Larvæ of Tenebrio while creeping show homostrophic responses, and stereotropic orientation to lateral contacts. Homostrophic orientation is inhibited by stereotropism. Both depend upon the anterior portion of the central nervous system. Stereotropic orientation due to unilateral contact, particularly at the anterior end, persists briefly after the cessation of the contact. Equal posterior bilateral contact of the body obliterates stereotropic bending. Unequal posterior bilateral contacts lead to orientation through an angle roughly proportional to the differences in contact areas. Functional symmetry in such responses is not disturbed by asymmetrical distribution of the body "hairs." The stereotropic orientation undergoes reversal of direction, central in origin, when the stimulation is sufficiently intense. Stereotropic response, leading to maintained lateral contact with a surface or to bending when the end of such a surface has been passed, is inhibited by a definite intensity of light. These findings (1) round out the demonstration that stereotropism is truly of a tropistic character, and (2) make possible the understanding of conduct in a case involving the participation of contact stimulation, phototropism, temperature, and homostrophy.  相似文献

A test of the holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske) from the upper Meerssen Member (subunit IVf-6; Maastricht Formation) in the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage (Late Cretaceous) was infested by 170 non-penetrative pits assigned to Oichnus excavatus (Donovan and Jagt). The echinoid is assumed to have been alive at that time. The distribution of pits is approximately bilaterally symmetrical and mainly supraambital; pits on the oral surface may have been carried subambitally by echinoid plate growth. Many pits are comparatively shallow; they probably were partly filled by the echinoid after death of the pit-forming organisms. The area around the periproct is devoid of pits as is the anterior ambulacrum (amb III). The latter was probably kept free of larval pit-formers by the tube feet; other ambulacra, with tube feet adapted for respiration, lacked such defense.  相似文献

The irregular echinoids Plesiechinus ornatus (Buckman) (Pygasteroida) and Galeropygus agariciformis (Forbes) (Cassiduloida) occur together in beds of the murchisonoe Zone, Bajocian, outcropping in the Cheltenham region of Gloucestershire. These species were largely restricted to different lithofacies within the carbonate shelf environment. Both adopted a hidden mode of life but achieved this by different techniques. Plesiechinus had fairly short spines and strongly muscular podia over the whole corona and was able to cover itself with coarse substrate particles. The oral tubercles are bilaterally symmetrical and are radially arranged. The oral spines are thought to have pulled sediment out from beneath the test, excavating a small depression for it. Galeropygus bore a dense covering of very small spines and its tube feet were differentiated into aboral respiratory podia and oral suckered podia. It had a preferred anterior direction of locomotion and is thought to have buried itself completely by excavating and ploughing into the substrate as it moved forward. Plesiechinus fed using only its lantern and postulated peristomial tube feet, whereas Galeropygus was a continugus sediment swallower and used its phyllode tube feet and peristomal lip spines in transferring particles towards the mouth.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions Limulus from 20 to 60 mm. in diameter are positively phototropic, and execute circus movements towards the normal side, when the median and the opposite lateral eyes are removed or covered. 2. The phototropism of Limulus may be modified or obliterated by (a) fright, (b) hunger, (c) stereotropism, (d) photokinesis, and (e) unknown stimuli. 3. Quantitative measurements of the paths of animals doing circus movements demonstrate that the amount of turning varies directly with the light intensity as follows: for 8,000 candle meters the degrees turned per centimeter were 6.73; for 2,000 candle meters, 5.23; and for 900 candle meters, 4.78. In other words, the diameter of the circle varies inversely with the light intensity. 4. The rate of locomotion per minute also varies directly with the light intensity, being 178 cm. for 8,000 candle meters, 167 for 2,000, and 157 for 900. 5. These reactions are satisfactorily explained by the tropism theory.  相似文献

Protocols for anoxia/starvation in the genetic model organism C. elegans simulate ischemia/reperfusion. Worms are separated from bacterial food and placed under anoxia for 20 hr (simulated ischemia), and subsequently moved to a normal atmosphere with food (simulated reperfusion). This experimental paradigm results in increased death and neuronal damage, and techniques are presented to assess organism viability, alterations to the morphology of touch neuron processes, as well as touch sensitivity, which represents the behavioral output of neuronal function. Finally, a method for constructing hypoxic incubators using common kitchen storage containers is described. The addition of a mass flow control unit allows for alterations to be made to the gas mixture in the custom incubators, and a circulating water bath allows for both temperature control and makes it easy to identify leaks. This method provides a low cost alternative to commercially available units.  相似文献

