Population dynamics, demography and body size of the cladoceranBosmina longirostris were examined in an experimental study in which the abundance of its predator (the cyprind fishPhoxinus eos) was varied in an unproductive lake. Four densities of fish were used, encompassing the biomass of fish in the lake.Bosmina was most abundant at low and medium fish densities (1.06 and 2.12 g fish biomass · m-3) and less abundant when fish were either absent or present at high density (3.71 g fish biomass · m-3). The unimodal response to predator abundance resulted from effects on both birth and death rates.Bosmina birth rates increased as fish biomass increased, in response to increasing food (phytoplankton) biomass. Death rates were highest at high fish biomass (because of fish predation) and in the absence of fish (because of predation by the dipteranChaoborus, which was most abundant in the absence of fish). Size-frequency distributions revealed that fish eliminated the larger size classes ofBosmina, and mean carapace length ofBosmina populations was inversely proportional to fish biomass.Bosmina initiated reproduction at smaller size in the presence of fish than in their absence, and size at maturity was inversely proportional to fish biomass. Size at birth also tended to decrease with increasing fish biomass, but this trend was not as strong as that of size at maturity. Decreased size at maturity apparently allowedBosmina individuals to reproduce before becoming vulnerable to fish predation. Flexibility in size at maturity, together with low abundance of invertebrate predators and large herbivores (which were preyed upon by fish), allowedBosmina to become abundant in low and medium fish treatments. In the high fish treatment, mortality due to fish predation was too severe to be offset by decreased size at maturity, andBosmina population density was low. The net response ofBosmina populations to fish predation results from interactive effects of predation on mortality, natality, and life history traits.  相似文献

The growth rates of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri , which ranged in size from 0.6 to 5.2 g and were provided rations of three different sizes, were measured during a 15-day study. The relative maintenance rations (food/gram of fish at zero growth rate) decreased with increases of fish size. Consequently when fish were kept at low ration levels the growth rates and gross efficiencies of food conversion of 'large' fish were greater than those of 'small' fish. However, as ration level increased, the effects of fish size grew at the same rates or slower than small fish. With increases of ration to the highest levels (9–12%/day) gross efficiency values for large fish began to decline while those for small fish continued to increase.  相似文献

The movements of adult Atlantic salmon were recorded as they approached, entered and ascended the pool-and-orifice fish ladder at Pitlochry Dam, Scotland. Thirty-nine returning salmon were captured in the River Tummel by rod-and-line angling, radio-tagged and released near where they were caught. The subsequent movements of each fish were then monitored. An electronic fish counter collected additional data on movements of untagged fish past a fixed point in the ladder. Of the 39 fish that were radio-tagged, 29 individuals were recorded approaching and ascended the ladder. The remaining fish either did not approach the dam (three fish), approached the dam after detailed tracking had ended (two fish), were recaptured by anglers (three fish), or the radio tags failed (two fish). Salmon released earlier in the year delayed longer before first approaching the dam. Delays between first approaching the dam and ascent of the ladder were greater for fish that approached the dam earlier. The majority of salmon visited the ladder entrance more than once (maximum 10 visits) before ascending. Having entered, all but four salmon ascended the fish ladder successfully on their first attempt. The four individuals that failed to do so succeeded on their second attempt. The rate at which salmon ascended the ladder was related directly to temperature. The shortest ascent time of a radio-tagged salmon was 5·25 h. Movements of eight of 11 tagged fish through the ladder ceased with the onset of darkness but continued on the following morning. No radio-tagged fish entered the ladder at temperatures below 9) C. Similarly, few untagged fish were recorded ascending the ladder by the electronic fish counter at water temperatures below 8·5) C. Records from the fish counter indicated that 92% of upstream movements were made during daylight.  相似文献

Typical primary antibody responses were found after injecting carp maintained at 25°C with formalin-killed (Fk) Vibrio anguillarum bacteria, but not in fish injected with the same antigen held at 12° C. There were no significant increases over the primary responses in fish receiving a second injection 60 days after the first injection.
The differences in the results between fish groups receiving three V. anguillarum antigens at two dosages were found to be insignificant in most of the experiments. A comparison of the antibody titres of fish groups after challenge with Fk bacteria showed no difference from control fish receiving a single injection similar to the challenge dose or fish receiving a previous injection with the antigens emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) at 25° C. However, significant immunosuppression was found in fish that were given the primary injection intracardially at 25° C or 12° C, or with CFA emulsion at 12° C.  相似文献

