Laboratory and field-cage tests were done to determine how undersowing brassica plants (Brassica oleraceae L. and B. rapa L.) (Cruciferae) with subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) (Papilionaceae) affected host-plant selection by eight pest insect species of brassica crops. The pest species tested were Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) (the small white butterfly), Pieris brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) (the large white butterfly), Delia radicum (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) (the cabbage root fly), Phaedon cochleariae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) (the mustard beetle), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) (the diamond-back moth), Evergestis forficalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (the garden-pebble moth), Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (the cabbage moth) and Brevicoryne brassicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (the cabbage aphid). In all tests, except two in which the brassica plants were about three times as high as the clover background, 39%–100% fewer of the pest insect stage monitored were found on host plants presented in clover than on those presented in bare soil. Contrary to claims supporting the ‘enemies hypothesis’, differences in colonization alone appeared sufficient to account for the lower numbers of insects found when host plants are undersown with clover. To be effective in reducing plant colonization, the clover must cover 50%, and preferably more, of the vertical profile of the crop plants. As clover used as an undersown crop often has to be cut to make it less competitive with the main brassica crop, temporal aspects of the condition of the clover during critical periods of pest activity need to be recorded carefully before concluding that undersowing does not produce the effect desired against certain pest species under field conditions. The effective clover barrier is like any other treatment, if it is not present at the appropriate time it cannot be expected to reduce pest insect numbers.  相似文献

Plant responses to dual herbivore attack are increasingly studied, but effects on the metabolome have largely been restricted to volatile metabolites and defence‐related non‐volatile metabolites. However, plants subjected to stress, such as herbivory, undergo major changes in both primary and secondary metabolism. Using a naturally occurring system, we investigated metabolome‐wide effects of single or dual herbivory on Brassica nigra plants by Brevicoryne brassicae aphids and Pieris brassicae caterpillars, while also considering the effect of aphid density. Metabolomic analysis of leaf material showed that single and dual herbivory had strong effects on the plant metabolome, with caterpillar feeding having the strongest influence. Additionally, aphid‐density‐dependent effects were found in both the single and dual infestation scenarios. Multivariate analysis revealed treatment‐specific metabolomic profiles, and effects were largely driven by alterations in the glucosinolate and sugar pools. Our work shows that analysing the plant metabolome as a single entity rather than as individual metabolites provides new insights into the subcellular processes underlying plant defence against multiple herbivore attackers. These processes appear to be importantly influenced by insect density.  相似文献

Plants defend themselves against herbivores not only by a single trait but also by diversified multiple defense strategies. It remains unclear how these multiple defense mechanisms are effectively organized against herbivores. In this study, we focused on Brassicaceae plants, which have one of the most diversified secondary metabolites, glucosinolates (GSLs), as a defense against herbivores. By analyzing various defense traits including GSL profiles among 12 species (11 genera) of Brassicaceae plants, it is revealed that their defense strategies can be divided into three categories as multiple defenses. The GSL profiles differed between these three categories: (i) high nutritional level with long‐chain aliphatic GSLs; (ii) low nutritional level and high physical defenses with short‐chain aliphatic GSLs; and (iii) high nutritional level and low defense. The feeding experiment was conducted using two types of herbivores, Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) as a specialist herbivore and the Eri silkmoth Samia cynthia ricini (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) as a generalist, to assess the ability of each plant in multiple defense strategy. It was observed that the Eri silkmoth's performance differed according to which defense strategy it was exposed to. However, the growth rate of P. rapae did not vary among the three categories of defense strategy. These results suggest that the diversified defense strategies of Brassicaceae species have evolved to cope with diversified herbivores.  相似文献

* Plant defense traits often show high levels of genetic variation, despite clear impacts on plant fitness. This variation may be partly maintained by trade-offs in the defense against multiple herbivore species, for example between generalists and coevolved specialists. Despite a long-standing discussion in the literature on the subject, no study to date has specifically manipulated specialist and generalist herbivores independently of one another to determine whether the two guilds exert opposing selection pressures on specific defensive traits. * In two separate experiments, the dominant specialist and generalist herbivores of Brassica nigra were independently manipulated to test whether the composition of the herbivore community altered the direction of selection on a major defensive trait of the plant, sinigrin concentration. * It was found that generalist damage was negatively correlated but specialist loads were positively correlated with increasing sinigrin concentrations; and sinigrin concentration was favored when specialists were removed, disfavored (past an intermediate point) when generalists were removed and selectively neutral when plants faced both generalists and specialists.  相似文献

