A sensitive radioimmunoassay for gonadotropin releasing hormone has been developed. The assay has been validated for its specificity by testing various analogues of gonadotropin releasing hormone. Analysis of plasma samples during the menstrual cycle of 4 female bonnet monkeys showed a significant increase in the immunoreactive gonadotropin releasing hormone levels during preovulatory period of the menstrual cycle.  相似文献

The concentrations of LH, FSH, prolactin, oestradiol and progesterone in serum were measured daily during the menstrual cycle of 100 normal Chinese women. The cyclic changes in LH, FSH, oestradiol and progesterone were typical of ovulatory cycles in women of other ethnic groups as reported in the literature. The geometric mean of the LH midcycle peak value was 51 X 64 i.u./l, the FSH mid-cycle peak value was 11 X 52 i.u./l, the preovulatory oestradiol peak was 1229 X 12 pmol/l, and the progesterone luteal maximum was 53 X 27 nmol/l. The cyclic changes of prolactin concentrations were irregular: the value at mid-cycle was significantly higher than that at the follicular or luteal phases. A correlation between the length of the cycle and mean concentrations of LH and oestradiol at different stages throughout the cycle was shown.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is small random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry that are thought to accumulate during development. FA is therefore a measure of one component of fitness, that is, developmental stability. This work is not concerned with permanent between-individual differences in asymmetries but rather with temporary within-individual changes in asymmetry that are related to the menstrual cycle (cyclical asymmetry, CA). We present evidence from studies of non-sexually selected traits (ear and digit size) and a sexually selected trait (breast size) that, in characters made up wholly or in part of soft tissue, CA varies across the menstrual cycle in women. It is highest at the beginning and end of the cycle, when women are generally infertile, and low in mid-cycle, when fertility is highest. Furthermore in mid-cycle there is an indication of a transitory (24-hour) increase in CA followed by a substantial decrease, which may indicate ovulation. Temporal changes in CA could therefore be used by males to indicate a female's position in the cycle. We discuss these findings in relation to (1) our understanding of the evolution of human mating systems, (2) the practical implications of these data in the treatment of infertility and to facilitate contraception, and (3) their relevance to exercise and dieting as a means to minimize across-cycle increases in asymmetry.  相似文献

The plasma concentrations of carnitine were determined in a group of 35 women and 35 men admitted to a clinic, and in another group of 18 women during their menstrual cycle. The values found for the women (45.1 +/- 2.6 nmol/ml of free carnitine and 59.1 +/- 2.8 nmol/ml of total carnitine) were not significantly different from the values obtained in men (respectively 42.4 +/- 1.7 and 55.5 +/- 1.9 nmol/ml). No direct relationship between the free or total carnitine concentrations and the concentrations of circulating lipids could be demonstrated. During the menstrual cycle the plasma concentrations of free and total carnitine remained unchanged. Intake of oral contraceptives caused an elevation in blood triacylglycerols and decreases in the levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and free and total carnitine.  相似文献

To study the influence of the menstrual cycle on whole body thermal balance and on thermoregulatory mechanisms, metabolic heat production (M) was measured by indirect calorimetry and total heat losses (H) were measured by direct calorimetry in nine women during the follicular (F) and the luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. The subjects were studied while exposed for 90 min to neutral environmental conditions (ambient temperature 28 degrees C, relative humidity 40%) in a direct calorimeter. The values of M and H were not modified by the phase of the menstrual cycle. Furthermore, in both phases the subjects were in thermal equilibrium because M was similar to H (69.7 +/- 1.8 and 72.1 +/- 1.8 W in F and 70.4 +/- 1.9 and 71.4 +/- 1.7 W in L phases, respectively). Tympanic temperature (Tty) was 0.24 +/- 0.07 degrees C higher in the L than in the F phase (P less than 0.05), whereas mean skin temperature (Tsk) was unchanged. Calculated skin thermal conductance (Ksk) was lower in the L (17.9 +/- 0.6 W.m-2.degrees C-1) than in the F phase (20.1 +/- 1.1 W.m-2.degrees C-1; P less than 0.05). Calculated skin blood flow (Fsk) was also lower in the L (0.101 +/- 0.008 l.min-1.m-2) than in the F phase (0.131 +/- 0.015 l.min-1.m-2; P less than 0.05). Differences in Tty, Ksk, and Fsk were not correlated with changes in plasma progesterone concentration. It is concluded that, during the L phase, a decreased thermal conductance in women exposed to a neutral environment allows the maintenance of a higher internal temperature.  相似文献