为了探讨饲料氧化鱼油对草鱼(Ctenopharyngodon idellus)肠道组织结构及其通透性的影响, 本实验以豆油、鱼油及氧化鱼油作为饲料脂肪源, 分别设计鱼油组(6F)、豆油组(6S)、2%氧化鱼油(4S2OF)、4%氧化鱼油(2S4OF)及6%氧化鱼油(6OF) 5组等氮、等能的半纯化饲料。经72d池塘网箱养殖后, 实验结果显示: (1)氧化鱼油显著增加(P0.05)草鱼血清和肠道MDA含量、增加肠道GSH含量(P0.05), 但随氧化产物含量上升GSH含量出现下降。(2)氧化鱼油会显著降低肠道内胆汁酸的含量(P0.05)。(3)氧化鱼油会显著增加肠道绒毛中杯状细胞的数量(P0.05), 且随着氧化产物的增加, 肠道微绒毛高度呈现先上升后下降趋势。(4)氧化鱼油会导致肠道紧密连接间隙增大, 增加肠道通透性, 使血清中D-乳酸及内毒素含量显著增加(P0.05)。结果表明, 饲料中鱼油氧化产物损伤了草鱼肠道组织结构, 尤其是肠道上皮细胞紧密连接结构损伤严重, 从而破坏了肠道黏膜的机械屏障功能, 使肠道通透性显著增加, 肠道细菌内毒素等发生转移。鱼油氧化产物会引起草鱼肠道氧化与抗氧化应激反应, 干扰草鱼肝-肠正常胆汁酸循环, 致使草鱼肠道胆汁酸不足。  相似文献

1. Diel vertical migrations (DVM) are frequently observed in pelagic fish and zooplankton populations. In addition to predator avoidance and foraging opportunity, bioenergetics optimisation has been hypothesised to cause the selective advantage of migrating fish. However, experimental confirmation of growth advantages of fish held at naturally observed cyclic temperatures, and food densities are surprisingly rare. 2. We compared growth rates, growth efficiencies and energy budgets of vendace (Coregonus albula, Salmoniformes) fed daily rations of 10% body mass and held at low (4.5 °C), high (8 °C) and cyclic (switch between 4.5 and 8 °C) temperatures over a period of 6 weeks. Biochemical body composition was evaluated by bioimpedance analyses and direct determination of water, lipid and protein content in a subset of fish. 3. Growth rate and food conversion efficiency were similar in fish held at high and cyclic temperatures, but higher than those found at low temperatures. Body condition of fish at cyclic temperatures was maximised, but these fish also had the highest water content. The proportion of lipids and proteins was slightly depleted in fish held at cyclic and low temperatures relative to the high temperature treatment. Accordingly, growth and biochemical composition of fish responded specifically to cyclic temperatures and were not simply intermediate between those found at low and high temperatures. 4. We could not confirm a bioenergetics advantage of fish switching between high and low temperatures. However, there were no substantial extra metabolic costs through exposure to cyclic temperatures, and hence, fish performing DVM may benefit from predation avoidance without compromising their metabolic balance and hence growth rates. These results suggest that the evolution of DVM is a multi‐faceted process with no single ultimate explanation.  相似文献

We performed in vivo studies to examine the idea that cardiac work is impaired in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) below a certain venous PO2 threshold. We hypothesized that coronary-ligated fish, swimming continuously at a reasonably high water velocity (1.5 body lengths x s(-1)) and exposed to progressive hypoxia, would fatigue at higher venous PO2 and ambient water PO2 compared with sham-operated fish. However, we found that both the lowest venous PO2 that supported hypoxic swimming (9.9 torr for coronary-ligated fish and 11.1 torr for sham-operated fish) and the venous PO2 at fatigue (7.8 torr and 8.6 torr, respectively) were the same for coronary-ligated and sham-operated fish. Also, both groups quit swimming at the same water PO2 heart rate and hematocrit. Nevertheless, significant differences in cardiac performance did exist between the two groups. Whereas ventral aortic blood pressure (Pva) increased significantly with hypoxic swimming in sham-operated fish, there was no such increase in coronary-ligated fish. In addition, cardiac arrhythmias occurred in coronary-ligated fish at fatigue, and these fish were slower to recover from exhaustion. We believe that the venous PO2 threshold to support cardiac performance in the absence of a coronary supply was between 7.8 and 9.9 torr. Furthermore, we suspect that the low PO2 in coronary-ligated fish effectively lowered their myocardial O2 demand. Uncertainty still exists regarding whether or not the venous PO2 threshold lies between 8.6 and 11.1 torr in sham-operated fish.  相似文献