Summary As in many spiralian embryos with unequal cleavage, cleavage inPlatynereis follows an invariant pattern. Preceding each cleavage the cytoplasm is reorganized, allowing the spiral cleavage mode to produce cells with different cytoplasmic composition. The fertilized egg undergoes a dramatic ooplasmic segregation after the completion of the cortical reaction. As a consequence, a plug of clear cytoplasm becomes located at the animal pole. Once the four quadrants of the embryo have been established, the cleavage sequence of the D quadrant differs clearly from that of the other three quadrants. The results presented here suggest that differential distribution of the clear cytoplasm governs this sequence. The first quartet of micromeres, which will form the ectoderm and the cerebral ganglia of the head, is clearly bilaterally symmetrical from the onset of the third cleavage. Dorsoventral polarity and bilateral symmetry in the ectoderm of the trunk is expressed most markedly by the dorsal location of the large 2d cell, whose rapid proliferation is bilaterally symmetrical with respect to the median plane. As a result of this proliferation it comes to fill most of the posttrochal region (ectoderm, three pairs of anlagen for the setal sacs, and the ventral plate which forms the nerve cord). The other micromeres contribute only a minor portion of the ventral ectoderm and are involved in the formation of the stomodaeum. The mesentoblast, 4d, i.e. the stem cell of the primary mesoderm, forms at the sixth cleavage, also in a position on the dorsal mid-line. The daughter cells, which arise from 4d by strictly bilaterally symmetrical cleavage, form the mesodermal germ bands, which lie beneath the ectoderm. The trochoblasts are formed by asynchronously cleaving founder cells, but further cleavages in these cells are synchronous. This suggests that cell-cell interaction is involved in the development of this alleged mosaic embryo.  相似文献

Tilt aftereffects were generated by bilaterally symmetrical dot patterns. Both expansion and contraction effects, similar in size and magnitude to effects usually reported with luminance contours, were observed after adaptation to symmetrical patterns tilted 15 deg or 75 deg respectively from a vertically oriented test. Large effects were found when both adapting and test stimuli were symmetrical patterns while smaller effects were found when the adapting stimulus was symmetrical and test stimulus was a grating. A third experiment, which manipulated the number of dots near the axis line, confirmed the above findings; expansion and contraction effects were observed again. The results of these experiments suggest that the neural mechanism underlying the perception of luminance contours may be linked to the mechanism for the detection of symmetry.  相似文献

A definite intensity of white light is required (about 136 m.c.) to produce negative phototropic orientation of creeping Tenebrio larvæ away from contact with a vertical glass surface. This gives a measure of stereotropism in terms of phototropism, or reciprocally. The effectiveness of light for the suppression of stereotropism varies with wave length. It is therefore simple to obtain a measure of the relation between wave length and stimulating efficiency in this case of phototropic orientation. By determinations of the minimal energy required to inhibit stereotropism with different regions of the spectrum, it is found that the maximum effectiveness is sharply localized in the neighborhood of 535µµ. The curve connecting stimulating efficiency with wave length, while giving a picture of the effective absorption by the photosensory receptors, probably does not permit accurate characterization of the essential photosensitive material.  相似文献

Five specimens ofSphenothallus have been observed in Early Devonian slates from West Germany which have been studied bv radiographs. This genus has been assumed by several authors to be a “worm tube” or that it may belong to the Conulata. Some individuals show soft parts extending from the aperture. All preserve a bilaterally symmetrical tentacular apparatus.Sphenothallus could be related to the Annelida, but cannot be placed in that phylum since no evidence of segmentation is preserved. In specimens from other localities,Sphenothallus has been observed to have a chitinophosphatic tube, unlike the calcareous tube of living tube-dwelling annelids. What can be observed of the apertural soft parts indicates a mode of life similar to that of members of the modern-day annelid order Sabellida.  相似文献

Before the eyelids have opened young rats are negatively heliotropic. They behave very much as does the larva of the blow-fly. The angle of orientation by lights opposed at 180° may be calculated by an equation based upon the elementary requirement of phototropism, namely that orientation is attained when the illumination of bilaterally disposed photoreceptors is equal. The precision of orientation decreases very nearly in proportion to the sum of the logarithms of the acting light intensities, due to photokinetic head movements. When the eyelids are opened, the rats move toward a darkened place in the field of vision, usually toward the shaded region immediately to one side of the lamp house. Therefore, when heliotropic, the rat is not "seeking the dark". The phototropism of these animals may be brought into conflict with their pronounced stereotropism, and the resolution of such conflicts may perhaps be utilized for the investigation of central nervous states.  相似文献