This study examined the specific physiological responses of women with primary dysmenorrhea during the severely painful menstrual (days 1-2 of menstruation) and the non-painful follicular phases (days 5-8 after the onset of menstruation). Subjects consisted of 10 severe primary dysmenorrheic (Group P) and 10 non-dysmenorrheic women (Group C) with regular menstrual cycles. However, only 9 out of 10 and 8 out of 10 subjects of Groups P and C participated during the follicular phase. Physiological measures were taken in a resting state for 60 min. In the menstrual phase, the pain ratings and secretory immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) concentrations of Group P were significantly higher than those of Group C, with relatively significant decreases in the leg-skin temperature in the former as well. In addition, the systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at 45 min after rest in Group P were significantly higher than those found in Group C. These reactions strongly suggest activation of the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axis (SAM axis) by painful stress. Furthermore, the low-frequency (LF) component of the SBP variability (SBPV) was significantly higher in Group P than Group C, even during the follicular phase. These findings imply that Group P may well have elevated activities of the SAM axis throughout the whole menstrual cycle. As such, it suggests that dysmenorrheic women may be affected by certain stressors other than pain per se and pain-derived emotions throughout the whole menstrual cycle. The findings also indicate that women with dysmenorrhea have more sensitive responses to the SAM system than non-dysmenorrheic women during stress. Moreover, the high-frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability (HRV), or the index for the vagus nerve activity, displayed a consistently higher value in Group P than C. It is postulated that the human body may have responded to pain in an attempt to maintain the homeostatic state by enhancing vagus nerve activity.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of baclofen administration on growth hormone (GH) secretion during different phases of the menstrual cycle. METHODS: Twelve healthy women (33.6 +/- (SD) 2.8 years; range 23-40 years) with regular menstrual cycles were enrolled. The phases of the menstrual cycle were determined using transvaginal ultrasonography (TV-US) and detecting hormonal serum levels. Plasma GH levels were evaluated during the early follicular, periovulatory and luteal phases of the cycle before and after the baclofen challenge test. RESULTS: After acute baclofen administration, GH levels increased significantly (p < 0.001) compared to basal values during the periovulatory and luteal phases, while no significant variation was detected during the early follicular phase. In addition, plasma GH levels resulted significantly (p < 0.001) higher during the luteal phase than during the periovulatory phase. CONCLUSION: Acute baclofen administration induces a significant increase in plasma GH levels in healthy females during the periovulatory and luteal phases, but not during the early follicular phase. These data suggest a modulator role of plasma sex steroids levels on GH release induced by baclofen.  相似文献

Sexual behaviors were recorded and urinary concentrations of total estrogens and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (Pdg) measured during six normal menstrual cycles from two female lowland gorillas in a stable, captive group. Frequencies of female presentations, mounts, and copulations were positively associated with peak estrogen values but not with elevations of Pdg. These results support the observation that sexual behaviors in the gorilla occur most frequently in the periovulatory period and that copulations serve primarily a sexual function.  相似文献

Study I: Choice reaction times were measured in 12 normally menstruating women using a numerals-keys serial response task with three set sizes (two, four, and eight). Testing was carried out at four successive phases of the menstrual cycle corresponding with different states of neuroendocrine activity. They were, respectively: (i) 2nd day of flow; (ii) 4th day after cessation of flow (preovulation); (iii) 12th day after flow (postovulation); and (iv) 3rd day before next (estimated) flow. No consistent relationship between performance and phase of the cycle could be demonstrated. The only significant effect was an increase in reaction time with increasing set size. The study provides no support for the theory that variations in estrogen and progesterone levels may cause behaviorally relevant changes in central nervous system functioning. Study II: Four women suffering from premenstrual tension were examined thrice weekly on the same task for 4 consecutive weeks. Three hours prior to testing, a blood sample was drawn and assayed for estrogen, progesterone, and gonadotropin (LH). Performance on the serial choice response task bore no consistent relationship to blood levels of any of the three hormones. Performance before ovulation (as determined by peak LH level) did not differ significantly from that after ovulation. These results concur with those of Study I: there was no reliable relationship between hormonal status and performance.  相似文献

Cellular characteristics of nipple aspiration fluid during the menstrual cycle in healthy premenopausal women Fifteen healthy premenopausal female volunteers underwent weekly nipple aspiration of ductal fluid from both breasts during two menstrual cycles to investigate the variability of the cellular profile of the ductal fluid. Ductal fluid was successfully obtained using breast massage and nipple-areolar suction from 247/280 (89%) breasts. 83% of samples available for cytological analysis were cellular and 30% of cellular aspirates contained ductal epithelial cells identified using standard morphological criteria. No significant variation in cell number or cell type was identified during the menstrual cycle. All samples tested had an 'H' score of zero for oestrogen receptor. Seven out of 14 women expressed the proliferation marker Mcm-2 in the cells of at least one of the specimens, with no evidence of a menstrual cycle influence on expression. In conclusion, the cellular profile of breast ductal fluid did not vary consistently during the menstrual cycle, permitting future breast cancer screening studies incorporating serial nipple aspirations to be performed independent of the phase of the cycle.  相似文献