The influence of fish kairomones on the life history parameters of a clone of the hybrid Daphnia galeata × hyalina was measured in laboratory experiments with small and large neonates at one food concentration. The influence of fish kairomones on neonates of the same size at two food concentrations was also investigated.
2. Neonate size (maternal investment per egg) changed the influence of fish kairomones on life history parameters. Daphnids that were small at birth showed greater differences between fish (kairomones present) and no-fish (kairomones absent) treatments for age at maturity and number of eggs in the first clutch than animals that were large at birth. On the other hand, animals that were large at birth differed more in size at maturity between fish and no-fish treatments than small neonates.
3. The food concentrations used in the experiments (0.25–0.75 mg C l–1) hardly affected the influence of fish kairomones on the life history characteristics studied.
4. The effect of fish kairomones on the size of neonates from the first clutch was similar for large and small daphnids. In the no-fish treatment significant differences were found between small and large neonates for age at maturity and number of eggs in the first clutch. In the fish treatment size at maturity differed significantly between small and large neonates.
5. In life history experiments, neonate size has to be taken into account when measuring the effects of fish kairomones because size at birth influences the results.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Coral reefs are areas of maximum biodiversity, but the parasites of coral reef fishes, and especially their species richness, are not well known. Over an 8-year period, parasites were collected from 24 species of Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae and Caesionidae off New Caledonia, South Pacific. RESULTS: Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, with a total of 207 host-parasite combinations and 58 parasite species identified at the species level, with 27 new host records. Results are presented for isopods, copepods, monogeneans, digeneans, cestodes and nematodes. When results are restricted to well-sampled reef fish species (sample size[THIN SPACE]>[THIN SPACE]30), the number of host-parasite combinations is 20[EN DASH]25 per fish species, and the number of parasites identified at the species level is 9[EN DASH]13 per fish species. Lutjanids include reef-associated fish and deeper sea fish from the outer slopes of the coral reef: fish from both milieus were compared. Surprisingly, parasite biodiversity was higher in deeper sea fish than in reef fish (host-parasite combinations: 12.50 vs 10.13, number of species per fish 3.75 vs 3.00); however, we identified four biases which diminish the validity of this comparison. Finally, these results and previously published results allow us to propose a generalization of parasite biodiversity for four major families of reef-associated fishes (Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae, Serranidae and Lethrinidae): well-sampled fish have a mean of 20 host-parasite combinations per fish species, and the number of parasites identified at the species level is 10 per fish species. CONCLUSIONS: Since all precautions have been taken to minimize taxon numbers, it is safe to affirm than the number of fish parasites is at least ten times the number of fish species in coral reefs, for species of similar size or larger than the species in the four families studied; this is a major improvement to our estimate of biodiversity in coral reefs. Our results suggest that extinction of a coral reef fish species would eventually result in the coextinction of at least ten species of parasites.  相似文献

1. Subtropical reservoirs of Australia are commonly subject to summer blooms of cyanobacteria. The potential for food web manipulation to control cyanobacterial blooms was investigated in Lake Maroon, south east Queensland using enclosures in which the density of the Australian gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. was manipulated. 2. Zooplankton biomass and community structure were strongly affected by fish density. A size dependent predation effect of Hypseleotris on zooplankton was observed at ambient fish densities, and the community shifted towards a dominance of copepod juveniles and nauplii. Substantial increases in the populations of Ceriodaphnia and calanoid copepods were observed at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. 3. At ambient fish densities total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria were maintained at levels similar to those prevailing at day 0. Total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria decreased substantially at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. Chlorophytes became dominant in the ‘no fish’ treatment and the grazing‐resistant species Oocystis and Dictyosphaerium were significantly higher than at ambient fish densities. 4. The experiment demonstrated a strong positive relationship between Hypseleotris density and cyanobacteria, and the results suggest that subtropical reservoirs may be suited to food web manipulation as a means of controlling summer cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

Summary

An unusually cold spell during the winter of 1987 caused a drop in water temperature at Lake St Lucia. This coupled with typical estuarine salinities in the lake resulted in a fish kill. The kill was one of the largest recorded in a South African estuarine environment and involved an estimated 250,000 fish comprising at least 21 species. Most fish that died belonged to small species. Densities of dead fish recorded along the lake's shoreline ranged from 0.1 to 16.6 fish per metre. It is concluded that the combination of low water temperature and near marine salinities was the major cause of the 1987 fish kill at Lake St Lucia.  相似文献