A comparison was made of the dosage-mortality responses of larvae of Pieris brassicae and P. rapae to infection by P. brassicae granulosis virus (GV). Bioassays with first, second, third, and fourth-instar larvae of both species revealed a marked difference in susceptibility between instars and between species. Median lethal dosages (LD50s) for P. rapae larvae ranged from five capsules for the first instar to 662 capsules for the fourth instar. With P. brassicae, this range extended from 66 capsules to 2.3 × 107 capsules. The time-mortality responses of the two species were similar when fed virus dosages equivalent to an LD90. Median lethal times (LT50s) ranged from 5 days for first-instar larvae to 7–8 days for fourth-instar larvae. A comparison between a long-established laboratory stock of P. brassicae and a stock recently acquired from the field showed no significant difference in their susceptibility to GV. The implications of the pronounced species differences in susceptibility to GV infection are discussed in relation to the potential field control of P. rapae and P. brassicae.  相似文献

Twenty eight Brassica napus lines were developed which had contrasting leaf glucosinolate profiles to those found in commercial oilseed rape cultivars. The lines varied both in the total amount of aliphatic glucosinolates and in the ratio of different side chain structures. The lines were used in field experiments to assess the manner by which glucosinolates mediate the interactions between Brasssica and specialist pests (Psylliodes chrysocephala and Pieris rapae) and generalist pests (pigeons and slugs). Increases in the level of glucosinolates resulted in greater damage by adult flea beetles (P. chrysocephala) and a greater incidence of Pieris rapae larvae, but reduced the extent of grazing by pigeons and slugs. Decreasing the side chain length of aliphatic glucosinolates and reducing the extent of hydroxylation of butenyl glucosinolates increased the extent of adult flea beetle feeding. The implications of modifying the glucosinolate content of the leaves of oilseed rape and the role of these secondary metabolites in plant/herbivore interactions are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Several studies have shown that above‐ and belowground insects can interact by influencing each others growth, development, and survival when they feed on the same host‐plant. In natural systems, however, insects can make choices on which plants to oviposit and feed. A field experiment was carried out to determine if root‐feeding insects can influence feeding and oviposition preferences and decisions of naturally colonising foliar‐feeding insects. 2. Using the wild cruciferous plant Brassica nigra and larvae of the cabbage root fly Delia radicum as the belowground root‐feeding insect, naturally colonising populations of foliar‐feeding insects were monitored over the course of a summer season. 3. Groups of root‐infested and root‐uninfested B. nigra plants were placed in a meadow during June, July, and August of 2006 for periods of 3 days. The root‐infested and the root‐uninfested plants were either dispersed evenly or placed in clusters. Once daily, all leaves of each plant were carefully inspected and insects were removed and collected for identification. 4. The flea beetles Phyllotreta spp. and the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae were significantly more abundant on root‐uninfested (control) than on root‐infested plants. However, for B. brassicae this was only apparent when the plants were placed in clusters. Host‐plant selection by the generalist aphid M. persicae and oviposition preference by the specialist butterfly P. rapae, however, were not significantly influenced by root herbivory. 5. The results of this study show that the presence of root‐feeding insects can affect feeding and oviposition preferences of foliar‐feeding insects, even under natural conditions where many other interactions occur simultaneously. The results suggest that root‐feeding insects play a role in the structuring of aboveground communities of insects, but these effects depend on the insect species as well as on the spatial distribution of the root‐feeding insects.  相似文献