Convergence is a significant evolutionary phenomenon. Arrival at similar morphologies from different starting points indicates a strong role for natural selection in shaping morphological phenotypes. There is no evidence yet of convergence in the developmental mechanisms that underlie the evolution of convergent developmental phenotypes. Here we report the expression domains in sea urchins of two important developmental regulatory genes ( Orthodenticle and Runt), and show evidence of molecular convergence in the evolution of direct-developing sea urchins. Indirect development is ancestral in sea urchins. Evolutionary loss of the feeding pluteus stage and precocious formation of the radially symmetric juvenile has evolved independently in numerous sea urchin lineages, thus direct development is an evolutionary convergence. Indirect-developing species do not express Otx during the formation of their five primordial tube feet, the ancestral condition. However, each direct-developing urchin examined does express Otx in the tube feet. Otx expression in the radial arms of direct-developing sea urchins is thus convergent, and may indicate a specific need for Otx use in direct development, a constraint that would make direct development less able to evolve than if there were multiple molecular means for it to evolve. In contrast, Runt is expressed in tube feet in both direct- and indirect-developing species. Because echinoderms are closely related to chordates and postdate the protostome/deuterostome divergence, they must have evolved from bilaterally symmetrical ancestors. Arthropods and chordates use Otx in patterning their anterior axis, and Runt has multiple roles including embryonic patterning in arthropods, and blood and bone cell differentiation in vertebrates. Runt has apparently been co-opted in echinoderms for patterning of pentamery, and Otx in pentameral patterning among direct-developing echinoids. The surprisingly dynamic nature of Otx evolution reinvigorates debate on the role of natural selection vs shared ancestry in the evolution of novel features.  相似文献

Phototropic and gravitropic curvature by hypocotyls of Arabidopsis thaliana is minimal when the side of the hook with the cotyledons attached is positioned toward the direction of tropistic curvature, and maximal when that side of the hook is positioned away from the direction of tropistic curvature. Based on these data, it is proposed that the position of the hook with attached cotyledons affects curvature and not stimulus perception. A randomly oriented population of plants exhibited considerable heterogeneity in tropistic curvature. This heterogeneity arises at least in part from the dependence of curvature on the position of the hook.  相似文献

1. Stimulation causes Antedon to swim by means of alternate oral bending and dorsal stroke of the arms. Two arms of a given ray move alternately so that while one is executing the aboral stroke its mate is flexing ventrally. This implies reciprocal inhibition. 2. Recriprocal inhibition between the two arms of an isolated ray can be abolished by the use of either strychnine or nicotine. 3. Coordination between the rays is referable to the conducting properties of the nervous pentagon which connects the five rays. In this system an impulse loses in effectiveness as it passes from the point of origin. 4. When Antedon is made to rest oral face down on the floor of an aquarium, oral flexion of all the rays, swimming movements, and righting result. Antedon is therefore negatively stereotropic with reference to its ventral side. 5. Excitation of the dorsal cirri results in aboral bending of all the rays. Stimulation of the cirri inhibits ventral flexion to the extent of preventing righting movements while on the other hand stimulation of the ventral surface inhibits the grasp reflex of the cirri. Thus oral and aboral sides of Antedon exhibit dynamic symmetry although structurally dissimilar.  相似文献

The relations between lysin concentration, percentage hemolysis at the moment at which the lysin concentration is reduced by dilution, and the amount of hemolysis which follows the dilution as a result of the reaction being "progressive" point to there being an "internal" phase at the red cell surfaces, in which the lysin is less affected by the dilution than in the system as a whole. A second possibility, i.e. that the combination of lysin molecules with certain components of the cell surface has an ultimate effect on neighboring components which depend on the former for their stability cannot, however, be ruled out. In systems containing digitonin or sodium taurocholate, this internal phase, once formed, seems to be almost unaffected by the dilution of the system; i.e., these lysins are very firmly held at the cell surfaces. NGIWYamide, a neuropeptide recently isolated from sea cucumbers, was tested on tube feet of the starfish Asterina pectinifera. NGIWYamide (10(-6)-10(-4) M) caused contraction of isolated tube feet. NGIWYamide-like immunoreactivity (NGIWYa-LI) was investigated with an antiserum against NGIWYamide. NGIWYa-LI was found in the radial nerve cord (RNC), the marginal nerve, and the tube feet. Both ectoneural and hyponeural parts of the RNC showed NGIWYa-LI. Immunoreactive cell bodies were found in both parts of RNC. Extensive labeling in the basal region of the ectoneural part suggests that a substantial proportion of axons in this part contains NGIWYamide or a similar substance. In tube feet, NGIWYa-LI was found in the sub-epithelial nerve plexus and in the basal nerve ring. Double labeling along with 1E11, a neuron-specific monoclonal antibody developed from A. pectinifera, indicated that the structures with NGIWYa-LI are neurons. These results suggest that NGIWYamide or an NGIWYamide-like peptide exists in starfish and functions as a neurotransmitter or a neuromodulator.  相似文献

The disease causing mass mortalities of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis off Nova Scotia, Canada, from 1980 to 1983 is described. Diseased urchins were characterized by loss of preipheral muscle function in tube feet, spines, and mouth. Signs occurred primarily in the body wall and associated tissues (water vascular system, nerves, spine bases) and coelomic fluid. These symptoms were diffuse and included a general infiltration of tissues with amoebocytes. The coelomic fluid often contained reduced numbers of red and white spherule cells, and clotting was incomplete. Progressive breakdown and fragmentation of muscle cells in tube feet and spine bases resulted in destruction of coherent muscle layers and their replacement by numerous spindle-shaped fibrillar muscle remnants. Coelomic lining cells in the tube feet sloughed off into the lumen, but remained in clumps and phagocytosed muscle remnants.  相似文献