Proposed fish toxicity thresholds for interpreting the biological significance of selenium concentrations measured in environmental media include 2 to 5?µg/L in water, 4?mg/kg dw in fish whole body tissue, 10?mg/kg dw in fish ovaries, and 3?mg/kg dw in fish diets. Use of these thresholds would likely identify fish populations as being at risk at numerous sites across the U.S. However, selenium effects on fish populations in the field have only been conclusively demonstrated at a few locations. Based on our critical review, these threshold values are not consistent with USEPA methodology for deriving criteria, in many cases are not supported by the scientific literature, and, as a result, are generally overly conservative. Based on currently available information, we believe the scientific literature is not supportive of generic sediment or water thresholds, but is supportive of alternative separate whole body thresholds of 9?mg/kg dw for warmwater fish and 6?mg/kg dw for larval coldwater anadromous fish, an ovary threshold of 17?mg/kg dw for warmwater fish, and fish dietary thresholds of 10 and 11?mg/kg dw for warmwater fish and larval coldwater anadromous fish, respectively.  相似文献

In order to test the hypothesis that fish distribution is related to water depth, three exploited reservoirs were sampled at day and at night using a Simrad EK60 echosounder. Acoustic surveys were carried out between February and June 2008, which focused on the fish size, species density (fish per ha) and biomass (kg ha?1) along vertical and longitudinal gradients. It was evident in the surface layer (0–3 m) during daytime that the larger fish sizes occupy waters near the dam or the middle of Lakhmess and Sejnane reservoirs. In the upper layer at nighttime, a gradient of fish size is shown proportional to the depth at Lakhmess Reservoir and inversely proportional at the man‐made Sejnane Lake. At Lakhmess and Laabid reservoirs, fish density was significantly higher in deep water (3926 ± 1409 and 624 ± 258 fish per ha) rather than in the upper layer (988 ± 2 and 8 ± 2 fish per ha in daytime, respectively), while at Sejnane Reservoir the number of fish per area was similar along the vertical gradient. The biomass was significantly higher in waters deeper than 3 m at Sejnane Reservoir whereas at Lakhmess it was higher in the surface layer. Fish biomass increased from upstream (0.16 ± 0.05 kg ha?1) to middle (3.07 ± 2.96 kg ha?1) and downstream (3.82 ± 2.30 kg ha?1 at night) areas in the man‐made Laabid Lake while a similar longitudinal gradient occurred in the deepest Sejnane Reservoir. The vertical gradient in fish distribution is discussed. From the dam to the tributary of the entire water column, it was concluded that fish biomass distribution was governed by depth and was most abundant in areas with deep waters.  相似文献

Efficacy of in-feed treatment with emamectin benzoate (Slice) for the control of ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni on rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was tested under laboratory and field conditions. In both experiments fish were fed with fish feed to deliver a therapeutic dose of 0 (control) or 50 microg emamectin benzoate kg(-1) d(-1) (treatment) for a period of 7 d. After 3 d of challenge with A. coregoni in the laboratory, the infestation level in treated fish was lower than that observed in the controls (p < 0.001). Efficacy of 100% against newly hatched A. coregoni metanauplii and adults and 80% against juveniles was observed. In the field, trial medication was undertaken at 2 sections on a flow-through canal with 1 wk between treatments. Mean infestations of 100 to 200 A. coregoni per fish with 100% prevalence was recorded prior to medication. Following the treatment, the mean infestation of A. coregoni on fish declined to 31 lice per fish at Section A and 2.5 lice per fish at Section B. Then, after 28 d of treatment, the number of lice per fish was < 1 at Section A; in contrast the mean number of A. coregoni per fish at the control section was > 20. The prevalence of A. coregoni remained < 50% over a period of 72 d of treatment, but started to increase again thereafter. This suggests that emamectin benzoate concentration in fish remained at a level high enough to kill A. coregoni over a period of 9 wk. Emamectin benzoate was very effective in the control of A. coregoni infesting trout.  相似文献