Activity of PPi-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFP) was monitored in Brassica nigra seedlings grown under nutrient-sufficient or phosphate (Pi)-starved conditions. Roots, stems and leaves of 50 d Pi-deficient seedlings displayed 4.0-, 3.7- and 2.3-fold greater PFP activity, respectively, than did nutrient sufficient controls. This induction was based primarily upon an increased susceptibility of PFP from the Pi-starved tissues to activation by fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. The ratio of PFP to ATP-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFK) was approximately 2:1 and 1:1 in the various organs of 50 d Pi-starved and Pi-fed plants, respectively. Immunoblots probed with anti-(potato PFP) immune serum revealed that the induction of PFP in Pi-starved B. nigra was coincident with an elevation in the amount of PFP α-subunit in the leaves as well as an increase in the α:β subunit ratio in the stems and roots. Induction of PFP in the various tissues was also accompanied by an appreciable decline in intracellular Pi level, decreased soluble protein content, and elevated phosphoenolpyruvate phosphatase activity. Time course studies revealed that these responses to Pi stress were significantly delayed in the leaves as compared to the roots and stems suggesting that Pi may be preferentially sequestered to the leaves during Pi starvation. These data also provide further evidence that B. nigra PFP is an adaptive enzyme that may function during Pi deprivation as: (1) a glycolytic bypass to PFK; and (2) a ‘Pi-recycling system’ that converts esterified-P to Pi that would be rapidly reassimilated into the metabolism of the Pi-deficient cells.  相似文献

  • 1 Sustainable and conventional farming systems use fertilizers that differ in the availability of nitrogen, which may affect plant quality to alter the abundance and performance of potential pest species.
  • 2 We grew brassica plants in several types of fertilizer, including those commonly used in conventional and sustainable farming systems, and an unfertilized control. The effects of fertilizer type on the performance of two aphid species and foliar glucosinolate content were investigated.
  • 3 Both aphid species performed poorly (with reduced fecundity) on the unfertilized treatment compared with those feeding on fertilized host plants.
  • 4 Brevicoryne brassicae, the brassica specialist, performed best on Brassica oleracea plants fertilized with an organic animal manure, with a 72% increase in fecundity and an 18% increase in intrinsic rate of increase compared with plants fertilized with ammonium nitrate.
  • 5 By contrast, the generalist Myzus persicae had an intrinsic rate of increase that was reduced by 15% on plants growing in the animal manure compared with those growing in ammonium nitrate.
  • 6 These results may explain earlier findings on the effects of fertilizer type on aphid populations in the field, and are discussed in the context of pest species' responses to sustainable and conventional agricultural systems.

Plants are sessile organisms and, consequently, are exposed to a plethora of stresses in their local habitat. As a result, different populations of a species are subject to different selection pressures leading to adaptation to local conditions and intraspecific divergence. The annual brassicaceous plant Arabidopsis thaliana is an attractive model for ecologists and evolutionary biologists due to the availability of a large collection of resequenced natural accessions. Accessions of A. thaliana display one of two different life cycle strategies: summer and winter annuals. We exposed a collection of 308 European Arabidopsis accessions, that have been genotyped for 250K SNPs, to a range of stresses: one abiotic stress (drought), four biotic stresses (Pieris rapae caterpillars, Plutella xylostella caterpillars, Frankliniella occidentalis thrips and Myzus persicae aphids) and two combined stresses (drought plus P. rapae and Botrytis cinerea fungus plus P. rapae). We identified heritable genetic variation for responses to the different stresses, estimated by narrow‐sense heritability. We found that accessions displaying different life cycle strategies differ in their response to stresses. Winter annuals are more resistant to drought, aphids and thrips and summer annuals are more resistant to P. rapae and P. xylostella caterpillars. Summer annuals are also more resistant to the combined stresses of drought plus P. rapae and infection by the fungus Botryris cinerea plus herbivory by P. rapae. Adaptation to drought displayed a longitudinal gradient. Finally, trade‐offs were recorded between the response to drought and responses to herbivory by caterpillars of the specialist herbivore P. rapae.  相似文献

