to be specifically associated with them. Two observations establish the identify of the structurally identified feet arrays/junctional domain complexes with the immunocytochemically defined RyRs/DHPRs coclusters: the concomitant changes during development and the identification of feet as the cytoplasmic domains of RyRs. We suggest that the large particles in junctional domains of the surface membrane represent DHPRs. These observations have two important functional consequences. First, the apposition of DHPRs and RyRs indicates that most of the inward calcium current flows into the restricted space where feet are located. Secondly, contrary to skeletal muscle, presumptive DHPRs do not show a specific association with the feet, which is consistent with a less direct role of charge movement in cardiac than in skeletal e-c coupling.  相似文献

We developed a new technique for culture study that successfully recovers fungi from drug-treated skin tissues, in which tissue specimens were homogenized, dialyzed against water, digested with trypsin, and then washed with PBS, to eliminate the drug that remaining in the skin tissue specimens. With this modified culture method, we reevaluated the efficacy of KP-103, neticonazole, and lanoconazole in a guinea pig interdigital tinea pedis model. Guinea pigs with tinea pedis were topically treated with a 1% solution of KP-103 or a reference drug once a day for 10 consecutive days. Five days after the last treatment, left and right feet were subjected to culture study by the conventional and modified recovery culture methods, respectively. One hundred percent (20/20) of lanoconazole-treated feet were judged as culture-negative by the conventional culture method, but 85% (17/20) of the feet were shown to be culture-positive when the modified recovery culture method was used. On the other hand, KP-103 achieved high rates of culture-negative rates, 95% (19/20) and 85% (17/20), in both conventional and modified culture methods, respectively. Furthermore, on day-30 posttreatment, KP-103 sterilized 14 of the 20 infected feet, whereas neticonazole and lanoconazole were not effective even in reducing fungal burden. KP-103 proved to be highly effective in achieving mycological cure and preventing relapse against tinea pedis presumably because of its good bioavailability in the skin based on its low keratin-affinity, along with its potent antifungal activity.  相似文献

1. Recordings of longitudinal displacements of both feet have been performed by linking each foot to a length-voltage transducer by means of threads. The movement transmitted to the transducer was reduced by winding the thread around a sixteen strand pulley block. 2. The aspect of the displacement curves allows a direct analysis of the walk. Some typical curves of normal and pathological gaits are presented. Graphic measurements done on several right and left cycles of a 6 m walk episode in 50 adult subjects provided data to determine the mean and the standard deviation of spatial and temporal parameters of the walk. 3. An advantage of this method is to permit the measurement of the parameters of several successive cycles of both sides and so to detect changes in the length, the duration and the velocity of successive cycles of the same foot and of alternated cycles of both feet. Vocalizations have been elucidated in previous songbird studies, whereas less attention has been paid to non-vocal sounds. In the blue-capped cordon-bleu (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus), both sexes perform courtship displays that are accompanied by singing and distinct body movements (i.e. dance). Our previous study revealed that their courtship bobbing includes multiple rapid steps. This behaviour is quite similar to human tap dancing, because it can function as both visual and acoustic signals. To examine the acoustic signal value of such steps, we tested if their high-speed step movements produce non-vocal sounds that have amplitudes similar to vocal sounds. We found that step behaviour affected step sound amplitude. Additionally, the dancing step sounds were substantially louder than feet movement sounds in a non-courtship context, and the amplitude range overlapped with that of song notes. These results support the idea that in addition to song cordon-bleus produce acoustic signals with their feet.  相似文献

This paper reports on a methodology developed for studying the effects of various types of prosthetic feet on the gait of trans-femoral amputees. It is shown that an analysis in three planes of motion of not only the prosthetic, but also the sound limb provides important information on the performance of prosthetic feet. Two male trans-femoral amputees were tested with four different prosthetic feet; the Springlite II, Carbon Copy III, Seattle LightFoot and the Multiflex foot. A detailed analysis of the results of one amputee and a summary of the most important results of a second subject is presented. The tests were carried out at normal (1.16 m s(-1)) and fast (1.56 m s(-1)) walking speeds. Three dimensional gait analysis was carried out to derive the time curves of the joint angles, intersegmental moments and power at the ankle, knee and hip joints at both the prosthetic and sound sides. A higher first peak of the ground reaction force at the sound side with the Seattle LightFoot compared to that with the Springlite II, may be the result of the lower late stance dorsiflexion angle with the former. Compared to the other two feet, the Carbon Copy III and the Springlite II showed higher prosthetic dorsiflexing moments and positive power at late stance, which could assist in the push-off. The 3D intersegmental loads at the ankle and knee can be used as a guide for design and for compilation of standards for testing of lower limb prostheses incorporating flexible feet.  相似文献

The custom of bound feet among Chinese women has existed for almost a century. This practice has influenced the daily life of Chinese women, especially during everyday locomotion. The primary aim of this study is to analyze the loading patterns of bound feet. Specifically, the plantar pressure and center of pressure were analyzed for peak pressure, contact area, force time integral, center of pressure displacement velocity and trajectory in the anterior-posterior direction via a comparison with normal feet. The key outcomes from this work were that the forefoot and rearfoot of bound feet bear the whole loading during stance phase. The center of pressure displacement velocity of bound feet was also greatly reduced with the shortening of trajectories. This suggests that the proprioceptive system adjusts motor function to adapt to new loading patterns while maintaining locomotive stability. A biomechanical understanding of bound feet may assist with prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of bound feet disorders.  相似文献