Oxidative stress in fish (Sparus aurata) as a consequence of food restriction and fasting, has been studied. Four groups of fish were maintained for 46 days under different conditions of food supplementation: a control group with no food restriction (ratio of food/fish of 2% w/w), two groups of animals with restricted food supplement (1 and 0.5%) and a fasting group (no meal addition). Finally, all the fish were provided with food at the same ratio as the control group for the last 7 days. Sampling and weighing of fish were carried out every week and their livers were used for the analysis of known biomarkers of oxidative stress. Malondialdehyde and oxidized glutathione levels increased at the third week in fish with partial or total food deprivation, but these levels returned to normal values when the fish readapted to the control conditions. Antioxidant enzymes were also analyzed and significant increases in superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities were found in parallel with food restriction; however catalase activity decreased in fasting fish. New SOD isoforms were detected by isoelectrofocusing in fish under food restriction at the second week, which disappeared when starved fish returned to the control conditions. These new SOD isoforms were detected before the appearance of other usual oxidative stress biomarkers.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted at commercial salmon farms to evaluate the efficacy of emamectin benzoate (Slice, 0.2% aquaculture pre-mix, Schering-Plough Animal Health) as a treatment for sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Kr?yer) and Caligus elongatus Nordmann infestations in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. Trials were carried out in 15 m2 commercial sea pens, at temperatures of 5.5 to 7.5 degrees C and 10.8 to 13.8 degrees C. Each pen was stocked with 14,000 to 17,500 fish with mean weights of 0.44 to 0.74 and 1.33 to 1.83 kg. Fish were naturally infested with sea lice at the start of each trial. At Day -1, samples of 10 or 15 fish were taken from each pen to determine pre-treatment numbers of lice. Emamectin benzoate was administered in feed, to 4 replicate pens, at a dose of 50 micrograms kg-1 biomass d-1 for 7 consecutive days (Days 0 to 6). Sea lice were counted again, between Days 7 and 77, and comparisons made with untreated control fish. Despite adverse weather conditions, wide variations in fish weights and exposure to new infestations, treatment was effective against chalimus and motile stages of L. salmonis. In the autumn trial, efficacy at Day 27 was 89%, and lice numbers remained lower on treated fish than on control fish 64 d from the start of treatment. In the winter trial, reductions in lice numbers at low temperatures were slower but good efficacy was achieved by Day 35. Although control fish had to be treated with hydrogen peroxide at Day 21, fish treated only with emamectin benzoate on Days 0 to 6 still had 89% fewer lice than control fish at Day 35. There were very few C. elongatus present, but at the end of both trials numbers were lower on treated fish. No adverse effects were associated with treatment of fish with emamectin benzoate.  相似文献

Many planktivorous fishes forage in currents, where they actively maintain position and visually strike at current-entrained zooplankton. In general, the zooplankton are wafted by the foraging fish at a rate equivalent to the current velocity. From a fish's viewpoint the plankton approach either head-on or offset at varied distances from the fish's position. We present a model that describes the relative motion of particles as they approach and pass a foraging fish at different offset distances, and the rate of change in apparent size as they close on a fish. In addition, a series of experiments of fish feeding on plankton in a flume at increasing current velocities revealed that two basic tactics are utilized. At low current velocities (<10-14 cm s m 1), the fish swims toward the prey, whereas at higher current velocities the fish tends to fall back with the current to capture a prey item. The model and experimental results are discussed in terms of the visual problems associated with the detection and tracking of items in motion.  相似文献

The age of sex reversal of the venus tusk fish Choerodon venustus , caught by line fishing at various locations on the southern Great Barrier Reef, indicated that C. venustus is capable of modifying its life cycle in response to increased mortality. The evidence suggests Masthead Reef fish, which experience the highest mortality, underwent sex reversal at a smaller size and younger age than at the other sites. The largest female fish, sexually transitional fish and males were smaller at Masthead Reef than at the Swains Reefs or One Tree Reef at Masthead Reef. There was also considerable overlap in the size of males and females within the exploited populations indicating that sex reversal is not initiated at a particular length but may have a social cause. The sex ratio of fish was essentially the same for fish fully susceptible to line fishing in the Swains and Masthead samples. Circumstantial evidence suggested that the absence of large males in a population may initiate sex reversal, indicating the maintenance of a constant sex ratio may have a social basis.  相似文献

The swimming and shoaling behaviour of Phoxinus phoxinus was investigated in four identical channels connected to the River Frome, U.K. Minnows (mean length 29.5 mm) were stocked at an initial density of 100 fish per channel (22.2 fish m−2). The position of all visible fish in the channels was recorded at basal and elevated discharges, and use of velocity habitats inferred. Although a range of velocities (including zero) was present at both discharges, the fish selected higher mean velocities at elevated discharges than at basal discharges. Habitat suitability was significantly different between periods, emphasizing the effect of habitat availability and past experience upon habitat use. This appeared to result from the fish holding position at points with variable flow conditions, rather than moving to points with more suitable conditions. Shoal size tended to be reduced during and after elevated discharge, although variability between replicates was high. Small groups of fish tended to break off during the high flow events.  相似文献