1. The study reported here examined growth and developmental interactions between the gregarious larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and two of its hosts that vary considerably in growth potential: Pieris rapae and the larger P. brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). At pupation, healthy larvae of P. brassicae are over twice as large, in terms of fresh body mass, as those of P. rapae. 2. Clutch size of C. glomerata was manipulated artificially, and the relationship between parasitoid burden and the maximum weight of the parasitised host (= host–parasitoid complex) was measured. In both hosts, the maximum complex weight was correlated positively with parasitoid burden. Compared with unparasitised hosts, however, the growth of P. rapae was increased at significantly lower parasitoid burdens than in P. brassicae. Emerging wasp size was correlated negatively with parasitoid burden in both host species, whereas development time was less affected. 3. After larval parasitoid egress, the weight of the host carcass increased slightly, but not significantly, with parasitoid burden, although there was a strong correlation between the proportion of host mass consumed by C. glomerata larvae during development and parasitoid burden. 4. Clutch size was generally correlated positively with instar parasitised in both hosts, and greater in P. brassicae than in P. rapae. Sex ratios were much more female biased in L1 and L2 P. rapae than in all other host classes. Adult parasitoid size was correlated inversely with host instar at parasitism, and wasps emerging from P. brassicae were larger, and completed development faster, than conspecifics emerging from P. rapae. 5. The data reveal that parasitism by C. glomerata has profound species‐specific effects on the growth of both host species. Consequently, optimality models in which host quality is often based on host size at parasitism or unparasitised growth potential may have little utility in describing the development of gregarious koinobiont endoparasitoids. The results of this investigation are discussed in relation to the potential effectiveness of gregarious koinobionts in biological control programmes.  相似文献

Fifteen Brassica species and subspecies, as well as accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana and Eruca sativa, were evaluated for their resistance to the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, in the field and laboratory at Horticulture Research International (HRI) Wellesbourne in 1992. In the laboratory, aphid performance was measured in terms of pre-reproductive period, reproductive period, population increase and insect survival. Using these parameters it was possible to identify brassicas possessing antibiosis resistance. In the field B. brassicae attack was assessed in terms of numbers of insects and it was possible to determine aphid preferences for alighting on different species. High levels of antixenosis and antibiosis resistance were discovered in accessions of Brassica fruticulosa and B. spinescens, in a Brassica juncea breeding line and in Eruca sativa. Partial resistance was found in several other Brassica species. The potential of these various sources as donors of resistance genes to be bred into cultivated brassicas is discussed.  相似文献

Most Lepidoptera feed during the adult stage on carbohydrate‐rich food sources, primarily floral nectar. However, little is known about the factors leading to the acceptance of a possible food source. It is reported that butterflies select for nectar rich in sucrose and amino acids. This suggests that the insects have developed a sensitivity to these nectar compounds. We tested females of the large cabbage white, Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) for their responses to 10 different nectar‐ or honeydew‐sugars after either tarsal or proboscis stimulation. In no‐choice experiments, food‐deprived P. brassicae showed the strongest response to sucrose, followed by fructose. Other sugars, including galactose, glucose, maltose, mannose, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose and trehalose, did not elicit a feeding response. Mixtures of essential or common non‐essential amino acids did not stimulate feeding. In a choice situation, P. brassicae preferred sucrose over fructose, whereas they accepted a sucrose and amino acid solution equally to a plain sucrose solution. The results indicate that for P. brassicae, feeding is mainly elicited by sucrose and fructose.  相似文献

The F1 hybrids produced after crosses between B. gra and B. oleracea were backcrossed two or three times to B. oleracea. Among the 14 plants analysed, five were monosomic addition lines (2n=19), six were double monosomic addition lines (2n=20) and three had three or four additional chromosomes. From these lines, 14 isozyme and 80 RAPD loci were localized on the eight chromosomes of B. nigra. The comparison between B. napus-B. nigra, from which five B. nigra chromosomes were already described, and the new set of B. oleracea-B. nigra addition lines was performed using five isozyme and 22 common RAPD loci. The homology of the common RAPD loci was confirmed by hybridization of the two sets of addition lines as well as the presence of duplicated loci on different chromosomes. For the five added chromosomes available on the two genetic backgrounds, i.e. B. napus and B. oleracea, using isozyme markers, the chromosome transmission rate was studied from backcross progeny using the recurrent parent either as male or as female and from the selfing of monosomic addition lines. For each chromosome, no difference was detected between male and female transmission except for chromosome 3. This latter presented a percentage of female transmission of around 20%, close to the ones observed for the other chromosomes, but a very low male transmission (1.3%). The analysis from restriction enzyme digests of PCR products, obtained from primers selected in highly conserved regions of self-incompatible genes, suggested that the chromosome 3 probably carried the SLG-B. nigra locus.