Fifteen Suffolk ewes were used in three experiments to compare plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) patterns during the estrous cycle and to determine whether FSH levels undergo changes in pulse frequency. Luteinizing hormone changed inversely with progesterone levels whereas FSH and progesterone concentrations revealed no obvious relationship. Unlike LH, FSH levels did not pulsate during the follicular phase. Higher FSH levels were detected on days 1, 6 and 12 and lower levels on days 0, 4 and 16. Coincident preovulatory LH and FSH surges were observed and this was the only time FSH and LH levels appeared to be jointly controlled.  相似文献

The endogenous opioid peptides (EOPs) may inhibit the rate of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) release and hence the frequency of pulsatile luteinizing hormone (LH) release, particularly in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Our objectives were to compare the effects of an opiate antagonist, naloxone (NAL), on the patterns of LH, estradiol-17 beta (E2), and progesterone (P4) secretion during the follicular and luteal phases of the macaque menstrual cycle. Plasma levels of E2, P4, and bioactive LH were measured in serial, 15-min blood samples during 8-hr infusions of NAL (2 mg/hr) or saline, either on Days 5 or 6 of the follicular phase (FN and FS, n = 5 and 4, respectively) or on Days 8, 9, or 10 of the luteal phase (LN and LS, n = 5 each) of a menstrual cycle. The pulsatile parameters of each hormone were determined by PULSAR analysis and the correspondence of steroid pulses with those of LH were analyzed for each cycle stage in each animal. As expected, LH mean levels and pulse frequencies in LS monkeys were only about one-third of those values in FS animals. NAL had no effects on pulsatile LH, E2, or P4 release during the follicular phase. In contrast, luteal phase NAL infusions increased both LH mean levels and pulse frequencies to values which were indistinguishable from those in FS animals. LH pulse amplitudes did not differ among the four groups. Mean levels and pulse frequencies of P4 secretion in LS monkeys were about 4- and 14-fold greater than those values in FS animals. Mean levels and pulse amplitudes of P4 release in LN animals were greater than those values in all other groups. LH and E2 pulses were not closely correlated in follicular phase animals, and this pulse association was not altered by NAL. In FS monkeys, LH and P4 pulses were not correlated; however, NAL increased this LH-p4 pulse correspondence. LH and P4 pulses were closely correlated in luteal phase animals and this association was not affected by NAL. Our data suggest that the EOPs inhibit the frequency of pulsatile LH secretion in the presence of luteal phase levels of P4. During the midfollicular phase when LH pulses occur every 60 to 90 min, the opioid antagonist NAL alters neither the pulsatile pattern of LH release nor E2 secretion, but NAL may directly affect P4-secreting cells.  相似文献

Background

There is increasing evidence for hormone-dependent modification of function and behavior during the menstrual cycle, but little is known about associated short-term structural alterations of the brain. Preliminary studies suggest that a hormone-dependent decline in brain volume occurs in postmenopausal, or women receiving antiestrogens, long term. Advances in serial MR-volumetry have allowed for the accurate detection of small volume changes of the brain. Recently, activity-induced short-term structural plasticity of the brain was demonstrated, challenging the view that the brain is as rigid as formerly believed.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used MR-volumetry to investigate short-term brain volume changes across the menstrual cycle in women or a parallel 4 week period in men, respectively. We found a significant grey matter volume peak and CSF loss at the time of ovulation in females. This volume peak did not correlate with estradiol or progesterone hormone levels. Men did not show any significant brain volume alterations.

Conclusions/Significance

These data give evidence of short-term hormone-dependent structural brain changes during the menstrual cycle, which need to be correlated with functional states and have to be considered in structure-associated functional brain research.  相似文献

Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in serial blood samples of female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) were measured by radioimmunoassay method. Our findings indicate the following pattern of LH levels: LH increases during early courtship which reaches a peak (5.43 ± 0.79 ng/ml) during the nesting period. LH declines following egg-laying (3.77 ± 0.33 ng/ml) and again after hatching (2.23 ± 0.28 ng/ml). It remains high in females which laid infertile eggs initially and subsequently showed a further laying. The results are compared with published data on plasma estrogens and progesterone in the dove's breeding cycle.  相似文献
